[5] Advice for the seekers of knowledge-Learn before the likes of these people appear!

Uqbah Bin Aamir (radiyallaahu-anhu) said: ”Learn before those who depend on guessing”; meaning: those who base their judgement on presumption. (1) Imaam Nawawi (rahimahullaah) stated in Al-Majmoo (1/42): The meaning of  it (i.e. this statement of Uqbah) is: ”Learn knowledge from its people before they depart -those competent god fearing people-and there appear a people (who) speak in (affairs) of knowledge by way of their own (ideas) and presumptions, which has no sharia basis.”  (2)

[4] Advice for the seekers of knowledge–Don’t degrade yourself for the sake of the Dunya

Some of the wise people said: Whoever is given knowledge (of the religion) and knowledge of the Qur’aan, then it is incumbent that he is aware of himself. He does not lower himself to the people of the Dunya (i.e. those with worldly riches) due to what they possess of the worldly riches; for indeed he has been given better than what has been given to the people of the worldly riches. That is because Allaah (The Most High) called the worldly life ‘A Short Enjoyment; so He said: [قُلۡ مَتَـٰعُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا قَلِيلٌ۬ -Say: “Short is the enjoyment of this world]; and He called knowledge and the Qur’aan [خَيۡرً۬ا ڪَثِيرً۬ا‌ۗ- Abundant good]

[3] Advice for the seekers of knowledge-[Do not be oblivious of this affair!]

Allaah (The Most High) stated about the one who was not benefited by the abundant knowledge that was given to him:

[وَلَوۡ شِئۡنَا لَرَفَعۡنَـٰهُ بِہَا- And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith (7:176)]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: Therefore, Allaah informed (us) that being elevated in His presence is not merely acquired through knowledge, for indeed this person was from the scholars; rather elevation is acquired through adherence to the truth, giving precedence to it and aiming to please Allaah. Indeed, this person was among the most knowledgeable during his era, but he was neither elevated through his knowledge nor did he benefit from it. We seek Allaah’s protection from knowledge that does not benefit.

[1] Advice for the seekers of knowledge

Shaikh Raslaan (may Allaah preserve him) stated:

When Allaah (The Mighty and Majestic) commanded His slaves to worship Him (alone), He did not leave them to seek a means to this great purpose through any course they want and adopt any means (based on their own) view; rather He legislated worship and legislated its howness (i.e.the manner in which it should be performed), and He precisely determined its form. And anyone who falls short in this or anyone who adds to it, then he is from the transgressors and his deed is rejected. It has been reported in the Saheehayn (i.e. Bukhaari and Muslim) from Aisha (radiyallaahu-anhaa) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:

[من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد]- Whoever innovates into this affair of ours (i.e. in this religion) that which is not from it will have it rejected.

Shaikh Raslaan (may Allaah preserve him) said about his father (rahimahullaah):

”You taught me that a rebuke of truth is more honorable for me than a praise of falsehood; and that the reproach of a truthful person is better for me than the praise of a liar.”

O youth! Remember this whenever you’re amazed with the little you know!

Allaah (The Most High) said:

وَٱللَّهُ أَخۡرَجَكُم مِّنۢ بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ وَٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةَ‌ۙ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ

”And Allah has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you know nothing. And He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks (to Allah).” [16:78]

Remember this whenever you’re aggressive towards elders due to being deceived by your youth!

”Allah is He Who created you in (a state of) weakness, then gave you strength after weakness, then after strength gave (you) weakness and grey hair. He creates what He wills. And it is He Who is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful (i.e. Able to do all things).” [30:54]

[4] Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee “the students of knowledge should do their up most to increase in…”

Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) said:

“It is necessary that the students of knowledge do their utmost to increase in seeking knowledge; exercising patience in facing every obstacle and having a sincere intention for the sake of Allaah (The Most High) in pursuit of it; for indeed actions are judged by intention. And they should have a fervent desire for Allaah’s Aid and Assistance because good cannot be reached except by the Help of Allaah.”

Zakariyah As-Saajiy (rahimahullaah) said: Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) used to command (one) to study Fiqh and forbid from argumentation in philosophical rhetoric.
