A Realisation That Has Recently Opened Our Eyes Regarding Some Competing Narratives of the People

Allah, The Exalted, says:
Allah knows the fraud of the eyes, and all that the breasts conceal. [Ghafir. 19]
[يَعْلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ ٱلْأَعْيُنِ – Allah knows the fraud of the eyes]: This pertains to the gaze that an individual conceals from their sitting partner and companions. It is discreetly stealing a glance. [وَمَا تُخْفِى ٱلصُّدُورُ – and all that the breasts conceal]: This pertains to the undisclosed actions of an individual. Allah is aware of these concealed deeds. (1)
Allah, The Exalted, says:
Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of the unseen of the heavens and the earth. Verily! He is the All-Knower of that is in the breasts. [Fatir. 38]
Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:
It is obligated to a person to be mindful that Allah (knows, hears, and sees everything about them). This awareness should prompt them to focus their attention on Allah, The Mighty and Majestic, directing all their intentions, hopes, and aspirations toward Allah, and their primary concern should always be to seek what pleases Allah. (2)
Allah, The Exalted, says:
Say: “I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the (only) Deity (in truth) of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer (the devil) who whispers evil and withdraws (from his whispering after one remembers Allah), who whispers in the breasts of mankind, of jinns and men.
Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:
Why (the mention of the word) “Breast” and not “Hearts”? Contemplate the underlying reason behind Allah’s statement: [ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ – who whispers in the breasts of mankind]; but Allah did not say, “in their hearts”. As-Sadr (breast) serves as the courtyard and residence of the heart, where all matters pass through before reaching the heart. They gather in the breast before making their way into the heart, functioning as a corridor for it. Those who grasp this will comprehend Allah’s statement:
[It was] so that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts]. [Aal-Imran. 154]
Satan infiltrates the heart’s courtyard and dwelling place, casting whatever he desires to cast into the heart; whispers in breast, and his insinuations reach the heart. This is why Allah [The Exalted] says: [فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ – Then Satan whispered to him] and did not say, “In him” because the meaning is that he cast that to him and conveyed it to him, so it entered his heart. The heart may be initially untainted; then influenced by whispers (temptations). Sin crosses the mind, causing the heart to imagine and desire it. Gradually, this desire takes on a deceptive allure, captivating the self and leading it astray. Despite the heart’s awareness of the harm and evil consequences, sin continues to be portrayed as desirable, hindering the person from truly understanding its true nature. As a result, the focus shifts solely to the image of sin and indulgence, causing one to forget what lies beyond. This willfully chosen path transforms into an unwavering determination, intensifying the heart’s eagerness to indulge in wrongdoing. (3)
Allah, The Most High, said:
And indeed We have created man, and We know what his ownself whispers to him. And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein (by Our Knowledge). (Remember!) that the two receivers (recording angels) receive (each human being after he or she has attained the age of puberty), one sitting on the right and one on the left (to note his or her actions). Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it). [50:16-18]
Few Reminders from the above Ayat:
Allah, The Most High, informed us that He alone created human beings-males and females- and He knows all their state of affairs. He knows everything that is hidden about them and what their own souls whisper to them. Allah [The Most High] is nearer to them than their jugular veins by His knowledge, even though the jugular vein is the closest thing to the human. Therefore, this should make the human being mindful of Allah -the One Who knows all the hidden affairs in the soul and heart of the human being in all circumstances. This should also make the human being shy in the presence of Allah -that he [or she] is not seen committing what Allah has forbidden or abandoning what Allah has commanded. [4] [end of quotes]
Nowadays, when the disputants approach us with complaints, especially two people or two parties that know one another very well, we employ careful deliberation, verify, and hear the other side. This is because, in recent years, after the death of many of the scholars, we have observed, lent an attentive ear, and waited. Then that which we did not expect came to light regarding the issues that are accompanied by the competing narratives between the people.
We observed the following: taking someone’s words, actions, or past mistakes out of context to create a misleading impression; selective presentation of facts; context stripping; image management; plausible deniability; abuse of credibility; selective disclosure; amplified insider knowledge; betrayal of relational trust; reputational manipulation; selective character assassination; abuse of relational credibility; a one-sided narrative designed to influence third-party perceptions; selective omission; quote-mining; chronological distortion; removal of the trigger or provocation; isolating an incident from the broader relationship; changing the scale of an event; presenting interpretation as fact; false equivalence; double-standard framing; emotional framing; generalising from isolated examples; whataboutism, pattern manufacturing; context substitution; asymmetrical detail; strategic chronology; and a combination of intimacy, credibility, selective disclosure, and audience influence.
So, unless the matter is as clear as the midday sun in a dispute, we employ careful deliberation for many weeks to find out exactly what took place. This is what we also advise our younger brothers and sisters at Salaficentre: do not jump into the disputes of the people, nor take any sides, until everything is verified, especially if the dispute is between two people who have known each other for many years, even prior to you knowing them.
This does not mean that we doubt the narratives of the reliable and truthful people. Rather, we employ careful deliberation when conflicting details reach us about a person who is well-known for his upright conduct, honesty, and truthfulness, regardless of who tells us that they know them better than us. For indeed, they can keep that knowledge, but our concern is to verify when conflicting details reach us about a good person. I ask Allah:
O Allah! By Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if life is good for me, and let me die if death is good for me; O Allah! I ask You to grant me (the blessing of having) fear of You in private and public; And I ask you (to make me utter) a statement of truth in times of contentment and anger; And I ask You for moderation when in a state of wealth and poverty; And I ask you for blessings that never ceases; And I ask You for the coolness of my eye that never ends; And I ask You (to make me pleased) after (Your) decree; And I ask You for a life of (ease, comfort, tranquility etc) after death; I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face (i.e. in the Hereafter) and yearning to meet You without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me); O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of Eemaan, and make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others). [Sunan An-Nasaa’ee’ Number 1305 & declared Saheeh by Imaam Albaani (rahimahullaah) in As-Saheehah Number 1301] [5]
O Allah! Rectify my religion for me, which is the safeguard of my affairs; rectify my worldly [affairs], wherein is my livelihood; and rectify my Afterlife to which is my return; and make life for me [as a means of] increase in every good and make death for me as a rest from every evil.
