[1] A Brief Look at Pseudo Researchers in Salafiyyah: [Observations on Some of Hasan Hasan’s Statements]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُ‌ۖ

“They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire”.

The person who lacks sound Imaan and creed revealed by Allah, the Creator of the universe, will find themselves in one of two situations: either their knowledge becomes corrupted or their intentions become corrupted. The first situation arises when they rely on assumptions and the second situation arises when they are driven by their desires, or one may combine both. [1]

Hasan Hasan, a researcher, said some things that showed he didn’t know much when he spoke about Jihadism, extremism, and militancy. He connected these methodologies with the terms Sunni and Salafi in an article he wrote against Al-Qaida, Jabhat An-Nusrah, and other groups like them. He said, “Ahrar al-Sham, a Salafi-jihadist group close to Jabhat al-Nusra”. He also stated, “Sunni jihadism has been characterized by transnational terrorism, suicide bombing, and ex-communication”. “The Isis ideology is generally viewed as identical to al-Qaida’s or the Saudi version of Salafism – adherence to fundamental Islamic tenets – and so there does not seem to be a serious effort to study it more closely”. Response

To begin with, it is undeniable that Hasan Hasan accurately characterised the trajectory of ISIS and Al-Qaida as identical ideologies because their course of action undoubtedly represents a novel and innovated creed. However, his ignorance in this particular field became evident when he linked them with Salafiyyah. The noble Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “You must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs [Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthmaan and Ali] after me. Adhere to it and cling to it firmly, and beware of newly invented matters in the religion, for every newly invented matter in the religion is an innovation in religion and every innovation is a path leading to misguidance”. Imaam Barbahaaree [may Allah have mercy upon him] said: It is not permitted for a man to say, “So and so is a person of the sunnah” until he knows that he combines the characteristics of the Sunnah, so it is not said of him, “A person of the Sunnah” until he combines all the Sunnah”. Al-Allamah Saalih Al-Fawzan [may Allah preserve him] said: The characteristics of the Sunnah are creed, knowledge, and adherence to the (path of the) As-Salaf As-Salih (the pious predecessors). But if there is nothing in him except a single trait of the (sunnah), he is not regarded to be from Ahlus Sunnah based on a single characteristic or one thing, then what about the one who has nothing from that? [3]

Hasan Hasan stated about the Imams of the mosques that were under ISIS’s control: “These Imams are generally asked to preach about three key concepts that are shared by all Salafi and jihadist groups, but ISIS has its own take on their functionalities, namely tawhid (strict monotheism), bida’a (deviation in religious matters) and wala wal baraa (loyalty to Islam and disloyalty to anything un-Islamic)”. Secondly, what is the true meaning behind Hasan Hasan’s concept of “Strict monotheism”? This is simply a deceitful ploy utilised by some researchers to confuse the matter and mislead the reader into believing that there are different forms of monotheism. However, Tawheed is the cornerstone of Islam and should be comprehended and followed in the same manner as the Prophet and his companions did. Read below

Hasan Hasan stated that one of the Khaarijites of ISIS said: “In the videos we produce, you see the sentence ‘deal with them in a way that strikes fear in those behind them’, and that verse speaks for itself. One more thing: the prophet told the people of Quraish, ‘With slaughter, I came to you'”. [End of quote]

