The Importance of Truthfulness – By Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [Part 6]

Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali, may Allah preserve him, continued…

Kab Bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

I never remained behind Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, from any expedition which he undertook except the Battle of Tabuk and that of the Battle of Badr. So far as the Battle of Badr is concerned, nobody was blamed for remaining behind as Allah’s Messenger and the Muslims (did not set out for attack but for waylaying) the caravan of the Quraish, but it was Allah Who made them confront their enemies without their intention (to do so). I had the honour to be with Allah’s Messenger on the night of ‘Aqaba when we pledged our allegiance to Islam and it was more dear to me than my participation in the Battle of Badr, although Badr was more popular amongst people as compared with that (Tabuk). And this is my story of remaining back from Allah’s Messenger on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk. Never did I possess enough means and (my circumstances) more favourable than at the occasion of this expedition. And, by Allah, I had never before this expedition simultaneously in my possession two rides. Allah’s Messenger set out for this expedition in extremely hot season; the journey was long and the land (which he and his army had to cover) was waterless and he had to confront a large army, so he informed the Muslims about the actual situation (they had to face), so that they should adequately equip themselves for this expedition, and he also told them the destination where he intended to go. And the Muslims who accompanied Allah’s Messenger at that time were large in numbers but there was no proper record of them. Ka’b (further) said: Few were the persons who wanted to absent themselves, and were under the impression that they could easily conceal themselves (and thus remain undetected) until revelations from Allah, the Exalted and Glorious (descended in connection with them). And Allah’s Messenger set out on an expedition when the fruits were ripe and their shadows had been lengthened. I had weakness for them and it was during this season that Allah’s Messenger made preparations and the Muslims too along with them. I also set out in the morning so that I should make preparations along with them but I came back and did nothing and said to myself: I have enough (to make preparations) as soon as I like. And I went on doing this (postponing my preparations) until people were about to depart and it was in the morning that Allah’s Messenger set out and the Muslims too along with him, but I made no preparations. I went early in the morning and came back, but I made no decision. I continued to do so until they (the Muslims) hastened and covered a good deal of distance. I also made up my mind to march on and to meet them. Would that I would have done that but perhaps it was not destined for me. After the departure of Allah’s Messenger as I went out amongst people, I was shocked to find that I did not find anyone like me but people who were labelled as hypocrites or the people whom Allah granted exemption because of their incapacity.

This excerpt highlights the significance of the Pledge of Aqabah and its position in his heart, as it embodied profound meanings that represents the robust foundation upon which is established the migration to Madinah by the companions of Allah’s Messenger, the support given by the Ansar, the establishment the Islamic state, and served as the foundation for Jihad and the strength of Islam and the Muslims. From this foundation emerged the various expeditions and campaigns, leading to the defeat of apostasy and the expansion of Islamic armies across the world, illuminating hearts with the light of Iman and guiding them out from darkness into light. It was from this understanding that this noble companion recognised the status of the Pledge of Aqabah, expressing that he would not be pleased with any substitute for it, as he stated: “It was more beloved to me than participation in the battle of badr”.

He spoke about the circumstances surrounding his absence from the Battle of Tabuk with the courage of the truthful, in a clear and illuminated manner, overflowing with truthfulness from a heart exemplifying Iman, and a soul filled with integrity and truthfulness whose similarity is not witness in that type of dreadful situation where the cowardly the hypocrites would resort to lying and false pretenses by fabricating excuses that were swiftly exposed by Allah, leading to their disgrace and ultimately consigning them to the abode of destruction (hell fire).

He clearly stated that his absence was not due to poverty or hardship, nor was it a result of incapacity or weakness, as he had previously participated in the Battle while in a condition less favourable than that of this particular expedition. He said: “Never did I possess enough means and (my circumstances) more favourable than at the occasion of this expedition. And, by Allah, I had never before this expedition simultaneously in my possession two rides”.

He clearly stated the reasons that undermined his resolve in participating in Jihad (Battle of Tabuk, which included the intense heat, the long journey, the perilous vast terrains between Madinah and Tabuk, and the numerous forces of the Romans and Arabs allied with them. He mentioned that the Messenger of Allah informed the people of their duty to prepare themselves for their expedition.

He clearly stated what may be one of the most significant reasons for staying behind (.e. not going for the Tabuk expedition), which is the ripe fruits and good shade. He then clearly expressed it despite the possibility of (being able) to conceal it, but his truthful soul did not allow him except to reveal it, (saying) “I had a weakness for them”, in other words, “My soul inclined towards them”. This represents a profound level of truthfulness that very few individuals attain. He mentioned his internal struggle and hesitation regarding joining the Messenger of Allah.

