Brief Scrutiny of David Ben Basat on Radicalisation, Stability, and Integration

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

And argue not with the people of the Scripture, unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in good manner, inviting them to Islamic Monotheism with His Verses), except with such of them as do wrong, and say (to them): “We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you; our Ilah (God) and your Ilah (God) is One (i.e. Allah), and to Him we have submitted (as Muslims).” [Al-Ankabut 46]

In this article, we aim to present a few reflections on an opinion piece written by David Ben Basat in the Jerusalem Post, entitled “Without taking action against radicalization, Europe risks losing stability.” One of the key motivations behind our observations is the reference to Birmingham Muslims made by David. Birmingham is not only the birthplace of many of us but also our place of residence, where both Muslim and non-Muslim communities coexist. Therefore, any commentary regarding Muslim life in Birmingham must be grounded in factual accuracy, avoiding ambiguity, or sweeping generalisations that may distort the true essence of the situation from all perspectives.

David stated: “In November 2015, the ISIS terror organization struck at the heart of France’s capital. A series of coordinated attacks – including suicide bombings, shootings, and other acts of violence – claimed the lives of approximately 150 people and injured hundreds more. In response, then-President François Hollande declared a state of emergency, closing the nation’s borders for the first time since World War II. Paris came to a standstill. Its stock exchange, schools, and shopping centers were shuttered, and the Eiffel Tower was plunged into darkness. The nation declared three days of mourning”. [end of quote]

Response: Regardless of the religious affiliations of those responsible for this tragic event, both Muslims and non-Muslims have suffered at the hands of terrorists across various regions. It is a sentiment shared by all individuals of integrity to denounce the horrors witnessed in Paris and beyond, and it is imperative that those who perpetrated such violence face the most fitting retribution. As for the underlying motives as some have suggested – whether this incident was anticipated yet allowed to unfold for the sake of political maneuvering or to manipulate public sentiment, diverting attention from domestic issues that authorities preferred to keep in the shadows—such matters remain in the unseen, known only to Allah and those directly involved. Nevertheless, irrespective of any ulterior motives, this act is unequivocally deemed unlawful in the Sight of the Creator, warranting the harshest consequences for its perpetrators. Terrorism, regardless of its source—be it individuals, factions, or state actors—constitutes a heinous offense. The actions of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Jabhat An-Nusra, Boko Haram, Al-Shabab, some members of Netanyahu’s Zionist security forces and others are all met with unreserved condemnation.

David stated: “Subsequently, France has faced many terror attacks and murders carried out by radicalized Muslim immigrants. Shocked citizens have struggled to comprehend how their nation, after offering refuge to those fleeing war and poverty, in return for its hospitality, had become the target of violence and terror in return”. [end of quote]

Response: A radicalised Muslim can be understood as an individual who, burdened by grievances, lacks the profound understanding and self-restraint to navigate these issues, or as one who has been manipulated by the khawarij, who distort religious texts to rationalise their so-called Jihad. While we share David’s astonishment at the betrayal of those granted refuge, a far greater outrage lies in the relentless brutality inflicted on Palestinians for over seventy years. This, however, does not excuse Hamas or any other faction from inflicting harm upon non-combatants and unarmed civilians. The terrorist acts in France are unequivocally condemned; they are indefensible, irrespective of whether the perpetrators are migrants or the descendants of migrants raised within the nation. Yet, it is crucial to recognise that neither terrorists affiliated with Islam or Christianity have perpetrated atrocities – against Palestinians – on the scale witnessed from various Zionist Administrations over the past seven decades. Furthermore, the expulsion of individuals from their homes occurs with the complicity of the military, as settlers continuously displace people from their lands.

David stated: “Terrorism is not new. Its aim is political, social, or religious change through fear. Since the 19th century, modern terrorism has grown increasingly sophisticated. Groups such as the Palestinian Fatah have targeted Israeli interests – while al-Qaeda, founded in 1988 by Abdullah Azzam and financed by Osama bin Laden – launched global attacks like 9/11, fueling a US-led war on terror that included invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq”. [end of quote]

Response: Terrorism, indeed, is a phenomenon that has persisted throughout history, and the Ummah of Muhammad is well aware of this reality. Various factions, including the Khawaarij and certain Zionist groups, have resorted to instilling fear and terror to fulfill their political and religious aspirations. When reflecting on the 19th century and the evolution of terrorism, it is very important not to overlook the actions of some Zionist factions and their violent acts since 1948. Regardless of the origins and funding of Al-Qaeda, whether attributed to Bin Laden or others whose destructive methods are well-documented by Salafi scholars, the invasion of Iraq stands as an unjust act, executed under misleading pretenses. Notably, Netanyahu emerged as one of the key figures in fabricating narratives that exacerbated the situation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33vOBjMpXTo

David stated: “However, both the United States and European nations underestimated the cultural differences of Muslim immigrants. Many arrived with little interest in integrating into Western society, instead establishing enclaves governed by Islamic religious leaders. In cities such as Malmö, Amsterdam, Berlin, Birmingham, and Brussels, where immigrants exceed 20% of the total population, crime rates have surged, overwhelming local law enforcement”. [end of quote]

Response: This assertion aligns with what we initially described as generalisations, half-truths, and exaggerations. To begin with, cultural differences cannot be deemed a catalyst for criminal behaviour because regardless of a Muslim’s cultural background, it is unequivocally understood that criminality is denounced in both the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Thus, the reason for such behaviour stems from a deficiency in the fear of Allah and a personal indifference towards the welfare of others, both of which are condemned in these sacred texts. Furthermore, the concept of integration is inherently subjective and can be interpreted in various ways. Can one truly claim that an individual who grows a beard, wears trousers above the ankles, or a woman who wears a Jilbaab and a Niqab is uninterested in integration? No rational person would assert this, as these choices reflect personal freedoms and the right to practice one’s faith. Similarly, does abstaining from pork, smoking, consuming alcohol, or engaging in premarital sexual relations signify a lack of integration within Western societies? It is imperative for David to articulate his definition of integration versus non-integration with clarity.

Lastly, David has failed to specify any individuals in the cities he references, such as Birmingham, who have contributed to the notion of enclaves. While it is undeniable that certain areas exhibit cultural diversity, this does not inherently imply a lack of integration. As previously mentioned, specific examples of non-integration must be provided, allowing for a thorough examination of whether these instances are rooted in religious rights, personal choices, or perhaps a misunderstanding on the part of those perceived as resistant to integration. For instance, did the Jewish community not advocate for certain accommodations for their Sabbath in Manchester, and would that be classified as a lack of integration? [Refer to Footnote a]

Was every non-Jew content with the initiative?! Here are some quotes from the Daily Mail regarding what some locals said about the request:

[Uproar over plans to create special exemption area for Jewish people in wealthy village marked out by 18ft tall yellow poles – as opponents oppose ‘religious enclave’ By CHRIS POLLARD Published: 13:25, 13 September 2024]

Quotes from the newspaper:

Angry locals have been leafleting households warning of damage to ‘community cohesion’ if the plan – the third of its type in just ten years – gets the go-ahead, saying 8,000 homes would be affected by the ‘religious enclave’.

One local said: ‘It’s nothing to do with the poles and the wire. It’s creating religious division which we don’t need in this area. I would feel the same no matter what religion wanted to create their own little enclave.