Response

Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn Aas [may Allah be pleased with him and his father] was asked about the worst thing he saw committed by the Quraysh against Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him], so he said, “I was present when their notables met together one day in al-Hijr. They spoke about Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] and said, ‘We have never exercised patience in anything similar to that which we are exercising patience regarding this man. He has declared us fools, reviled our forefathers, criticised our religion, split our ranks and insulted our gods. Indeed, we have exercised patience regarding him in a great affair – or they stated some statement to that effect. So while they were engaged in that discussion, Allaah’s Messenger appeared and kept on walking until he touched the corner [of the Ka ‘bah, where the Black Stone is]; then he went past them as he performed Tawaaf around the Kabah. When he went past them, they made fun of some of the statements he was uttering, and I could see from [the expression] on his face that it [offended him]. Then he carried on and when he went past them the second time, they made fun of him in the same manner and I could see from [the expression] on his face that it [offended him]. Then he carried on and when he went past them the third time, they made fun of him in the same manner. Then he said, “O Quraish! Listen to me. By the One in Whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, I have brought slaughter to you”. The people were very shocked by his statement to the extent that there was not a man amongst them except that he froze as if there was a bird on his head, and those who uttered the harshest statements to him – before that – began speaking to him with the best words, saying, “O Abul Qaasim! Go away, go away, because by Allaah you have never been an ignorant person”. So he left them. Then the next day, they gathered at al-Hijr and I was with them. They said to one another, “You stated how impatient you are becoming with him, what you have heard about him and what he is saying, then as soon as he said something that alarmed you, you left him alone”. Whilst they were in that state, Allaah’s Messenger appeared and they all rushed towards him together, surrounded him and said, “You are the one who said such and such” – referring to what has reached them regarding the criticism he directs at their gods and religion. He said, “Yes, I am the one who said that”. Then indeed I saw a man amongst them grab the neck of his garment, so Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq [may Allaah be pleased with him] got up to defend him and said whilst crying, “Would you kill a man just because he says, ‘My lord is Allah?’ Then they left him and that was the worst incident of aggression I saw from the Quraish. In another hadeeth reported by Imaam Bukhaari, Urwa Bin Zubayr [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: I asked Abdullah Ibn Amr [may Allaah be pleased with him], “What was the worst thing the Mushrikoon did to Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him]?’ He said, “I saw Uqbah Bin Abee Mu’ayt coming to the Prophet while he was praying and put his sheet around his neck and squeezed it hard. AbuBakr [may Allaah be pleased with him] came and pulled Uqba away from the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] and said, ‘Do you intend to kill a man just because he says, ‘My Lord is Allaah’, and he has brought forth clear signs (proofs) from your Lord?'”. It is evident from the narrations mentioned above that the Prophet faced significant harm from the prominent figures of the Quraish. And regarding the statement of the Prophet, “O Quraish! Listen to me. By the One in Whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, I have brought slaughter to you”, Shaikh Saalih Aala Ash-Shaikh [may Allaah preserve him] said, “These people come forward and express their doubts by claiming that the Prophet said, ‘I have brought you slaughter’… ‘I have brought you slaughter’. They understand the word ‘slaughter’ as cutting off the head. However, this interpretation is completely incorrect and far from what is correct. One of the reasons why it is far from what is correct is that no one from the Ummah among the companions of the Prophet to whom this statement was uttered, has ever implemented it in this manner until in recent times when these Khaarijites have started implementing it in such a way. The Prophet’s statement “I have brought you slaughter” was made in response to the cruel treatment of captives and enemies by the Arabs and disbelievers before Islam. They would torture, punish, and humiliate them in various ways. However, the Prophet prohibited such actions and instead introduced the concept of killing through confrontation, specifically in the context of war between combatants. In this context, slaughter means to kill and engage in combat, rather than simply pulling out a knife as some may assume. Islam abolished all the torture and mutilation that the Arabs used to inflict on people during war, such as cutting off ears and mutilating bodies. The only thing that remained was the act of killing during war between combatants. If a person is not killed, they are to be treated with honour, protection, and respect, and they fall under the well-known rules regarding captives. This hadith has many implications and requires a detailed explanation”. [7]

Hence, we would like to inquire from the malicious and uninformed researchers, once they have gained knowledge about the accurate interpretation of this hadeeth from a knowledgeable Saudi Salafi Scholar, will they continue to associate the actions of the Khawaarij (ISIS, etc.) with Salafiyyah or Suniyyah?! By Allah, they have spoken a grave accusation and a vile remark. May Allah guide them or shield us from their defamatory words. Aameen.

