‘Whoever hates (the evils) of his Soul for the Sake of Allāh is Saved from being Hated by Allāh”

“The (evil) of the soul is deserving of being hated for the sake of Allāh, and whoever hates (the evil) of his soul for the sake of Allāh, it is hoped that he will be saved from being hated by Allāh, just as Imām Fudayl Ibn Iyādh said, ‘Whoever hates (the evils) of his soul for the Sake of Allāh is saved from being hated by Allāh”. (1)

Footnote:

Allāh has clarified in His magnificent Book the ruling regarding Shirk and the ruling on what is lesser (in severity) than it. He has made it known that Shirk is unforgivable, while He forgives lesser than (sins) than it to whom He wills. Thus it is known through this that all sins lesser than Shirk are all under Allāh’s will, including acts such as unlawful killing, usury, disobedience to parents, false testimony, and the consumption of alcohol, among others. Additionally, sins such as gambling and severing family ties, along with all other transgressions, are also subject to His will (if He wills He will punish the doer before entry into paradise)

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغۡفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٲلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ‌ۚ

Verily, Allāh forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases]. [Surah An-Nisā’ Āyah 48]

Innovators Hide behind Great Imams of Sunnah to Spread their Innovations – Shaykh Rabee

This behaviour is one of the behaviours of the people of innovation and discord, it is inevitable that they (attempt to) hide behind a prominent figure. The Qadariyyah hid behind Al-Hasan Al-Basri (rahimahullah) and wrote, spread and composed treatises falsely and deceitfully attributing the deviant belief regarding Al-Qadr to Al-Hasan, although he was not one of them and perhaps they still claim that Al-Hasan Al-Basri was one of them – may Allah disfigure them and absolve him of them.

The Khawarij were hiding behind another great figure, Abu Al-Sha’tha Jabir bin Zaid, one of the elder students of Ibn Abbas behind whom the Khawarij hid.

These are the tricks of the people of innovation in religious matters, because their innovations do not spread if they do not hide behind the Imams of Islam, and you see that the Ash’aris attach themselves to the Imams, meaning: a man from the Ash’aris may have a Maliki school of thought [in the subsidiary matters], but he attributes his Ashari Aqeedah to Malik and his Sufism he attributes to Malik, and likewise the Maturidis claim to be affiliated with Abu Hanifah and they are Maturidis, and their school of thought is derived from the school of thought of Jahm ibn Safwan, and all the people of deviant paths hide behind the Imams of Islam, the Zaidis hide behind Zaid, the Rafidis hide behind Ja’far al-Sadiq and Ahl al-Bayt, because their rejected creeds do not spread except through tricks and hiding behind the Imams. This is what many people do. The Qutubiyyah hav not spread except due to hiding behind Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Baz, al-Albani, Ibn Uthaymeen, and other respected figures who are accepted by the people of sunnah worldwide. They say: We are students of Ibn Baz, we follow the methodology of the Salaf, and we are from the students of al-Albani, we are students of Ibn Uthaymeen. They deceive people that these imams are with them. Their tricks/deceit fool many young people who love knowledge, love scholars, love Islam, and love the truth. However, the tricks of these people deceive many people, and they fall into their traps.

Allah Exposes Those Who Feign Adherence to the Truth – Shaykh Abdus Salaam Burjis

Today there are many who ascribe to the Sunnah and adorn themselves with the clothing of the people of Sunnah, so much so that it is not possible (for many) to distinguish between the true people of Sunnah and other than them in an easy manner, and those who wear the garbs of Sunnah and pretend to adhere to the Sunnah do not do so except in order to destroy the unity of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’ah, attempting to split their ranks, and pitting them against one another. All of this in order to raise the banner of innovation and so that it’s armies prevail, however:

يَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ اللَّهُ ۖ وَاللَّهُ خَيْرُ الْمَاكِرِين

they were plotting and Allah too was planning, and Allah is the Best of the planners. (Al-Anfaal: 30)

Therefore, no matter how much someone infiltrates or hides among the People of Sunnah and no matter how deceptively he puts on their garbs, Allah will tear his cover away and expose his affair, a person does not hide (amongst the people of Sunnah), except that Allah, Glory be to Him, the Most High, brings his hidden affair out through slips of the tongue and expressions of the face.

Knowledge Should Increase a Person in Humility – Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullah)

Shaykh Uthaymeen in explanation of verse 54 of Suratul Maa’idah explains the affair of humility.

