Verses 1-3 Surah Ibrahim

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

Alif-Laam-Raa. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’an, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad) in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness by their Lord’s Leave to the Path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise. Allah to Whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth! And woe unto the disbelievers from a severe torment. Those who prefer the life of this world instead of the Hereafter, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah (i.e. Islam) and seek crookedness therein – They are far astray. [Ibraaheem. 1-3]

Alif-Lam-Ra. (This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad) in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness by their Lord’s Leave.

Imam Ash-Shanqeetee, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Allah, The Most High, clarified in this noble verse that He sent down this great Book unto His Prophet in order that he may remove mankind from the darkness of disbelief and misguidance and (enter them) into the light of Iman and guidance. The meaning of this verse has been made clear in other verses, such as the saying of Allah:

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُنَزِّلُ عَلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦۤ ءَايَـٰتِۭ بَيِّنَـٰتٍ۬ لِّيُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ‌ۚ

It is He Who sends down manifest Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) to His slave (Muhammad) that He may bring you out from darkness into light]. [Al-Hadid. 9]

Indeed, Allah clarified in this verse that none can be removed from darkness and (entered) into light except by His permission, as He stated:

بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهِم

By their Lord’s Leave.

This has been made clear in other verses, such as the saying of Allah:

وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ

We sent no Messenger, but to be obeyed by Allah’s Leave. [Nisaa. 64]

Also the saying of Allah:

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفۡسٍ أَن تُؤۡمِنَ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ

It is not for any person to believe, except by the Leave of Allaah] [Yunus. 100] [1]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Allah, The Most High, informed (us) that He revealed His Book unto His Messenger Muhammad for the benefit of the creation, so that they maybe be removed from the darkness of ignorance, disbelief, evil manners and all types of disobedience, (and entered into) the light of knowledge, Iman and good manners.

And regarding Allah’s statement:

بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهِم

By their Lord’s Leave.

Meaning, they cannot reach the goal of that which is pleasing to Allah, except by Allah’s Will and Help. So in this there is an exhortation for the servants to seek help from their Lord. Then Allah explained (the meaning of the) light to which this Book guides to, saying:

إِلَىٰ صِرَٲطِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَمِيد

To the Path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise.

The path that leads to the abode of honour (i.e. paradise), which (is achieved) through knowledge of the truth and acting upon it.

And regarding Allah’s statement:

ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَمِيدِ

The All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise;

(which is stated) after the mention of the path leading to Him: in this is an demonstration that the one who follows the straight path is given might by Allah and he is a strong person, even if there are no helpers for him except Allah. He is praiseworthy in his affairs and will achieve a good end. This also demonstrates that Allah’s path is the greatest proof that He, The Most High, possesses Perfect Attributes and Lofty Descriptions, and that what He has appointed for His slaves is mighty authority. He is praised in His Statements, Actions and Rulings. He alone is described with all the perfect Names and Attributes, the only one worthy of worship through those acts of worship (He has prescribed), which are the dignified signposts of the straight path.

And just as He is the owner of the kingdom of the heavens and the earth-The Creator, The Sustainer, The Controller of the affairs of the universe- also, He has religious rulings for His slaves because He is their Owner, and it does not befit His (Wisdom, Majesty, Glory etc) that He leaves them Suda [neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by Him].

After Allah clarified the evidences and proofs, He then made a promise to the one who does not pay attention, saying:

وَوَيۡلٌ۬ لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ مِنۡ عَذَابٍ۬ شَدِيد

And woe unto the disbelievers from a severe torment.

Then Allah described them, saying:

ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡتَحِبُّونَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا عَلَى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ

Those who prefer the life of this world instead of the Hereafter

They make it a duty and are satisfied with it, whilst being heedless of the afterlife. [وَيَصُدُّونَ – And they hinder] mankind [ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ– From the Path of Allah] which Allah has appointed for His slaves, clarified in His Books and conveyed through the speech of His Messengers.

Thus, these people have indeed turned away from their Protector through enmity and waging war against Him.

And seek crookedness therein (i.e. in Allah’s Religion)].

That is: They are eager to ridicule and make it look repugnant, in order to make people flee from it; however Allah will not allow that to happen, rather He made His religion uppermost even though the disbelievers may hate it. (2)

They desire that Allah’s path should become crooked, swaying towards (corruption) and deviated from the right course, even though it is self-evident -neither can it be harmed by the one who opposes it nor by the one who forsakes it. [Qurratul Ainayn Alaa Tafseer Al-Jalaalayn]

So with this desire of theirs, they are in ignorance and straying far away from the truth and rectification. (3)

Verse 48 Surah Al-Haqqah and Verse 82 Surah Al-Israa

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

وَإِنَّهُ لَتَذۡكِرَةٌ۬ لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ

And verily, this Qur’an is a Reminder for the people who fear Allaah. [Al-Haaqqah. 48]

The Qur’an is a reminder for the people who fear Allah. The person who fears Allah is reminded through the Qur’an, then enabled to see what is beneficial and harmful to him, thus, he pursues what is beneficial and avoids what is harmful.

The Qur’an reminds him of the Perfect Names, Attributes and Actions of his Lord, so he believes in them.