‘Be satisfied with the fact that we can have temples and churches and other places of worship for all religions in our area. That should be enough.

‘Keep the rest of the religious doctrine within these places or in your own home. If we allow this eruv then we can’t say no to Muslims wanting speakers on every street corner calling people to prayer – and on it goes.’

A leaflet distributed anonymously across households warned the eruv would ‘threaten the balance of our diverse and secular community, identifying our areas with one religion above others, threatening community cohesion’.

It added: ‘We have enough problems with racism in Britain today. Lets not make matters worse. Stop the Hale Eruv Now.’ [End of quotes]

These were some of the sentiments expressed by some among the local non-Jewish populace when Jewish leaders sought assistance in enhancing their observance of the Sabbath within their community. Therefore, it is important that David articulates his definition of lack of integration regarding Muslims in Birmingham and beyond, ensuring that each circumstance is assessed with clarity, devoid of conjecture and uncertainty.

David stated: “Clashes between Western values and conservative Islamic norms”. Significant cultural clashes between Western values – freedom of speech, secularism, and gender equality – and conservative Islamic norms exacerbate tensions. Incidents like the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad heighten cultural divides”. [end of quote]

Response: This topic has been a subject of discourse for many years, and the conversation remains vibrant. It is important to note that this discussion transcends the Muslim community, as the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah provide the only true resolution to the challenges and disputes faced by both humanity and Jinn. Therefore, it is important that David articulates each situation and incident with precision, allowing us to delineate the guidance offered by the Qur’an and Sunnah, as elucidated by the well known Salafi Scholars, such as the likes of Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him. Furthermore, one must possess the discernment to differentiate between cultural practices and Islamic law, as these issues are frequently conflated by some Muslims and non-Muslims. In the case of insults directed at the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, such actions have been denounced not only by Muslims but also by others who assert that true freedom of speech does not encompass the slander of others. In this context, Shaikh Abu Iyaad, may Allah preserve him, has written a profound response addressing the extremism of the Kharijites and the disdainful secularists who attack and mock the Prophets, especially Prophet Muhammad. Read here:

The Nobe, Revered Prophet of Islam Muhammad Between The Kharijite Terrorist Savages and The Confused Conjecting Existentialist, Nihilist Haters: https://ia601704.us.archive.org/0/items/the-prophet-of-islam/the-prophet-of-islam.pdf

David stated: “Antisemitism is on the rise, not only among Muslim migrants but also among native Europeans. Rabbi Menachem Margolin, chairman of the European Jewish Association, notes daily attacks on Jews and lenient punishments for perpetrators. According to Margolin, European Jewry is in its worst state since Kristallnacht. Many Jews now hire bodyguards and hide their identities in public”. [end of quote]

Response: Regarding anti-Semitism, we will refer to this article by Shaikh Abu Iyaad, may Allah protect him. https://abuiyaad.com/sn/muslims-antisemitism

David stated: “The October 7, 2023, attacks and the ongoing war with Hamas, coupled with biased international media coverage, have accelerated anti-Israel sentiment. Violent protests erupt regularly across Europe, bolstering far-Right groups such as France’s National Front and the Netherlands’ Freedom Party. These parties advocate for stricter immigration policies, leveraging fears of terrorism and cultural shifts to gain support.

Governments in Hungary, Poland, and Italy have enacted laws restricting immigration and are building border fences and implementing rigorous asylum criteria.

Some countries have banned face coverings and imposed cultural integration requirements for citizenship. While these measures attract criticism from human rights groups, proponents argue they are necessary to preserve Europe’s social and economic stability”. [end of quote]

Response: When discussing the factors contributing to anti-Israel sentiment, David highlights several key issues. These include the rise of far-right political parties, the implementation of restrictive immigration laws in certain European nations, the prohibition of face coverings, and the push for cultural integration as a requirement for citizenship. The debate surrounding these topics has persisted for many years, all while the ongoing conflict against Palestinians has continued, alongside the recent excessive measures adopted by Netanyahu’s Zionist army. It’s crucial to clarify that we neither dispute the right of any race to exist nor support the oppression of any individual. What many are voicing concerns about is the violence perpetrated by many among Netanyahu’s Zionist security forces and the harmful rhetoric that has led to what some have considered genocide. [Refer to footnote b] It’s important to note that not all Jewish individuals support the actions of Netanyahu’s administration, which has faced accusations of violence and oppression against Palestinians—actions that have been described as genocidal recently. Additionally, we do not suggest that the writer condones such actions, as there is no evidence to support that claim. Similarly, we denounce any actions by individuals or groups identifying as Muslim—whether in Palestine, the UK, or elsewhere—that harm non-combatants or fellow citizens, irrespective of their faith. We also stand firmly against vigilantism and any form of anti-Semitism.

David stated finally: “Europe stands at a crossroads. Its ability to balance its commitment to democracy and human rights with the need to address terror, crime, and cultural change will determine its future. Without decisive action, the continent risks losing its historical identity. Citizens, frustrated by law enforcement’s delayed response to violence, may eventually take matters into their own hands”. [end of quote]

Response: The ongoing discourse surrounding various political systems and lifestyles has been a persistent engagement for humanity since the deviation from Tawhid during the time of Prophet Nuh, peace be upon him. This dialogue often serves to highlight the perceived superiority of different ways of life. The Prophets and Messengers, peace and blessings of Allah be upon them, particularly the most noble among them—Muhammad, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Jesus—were sent to societies that had already entrenched their own practices, whether as idol worshippers or as communities that had altered and misinterpreted the teachings of their respective Prophets. Despite these challenges, these Prophets coexisted peacefully within these societies, extending an invitation to reflect on the fundamental purpose for which both humans and Jinns were created, as Allah said:

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱعْبُدُونِ

And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else).” [Al-Anbiya 25]

Allah said:

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc.i. e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).” [An-Nahl. 36]

This message did not incite turmoil; rather, the Messengers exemplified justice and exhibited profound concern for their communities, despite enduring mistreatment and facing plots against their lives from adversaries. Thus, irrespective of the societal context in which a Muslim resides, there exists a divine mandate to engage with non-Muslims equitably, as well as to treat non-Muslims within a Muslim society with kindness. The true transgressors in this regard are those members of the Zionist security forces and settler who perpetrate violence against Palestinians, the kharijites, and misguided individuals among Muslims who inflict harm upon their fellow non-Muslim citizens, alongside the racist elements and far-right extremists. It is, therefore, the clear  responsibility of every individual possessing even a modicum of integrity to denounce and oppose such actions. [Refer to footnote c]

The discourse surrounding human rights has been explored not only through an academic lens but also from an perspective of Islamic perspective Read below:

A Brief Examination of the Foundations and Frontiers of Human Rights

It is imperative that we collectively confront the scourge of crime and the various manifestations of terror that plague our societies, be they Muslim or non-Muslim. This responsibility is particularly pressing for all nations to unite against the injustices of Zionist oppression, anti-Semitism, and racism. While it is natural to feel frustration in the face of wrongdoing, resorting to vigilantism is an unlawful response, irrespective of the nature of the crime. Such actions are equally reprehensible whether perpetrated by Muslims or non-Muslims. Vigilantism has no place in any nation; thus, under no circumstances should one emulate the settlers in the occupied territories of Palestine or the kharijites in the Sahel and Nigeria.

