[4] Mountains of Knowledge and Piety Who Constantly Strove to Humble Their Souls

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

A woman said to Imam Ash-Shabee, may Allah have mercy upon him, ”O scholar! Give me a verdict”. He said, “Indeed, a scholar is one who fears Allah, The Mighty and Majestic”. [1]

Bilal Ibn Sa’d, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “Do not be a friend of Allah in the open (i.e. the good you show in public) and an enemy of His in private”. [2]

Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “Admonish the people with your actions and not (only) with your statements”. [i.e. act upon what you call to].

Ataa Al-Azraqi said: A man said to Hasan al-Basri: “O Abu Sa’eed! How are you?” He said: “What is the state of affairs of one who reaches the morning and the evening whilst waiting for death, and he does not know what Allah will do with him?!”

He said: “If you see a man competing with you in the worldly thing, compete with him in the (affairs) of the afterlife”.
He said: “The basis of evil are three and its branches are six. The basis are: Envy, covetousness and love of the worldly life. Its branches are love of leadership, love of boasting, love of praise, love of excessive food, sleep and relaxation. [3]

Conflict Between Rome and Persia

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. The Romans have been defeated. In the nearer land (Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine), and they, after their defeat, will be victorious. Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians), with the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. (It is) a Promise of Allah (i.e. Allah will give victory to the Romans against the Persians), and Allah fails not in His Promise, but most of humankind know not. They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping, etc.), and they are heedless of the Hereafter. [Al-Rum. 1-7]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated:

In that era the Persians and Romans were among the most powerful states in the earth, and there used to be wars and fighting between them as happens between states of equal strength. The Persians were polytheists who worshipped fire, and the Romans were people of the Scripture who ascribed themselves to the Tawrat and Injeel, and they were closer to the Muslims than the Persians; therefore, the believers loved that the Romans should gain the upper hand and be victorious over the Persians, but the polytheists – due to the religion of polytheism they had in common with the Persians – loved that the Persians should be victorious over the Romans. The Persians were victorious over the Romans, but the victory did not extend over their lands, rather it was limited to the areas closest to their frontiers. The polytheists of Makkah were happy and the Muslims were sad due to that, so Allah informed and promised them that the Romans will overcome the Persians [فِى بِضۡعِ سِنِينَ‌ۗ – Within three to nine years] – Meaning, within nine or eight years, or approximately; neither exceeding ten years nor less than three years; and that the Persian victory against the Romans and the Roman victory against the Persians occurs by Allah’s Will and decree. This is why Allah stated: [لِلَّهِ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ مِن قَبۡلُ وَمِنۢ بَعۡدُ‌ۚ – The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah]- Meaning, victory does not merely occur due to the means one employs, but rather it has to attached to Allah’s Will and Decree.

[وَيَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ – And on that Day]- Meaning, the day that the Romans will overcome and defeat Persians, [يَفۡرَحُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ – the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice; بِنَصۡرِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ – with the help of Allah; يَنصُرُ مَن يَشَآءُ‌ۖ – He (Allah) helps whom He wills]- Meaning, they (i.e. the Muslims) will rejoice due to the Roman victory against the Persians, even though both parties are disbelievers, but some evils are less harmful than others, and on that day the polytheists (of Makkah) will be sad. (1)

Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The Persians were fire worshippers and the Romans were Christians. At first the Persians defeated the Christians and this occurred during the early days of the Prophet’s, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, mission while he was in Makkah and his followers were few; so the polytheists were happy due to the victory of the Persians because they were closer to them than the people of the Scripture, and because both the Quraish and the Persians were nether people of the Scripture nor did they believe in the resurrection. The Muslims were sad because the people of the Scripture were closer to them [i.e. even though they distorted their books and are commanded to follow the final Messenger]. Then Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq, may Allah be pleased with him, went to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and informed him about the victory of the Persians, so Allah revealed:

Alif-Laam-Meem. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians); with the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. [Al-Rum. 1-5]

