Hadeeth: [The Most Virtuous Hijrah Is to Abandon That Which Allaah Hates] With Short Commentary By Shaikh Zaid Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

“The most virtuous Hijrah [migration] is to abandon that which Allaah hates”.

This hadeeth contains a clarification regarding one of the meanings of Hijrah [migration] and its virtue in relation to this meaning. Indeed, it [Hijrah – migration] has been explained [in the hadeeth] by the statement of the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi Wasallam] that “The most virtuous migration is to abandon that which Allaah hates”. The Lord [i.e. Allaah – The Lord of all that exits]  hates all types sins – be it related to statements and deeds, manifest and hidden, small and big. Allaah hates all of them and [threatens to] punish [the one commits them], because they are forbidden, just as Allaah hates deficiencies [i.e. in that which a person has been commanded] in the absence of a legislated excuse. Therefore, it is obligatory to hate what the Lord [Allaah] hates and to love that which He loves for His slaves, for indeed in that there is abundant good in this life, in the grave and in the hereafter. Ahlus Sunnah Hate Those Who Initiate or Innovate Into The Religion That Which Is Not From It – [By Imaam As-Saabooni (rahimahullaah)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [may Allaah preserve him] quoted Imaam As-Saabooni [rahimahullaah] who stated, “And they [i.e. Ahlul Hadeeth] hated Ahlul-Bid’ah – those who initiated into the religion what is not from it. They neither loved them nor keep company with them. They neither listened to their speech nor sit with them. They neither argued with them about the religion nor debated with them’’. Then Shaikh Rabee said: How is this [the case]? Is this [view introduced] from themselves or guidance from Allaah and His Messenger, and that which the Salafus Saaleh were upon? Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He] warned against Ahlul Bidah and clarified for us that they are people of desires, and that they follow Mutashaabihaat [i.e. texts that are not entirely clear in what they indicate, so they are referred back to other texts to be explained] and they abandon the Muhkamaat [i.e. texts that are very clear]. Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa] said: The Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] recited this ayah:

It is He Who has sent down to you [Muhammad] the Book [this Qur’an]. In it are Verses that are (entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book [and those are the Verses of Al-Ahkaam (commandments, etc.), Al-Faraa’id (obligatory duties) and Al-Hudood (legal laws for the punishment of thieves, adulterers, etc.)]; and others are Mutashaabihaat (i.e. not entirely clear in what they indicate, so they are to be referred back to the Muhkamaat to be explained]. So, as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials, etc.), and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings except Allaah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: ‘’We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord.” And none receive admonition except men of understanding.’’ [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 7]  [Then] she [i.e. Aa’isha] said: The Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, ‘’If you see those who follow thereof that is not entirely clear, then they are those whom Allah has named [as having deviation (from the truth)] so beware of them’’. [Bukhaari Number 4547]

Allaah clarified that they [i.e. ahlul bidah] have desires [i.e. evil desires] and deviation with them, and that they intend to misguide themselves and other people! They desire trials and intend to misguide the people, and that is why the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] mentioned them and described their condition to us. He [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, ‘’And indeed there will appear a people out of my Ummah in whom desires will run through them just as rabies runs through a dog.’’ [Read here: https://salafidawahmanchester.com/2019/08/there-will-appear-a-people-in-this-ummah-in-whom-desires-will-run-through-them-just-as-rabies-runs-through-a-dog/ ]

Ahlul Sunnah – no doubt – hate Ahlul bidah and Imaam [As Saabooni] mentioned a number of them [i.e. senior scholars of ahlul hadeeth] that they are all agreed upon hating [Ahlul bidah]. However, amongst them [i.e Ahlul bidah] there are du’aat [callers to their bidah]- they are neither to be sat with nor debated with, except in cases of necessity and for a Maslahah [i.e. a carefully assessed benefit identified by rightly guided scholars amongst the scholars]; [otherwise], it is not permissible to enter into debate with them. It is not permissible to enter into a specific debate with the rawaafid if you are weak [i.e. in knowledge and character], except if one is a man who is firmly grounded in knowledge and religion, [very proficient in] establishing evidences, clever and a possessor of [that force and strength that enables him to easily excel in debate with the clear proofs without being affected by doubts]; so if he sees a benefit in debating them, he debates them. [Allaah (The Most High) said]: [وَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ  – and argue with them in a way that is better]. This is the legislated debate. Allaah did not close the door of debate completely, so if we have a way of establishing the proofs and to guide the people to good, we follow it. The one who is debated with may not benefit but others may benefit.