Narrations Regarding The Khawaarij

The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon im] informed us about the khawaarij in many ahaadeeth. He said, “A people will come from the east who recite the Qur’an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion just as an arrow pierces its target and they will not return to it just as the arrow does not return to the bow”. [8]

He said, “During the last days [i.e. end of time], there will be young people with foolish dreams. They will say the best of statements amongst creation, but they will pass through Islam just as an arrow passes through its game. Their Imaan will not go beyond their throats”. [9]

He said, “There will be discord and division in my Ummah and a people will come with beautiful statements but evil deeds. They recite the Qur’an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will exit the religion just as an arrow leaves its target and they will not return until the arrow returns to its notch. They are the worst of the creation”. [10]

He said, “Some people from my Ummah will emerge from the east, who recite the Quran but it will not go beyond their throats. Every time a group of them appears it will be cut off. The Messenger repeated this and on the tenth time he said, “Every time a group of them emerges, it will be cut off, until Dajjaaj appears from their remnants”. [11]

Ubaydullaah Ibn Abee Raafi [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “The Khawaarij came out against Ali ibn Abee Taalib [may Allah be pleased with him] and said, ‘There is no judgement, except the judgement of Allah’, so Ali said them, ‘A statement of truth by way of which falsehood is intended'”. Imaam Wahb Ibn Munabbih [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “I was acquainted with the early period of Islaam. By Allaah, the Khaawaarij have never had a group except that Allaah caused it to split because of their evil state of affairs. Never did one of them publicize his opinion except that Allah caused his neck to be struck. Never did the Muslim Ummah unite behind a man from the Khawaarij. If Allah allowed the opinion of the Khawaarij to be accepted and established, then the earth would have been corrupted, the carriageways would have been cut off, Hajj to the sacred house of Allah would have ceased and the affair of Islam would have reverted to ignorance until the people seek shelter in the mountains as they did in the time of ignorance. If ten or twenty men among them were to rise, there would not be a man among them except that he claims the khilaafah for himself- every man among them would have ten thousand other men with him and all of them fighting each other, accusing one another of disbelief until the believer fears for himself, his religion, his life, his family, his wealth, and would not know where to travel or who to be with”. Imaam At-Tabari [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “The Khawarij came to a village and captured a man and his daughter. She said to them, ‘O people of Islaam! Verily, my father is an old man so do not kill him, and I am only a girl. By Allaah, I have never committed immorality and I have never harmed anyone’. They brought her out to murder her whilst she kept on saying, ‘What sin have I committed; what sin have I committed?’ She fainted thereafter and they killed her with their swords”. [14]

Indeed, we have all seen the terrible acts committed by the Khawaarij in our time. The Khawaarij show no mercy, not even towards each other, as Imam Wahb Ibn Munabbih stated, “If ten or twenty men among them were to rise, there would not be a man among them except that he claims the Caliphate for himself; every man among them would have ten thousand other men with him and all of them fighting each other, accusing one another of disbelief”. Indeed, this is exactly what was happening in Syria. Furthermore, it is important to remind the Islamophobes, ideologues, rabble-rousers, and demagogues about the heinous acts carried out by certain leaders within the globalist community. The khaarijites distort the teachings of the pure religion and engage in slaughter and transgression, while some globalists initiate hostilities, transgress boundaries, and commit acts of violence in the name of upholding the so-called ideals of the so-called civilized world. May Allah safeguard us from the malevolence of the khaarijites and spiteful secularists. Aameen.