And Allah knows best.

Verses 163-166 Surah Al-A’raf

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil

Allah, The Most High, said:

And ask them (O Muhammad) about the town that was by the sea, when they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e. Saturday): when their fish came to them openly on the Sabbath day and did not come to them on the day they had no Sabbath. Thus We made a trial of them for they used to rebel. And when a community among them said: “Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy or to punish with a severe torment?” (The preachers) said: “In order to be free from guilt before your Lord (Allah), and perhaps they may fear Allah.” So when they forgot the reminders that had been given to them, We rescued those who forbade evil, but We seized those who did wrong with a severe torment because they used to rebel (disobey Allah). So when they exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, We said to them: “Be you monkeys, despised and rejected.” (It is a severe warning to mankind that they should not disobey what Allah commands them to do, and be far away from what He prohibits them). [Al-A’raf 163-166]

The majority of them transgressed and acted boldly, and openly made that known. One group declared their disapproval and condemnation of such actions, while another group sufficed themselves with the disapproval and condemnation, and said to them:

“Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy or to punish with a severe torment?”

It is as if they were saying: “There is no benefit in admonishing those who have violated Allah’s prohibitions and ignored the advice, instead they have continued their transgressions and rebellion. Indeed, it is inevitable that they will face divine retribution, either through destruction or severe punishment.

So, the admonishers said:

“We admonish and forbid them to be free from guilt (ourselves) before your Lord (Allah), and perhaps they may fear Allah”, in order words so that they abandon their sinful ways. We do not lose hope that they will be guided, as there is a possibility that admonition may resonate and have an impact on them.

This is the greater objective of denouncing wrongdoing – to serve as an excuse (for oneself) and to establish a case against those who are commanded to refrain from such actions, with the hope that Allah may guide them to act in accordance with His commands and prohibitions.

An Excerpt from Tafsir As-Sadi

Some Examples of Well Known Atrocities In History

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

مَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسًا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا

If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. [Al-Ma’idah. 32]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

If a person is bold enough to kill someone who does not deserve to be killed, this implies that he does make a distinction between the one he killed and other than him; rather he would commit this act whenever his evil calls him to that. Therefore, his bold attitude that led him to kill is as if he has killed all humankind. On the other hand, if a person saves a life and does not kill – whilst his soul calls him to do so – due to fear of Allah, this is as if he has saved the lives of all humankind because the fear of Allah he possesses stops him killing one who does not deserve to be killed. [Tafsir As-Sadi]

Africans under Belgian King Leopold II, Jews under Nazis, and some other narratives

Numerous voices have emerged, some affirming and others contesting, regarding the estimated number of Jews who perished under Nazi rule, much like the varying figures regarding the toll of King Leopold’s colonial endeavours on African lives. Whether the figure stands at 6 million Jews, more or less, or 10 million Africans, again subject to debate, the loss of even a single life, judged by any standard other than divine law, is a profound injustice. Both the Nazis and colonial powers have drenched their hands in blood, as have many others throughout history. Thus, the onus of research falls upon you to ascertain the true number of Jews lost to Nazi atrocities and the Africans who suffered under King Leopold’s brutal regime. Yet, the scourge of violence and oppression persists in our current age. Conflicts among Africans often arise from tribal animosities and political affiliations, or are exacerbated by neocolonial interventions, where the greed of external exploiters incites turmoil in African and Asian nations. In a similar vein, with the backing of Christian Zionists, [Footnote a] the Zionist movement has inflicted suffering and death upon Palestinians for over seven decades. The perpetrators of these atrocities in our era are well-known. We can all recall the Rwandan genocide and other conflicts, yet it is essential to remember that Europe itself has a history steeped in brutal wars among themselves before it sought to export its violence through centuries of colonialism. Once again, we reiterate that these contemporary perpetrators are merely the successors of the ancient bloodshed. Herein lie examples of those who have historically reveled in violence.

The Tyrants of Aad

Allah stated that Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, said to his people:

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِينَ

And when you seize, seize you as tyrants.

Meaning, when you want to attack with a whip or sword, you attack like tyrants, completely overpowering and being savagely violent- neither compassionate nor aim to discipline (within divine limits), nor contemplating on the consequences. (1)

Allah gave them great strength and it was obligated to them to use this strength in obedience to Allah, but they became boastful and haughty, and they said:

مَنۡ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً‌ۖ

“Who is mightier than us in strength?” [Fussilat. 15]

They utilised their strength in disobedience to Allah, fruitlessly and foolishly, thus, their Prophet forbade them from that. (2)

Their Prophet forbade them from that because it was done out of oppression. (3)

Fir’awn and His Blind Followers

Allah, The Most High, said:

Verily, Fir’aun (Pharaoh) exalted himself in the land and made its people sects, weakening (oppressing) a group (i.e. Children of Israel) among them, killing their sons, and letting their females live. Verily, he was of the Mufsideen [i.e. those who commit great sins and crimes, oppressors, tyrants, etc.] [Al-Qasas. 4]

The Makers of the Ditch

Allah, The Most High,  said:

Cursed were the makers of the Ditch- the large ditch with the fire, given fuel (in abundance); when they sat around it, watching what they had (ordered to be done) to the believers, who they resented for no reason other than belief in Allah- The Almighty, the Praiseworthy, the One to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and earth. And Allah is a Witness over all things. [Al-Buruj. 4-9]

Cursed were the makers of the Ditch.

This is an invocation against them to be destroyed. The makers of the ditch were disbelievers and there lived amongst them believers, so they wanted to force the believers to accept their religion, but the believers refused. They dug a ditch in the ground, kindled fire in it, sat around it, oppressed the believers and exposed them to the fire; so whoever responded to their orders was released and whoever held onto their faith was casted in the fire. This is an intense act of waging war against Allah and the believers, so Allah cursed, destroyed and promised them punishment, saying:

قُتِلَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأُخۡدُودِ

Cursed were the makers of the ditch.

Then Allah explained about the ditch and its makers, saying:

ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡوَقُودِ
إِذۡ هُمۡ عَلَيۡہَا قُعُودٌ۬
وَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفۡعَلُونَ بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ شُہُودٌ۬

The large ditch with the fire, given fuel (in abundance); when they sat around it, watching what they had (ordered to be done) to the believers.

This is one of the greatest types of despotism and hardheartedness, because they combined between their disbelief in Allah’s signs and willfully denied them, waging war against the believers, tortured them with this agonising torture and were present to witness the believers being casted in the fire. And reality is that they resented the believers for no reason other than a characteristic for which they are to be praised and through which depended their happiness (in this life and the next), which is that they were believers in Allah -The Almighty, The Praiseworthy. (4)

Hajjaj Bin Yusuf Ath-Thaqafee

After Abdullah Bin Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, was murdered, Al-Hajjaaj sent someone to Asma [bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), Abdullah’s mother] to come to him, but she refused to come. He again sent the messenger to her with the message that she must come, otherwise he would bring her forcibly by dragging her by her hair, but she again refused and said: By Allah, I will not come to you until you send one to me who would drag me by pulling my hair. So, he said: Bring me my shoes. He put on his shoes and walked on quickly puffed up with vanity and pride until he came to her and said: How do you find what I have done with the enemy of Allah? She said: I find that you wronged him in this world, whereas he has ruined your afterlife. It has been conveyed to me that you used to call him (Abdullah B. Zubair) as the son of one having two belts. By Allah, I am indeed (a woman) of two belts. One is that with the help of which I used to suspend high the food of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and that of Abu Bakr (making it out of the reach) of animals and, so far as the second belt is concerned, that is the belt which no woman can dispense with. Verily Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) told us that in Thaqif, there would be born a great liar and great murderer. The liar we have seen, and as far as the murderer is concerned, I do not find anyone else besides you. He (Hajjaj) stood up and did not give any reply to her. [Sahih Muslim 2545]

The Mongols

In the year 656 AH/1258 CE, Artughal’s son, Uthman, was born and it is to whom the Ottoman Empire was attributed. It was the year in which the Mongols, led by Hulagu, carried out a military expedition against Baghdad – the capital of the Ottoman Caliphate – which led to catastrophic events and great calamities. Imaam Ibn Katheer [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated, “They (i.e. the Mongols) killed everyone they were able to kill, including men, women, boys, Shaikhs, the elderly and the young men. Many people entered the wells, the habitats of wild animals and the gutters, and they hid for days without appearing. A group of people would gather in the inns and shut the doors, but the Tartars either opened the doors by breaking them or setting them on fire; then they pursued the people who fled to the highest places and killed them on the rooftops until blood flowed in the alleys. Indeed to Allaah we belong and to Him we shall return! Likewise, in the local mosques and the big central mosques, no one escaped from them except the Jewish and Christian citizens of the Muslim land, and those who sought refuge with them”. (5)

American Colonialists

The 13 American colonies’ population grew from about 2,000 to 2.4 million between 1625 and 1775 while displacing Native Americans from eastern North America. After the colonies declared independence in 1776 from Great Britain and formed the US, the settlers started to move west, clashing with and eradicating the Apache, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chinook, Navajo and Sioux tribes. Some of the names today are sadly used for American warfare helicopters and ubiquitous sport utility vehicles. The national holiday, Thanksgiving, celebrated in November, is traced to the 1620s when European settlers invited Native Americans to a feast. The settlers later killed the population and gave thanks to God for allowing them to slaughter the “savages.” The surviving descendants of Native American tribes live in poverty on federally recognized Indian reservations across the US. Almost 100 million indigenous people in the Western Hemisphere have been killed or died prematurely because of the Europeans and their descendants in five centuries, according to David E. Stannard in his book, American Holocaust: The Conquest of the New World. Around 12 million indigenous people died within present US geographical boundaries between 1492 and 1900, according to Russell Thornton in American Indian Holocaust and Survival: A Population History since 1492. Despite having unalienable rights — life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – as enshrined in the American Declaration of Independence, not all in the new colonies were considered equal. The colonies had a system of slavery, which European settlers carried as a practice into the Americas from the Old World, despite English Protestants praising themselves as Puritans. A conservative estimate of 35 million men, women and children were brought from Africa to the New World between the 16th and 19th centuries. Around 12.5 million of those brought to North America were used as free labor in fields and worked under grueling conditions, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database. The systematic repression of Africans continues to the present day in the US government application of laws, health and education. (6)

Colonialists In Australia: Professor Lyndall Ryan and her research team has found that there were at least 270 frontier massacres over 140 years of Australian history, as part of a state-sanctioned and organised attempts to eradicate First Nations people. For Ryan’s work, a massacre is defined as the deliberate killing of six or more defenceless people in one operation. If you investigate some of these massacres in depth you can see how systematic they were. Ryan’s work is in no means comprehensive as many massacres were not documented and many others covered up. Because of colonial genocidal actions like state-sanctioned massacres, the First Nations population went from an estimated 1-1.5 million before invasion to less than 100,000 by the early 1900s. (7)

Finally, it is important to reflect upon the tragic events that have unfolded in Palestine, a situation that has persisted for over seventy years. We continue to condemn the recent instances of violence perpetrated by some members of Netanyahu’s Zionist forces, but we must also unequivocally denounce any acts of violence committed by Muslims – whether Hamas or other than them- on October 7th- against unarmed civilians and non-combatants who identify with Judaism. Here we’ll mention some atrocities committed by some Zionist groups against Palestinians since 1948.

The Deir Yassin Massacre: Took place on April 9, 1948, near Jerusalem, during which between 107 to 254 Palestinians were massacred at the hands of the extremist “Stern” gang.

The Nasr al-Din Massacre: Took place in April 1948. Al-Lajjun Massacre: Took place on April 13, 1948, in a Palestinian Arab village in the Jenin District, where the Zionist Haganah gang attacked it and killed 13 people.

The Saliha Massacre: Took place in May 1948, during which 75 Palestinians were massacred.

The Abu Shusha Massacre: Took place on May 14, 1948, near the village of Deir Yassin, and claimed the lives of (50) citizens, including women, men, children, and the elderly.

The Beit Daras Massacre: Took place in northeastern Gaza on May 21, 1948.

The Tantura Massacre: Took place on May 22, 1948, in the occupied city of Haifa, and claimed the lives of about (200) Palestinians.

The Lydda Massacre: Took place on July 12, 1948, in the occupied city of Lydda, and resulted in the massacre of about (500) Palestinians, including (150) who were massacred inside the city’s Grand Mosque. The Zionists threw many of them alive into the town’s wells.

The Dawayima Massacre: Took place on October 29, 1948, when a battalion from the terrorist “Lehi” organization led by Moshe Dayan attacked the village and then began searching homes and shooting at its residents. Entire families were exterminated in the massacre, which resulted in the killing of 200 men, women, and children.

The massacres by some Zionist groups did not stop after the Nakba of 1948, but rather their frequency, intensity, and brutality increased in light of the use of more lethal and destructive weapons. Among the most prominent of these massacres were: The Sharafat Massacre, which took place in February 1951, in which 11 Palestinians were massacred, and the rest of the village’s people were displaced. The Bethlehem Massacre took place in January 1952, in which 10 Palestinians were massacred. The Qibya Massacre took place on October 14, 1953, in the village of Qibya, east of Jerusalem, during which (67) Palestinians were massacred, most of whom were women and children, and during which 56 homes were destroyed. The Qalqilya Massacre took place on October 10, 1956, when the occupation forces attacked citizens in the city of Qalqilya in the West Bank, during which about seventy citizens were massacred.

The Kafr Qasem Massacre took place on October 29, 1956, in which 49 Palestinians were massacred, including 11 children, when they were all returning home from work. The Khan Yunis Massacre took place on November 3 and 12, 1956, in which between 280 and 500 Palestinians were massacred.

In 1970, Bahr al-Baqar Primary School and Abu Zaabal factories were attacked, killing more than 150 Egyptian students and workers. In 1980, the extremist Jewish organization Kach attempted to blow up Al-Aqsa Mosque, and a shipment of explosives weighing 120 kg was discovered. The Sabra and Shatila massacre took place in September 1982. This massacre lasted three days, and its direct perpetrators were members of the Lebanese Phalange forces allied with the Zionists led by Ariel Sharon. The Ibrahimi Mosque Massacre took place on February 25, 1994, when a Zionist named “Barog Goldstein” stormed the Ibrahimi Mosque in the city of Hebron, and fired bullets and bombs at the worshipers. This massacre resulted in the massacre of 29 Palestinians. The Qana Massacre took place on April 18, 1995. [8]

Listen to what Prince Turki Al-Faisal – may Allah preserve him- said about the Zionists and Hamas:

What is presented in this article does not mean that those mentioned are the only ones guilty of brutality, rather, there have been many other incidents throughout history. Whoever carries out research will come across a lot on this subject matter. Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“Every sin is a legacy inherited from a nation that was destroyed by Allah Almighty. Taking more than one is entitled to is a legacy from the people of Shu’ayb, peace be upon him. The corruption and arrogance displayed on earth are inherited from the people of Pharaoh, and the pride and tyranny are legacies from the people of Prophet Hud, peace be upon him. Thus, the sinner is adorned in the garments of these nations, which are enemies of Allah”. [Ad-Da’u Wad Dawa’u. page 142]

What did that one say and what does this one say?!

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

What Did Fir’awn and The Leaders of His People Say?

Allah, The Most High, said:

The chiefs of Fir’aun’s (Pharaoh’s) people said: “Will you leave Musa (Moses) and his people to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon you and your gods?” He said: “We will kill their sons, and let live their women, and we have indeed irresistible power over them.” (Al-A’raf 127)

What does Netanyahu say?!

On Saturday 28th October, Prime Minister Benjamin ‘Netanyahu’ Mileikowsky announced in Hebrew: “You must remember what Amalek has done to you, says our Holy Bible. And we do remember.” Of all the thousands of verses in the Old Testament that Mileikowsky could have quoted, he chose the ones pertaining to genocide of the Amalekites in Deuteronomy 25: 17-19. In this passage, we read the following: “You shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget!” (1)

An Unmatched Authority That Would Have Completely Blinded and Corrupted The Boastful In Our Era

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

An Unmatched Authority That Made the Grateful Humble and Would Have Completely Blinded and Corrupted The Boastful, Opinionated and Ungrateful in Our Era

Allah, The Most High, said:

He (Sulayman) said: “O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne (Bilqees’s throne) before they come to me surrendering themselves in obedience?” An Ifrit (strong) from the jinns said: “I will bring it to you before you rise from your place (council). And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work.” One (a person) with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: “I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!” then when [Sulaiman (Solomon)] saw it placed before him, he said: “This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his ownself, and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly! My Lord is Ghaniyun Kareem [(a)] [An Naml 38-40]

Brothers and sisters, lets reflect upon what noble Prophet Sulayman, peace be upon him, said when he saw Bilqees’s throne, may Allah have mercy upon her, was placed before him within the twinkling of an eye?

Allah said and he said:

هَـٰذَا مِن فَضۡلِ رَبِّى لِيَبۡلُوَنِىٓ ءَأَشۡكُرُ أَمۡ أَكۡفُرُ‌ۖ

This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful!

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Meaning, “to test me through it”. He was not beguiled by his kingdom, authority and power as is the habit of the ignorant kings; rather he knew that this was a test from his Lord, this, he was afraid of not being thankful for these blessings. Then he clarified that being grateful to Allah does not benefit Allah; rather its benefits return to the grateful one, this, he said:

وَمَن شَكَرَ فَإِنَّمَا يَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦ‌ۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ رَبِّى غَنِىٌّ۬ كَرِيمٌ۬

“And whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly! My Lord is Ghani [Rich – Free of all wants], Kareem [Bountiful]”

Meaning, Allah is not in need of a person’s deeds, and He is generous, bestows abundant good to both a grateful person and an ungrateful person, except that being grateful for the blessings He bestows leads to more blessings and being ungrateful leads to its decrease. [An Excerpt from Tafseer As-Sadi]

[(a)]: [Al-Ghani]: The Independent One Who is free of all need. The One Who has no need whatsoever of the creation. The One Who is free from anypoverty or need. The One in Whose Hand are the treasures of the heavens and the earth, and of this world and the hereafter. [Al-Kareem]: The Bountiful, The Generous One. Abundant in good. The One Who causes and makes easy every good. And Who bestows generously. The One so generous that He even bestows favors upon those who reject His favours, and use them as a means to disobey Him. Ignorant and Unjust!

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): “My Lord has honoured me.” But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me!” [Al-Fajr. 15-16]

Meaning: When tried with richness and wealth, and given in abundance, he says that his lord has honoured him due to what he has been given. And when afflicted with poverty, he says that his lord has degraded him. However, this view of his is incorrect; rather he should praise Allah in both circumstances-in times of poverty and richness. (1)

The human being is ignorant and unjust. He has no knowledge of final outcomes. He thinks that the situation in which he finds himself is to continue and will never cease; that the kind treatment and blessings he receives from Allah in the worldly life is an indication that he is honoured by Allah, and that he is one close to Him. However, not everyone who receives Allah’s blessings in this worldly life is one honoured by Allah, and not everyone whom Allah afflicts with poverty is one humiliated by Allah; rather riches and poverty, scarcity and abundance are a trial and a test by way of which Allah makes known those who will show gratitude and those who will exercise patience. (2)

I see the spots where afflictions will take place

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Usamah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Once the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood at the top of a (lookout from upon one) castle amongst the castles (or the high buildings) of Medina and said, “Do you see what I see? (No doubt) I see the spots where afflictions will take place among your houses (and these afflictions will be) as numerous as the spots where raindrops fall.” [Al-Bukhari 1878 and Muslim 2885]

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, stated in his explanation of this hadith:

The prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, possessed miracles, and among them is this one: The prophet stood at the top of a lookout, meaning, a high castle among the lookouts of Madinah. There were lookouts over there (i.e. Madinah) and they are strong towers where they would observe the enemy’s (movements, circumstances, situation). They would climb up these towers to watch the approaching enemy.

He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, climbed onto one of them and said: “Do you see what I see?” They replied: “No”. (This) is because they cannot see what the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah, sees; this is from [خصائصه ] and [معجزاته]. [Footnote a]

This (i.e. the statement “do you see what I see”) is a warning to the Ummah. He said: “(No doubt) I see the spots where afflictions will take place among your houses”, upon or close to your homes, because Fitna (affliction, temptation, etc) will engulf the people in their houses. This serves as a warning from him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that there will be Fitan (afflictions) that will reach the people.