As for the weak one, then no [i.e. he does not engage in debate]. Even amongst the scholars there is one who is weak and one who is led to be mistaken by Shub’hah [i.e. a statement or affair that resembles the truth but is falsehood in reality]. He may be a scholar but his character is weak, so he becomes weak in the presence of Ahlul bidah, even if they are younger than him and lesser in knowledge! Indeed, it has happened to many of those who ascribe to the Sunnah and Hadeeth [ i.e. fell into some deviation or error] due to their weakness and opposition to the methodology of the Salaf. For example: Al Bayhaqqi was from the seniors of Ahlul hadeeth and their scholars, and was deceived by some of the Ashaa’irah such as Ibn Fawrak and his ilk, so he fell into Ash’ariyyah! How many among the youth- in this era – have been ruined at the hands of Ahlul bidah?! How many youth, middle age men and graduates from universities have been deceived by Ahlul bidah, and thus they fall into their arms?! They are deceived by the parties [of illegal partisanship] and thus fall into their arms! Why is this? Because they did not act upon the statement of the Messenger: “If you see those who follow thereof that is not entirely clear, then they are those whom Allah has named [as having deviation (from the truth)] so beware of them”. The strong one calls Ahlul bidah; he calls the Christians. There has to be dawah in the path of Allaah and there has to be strong scholars who disseminate the religion of Allaah; and when necessary, they debate so that the proofs are established and benefit one who is to benefit. [Source: An Excerpt from ‘Sharh Aqeedah As-Salaf Ashaab Al-Hadeeth’ pages 301-304′. slightly paraphrased]

The Virtue of Remembering Allaah And Asking For Forgiveness After Falling Into Sin

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And those who, when they have committed Faahisha [illegal sexual intercourse etc.] or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allaah and ask forgiveness for their sins; – and none can forgive sins but Allah – and do not persist in what they have done, while they know. [Soorah Aal Imraan’ Aayah 135]

[وَٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُواْ فَـٰحِشَةً أَوۡ ظَلَمُوٓاْ أَنفُسَہُمۡ ذَكَرُواْ ٱللَّهَ فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرُواْ لِذُنُوبِهِمۡ – And those who, when they have committed Faahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins]- Meaning: When they commit sins, they return to Allaah in repentance and seek His protection from the evil consequences that might reach them in future due to their evil deeds and seek forgiveness for the evil deeds which they have already committed. [وَلَمۡ يُصِرُّواْ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلُواْ وَهُمۡ يَعۡلَمُونَ – And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know]- Meaning: They repent from their sin, turn to Allaah in repentance soon afterwards, refrain from persisting upon disobedience and they know that Allaah forgives whoever repents.

For such, the reward is Forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allah’s Orders). [Ref 1] And they know that persisting upon sin is harmful and abandoning it is a foremost obligation. [Ref 2]

When they commit evil deeds -be it major or minor- they hasten towards repentance, seek forgiveness, remember their Lord, the promise given to the disobedient ones and the promise given to those who fear Him, so they ask for forgiveness, ask Allaah to hide their faults, stop committing the sins and are regretful. And due to this, Allaah said about them: [ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ جَزَآؤُهُم مَّغۡفِرَةٌ۬ مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡ وَجَنَّـٰتٌ۬ تَجۡرِى مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡہَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيہَا‌ۚ وَنِعۡمَ أَجۡرُ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلِينَ – For such, the reward is Forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allah’s Orders)]. [Ref 3]

Those Who Commit The Evil Act of Concealment, But Then They Repent, Do Righteous Deeds And Openly Declare What They Concealed

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Verily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allah and cursed by the cursers. Except those who repent and do righteous deeds, and openly declare [the truth which they concealed]. These, I will accept their repentance. And I am the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayaat 159-160]

