[2] Among The Noble Manners of Shaikh Al-Islam

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Allah, The Most High, said:

لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْءَاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًا

Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. [Al-Ahzab 21]

Imam Sufyaan Ibn Uyaynah, may Allah have mercy upon him, used to say:

Indeed, the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, is the greatest criterion [amongst mankind and Jinn] and all affairs are presented to him [for judgement and judged] based on his manners, path and guidance; so whatever is in agreement with this is truth, and whatever is in opposition is falsehood. [1]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

He (Messenger) is the preponderant standard (among the creation) based on his moral character, statements, and deeds through which the moral characters, statements, and actions (of others) are weighed; and the clear criterion by which, through following him, the people of guidance are distinguished from the people of misguidance.” [2]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

I have never seen (i.e. in his era) anyone who had all these qualities (of benevolence) more than Shaikh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah bless his soul. One of his senior companions used to say: ‘Indeed, I wish that I could be to my companions what he was to his enemies and those who opposed him’. I never saw him supplicate against any of them; rather, he would supplicate for them. One day, I came to him with the good news of the death of one of his greatest enemies, and the man who had shown him the most intense enmity and caused him the greatest harm. He rebuked me, expressed his displeasure, and said: “Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn”. He immediately went to the home of the deceased man’s family to offer his condolences, saying: ‘I shall take his place for you. There’ll not be a matter concerning which you may need assistance, except that I will help you with it.’ He stated words to this effect. The family were happy and supplicated for him, and held this conduct of his in the highest regard. May Allah have mercy upon him and be pleased with him. [3]