The Humble Beginnings of The Masjid That Established Tawheed, Iman, The Sunnah, and Sound Rectification

The Masjid with a Dripping Ceiling and Occasionally Scorching Floor – A Reminder for Our Communities during Masjid Construction or Renovation

Anas Bin Malik [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated: “We used to pray with the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] in scorching heat, and if one of us could not put his face on the earth (because of the heat), he would spread his clothes and prostrate over them”. [1]

Imam Muhammad Ibn Saalih Al-Uthaymeen [may Allah have mercy upon him] mentioned that according to some scholars, this happened before the order to delay prayer in extreme heat. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] observed that it was difficult for people to perform Sujood on the hot ground, so he instructed them to delay the prayer until the weather was cooler. Some scholars explained that “in scorching heat” refers to a day that is very hot and the stone or the thing with which (the floor) of the Masjid is covered becomes too hot to prostrate on, even if the weather itself is not intensely hot. This is an explanation from another angle. [2]

Abu Salamah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated: I asked Abu Sa’eed [may Allah be pleased with him], and he was a friend of mine, (about the Night of Qadr) and he said, “We practiced I’tikaf in the middle third of the month of Ramadan with the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him]. In the morning of the 20th of Ramadan, the Prophet came and addressed us and said, ‘I was informed of (the date of the Night of Qadr) but I was caused to forget it; so search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. (In the dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud and water (as a sign). So, whoever was in I’tikaf with me should return to it with me (for another 10 days)’, and we returned. At that time there was no sign of clouds in the sky but suddenly a cloud came and it rained till rainwater started leaking through the roof of the Masjid which was made of date palm leaf stalks. Then the prayer was established and I saw Allah’s Messenger prostrating in mud and water and I saw the traces of mud on his forehead.” [3]

We have been blessed with comfortable Salafi Masaajid, therefore, it is important to remember the humble beginnings of the first Masjid, where the floor would become scorching hot and the roof would leak during rain. Despite these challenges, it was from this Masjid that sermons, teachings, and admonitions began, spreading the knowledge of Tawheed, Imaan, Sunnah, and sound rectification. We should be grateful for the blessings Allah has bestowed upon us – Masaajid where we hardly feel the heat in summer or the cold in winter.

An Ayah from The Qur’an Explaining The Three Foundations of Gratitude

Allah [The Most High] says:

لِتَسْتَوُوا عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِ ثُمَّ تَذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ رَبِّكُمْ إِذَا اسْتَوَيْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَتَقُولُوا سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ
وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

In order that you may mount on their backs, and then may remember the Favour of your Lord when you mount thereon, and say: “Glory to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts). And verily, to Our Lord, we indeed are to return!” [43/13-14]

Imam As-Sadi [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “Mentioned in this Ayah are the three pillars of gratitude and they are: acknowledgment of Allah’s blessings, proclaiming and speaking about Allah’s blessings, submitting to Allah and utilise these blessings to carry out acts of worship for the sake of Allah (alone).

Regarding Allah’s saying: [ثُمَّ تَذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ رَبِّكُمْ إِذَا اسْتَوَيْتُمْ – And then may remember the favour of your Lord when you mount thereon], this is a specific mention of the (favour) at the time in which the person enjoys those favours because blessings intoxicate many amongst the creation, makes them heedless, evil and ungrateful; therefore, this state in which Allah commanded (a person to remember Him for His Favours) is a medication for this destructive ailment. When the person recalls that he is surrounded by Allah’s blessings and that nothing is from oneself, but rather blessings are (from Allah) – its means are facilitated and its obtainment made easy (by Allah), one submits to Allah, humbles himself, thanks and praises Allah. And by way of this, he is given continuous blessings.

And regarding the statement of Allah: [وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ – And verily, to Our Lord, we indeed are to return], this is an acknowledgment of recompense and make preparations for it. The objective behind these favours is that they are an aid by way of which the slave (seeks) to fulfill that which Allah has commanded him (i.e. acts of worship and obedience etc). [4]

Shaikh Abdus Salaam Burgess [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated: “Being blessed by Allah to adhere to the pure Sunnah and walk on its righteous path is a tremendous favor that necessitates expressing gratitude and constantly remembering Allaah. This is because practicing the Sunnah in today’s era is a significant matter and also a strange thing”. [5]

We ask Allah:

اللهم أعني على ذكرك وشكرك، وحسن عبادتك
O Allah! Help me remember You, grateful to You and worship You in the best manner

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allah have mercy upon him] was asked: “The worst scholars are those who approach (visit) the rulers”. What is the level of authenticity of this hadith?