This was what the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, informed them before its occurrence and it occurred as he stated. When Abubakr As-Siddeeq, may Allah be pleased with him, informed the Quraish about it, they belied him, so he placed a price on that as mentioned by the scholars of Tafsir and the scholars of Hadith. Sufyaan Bin Sunayd, may Allah have mercy upon him, – a Shaikh of Imam Al-Bukhari, may Allah have mercy upon him, – stated in his Tafsir with a chain of narration to Niyaar Bin Mukram al-Aslamee, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “When Allah revealed these verses to His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, the leaders of Makkah said, ‘O Ibn Abee Quhaafah (i.e. Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq)! What is this that your companion (i.e. the Prophet) says?’ He said, ‘By Allah, it is the speech of Allah’. They said, ‘Then let there be a bet between us on the basis that the Romans will defeat the Persians between three to nine years’. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, betted them. Many polytheists entered into Islam when that occurred. Ibn Mukram [i.e. Niyaar] said, ‘The Quraish wanted the Persians to be victorious since they were not people of the Book, nor did they believe in the Resurrection. So when Allah revealed these verses, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq went out, proclaiming throughout Makkah, ‘Alif, Laam, Meem. The Romans have been defeated. In the nearest land, and they, after their defeat, will be victorious, within three to nine years’. Some of the Quraish said, ‘Then this is (a bet) between us and you. Your companion claims that the Romans will defeat the Persians within three to nine years, so why not have a bet on that between us and you?’ Abu Bakr said, ‘This was before betting has been forbidden’. So Abu Bakr and the idolaters made a bet, and they said to Abu Bakr, ‘What do you think – Bid’ means something between three and nine years, so let us agree on the middle’. They agreed on six years; then six years passed without the Romans being victorious. The idolaters took what they won in the bet from Abu Bakr. When the seventh year came and the Romans were finally victorious over the Persians, the Muslims rebuked Abu Bakr for agreeing to six years. He said, ‘Because Allah said: ‘In Bid’ years’. Many people became Muslims at that time. This hadeeth has also been reported by At-Tirmidhee Numbers, 3193 and 3194 and this story related to it is Mutawaatir. (2)

Reflections on some statements of Al-al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi al-Mad’khali [67 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Hudhaifah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Trials will be presented to the hearts of people like a reed mat woven stick by stick and any heart afflicted by them will have a black mark put into it, but any heart that rejects them will have a white mark put into it. Thus there will be two kinds of hearts: one is pure like a white gemstone and it will not be harmed by any tribulation as long as the heavens and earth endure, and the other is black and dusty like a worn-out vessel, neither recognizing good nor rejecting evil, but rather immersed in its desires.” [Sahih Muslim 144]

We seek refuge with Allah from the trials and desires that cause the hearts to become like a worn out vessel, corrupts them, places them in blindness and darkness; neither recognising good nor rejecting evil, instead immersed in their (evil) desires.

Reflections on some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [66 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

None follows Allah’s Guidance and knows the station of this guidance, except one whom Allah has given (sound) intellect and certain knowledge. He knows the consequences and outcomes behind matters, where ignorance, kufr, Shirk and (evil) desires will finally take its people, and where (sound) knowledge, guidance, (sound) intellect and understanding will finally take the person upon (its path).

Then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery. But whosoever turns away from My Reminder [i.e. neither believes in this Qur’an nor acts on its orders, etc.] verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection. He will say: “O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight [before].” [Allah] will say: “Like this, Our Ayat [proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.] came unto you, but you disregarded them [i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them], and so this Day, you will be neglected [in the Hell-fire, away from Allah’s Mercy].” [Surah Taha 123-126]

Ignorance is the cause of turning away from the remembrance of Allah, thus the person wanders blindly in the darkness of ignorance, so his final destination, end and abode is that which Allah [The Blessed and Exalted] stated in this noble verse, that he will be raised up blind, so he will say, “Why have you raised me up blind?” Allah will say to him, “Like this, Our Ayat came unto you, but you disregarded them, and so this Day, you will be neglected [in the Hell-fire, away from Allah’s Mercy].

Reflections on some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [58 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Justice is equity. The one who bears witness, it is obligated to him to establish his testimony on truthfulness, justice, fairness, integrity, and precision, and bears witness even against himself. Allah has obligated to (His) servants to bear witness even against themselves, their fathers, and relatives. With great sadness, I think this example is very rare. With great sadness, the one who bears witness against himself or relatives is very rare. With great sadness, even with regards to one who claims (to be upon) Slafiyyah, when trials occur, he forgets to testify for Allah. I say (this) about the one who claims to be upon Salafiyyah, whereas  the truthful Salafi fulfils testimony for Allah, The Blessed and Exalted; speaks the truth, aids the truth, and testifies to truth. A false (bogus) Salafi is exposed by trials, exposing their true reality and fakery. Therefore, be witnesses for Allah, even if it is against yourselves, parents or relatives.