The Qur’an reminds him of Allah’s reward, punishment, threats, commands and prohibitions, and the amazing events through which Allah’s allies (were supported) and His enemies (destroyed).

The Qur’an reminds the pious person about his soul, the means to its purification, cleanliness and elevation, and what would defile, lower and disgrace it. He remembers, through the Qur’an, the knowledge related to the beginning of creation, the Hereafter, paradise and hell fire, and the knowledge about good and evil.

The Qur’an is a reminder about reality, a proof for humankind and Jinn, a benefit and source of welfare (in all affairs of their life) and a guidance for those who seek knowledge. [1]

Allah, The Most High, said:

وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٌ۬ وَرَحۡمَةٌ۬ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ‌ۙ

And We send down from the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it). [Al-Israa. 82]

There are three statements (of the scholars) regarding the Qur’an being a healing:

It is a healing for misguidance due to what it contains of guidance.

It is healing for illnesses due to what it contains of blessings.

It is healing due to its explanation and clarification of the obligatory duties and rulings of the religion. [2]

The Qur’an is a healing for the diseases of ignorance, doubt and scepticism. Allah has never revealed a cure that is neither more comprehensive and beneficial; nor greater and quicker in removing diseases than the Qur’an. [3]

The healing that the Qur’an contains deals with all (diseases) of the hearts, such the disease of Shubhah (a matter that is made to resemble truth but is falsehood in reality), ignorance, corrupt views, perversion and evil goals. This is because it is founded on the Knowledge that is based on absolute certainty through which every ambiguity and ignorance is removed, and it contains an admonition and a reminder through which every desire that is in opposition to the command of Allah is removed. It is a healing for the bodies against harmful things and illnesses. As for it being a mercy, it is due to the Asbaab [i.e. sound means] and Wasaa’il [i.e. paths] it guides to, which if the servant of Allah acts upon them, they will successfully (receive) Mercy and an everlasting happiness- reward in this worldly life and everlasting reward in the Hereafter. [4]

The Qur’an combines between healing for the diseases of the heart, such as doubt, hypocrisy and other than that. It is a healing for the bodies when utilised for Ruqya, such as what took place in the story of the man who performed ruqya with Surah Al-Fatihah on a man who was stung and it is an authentic and well known story. [25] The Character Trait Most Hated to The Messenger

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated:

There was no trait more hated to Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, than lying. A man would speak based on lies in the presence of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he would not be content until he knew that he had repented”. [Sahih at-Tirmidhi 1973]

Imam Ibn al-Mubarak, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“Hadith is written (acquired) from everyone except four: one who often makes mistakes and does not retract, a liar, a person of vain desires who calls others to his Bidah, and a man who does not preserve (memorise what he hears) and then narrates from memory”.

The Power That Poses Great Danger to Its Seeker

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Power That Poses Great Danger to Its Seeker: A Prophetic Warning on Authority and Accountability

Abdur-Rahman Bin Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said:

“O Abdur-Rahman! Do not seek to be a ruler, for if you are given authority on your demand, you will be held responsible for it, but if you are given it without asking, you will be helped (by Allah). If you ever take an oath to do something and later on find that something else is better, then you should expiate your oath and do what is better”. [Al-Bukhari 7146]

The person who pursues authority and attains it will not find assistance. It is well known that holding authority comes with difficulties, so if one does not receive help from Allah, they will become ensnared by it and consequently lose both their worldly life and the afterlife. Hence, a sensible person refrains from seeking authority. However, if they are deserving and it is bestowed upon them without their request, then the truthful and trustworthy [Messenger] has assured them that Allah will assist them. [2]

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

You people will crave leadership and it will be a thing of regret on the Day of Resurrection. What a nice wet nurse it is, yet how evil is the weaning!” [Al-Bukhari 7148]

“Leadership” includes the Greater leadership, which is the Khilafah, and the smaller one which is the governorship over some countries (or province). This is information given (by the Prophet about something) before its occurrence, and it has occurred as he stated.

“It will be a thing of regret on the Day of Resurrection” for those who did not act by what is obligated regarding it.

“What a nice wet nurse, yet how evil is the weaning”. Ad-Dawudi said, “A nice wet nurse in this worldly life, yet evil in the hereafter as one will be held responsible. It mirrors premature weaning, resulting in ruin (harm)”. Others said, “A nice wet nurse due to the attainment of status, wealth, influence, and the fulfilment of physical and illusory pleasures (that may lead one to be fully distracted by the material world), yet how evil is the weaning when separated from it by death or other means, and the consequences that follow in the hereafter.” [3]

Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Two men from my tribe and I came to the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; one of the two men said to the Prophet: “O Allah’s Messenger! Appoint me as a governor,” and so did the second. The Prophet said:

“We do not assign the authority of ruling to those who ask for it, nor to those who are eager to have it.” [Al-Bukhaari 7149]

Abdur Rahman Bin Shumasa, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: I came to A’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, to inquire something from her. She said, “From which people are you?” I said, “I am from the people of Egypt”. She said, “What was the behaviour of your governor towards you in this war of yours?” I said, “We did not experience anything bad from him. If the camel of a man from us died, he would bestow on him a camel. If any one of us lost his slave, he would give him a slave. If anybody was in need of the basic necessities of life, he would provide them with provisions”. She said, “Behold! the treatment that was meted out to my brother, Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr, does not prevent me from telling you what I heard from Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of allaah be upon him]. He said in this house of mine, ‘O Allah! Whoever (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is hard upon them, be hard upon him, and who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is kind to them, be kind to him'”. [Sahih Muslim 1828]