Abu Saaleh reported from Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu anhumaa] who said: This Aayah was revealed regarding the leaders of the Yahood, [who] concealed the Bayyinaat and the Hudaa, which Allaah revealed in the Tawraat. The Bayyinaat are the [rulings] regarding what is lawful and unlawful, the prescribed punishments and the obligatory [acts, duties]. And Hudaa [in this Aayah] is the description of the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and his characteristics.  [أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ يَلۡعَنُہُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَيَلۡعَنُہُمُ ٱللَّـٰعِنُون- they (i.e. those who conceal the proofs) are the ones cursed by Allah and cursed by the cursers]. [إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ تَابُواْ وَأَصۡلَحُواْ وَبَيَّنُواْ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ أَتُوبُ عَلَيۡہِمۡ‌ۚ وَأَنَا ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ – Except those who repent and do righteous deeds, and openly declare (the truth which they concealed). These, I will accept their repentance. And I am the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful]- Meaning: Ibn Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu] said: Except those Yahood who repent, rectify their deeds and make known the characteristics of Allaah’s Messengers which are mentioned in their book. [Ref 4]

At-Tawbatun Nusooh- Sincere Repentance

Allaah [The Most High] said:

O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will remit from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow [Paradise] the Day that Allah will not disgrace the Prophet [Muhammad] and those who believe with him, their Light will run forward before them and with [their Records Books of deeds] in their right hands they will say: ‘’Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us [and do not put it off till we cross over the Siraat (a slippery bridge over the Hell) safely] and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things.’’

Turn to Allah with sincere repentance]- Meaning: Umar Ibn Khattaab [radiyallaahu anhu] said: ‘’At-tawbatun Nosooh [sincere repentance] is that a person repents from sins and reminds himself not to return to sinning. Al-Hasan Al-Basri [rahimahullaah] was asked about At-tawbatun Nusooh [sincere repentance], so he said: ‘’It is regret [felt in] the heart, asking for forgiveness with the tongue, the limbs refrain from sinning and being careful of returning to sinning. Ibn Mas’ood [radiyallaahu-anhu] said: ‘’At-tawbatun Nusooh [sincere repentance] expiates every evil deed’’, then he recited the Aayah the Aayah [i.e. Aayah 8 Surah At-Tahreem] [Ref 5]

Shaqeeq Al-Balkhiy (rahimahullaah) said: ‘’The signs of repentance are: Weeping over what has preceded [of sins]; fear of falling into sin; keeping way from evil companions and accompanying the good people. [Ref 6]

The Hypocrites Will Be In The Depths of The Fire, Unless They Repent Before Death

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Verily, the hyprocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire and no helper will you find for them; except those who repent, act righteously, hold fast to Allaah and purify their religion for the sake of Allaah, then they will be with the believers. And Allah will grant to the believers a great reward. Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked [Him] and have believed in Him. And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative [of good], All-Knowing. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayaat 145-147]

[إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ تَابُواْ  – Except those who repent]- Meaning: Except those who repent from hypocrisy; [وَأَصۡلَحُواْ  – and act righteously]- Meaning: Rectify their deeds after repenting;  [وَٱعۡتَصَمُواْ – hold fast to Allaah]- Meaning: Adhere to the religion ordained by Allaah; [وَأَخۡلَصُواْ دِينَهُمۡ لِلَّهِ- and purify their religion for the sake of Allaah]- Meaning: The religion of Islaam- sincerely adhere to it and keep away from shirk; act sincerely and removed from the filthy [acts and beliefs that are tantamount to] Nifaaq [hypocrisy] and Riyaa [showing off]. [فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ مَعَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ‌ۖ وَسَوۡفَ يُؤۡتِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ أَجۡرًا عَظِيمً۬ا – then they will be with the believers. And Allah will grant to the believers a great reward].