He mentioned the pain of regret and sorrow that accompanied his state of being left behind, as he found no example of his condition except for a man deeply entrenched in hypocrisy or a person whom Allah has excused due to weakness. This reflects the vitality of his heart and being truthful in his Iman. [Paraphrased. Refer to the Arabic text here sidq ]

How to approach the month of Ramadan – By Imam Abdul Aziz Bin Baz

In The name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Imam, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated:

My advice to all Muslims is to fear Allah, the Exalted, and to welcome their blessed month with sincere repentance, pursue understanding in their religion and learn the rulings of fasting and their prayers. This is because the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him stated, “Whomever Allah wishes good for, He grants them understanding in religion.”

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “When Ramadan arrives, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained”.

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: On the first night of Ramadan, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. A caller says: “O seeker of good, come forth; and O seeker of evil, refrain.” And Allah has those whom He frees from the Fire, and this occurs every night.

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward will have their previous (minor) sins forgiven. Whoever engage in prayer during Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward will have their previous (minor) sins forgiven. Whoever stands in prayer on the Night of Decree (Laylatul Qadr) with Iman and seeking reward will have their previous (minor) sins forgiven”.

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said that Allah, The Exalted, said: “Every deed of the child of Adam is for them, with a good deed rewarded tenfold up to seven hundred times, except for fasting, which is for Me, and I will reward it. The person abandons their desires, food, and drink for My sake. The fasting person experiences two joys: one at the time of breaking the fast and another when meeting their Lord. The scent of a fasting person’s mouth is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk.”

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “If someone insults you or wants to fight you, respond by saying, “I am a person who is fasting.”

He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: Whoever does not refrain from false speech and acting upon it, and ignorant behaviour, Allah has no need for him to abandon his food and drink.”

The advice for all Muslims is that they fear Allah, safeguard their fasts, and protect it from all types of sin. It is legislated for them to strive for goodness and to compete in acts of obedience, such as giving charity, increase in Qur’an recitation, the utterance of Subhaanallaah, Laa Ilaha illal lah, Allahu Akbar, and seeking forgiveness, as this is the month of the Quran.

Allah said: [شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيَ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ – The month of Ramadan (is the month in which) the Qur’an was revealed. [Al-Baqarah 185]

It is legislated for the believers to diligently engage in the recitation of the Quran. It is recommended for both men and women to increase their reading of the Quran both day and night. Each letter recited earns a reward, with each good deed multiplied tenfold, as reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Also, being cautious of sins and acts of disobedience, while enjoining truth on one another, offering mutual advice, enjoining what is good and forbidding evil.

It is a great month during which good deeds are multiplied, but also sins are considered greater within it than other months. It is obligated to a believer to strive diligently to fulfil what Allah has commanded and be cautious of what Allah has prohibited. One’s focus during Ramadan should increase and become greater, as well as the fact that it is legislated for the believer to engage earnestly in good deeds, such of charity, visiting the sick, attending funerals, maintaining family ties, and increasing the recitation of the Quran, remembrance of Allah, the utterance of Subhaanallaah, Laa Ilaha illal lah, seeking forgiveness, making du’a and other good actions, while hoping for Allah’s reward and fearing His punishment.

We ask Allah to grant success to Muslims in all that pleases Him. We ask Allah to enable us and all Muslims to observe fasting and engage in prayer with Iman and hoping for reward. We ask Allah to grant us, and all Muslims everywhere, understanding of the religion and to adhere to it steadfastly, as well as safeguarded from the causes of His anger and punishment.

I ask Him to grant success to all leaders of the Muslims and all Muslim rulers, guide them, improve their circumstances, and enable them to judge by Allah’s Sharia in all their affairs, in their worship, actions, and all matters concerning them. We ask Allah to grant them this success, in accordance with His statement:

وَأَنِ احْكُم بَيْنَهُم بِمَآ أَنزَلَ اللّهُ

And judge between them by what Allah has revealed. (Al-Ma’idah 49)

Allah said:

But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission. [An-Nisa 65]

Allah said:

O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and those in authority over you. And if you disagree among yourselves over anything then refer it back to Allāh and the Messenger if you truly believe in Allāh and the Last Day. That is better (conduct) and (leads to) the most excellent outcome. [An-Nisa 59]

Allah said:

Say: “Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger”. [An-Nur 54]

