The Principles of Debate – By Ustaadh Abu Hakeem

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

All praise is due to Allaah. The Salafiyyoon are serious people and they do not entertain the foolishness of any caller to deviation. Some misguided young fools have adopted a methodology for themselves related to debate – arguing, speculating, jesting and causing confusion- yet they seek to attribute this foolishness of theirs to knowledge and the way of the Salaf.

Indeed, a serious person who truly desires insight into affairs of knowledge should neither enter into what he is not worthy of nor should he approach any affair of the religion based on ignorance. Therefore, we remind ourselves and our younger brothers and sisters that time is precious and short, so let us spend it in what will increase us in sound understanding and righteous deeds.

As this subject matter regarding debate is one that some have entered into due to ignorance and short-sightedness, we remind ourselves and our younger brothers and sisters that we educate ourselves on this subject matter if possible – not for the purpose of debating, rather we learn based on proof and insight in order to safeguard ourselves from the methodology of those foolish ones.

Here are a series of lectures by Ustaadh Abu Hakeem (may Allaah preserve him) regarding the principles of debate. So exercise patience upon seeking after a sound understanding –InShaaAllaah- based on these tremendous series of lectures if you have extra time besides the regular lessons attended in the Salafi Masaajid and Centres. We ask Allaah for beneficial knowledge and righteous actions. Aameen

Do Not Be Jealous of The One Who Benefits Others – Ala Shaykh

Shaykh Sāliḥ Āl ash-Shaykh (hafithahullāh) said:

“Do not be jealous of the one who has memorised more than you or is more knowledgeable than you or is more beneficial to the slaves (of Allāh) than you, rather be happy that someone is establishing the rights of Allāh (عز وجل) and the rights of the slaves.”

“I’m Not Sure If I Recited Faatiha” – Shaykh Fawzaan

Ash Shaykh Saalih Al Fawzaan (hafidahullah) was asked regarding a woman who prayed but does not remember if she has recited Al-Faatihah or not?

Answer:
If this was from the angle of Waswaas [Satanic whisperings] and it occurs a lot to her then indeed she should not pay attention to it.

As for if this was accidental (i.e. left out unintentionally) then the origin is that she has not read it, therefore it is a must that she reads it.

What Do I Owe My Parents? – Shaykh Zayd bin Haadi

Al Allaamah Zayd bin Haadi Al Madhkhalee (rahimahullah) said:

“The greatest act of good (towards parents) is that the son whom Allaah has bestowed upon him with some (Islamic) knowledge, that from it, he offers (teaches) it to his parents as a first priority.

And this is better than being good to them by giving them money or anything other than that.

Then (it follows that) he should be good and dutiful to them with good words and good actions which pleases Allaah, then with that which pleases both of them (Parents).

[This applies to both Son and Daughter]”

The Best Gift from Parent to Child – Shaykh Zayd bin Haadi

Al Allaamah Zayd bin Haadi Al Madkhalee (rahimahullah) said:

And the best thing that a father can give and present to his
son is teaching him Islamic knowledge and to connect him with the teachings of Islam and also to take care of him in this great affair, Along with safeguarding his body and his character, morals and manners. And his care is one that should be complete (in every way) and he (the father) is rewarded for it.

Therefore, what great reward will he have with Allaah the Blessed and the Most High.

And the female child is the same as the male child in regards to the care required from both parents. And this is with regards to the father. As for the mother, then her reward is also according to the good she does for her son and daughter.

Knowledge is Priceless – Shaykh Zayd bin Haadi

Al Allaamah Zayd bin Haadi Al Madkhalee (rahimahullah) said:

“Knowledge is priceless, and its seeker has undoubtedly known its value, and he has given his utmost effort for him to become a patient and forbearing teacher, because he is an inheritor (of knowledge) from the inheritors of the Noble Prophet (upon him be the salaah and salaam).”

The Calamity of Ignorance & Its Trial – Shaykh Zayd bin Haadi

Al Allaamah Zayd bin Haadi Al Madkhalee (rahimahullah) said:

“And People are not exactly similar, the reality is that ignorance is like (different levels of) darknesses, and ignorance is from the greatest calamity and trial, especially when Allaah grants and favours you with an opportunity in your life for you to learn (Islamic knowledge), you instead spend your entire lifetime in enjoying your worldly physical existence, this is what (true and great) loss is.”

Follow the Evidences & Not Innovate – Shaykh Zayd Al Madkhalee

Shaykh Zayd ibn Haadi Al Madkhalee (Rahimahullah) said:

Indeed the people are commanded to follow (evidences) and they are prohibited from innovating (in the religion), since they are not allowed except to hold firm to the text and evidences from the Quraan and Sunnah, upon the understanding of the predecessors of this Ummah and those who walked upon their way step by step (exactly without any change).

And there is no allowable pathway to divert away from this to the statements of the people of innovation and misguidances and the people of opposing opinions to the correct Islamic belief and his upright and sound methodology.

What Knowledge Demands – Shaykh Zayd Al Madkhalee

Al Allaamah Shaykh Zayd bin Haadi (Rahimahullah) said:

It is not possible for knowledge to be gained except by learning. And learning must be undertaken and carried out with hard work (effort and seriousness) and diligence (careful and persistent effort), and it does not have an end point, up until a person departs from the life where he acts (The worldly life) to the life in which he is recompensed (The Hereafter) for his actions.

What Is Said to People Who Innovate – Shaykh Ubayd Al Jaabiree

Shaykh Ubayd Al Jaabiree (Allah preserve him) said:

It is said to those who innovate:

“Do you believe that Allah has perfected his religion, in his book and the Sunnah of his messenger (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam), or not?”

So if he said:

“No”,

He has disbelieved, and he’s become from those who have legislated that which Allah did not give permission for. [Ref 1- see footnote 1 at the end of this article]

And if he said:

“Yes”

Then it is said to him:

“Is this (action of yours) from that which came in the Quran or Sunnah?!

It is not allowed for you, except to abandon that deed. And if not, then you have become a misguided innovator and you are not a good doer.” [Ref 2- see footnote 2 at the end of this article]

Finally, it should be absolutely clear to all of us (commoners) that the people of knowledge (scholars and those students whom the scholars have stated that they are qualified in this affair) are the ones with the ability to establish unambiguous proofs, remove doubts and pass the judgement of Takfeer or Tabdee. May Allaah protect us. Aameen