Regarding the statement of the Prophet: “O Allah! Whoever (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is hard upon them, be hard upon him, and who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is kind to them, be kind to him”, Imam An-Nawawi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “This is one of the strongest rebukes against causing hardship for the people and the greatest urge to be kind to them”. [4]

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: One day Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood among us (to deliver a sermon). He talked about the misappropriation of booty, and declared it to be a serious matter and a grave sin. Then he said, “I shouldn’t find that any of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a growling camel mounted on his neck, and should appeal to me for help saying, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’ and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I already communicated to you’. I shouldn’t find that any of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a bleating ewe mounted on his neck, and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’ and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I conveyed to you’. I shouldn’t find that one of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a person crying loudly mounted on his neck, and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’, and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I conveyed to you’. I shouldn’t find that any one of you should come on the Day of Judgment with fluttering clothes wrapped round his neck and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’, and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allah at all; I conveyed to you’. I shouldn’t find that any of you should come on the Day of Judgment with a heap of gold and silver placed on his neck and he should say to me, ‘Messenger of Allah, help me’, and I should say, ‘I cannot avail you against Allaah at all; I already conveyed to you (the warning from the Almighty)'”. [Sahih Muslim 1831]

Regarding the statement of the Prophet, “I cannot avail you against Allah at all”, Imam An-Nawawi [may Allah have mercy upon him] stated that Al-Qadhi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said that this means “(Cannot avail you against Allah) with regards to forgiveness and intercession, except by the will of Allah]”. This statement of the Prophet is (a manifestation of) anger towards this person – at first – due to his wrong deed, then thereafter the Prophet will intercede for all the Muwahhideen [i.e. those who died upon the creed of pure Islamic monotheism]. [5]

Adee Bin Amirah Al-Kindi, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I heard Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say, “Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position of authority and he conceals from us a needle or something smaller than that, it would be misappropriation (of public funds) and will (have to) produce it on the Day of Judgment”. The narrator says: “A dark-complexioned man from the Ansar stood up – I can visualise him still – and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! Take back from me your assignment’. He said, ‘What has happened to you?’ The man said, ‘I have heard you say so and so’. He said, ‘I say that (even) now: Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position of authority, he should bring everything, big or small, and whatever he is given therefrom he should take, and he should restrain himself from taking that which is forbidden'”. [Sahih Muslim 1833]

The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Any man whom Allah has given authority to look after the affairs of a people and he dies whilst not looking after them [in the manner obligated by Allah and His Messenger], he will not smell the scent of paradise”. [Sahih Al-Bukhari. 7150]

Imam Muhammad Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen [may Allah have mercy upon him] said:

This does not (only) refer to the Muslim ruler, his assistant or a minister, or the elders of a people; rather it applies even to a man in his house. If he dies and did not look after his family (in the manner obligated by Allah and His Messenger), Allah will prevent him from smelling the scent of paradise. And those who give their families games that corrupt manners and destroy belief, there is no doubt that they have not looked after their families (in the manner obligated by Allah and His Messenger in this affair). If they die whilst being upon this state, it is feared that Allah will prevent them from smelling the scent of paradise”. [6]

Imam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “The sinners [i.e. those who die while committing sins lesser than shirk] are under the will of Allah. If Allah wishes, He will either punish them or forgive them straight away, or He enters them into hell for some time and paradise thereafter, just as Allah said:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٲلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ

Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases. [Surah An-Nisaa’ Aayah 48]

Obedience to The Rulers In Good and Not to Rebel Even When They Are Oppressive

Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Indeed, you will see Atharatan after me and affairs you’ll disapprove; they [i.e. the people] said, ‘What do you command us O Allah’s Messenger?’ He said, ‘Fulfil their rights [i.e. the rulers] and ask Allah for your rights'”.

Al-Allamah Zaid Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali [may Allah have mercy upon him] said:

This authentic hadith is related to the affair of the rulers- during the end of time – when they will give precedence to themselves through enjoyment of the worldly things and those under their authority will face harm, something of oppression and tyranny; so the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] guided and directed the people to fulfil the rights of the rulers; obey and listen to them in that which is good- whether it is during a time in which one is enthusiastic [to listen and obey them in what is good] or feeling lackadaisical- perform Jihad behind their banner against the enemies of the religion, establish the prayer and behave in a manner obligated by the Islamic legislation. They should not rebel against the ruler just because he is a sinner or an oppressor, nor refrain from giving him the rights obligated on them to give him; rather they should fulfil his rights just as the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] commanded them, saying, “Fulfil their rights”.