Reflections from some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [43 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

We do not say that there are people of Ijtihad amongst the proponents of innovation in religious matters because they are followers of (vain) desires, and Allah and His Messenger have testified to this. The misguided innovator in religious matters stirs up discord and errs, and then says to you, “This is Ijtihad”. When Hikmatiyar and the misguided parties (in Afghanistan) murdered Shaikh Jameel Ur-Rahman, they said: “This is Ijtihad”. They do not fall into an affair of misguidance or a calamity except that they say, “This is Ijtihad”. This is (tantamount) to diluting Islam, falsehood, misguidance, bidah and confounding truth with falsehood when the mistakes of the (true and qualified scholars of Ijtihad)- for which they are rewarded- are placed at the same level with innovation in religious matters about which the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, declared to be destined for the hell fire”.

The danger of Mubtadi’ah

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The Fitna (instigated) by a Mubtadi undermines the foundation of the religion, while the Fitna of a sinner pertains to forbidden desires. Unlike a sinner, the Mubtadi obstructs people’s path to the straight path, hinders them from it, invalidates the message delivered by the Messenger, and obstructs (access) to rewards in the Afterlife. Conversely, a sinner’s journey (towards attaining rewards) is delayed by his sins.

Reflections from some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [37 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The questioner said: Our Shaikh, I love you for the sake of Allah. I am new to true Salafiyyah and I dont know what do at present. Guide me, may Allah bless you.

Response: Establish the prayer, pay the Zakat, and sincerely devote your religion to Allah (alone), the Lord of the worlds; seek knowledge of the Shariah from its fundamental sources, and cooperate with your Salafi brothers upon righteousness and piety to convey this message. Spend in its path if you possess what you can spend to aid it, perform all righteous deeds, fulfill the obligations, learn the pillars of Islam and its regulations, the Salafi methodology – the foundational principles and subsidiary matters within it. This is encompassed in Allah’s statement: [إِلَّا الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ – Except those who believe and do righteous deeds]. [Al-Asr 3]

Therefore, it is obligated to you to (adhere) to true Iman, righteous deeds, and cooperating upon righteousness and piety. [Marhaban Yaa Taalib Al-Ilm 467]

Some verses of the Qur’an regarding wind

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And among His Signs is this, that He sends the winds as glad tidings, giving you a taste of His Mercy (i.e. rain), and that the ships may sail at His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, in order that you may be thankful. [Ar-Rum. 46]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Allah is He Who sends the winds, so they raise clouds, and spread them along the sky as He wills, and then break them into fragments, until you see rain drops come forth from their midst! Then when He has made them fall on whom of His slaves as He will, lo! they rejoice! And verily before that (rain), just before it was sent down upon them, they were in despair! Look then at the effects (results) of Allah’s Mercy, how He revives the earth after its death. Verily! That (Allah) Who revived the earth after its death shall indeed raise the dead (on the Day of Resurrection), and He is Able to do all things. [Ar-Rum.48-50]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And it is He Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy (rain). Till when they have carried a heavy-laden cloud, We drive it to a land that is dead, then We cause water (rain) to descend thereon. Then We produce every kind of fruit therewith. Similarly, We shall raise up the dead, so that you may remember or take heed. [Al-A’raf. 57]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use to mankind, and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky and makes the earth alive therewith after its death, and the moving (living) creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein, and in the veering of winds and clouds which are held between the sky and the earth, are indeed Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs, etc.) for people of understanding. [Al-Baqarah. 164]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And We send the winds fertilizing (to fill heavily the clouds with water), then caused the water (rain) to descend from the sky, and We gave it to you to drink, and it is not you who are the owners of its stores [i.e. to give water to whom you like or to withhold it from whom you like]. [Al-Hijr. 22]

Allah [The Exalted] stated:

So, We subjected to him (i.e. Prophet Sulaymaan) the wind, it blew gently to his order whithersoever he willed. [Saad.36]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And to Solomon (We subjected) the wind, its morning (stride from sunrise till midnoon) was a month’s (journey), and its afternoon (stride from the midday decline of the sun to sunset) was a month’s (journey i.e. in one day he could travel two months’ journey). [Saba. 12]

Allah [The Exalted] stated:

And to Sulaiman (Solomon) (We subjected) the wind strongly raging, running by his command towards the land which We had blessed. And of everything We are the All-Knower. [Al-Anbiya. 81]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And in Aad (there is also a sign) when We sent against them the barren wind. It spared nothing that it reached, but blew it into broken spreads of rotten ruins. [Adh-Dhaariyaat. 41-42]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Verily, We sent against them (i.e. the disbelievers of Aad) a furious wind of harsh voice on a day of evil omen and continuous calamity. Plucking out men as if they were uprooted stems of date-palms. Then, how (terrible) was My Torment and My Warnings? [Al-Qamar. 19-21]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Then, when they (.e. the disbelievers of Aad) saw it as a dense cloud coming towards their valleys, they said: “This is a cloud bringing us rain!” Nay, but it is that (torment) which you were asking to be hastened! a wind wherein is a painful torment! Destroying everything by the Command of its Lord! So they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings! Thus do We recompense the people who are Mujrimun (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, etc.)! [Al-Ahqaaf. 24-25]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

He(Allah) it is Who enables you to travel through land and sea, till when you are in the ships and they sail with them with a favourable wind, and they are glad therein, then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them from all sides, and they think that they are encircled therein, they invoke Allah, making their Faith pure for Him Alone, saying: “If You (Allah) deliver us from this, we shall truly be of the grateful.” [Yunus. 22]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back a second time to sea and send against you a hurricane of wind and drown you because of your disbelief, then you will not find any avenger therein against Us? [Al-Israa. 69]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

If He wills, He causes the wind to cease, then they would become motionless on the back (of the sea). Verily, in this are signs for everyone patient and grateful. [Ash-Shuraa. 33]

Allah [The Exalted] stated:

Hunafa’ Lillah (i.e. to worship none but Allah), not associating partners (in worship, etc.) unto Him and whoever assigns partners to Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place. [Al-Hajj. 31]

Allah [The Exalted] stated:

And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is Able to do everything. [Al-Kahf. 45]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And it is Allah Who sends the winds, so that they raise up the clouds, and We drive them to a dead land, and revive therewith the earth after its death. As such (will be) the Resurrection! [Faatir. 9]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

The parable of those who disbelieve in their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a stormy day, they shall not be able to get aught of what they have earned. That is the straying, far away (from the Right Path). [Ibrahim. 18]

Ibn Abbas [may Allaah be pleased with him and his father] narrated: “The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] was the most generous amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Jibreel visited him, and Jibreel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet used to recite the Noble Qur’aan to Jibreel, and when Jibreel met him, he used to be more generous than the fair wind [sent by Allah with glad tidings (rain) in readiness and haste to do charitable deeds]”. [Sahih al-Bukhari 1902]

Zain Ibnul Muneer [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “The intent behind the likeness (or comparison) between the Prophet’s [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] generosity and the fair wind, is that the wind is one of mercy which Allaah [The Exalted] sends and sends down rain that falls everywhere- both on a dead land [i.e. falls on a dry land and revives it] as well as the land that is not dead; (likewise) the Prophet’s good conduct and benevolence benefits everyone – the poor, the wealthy and the one who has enough – more than the rain that falls [after the arrival of that] fair wind”. (1)

Imam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “He [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] was the most generous amongst the people with regards to wealth and bestowing (things) to the people, and not that he was (only) generous after being asked. And in the final year (of his life), Jibreel met him twice and he finished the recitation of the (Qur’an) twice. And from the benefits of (this hadeeth) is that: (a) it is more virtuous to study and recite the Qur’an at night with the righteous people, the scholars and the good people. The Prophet recited (the Qur’aan to Jibreel) to receive that which Allaah has of reward [i.e. reward in the afterlife]. (b) Generosity in times (when people are in need) and in Ramadaan is something sought after [in the religion of Islam]. (2)

Supplication During a Windstorm

O Allah, I ask You for the good of it, for the good of what it contains, and for the good of what is sent with it. I seek refuge in You from the evil of it, from the evil of what it contains, and from the evil that is sent with it. [ Muslim 2/616]

Forgiveness

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Forgive and you will be forgiven”.

Al-Allaamah Zayd Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

This statement of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, is a clarification that reward is given in accordance with the deed performed. If a person is one with a forgiving character when taking (something that belongs to him), when giving, buying and selling, and when dealing with his family, neighbours and companions; rather when dealing with the society and people -wherever that may be, then indeed reward given in accordance with the deed. He will be forgiven – meaning, Allah will forgive him by making his affairs easy, forgive him by wiping away his sins (a) and facilitate him with a people who will deal with him in the same manner he deals with (other) people. [at-Taleeqaat Al-Maleehah Alaa Al-Ahadith As-Sahihah. 1/75]

a: Imam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [rahimahullaah] stated a principle related the unrestricted Ahaadeeth in which a mention is made regarding the expiation of sins, that they are restricted by the texts regarding the abandonment of major sins – either restricted by the statement of Allah:

If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall remit from you your (small) sins. (Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 31)]; or by the statement of the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], “The five prayers, Friday to Friday, and Ramadan to Ramadan will expiate the sins committed between them, as long as major sins are avoided”.