Allah said:

Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he prohibits you, keep away from it. [Al-Hashr 7]

This is what is obligated to all Muslims and their leaders. It is obligated to the leaders of the Muslims, their scholars, and the general populace, to fear Allah, adhere obediently to Allah’s Shariah, and judge by Allah’s Shariah among themselves. This is because the Shariah is the thing through which upright rectification, guidance, and a praiseworthy outcome (will be attained), as well as Allah’s Pleasure; through it is attained the truth that Allah has ordained and caution against injustice. [Footnote a]

We ask Allah to grant success, guidance, upright intention and action to everyone. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, as well as his family and companions. [Majmu Fatawa 15/50]

The Importance of Truthfulness – By Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [Part 5]

Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali, may Allah preserve him, continued…

Indeed, Allah has praised the companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and has commended them a lot in His book; and His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has praised them in many Prophetic reports. One of the most prominent and evident characteristics attributed to them is truthfulness, without which neither the religion nor the worldly affairs will be established (in an upright manner). These truthful people, along with their successors, have – with absolute truthfulness and integrity- transmitted to us the text of the Quran (based on its successive, numerous unbroken and authentic chains of transmission from every generation), the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger, including both the reports (based on their successive, numerous unbroken and authentic chains of transmission from every generation) and the ones (based on their authentic chain from a single trustworthy narrator), in which are established – with authenticity – the biography of Allah’s Messenger, his Jihad and military expeditions. [Footnote a]

The authentic books, the Musannafaat, the Jawami, the Ma’aajim, the books of creed and and other than them are replete with these transmissions. The Imams of Al-Jarh Wat-Tadeel, have distinguished – in them – the sound narrations from the weak ones, ensuring that the Ummah remains on a straight path, an upright methodology, a conscious and rightly guided life. They transmitted the biography of the noble companions, their different statuses and virtues, which distinguished them among all the nations of the prophets, and through this they are indeed the best nation brought forth for humanity. The books on the virtues of the companions and their statuses, along with all the compilations of the Sunnah, are replete with such (lofty characteristics).

Allah’s general praise for them regarding their lofty characteristics and truthfulness being one of them has already been stated in this speech. However, this speech of mine cannot accommodate the mention of (all) authentic accounts of their truthfulness, instead I will provide an example involving three individuals who experienced a specific single incident. The Most prominent among these three is that noble companion, Ka’b ibn Malik – that man whom Allah saved from the hell fire, hypocrisy, the wrath of Allah and His Messenger through his truthfulness. His story is well-known, and although it is lengthy and cannot be fully recounted here, I will select excerpts that illustrate the status of this companion and his peers in this event, from which a Muslim can draw lessons and inspiration from these truthful individuals. The Importance of Truthfulness- By Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [Part 2]

The Importance of truthfulness and its necessity for the (upright) establishment of the worldly and religious matters- By Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali, may Allah preserve him

Due to the (great) significance of truthfulness and its position in the Sight of Allah, as well as among Muslims and the sensible ones among humankind, Allah described Himself as one who is truthful. He said:

Say (O Muhammad): “Allah has spoken the truth; follow the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism, i.e. he used to worship Allah Alone), and he was not of polytheists. [Aal Imran 95]

This is a praise from Allah regarding Himself with this magnificent description (trait, quality). He is truthful in all His reports, in all His speech, in His divine legislations, in what He has narrated about His prophets and their nations, regarding the Children of Israel, their prophets, believers, and sinners, those who disbelieved among them, and regarding their alterations of Allah’s Books, namely the Torah and the Gospel, and taking their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allah). [Footnote a]

Allah said:

And who is truer in statement than Allah?! [Al-Nisa 87]

Allah said:

Allah’s Promise is the Truth, and whose words can be truer than those of Allah? (Of course, none). [Al-Nisa 122]

Allah said:

And We sent not (as Our Messengers) before you (O Muhammad) any but men, whom We inspired, (to preach and invite mankind to believe in the Oneness of Allah). So ask of those who know the Scripture if you know not. And We did not create them (the Messengers, with) bodies that ate not food, nor were they immortals; then We fulfilled to them the promise, and We saved them and those whom We willed, but We destroyed Al-Musrifun (i.e. extravagants in oppression, polytheism and in sin). [Al-Anbiya 7-9]

Allah said:

Thus We recompensed them for their rebellion [committing crimes like murdering the Prophets, eating of Riba (usury), etc.]. And verily, We are Truthful. [Al-An’am 146]

