[1] O People of the Book! Here are some of the noble qualities of some of your predecessors who accepted Islaam

Allaah (The Most High) said:

Not all of them are alike; a party of the people of the Scripture stand for the right, they recite the Verses of Allah during the hours of the night, prostrating themselves in prayer. They believe in Allah and the Last Day; they enjoin Al-Ma’ruf (Islamic Monotheism, and following Prophet Muhammad ) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and opposing Prophet Muhammad ; and they hasten in (all) good works; and they are among the righteous. [3:113-114]

Keeping a distance from a Mubtadi even if he has knowledge of fiqh and hadeeth-[Shaikh Fawzaan(may Allaah preserve him)] clarifies

This questioner says:

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

If a student of knowledge utters innovation and calls to it, and he is one with Fiqh and (knowledge of) Hadeeth; does his speech of innovation necessitate an invalidation of his knowledge and his (knowledge) of hadeeth, and not to (benefit from) him unrestrictedly?

Answer:

Yes, he is not to be trusted; the one who is an Innovator is neither to be trusted nor his knowledge, nor (to have) a lackadaisical (stance) towards him. That is because if you (have) a lackadaisical (stance) towards him, the student will be influenced by his Shaikh-he will be influenced by his teacher. Therefore, it is obligatory to be distanced from the people of innovation, and the Salaf (pious predecessors) used to forbid (others) from sitting with the innovators, visiting and going to them; so that their evil is not spread to the one who sits with them and mixes with them.

We went out with Sufyaan Ath-Thawri (rahimahullaah) on the day of Eed, so he said:

The first thing we will start with on this day of ours is to lower our gaze.

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) warns against Riyaa!

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) said:

“Riyaa is that you perform an act (of worship) and intend that the people see you, praise and commend you. And from that is to perform an act (of worship) in order to be heard, such as reading (the Qur’aan) in order that you are praised and that it is said: ”Indeed, his reading is good and beautiful”; or you perform a lot of Dhikr in order that you are praised and it is said: “He performs a lot of dhikr;” or you enjoin good and forbid evil so that you are praised and commended. This is Riyaa and Shirk Asghar. Therefore, it is obligatory to be mindful of this and that you perform your deeds for the Sake of Allaah alone; and not for the people, their praises and commendations for you; rather you learn in order to act and teach your brothers. And you lead them in the prayer whilst hoping for the reward from Allaah and intending to benefit them, and not out of an intention to be seen or heard.

[13] Advice for the seekers of knowledge–do not be oblivious of this aim or goal!

Al-Allaamah Siddeeq Hasan Khan (rahimahullaah) said:

The aim behind the religious sciences is not for the purpose of earning (wealth); rather it is for (the purpose of) acquainting oneself with the realities of the (sharia) and to rectify one’s behaviour (towards his Lord, the people and within himself). The one who learns knowledge (of the religion) for the purpose of trade cannot be a scholar; rather he only resembles the scholars. Indeed the scholars unveiled what the drive behind this was and they spoke about it when the building of schools reached them at Baghdaad. So they established gatherings of knowledge and said: “The possessors of lofty ambitions and the pure souls used to preoccupy themselves with it (i.e. knowledge) –those whose intent behind (seeking) knowledge was due to its nobility and the perfection (that is reached by way of it), so they came to the scholars to benefit from them and their knowledge. However, when (monetary gain) is placed on it, the vilest people and the lazy ones will approach it and thus leading to its disappearance. So at this juncture the (Islamic) sciences of wisdom (found in the Qur’aan, the Sunnah and the understanding of the Salaf) will be abandoned even though they are self-evident in their nobility.

Al-Hasan Al-Basri [Good in this life and the next]

Al-Hasan Al-Basri (rahimahullaah) stated about the saying of Allaah  [وَمِنۡهُم مَّن يَقُولُ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِى ٱلدُّنۡيَا حَسَنَةً۬ وَفِى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً۬ –  And of them there are some who say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good (2:201]

Good in the worldly life is Knowledge and worship.

Good in the afterlife is Paradise.
