Shaikh – [An Old Man, a Righteous Man or a Man Recognised By Scholar as One With Islamic Knowledge] [Part 1]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh – An Old Man

Allaah [The Most High] stated: [قَالَتْ يَا وَيْلَتَى أَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا عَجُوزٌ وَهَذَا بَعْلِي شَيْخًا إِنَّ هَذَا لَشَيْءٌ عَجِيبٌ – She (i.e. the wife of Ibraaheem) said (in astonishment): “Woe unto me! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman, and here is my husband, a Shaikh (an old man?) Verily! This is a strange thing!] [Surah Hud. Aayah 72]

Allaah [The Most High] said: [قَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الْعَزِيزُ إِنَّ لَهُ أَبًا شَيْخًا كَبِيرًا فَخُذْ أَحَدَنَا مَكَانَهُ إِنَّا نَرَاكَ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ – They (i.e. Prophet Yusuf’s brohers) said: “O ruler of the land! Verily, he (i.e. Bin Yameen) has أَبًا شَيْخًا (an old father) (who will grieve for him); so take one of us in his place. Indeed we think that you are one of the Muhsinun (good-doers)]. [Surah Yusuf. Aayah 78]

Allaah [The Most High] said: [قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُمَا قَالَتَا لَا نَسْقِي حَتَّى يُصْدِرَ الرِّعَاءُ وَأَبُونَا شَيْخٌ كَبِيرٌ – He (i.e. Prophet Musa) said: “What is the matter with you?” They (i.e. the two sisters) said: “We cannot water (our flocks) until the shepherds take (their flocks). And our father is a Shaikhun kabeer (a very old man)”.] [Surah Al-Qasas. Aayah 23]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

[ هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًا ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوا أَشُدَّكُمْ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُوا شُيُوخًا – He, it is Who has created you (Adam) from dust, then from a Nutfah (mixed semen drops of male and female discharge (i.e. Adam’s offspring) then from a clot (a piece of coagulated blood), then brings you forth as children, then (makes you grow) to reach the age of full strength, and afterwards to be Shyookhan (old men and women)…] [Surah Ghaafir. Aayah 67]

“If he has gray hair and his old age has become manifest, then he is a Shaikh” (1)

Shaikh – a Pious Person

Abdur Rahmaan Bin Abee Haatim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “I heard my father saying, ‘Hajjaaj Bin Firaasatah is a righteous Shaikh – one devoted to worship'”. (2)

Shaikh – A Person Recognised By Scholars as One With Knowledge

Raaghib Al-Isfahaanee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “It is said about the one who is aged “The Shaikh”. And it may be used among us regarding someone who has a lot of knowledge, because one of the affairs related to a Shaikh is that he has a lot of experience and knowledge”. (3)

Al-Allaamah Hasan Al-Bannah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: All praise be to Allaah, maashaa’Allaah, they have organisation (in da’wah), they have a maktabah salafiyyah, they have a school, a kindergarten or primary school, all these things are tremendous and all praise be to Allaah they have big numbers with them. They also have with them many Mashaayikh from amongst them Shaykh Abu Khadeejah, they have knowledge, with them is knowledge, and other than him like Shaykh Abu Hakeem Bilal. All of these Maashaa’Allaah and many other people beside them – they are many people I met so I cannot recall their names – but those that are with them I find that they are upon khayr (goodness). Since they have many students of knowledge with them from their likes, so it is laazim (incumbent) that they traverse upon their way, because they have indibaat (firm discipline, groundedness), and all praise is due to Allaah, and they have cooperation and love for the sake of Allaah. They are from the best we have seen here from the different centres and (…) them upon steadfastness(..)”. (4)

In the above statement of Al-Allaamah Hasan Al-Bannah [may Allaah have mercy upon him], he referred to some Salafi teachers – in the West – as Shuyookh and that they have knowledge. Indeed, we know very well that all the Salafi teachers who are referred to as Shaikh are of different levels in knowledge- some are Senior scholars and Mujtahideen, such as the likes of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Haadee, Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan, Al-Allaamah Ubaid Bin Abdillah Al-Jaabiri and others [may Allaah preserve them]. All the other well known Salafi teachers who are referred to as Shaikh – whether they live in the West or in the Muslim lands – know the clear difference when this word Shaikh is applied to them and when applied to the above three scholars and those at their level. Likewise, Al-Allaamah Ubaid Bin Abdullah Al-Jaabiri refers to Shaikh Abdullah Al-Bukhaari [may Allaah preserve him] as Al-Allaamah, but one knows that neither Shaikh Abdullah nor anyone amongst the Salafiyyoon places Shaikh Abdullah at the same level as Shaikh Ubaid.

Likewise, when we say “Shaikh Abu Khadeejah, Shaikh Abu Hakeem, Shaikh Abu Idrees, Shaikh Abu Iyaadh and Shaikh Hasan Somali, Shaikh Abdul Ilaah, Shaikh Uways etc”, we do not intend that they are at the same level as Shaikh Abdullah Al-Bukhaari and those at his level; rather they have been referred to as Shuyookh by an experienced Senior Salafi Scholar and we know exactly what this means, which is that they have knowledge and deserve the title based on what that senior scholar (Al-Allaamah Hasan Al-Bannah) witnessed in person about them. However, it must be understood that neither do these elder brothers demand that they should be given the title Shaikh nor that whoever does not call them Shaikh is disrespectful; rather they were called Shaikh by Al-Allaamah Hasan al-Bannah who also mentioned that they have knowledge. Bear in mind that none forces you to call our elders “Shuyookh” nor is there any suspicion on anyone who refrains from doing so, rather refer to any of them as “Ustaadh” if you wish; but do not object when we call them Shaikh because we have a precedence and we know exactly what this implies. They are people well known for referring back to the Senior Scholars of the Ummah and transmit their works on various topics, clarify the sound Islamic methodology and refute all those who oppose the sound Islamic methodology of the Salafus Saaleh (The Pious Predecessors). This is the context in which Shaikh Hasan Al-Bannah referred to them as Mashaayikh. They are more aware of their level than us and they are not pretenders, rather their efforts in the path of Dawah, teaching and Tarbiyah in the West – together with constant consultation with the Senior Scholars of the Ummah – is well known. May Allaah increase them in knowledge, piety and sincerity Aameen.

Approach Rasmus Paludan’s Affair – [The Far Right (Danish/Swedish) Political Provocateur] – With Sound Proofs and Not Violence

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

[ وَكَذَٲلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا فِى كُلِّ قَرۡيَةٍ أَڪَـٰبِرَ مُجۡرِمِيهَا لِيَمۡڪُرُواْ فِيهَا‌ۖ وَمَا يَمۡڪُرُونَ إِلَّا بِأَنفُسِہِمۡ وَمَا يَشۡعُرُونَ – And thus We have set up in every town the greatest of its criminals to plot therein. But they plot not except against their ownselves, and they perceive (it) not]. [Soorah Al-An’aam: Ayah 123]

[وَكَذَٲلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا فِى كُلِّ قَرۡيَةٍ أَڪَـٰبِرَ مُجۡرِمِيهَا – And thus We have set up in every town the greatest of its criminals] – Meaning: Those figureheads whose crimes were great and whose transgressions were severe. [لِيَمۡڪُرُواْ فِيهَا‌ۖ -to plot therein]- Meaning: Through deception, calling to the path of shaytaan and waging war – through speech and deeds- against the Messengers and their followers. However, their plots and machinations only backfired on them. That is because they plotted and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners.

Likewise, Allaah set up great ones amongst the leaders of guidance and the most virtuous of them, who opposed those criminals, refuted their statements and strove against them in the path of Allaah. They followed the paths leading to the path (of Allaah) and Allaah aided them. Allaah gave them an acute discernment and kept them steadfast. So the days of victory and defeat alternated between them and their enemies, until the affair came to its final end-victory and triumph (for the believers) and the good final end is for the Muttaqoon (i.e. the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)]. (2)

Rasmus Paludan’s behaviour is something well known of the enemies of Allaah and His Messengers, therefore what is incumbent upon the believers is to refute his statements just as Imaam As-Sadi stated, “Likewise Allaah set up great ones amongst the leaders of guidance and the most virtuous of them, who opposed those criminals, refuted their statements and strove against them in the path of Allaah. They followed the paths leading to the path (of Allaah) and Allaah aided them. Allaah gave them an acute discernment and kept them steadfast. So the days of victory and defeat alternated between them and their enemies, until the affair came to its final end-victory and triumph (for the believers) and the good final end is for the Muttaqoon (i.e. the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)]”.

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [وَجَاهِدْهُم بِهِ جِهَادًا كَبِيرًا – And make Jihad against them (by preaching) with the utmost endeavour, with it (i.e. with the Quran).” [Surah Furqan. Aayah 52]

Shaikh Abu Khadeejah [may Allaah protect him] quotes Imaam Asd-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] as follows: “Allāh addressed the Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) with this verse and it was revealed to him in Makkah. And make Jihad against them with it, meaning the Jihad of the Qur’an and the Jihad of the Qur’an at that time was the establishment of Tawḥīd (Islamic Monotheism) and īmān (faith) and the eradication of shirk (the worship of others besides Allāh [سبحانه و تعالى]. Why? Because when that verse was revealed there was no hadd punishment upon the thieves, there was no stoning of the adulteress, there was no obligation of the Hijab. So which Jihad was he commanded to make? It was the Jihad of al-tawḥīd, to abolish shirk and to call the people to the worship of Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) alone and then when that īmān (faith) and tawḥīd was established in their hearts, Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) established for the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) the Islamic state in Al-Medina, after which period all the other regulations of Al-Islam came. This included fasting in the month of Ramadan, Zakat, the performance of Hajj, the wearing of the Hijab, the prescribed punishments against the criminals, and Jihad upon the battlefields. So which Jihad was the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) commanded with in Makkah? The Jihad that Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى) calls: “the great Jihad”. That was the Jihad of the Qur’an, the Jihad of Tawḥīd. This is why the scholars say, that the Jihad against ahlul al-bid’ah (the people of innovation) is more virtuous than Jihad against the open enemy”. (2)

Therefore, this is the sound approach- manifest the beauty of Islam, clarify for the one who enquires, refute the slanderers, behave well towards non-Muslims and refrain from criminality. Neither are protests allowed in Islam nor is Rasmus Paludan worthy of it, rather the Qur'an, the Sunnah and understanding of the companions must be followed in all affairs. O servants of Allah. Indeed Allah has hidden the exact [date] of laylatul Qadr, as a mercy upon His servants and a test [for them]. So that they may increase in action in seeking it, and so the keen hard working person is distinguished from the lazy heedless one.

Reminder By One of Our Beloved Brothers (Abu Maryam) Regarding Being Thankful

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Our beloved brother Abu Maryam (Tariq Al-Kashmeeri)- the one known for his love of Salafiyyah and its adherents- reminded us as follows…”The year is 2002…By the Grace of Allāh the Salafī Masjid in Birmingham opens its doors for the first time!  After years of struggle, feeling constrained, seeing the word “Salafī” tarnished and frowned upon, not having anything but a Bookstore and Islamic Centre [this centre being used for a bookstore, lessons, teaching young children], Allāh blessed us with a Masjid at a time when the Salafīs didn’t have the Masājid and Marākiz they have today. We were overjoyed, overwhelmed and grateful for the Blessing of Allāh upon us!!
The Masjid was instantly a base for the dissemination of knowledge. Brothers and sisters gathered, the smell of freshly painted walls, new carpet and perfume in the air! Abū Talhah (رحمه الله) teaching, Abū Hakeem (حفظه الله) returned from Al-Madīnah, Abū Khadeejah (حفظه الله) teaching; Abū Idrees would soon return. A place to now invite our elders Abū Iyaad, Abdulilah, Uways (حفظهم الله). Abū Hakeem opened this book and taught the Salafīs how to run their first Masjid in our city!
The point of mentioning this is that, as our scholars mentioned many times, giving thanks to Allāh is a necessity due to His Mercy and abundance of blessings upon the Salafī youth here. No doubt, Allāh has showered us with blessings upon blessings since that time. We’ve had Masājid and Marākiz open, up and down the country and our brothers and sisters in those communities have felt the same joy we felt.
As Allāh ﷻ said:  [‎وَإِذۡ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمۡ لَىِٕن شَكَرۡتُمۡ لَأَزِیدَنَّكُمۡۖ – And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings)…] [Surah Ibraaheem. Aayah 7]
Alhamdulillah, how times have changed! As Abū Khadeejah mentioned the other day in his speech after Jumu’ah, “Although they (Ahlul-Bid’ah) may hate it, the Salafīs are front and centre now!” Blessings upon blessings! We can’t thank Allāh enough for these affairs and must *keep striving to aid one another for the Sake of Allāh. Heartwarming to see new projects near completion and commutes getting stronger, may Allāh continue to bless our communities and keep us united upon the Sunnah. [end of quote]
May Allaah preserve our beloved brother Abu Maryam, preserve all the Maraakiz and teachers Aameen.

Benefits of ‘Itikaaf on Safeguarding the Tongue and One’s Actions – Shaykh Al-Fawzan

(During ‘itikaaf and outside of ‘itikaaf) a person should speak for that which he needs for religious and worldly affairs as for pointless superfluous speech then there is no benefit in it from two angles:

1. The wasting of a persons time and busying him away from the remembrance of Allah.

2. It’s possible and refuge is sought with Allah, that the speech may be impermissible and his speech may nullify his actions, because he utters a statement which Allah is angered by. It is possible a person could nullify all of his actions and apostate from Islam (1), therefore speech can be dangerous for a person if he does not safeguard it, and there is no curing it except by ‘itikaaf because when a person isolates himself solely for the worship of Allah, he accustoms himself and trains himself upon little speech and upon the restraining of his tongue.

Ta’leeqaat ‘ala Mukhtasar Zaad al-Ma’aad pages 601-602

(1) On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah upon him) say,

‘Indeed a servant may utter a single word and because of it plummet into the Hellfire farther than the distance between the east and the west.’ Bukhari 6477 Muslim 2988

How to Attain and Actualise Sincerity in a Persons Actions? – Shaykh Abu Abdillah Khalid adh-Dhufayri (Allah preserve him)

There are many ways to actualise sincerity from them are the following,

(1) A person recognises the reality and status of this worldly life, it’s passing by and will not last.

(2) That it is has no value in reality.

(3) That a person remembers death frequently.

(4) He remembers the purpose for his creation.

(5) He ponders upon the names and attributes of Allah, he recognises and affirms that Allah is Al-‘Aleem He knows all, he has the Muraaqabah of Allah, meaning he is aware that Allah knows, hears and sees everything he does.

(6) He works towards rectifying his sincerity and realises it is from the highest levels of worship.

(7) There is no arrival to paradise except by the Pleasure of Allah.

There are many affairs and means which will aid a person rectify his sincerity and these are from them.

Responsibilities That Make You Upright & Spread the Daw’ah – Shaykh Rabee (Allah preserve him).

The salafi bears a responsibility; upon him is to study (beneficial) knowledge, to study the books of the salaf, the belief of the salaf, their exegesis of the Quran and their explanations of the messenger’s hadeeth (alayhis salaatu was salaam), so that he is grounded in (beneficial) knowledge, whilst he truthfully calls to Allah with knowledge and insight.

He (The Most High) said,

Say, “This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him.” (12:108)

Meaning, I (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) and my true followers, call to Allah with sure sighted insight; ie upon knowledge.

The caller to ignorance (misguidance, evil, innovations), such as the callers of misguidance and innovation – they are ignoramuses, ignorant of the path of truth and the (correct) call to Allah; they call to falsehood.

The people of innovation and misguidance call to falsehood, even if they are characterised as having knowledge, and even if they have certificates, then they are (still) ignoramuses, just as some of the salaf said, ‘a scholar has never brought about an innovation, rather innovations are only brought about by the ignorant ones, even if they call themselves scholars, then they are (still) ignorant.’

So learn and study the Book of Allah, and the Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam), study the Oneness of Allah (The Blessed & Most High).

May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our, Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

Nafahaat al-Huda wal-Eemaan min Majaalis al-Qur’aan of Shaykh Rabee (Hafidahullah) Pg 69