[مَّا يَفۡعَلُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابِڪُمۡ إِن شَكَرۡتُمۡ وَءَامَنتُمۡ‌ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ شَاڪِرًا عَلِيمً۬ا – Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and have believed in Him. And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative (of good), All-Knowing]. [Ref 7]

Hadeeth: [Verily, Allaah Will Give Respite to The Oppressor Until When He Seizes him]- With Short Commentary By Shaikh Zayd [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Abu Moosaa [radiyallaahu-anhu] said, “Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, ‘Verily, Allaah will give respite to the oppressor until when He seizes him and he cannot escape’”. Then he [i.e. the Messenger] recited the Aayah: [وَكَذَٲلِكَ أَخۡذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَآ أَخَذَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَهِىَ ظَـٰلِمَةٌ‌ۚ إِنَّ أَخۡذَهُ ۥۤ أَلِيمٌ۬ شَدِيدٌ – Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the (population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful, and severe]. [Surah Hud. Aayah 102]

Brief Reminder From This Hadeeth By Shaikh Zayd Bin Haadi [rahimahullaah]

There is a warning against oppression in this lofty hadeeth- oppression against oneself through different levels and types of sins. The one whom Allaah has given wealth, good health, safety and stability whilst he persists upon sin, then this is Allaah plan in stages against this sinner because he deserves it- وَلَا يَظۡلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَدً۬ا – And your Lord treats no one with injustice. (Surah Al-Kahf. Aayah 49]

There’s a warning – in this hadeeth – against  oppressing others, because the one who oppresses others is called an oppressor and the one who oppresses himself through sins is called an oppressor. Therefore, [both] the one who oppresses himself and the one who oppresses others are [exposed] to great danger in this life, in the grave and in the afterlife. If Allaah gives him respite and does not hasten punishment against him, then indeed Allaah reserves for him the punishment he deserves due to the statement of Allaah: [وَكَذَٲلِكَ أَخۡذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَآ أَخَذَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَهِىَ ظَـٰلِمَةٌ‌ۚ إِنَّ أَخۡذَهُ ۥۤ أَلِيمٌ۬ شَدِيدٌ – Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the (population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful, and severe]. This is how the hadeeth is in agreement with the noble Aayah – that if Allaah gives respite to an oppressor, then it is not that Allaah has neglected his affair; and if Allaah delays punishment against him in the worldly life, then indeed Allaah multiplies it for him in the hereafter, so that he is recompensed based on what he did and the evil deeds he committed. Allaah is a possessor of [perfect] Wisdom, because He recompenses a doer based on his deed- good recompense for good deeds and evil recompense for evil deeds. [At-taleeqaatul Maleehah Alaa Silsilah Al-Ahaadeeth As-Saheehah. Hadeeth Regarding Two Traits of Al-Jaahiliyyah- [Wailing For The Dead And Reviling Lineages] – With Short Commentary By Shaikh Zayd [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Abu Hurairah [radiyallaahu-anhu] said, “The Prophet [sallal laahu -alayhi wasallam] said, ‘There are two matters of Al-Jaahiliyyah [i.e. traits of pre-Islamic ignorance] and the people will never abandon them: wailing for the dead and reviling people’s lineages”.

In this hadeeth, there is a clear warning against falling into these two affairs, because they are from the deeds of Al-Jaahiliyyah [pre-Islamic ignorance]. The deeds of Al-Jaahiliyyah in most cases are evil because they are based on ignorance, a result of ignorance and emanate from ignorance. The best of all deeds are those that are from the Islamic legislation. Therefore, these two traits are from the deeds of the people Al-Jaahiliyyah, but it is not committed by all the people, rather some people will not leave them until the day of Judgement.

The first trait is wailing for the dead by raising one’s voice, an increased mention of [the dead person’s virtues], boasting, tearing one’s clothing and slapping one’s cheeks. All these are deeds of Al-Jaahiliyyah.