Thus, Allah has described Himself with this magnificent description (trait, quality): truthfulness in speech, truthfulness in actions, truthfulness in promises, and truthfulness in warnings. This includes truthfulness in the accounts about His prophets and beloved faithful servants, as well as truthfulness in the reports concerning His enemies, those who disbelieve in Him. Ruling on the statement of a person: “Yaa Rasulal lah”

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Question: A Muslim testifies that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and that Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,  is the Messenger of Allah, but when standing up or sitting down, he says, “Yaa Rasulal lah -O Messenger of Allah!” or “Yaa Abal Qasim – O Abu Qasim!” or “Yaa Abdal Qaadir- O Abdul Qadir!” or what similar to these statements related to Al-Isti’anah [i.e. seeking aid and assistance]. What is the ruling on this?

Answer: A person calling [i.e. invoking] the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, or other than him, such as Abdul Qadir Al-Jaylaani or Ahmad at-Tijaani,  when standing up or sitting down, and seeking assistance in that [action], or what is similar to this, in order to receive a benefit or repel harm- is a type of Shirk Akbar that was widespread during the pre-Islamic era of ignorance. Allah sent His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to put an end to it, save the people from it, guide the people to single out Allah in worship and supplication. This is because Al-Isti’aanah [seeking aid and assistance] is an act of worship and whoever performs it for other than Allah is a Mushrik. [Footnote a]

Allah directed and taught His slaves to say:

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything). [1:5]

Allah said:

And the mosques are for Allah (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allah]. [72:18]

Allah clarified that He (alone) controls harm and benefit; He alone removes harm and bestows blessings; He alone is the one who bestows good upon His slaves and preserves it for them. None can withold what Allaah gives and none can bestow that which Allah withholds. None can prevent what He has decreed and He is able to do all things. Allah said:

And invoke not besides Allah, any that will neither profit you, nor hurt you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers). ” And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He will. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [10:106-107]

Allah said:

He merges the night into the day (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the night are added to the hours of the day), and He merges the day into the night (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the day are added to the hours of the night). And He has subjected the sun and the moon, each runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmir (the thin membrane over the date-stone). If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them.  And none can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything). [35:13-14]

Allah said:

And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping. [46:5-6]

Allah said:

And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allah, any other ilah (god), of whom he has no proof, then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely! Al-Kafirun (the disbelievers in Allah and in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, pagans, idolaters, etc.) will not be successful. [23:117]

In these verses, Allah stated that it is disbelief and polytheism to invoke others besides Him. He informed (us) that there is none more astray than the one who invokes others besides Him.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father:

وإذا سألت فاسأل الله، وإذا استعنت فاستعن بالله

If you ask (i.e. supplicate), then ask Allah. And if you seek help, seek help from Allaah. [Sahih Al-Jami 7957]

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, also said:

الدعاء هو العبادة

Supplication is the core of worship. [Sahih Al-Jami 3407]

Reflections on some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali [45 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Many people humble themselves to one another more than they humble themselves to Allah – The Most High, The Most Great. It is neither permissible for a person to be a slave except to Allah, (i.e. not to be subservient to anyone in a manner that only Allah deserves) nor humble himself except to the Greatness of Allah. Allah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] said:

He is Allah besides Whom none has the right to be worshipped but He; the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allaah! [High is He] above all that they associate as partners with Him. He is Allaah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [Surah Al-Hashar’ Ayaat 23-24]

Examine those Ayaat in the last part of Surah Al-Hashar! The statement:

He is Allah besides Whom none has the right to be worshipped but He)]: This necessitates Tawheed Al-Uluhiyyah [The Oneness as the only one Who has the right to be worshipped].

The statement:

He is Allah, besides Whom none has the right to be worshipped but He, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen (open). He is the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful]: This necessitates Tawheed Al-Asmaa Was Sifaat [The Oneness of Allah in His Names and Attributes.

The statement:

He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms]. This necessitates Tawheed Ar-Roboobiyyah [The Oneness of Allah in His Lordship].
These few Ayaat in the last part of Surah Al-Hashr necessitate all the categories of Tawheed [Pure Islamic Monotheism]. [1]

Imam Ash-Shawkaanee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

The love for high status and wealth often leads to the abandonment of fairness, which in turn distances individuals from the truth. This abandonment further results in the concealment of truth and the failure to clarify what Allah has obligated. The two aforementioned matters are a greater enemy to an individual than a pair of hunting wolves, [Footnote a] as stated by Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] because it was the reason that led the people of the scripture to distort Allah’s Books and hide the clear evidences and guidance that were revealed to them, such as what happened to the Jewish Rabbis (i.e. those who deviated after the advents of their Prophets). Allah, in His Mighty Book, and the Messenger, through authentic narrations, have both informed us about this.