This verse comprises of praise for the one who is humble to the believers, he lowers his wings to them – i.e. he is compassionate and is humble for indeed these are characteristics which Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) loves. In opposition to whoever looks down upon his believing brothers then this is not praiseworthy in the sight of Allah, or with the creation. Due to this you should know that every time your eemaan increases you (should) increase in humility, and every time your knowledge increases it (should) increase you in humility, some people – We ask Allah not to make us from them – when his knowledge increases he puffs up with pride and becomes arrogant and he does not speak with the people except with disdain, and when the people speak to him he ignores them, and says “what did you say?” whilst he knows, he heard all of their speech but out of arrogance ignores them, and there is no doubt that this is a grave shortcoming, because every time your knowledge increases it’s a must that your humility increases.

Tafseer Suratul Ma’idah verse 54 of Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen (Allah have Mercy upon him)

Humility is a Cause for the Truth to be Accepted – Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullah)

Some benefits extracted by Shaykh al-Uthaymeen in explanation of verse 82 of Surah al-Ma’idah:

Humility is from the means for the acceptance of truth and gaining affection of the believers.

A benefit taken from this verse is that arrogance is a cause of rejecting the truth, humility is a means for the truth to be accepted, because a person should not hold himself to be infallible, so when the truth becomes clear to him he follows it. Umar (Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Abu Moosa Al-Ash’aree (Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Do not let an affair which you have performed today prevent you from returning to the truth tomorrow” or speech similar to this; meaning that you follow and adhere to the truth wherever it is and you humble yourself to the truth, humble yourself in face of the truth.

Does this humility in face of the truth mean that a person is lowly? No, because the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam) said, “Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah raises him” and whoever humbles himself to the truth is given success in following the truth, and a sign of this is if the truth becomes clear to you, you follow it immediately without hesitation or argumentation, if you hesitate or debate then it is extremely dangerous for you, Allah (The Most High) said,

And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), as they refused to believe therein for the first time

Al-An’am 6:110

Due to this, when they truth becomes clear to you, do not debate or argue, going left and right attempting to justify yourself, for indeed you are in danger. Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) said,

بَلۡ كَذَّبُواْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ فِىٓ أَمۡرٍ مَّرِيجٍ

Nay, but they have denied the truth (this Quran) when it has come to them, so they are in a confused state (can not differentiate between right and wrong). Qaf 50:5

For them truth is mixed/confused with falsehood.

Pay attention to this, you are a student of knowledge and it’s possible that someone opposes you from the people based upon evidence however you want to impose your opinion (upon others), this is a grave error!

Follow the truth wherever it is, the people will follow you wherever you are because the people desire and seek the truth, so if they see that you follow the truth when it becomes clear to you and you return to the truth, they will return (and follow the truth).

Therefore, humbling oneself to the truth in reality it raises, just as the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam) said, “Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah raises him” and in opposition to that is arrogance – Refuge is sought with Allah – arrogance causes the truth not to be accepted nor followed.

Strive for the Hereafter and Do Not Procrastinate – Shaykh Khalid Adh-Dhufayri

O servants of Allah! Remember that this abode is that of trials, tribulations and tests, so walk the path to the afterlife and beware of procrastination and negligence. Do not be among those who hope for (reward) in the afterlife without deeds, delaying repentance because of continued eagerness for this world and preoccupied with it. Indeed, the appointed time of death is hidden and death comes suddenly, so do not be deceived by Allah’s Forbearance because Allah gives respite but does not forget, and indeed Paradise and Hellfire are closer to you than your shoelaces.

Shaykh Abu Abdillah Khalid adh-Dhufayri (Allah preserve him).

[7] Salaf aspired to see that one closely examines his character

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Ibn Al-Jawzi [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “I find that the majority of Muhadditheen and students of hadeeth focus on acquiring hadeeth with the closest chain of transmission from the Prophet and gathering authentic Ahaadeeth on a specific subject in religion. On the other hand, most jurists concentrate on the science of debate and gaining an advantage. How can the heart be softened only through these pursuits?! Indeed, the pious predecessors aspired to see that a righteous individual should examine his character and guidance and not only give consideration to knowledge he has acquired, as his character and upright guidance are the fruits of his knowledge. Therefore, in order to soften their hearts, the students of Hadeeth and Fiqh should also study the lives of the pious predecessors and those pious ones who sufficed with the necessities of this life and abandoned those things which one can do without. Books have been compiled on the lives of well-known figures such as Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Sufyaan Ath-Thawri, Ibraaheem Bin Ad’ham, Bishr Al-Haafiy, Ahmad Bin Hanbal, Ma’roof, and others among the scholars.

