It was said to Sad Ibn Abee Waqqaas (radiyallaahu-anhu): ”Amongst the companions of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) your supplication is answered?” He said: ”I have never put a morsel of (food) in my mouth, except that I knew where it came from and where it originated.” [Jaami-ul Iloom Wal-Hikam: page: 115]
”We do not recognize one (merely) due to his accomplishment of a lot of prayers and fasting; rather what is recognizable to us are generosity, guilelessness and being good natured, and to give sincere advice to the Ummah.” [Jaami-ul Uloom Wal-Hikam: Page: 91]
”An action may be small, but it is magnified by the intention (behind it); and it may be that an action is big, but it is made small by the intention (behind it)” [Jaami-ul Uloom wal-hikam: page:16]
Question: When does the one who (intends) to fast stop eating and drinking; it is whilst the Adhaan (of Fajr) is being called or after the Adhaan has been called?
Answer: The Islamic legislation commands cessation of (eating and drinking) when fajr arrives (i.e. when a person is certain that Fajr has entered), whether before the Adhaan or after the Adhaan (i.e. whether he hears the Adhaan being called after he is already certain that fajr has entered or whether he heard it thereafter after already being certain that it has entered). That is because Allaah said:
“And eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your Saum (fast) till the nightfall.”
[Surah Al-Baqara: Ayah: 187]
However, the common practice is that the Mu-adh-dhin does not call the Adhaan except when fajr arrives. So when it is the case that it has being legislated to (cease eating and drinking) when the Adhaan is called, then it is incumbent to stop and not eat. Therefore, resolve to stop eating when the Adhaan begins, because in the majority of cases the Mu-adh-dhin does not call the Adhaan except when fajr arrives, especially the Mu-adh-dhin of Masjid Al-haraam (i.e. the Kabah).

Narrated Aisha (radiyallaahu-anhaa): Bilaal used to pronounce the Adhaan at night, so Allaah’s Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said, ‘’Carry on taking your meals (eat and drink) til Ibn Umm Maktoom pronounces the Adhaan, for he does not pronounce it till it is dawn. Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) stated concerning the interval between the two Adhaans: ”(It is) a short time period.” [For further details see: Al-Hulalul Ibreeziyyah Min At-Taleeqaat Al-Baaziyyah Alaa Saheeh Al-Bukhaariy: Vol:2: foot note 1]
Once we were with Shu’bah (rahimahullaah), so Sulaymaan Ibnul Mugheerah (rahimahullaah) came along whilst weeping. Shubah (rahimahullaah) said to him, ”What makes you weep O father of Saeed?” He said, ”My donkey died; I missed the Jumu’ah prayer and my needs.” He (Shubah) said: ”How much did you buy it for?” He said, ”Three Deenaars.” He (Shubah) said, ”I have three Deenaars; by Allaah I do not have other than it. O boy bring that scrap (of cloth)” and in it was three deenaars, so he gave it to him (i.e to Sulaymaan) and said, ”Buy a donkey and do not weep.” [Siyar A’laam Nubulaa: 7/211]

Narrated Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu-anhu): The Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ”Whoever established prayer on the night of Qadr with Eemaan and hoping for a reward from Allaah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.”[Saheeh al-Bukhaari Vol 3: hadeeth Number: 1901]
Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) said: Having Eemaan that it (i.e. Ramadaan) was legislated by Allaah and seeking reward, as opposed to the one who (fasted) out of blind following. And this forgiveness is restricted with the abandonment of the major sins. (i.e. a person receives this forgiveness when he abandons the major sins).