What is common (or what normally takes place) is that when people stay in their homes, they are safe from Fitan, but when they exit them, they are exposed to Fitan, it afflicts them; however, the houses are not safeguraded from this (specific fitna). These are Fitan that will reach the people in their homes, while they are dwelling in them. This – and Allah knows best- is during the end times when media, satellite broadcasting, have advanced, as they say that evil can easily spread through these channels, reaching homes via screens and devices that relate events. The person looks at it while he is in his home- while he is at the furthest region of the earth- as if he is present at the scene. [Footnote b]

The Messenger does not speak out of desire, and indeed, this is something that will occur, and Fitan will invade the homes, entering them. This serves as a warning- a notification from him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to warn people. When these widespread Fitan arise, a person must be vigilant and protect his home from these Fitan. This carries difficulty, but with patience and hoping for Allah’s reward, Allah will aid him. [Paraphrased: Sharh Kitab Al-Fitan Wal Hawadith pages 18-19]

Kufr and Demogoguery

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Alla, The Most High, said:

He [Fir’awn] said, “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Musa? Then verily, we can produce magic the like thereof, so appoint a meeting between us and you, which neither we, nor you shall fail to keep, in an open wide place where both shall have a just and equal chance (and beholders could witness the competition)”. [Musa] said, “Your appointed meeting is the day of the festival, and let the people assemble when the sun has risen (forenoon)”. So Fir’awn withdrew, devised his plot and then came back. Musa (Moses) said to them, “Woe unto you! Invent not a lie against Allah, lest He should destroy you completely by a torment. And surely, he who invents a lie (against Allah) will fail miserably”. [Surah Taa Haa. 57-61]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“He (Fir’awn) claimed that the signs Musa, peace be upon him, that showed him were nothing more than sorcery and illusions and that the aim behind them was to drive them from their land. Fir’awn’s statements were intended to influence his people because people are naturally attached to their homelands and it is difficult for them to abandon them. He told them that this was Musa’s goal so that they would hate and oppose him”. [1]

Allah said:

They said: “O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw?” [Musa (Moses)] said: “Nay, throw you (first)!” Then behold, their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast. So Musa (Moses) conceived a fear in himself. We (Allah) said: “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. “And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never be successful, no matter whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.” So the magicians fell down prostrate. They said: “We believe in the Lord of Harun (Aaron) and Musa (Moses).” [Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] said: “Believe you in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission? Verily! He is your chief who taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you on the trunks of date-palms, and you shall surely know which of us [I (Fir’aun – Pharaoh) or the Lord of Musa (Moses) (Allah)] can give the severe and more lasting torment.” They said: “We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world. “Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults, and the magic to which you did compel us. And Allah is better as regards reward in comparison to your [Fir’aun’s] reward, and more lasting (as regards punishment in comparison to your punishment).” [Surah Taa Haa. Ayaat 65-73]

Allah informs us in Surah Al-A’raaf Ayaat 123-126 that when the sorcerers abandoned their misguidance and accepted Prophet Musa’s message, Fir’awn said to them:

ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُم

You have believed in him (Musa) before I give you permission].

Meaning, Fir’awn -the cruel and opinionated judge- considered himself the only one deserving of passing judgements on the statements of the people and in the assemblies. It was established and accepted by his people that he was the one to be followed and no one was allowed to oppose his judgements and statements. Thus, contradicting his judgements and statements is tantamount to bad behaviour and disrespect. [2]

Allah said:

Fir’aun (Pharaoh) said: “Leave me to kill Musa (Moses), and let him call his Lord (to stop me from killing him)! I fear that he may change your religion, or that he may cause mischief to appear in the land!” [Ghaafir. 26]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Allah, The Most High, said:

[وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ – Fir’aun (Pharaoh) said] – Meaning, with haughtiness and tyranny, while deluding his foolish people;

Leave me to kill Musa (Moses), and let him call his Lord (to stop me from killing him)!]

This was his claim that had it not been for his consideration of the wishes of his people, he would have killed Musa and that (Musa’s) supplication to his Lord would not have prevented him from that.

Fir’awn then mentioned what made him want to kill Musa and that he is a sincere adviser to his people, and that he wished to remove mischief from the land. Allah, The Most High, stated that Fir’awn said:

إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يُبَدِّلَ دِينَكُمْ أَوْ أَنْ يُظْهِرَ فِي الْأَرْضِ الْفَسَادَ

I fear that he (Musa) may change your religion, or that he may cause mischief to appear in the land!

This is the most amazing the affair can be! The most evil one among the creation gives advice to the people against the best among the creation. This is (nothing but) disguised falsehood and propaganda, which cannot seize except the intellects of those (people) about whom Allaah stated:

فَاسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهُ فَأَطَاعُوهُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ

Thus he Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] befooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. Verily, they were ever a people who were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). [Az-Zukhruf. 54] [3]

Allah said:

And (when) it is said to those who are pious, “What is it that your Lord has sent down?” They say: “That which is good.” For those who do good in this world, there is good, and the home of the Hereafter will be better. And excellent indeed will be the home (i.e. Paradise) of the pious. Adn (Eden) Paradise (Gardens of Eternity) which they will enter, under which rivers flow, they will have therein all that they wish. Thus Allah rewards the pious. Those whose lives the angels take while they are in a pious state, saying (to them): Salamun ‘Alaikum (peace be on you) enter you Paradise, because of (the good) which you used to do (in the world).” [An-Nahl. 30-32]

And (when) it is said to those who are pious, “What is it that your Lord has sent down?” They say: “That which is good.”

Abu Salih narrated from Ibn Abbas who said: “The Quraish polytheists sent sixteen men to the main mountain roads during the days of hajj and dispersed four men on each road to hinder people from believing in Allah’s Messenger, saying, ‘Whoever comes to you asking about Muhammad, then some of you should say, he is a poet, and some of you should say, he is a Soothsayer, and some of you should say, he is a mad man, so it is better that neither you see him nor he sees you. And when the people come to us, we will agree with what you said to them on the roads’.

When this reached Allah’s Messenger, he also sent four believers on each main road – and amongst them were Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud – and commanded them to belie what the Quraish were saying. So, when the people would go past the polytheists, they said what they said about the Messenger, but the Muslims would say, “You have lied, rather he calls to the truth, commands good and forbids evil”. So they said, “What is the good he calls to?” They said:

For those who do good in this world]- Meaning, the good of “none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, the best of deeds in reward and that which they are blessed with of its good and obedience to Allah; [وَلَدَارُ ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ خَيۡرٌ۬‌ۚ – and the home of the Hereafter will be better.

Meaning, nobility in the sight of Allah in the Hereafter and paradise. [4]

Verses 94-95 Surah Al-A’raf

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said: said:

And We sent no Prophet unto any town (and they denied him), but We seized its people with suffering from extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss of health and calamities, so that they might humiliate themselves (and repent to Allah). Then We changed the evil for the good, until they increased in number and in wealth, and said: “Our fathers were touched with evil (loss of health and calamities) and with good (prosperity, etc.).” So We seized them of a sudden while they were unaware. [Al-A’raaf 94-95]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Meaning, they said: “This is something normal that has not ceased since the earlier and later generations and is still happening among the later generations. At times they were in a state of ease and at other times they encountered hardships- at times there was happiness and at other times there was sorrow, according to the alternation of time periods”.

They thought that neither is there an admonition or reminder to pay attention to nor that this is Istidraj (i.e. being gradually led to destruction while they persist in sin), until when they rejoiced in what they were given and this worldly life became the most important thing in their minds, Allah seized them with punishment.

“Suddenly while they were unaware”– Meaning, it never occurred to them that they may encounter destruction, and they thought that they possessed full control over what Allah bestowed on them and that neither will they cease to exist nor leave it behind.

The Power That Poses Great Danger to Its Seeker

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Power That Poses Great Danger to Its Seeker: A Prophetic Warning on Authority and Accountability

Abdur-Rahman Bin Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said:

“O Abdur-Rahman! Do not seek to be a ruler, for if you are given authority on your demand, you will be held responsible for it, but if you are given it without asking, you will be helped (by Allah). If you ever take an oath to do something and later on find that something else is better, then you should expiate your oath and do what is better”. [Al-Bukhari 7146]

The person who pursues authority and attains it will not find assistance. It is well known that holding authority comes with difficulties, so if one does not receive help from Allah, they will become ensnared by it and consequently lose both their worldly life and the afterlife. Hence, a sensible person refrains from seeking authority. However, if they are deserving and it is bestowed upon them without their request, then the truthful and trustworthy [Messenger] has assured them that Allah will assist them. [2]

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

You people will crave leadership and it will be a thing of regret on the Day of Resurrection. What a nice wet nurse it is, yet how evil is the weaning!” [Al-Bukhari 7148]

“Leadership” includes the Greater leadership, which is the Khilafah, and the smaller one which is the governorship over some countries (or province). This is information given (by the Prophet about something) before its occurrence, and it has occurred as he stated.

“It will be a thing of regret on the Day of Resurrection” for those who did not act by what is obligated regarding it.

“What a nice wet nurse, yet how evil is the weaning”. Ad-Dawudi said, “A nice wet nurse in this worldly life, yet evil in the hereafter as one will be held responsible. It mirrors premature weaning, resulting in ruin (harm)”. Others said, “A nice wet nurse due to the attainment of status, wealth, influence, and the fulfilment of physical and illusory pleasures (that may lead one to be fully distracted by the material world), yet how evil is the weaning when separated from it by death or other means, and the consequences that follow in the hereafter.” [3]

Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Two men from my tribe and I came to the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; one of the two men said to the Prophet: “O Allah’s Messenger! Appoint me as a governor,” and so did the second. The Prophet said:

“We do not assign the authority of ruling to those who ask for it, nor to those who are eager to have it.” [Al-Bukhaari 7149]

Abdur Rahman Bin Shumasa, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: I came to A’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, to inquire something from her. She said, “From which people are you?” I said, “I am from the people of Egypt”. She said, “What was the behaviour of your governor towards you in this war of yours?” I said, “We did not experience anything bad from him. If the camel of a man from us died, he would bestow on him a camel. If any one of us lost his slave, he would give him a slave. If anybody was in need of the basic necessities of life, he would provide them with provisions”. She said, “Behold! the treatment that was meted out to my brother, Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr, does not prevent me from telling you what I heard from Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of allaah be upon him]. He said in this house of mine, ‘O Allah! Whoever (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is hard upon them, be hard upon him, and who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is kind to them, be kind to him'”. [Sahih Muslim 1828]

Regarding the statement of the Prophet: “O Allah! Whoever (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is hard upon them, be hard upon him, and who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is kind to them, be kind to him”, Imam An-Nawawi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “This is one of the strongest rebukes against causing hardship for the people and the greatest urge to be kind to them”. [4]

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: One day Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood among us (to deliver a sermon). He talked about the misappropriation of booty, and declared it to be a serious matter and a grave sin. Then he said, “I shouldn’t find that any of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a growling camel mounted on his neck, and should appeal to me for help saying, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’ and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I already communicated to you’. I shouldn’t find that any of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a bleating ewe mounted on his neck, and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’ and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I conveyed to you’. I shouldn’t find that one of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a person crying loudly mounted on his neck, and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’, and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I conveyed to you’. I shouldn’t find that any one of you should come on the Day of Judgment with fluttering clothes wrapped round his neck and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’, and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I conveyed to you’. I shouldn’t find that any of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a heap of gold and silver placed on his neck and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’, and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allaah at all; I already conveyed to you (the warning from the Almighty)'”. [Sahih Muslim 1831]

Regarding the statement of the Prophet, “I cannot avail you against Allah at all”, Imam An-Nawawi [may Allah have mercy upon him] stated that Al-Qadhi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said that this means “(Cannot avail you against Allah) with regards to forgiveness and intercession, except by the will of Allah]”. This statement of the Prophet is (a manifestation of) anger towards this person – at first – due to his wrong deed, then thereafter the Prophet will intercede for all the Muwahhideen [i.e. those who died upon the creed of pure Islamic monotheism]. [5]

Adee Bin Amirah Al-Kindi, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I heard Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say, “Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position of authority and he conceals from us a needle or something smaller than that, it would be misappropriation (of public funds) and will (have to) produce it on the Day of Judgment”. The narrator says: “A dark-complexioned man from the Ansar stood up – I can visualise him still – and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! Take back from me your assignment’. He said, ‘What has happened to you?’ The man said, ‘I have heard you say so and so’. He said, ‘I say that (even) now: Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position of authority, he should bring everything, big or small, and whatever he is given therefrom he should take, and he should restrain himself from taking that which is forbidden'”. [Sahih Muslim 1833]

The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Any man whom Allah has given authority to look after the affairs of a people and he dies whilst not looking after them [in the manner obligated by Allah and His Messenger], he will not smell the scent of paradise”. [Sahih Al-Bukhari. 7150]

Imam Muhammad Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen [may Allah have mercy upon him] said:

This does not (only) refer to the Muslim ruler, his assistant or a minister, or the elders of a people; rather it applies even to a man in his house. If he dies and did not look after his family (in the manner obligated by Allah and His Messenger), Allah will prevent him from smelling the scent of paradise. And those who give their families games that corrupt manners and destroy belief, there is no doubt that they have not looked after their families (in the manner obligated by Allah and His Messenger in this affair). If they die whilst being upon this state, it is feared that Allah will prevent them from smelling the scent of paradise”. [6]

Imam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “The sinners [i.e. those who die while committing sins lesser than shirk] are under the will of Allah. If Allah wishes, He will either punish them or forgive them straight away, or He enters them into hell for some time and paradise thereafter, just as Allah said:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٲلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ

Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases. [Surah An-Nisaa’ Aayah 48]

Obedience to The Rulers In Good and Not to Rebel Even When They Are Oppressive

Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Indeed, you will see Atharatan after me and affairs you’ll disapprove; they [i.e. the people] said, ‘What do you command us O Allah’s Messenger?’ He said, ‘Fulfil their rights [i.e. the rulers] and ask Allah for your rights'”.

Al-Allamah Zaid Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali [may Allah have mercy upon him] said:

This authentic hadith is related to the affair of the rulers- during the end of time – when they will give precedence to themselves through enjoyment of the worldly things and those under their authority will face harm, something of oppression and tyranny; so the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] guided and directed the people to fulfil the rights of the rulers; obey and listen to them in that which is good- whether it is during a time in which one is enthusiastic [to listen and obey them in what is good] or feeling lackadaisical- perform Jihad behind their banner against the enemies of the religion, establish the prayer and behave in a manner obligated by the Islamic legislation. They should not rebel against the ruler just because he is a sinner or an oppressor, nor refrain from giving him the rights obligated on them to give him; rather they should fulfil his rights just as the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] commanded them, saying, “Fulfil their rights”.

Therefore, the ruler has rights that should be fulfilled by his subjects and the subjects also have rights to be fulfilled by the ruler. It is obligated on the ruler to fulfil their rights and it is obligated on them to fulfil his rights. However, if he [i.e. the ruler] falls short in something related to their rights, it is not permissible for them to [deliberately] fall short in fulfilling his rights. And due to the great importance of rulership and the rulers, indeed the Prophet commanded them to fulfil the obligation of As-Sam’i wat-Taa’ah [i.e. to listen and obey the ruler in good], refrain from disobedience [when commanded to do something good], supplicate to Allah to make their affairs easy and change their state of affairs to that which is good, aid them to fulfil their needs and those affairs they cannot do without.