The second trait is reviling lineages by boasting about one’s lineage and reviling other people’s lineages, and this does not occur except due to pride and looking down on others. It is not from the traits of the people of Eemaan; rather humility is the trait of the people of Eemaan- being easy going, refraining from self-praise, [refraining] from reviling people’s lineages and [refraining from] boasting about one’s lineage. Indeed, Allaah said: [إِنَّ أَڪۡرَمَكُمۡ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتۡقَٮٰكُمۡ‌ۚ – Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has more Taqwa]. [Sural Al-Hujuraat. Aayah 13]

The Sensible Person Must Cling to Humility – By Imaam Ibn Hibbaan [rahimahullaah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibn Hibbaan [rahimahullaah] said: It is obligated on a sensible person that he adheres to humility and avoids pride.  Humility is of two types- the first one is praiseworthy and the other is blameworthy. Praiseworthy humility [necessitates] abandoning insolence and mockery. Blameworthy humility [occurs] when a person humbles himself in the presence of one who possesses the things of the worldly life and desiring what such a person possesses. Therefore, a sensible person maintains his abandonment of blameworthy humility in all circumstances and he does not depart from praiseworthy humility. [An Excerpt from Rawdatul Uqalaa page 58. slightly paraphrased]

Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (rahimahullaah) said: It is obligated on a sensible person to cling to humility and avoid being haughty. And if humility did not contain any [good] trait, except that whenever a person has a lot of humility he is increased in status, then it would have been obligatory upon him not to adorn [himself or herself] with other than it. [An Excerpt from Rawdatul Uqalaa. Page: 58]

Imaam Ibn Hibbaan [rahimahullaah] said: Indeed, none is haughty towards another (person) until he becomes amazed with himself and sees himself as having virtue over others. [An Excerpt from Rawdatul Uqalaa: page: 61]

Imaam Ibn Hibbaan (rahimahullaah) said:  The Poet said: Do not walk on the earth except with humility, for how many a people beneath it were of a higher status than you! And if you are in a state of honour, good and strength, then how many people have passed away who were more powerful than you! [An Excerpt from Rawdatul Uqalaa page 61]

A Noble Trait That Is Not Possessed By Everyone Attributed to Knowledge: [Imaam Yahyah Bin Yahyah An-Naysaabooriy Prolonged His Studies to Learn Manners From Imaam Maalik]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi [hafidhahullaah] saaid: When one sits with the Ulamaa, he will learn – first and foremost – manners and etiquettes. The people used to travel to [Imaam] Maalik [rahimahullaah] from different regions of the earth, and one of those [people] who travelled to him was Yahyah Ibn Yahyah Al-Naysaabooriy [rahimahullaah] – the great Imaam, about whom Imaam Ahmad said, “I have not seen someone like him. He [i.e. Yahyah] read Al-Muwatta to Maalik, then he remained with him; so Maalik noticed that and [wondered] why Yahyah was still with him! So, he patiently waited and after a long time he asked Yahyah, “Why are you [still] sitting here [i. studying with me]?” He said, “To learn from your manners.”

Sadly, you see that many people refrain from coming to the scholars to acquire knowledge from them. This – and Allaah knows best – is the cause of self-deception and evil manners. And due to this, you will find that they are upon a more [severe state of] self-deception, ignorance, insolence and bad manners than others. When a person relies on himself and he is not taught by a teacher [i.e. by an upright teacher who has a recommendation to teach], but rather he teaches himself, then this is a sign of sickness. The [best and most appropriate] path is to acquire knowledge from the scholars, for they will direct you to the book that is suitable for your intellectual capacity [or level of understanding] and ability. The scholar knows and has definitely acquired experience before you. [Source: An Excerpt from Majmoo Kutub Wa Rasaa’il Wa Fataawaa Fadheelatish Shaikh Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadi Umayr Al-Madkhali. Those Who Live In Awe Due To Fear of Allaah, Even Though They Are Foremost In Knowledge And Piety

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Verily! Those who live in awe for fear of their Lord; and those who believe in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord; And those who join not anyone (in worship) as partners with their Lord; And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning). It is these who race for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salat (prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on]. And We tax not any person except according to his capacity, and with Us is a Record which speaks the truth, and they will not be wronged. [Surah Al-Muminoon Aayaat 57-62]

Few Reminders about the People Mentioned In the Above Aayah:

Their hearts are filled with fear due to the fear they have of their Lord. They fear that the justice of their Lord will take effect on them and thus they will be left with no good deeds. They are afraid of having a false good opinion about themselves that they have fulfilled the rights of their Lord and they fear that their Eemaan will cease. This is due to the fact that they know their Lord and what He deserves of exaltation and glory. This fear of theirs necessitates that they refrain from that which will bring about those evil consequences of sins and due to falling short in that which one has been commanded. They carry out that which they have been commanded, such as the prayer, zakat, hajj etc whilst fearing for themselves when their deeds will be presented in the presence of their Lord and on that Day in which they will stand in His presence [on the day of judgement] – fearing that their deeds will not save them from the punishment of Allaah due to their knowledge of their Lord and what He truly deserves of obedience through various types of worship. [Ref 1]

Ibraaheem At-Taymi [rahimahullaah] said: I do not compare my speech with my actions except fearing that my [speech] belies [my deeds]. Ibn Abee Mulayka [rahimahullaah] said: I met thirty Companions of the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and each of them was afraid of hypocrisy for himself and none of them said that he was as strong in belief as the angel Jibreel or Meekaa’eel. And Al-Hasan Al-Basri [rahimahullaah] said: It is only true believers who fear nifaaq and only a munaafiq who considers himself safe [i.e. does not fear nifaaq]. [Ref 2]

What Sincere Advice to The Muslims Necessitate

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Sincere Advice to The Muslims: It is to guide them towards the beneficial things related to the affairs of their Aakhirah and the Dunyaa, and to aid them in that; guide them towards rectification in affairs related to their Dunyah and Aakhirah; love them for the sake of Allaah, aid them in truth, co-operate with them in good and guidance and not in sin and transgression; clarify the truth for them and advise them with it, and disapprove evil if they violate Allaah’s Right etc [Ref 1]

Teach them what they are ignorant of in their religion and aid them upon that through speech and action; repel harm from them and seek what is beneficial for them; command them with good and forbid them from evil with softness and sincerity and be compassionate towards them; respect their elder ones and have mercy on their young ones; speak to them with beautiful admonition and abandon deceiving and envying them; love for them what you love for yourself and hate for them what you hate for yourself; defend their wealth, honour and other than that through speech and action [Ref 2]

Four Ahaadeeth From Adabul Mufrad Regarding Good Character With Brief Commentary of Some Scholars Quoted By Ustaadh Abu Talhah – Dawud Burbank [may Allaah have mercy upon him and his wife]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

 Narration One:

Hadeeth Number 270: Abu Dardaa [radiyallaahu-anhu] reported from the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] who said: “There is nothing that will be heavier upon the balance than good character”. [Ref 1]

Al-Haafiz Muhammad Abdur-Rahmaan al-Mubaarakfooree -rahimahullaah- [d.1353 H] said  in his explanation of the Sunan of at-Tirmidhee: As is established, everything that is hated by Allaah has no weight or value, just as everything which is beloved to Him will be something very great with Him, just as He [The Most High] said regarding the Disbelievers Soorah al-Kahf: [ فَلَا نُقِيمُ لَهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ وَزۡنً۬ا – So on the Day of Resurrection We shall give no weight to them]. [18:105]

And in the well-known hadeeth there occurs: Two sayings are light upon the tongue, heavy upon the Balance, beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhaanallaahi wa bihamdihi, Subhaanallaahil-`Azeem (How free is Allaah of all imperfections, and all praise is for Him! How free is Allaah, the Tremendous, of all imperfections!). [Ref 2]

Shaikh `Abdul-Muhsin al-`Abbaad -hafizahullaah- said in his taped lessons in explanation of Sunan Abee Daawood: This contains affirmation of the Balance (al-Meezaan); and that the actions of the servants will be weighed on the Day of Resurrection; and it indicates the tremendous status of good character, and its reward with Allaah -the Mighty and Majestic; and that it will be one of the heaviest things upon the Balance, when the deeds are weighed, because it is from the greatest and most excellent of deeds.

Narration Two:

Hadeeth no. 272 : Abdullaah Ibn `Amr -radiyallaahu `anhumaa- reported that he heard the Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] say: Shall I inform you of the most beloved of you to me, and those who will be seated closest to me on the Day of Resurrection? So the people remained silent, so he repeated it two or three times. The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allaah! He said: Those who are best in character. [Ref 3]

Imaam an-Nawawee -rahimahullaah- (d.676 H) said in his explanation of Saheeh Muslim: It contains an encouragement upon good character, and an explanation of the virtue of its possessor; and it is the characteristic of the Prophets of Allaah -the Most High- and His righteous and beloved servants. Al-Hasan al-Basree said: The true reality of good character is: Doing good to others, withholding from harming, and having a cheerful face; and al-Qaadee Iyaad said: It is to associate with the people in a beautiful manner, to have a cheerful face, to show love for them, to show compassion for them, to tolerate the harm they cause, to be forbearing with them, to have patience upon disagreeable things, to abandon having pride or being arrogant towards them; and to avoid harshness, anger, and taking them to account. [Ref4]

Imaam Ahmad ibn `Umar al-Qurtubee -rahimahullaah- (d.656 H) said in his explanation of the Abridgement of Saheeh Muslim: So the praiseworthy manners are the characteristics of the Prophets, the beloved and obedient servants of Allaah, and the people of virtue, such as: having patience with disagreeable things, having forbearance when treated with coarseness, bearing harm, treating the people well, showing affection towards them, hastening to carry out their needs, being merciful, compassionate, being mild when disagreeing, verifying affairs carefully, avoiding that which causes corruption and evils; and, in summary, the best of manners is that you favour others over your own self: so you treat people with justice and fairness, but you do not enforce justice and fairness for yourself; so you pardon those who wrong you, and you give to those who withhold from you. [Ref 5]

Al-Haafiz `Abdur-Ra-oof al-Munaawee -rahimahullaah- (d. 1031 H) said: Yoosuf ibn Asbaat said: The sign of good character is in ten qualities: rarely arguing, treating others fairly, abandoning seeking out people’s faults, seeking to rectify and improve any evil qualities which appear, seeking excuses for people, bearing harm, blaming oneself, occupying oneself with awareness of one’s own faults and not with the faults of others, having a cheerful face, and being mild in speech. [Ref 6]

Narration Three:

Hadeeth no. 277: From Anas -radiyallaahu `anhu- who said: I served the Prophet r for ten years, and he never said Uff [1] to me, and he never said to me about anything which I had not done: Why didn’t you do it? Nor about anything which I had done: Why did you do it?! [Ref 7]

Imaam an-Nawawee -rahimahullaah- (d.676 H) said in his explanation of Saheeh Muslim: The hadeeth contains an explanation of the completeness of his character, and the fine manner in which he treated others, and his forbearance, and how he pardoned and overlooked.

Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajr -rahimahullaah- (d. 852 H) said: The point of benefit to be derived from this is leaving off rebuking for that which has been left, since one is still free to carry it out if there is a need for it; and it produces the benefit of keeping the tongue free from censuring and blaming; and it causes the mind of the servant to have amicable feelings, due to his not having been rebuked; and all of this applies in cases relating to the person’s individual rights; as for the affairs which are obligations in the Religion, then they are not overlooked, since they fall under ordering the good and forbidding the evil. [Ref 8]

Narration Four:

Hadeeth no. 323: From Asmaa bint Yazeed -radiyallaahu `anhaa- that she said The Prophet said: Shall I not inform you of the best ones from amongst you? They said: Yes, indeed. He said: Those who when they are seen, then Allaah is remembered. Shall I not inform you of the worst ones from amongst you? They said: Yes, indeed. He said: Those who go about carrying tales to cause mischief between friends, those who seek harm and corruption for the innocent.  [Ref 9]

Al-Haafiz `Abdur-Ra-oof al-Munaawee-rahimahullaah- (d. 1031 H) said: (Shall I not inform you of the best ones from amongst you): i.e. those who are the best of you, O Believers. They said: Yes indeed. He said: Those who when they are seen, then Allaah is remembered. i.e. because of their behaviour and appearance, because an individual from them is sorrowful, downcast, his head is bowed, he is silent; the effect of fear is seen upon his appearance, his behaviour, his movements, his stillness, and his speech. One does not look at him except that it causes him to remember Allaah. His outward appearance is an indication of his knowledge. So these people are known through their appearance: in their calmness, their humility, and their humbleness. [Ref 10]