Therefore, the ruler has rights that should be fulfilled by his subjects and the subjects also have rights to be fulfilled by the ruler. It is obligated on the ruler to fulfil their rights and it is obligated on them to fulfil his rights. However, if he [i.e. the ruler] falls short in something related to their rights, it is not permissible for them to [deliberately] fall short in fulfilling his rights. And due to the great importance of rulership and the rulers, indeed the Prophet commanded them to fulfil the obligation of As-Sam’i wat-Taa’ah [i.e. to listen and obey the ruler in good], refrain from disobedience [when commanded to do something good], supplicate to Allah to make their affairs easy and change their state of affairs to that which is good, aid them to fulfil their needs and those affairs they cannot do without.

This hadith contains a miracle of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and that is the fact that he clearly stated that during the end of time, the rulers will give precedence to themselves with something of wealth and worldly enjoyment, and others will be deprived of it. Also, there will be affairs which the people of sound judgement will reject. [So], when this era comes, it is obligated on them – those under the rulership of a Muslim ruler – to listen and obey in that which is good, fulfil the rights that have been obligated on them to fulfil and seek their rights from Allah – meaning: they supplicate to Allah to aid them in fulfilling their needs and facilitate them with ease in their affairs. And Allaah knows best. [7]

Strength and Security is Achieved Behind The Ruler

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him] said:

The Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, ‘Verily, the leader is a shield behind whom they fight and he protects them. If he commands (people to) fear Allah [The Exalted] and justice, then he will have a reward. If he commands something else, then it will be against him’”. [Ṣaḥih Muslim 1841]

Regarding the Prophet’s statement, “The leader is a shield”, Imam An-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“He is like a shelter because he prevents the enemy from harming the Muslims, prevent the people from (harming) one another, protects the Muslim nation and the people fear his authority. And the meaning of the Prophet’s [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] statement, “Behind whom they fight”, meaning, alongside him they fight against the disbelievers (i.e. those at war with his country), the rebels, the khaarijites and all the perpetrators of corruption and oppression”. [8]

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan [may Allah preserve him] stated:

Towards the end of the Messenger’s life, he admonished the people as occurs in the hadeeth of Irbad Ibn Sariyah [may Allah be pleased with him] who said, ‘The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] led us in prayer one day, then turned his face towards us and delivered a powerful admonition that made our hearts fearful and our eyes tearful. So, a man said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah! It is as if it were a farewell admonition, so what do you enjoin upon us?’ He said, ‘I advise you to fear Allaah and to listen and obey even if a slave is a leader over you. Verily, the one who lives among you after me will see a lot of differences, so adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khulafaa- adhere to it and bite onto that with your molar teeth (i.e. adhere to it firmly), and avoid the newly invented matters in the religion, because indeed every newly invented matter in the religion is an innovation in religion and every innovation in religion is misguidance'”.

In this command, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded us to fear Allah. At-Taqwah is a comprehensive word that covers all good qualities. And the meaning of Taqwah is a ‘means of protection between yourself and what you fear will harm you’. It is what shields you from danger, such as (something used) as a means of protection between your foot and the excessive heat on the ground, or (something) placed as a means of protection between you and an injurious thing, or a shield placed as means of protection between you and a weapon, or )something) placed as a means of protection between you and the cold or the heat. This (i.e. above examples) are related to tangible things. As for Taqwah (in the divine revelation it means) to protect yourself from the Anger of Allah, His punishment and the fire of hell, by carrying out His commands and keeping away from His Prohibitions. You cannot be protected from the punishment of Allah, His Anger and the Fire of Hell by fortresses, armies and garments; rather you can only be protected through Fear of Allah [Glorified and Exalted be He] by carrying out Allah’s commands and keeping away from His Prohibitions.

Leadership cannot be accomplished except by way of Sam’i wat Taa’ah (i.e. to listen to the Ruler and being obedient to him) even if he is an Abyssinian slave and does not command a person to disobey Allah. Therefore, the Leader of the Muslims is to be obeyed because there is an overriding benefit for the Muslims in doing so, in order to bring about unity. However, the exception is what the Messenger stated that ‘There is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator’. Therefore, the ruler is not obeyed in disobedience to Allah, but he is obeyed in that which is in opposition to sin. However, this does not mean that we come out and rebel if he commands disobedience; rather we do not obey him in sin, but we obey him in those affairs that do not involve sin'”. [9]

The Shaikh also stated:

Allah, The Most High, said:

وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمُ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡ هَـٰذَا بَلَدًا ءَامِنً۬ا وَٱرۡزُقۡ أَهۡلَهُ ۥ مِنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٲتِ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ مِنۡہُم بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ‌ۖ

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said, “My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day.” [Surah Al-Baqarah. Ayah 126]

Indeed, he (Ibrahim- peace and blessings be upon him) gave priority to security over seeking sustenance because security is a necessity. Security is a necessity and the people cannot enjoy sustenance alongside fear; rather sustenance cannot be reached in the presence of fear. This is what the enemies desire- those who try to destabilise Muslim societies. They wish to disassociate the Muslims from their unity behind their Muslim rulers. This is what they desire – and they do not desire good advice (rectification etc) for the Muslims – in the name of fulfilling beneficial affairs, rectification, removal of oppression, and the like. All of this is lies and pretenses because if rulership slips away chaos will be at large, corruption will spread and the beneficial affairs which they say will be fulfilled will be non-existent. Corruption will be at large and there will not be rectification. Therefore, for this reason, there has to be rulership upon which the Muslims unite. Even if (such rulership) has shortcomings and negligence, the (people) should exercise patience because there is a prevention of that which is more severe and harmful in exercising patience. Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“It is not known of a group that rose against their Muslim Ruler, except that their state of affairs after his removal was eviler than their state of affairs whilst he was present”. This is something experienced at present! The rulers and heads of state who have been removed, what is the state of affairs of their countries after they were (removed)? There has not ceased to be fear, anxiety, chaos, bloodshed, etc. [10]

Supplicating For The Rulers

Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “I hold that the leader of the believers is to be obeyed (in good) in private and public, in my times of hardship and ease, in my times of enthusiasm and when I dislike doing something (i.e. something that’s not unlawful, but one does not like to do it, however he must do it in obedience to the ruler), and when others are given precedence over me. Indeed, I supplicate to Allah – night and day – for him to be successful and guided”. [11]

Abdus Samad Bin Yazid Al-Baghdadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: I heard Al-Fudayl Bin Iyaad, may Allah have mercy upon him, saying, “If I had a supplication that would be accepted, I would not make it except for the leader”. It was said to him, “O father of Ali! Why is that?” He said, “When I make it for myself, it would be only for me, but if I make it for the leader, the rectification (or righteousness) of the leader would consequently result in the rectification of the people and the country”. It was said to him, “O father of Ali! How is that? Explain this to us”. He said, “As for the wellbeing of the land, if the people are safe from the ruler’s tyranny, they will develop abandoned areas and settle in the land. And with regards to the rectification of the people, one observes the affair of a people among the ignoramuses and says, ‘They have been distracted by the pursuit of livelihood rather than seeking what will benefit them with regards to learning the Qur’an and other things’. So, he gathers them together in a house – fifty in number, less or more, and says to a man, ‘You have what will make your affair upright and teach these people their religion’. Then you’ll see what Allah, The Mighty and Majestic, brings forth from among them that would make the land righteous (and prosperous, thrive, flourish, etc) and that would return to them (i.e. they’ll receive its benefits). This would be the rectification of the people and the country”. Imam Ibn Al-Mubarak, may Allah have mercy upon him, kissed Imam Fudayl’s forehead and said, “O teacher of goodness! Who else (i.e. among us) would be able to (say or do) this better than you?!” [12]

Self-Accountability: Timeless Reflections on Humility, Sincerity, and Inner Reform

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, stated:

I accompanied Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, until he entered a garden. I heard him speaking while there was a wall between us, and he was inside the garden saying: “O Umar Ibn al-Khattab! The leader of the believers! Take heed! By Allah, you must fear Allah, or He will indeed punish you.” [1]

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him:

“Indeed, the people make their speech very good and appropriate; the one whose speech conforms with his actions is that one who has achieved his portion of (good). And the one whose speech opposes his actions, then he is that one who has rebuked himself’’. [2]

Jubair Ibn Nufair, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

A delegation said to Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him: “By Allah! We have never seen a man who is more just, speaks the truth more boldly, or is tougher on hypocrites than you, O leader of the believers. You are the best of people after Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him”. In response, Awf Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “You have lied (or said something contrary to reality)! Certainly, we have seen someone better than him after Allah’s Messenger”. When asked who that was, Awf replied, “Abu Bakr.” Umar said: “Awf has spoken the truth and you have lied (or said something contrary to reality). By Allah! Indeed, Abu Bakr was more fragrant than musk, while I am more lost than a stray camel!” [3]

Abu Ubaydah Ibn Al-Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him, once led a group in prayer. After he finished, he remarked, “Shaytan has not left me alone until he made me feel more virtuous than those behind me. I will never lead again.” [4]

Abu Hafs, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“Whoever does not blame his soul at all times, does not oppose it in all circumstances, and does not compel it at all times to do (the good) it hates to do, he is truly deceived. Anyone who views any aspect of their soul favourably has ruined himself”.

The soul calls for destruction, aiding adversaries, yearning for all that is vile, and following every evil. It inclines towards opposing (what is right). The greatest blessing is to escape its grasp, as it serves as the most significant barrier between a person and Allah . Those who are most aware of this are often the harshest critics of their own souls, holding them in contempt. To despise the self for the sake of Allah is a trait of the righteous, and through this disdain, a person can draw closer to Allah in an instant, far more than through actions. [5]

Imam Al-Aajurree – may Allah have mercy upon him- said:

I will provide you with a similitude that is clear to you. Know that the soul can be compared to a young horse, and the beholder is amazed when he looks at its good appearance and beauty.

The people who possess knowledge regarding it say: It will not yield any benefit until it undergoes proper training and discipline, at which point it will prove to be advantageous – capable of performing well and being of service, leading its rider to commend the results of its training and discipline. However, without discipline, its attractive appearance and beauty will be futile, and its rider will not praise its performance when needed.

If the young horse’s owner heeds the advice of knowledgeable individuals regarding its situation, he will recognize the validity of their counsel and subsequently entrust the horse to a trainer. A horse trainer is only deemed deserving of the title if they are skilled in the training process and possess patience.

If the trainer is well-versed in horse training and understands the most effective approach, the owner will benefit; however, if the trainer lacks expertise in horse training and discipline, he will harm the young horse, expend unnecessary effort, and the rider will be dissatisfied with the outcome.

Should he possess expertise in horse training and disciplinary techniques, yet lack the fortitude to withstand the challenges inherent in the process, seek comfort over perseverance, and exhibit negligence towards the appropriate actions to be taken, he will ultimately ruin and mistreat the young horse, rendering it unsuitable for duty and incapable of running, resulting in a discrepancy between its outward appearance and its actual capabilities.

If the owner of the young horse was also its trainer, he would feel remorse when regret becomes futile due to his neglect. So, when a task is required, he looks at another horse whose assistance is requested and given and moves swiftly when necessary. However, when he asks his horse for help and requests it to move swiftly, he receives no answer and the horse refuses to comply. All of this is a result of his negligence in training the horse and his impatience after acknowledging it. Consequently, he starts to blame himself, saying: “Why was I negligent and why did I fall short? Truly, my impatience has caused everything I detest”. And Allah’s Aid is sought! Consider and comprehend this similitude, may Allah have mercy on you, so that you may be successful and saved. [6]

Jundub Al-Bajalee, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

“The example of one who admonishes the people but forgets himself is like a lamp that gives light to others and burns itself”. [7]

Verses 13-14 Surah Az-Zukhruf

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

And indeed if you ask them, “Who has created the heavens and the earth?” They will surely say: “The All-Mighty, the All-Knower created them.”

Who has made for you the earth like a bed, and has made for you roads therein, in order that you may find your way,

And Who sends down water (rain) from the sky in due measure. Then We revive a dead land therewith, and even so you will be brought forth (from the dead),

And Who has created all the pairs and has appointed for you ships and cattle on which you ride,

In order that you may mount firmly on their backs, and then may remember the Favour of your Lord when you mount thereon, and say: “Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts). And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return!” [Az-Zukhruf 9-14]

In order that you may mount on their backs, and then may remember the Favour of your Lord when you mount thereon, and say: “Glory to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts).  And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return!” [Az-Zukhruf. 13-14]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Mentioned are the three pillars of gratitude and they are:

To acknowledge Allah’s blessings, proclaim Allah’s blessings, praise Allah for them, submit to Allah and utilise them to carry out acts of worship for the sake of Allah (alone). This is because the intent behind the statement of Allah:

وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

“And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return” is an acknowledgement of recompense and being prepared for it.

The objective behind these favours is that they are an aid through which a person fulfils that which Allah has commanded him.

And regarding Allah’s statement:

ثُمَّ تَذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ رَبِّكُمْ إِذَا اسْتَوَيْتُمْ

“And then may remember the favour of your Lord when you mount thereon”.

This is a specific mention of the (favour) at the time in (which the person enjoys those favours) because blessings intoxicates many amongst the creation, makes them heedless, evil and ungrateful. Thus, this state in which Allah commanded (a person to remember Him for His Favours) is a remedy for this destructive ailment. When the servant of Allah recalls that he is completely surrounded by Allah’s blessings and that nothing is from himself, but rather blessings are (from Allah), -lits means are facilitated and its obtainment made easy (by Allah), he submits to Allah, humbles himself, thanks and praises Allah, and through this he is given continuous blessings. [1]

Sulayman Bin Yasaar, may Allah have mercy upon him, reported that some people were on a journey, then they said before departing:

سُـبْحانَ الَّذي سَخَّـرَ لَنا هذا وَما كُنّا لَهُ مُقْـرِنين
وَإِنّا إِلى رَبِّنـا لَمُنْقَـلِبون

“Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts). And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return”.

A man among them, who possessed a strong she-camel, said, “As for me, I shall indeed arrive at night using this sturdy she-camel.” However, the camel threw him off, resulting in a broken neck. [2]

[2] “Al-Uqoobaat” by Ibn Abee Dunyah. 316.

Verses 263-264 Surah Al-Baqarah

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High. said:

قَوۡلٌ۬ مَّعۡرُوفٌ۬ وَمَغۡفِرَةٌ خَيۡرٌ۬ مِّن صَدَقَةٍ۬ يَتۡبَعُهَآ أَذً۬ى‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَنِىٌّ حَلِيمٌ۬

Kind words and forgiving of faults are better than Sadaqah (charity) followed by injury. And Allah is Rich (Free of all wants) and He is Most-Forbearing]. [Al-Baqarah. 263]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated:

Allah informed us that kind speech- which all hearts recognise and do not reject; and forgiveness- to pardon the one who treated you badly, are better than charity that is followed by harm. Kind speech is good treatment and charity through speech; and forgiveness is good treatment by way of refraining from retaliation and holding someone responsible. These are two types of good treatments.

As for charity followed by harm, it is a good deed that is followed by its nullifier, and there is no doubt that two good deeds are better than a good dead that is nullified.

This also includes the forgiveness shown by the person when he encounters some harm and harsh behaviour from the one who he could not fulfil his request; therefore, showing forgiveness to him would be better than giving him charity and then harming him. Speaking kindly to him, refraining (from retaliation) and forgiving him is better for you than giving him charity and then harming him.

Then Allah ended this verse with the mention of two of His Attributes which are suitable for mention in this matter, saying:

وَٱللَّهُ غَنِىٌّ حَلِيمٌ۬

And He is Most-Forbearing.

Indeed, Allah is not in need of you and nothing (from the benefits of) your charity reaches him, rather all the abundant good in this charity and its benefits returns to you and not to Allah. Therefore, how can one flaunt through his spending and causes harm while Allah is completely not in need of it and everything else besides it. In addition to this, Allah is forbearing because He does not hasten punishment against the one who flaunts. Allah is completely free from need in every way and He is the One described as One with forbearance, the one who overlooks and forgives, alongside the fact that He bestows His vast favours and ample gifts; then how can one of you harm another person by flaunting and offending, even though what you give is little, and you are weak and poor (in the sight of Allah).

Then Allah said:

O you who believe! Do not render in vain your Sadaqah (charity) by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allah, nor in the Last Day. His likeness is the likeness of a smooth rock on which is a little dust; on it falls heavy rain which leaves it bare. They are not able to do anything with what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. [Al-Baqarah 264]

This spender, whose spending has been nullified, is likened to a Safwaan – a rock with a smooth, flat, and slippery surface and with dust on it. Then heavy rain falls on it, washing away the dust and leaving it bare, devoid of any vegetation or growth. This is one of the finest and most profound parables because it draws a parallel between the heart of such a spender, who flaunts and his spending is devoid of belief in Allah and the Last Day, to the rock itself, symbolising hardness, rigidity, and lack of benefit. It demonstrates the impact of charity represented by the fine dust on the rock, and the heavy rain that washes it away, mirroring the nullification and removal of the spender’s charity. Consequently, the spender is unable to reap any rewards from his charity, as it has been nullified and removed.

Another perspective on this is that (even though) someone spends for something other than the sake of Allah, it may seem like they have performed a deed that will be rewarded. So, it seems as if it is made to grow like the grain that is sown in fertile soil and it grows seven ears, and each era has a hundred grains. However, hidden behind this spending there is something that prevents it from gaining anything, just like a rock hidden beneath the soil that stops seeds from sprouting and growing.

A Benefit from Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah Shared by My Salafi Brother, Confidant, and Colleague

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

A Benefit from Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, Shared After Work by My Salafi Brother, Friend, Confidant, and Colleague, Ustadh Abu Tasneem Mushaf Al-Banghali, may Allah preserve him and his family Amin

Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated:

وقد يكون الرجل من أذكياء الناس وأحدهم نظرا ويعميه عن أظهر الأشياء، وقد يكون من أبلد الناس وأضعفهم نظرا ويهديه لما اختلف فيه من الحق بإذنه، فلا حول ولا قوة إلا به

And indeed, a man may be from the intelligent people and the most acute in perception, (however) He (Allah) blinds him to most obvious (clearest) things. And he may be among the dullest and weakest in perception, (however), He (Allah) – by His permission – guides him to the truth in which (people) differ, and there is neither Hawl nor Quwwah except through Him. (1) [Refer to Footnote a]

Then furthermore- in the same section – Shaikh Al-Islam quotes one of the supplications of the night prayer as follows:

O Allah! Lord of Jibraa’eel, Meekaa’eel, and Israafeel, Creator of the heavens and the Earth, The Knower of the seen and the unseen. You judge between Your slaves regarding which they differ. Guide me to the truth regarding that in which there is differing, by Your Will. Verily, You guide whomever you will to the straight path. [Sahih Muslim 770][Refer to Footnote b]

_____________

Footnote a: Abu Musa Al-Ash’aree, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me, “O Abdullah Bin Qais! Shall I tell you a word which is one of the treasures of Paradise? It is

“There is neither might nor power (to alternate from one state to another nor move from one thing to another) except by Allaah’s Will” . [Al-Bukhari 6384 & Muslim 2704]

“One of the treasures of paradise”. Meaning, its reward is great and that is paradise; and Paradise is the greatest thing sought after. This shows the virtue of the statement Laa “Hawla Walaa Quwwata illaa Billah”. why does it carry this reward? This is because it necessitates surrendering all of one’s affairs to Allah, manifesting one’s inability and poverty in the presence of Allah, and that indeed Allah is The One Perfect in Strength and The One Fully Able to do all things. It is a great statement, easy to utter and repeat on the tongue. (1)

Shaikh Al-Islam Al-Harawee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said that Abu Haytham, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “Al-Hawl [i.e. might] is Al-Haraka [movement], meaning, there is no movement nor ability except by the Will of Allah”. And it is said, “There is no might to repel evil nor any power to reach good except by the Will of Allaah”. (2)

Footnote b:

[Sahih Muslim 770]

The scholars say that these creations [i.e. Jibraa’eel, Meekaa’eel, Israafeel, the heavens, and the earth] have been specifically mentioned, even though Allah is the Creator of all the creation, just as has been established in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah with regards to the specific mention of every created thing that has a great and mighty status as one of Allah’s creation, such as the statement, “Lord of the Heavens and the Earth”, “Lord of the Supreme Throne”, “Lord of the Angels and Jibreel”, “The Lord of the two Easts (places of sunrise during early summer and early winter) and the Lord of the two Wests (places of sunset during early summer and early winter)”, “The Lord of Humankind”, “The King of Humankind”, “The Only True God of Humankind”, “The Lord of all Created Things”, “The Lord of the Prophets”, “The Creator of the Heavens and the Earth”, “The Originator of the Heavens and the Earth” etc.  All these things and what is similar to them show Allah’s Greatness, All-encompassing Power, and absolute Sovereignty. (4)

In this supplication, one employs the means of seeking Allah’s (love, aid, pleasure, assistance, etc) through belief and affirmation that He is the Lord – in general and specific – of these three Angels, who have been given a means of giving life. Jibra’eel is given the responsibility to convey the revelation (to the Prophets) by way of which the hearts and souls are given that type of life that necessitates the presence of sound belief in the heart that leads to all righteous deeds. Meekaa’eel is given the responsibility to bring the rain by way of which the earth, the vegetation, and animals are given life, and Israafeel is given the responsibility to blow the trumpet by way of which the creation is resurrected after their death.

Also employing the means of seeking Allah’s (love, aid, assistance, pleasure, etc) through belief and affirmation that Allah alone is the Originator of the heavens and earth, meaning, He is their Creator and the one who brought them into existence prior to their non-existence, and that He is the knower of the unseen and the seen- meaning, the hidden and apparent, and because He alone is the One Who judges between the servants in that which they differ, so that He guides you to the truth in that which they differ. As for guidance, it is knowledge of the truth together with having the intent to follow the truth and preferring it over other things. The guided person acts upon the truth and desires it, and it is the Greatest blessing of Allah bestowed on the servants. We ask Allah to guide us all to the straight path and grant us every good. (5) [End of quotes]

NB: Some ask, “Why do you mention the name of the one who shared the Faa’idah with you?!”

The answer:

“We live in an era in which some seek to rewrite history, portray themselves as ones who have achieved everything by themselves and begin to patronise -either through actions or words- those who benefitted them in the past. This despicable behaviour is a disease we fear for ourselves in this era in which access to knowledge is easy but behaviour has deteriorated. Even if a child or the most ignorant person benefits us with a Faa’idah, we’ll attribute it to them insha’Allah. We ask Allah:

Reflections from some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali – [109]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked about the hadith:

“Whoever prays for forty days in congregation and catches the first Takbeer, two things will be written for him- safety from the fire and hypocrisy”. [1]

The Shaikh, may Allah have mercy upon him, responded:

We ask Allah to enable all of us accomplish this. This is a difficult matter that requires striving against the Nafs and an intense desire to accomplish this deed. We will not accomplish this except if we are early for every prayer, and the A’dhan is not called except that we are in the vicinity of the masjid or in it.  This (person) will accomplish it by the Will of Allah. Therefore, be eager for this good deed. [2]

The danger of selective punishment

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Aa’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, reported that the Quraish had been anxious about the Makhzumi woman who had committed theft, and said, “Who will speak to Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about her?” They said, “Who dare it, but Usamah, the loved one of Allah’s Messenger?” So Usamah spoke to him. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger said, “Do you intercede regarding one of the punishments prescribed by Allah?” He then stood up and addressed (people) saying, “O people! Those who have gone before you were destroyed, because if any one of high status committed theft amongst them, they spared him; and if anyone of low status committed theft, they inflicted the prescribed punishment upon him. By Allah, if Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would have her hand cut of”. [1]

“Do you intercede regarding one of the punishments prescribed by Allah?” Meaning, it is not permissible to intercede regarding the divine prescribed punishments.

“Those who have gone before you were destroyed because if any one of high status committed theft amongst them, they spared him; and if anyone of low status committed theft, they inflicted the prescribed punishment upon him”.

Meaning, destroyed through punishment due to their sins. They were destroyed due to this matter because they said, “This is a person of high status and it is not possible to cut his hand”. When a person of high status amongst them stole, they let him off, (but) when a person of low status stole, they established the punishment on him, thus the implementation of Allah’s prescribed punishments was carried out based on their desires. In this hadith is proof to show that the nations before us committed theft, and that there was much theft in their midst including the wealthy, the poor, the one of high status and the one of low status.

The Messenger then made an oath – even though he is the righteous and truthful one without making an oath – that “By Allah, if Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would have her hand cut of”.

O Allah! Send Your Salutations and blessings upon him (i.e. the prophet). This is how justice should be and the manner in which Allah’s rulings are to be applied, and not through desires. He made an oath that if Fatimah – who was of a higher status than that Makhzumi woman, both in nobility and lineage, because she is the leader of the women of paradise, the daughter of Muhammad – stole, he would cut her hand. [2]

Imaam An-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated that Imam Muslim, may Allah have mercy upon him, mentioned narrations in the chapter regarding the forbiddance of interceding in the divine ordained punishments and that this was the cause of the destruction of the Children of Israel. The scholars unanimously agreed that – due to these narrations – interceding in the divine ordained punishments – after the affair has reached the leader – is prohibited. As for before it reaches the leader, most scholars have permitted intercession if the one being interceded for is not an evil person and harmful to the people. As for the sins (or acts of disobedience) for which there are no prescribed punishments, then intercession regarding them is permissible whether the affair has reached the leader or not. Intercession in these affairs is desirable if the one being interceded for is not a harmful person and so on. [3]
