It Is Not Permissible to Exalt The Innovators – [By Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said:

It is not permissible to exalt and praise the innovators even if they have some truth with them. That is because raising and praising them will spread their bidah and place them amongst the sincere ones-those who are taken as examples amongst distinguished men of this Ummah. The Salaf warned against having trust for the innovators, (warned against) praising them and their gatherings. In this regard, Asad Ibn Musa (rahimahullaah) wrote: ”Beware of being a brother of the innovator (by association) or a companion of his, or one whom you sit with; for indeed it has been narrated that ‘Whoever sits with a person of innovation has left the protection of Allaah and is entrusted to himself’.

The innovators must be warned against and kept away from even if they have some truth with them. Indeed, the most astray are not devoid of some truth, but as long as they have with them innovation, opposition and sinful views, it is not permissible to praise and exalt them. It is impermissible to not have an objection against their innovation because this spreads bidah, belittles the Sunnah and by way of this the innovator will emerge and become a guide for the Ummah.

As for giving consideration (to the fact) that the innovation has some truth, this does not justify praising him. This is -to a far greater extent- against what is of overriding benefit and it is known in relation to a principle in the religion that averting harm takes precedence over seeking that which is of benefit. And with regards to having hatred for the innovator, the harm that is averted from the Ummah is weightier than the benefit possessed by the innovator. And had we adhered to this concept (i.e. praising the innovator because he has some truth with him), then no one would have been judged to be misguided and declared an innovator. That is because there is not an innovator except that he has some truth and adherence to the Sunnah. The innovator (may) neither be a disbeliever nor be in opposition to all the Islamic legislation; rather he is either an innovator in some or most of the affairs. However, if the innovation is particularly related to affairs of Creed and Methodology, then the affair is dangerous indeed because it will become an example (to be followed); innovation will spread and the innovators will become active in spreading their innovation.

So, this person who praises the innovators and makes their affair obscure to the people -due to some truth they (i.e. innovators) have – is one of two (people): Either he is one ignorant of the methodology of the pious predecessors and their stance against the innovators, so neither is it permissible for this ignorant one to speak nor is it permissible for the Muslims to listen to him; or he is one who has an objection to the truth because he knows the danger of innovation and the innovators, but he wishes to spread innovations. Nevertheless, this is a dangerous affair and it is not permissible to be lackadaisical with regards to innovation and its people, whatever that may be.  [Source: An Excerpt from At-Tabdee Wat-Tafseeq Wat Takfeer. The Three Types of Dhulm -[Oppression or Injustice]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

What is Dhulm -injustice or oppression? Dzulm [injustice (or oppression)] is of three types according to the people of knowledge (i.e. the scholars):

Firstly: The greatest of them is shirk and why is shirk referred as Dzulm [injustice]? That is because the basis of injustice is to place something in other than its rightful place. And the meaning of shirk is to direct acts of worship to other than its rightful place and this is the greatest injustice – because when they (i.e. the people of shirk) directed acts of worship to other than its rightful place and to those who are not deserving of it, they equated the created (beings) to the Creator and a weak one (i.e. a created being) to Al-Qawiy [The One Perfect in Strength (i.e. Allaah)], who is not unable to do anything. Therefore, is there any greater injustice after this?

The second type of Dzulm [injustice] is committed when a person oppresses himself by committing sins. A sinner oppresses himself because he exposes himself to punishment, even though it is obligated on his to save himself and place himself in an appropriate situation and that is to obey Allaah etc

The third type of Dzulm [injustice] is committed when a person oppresses others (or commits injustice against them) by taking their wealth (unlawfully), or backbiting them, or spreading tales about them, or stealing their wealth, or violating their honour through backbiting, tale carrying, slander, or shedding their blood by way of unlawful murder, or beating them, inflicting injuries, degrading them without right etc [Paraphrased. Question: What is the ruling about the one who hears the adhaan but does not go to the masjid to pray? Will his prayer be accepted if he prays at home or not?

Answer: Praying in congregation is obligatory. He – peace be upon him – said: “whoever hears the call [to prayer] but does not come to [the masjid], he has no prayer except with a [valid] excuse”. So it is mandatory for him to pray in congregation if he hears the call [to prayer] and is able to attend

The Evil of Khurooj (Rebellion) With the Sword Is Always Preceded By Khurooj with the Tongue- By Shaikh Uthaymeen

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) said, “There is no khurooj with the sword except that it is preceded by Khurooj with the tongue”. [Ref 1]

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzan (may Allaah preserve him) was asked:

The one (i.e. Dhul Khuwaysirah) who said to the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wsallam): ‘’be just’’; is he considered to be from the Sahaabah or is he a khaarijee, alongside the fact that he did not rebel against the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and did not disbelieve through major (kufr etc)?

Answer:

The one (i.e. Dhul Khuwaysirah) who said to the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) ‘’be just’’ is not a just person. This was the beginning of the khawaarij in view of the fact that he accused him of oppression.  And it is not a condition that the khawaarij have to carry weapons, rather he (the person) is from the khawaarij and upon their school of thought if he believes in declaring Muslims disbelievers due to major sins (they commit). If he incites (the people) against the one in charge of the affairs through sermons and writing, (then) this is the school of thought of the khawaarij even if he does not carry weapons.

The khawaarij are of different types: Amongst them are those who carry weapons; there are those who speak like the who said to the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam), ”Be Just”; amongst them are those who write and amongst them is the one who believes in his heart, but he neither speaks nor does anything; however he has the belief of the khawaarij in his creed.  But some of them are worse than others. Obligation of Repentance (Tawbah) – Shaykh Fawzaan

Belief that Tawbah is an obligation upon the slaves and repenting to Allah is from the major and minor sins

Belief that repentance is an obligation is obligatory, repentance from sins is an obligation Allah Lofty and Sublime said:

‘And turn to Allah all of you, Oh believers so that you may be successful.’ (An-Noor Verse 31)

And He said:

‘O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will remit from you your sins’     (At-Tahrim Verse 8)

And He said:

‘And whosoever does not repent then they are from the Dhalimoon(wrongdoers etc)’ (Al-Hujraat Verse 11)

Therefore it is obligatory for the Muslim to repent from his sins and from his evil deeds and it is obligatory that he does not continue upon them or commence upon them or that he is negligent with regards to sins, and he says; ‘this is easy’

Do not be negligent with it for it is from the sins, rather hasten with repentance.

The Most High said:

‘And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; – and none can forgive sins but Allah – And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.

For such, the reward is Forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allah’s Orders).’ Aal Imraan (Verses 135-136)

Allah commended them and promised them (those who repent)

He said:

‘’Allah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allah will forgive and Allah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise.

And of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil deeds until death faces one of them and he says: “Now I repent;” (An-Nisaa Verse 17-18)

When death arrives the repentance is not accepted and if mankind continues to live then his repentance in the presence of death is (furthermore) not accepted, so upon him is to rush to make repentance and not to delay it. As soon as he commits a sin he repents to Allah immediately.

Man is not infallible and errors occur from him, shortcomings occur from him, sins occur from him; however Allah Lofty and Sublime by way of his mercy has opened the door of repentance. He has opened for you the door of repentance and he calls you to it and he has promised you that He will forgive you if you are truthful in your repentance. So much so that if a disbeliever repents to Allah; Allah forgives him (the sin of) disbelief, Shirk, the killing of people and other than that.  If he repents to Allah He will forgive him. He said:

‘Say to those who have disbelieved if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven’ (Al-Anfaal Verse 38)

And in the Hadith:

‘Repentance nullifies that which came before it’ (1)

Therefore the Muslim needs to repent, the Messenger [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] use to seek forgiveness and repent to Allah more than a hundred times a day.

He [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] said:

‘Oh People! Repent to Allah, verily I repent more than seventy times a day’ (Bukhaari)

His companions (radiallaahu anhum) enumerated that in the gatherings he (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) would say more than a hundred times:

‘I seek Allah’s forgiveness,I seek Allah’s forgiveness’ (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

And he was the Messenger of Allah he (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam)!

So how about other than him?!

Therefore we need to repent to Allah the Lofty and Sublime, Man is not infallible sins occur from him, shortcomings occur from him, and mistakes occur from him, so he needs to repent.

And all the praises belong to Allah that He has opened the door of repentance for us and He has promised that He will accept (our repentance) and wipe away our sins.

(1)    This Hadith is reported in silsilah da’eefah of Shaykh Al-Albaani however there are several other Hadith with similar meaning such as :

‘’The one who repents from sins is like the one who has no sin’ Ibn Majah Declared Hasan by Shaykh Al Albaani

Why Was Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) Unmarried throughout His Life? Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan clarifies

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) was asked why Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah did not get married- was it due to [التبتل -intentionally staying away from marriage] and [التشدد -over stringency] and is his abstinence from marriage similar to the situation of the three Companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) mentioned in the following hadeeth:

[Anas ibn Maalik said: Three people came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asking about the worship of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). When they were told, it was as if they regarded it as too little. They said: Who are we in comparison to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)? Allaah has forgiven his past and future sins. One of them said: As for me, I will pray all night forever. Another said: I shall fast all my life and never break my fast. Another said: I shall keep away from women and never get married. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came and said: “Are you the ones who said such and such? By Allaah, I am the one who fears Allaah the most among you and I am the most pious, but I fast and I break my fast, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me] [Bukhari 5063]

Answer:

If this questioner became like Shaikhul Islaam in his Jihaad and knowledge, and marriage would stop him from Dawah and Jihaad, then he is excused. Rather, indeed Shaikhul Islaam abandoned it (i.e. marriage) because he was a Mujaahid in the path of Allaah. And also he was troubled (i.e. by the people of Bidah), imprisoned and punished. He was not available for marriage (i.e. he had no time).

Saudi Arabia (The Land of Tawheed)-A Thorn In the throats of the people of Nifaaq and Shiqaaq

Question to Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him)

What is your advice to the one who says that this dawlah (state) wages a war against the religion and causes repression against the du’at (callers)?

Answer: The Saudi state ever since it began has always aided the religion and its adherents. And it was not founded except upon this basis. And whatever it does at the moment in spending material wealth to support Muslims in every place, setting up centres and mosques, sending du’at (to other countries), printing books – at the forefront of which is the Noble Qur’an -, opening centres of learning and faculties of knowledge, and its judging by the Islamic Shari’ah (Tahkeemuhaa lish-Sharee’at il-Islaamiyyah), and also setting up a separate body for enjoining the good and forbidding the evil in every city – then all of this is a clear and evident proof of it’s aid to Islam and its adherents. And this is thorn (shajiyyun, lit. grievance, distress) in the throats of the people of hypocrisy (Ahl un-Nifaq) and the people of evil and dissension (Shiqaq). And Allaah is the Aider of His religion even if the pagans and the biased partisans may detest it.

And we do not say that this state is perfect from every single aspect and that it does not have any mistakes. Mistakes occur by every single person and we ask Allaah that he helps this state in correcting its mistakes.

But if this person (who makes such a claim) was to look at his own self, he would find mistakes that would prevent his tongue from speaking about others and make him feel ashamed of looking at others.

[Comments: So does Shaikh Salih al-Fawzan agree with the Surooriyyah, Khawarij of the Era in their unrestricted Takfir of the hukkam and Muslim states? And does he portray to the masses that the state is apostate because judgement by the Shari’ah is not to be found there, or because it is not the sole reference point, or that it is being replaced? Rather, his way and methodology is at odds with that of the newly-arisen foolish-minded whose methodology brings about Marxist type revolutions, great upheavals, the shedding of the blood of the innocent and the confiscation of their wealth!! And these words of Shaikh Salih al-Fawzan constitute a “thorn in the throats of the people of hypocrisy (Ahl un-Nifaq) and the people of evil and dissension (Shiqaq)”!! ]

Question: Respected Shaikh, yourself and the your brothers who are Ulamaa in this country are Salafis – and all praise is due to Allaah – and your method in advising the rulers is that of the Sharee’ah and as the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) has explained – and we do not purify over and above Allaah’s estimation of him -, yet there are those who find fault with you due to your neglect in openly rejecting the various oppositions [to the Sharee’ah] that have occurred. And yet others make excuses for you by saying that you are under the control and pressure of the state. So do you have any words of direction of clarification to these people?

Answer: There is no doubt that the rulers – just like people besides them – are not infallible. Advising them is an obligation. However, attacking them in the gatherings and upon the pulpits is considered to be the forbidden form of backbiting. And this evil (munkar) is greater than that which occurred from the ruler since it is backbiting and because of what results from backbiting such as the sowing of the seeds of discord, causing disunity and affecting the progression of da’wah.

Hence what is obligatory is to make sure advice reaches the rulers by sound and trustworthy avenues, not by publicising and causing commotion.

And as for reviling the Scholars of this country, that they do not give advice [to the rulers], or that they are being controlled in their affairs, this is a method by which separation between the Scholars, the youth and the society is desired, until it becomes possible for the mischief-maker to sow the seeds of his evil. This is because when evil suspicions are harboured about the Scholars, trust is no longer placed in them and then the chance is available for the biased partisans to spread their poison.

And I believe that this thought is actually a schemed plot that has come into this country, and those who are behind it are foreign to this country. It is obligatory upon the Muslims to be cautious of it.

[Comments: So will these newly-arisen foolish-minded ones ridicule Shaikh Salih Fawzan for believing in this plot as they have been ridiculing the Salafis for the past decade?! And the spread of Qutubiyyah from the angle and direction of the Ikhwan is what constitutes this schemed plot. Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan when he said: “And the end part of that is what we are living in now, the arrival of strange and suspicious ideas in our land in the name of ‘da’wah’ – through the hands of the various groups which are called by various names such as al-Ikhwaan al-Muslimeen, Jamaa’at ut-Tabligh and the Jamaa’ah of such and such. And the goal of all of them is the one and same and that is to drive away the da’wah of Tawheed and to take up is place [with something else]. And in reality, the purpose/intent of these groups is not different from the purpose/intent of those who have preceded them from amongst the enemies of this blessed da’wah – all of them desire to put an end to it. However the difference between them is only with respect to their plans/modes of action. And if not, then if these groups had desired – truthfully – da’wah to Allaah, then why do they overlook and abandon their own countries – from where they are dispatched to us? And yet these same countries are most in need of da’wah and rectification. They overlook their own countries and then they come out to battle against the land of Tawheed, desiring to change its correct course of rectification to one that is twisted – and they desire to deceive its youth and to bring about fitnah and enmity between them…” (Haqeeqat ud-Da’wah ilallaah of Sa’d Abdur-Rahmaan al-Haseen). But these foolish ones have never ceased to ridicule the Salafis on account of the same meanings contained in Shaikh Salih al-Fawzan’s statement above! If they only but knew!]