[4] Salaf’s – (teachers and their outstanding senior students) – amazing respect for each other

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Muhammad Ibn Raafi said: I was with Ahmad (Imam Ahmad) and Ishaq in the company of Abdur Razzaaq when the day of Eidul Fitr arrived, so we went out with Abdur Razzaaq to the Musalla and with us were many people. When we returned, Abdur Razzaaq invited us to lunch, then he said to Ahmad and Ishaq, “Today I saw something strange from both of you. You did not say the Takbir”. Ahmad and Ishaq said, “O father of Abu Bakr! We were waiting for you to say the Takbir so that we could say the Takbir, but when we saw that you did not say the Takbir, we refrained”. Abdur Razzaaq said, “I was waiting for both of you to say the Takbir so that I could say the Takbir”.

Siyar A’laam An-Nubula a 9/566

Food for thought for those youth whose books and audio tapes not only isolates them from the study circles of their elders and contemporaries, but also makes them feel entitled  to strange or weak opinions and gives them the courage to argue against elder students when they are told to restrain their egos and adhere to the unambiguous knowledge based proofs.

[12] Ubaydullah Bin Adi Bin Al-Khiyar: Exemplifying Positive Engagement and Effective Communication with the Rulers

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Ubaydullah Bin Adi Bin Al-Khiyar narrated that Al-Miswar Bin Makhrama and Abdur-Rahman Bin Al-Aswad Bin Abu Yaghuth said (to me), “What prevents you from speaking to Uthman about his brother Al-Walid because people have spoken much about him?” So, I went to Uthman and when he went out for prayer I said (to him), “I have something to say to you and it is a piece of advice for you”. Uthman said, “O man, from you.” (Umar said: I see that he said, “I seek Refuge with Allah from you.”) So I left him and went to them. Then the messenger of Uthman came and I went to him (i.e. `Uthman), `Uthman asked, “What is your advice?” I replied, “Allah sent Muhammad with the truth and revealed the Divine Book (i.e. Qur’an) to him, and you were amongst those who followed Allah and His Messenger, and you participated in the two migrations (to Ethiopia and Medina) and enjoyed the company of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and saw his way. No doubt, the people are talking much about Al-Walid.” `Uthman said, “Did you receive your knowledge directly from Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ?” I said, “No, but his knowledge did reach me and it reached (even) to a virgin in her seclusion.” Uthman said, “And then Allah sent Muhammad with the truth and I was amongst those who followed Allah and His Messenger and I believed in whatever he (i.e. the Prophet) was sent with, and participated in two migrations, as you have said, and I enjoyed the company of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and gave the pledge of allegiance him. By Allah! I never disobeyed him, nor did I cheat him till Allah took him unto Him. Then I treated Abu Bakr and then Umar similarly and then I was made Caliph. So, don’t I have rights similar to theirs?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Then what are these talks reaching me from you people? Now, concerning what you mentioned about the question of Al-Walid, Allah willing, I shall deal with him according to what is right.” Then he called Ali and ordered him to flog him, and Ali flogged him (i.e. Al-Walid) eighty lashes. [Sahih Al-Bukhari. 3696]

[7] Al-Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan: Exemplifying Positive Engagement and Effective Communication with the Rulers

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah (The Most High) says:
وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمُ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡ هَـٰذَا بَلَدًا ءَامِنً۬ا وَٱرۡزُقۡ أَهۡلَهُ ۥ مِنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٲتِ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ مِنۡہُم بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ‌ۖ

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said, “My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day.” [Surah Al-Baqarah. Ayah 126]

Indeed, he (Ibraaheem- peace and blessings be upon him) gave priority to security over seeking sustenance because security is a necessity. Security is a necessity and the people cannot enjoy sustenance alongside fear; rather sustenance cannot be reached in the presence of fear. This is what the enemies desire- those who try to destabilise Muslim societies. They wish to disassociate the Muslims from their unity behind their Muslim rulers. This is what they desire – and they do not desire good advice (rectification etc) for the Muslims – in the name of fulfilling beneficial affairs, rectification, removal of oppression, and the like. All of this is lies and pretenses because if rulership slips away chaos will be at large, corruption will spread and the beneficial affairs which they say will be fulfilled will be non-existent. Corruption will be at large and there will not be rectification. Therefore, for this reason, there has to be rulership upon which the Muslims unite. Even if (such rulership) has shortcomings and negligence, the (people) should exercise patience because there is a prevention of that which is more severe and harmful in exercising patience. Shaikhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “It is not known of a group that rose against their Muslim Ruler, except that their state of affairs after his removal was eviler than their state of affairs whilst he was present”. This is something experienced at present! The rulers and heads of state who have been removed, what is the state of affairs of their countries after they were (removed)? There has not ceased to be fear, anxiety, chaos, bloodshed, etc. [Paraphrased] Listen below:
