Historical theft: a brief dialogue with Jonathan Lieberman – Opinion
In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.
Allah, The Exalted, said:
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah; even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor, Allah is a Better Protector to both (than you). So follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest you may avoid justice, and if you distort your witness or refuse to give it, verily, Allah is Ever Well-Acquainted with what you do. [An-Nisaa. 135]

Jonathan Lieberman stated in the above article: Antisemitism has survived for millennia by adapting to the prevailing ideologies of the time. It has now adapted once again – morphing into historical theft. [end of quote]
Comment: Indeed, various forms of oppression such as antisemitism, tribalism, clanism, illegal partisanship, and nationalism have persisted for many centuries. Each time a Messenger was sent—among the 313 who came—they encountered resistance, and their followers faced persecution. From Nuh to Muhammad, every Messenger endured challenges stemming from the moral decay of their societies, which felt threatened by the superior virtue and guidance the Messengers presented. This resistance was often spearheaded by the elite. [Footnote a]
Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, confronted the pagans and those among the People of the Book who strayed from the teachings of Musa and Isa over 1400 years ago. Before him, Isa also encountered hostility from many Jews who rejected his message. Even today, a significant number of Jews continue to disbelieve in Isa, despite the fact that he was sent to guide them. Allah said:
And (remember) when Jesus, son of Mary, said: ‘O Children of Israel, I am the Messenger of Allāh to you, confirming what came before me of the Torah and giving good tidings of a Messenger to come after me whose name is Aḥmad.’ But when he (the prophesied messenger, Muḥammad) came to them (the Jews) with clear evidences, they said: ‘This is plain magic.’ https://www.thenoblequran.com/q/#/search/61_6
Similarly, modern ideologies such as communism, fascism, Zionism and the contemporary kharijites, such as ISIS, Boko Haram and others, have all been associated with their own forms of injustice and brutality. This indicates that the issue extends beyond just antisemitism; it reflects humanity’s tendency to stray into various misguided beliefs since the time of the Messengers.
Jonathan stated: In 2021, David Baddiel, a British Jewish comedian, screenwriter, and author, wrote a brilliant, incisive, and incredibly revealing book titled Jews Don’t Count. In it, Baddiel argues that Jews are treated differently from all other minorities, perceived as “too white” to warrant the same consideration as other victims of racism. [end of quote]
Comment: Anyone who claims that this religious group is too white, too black, or any other color, and suggests that their rights are insignificant, is making one of the most despicable and offensive statements possible. In truth, our Lord has instructed us to worship Him alone and to follow His final messenger, but He has also commanded us to treat one another with fairness and justice. Allah said:
Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful; those who are miserly and enjoin miserliness on other men and hide what Allah has bestowed upon them of His Bounties. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful torment. [An-Nisa 36-37]
Allah said:
O mankind, We have created you from a male (Ādam) and female (Eve) (making you all of equal lineage) and We made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another (and fulfil each other’s rights). Verily, the most honourable of you with Allāh is the most pious of you (and not the noblest in lineage or most affluent) (so do not be boastful and belittle others). Indeed, Allāh is all-Knowing, all-Aware.

Allah said:
And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. Verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge. https://www.thenoblequran.com/q/#/search/30_22
Jonathan stated: He posits that antisemitism is a “second-class racism,” one that is tolerated or even ignored by those who claim to fight against bigotry in all its forms. When I first read the book – prior to the seismic events of the past sixteen months – I felt it should be required reading for everyone. It explains, with remarkable clarity, the modern phenomenon of Jew-hatred, which persists even in supposedly progressive circles. For a more nuanced and historically expansive exploration of the topic, one need only turn to the writings of the late, great Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zt”l. [end of quote]
Comment: This requires concrete evidence as the primary step. Additionally, it is essential to have a precise and unequivocal definition of antisemitism to prevent any exaggeration, sensationalism, or attempts to suppress discussions about the actions of certain Zionists towards Palestinians while invoking the antisemitism argument. Once these issues are clarified, differentiated, and articulated, it becomes evident that anyone who treats antisemitism as a lesser form of racism or trivializes it is genuinely guilty of selectivism in a context that deserves unequivocal condemnation.
Jonathan stated: Rabbi Sacks wrote extensively about the mutation of antisemitism across history. First, they hated us because of our God. [end of quote]
Comment: Racism, whether modern or ancient, is a profound injustice that affects individuals of all faiths, including Jews, Muslims, Christians, and others. While there is a clear understanding of this issue, it is essential to recognize the nuances involved. Each allegation of antisemitism warrants a careful examination to differentiate it from legitimate critiques of Zionism. Failing to do so can inadvertently enable Zionists to commit acts of violence while cloaking themselves in the guise of victimhood. The animosity towards those who follow the teachings of the prophets is not exclusive to Jews; indeed, all prophets and their followers have encountered resistance. Historically, many Jews rejected the messages of Jesus and Muhammad, even allying with pagan Arabs against Muhammad. This is a well-documented fact. In earlier times, when the Children of Israel adhered to their prophets’ teachings, the hostility they faced stemmed from their unwavering faith, as highlighted in the verse:
وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ
And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Signs. https://www.thenoblequran.com/q/#/search/32_24
Thus, the broader assertion about being persecuted for our faith must be understood in context, as Allah does not alter the state of a people until they first change what is within themselves. Read:
Jonathan stated that Rabbi Sacks stated: Then they hated us because we “killed their God.” Then they hated us because we were different. Then they hated us because we tried to be the same. Next, they reviled us as a subhuman race without a home of our own – culminating in the Holocaust. [end of quote]
Comment: The ancient Jews and Romans did not take the life of the Noble Prophet Isa, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Even if that did occur, which is not true, it would be unjust to hold modern Jews accountable for actions that occurred long ago. Therefore, we must clarify to Jonathan that neither Jews nor Romans can be held responsible for something that did not occur. Furthermore, neither is Isa a deity nor the son of Allah. Allah said:
Surely, they have disbelieved who say: “Allah is the Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary).” But the Messiah [‘Iesa (Jesus)] said: “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers. Surely, disbelievers are those who said: “Allah is the third of the three (in a Trinity).” But there is no ilah (god) (none who has the right to be worshipped) but One Ilah (God -Allah). And if they cease not from what they say, verily, a painful torment will befall the disbelievers among them. [Al-Ma’idah 72-73]
Allah said:
And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,” – but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of ‘Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)]:But Allah raised him [‘Iesa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise. [An-Nisa. 157-158]
However, those ancient Jews were guilty of plotting to murder him as well as disbelieving in him. [Footnote b]
The assertion of being disliked for one’s differences warrants a deeper examination based on the context of the situation. If being hated stems from inherent characteristics like skin color, then we have already condemned such abhorrent behavior. However, if the animosity arises from actions that harmed others, it cannot be entirely classified as unjustified hatred unless those who express it have crossed ethical lines in their responses. On the other hand, if the disdain is directed at individuals attempting to conform to societal norms, this reflects a historical pattern where some nations have pushed for assimilation while simultaneously harboring distrust, often rooted in unfounded fears. The conflict between Christians and Jews, for instance, can be traced back to the rejection of Jesus by many Jews, compounded by the false narrative that they were responsible for his death. Furthermore, the dehumanization of certain groups is a grave injustice, yet it is disheartening to see some within your own community refer to Palestinians as less than human, which has contributed to the tragic events in Gaza. Both the Holocaust and the genocide in Gaza deserve unequivocal condemnation. [Footnote c]
Jonathan stated: And now, in a perverse historical irony, they hate us because we do have a home of our own, and because we dare to defend it. [end of quote]
Comment: This is yet another assertion that requires further explanation. Was this home originally yours? When did you first move in, and what has your conduct been like? The story of the Bani Israel who first settled in Palestine is widely recognized, along with the conflicts that arose between them and others, in contrast to those who were assisted by Christian Zionists in the appropriation of Palestinian land. You are not protecting a territory; instead, you are seizing land, uprooting its rightful inhabitants, and perpetrating acts of genocide. The disciples of Yusha bin Nun and Musa did not engage in such atrocities, which means that Zionism cannot be associated with the teachings of any of the Prophets of Bani Israel. [Footnote d]
Jonathan stated: The latest mutation: Historical theft
Now, a new mutation of antisemitism has emerged – one that builds on Baddiel’s observation that “Jews don’t count” and which has reached an even more malignant level: historical theft.
This involves the deliberate alteration of history to erase Jews from their own narrative. It facilitates the grotesque inversion that we are “Johnny-come-latelies,” colonial usurpers attempting to displace an indigenous people.
This phenomenon is not new. It began decades ago with the Palestinians manufacturing their own “ancient” peoplehood while simultaneously denying ours. [end of quote]
Comment: The statement that Jews don’t count is an overstatement; in reality, every individual holds value and deserves rights granted by their creator, regardless of whether they are believers or disbelievers in Allah or the seal of the Prophets, Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The notion of erasing Jews from their own history is also an exaggeration. A fair-minded perspective would emphasize that claims made by all groups, including Jews, should be backed by evidence. The situation of Jews in Palestine has been previously addressed in detail. This is an undeniable fact. Accusations of being colonial usurpers are evident in actions such as the eviction of Palestinians and the appropriation of their land, alongside the reality that you are not the original inhabitants of Palestine. It is also a historical fact that Bani Israel entered Palestine during the time of Yusha and established a presence there, but they were not the first inhabitants. While the entry of Bani Israel in ancient times is acknowledged, the real concern lies with Zionism and its narrative of ethnic cleansing. [Footnote e]

Jonathan stated: With the help of the unashamedly anti-Israel, antisemitic, corrupt, and morally bankrupt United Nations, the biblical and historical reality of Jewish existence in the Land of Israel for over 3,000 years has been steadily eroded. The world, largely ignorant and disinterested, has been conditioned to accept fiction as fact. However, last week, this historical theft stooped to a level that even the most cynical, world-weary Jew could scarcely have believed. [end of quote]
Comment: This same United Nations, often criticized as an anti-Israel, antisemitic, and morally compromised entity, was once under the influence of colonialist Christian Zionists. This organization facilitated the transfer of Palestinian lands and security into the hands of Zionists, who, at that time, were unabashedly anti-Palestinian and equally corrupt. [Footnote f] When their actions aligned with your desires, they were hailed as paragons of virtue; yet, when they challenge your inflated assertions, they suddenly become morally bankrupt. While your presence in Palestine since the era of Yusha Bin Nun, peace be upon him, is undeniable, it is crucial to recognize that you are not the original inhabitants of this land. Regardless of how long you may have resided there, historical evidence confirms that others occupied it before you. Thus, the truth remains unassailable: you are not the first to call Palestine home. The global community is neither ignorant nor indifferent, and it will not accept fabrications as reality. Such claims merely reflect a tendency towards psychological projection, as it is you who seek to impose your narrative and persuade others to accept your distorted truths. Any historical grievances you perceive will be scrutinized through the lens of factual evidence. Let us engage with reality and not be sidetracked by distractions.
Jonathan stated: The Auschwitz erasure
On Good Morning Britain, the flagship morning TV program of ITV – one of the UK’s largest broadcasting networks – a shocking act of historical revisionism unfolded.
During a segment on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, attended by King Charles, presenter Ranvir Singh stated: “Six million people were killed in concentration camps during the Second World War, as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay, or belonged to another ethnic group.” Six million people. Not six million Jews. Understandably, the Jewish community in Britain reacted with outrage. Complaints were lodged with Ofcom, the broadcasting regulator, prompting ITV to issue a mealy-mouthed apology: “In yesterday’s news, when we reported on the memorial events in Auschwitz, we said six million people were killed in the Holocaust, but crucially failed to say they were Jewish. That was our mistake, for which we apologize.”A mistake? The Cambridge Dictionary defines a mistake as “an action or decision that is wrong or produces a result that is not correct or not intended.” But was it really unintended? The deliberate erasure of Jewish suffering. I, for one, refuse to believe that any educated person in the Western world can simply “forget” to mention Jews in the context of the Holocaust and Auschwitz. This was no mistake. It was a calculated, deliberate attempt to airbrush Jews out of the most horrendous, heinous crime in history – because acknowledging Jewish victimhood no longer suits the fashionable narrative of Jews as oppressors, Nazis, and genocidal murderers. In this twisted ideology, Jews cannot be victims – because we are, supposedly, the oppressors. This is the latest insidious and dangerous form of antisemitism, perpetrated by the very societies that claim to champion tolerance and human rights. After a brief lull in antisemitism following World War II, Western societies have reverted to type, incubating this new malign mutation – historical theft – and disseminating it through social media, mainstream broadcasting, and to any receptive audience willing to listen. And, unfortunately, there are plenty of willing takers.
What can be done? There is no simple solution to this deeply embedded problem, but the fight must begin with education. David Baddiel’s book, Jews Don’t Count, should be mandatory reading for anyone who wishes to comment on antisemitism. The late Rabbi Lord Sacks’ works should be studied as essential historical and philosophical texts. But beyond books, we need immersive education – visits to Holocaust museums, discussions with survivors, and a relentless commitment to historical truth. Every journalist, presenter, and producer involved in the Good Morning Britain segment should be required to take a tour of the National Holocaust Museum, or its equivalent in their respective countries. They should be forced to confront the reality they so casually erased. I volunteer to be their tour guide. The broader implications of historical theft. This issue is not merely a Jewish problem – it is a societal one. The distortion of history is a precursor to more significant dangers. If historical truth can be manipulated so easily, then any group, at any time, can be vilified, marginalized, or erased. We have seen this pattern before. It starts with the Jews, but it never ends with the Jews. Those who engage in this intellectual vandalism – whether in the media, academia, or politics – must be called out and held accountable. No longer can we accept weak, insincere apologies after the damage has been done. No longer can we allow our history to be rewritten before our very eyes. Antisemitism has survived for millennia by adapting to the prevailing ideologies of the time. It has now adapted once again – morphing into historical theft, a denial not only of Jewish suffering but of Jewish existence itself. If we do not fight back with the full force of truth and education, this erasure will continue unchecked. And history has shown us, time and time again, that when antisemitism is allowed to flourish, the world suffers alongside us. [end of quote]
Comment: The intricacies surrounding Auschwitz and the tragic loss of Jewish lives remain a subject for historians to explore and condemn. [Footnote g] Nevertheless, as previously articulated in our previous articles, the act of taking even one innocent life—regardless of their identity—is profoundly significant in the Sight of Allah. Thus, whether the assertions made are accurate or erroneous, and irrespective of how one defines a mistake, it suffices to acknowledge that the murder of a single innocent individual constitutes a serious transgression. Those who perpetrate genocide, be they Nazis, Jews, Christians, Zionists, Hindus or Muslims, are reminded of this truth through the following link: https://salafidawahmanchester.com/2024/12/16/the-virtue-of-saving-a-life/
In addition, there are reports that certain groups have endured genocides of a magnitude surpassing that of the Jewish people, particularly in reference to the atrocities committed under King Leopold of Belgium, which reportedly led to the death of 10 million Africans. While this assertion may be contested by some, we reiterate that the loss of even a single innocent life, devoid of just cause, is a profound tragedy in the Sight of Allah. It is imperative that we eradicate antisemitism with the same vigor as we confront the brutality, theft, propaganda, and impunity associated with Zionism. Our response must be a robust commitment to truth and education, aimed at dismantling both antisemitism and the violence perpetrated by Zionist forces. History has consistently demonstrated that when oppression is permitted to thrive, the entire world bears the consequences, as evidenced by the suffering of countless Muslims who have witnessed the slaughter of their brothers and sisters at the hands of Zionists for over seven decades. Furthermore, we unequivocally denounce any Muslim factions that resort to the murder of innocent, non-combatant, or unarmed civilians, whether in Palestine or beyond. We invite you to listen to Prince Turki Al-Faisal for further insights.
