The Four Categories of Optional Prayers – Shaykh ‘Uthaymīn (rahimahullah):

The Four Categories of Optional Prayers

Shaykh ‘Uthaymīn (rahimahullah):

The optional prayers are of four categories:

  1.  Optional prayers whose performance are restricted by time, such as Salātul Witr.
  2. Optional prayers whose performance are restricted to the obligatory (prayers), such as the Rawātib Prayers (e.g. two units before the Fajr prayer e.t.c)
  3. Optional prayers whose performance are restricted due to a specific reason, such as Tahiyyatul Masjid (2 units of prayer performed before sitting in the masjid).
  4. Unrestricted optional prayers, it is Sunnah to perform them at anytime, excluding the times of prohibition (e.g. when sun is setting etc).

The Sin of the Person Who Does Not Provide for Those Under His Care. Hadeeth: Explanation of Shaykh ‘Abdul Muhsin Al Abbad

Abū Dawūd reported the hadīth of Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr (Allāh be pleased with him). He said, “Allāh’s Messenger (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam) said”

“Sufficient sin for a man is that he neglects those he should provide for.”(1)

Shaykh ‘Abdul Muhsin (hafidahullāh):

“Meaning, a person sins due to the absence of spending and providing on the one spending upon is obligated.

Regardless of whether that was due to him not seeking sustenance for them (by working), or if he was wealthy but was stingy and tightfisted with them.

Or perhaps he spends and gives optional charity to those who aren’t close to him, neglecting those who it is obligatory for him to spend on, from those close to him, (wife, children etc), so by doing this he fulfils a recommended act but abandons an obligation.

Indeed he is sinful because he abandons that which Allāh (‘azza wa jal) obligated upon him, from spending upon those it is obligated to provide for.

This is similar to the previous hadīth(2), Spend it on yourself, then your child, then your wife, then your servant, then he (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam) said: You have better knowledge; meaning: after that, give charity to whomsoever you wish, or don’t, its entirely up to you.”

Slightly Paraphrased from Shaykh ‘Abdul Muhsin’s (hafidahullāh) explanation of this hadīth in his lessons on Sunan Abū Dawūd in the Prophets Masjid.

(1) Authenticated by Shaykh Al-Albāni Sahīh Sunan Abū Dawūd Hadīth Nos. 1692 Vol.1 Pg. 469
(2) Full wording of the Hadīth:

On the Authority of Abū Hurayrah, he said Allāh’s Messenger commanded with giving in charity. Then a man said, “Oh Allāh’s Messenger! I have a dīnār?”

So Allāh’s Messenger said “Spend it in on yourself”.

He (the man) said, “I have another?”

(Allāh’s Messenger) said “Spend it on your offspring.”

He (the man) said, “I have another?”

(Allāh’s Messenger) said “Spend it on your wife.”

He (the man) said, “I have another?”

(Allāh’s Messenger) said “Spend it on your servant.”

He (the man) said, “I have another?”

(Allāh’s Messenger) said “You have better knowledge.” (On how to spend it, or give in charity to.)

Attempting to Safeguard Oneself from Showing Off (Ar-Riyaa) – Al-Uthaymīn

Attempting to Safeguard Oneself from Showing Off (Ar-Riyaa) – Al-Uthaymīn

There are those who abandon acts of obedience [due to] fear of riyaa [i.e. showing off in acts of worship].

This [occurs] because Shaytān plays about with a person and beautifies for him [or her] the abandonment of acts of obedience out of fearing riyaa; rather you should perform acts of obedience, but there should not be -in your heart- [a desire] to show off.

Benefit of Contemplating on the Qurān – Al-Uthaymīn

Shaykh Uthaymīn (rahimahullāh):

Everytime a person ponders upon this Magnificent Qurān and is reminded by way of that which is in it [i.e. its commandments, prohibitions, admonitions etc], then indeed he receives blessing in his life, his deeds, his certainty and in all his affairs.

Signs of a Sound Heart and a Sick Heart – Shaykh Rabī

‎إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
Except him who brings to Allāh a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifāq (hypocrisy)]. Ash-Shu’ara:89

Shaykh Rabī ibn Hādi Al-Madkhalī (hafidahullāh):

Ponder, is your heart sound?

What is the sound heart?

The sound heart is that which fights Shirk and rejects falsehood, it accepts the truth and refutes falsehood with all its might, this is the sound heart. So, if you notice that you accept the truth from whoever brings it to you (you accept the truth; the truth guides you and your goal is the truth) then by Allāh your heart and intellect is sound.

What is the sick heart?

And, if you realise that you reject the truth when it comes to you from a certain direction, and you accept falsehood when it comes from another direction and you behave as if it is the truth; then know that your heart is sick.

Can You Take Benefit from Those who Oppose the Salafi Methodology – Shaykh Rabī

Shaykh Rabī ibn Hādi ʿUmayr al-Madkhalī [ḥafidahullāh] was asked: Is it permissible for us to listen to the audio [lectures of the] Hizbees?

He [ḥafidahullāh] answered: No, do not listen to the audio [lectures] of the hizbees, because their harm is much greater than their benefit. Seek benefit from the Book of Allāh, the Sunnah of Allāh’s Messenger [alayhis ṣalātu was salām], the books and audio [lectures] of the scholars of the Sunnah.

[That is] because the people of desires insert and conceal their poison in such a way that it is not noticed, except by the intelligent ones [i.e. the scholars and experienced students]. As for the Masākīn [i.e. those whose knowledge is very limited] amongst the smaller students of knowledge and the general folk, then verily this hidden poison has an effect on their intellects and against them, in ways they do not perceive.

Therefore, let there be great caution against listening to the people of bidah and the people [who are ascribed] to those groups that have deviated from Allah’s True Methodology; and they [ḥizbīs, the people of bidah etc] warn against the books that[propagate the sound creed, methodology etc] and the books that [propagate the authentic] Sunnah, so how can we call to their books and the lectures [in their audio tapes]?!

Glad tidings to Those Christians Who Submitted to The Message of The Final Messenger When it Reached Them- [An Excerpt From Al-Jawaabus Saheeh]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And when they (who call themselves Christians) listen to what has been sent down to the Messenger (Muhammad), you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they have recognised.  They say: ”Our Lord! We believe; so write us down among the witnesses. And why should we not believe in Allaah and in that which has come to us of the truth (Islaamic Monotheism)? And we wish that our Lord will admit us (in Paradise on the Day of Resurrection) along with the righteous people. So because of what they said, Allaah rewarded them Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise), they will abide therein forever. Such is the reward of good-doers.”5:83-85

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [rahimahullaah] said: Therefore, Allaah [Glorified be He] did not give a promise for reward in the Hereafter, except to those who believe in Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam].  They are the ones about whom it is stated:

[وَإِذَا سَمِعُواْ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ تَرَىٰٓ أَعۡيُنَهُمۡ تَفِيضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمۡعِ مِمَّا عَرَفُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۖ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱكۡتُبۡنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ   – And when they (who call themselves Christians) listen to what has been sent down to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they have recognised.  They say: ”Our Lord! We believe; so write us down among the witnesses]. [5:83]

The witnesses are those who testify to the Messengership of Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam]. They bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah and that Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] is the Messenger of Allaah.  So, they are the witnesses being spoken about.  Allaah said:

”Thus We have made you [true Muslims – real believers of Islaamic Monotheism, true followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah (legal ways)], a Wasat (just) (and the best) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger (Muhammad) be a witness over you”. 2:143

And for that reason, Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhu] and other than him stated [about the statement in the ayah: [فَٱكۡتُبۡنَا مَعَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ – so write us down among the witnesses]-Meaning:, ”Write us down with Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and his Ummah”.

Ask by Allah’s Face for the Ultimate Goal

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān was asked:

What is the intent of the Messenger’s statement (sallallāhu alaihi wa sallam), Do not ask for anything by Allāh’s Face except Paradise?

He (ḥafidahullāh) answered:

“Yes (that is correct), glorify Allāh’s Face (azza wa jal), and do not ask for anything by it from the coveted objects of the worldly life, only ask by it for Paradise – as a glorification of Allāh’s Face (subhānahu wa ta’āla) – which is the ultimate goal.”
