Is Shaving The Head Completely A Characteristic of the Khawaarij–

Question

It is reported from the characteristics of the Khawaarij that they shave their heads, is that authentic? And what does it mean?

Answer:

The characteristic of the Khawaarij is that they shave their heads, and this is a characteristic and a sign of theirs; but it is reported in the Sunnah what proves that the shaving (the head) during other than the Hajj and the Umrah (period) is permissible, and that there is no harm in it. But the prohibition is that one takes the Khawaarij as an example and imitates them.

The Mu-aqqibaat- By Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhu]

Ibn Abbaas (radiyallaahu-anhu) said about the statement of Allaah (The Mighty and Majestic) ”For each (person), there are Mu-aqqibaat in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allah.”  They are the angels that protect the person by the command of Allaah; but when what has been decreed for him arrives, they leave him.  [Jaami-ul Uloom Wal-Hikam: page: 199]

Our Salaf: Maalik Bin Deenaar (rahimahullaah)

Maalik Bin Deenaar (rahimahullaah) used to stand for long during the night whilst holding his beard and saying: ”O my Lord: Indeed, you know the dwellers of Paradise and the dwellers of the fire; so which of the two abodes is Maalik’s dwelling place?!” [Jaami-ul Uloom Wal-Hikam: page:68]

How worried are we with this affair?!  If this was the concern of Maalik Bin Deenaar (a devout worshipper and man of waraa and taqwah), then how much do we worry about this afair in a day, a week, a month and in a year!?  We ask Allaah for protection from heedlessness and false hopes.

Our Salaf: Righteous actions–Ibn Ajlaan (rahimahullaah)

Ibn Ajlaan (rahimahullaah) said:

Actions cannot be righteous except with three things: ”(a)The performance of that action in obedience to Allaah and fear of His punishment if you disobey Him; (b) To have a sincere intention and (c) to reach the correctness required in that action. [Jaami-ul Uloom Wal-Hikam: page: 16]

Our Salaf and the fear for themselves- Sufyaan Ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah)

Sufyaan Ath-Thawree’s (rahimahullaah) worry about the affair of one’s past and final deeds used to severely (affect him). So he used to weep, whilst saying: ”I fear to be (written) as a wretched person in the preserved Tablet.” And he used to say: ”I fear to be deprived of Eemaan at the time of death.” [Jaami-ul Uloom Wal-Hikam: page: 68]
