The Self-amazed One Will Not Be Successful!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Mutarrif Bin Abdillaah Ash Shikh-kheer [rahimahullaah] said, “It is more beloved to me that I sleep all night [i.e. without performing the optional night prayer] and wake up in the morning whilst being regretful than stay up all night in prayer and then become self-amazed”. [Ref 1]

Imaam Adh-Dhahabi [rahimahullaah] commented on this statement and said, “The one who attributes piety to himself or is amazed with himself will not be successful”. [Ref 2]

[As-Siyar 4/190]

Excerpts From An Advice of Shaikh Abdullaah Al-Bukhaari Regarding Fear of Allaah, Good Manners And Good Dealings]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Andullaah Al-Bukhaari [hafidhahullaah] was asked to give advice to those who are returning to their countries – especially non-Muslim countries – during summer vocations, so the Shaikh stated:

Firstly, everyone should fear Allaah and fulfil servitude to Allaah, whether one is living in the Muslim land or not. Wherever one is, he should be a slave of Allaah. Allaah said: [يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلاَ تَمُوتُنَّ إِلاَّ وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ – O you who believe! Fear Allah (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. [Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always], and die not except in a state of Islam (as Muslims) with complete submission to Allah]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 102]

Fulfil that which Allaah has commanded and keep away from that which Allaah has forbidden…. Be a good example for others – those in your house, city district etc. Do not just speak, rather be what you say in reality. Be upon the Sunnah and manners of the Messenger…. Be a man who is Saaleh [righteous] and Muslih [a person who follows the paths of sound rectification] – in yourself and for others; adhere to knowledge and call to it with your manners and deeds…look at when rain falls down, it benefits and thus brings forth every kind of lovely growth (plants).

Be a student of knowledge- benefiting others, being Mubaarak wherever you may be, meaning benefitting others, teaching people good. This is what a student should be whether he returns to his land during summer or other than that; whether in his land or other than it; must be a student upon lofty manners – well-mannered in his relationship with Allaah- whether in private or public, and good mannered with the people; exalting the Sunnah and following it; teaching the people good…this is what we advise you and advise ourselves…

A person should not be the reason behind people’s rejection of the truth, either due to bad manners or an evil he commits openly, so be careful! Some people may come with an affair which one cannot declare Haraam or Makrooh, however it is deemed ugly or repugnant by people who possess upright souls and sound natural disposition.

My sons, Allaah bore witness for the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], saying:

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ

And verily, you (O Muhammad) are on an exalted standard of character.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to have good manners. Ibn Seereen [rahimahullaah] said, “We used to learn upright guidance [or good etiquettes, manners] just as we used to seek knowledge”.

Read the biographies of the scholars, the virtuous people and the khulafaa, for they used to go to the possessors of good etiquettes [or manners] to teach them good etiquettes etc. And due to the greatness and importance of this subject matter, the Imaams of Islaam authored books on this subject matter.

My sons, do not be a reason behind the people’s rejection of the truth, for this is something that occurs. Your seeking knowledge should get you closer to the people and not distance you from them; and none humbles himself to Allaah except that Allaah raises him as the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] stated.. Be careful, humility is a great affair related to manners.

Complaints have been made regarding some students – that they look down on the common people. Why this behaviour?! Why this lack of humility?! A student of knowledge should have noble manners by way of his actions before his statements. Why are you not humble? You contradict the guidance of the Messenger [in this affair of good manners]: [لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ – Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow]. [surah Al-Ahzaab. Aayah 21]

It is incumbent upon you to know the meaning of Ittibaa – adherence to the Sunnah of the Messenger, the Prophet’s statements and deeds in all his affairs. The most comprehensive definition of the Sunnah is that which has been narrated with authentic chains of transmission regarding his statements, deeds, tacit approvals and characteristics etc Why do you not be like this?!

Also know that there might be infiltrators within the ranks of Taa’ifatul Mansoorah [the victorious group] and Firqatun Naaji’yah [The Saved Sect] in general, and I don’t mean specific individuals…therefore be upon  clarity and do not accompany everyone…

The Sunnah Is Upright Path In The Midst of Those Who Exaggerate And Those Who Are Negligent – [By Imaam al-Hasan Al-Basri]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Hasan Al-Basri [rahimahullaah] said:

The Sunnah -by the One besides whom there is none worthy of worship except Him  (i.e. Allaah)- is between the one who exceed the limits and the one who falls short, so be patient upon it-may Allaah have mercy upon you; for indeed Ahlus Sunnah were the fewest people in the past and shall be the fewest people (from those to) come- [الّذين لم يذهبوا مع أهل الإتراف في إترافهم -those who did not go with the people of transgression and corruption in their transgression and corruption;  [ولا مع أهل البدع في بدعهم -nor with the people of Bidah in their Bidah]; rather they (exercised) patience upon the Sunnah until they met their Lord (i.e. passed away). Likewise-InShaaAllaah- you be (the same). [Source: Ighaatha Al-Lahfaan 1/70]

Everyone of Us Will Come to Allaah Alone On The Day of Resurrection!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

إِن كُلُّ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِلَّا آتِي الرَّحْمَٰنِ عَبْدًا

لَّقَدْ أَحْصَاهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا

وَكُلُّهُمْ آتِيهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَرْدًا

There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto the Most Beneficent (Allah) as a slave. Verily, He knows each one of them, and has counted them a full counting. And everyone of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection. [19:93-95]

[وَكُلُّهُمْ آتِيهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَرْدًا – And everyone of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection]; without children, wealth and helpers – nothing with him [i.e. the person –male and female] except his (or her) deeds, so Allaah will recompense him (or her) and give him (her) a full account. And if [his or her deeds are] good, [he or she receives) good, and if [his or her deeds are] evil, [he or she receives] evil, just as Allaah (The Most High) said: [وَلَقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا فُرَادَىٰ كَمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ  – And truly you have come unto Us alone (without wealth, companions or anything else) as We created you the first time. [6:94] [Ref 1]

What Are Righteous Deeds

Imaam Shanqeetee [rahimahullaah) said: Indeed, the great Qur’aan has clarified that a righteous deed is that which accomplishes three affairs, and when one of them is not present its performer will not be benefitted on the day of Judgement.

The first affair: The (deed) has to be accordance with what the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi wasallam) was sent with. That is because Allaah (The Most High) stated: [ وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا – And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it)]. [Soorah Al-Hashar: Ayah: 7]

Allaah (The Most High) said: [مَّن يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ – He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad), has indeed obeyed Allah]. [Nisaa: Ayah: 80]

Allaah (The Most High) said: [ قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي – Say (O Muhammad to mankind): ‘If you (really) love Allah then follow me].’[Aal Imraan: Ayah: 31]

Allaah (The Most High) said: [أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُوا لَهُم مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَن بِهِ اللَّهُ – Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed. [Soorah Ash-Shooraa: Ayah: 21]

The second affair: The (deed) is to be carried out sincerely for the sake of Allaah. That is because Allaah (The Most high) stated:  [وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ – And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him)]. [Soorah Al-Bayyinah: Ayah: 5]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

Say (O Muhammad): ‘Verily, I am commanded to worship Allah (Alone) by obeying Him and doing religious deeds sincerely for Allah’s sake only and not to show off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship; “And I am commanded (this) in order that I may be the first of those who submit themselves to Allah (in Islam) as Muslims.” Say (O Muhammad): “Verily, if I disobey my Lord, I am afraid of the torment of a great Day.” Say (O Muhammad) “Allah Alone I worship by doing religious deeds sincerely for His sake only and not to show-off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship.” [Soorah Az-Zumar: Ayah: 11-14]

The third affair: The (deed) has to be founded upon a sound creed.   Allaah (The Most High) said: [وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ الصَّالِحَاتِ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ – And he who works deeds of righteousness, while he is a believer (in Islamic Monotheism)]. Therefore, Allaah, (tied) the (deed of the doer and the condition of its acceptance), saying:  ‘’While he (i.e. performer) is a believer’’.[Soorah Taahaa: Ayah: 112]

And (The Most High) stated regarding the deeds of those who [have no belief in Allaah and His Messenger (sallal-lal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)]:

وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَّنثُورًا

And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust.’’ [Soorah Al-Furqaan: Ayah: 23]

And Allaah (The Most High) said: [أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا النَّارُ ۖ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُوا فِيهَا وَبَاطِلٌ مَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ – They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but Fire; and vain are the deeds they did therein. And of no effect is that which they used to do. [Soorah HUD: Ayah: 16]. And other than it from the Aayaat (of the Qur’aan) [2]

The One Whose Knowledge And Status Leads Him to Haughtiness – [By Imaam Adh’Dhahabi]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Dhahabi [rahimahullaah] said: The most evil [type] of haughtiness [i.e. the haughtiness lesser than the one that led Iblees to disbelief] is that of one who is haughty towards the people due to knowledge [he possesses] and feels exalted within himself due to virtue [he possesses]; for indeed this [type of person] is not benefited by his knowledge. Indeed, the one who seeks knowledge for the afterlife [i.e. to perform righteous deeds for the afterlife], his knowledge will prevent him [i.e. restrain him from evil, unpraiseworthy deeds etc], his heart will possess khash’ya [i.e. that fear of Allaah founded upon knowledge of the greatness of Allaah, His perfect Dominion and sovereignty], his soul will be at ease and he will be watchful over himself. [Al-Kabaa’ir page 76]

Indeed Allaah is Pure and He does Not Accept, Except That Which is Pure

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Messenger of Allaah [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, “Indeed Allaah is Pure and He does not accept, except that which is pure”.

In this hadith, he [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] described Allaah [جل وعلا] that He [سبحانه] is Pure.  He [سبحانه] is Pure, meaning free from all imperfections and deficiencies.  He is Pure in His Essence, in His Names and Attributes, and in His Commandments and Prohibitions.  He [سبحانه] is Pure in every aspect and imperfection cannot reach Him; and for that reason He does not accept actions, statements and intentions except that which is pure.  He does not accept filthy statements, actions and intentions. He does not accept except the pure, as He [The Exalted] said: [إِلَيۡهِ يَصۡعَدُ ٱلۡكَلِمُ ٱلطَّيِّبُ – ‘To Him ascend (all) the goodly words][Surah Faatir Ayah:10]

He [سبحانه] does not accept, except good speech and good actions; as for filthy speech, then indeed Allaah rejects and hates it, such as lies, backbiting, tale carrying, abuse, false speech and false testimony; and all filthy statements; [such as] shirk and kufr.  All of this is filthy speech and does not ascend to Allaah, and is not accepted.

The Fear of Abdullah Bin Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy.

A man said to Abdullaah Bin Mas’ood [may Allah be pleased with him], “I do not want to be amongst the companions of the right, I want to be amongst those foremost in faith; so, Abdullaah Bin Mas’ood said to him, ‘But there is a man right here [meaning himself] who wishes that he is not resurrected after he dies [i.e. due to fear of the hereafter]’”.

One day, he [Abdullaah] came out and the people followed him, so he said to them, “Do you have a need?” They said, “No, but we want to walk along with you.” He said, “Go back, for indeed it is humiliation for the one following and a trial for the one followed”.

He said, “Had you known what I know about myself, you would have hurried to cover my head with dust”.

Supplicate For Your Brother to Be Blessed Instead of Wishing That He Loses The Blessing He is Given!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [hafidhahullaah] said:

Supplicate for your brother to be blessed. Supplicate for him to be blessed instead of wishing that the blessing he is given should cease to exist. Supplicate for him that the blessing he is given should remain and that Allaah blesses him with it. This [supplication of yours for your brother] will not harm you, rather it something through which Allaah will benefit you. Envy is cured with the likes of these deeds.

Also that which will cure the disease of envy is that you seek after provision and employ the means of earning a livelihood. As for sitting (about idly) and being lazy, whilst envying those who earn through seeking after provision – envying them for that which Allaah has bestowed on them of His bounties- then you are to be blamed. You are the one who has fallen short; you are the one who has abandoned the means to earning a livelihood and the one with a self-inflicted laziness; therefore you should blame yourself, let alone envy people for what Allaah has given them of His bounties.

Envy can lead to disbelief just as it led Iblees to disbelief; it can lead to committing murder just as it led Haabil to murder his brother Qaabil. Allaah narrated this story to us in order that we may ponder upon it; take warning from it and be warned against envy.

Envy can lead a person to oppose Allaah [Glorified and Exalted Be He]- opposing His Divine Will and Decree – that Allaah is not All-Wise,  Fully-Aware and All-Knowing because he gave someone who is not worthy to be given or punishes someone who is not worthy to be punished. This (belief) is tantamount to disbelief in Allaah’s Divine Will and Decree. Envy is a harmful disease, so seek Allaah’s Refuge against envy. In a hadeeth transmitted by Imaam Ahmad and Imaam Tirmidhee, it is stated: “Envy consumes good deeds just as fire burns wood’’. Therefore, be warned lest your rewards and righteous deeds are consumed due to envy. Seek Allaah’s Refuge against envy and ask Allaah to give you from His bounties; love good for your brothers and supplicate for them to be blessed. All the bounty is in the Hand of Allah; He grants to whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, the All-Knower. Therefore, do not oppose Allaah and thus your deeds are nullified whilst you are unaware of that. [Paraphrased: Listen to audio here:

Skin Without Flesh and Body Without Soul!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said: [ لَن يَنَالَ اللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا وَلَٰكِن يَنَالُهُ التَّقْوَىٰ مِنكُمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ سَخَّرَهَا لَكُمْ لِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَاكُمْ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُحْسِنِينَ – It is neither their meat nor their blood [i.e. the animals we sacrifice] that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him. Thus have We made them subject to you that you may magnify Allah for His Guidance to you. And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) to the Muhsinun (doers of good)]. [Surah Al-Hajj. Ayah 37]

[لَن يَنَالَ اللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا – It is neither their meat nor their blood] – meaning: The aim [or goal] behind them [i.e. the animals slaughtered as sacrifice] is not just to merely slaughter them, for neither does their meat nor blood reach Allaah because Allaah is [الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيدُ -The Independent One Who is Free of all Needs and The One Who is Deservedly Praised]; rather what reaches Allaah is the sincerity [in your hearts in relation to the performance of the deed]; hope for Allaah’s reward and having a righteous intention; [وَلَٰكِن يَنَالُهُ التَّقْوَىٰ مِنكُمْ ۚ – But it is piety from you that reaches Him].

So with regards to this, there is an urge towards sincerity in [the act] of sacrifice and that one’s intention is to seek the Face of Allaah [alone], and not out of boasting, show off and to be heard; nor merely following a custom. Likewise, this is [the goal behind] all acts of worship, for if they are not connected to sincerity and piety, then they are similar to skins that have no flesh and a body that has no soul.

Dreamt That I Was Having Sexual Intercourse In my Sleep! What Should I Do?

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Question:

What is incumbent on a woman to do if she has a dream in her sleep that she’s having sexual intercourse with a man?

Answer:

If a man dreams in his sleep that he is having sexual intercourse with a woman, or if a woman dreams in her sleep that a man is having sexual intercourse with her, then there is no blame [i.e. sin] on them because accountability is removed from them in a state of sleep and due to their inability to prevent that. Allaah [The Most High] does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: “The pen (i.e. accountability) is lifted from three (people): The sleeping person until he (or she) wakes up; the insane person until he (or she) returns to sanity and the child until he (or she) reaches the age of puberty”. (1) The one who sees such a dream should make Ghusl if he (or she) saw a discharge (i.e. sexual discharge). (2)
