Sickness of the Heart – Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:

Sickness of the heart; (and protection is sought from Allah) it brings about corruption in one’s worldly life and after life. If the heart becomes sick with doubt, polytheism, hypocrisy or a dislike for what Allah has revealed, or hatred towards Allah’s allies, or with anything that is similar to that, then indeed (as a result of that) his worldly life and after life will end up in ruin. Therefore, it is binding upon you whenever you ask for well-being to bring to mind that you’re asking (for both) well-being against illness of the heart as well as illness of the body.

What will soften the hearts – Shaykh Fawzaan

Question:
If a person has with him hardness in his heart, then what are affairs that will soften the heart?

Answer:

There is nothing better or more necessary (for softening the heart) than the Noble Qur’aan. It is what will soften the hearts. Allah -the Exalted and Sublime – said:

‘’Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.’’ [Surah al-Rad Verse 28]

So the Qur’aan is what will soften the hearts, which if Allah were to reveal it on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rending asunder by the fear of Allah;

‘’Had We sent down this Quran on a mountain, you would surely have seen it humbling itself and rending asunder by the fear of Allah.’’ [Suratul Hashr Verse 21]

Likewise sitting with the righteous and listening to The Qur’aan, (listening) to admonitions and reminders–this is what will soften the hearts.

What is the proof from the Qur’aan that sins prevents (a person) from understanding the Qur’aan?

Answer:

Allaah the most high says:  كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

[”Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn.’’ [83:14]   Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) derived from this ayah that sin is a cause of not (being able) to understand the Qur’aan.