The Imam also stated:

We often see a man who holds a belief that aligns with truth and correctness. However, when he speaks to someone who disagrees with him- one who is inclined towards something of the innovated matters in the religion, and especially if that person holds a position of leadership or worldly wealth, not to mention a king, he agrees with him, strengthens, supports and aids him against others.

The least in such circumstances is that he would hide what he believes is the truth and show contempt – in the presence of a person from whom it is neither possible to receive harm nor benefit – towards what has become clear to him is the right thing, so, what about someone from whom harm and benefit are possible? This behavior is essentially prioritizing worldly things and the life of this world over the religion and the afterlife. If he observed and reflected upon what has happened to him, he would have realised that his inclination toward the (vain) desires of a man, two men, three or more individuals – among those he compliments within that gathering, conceals the truth to be in agreement with them and to gain affection, acquire their possessions, and avoid being isolated by them -is a deficiency in upholding the truth and tantamount to exalting falsehood. If it were not for the fact that these individuals hold a higher position in his eyes than the Lord, he would not have been inclined to their (vain) desires and abandoned what he knows to be what Allah wants and demands from His servants. [2]

Footnote a: Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “Two hungry wolves let loose among sheep are not more harmful than a person’s craving after wealth and status is to his Religion”. [3]

Imam Muhamad Ibn Saalih Al-Uthaymeen [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “Two hungry wolves let loose on a flock -then what will remain from the flock?! Even when a single wolf stops eating because its stomach is full, it still kills the rest of the flock; then what about two hungry wolves let loose on a flock!! Not a single will remain. Likewise, a person who craves wealth or status will corrupt the religion and because of this, it is obligated to a person that his intention is far removed from this- far removed from craving wealth and status in the religion. We ask Allah to aid us to accomplish this”. [4]

We ask Allah:

O Allah, I ask you for your love and the love of those who love you and the deeds that will bring me your love.

Two things whose presence would have completely destroyed the existence

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allah [The Exalted] said

Or have they taken (for worship) aliha (gods) from the earth who raise the dead? Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above what they attribute to Him! He cannot be questioned as to what He does, while they will be questioned. Or have they taken for worship (other) aliha (gods) besides Him? Say: “Bring your proof:” This (the Qur’an) is the Reminder for those with me and the Reminder for those before me. But most of them know not the Truth, so they are averse.  And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and no one else).” [Al-Anbiyaa. 21-25]

Allah [The Exalted] stated His disapproval of the polytheists – those who (worship things as) gods in the earth, even though these gods are absolutely incapacitated and powerless. Neither are they are able to bring them back to life nor resurrect them, and this is further explained by the statement of Allah:

وَاتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِهِ آلِهَةً لاَ يَخْلُقُونَ شَيْئًا وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ وَلاَ يَمْلِكُونَ ِلأَنفُسِهِمْ ضَرًّا وَلاَ نَفْعًا وَلاَ يَمْلِكُونَ مَوْتًا وَلاَ حَيَاةً وَلاَ نُشُورًا

Yet they have taken besides Him other aliha (gods) that created nothing but are themselves created, and possess neither hurt nor benefit for themselves, and possess no power (of causing) death, nor (of giving) life, nor of raising the dead. [Al-Furqan. 3]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

وَاتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ آلِهَةً لَعَلَّهُمْ يُنصَرُونَ
لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُمْ جُندٌ مُحْضَرُونَ

And they have taken besides Allah aliha (gods), hoping that they might be helped (by those so-called gods). They cannot help them, but they will be brought forward as a troop against those who worshipped them (at the time of Reckoning). [Ya Sin 74-75]

A polytheist worships a created thing that can neither benefit nor harm, and he abandons sincere worship to Allah – The One Who is Perfect [i.e. the only possessor of Perfect Names and Attributes; free from all weaknesses, shortcomings and imperfections], and in His Hand is the absolute control over all benefit and harm. This shows that a polytheist is not blessed, his ignorance is clearly established as well as the severity of his unjust behaviour towards Allah; for indeed it is only befitting that there is only one (true) deity, just as there cannot be except one (true) Lord. Because of this, Allah [The Exalted] said:

لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَا آلِهَةٌ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ لَفَسَدَتَا فَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah, then verily both [i.e. the heavens and the earth] would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above what they attribute to Him! [Al-Anbiya. 22]- Meaning: Both the heavens and the earth would have been ruined as well the creation in them.

The heavens and the earth – as one can see – are in a perfect state, intact and in perfect order. Neither is there any defect in them and obstacles (to its perfect order) nor conflict in its organisation. This shows that the One who controls and regulates its affairs is One- its Lord is one and the deity (under whose control they are maintained) is One.

If it were the case that the heavens and the earth have two (deities) that control and regulate its affairs- two lords or more, its perfect order would have been ruined and its foundations would have been undermined. This is because they would have been obstacles and opponents to one another: if one of them wishes to plan and administer something and the other one wishes that it should not take place, it would be impossible for both their wishes to be fulfilled. [On the other hand], the fulfilment of the wishes of one would have shown that the other one is weak and unable do whatever he wants; and it is impossible that both of them will agree on everything. Therefore, the wish of The Irresistible [i.e. Allah- the only True Lord and besides Him every other deity is false]- is what is fulfilled without anyone being able to prevent or repel it. This is why Allah [The Exalted] said:

مَا اتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ مِنْ وَلَدٍ وَمَا كَانَ مَعَهُ مِنْ إِلَهٍ إِذًا لَذَهَبَ كُلُّ إِلَهٍ بِمَا خَلَقَ وَلَعَلاَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

No son (or offspring or children) did Allah beget, nor is there any ilah (god) along with Him; (if there had been many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have tried to overcome others! Glorified be Allah above all that they attribute to Him! [Al-Muminoon. 91] [1]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلۡحَقُّ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ‌ۚ بَلۡ أَتَيۡنَـٰهُم بِذِڪۡرِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِهِم مُّعۡرِضُونَ

And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been ruined! Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder. [Al-Muminoon. 71]

And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been ruined! – Meaning, their desires are attached to wrongdoing, disbelief, and corruption that emanates from (evil) manners and deeds. Thus, if the truth had been in accordance to their desires, the heavens and the earth would have been ruined due to corrupt behaviour, and the management of its affairs based on wrong doing and inequity. This is because the heavens and the earth cannot be maintained in (upright) order except through truth and justice.

“Nay, We have brought them their reminder”.

Meaning, this Qur’an that reminds them of every good thing, in which there is self-esteem and honour for them if they act upon it, and will become leaders of humankind by way of that. (2)

“But they turn away from their reminder” – Meaning, they have turned away from that which will bring about nobility in this life and the next. (3)

We ask Allah:

“O Allah! I seek refuge in You lest I associate partners with You while I know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know”. [4]

Who among them knows Allah the most?!

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated:

There are those who know Allah as the one who is magnanimous, kind and bestows favours in abundance. There are those who know Him as the one who is forgiving, forbearing and expiates the sins of the servants. There are those who know Him as the possessor of perfect Strength and punishes the wrongdoers justly. There are those who know Him as the posssessor of Perfect, All-Encompassing Knowledge and Wisdom. There are those who know Him as the possessor of perfect Might and Magesty. There are those who know Him as one with perfect mercy, benignity and graciousness. There are those who know Him as the possessor of absolute dominion and that everything is subjugated to Him willingly and unwillingly. There is one who knows Allah as the one who responds to his supplication, relieves his anxiety and fulfil his need.

The ones- among these people – with the most comprehensive knowledge and awareness about Allah are those who know Him by His Speech (i.e. the Qur’an) because they know a Lord who possesses unlimited Perfect Attributes and Perfect Exalted Descriptions – free from every similarity, dificiency, weakness and fault; the possessor of every sublime Name and perfect Attribute; does what He wills (based on perfect knowledge, justice and wisdom); above everyone – (above His throne in a way that befits His Majesty and everything is under His absolute control); knows, hears and sees everything, able to do everything, everyone and everything defends on Him for their subsistence and survival, while He depends on none; gives commands and prohibitions, perfectly ordained all the religious affairs, and spoke about everything (He wants the servants to know regarding) the events that will take place in the universe – present, past and future- based on His perfect knowledge, Perfect Justice and Wisdom). He is greater than everything – (free from all similarities, dificiencies, imperfections, weaknesses and faults). He is the most Merciful of all those who show mercy and the most able to do what He wishes, the best and the only perfect judge (whose judgments are based on absolute certainty, perfect justice, knowledge and wisdom). The Qur’an was revealed so that His servants may know Him- know the path that leads to His Pleasure as well as the affair of those who follow this path that leads to His (Pleasure and reward in this life and the next).

Reflections from some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [38 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy..

Indeed diverting from the methodology of the prophets in Dawah is (tantamount) to deviation towards misguidance and destruction. This is because Allah, The Blessed and Most High, laid down and ordained this methodology for all the Prophets.

If the people have Shi’aaraat (i.e. distinguishing principles, doctrines, calls, slogans), we do not have except the Shi’aar (distinguishing principle, doctrine, call) of the Prophets.

If the people have methodologies, we do not have except the methodology of the Prophets, peace and blessings of Allah be upon them.

The Qur’an is the greatest testimony and Allah has often repeated these testimonies and reiterated them in many of the verses.

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (saying): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).” [An-Nahl: 36]

Every Messenger said this to his nation and appeared to his people with this call – the call to Tawheed–and to turn away from Taghut.

The Muslim’s perspective on the months of the Year

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّہُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثۡنَا عَشَرَ شَہۡرً۬ا فِى ڪِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوۡمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ

Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth. [at-Tawbah. 36]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Meaning, well-known months decreed by Allah; [يَوۡمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ – on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth]- Meaning, He established the alternation of its nights and days, decreed their time periods and divided them into these twelve months. (1)

Allah, The Exalted, said: [يَسْأَلونَكَ عَنِ الْأَهِلَّةِ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ – They ask you (O Muhammad) about the new moons. Say: These are signs to determine fixed time periods for humankind and for the time of the Hajj]. [Al-Baqarah. 189]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated:

Allah – by His Mercy and kindness – placed it in this manner where it alternates. The crescent appears weak at the beginning of the month, gradually increases by the middle of the month and then it decreases until the end of the month. This is how it is in order that people would know the time periods of their acts of worship, such as fasting, the times for the payment of Zakat, and the time of Hajj. And when it is the case that Hajj takes place during specific months that are well known and takes a long time, Allah stated: [وَالْحَجِّ – and for time of Hajj].

Furthermore, based on the the phases of the moon people become acquainted with the times for the payment of unpaid debts, rental time periods, the time period of Iddah (i.e. the time period a woman has to wait before remarrying again after divorce or after the death of a husband), the time period of pregnancy and other matters that are related to people’s needs. Therefore, Allah has made it a means determining time periods that is known to everyone-young and old, knowledgeable and ignorant. If time periods were determined by way of the solar calendar, none would be acquainted with it except a very few amongst the people. (2)

Ibn Umar, Allah be pleased with him and his father] reported Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stated, “The month is thus and thus and thus (i. e. pointing with his fingers thrice), and he held back his thumb at the third time (in order to show that it can also consist of twenty-nine days)”. [Sahih Muslim 1080]

Imam Muhammad Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked:

Some people say: “We do not use the Gregorian date before the Hijri date due to having loyalty (to other than Islam) and to aid (another religion), but rather the Gregorian date is more accurate than the Hijri calendar in terms of what they see”, and that “Most countries use this calendar.”

Response: Be patient, my brother! The crescent moon is the basis (for determining the monthly time periods) for all human beings. Read the statement of Allah, The Exalted:

[ يَسْأَلونَكَ عَنِ الْأَهِلَّةِ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ – They ask you (O Muhammad) about the new moons. Say: These are signs to determine fixed time periods for humankind and for the time of the Hajj]- Meaning, for all people.

And read the statement of Allah, The Exalted:
إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْراً فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ

Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year),  so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred…] [at-Tawbah. 36]

Therefore, it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred, (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). The months are determined by the crescent moon and this is why the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, explained that the four (sacred ones among the 12) are Rajab Dhul Qidah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram, and this is the basis of the matter. The months used by the people at present – months determined based on conjecture- are not established on a (sound) basis. If they were based on the sighting of the Buruj (a great number of distant big stars), their basis would have been based on the Buruj which is clear in the sky, well known and their times are known, however, they (i.e. the non-Islamic months)are based on conjecture and do not have a basis at all due to the fact that some are twenty-eight days and some of them thirty-one.

However, if we find ourselves in difficult circumstances and it becomes necessary to mention the Gregorian date, why do we have to alternate from the Arabic Hijri date – the one based on the Shariah – to this date that is based on conjecture and has no foundation?! We are very able to use the Arabic date and then say, “Corresponding to such and such date (i.e. in the Gregorian date)” given that when many Islamic countries were colonised by the unbelievers, they changed the date to their own- enslaving and humiliating the society. You understand, so we say, if we find ourselves in difficult circumstances and it becomes necessary to mention the Gregorian date, let it be first that the Arabic Hijri date – the one based on the Shariah – is mentioned, then we say, “Corresponding to such and such”. (3)
Origin of The New Years Events, Festivals, Celebrations

Shaikh Abu Khadeejah, may Allah preserve him, stated:

The earliest known record of a New Year festival dates from about 2000 BCE in Mesopotamia, where in Babylonia the new year (Akitu) began with the new moon after the spring equinox (mid-March) and in Assyria with the new moon nearest the autumn equinox (mid-September). For the Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians the year began with the autumn equinox (September 21), and for the early Greeks it began with the winter solstice (December 21). On the Roman republican calendar the year began on March 1, but after 153 BCE the official date was January 1, which was continued in the Julian calendar of 46 BCE. In early medieval times most of Christian Europe regarded March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation, as the beginning of the new year, although New Year’s Day was observed on December 25 in Anglo-Saxon England. William the Conqueror decreed that the year begin on January 1, but England later joined the rest of Christendom and adopted March 25. The Gregorian calendar, adopted in 1582 by the Roman Catholic Church, restored January 1 as New Year’s Day, and most European countries gradually followed suit: Scotland, in 1660; Germany and Denmark, about 1700; England, in 1752; and Russia, in 1918. (4)

Congratulations During The New Year

When we enquired about some proof regarding the new year few years ago, Shaikh Abu Khadeejah, may Allah preserve him, forwarded us a Fatwa of Imam Muhammad Ibn Saalih Al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, as follows: Shaikh Ibn Uthaimīn was asked, “What is the ruling on congratulating non-Muslims during their Christmas celebrations? How are we to respond to them if they congratulate us with Merry Christmas?” So he answered, “Congratulating the non-Muslims during their Christmas celebrations or other religious celebrations is forbidden by a consensus cited by Ibn Al-Qayyim in his book, Ahkām Ahlidh-Dhimmah…* If they congratulate us during their celebrations, we do not respond to that, because it is not our celebration and it is a celebration that Allah is not pleased with. That is because either it is a celebration that they have innovated into their religion or it is one that is legislated in their religion but was abrogated with the advent of the religion of Islam which the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was sent with to the whole of mankind. It was regarding this that Allah said, “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter, he will be one of the losers.” (Āli ‘Imrān 3:85) Therefore, to accept an invitation from them at Christmas is forbidden because to participate with them (in a Christmas meal) is even more severe than congratulating them.” (Majmū’ Fatāwā 3/45-46, abridged)

The Majority Are Not a Proof of Right or Wrong, So Do Not Blindly Those Who Celebrate or Offer Congratulations That Are Not Allowed In The Shariah – Whether In a Muslim Country or Non-Muslim Country

Imam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Let every Muslim be careful of being deceived by the great numbers [of people upon such and such idea, view, belief, way of life etc], whilst saying: ‘’Indeed, the people have become such and such, and have become accustomed to such and such, so I am with them’’. This is a great calamity, for indeed many people of the past were destroyed due to this [i.e. blindly following the majority]. Therefore, O sensible one! It is obligated on you to examine yourself; take account of yourself and adhere to the truth, even if the people abandon it. Beware of what Allah has forbidden, even if the people do it, for indeed the truth is more worthy of being followed, just as Allah [The Most High] said: [وَإِنْ تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّه ِ -And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah’s Path. [Surah Al An’am Ayah 116]

And Allah [The Most High] said: [ وَمَآ أَڪۡثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوۡ حَرَصۡتَ بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ-And most of mankind will not believe even if you desire it eagerly] [Surah Yusuf Ayah 103]. (5)

Al-Allaamah Muqbil Bin Hadi Al-Wadi’ee may Allah have mercy upon him] said:

If numbers is the scale by way of which you judge, then the majority are mostly blameworthy; and if persuasive speech and eloquence is the scale by way of which you judge, then indeed Allah described the Munaafiqoon that they have tongues that utter beautiful speech. Allaah said: [وَإِن يَقُولُواْ تَسۡمَعۡ لِقَوۡلِهِمۡ – And when they speak, you listen to their words]. [Surah Al-Munaafiqoon. Aayah 4]

Therefore, what is given consideration is that one knows the people of truth by their characteristics – that they call to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family and companions], and they neither desire reward from the people nor seeking to be thanked. All praise and thanks be to Allah, all the above does not negate peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims. Must read articles below:
