Hadeeth: [Olive Oil Is From a Blessed Tree] – With Short Commentary By Shaikh Zaid Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi Wasallam] said, “Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for indeed it is from a blessed tree”.

Shaikh Zaid Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah] said, “This is something permissible. There is great benefit in olive oil and from that is what the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi Wasallam] has stated, “Eat and anoint yourselves with it”, and he mentioned the reason that it is a blessed tree. And it suffices that Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] made an oath by it in the Qur’aan, saying: [وَٱلتِّينِ وَٱلزَّيۡتُونِ – By the fig, and the olive]. [Surah At-teen. Aayah 1] And Allaah also praised it a second time in Surah Al-Muminoon when He said: [وَشَجَرَةً۬ تَخۡرُجُ مِن طُورِ سَيۡنَآءَ تَنۢبُتُ بِٱلدُّهۡنِ وَصِبۡغٍ۬ لِّلۡأَڪِلِينَ  – And a tree (olive) that springs forth from Mount Sinai, that grows oil, and (it is a) relish for the eaters]. [Surah Al-Muminoon. Aayah 20] [An Excerpt from At-taleeqaat Al-Maleehah Alaa Silsilah Al-Ahaadeeth As-Saheehah. Page Vol1. Page 377. Slightly paraphrased]

Nothing Equal to That Love Between Husband And Wife Who Truly Love Each Other!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: “There is nothing like marriage, for two who love one another”. [Ref 1]

Meaning: There is no bond like that bond between two people in marriage who love one another, for if they are married and love is present between them, it will increase in strength every day. [Ref 2]

[Ref 1] Reported by Imaam Ibn Maajah 2/153. Hadeeth Number: 1847. Declared Authentic by Imaam Albaanee in As-Saheehah 2/196]; [Ref 2: Sharh Sunan Ibn Maajah by As-Sindee (rahimahullaah)… Hadeeth Number 1847’ Book of Marriage- Chapter: The Excellence of Marriage]

Hadeeth- Forbidden to Sit at a Table Where Alcohol is Consumed And Forbidden to Lie Down On Stomach Whilst Eating] -With Short Commentary By Shaikh Zaid [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Ibn Umar [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] said:

“The Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] forbade [two affairs related to eating and drinking]: sitting at a table where alcohol is consumed  and a man who eats whilst lying on his stomach”.

Shaikh Zaid Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah] said: In this hadeeth there is an indication regarding the manners of eating food, because indeed these two deeds are not part of good manners. Firstly, sitting at a table where alcohol is consumed: It is not permissible for a Muslim to sit at a table where alcohol is consumed, because alcohol is the mother of all evil and a person is not safe [in such a situation]. The least sin regarding this affair is that one has shown approval to the one who consumes alcohol at a table. Secondly, it is [the deed of] a man who eats whilst lying down on his stomach; and it has been reported in a narration that the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said about lying on one’s stomach whilst sleeping, “Indeed, it is a way of lying down that Allaah hates”. [Saheeh Al-Jaami 2271] It is not permissible for a man to lie on his stomach, rather he should lie down on his back, or on his right side and that is noblest manner of lying down, or on his left side and there is no harm in that.

Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa]-Mother of The Believers – Reminded a Lady to Limit Herself to The Authentic Sunnah

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Ataa [rahimahullaah] narrated, “A woman said in the presence of Aa’isha, ‘If the wife of such and such gives birth, we’ll slaughter a camel’. So, Aa’isha said, ‘But the Sunnah is that two sheep are to be slaughter for the birth of a boy and one sheep for the birth of a girl’”.

Shaikh Zaid said, “In this hadeeth there’s evidence that Ghuluww [going beyond what the Shar’ee’ah has legislated- neither commanded nor recommended] is forbidden, and that adherence to the Sunnah is the truth. If a newly born child is a boy, then his guardian [i.e. father] should slaughter two sheep; and if the child is a girl, one sheep is slaughtered for her. One should not obligate on himself to slaughter a camel, for indeed he has not been commanded to do that. Limiting oneself to the Sunnah is the good thing to do instead of encroaching its legislated boundaries.

What to Strive For When One Hopes to Meet Allaah!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

 Allaah [The Most High] said:

لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ۬ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأَخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرً۬ا

Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. [Surah Al-Ahzaab Ayah 21]

[لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ۬ – Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow]: Meaning: [A perfect] righteous example; [لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأَخِرَ – for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day]: Ibn Abbaas said, ‘’For the one who hopes for Allaah’s reward and the bliss [He has kept for His slaves in the Afterlife]. [وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرً۬ا – and remembers Allah much]: Meaning: Remembers Allaah a lot, because the one who truly remembers Allaah is that one who obeys Allaah’s commands [and keeps away from what He has forbidden] unlike the one who is heedless of his Lord. [Ref 1]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allah (His Words, the Qur’an) and His Messenger, to judge between them, is that they say: “We hear and we obey.” And such are the prosperous ones. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, fears Allah, and keeps his duty (to Him), such are the successful ones. [Surah An-Noor Aayaat 51-52]

The true believers are those whose actions testify to the truthfulness of their Eemaan when they are called to the [Book of] Allaah and the authentic Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger to judge between them – whether it agrees with what they desire or not; for [when they called to that judgement] they say: [سَمِعۡنَا وَأَطَعۡنَا‌ۚ -We hear and we obey]: Meaning: We have heard the judgement of Allaah and that of His Messenger; we respond to the one who call us to it and we obey it wholeheartedly without any reservation. Then Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ – And such are the prosperous ones]. Then Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَمَن يُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۥ وَيَخۡشَ ٱللَّهَ وَيَتَّقۡهِ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَآٮِٕزُونَ  – And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, fears Allah, and keeps his duty (to Him), such are the successful ones]. [Ref 2]

Be Not Like Those Who Say: “We have heard,” But They Hear Not!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

 Allaah [The Most High]:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلاَ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ

وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ سَمِعۡنَا وَهُمۡ لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ

O you who believe! Obey Allaah and His Messenger, and turn not away from him [i.e. Messenger Muhammad] while you are hearing. And be not like those who say: “We have heard,” but they hear not. [Surah al-Anfaal Aayaat 20-21]

[يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ – O you who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger]: Meaning: [Obey Allaah and His Messenger] by fulfilling what they have commanded and keeping away from what they have forbidden. [وَلاَ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ – and turn not away from him (i.e. Messenger Muhammad) while you are hearing]: Meaning: Do not turn away from obedience to Allaah and obedience to His Messenger, whilst you are hearing what is been recited to you from the Book of Allaah [i.e. the Qur’aan, Allaah’s commands, admonitions and advices]- because turning away will place you in the most perilous situation. [وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ سَمِعۡنَا وَهُمۡ لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ – And be not like those who say: ‘’We have heard,’’ but they hear not]: Meaning: Do not suffice with claims that are devoid of reality, for it is something displeasing to Allaah and His Messenger. Eemaan is not wishful thinking and merely adorning oneself with it [outwardly]; rather it is that which firmly settles in the hearts and is affirmed by one’s deeds.  [Source: (Tayseer al-Kareem ar-Rahmaan Fee Tafseer Kalaam al-Mannaan). slightly paraphrased]

One Can Never Be a True Believer Until He or She Accepts The Judgements of Allaah’s Messenger In All Disputes

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said: [ وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ – We sent no Messenger, but to be obeyed by Allah’s Leave] [Surah An-Nisaa’ Ayah 64]

Allaah [The Most High] commanded and urged us to obey the Messenger and willingly submit to his path. He [The Most High] informed us that the purpose behind sending the Messengers is so that they are obeyed [and followed] in everything they command and keep away from everything they prohibited. This shows us that the Messengers are infallible in that which they convey from Allaah, command and prohibit, because Allaah commanded us to follow them unconditionally. Had it not been that they were infallible in that which they convey from Allaah’s and the fact that they never legislate anything [by themselves], then Allaah would not have commanded us to obey them unconditionally.

Also, Allaah [The Most High] said in Surah An-Nisaa Ayah 65: [ فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ حَتَّىٰ يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُواْ فِىٓ أَنفُسِہِمۡ حَرَجً۬ا مِّمَّا قَضَيۡتَ وَيُسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمً۬ا – But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad ) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission].

The people can never be true believers until they accept the judgements of Allaah’s Messenger in their disputes – in every affair about which they differ- except the issues of Ijmaa; because Ijmaa does not take place except based on evidence in the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah. And it is not enough that people merely [and only] accept the judgements of the Messenger in that which they differ amongst themselves, rather there cannot be any resistance and reservation in their hearts after that judgement. It is not enough to merely demonstrate one’s acceptance; rather one has to submit wholeheartedly and willingly with a heart filled with ease about that judgement – in private and public.

Therefore, judging by what Islam has commanded without harbouring any reservations is a proof of one’s Eemaan-a proof of one’s obedience in fulfilling perfectly what he has been commanded and keeping away from what He has been forbidden. And whoever perfects these affairs, then indeed he has perfected all affairs related to his practice of the religion. And whoever abandons the Messenger’s judgement by not believing that it is the judgement that should be to be established, then he is an unbeliever. [Ref 1] As for the one who abandons it, but firmly believes that it is truth, then the judgement passed on him is similar to the one passed against the sinners who have not left the fold of Islaam.

The Main Thing That Will Earn Us The Love of Allaah!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said: [قُلۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تُحِبُّونَ ٱللَّهَ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى يُحۡبِبۡكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَيَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ ذُنُوبَكُمۡ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ۬ رَّحِيمٌ۬ – Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “If you (really) love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful]”. [Surah Aal Imraan Ayah 31]

This Ayah is conveyed to everyone who claims to love Allaah, whilst he is not one who truly follows Allaah’s Prophet Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam]- by obeying the Prophet’s command and keeping away from what he has forbidden. Therefore, unless he [i.e. the one who claims to love Allaah] truly follows the Messenger, then indeed he is not truthful in his claim [i.e. that he loves Allaah] [Ref 1]

Allaah [The Most High] also said: [قُلۡ أَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَ‌ۖ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ – Say (O Muhammad): “Obey Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad).” But if they turn away, then Allah does not like the disbelievers]: Meaning: Say O Messenger [to the people]: Obey Allaah by following His Book [i.e. the Qur’aan], and obey the Messenger by following his Sunnah -whether you were present during his lifetime or present after he has passed away. [Surah Aali Imraan Ayah 32] [Ref 2]

Allaah [The Most High] also said: [يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ – O you who believe! Do not put (yourselves) forward before Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Verily! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. [يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ  – O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet..] [Surah Al-Hujuraat Aayaat 1 & 2]

When it is the case that Allaah forbade [them] from giving precedence to [themselves] over the Messenger, then which type of giving precedence to oneself over the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] can be more severe than giving precedence to one’s intellect over the revelation he was sent with? Many of the Salaf have stated [that this ayah means]: ‘’Do not say anything [about the religion] until the Messenger speaks and do not act until he commands you.’’

The Most Disobedient Person Amongst The People Is That One Who Gives Precedence to His Intellect Or The Intellect of Another Person Over The Revelation The Messenger Was Sent With

The most disobedient person amongst the people and the most severe with regards to giving precedence to him over the Messenger is that one who gives precedence to his intellect or the intellect of another person over the revelation the Messenger was sent with. And when it is the case that Allaah has indeed forbidden them from raising their voices above the voice of the Messenger, then how about raising their intellects above the statements of the Messenger and the revelation he came with?! [Ref 3]

[Ref 1: (Tafseer Al-Muyassar). slightly paraphrased]; [Ref 2: (Tafseer Al-Muyassar). slightly paraphrased]; [Ref 3: (Al-Waabil as-Sayyib’ by Imaam Ibnul Qayyim’ page 21). slightly paraphrased]