This hadith contains a miracle of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and that is the fact that he clearly stated that during the end of time, the rulers will give precedence to themselves with something of wealth and worldly enjoyment, and others will be deprived of it. Also, there will be affairs which the people of sound judgement will reject. [So], when this era comes, it is obligated on them – those under the rulership of a Muslim ruler – to listen and obey in that which is good, fulfil the rights that have been obligated on them to fulfil and seek their rights from Allah – meaning: they supplicate to Allah to aid them in fulfilling their needs and facilitate them with ease in their affairs. And Allaah knows best. [7]

Strength and Security is Achieved Behind The Ruler

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him] said:

The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, ‘Verily, the leader is a shield behind whom they fight and he protects them. If he commands (people to) fear Allah [The Exalted] and justice, then he will have a reward. If he commands something else, then it will be against him’”. [Ṣaḥih Muslim 1841]

Regarding the Prophet’s statement, “The leader is a shield”, Imam An-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“He is like a shelter because he prevents the enemy from harming the Muslims, prevent the people from (harming) one another, protects the Muslim nation and the people fear his authority. And the meaning of the Prophet’s [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] statement, “Behind whom they fight”, meaning, alongside him they fight against the disbelievers (i.e. those at war with his country), the rebels, the khaarijites and all the perpetrators of corruption and oppression”. [8]

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan [may Allah preserve him] stated:

Towards the end of the Messenger’s life, he admonished the people as occurs in the hadeeth of Irbad Ibn Sariyah [may Allah be pleased with him] who said, ‘The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] led us in prayer one day, then turned his face towards us and delivered a powerful admonition that made our hearts fearful and our eyes tearful. So, a man said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah! It is as if it were a farewell admonition, so what do you enjoin upon us?’ He said, ‘I advise you to fear Allaah and to listen and obey even if a slave is a leader over you. Verily, the one who lives among you after me will see a lot of differences, so adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khulafaa- adhere to it and bite onto that with your molar teeth (i.e. adhere to it firmly), and avoid the newly invented matters in the religion, because indeed every newly invented matter in the religion is an innovation in religion and every innovation in religion is misguidance'”.

In this command, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded us to fear Allah. At-Taqwah is a comprehensive word that covers all good qualities. And the meaning of Taqwah is a ‘means of protection between yourself and what you fear will harm you’. It is what shields you from danger, such as (something used) as a means of protection between your foot and the excessive heat on the ground, or (something) placed as a means of protection between you and an injurious thing, or a shield placed as means of protection between you and a weapon, or )something) placed as a means of protection between you and the cold or the heat. This (i.e. above examples) are related to tangible things. As for Taqwah (in the divine revelation it means) to protect yourself from the Anger of Allah, His punishment and the fire of hell, by carrying out His commands and keeping away from His Prohibitions. You cannot be protected from the punishment of Allah, His Anger and the Fire of Hell by fortresses, armies and garments; rather you can only be protected through Fear of Allah [Glorified and Exalted be He] by carrying out Allah’s commands and keeping away from His Prohibitions.

Leadership cannot be accomplished except by way of Sam’i wat Taa’ah (i.e. to listen to the Ruler and being obedient to him) even if he is an Abyssinian slave and does not command a person to disobey Allah. Therefore, the Leader of the Muslims is to be obeyed because there is an overriding benefit for the Muslims in doing so, in order to bring about unity. However, the exception is what the Messenger stated that ‘There is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator’. Therefore, the ruler is not obeyed in disobedience to Allah, but he is obeyed in that which is in opposition to sin. However, this does not mean that we come out and rebel if he commands disobedience; rather we do not obey him in sin, but we obey him in those affairs that do not involve sin'”. [9]

The Shaikh also stated:

Allah, The Most High, said:

وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمُ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡ هَـٰذَا بَلَدًا ءَامِنً۬ا وَٱرۡزُقۡ أَهۡلَهُ ۥ مِنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٲتِ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ مِنۡہُم بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ‌ۖ

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said, “My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day.” [Surah Al-Baqarah. Ayah 126]

Indeed, he (Ibrahim- peace and blessings be upon him) gave priority to security over seeking sustenance because security is a necessity. Security is a necessity and the people cannot enjoy sustenance alongside fear; rather sustenance cannot be reached in the presence of fear. This is what the enemies desire- those who try to destabilise Muslim societies. They wish to disassociate the Muslims from their unity behind their Muslim rulers. This is what they desire – and they do not desire good advice (rectification etc) for the Muslims – in the name of fulfilling beneficial affairs, rectification, removal of oppression, and the like. All of this is lies and pretenses because if rulership slips away chaos will be at large, corruption will spread and the beneficial affairs which they say will be fulfilled will be non-existent. Corruption will be at large and there will not be rectification. Therefore, for this reason, there has to be rulership upon which the Muslims unite. Even if (such rulership) has shortcomings and negligence, the (people) should exercise patience because there is a prevention of that which is more severe and harmful in exercising patience. Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“It is not known of a group that rose against their Muslim Ruler, except that their state of affairs after his removal was eviler than their state of affairs whilst he was present”. This is something experienced at present! The rulers and heads of state who have been removed, what is the state of affairs of their countries after they were (removed)? There has not ceased to be fear, anxiety, chaos, bloodshed, etc. [10]

Supplicating For The Rulers

Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “I hold that the leader of the believers is to be obeyed (in good) in private and public, in my times of hardship and ease, in my times of enthusiasm and when I dislike doing something (i.e. something that’s not unlawful, but one does not like to do it, however he must do it in obedience to the ruler), and when others are given precedence over me. Indeed, I supplicate to Allah – night and day – for him to be successful and guided”. [11]

Abdus Samad Bin Yazid Al-Baghdadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: I heard Al-Fudayl Bin Iyaad, may Allah have mercy upon him, saying, “If I had a supplication that would be accepted, I would not make it except for the leader”. It was said to him, “O father of Ali! Why is that?” He said, “When I make it for myself, it would be only for me, but if I make it for the leader, the rectification (or righteousness) of the leader would consequently result in the rectification of the people and the country”. It was said to him, “O father of Ali! How is that? Explain this to us”. He said, “As for the wellbeing of the land, if the people are safe from the ruler’s tyranny, they will develop abandoned areas and settle in the land. And with regards to the rectification of the people, one observes the affair of a people among the ignoramuses and says, ‘They have been distracted by the pursuit of livelihood rather than seeking what will benefit them with regards to learning the Qur’an and other things’. So, he gathers them together in a house – fifty in number, less or more, and says to a man, ‘You have what will make your affair upright and teach these people their religion’. Then you’ll see what Allah, The Mighty and Majestic, brings forth from among them that would make the land righteous (and prosperous, thrive, flourish, etc) and that would return to them (i.e. they’ll receive its benefits). This would be the rectification of the people and the country”. Imam Ibn Al-Mubarak, may Allah have mercy upon him, kissed Imam Fudayl’s forehead and said, “O teacher of goodness! Who else (i.e. among us) would be able to (say or do) this better than you?!” [12]