Response: I do not know about its authenticity, and if it were authentic, then it would imply an evil visit. If it is authentic, then it signifies a visit driven by vain desires, material wealth, and alignment with falsehood. (But), if the scholars neglect the rulers, they will become corrupt. If the scholars neglect the rulers and isolate them, the state of affairs will become corrupted, and the rights of the people will be violated. Therefore, goodness and Maslahah (i.e. what will bring about welfare and repel harm) is that the scholars visit and guide the rulers, and the rulers seek Tawjeeh (guidance) from them, Irshaad (the upright path to follow in all affairs), advise them regarding the avoidance of injustice, support the oppressed, and prevention of injustice against them, just as the scholars -from the time of the companions to the present day ours- visit them. As for the scholars abandoning and boycotting the rulers, and not visiting them, this is wrong – a blunder, and only those who do not know public welfare would suggest such a course of action. الجواب:
ما أعرف له صحة، ولو صح فالمقصود زيارتهم الخبيثة، لو صح، فالمراد بالزيارة التي للشهوة، والمال، والموافقة على الباطل.
وإذا أهمل العلماء الأمراء؛ فسدوا، إذا أهمل العلماء الأمراء، وانزووا عنهم؛ فسد الأمر، وضاعت الحقوق، فالمصلحة، والخير في أن يزورهم العلماء، ويرشدوهم، ويطلبوا منهم التوجيه، والإرشاد، والنصيحة عن الظلم، ونصر المظلومين، وإزالة الظلم عنهم، كما زارهم العلماء سابقًا من عهد الصحابة إلى يومنا هذا.
أما كون العلماء يتركونهم، ويهجرونهم، ولا يزورونهم؛ فهذا خطأ، هذا غلط، لا يقوله إلا الجهلة الذين لا يعرفون المصالح العامة

Imaam Al-Awzaa’ee [may Allah have mercy upon] wrote to Abu Abaydillaah – a governor of the khalifah- as follows: “I ask Allah [The Mighty and Exalted] to neither deprive you of sound intellect nor religion; make the best for you in what you are in- safeguard what you are acquainted with (i.e. upright deeds) and (safeguard you against) what you hate (i.e. the unpraiseworthy affairs) before being afflicted. And that Allah does not make you unaware of Him due to the fitna of covetousness or excessive work, bless you with recalling the little enjoyment in this world, bring to your attention the close approach of separation from it, makes your time within it influential (in a good way) and shows you compassion when it is taken away from you. Indeed, you are a person about whom I love to obligate myself to mention to him what Allah may bring about of good for him. So, I hope to advise you in private, love that your religious affairs are protected and evil is averted from you by the will of Allah. Idrees – the one who wrote to you – asked if you were able – may Allah have mercy upon you – to….” Then the Imam mentioned the request and finally supplicated for the governor”.

Imam As-Sadi [may Allah have mercy upon him] stated:

The greatest evils of knowledge and its inconsistencies occur as a result of acquainting oneself with the creation without its Creator, acquaintance with effects without the One who created those effects, acquaintance with causes without the One who created those causes, and acquaintance with the paths without its sound goals. The deficiency in this type of acquaintance is numerous and its harm is great, because indeed many atheists and those deceived by them are skilled in the natural sciences, but they confine themselves to it and are blind regarding its association with its Creator and Causer. And with regards to that which is placed in these natural sciences of wonders and secrets, they see themselves as those who know the wonders of the natural sciences – which none knows besides them – and the secrets which Allāh has placed in nature, so it gives them higher status over others and thus they become afflicted with vanity and self-deception. They confine themselves to it, consider it as the final outcome, the purpose and the goal, and thus occurs great deviation, deficiency in knowledge and intellect. If they knew and affirmed belief in the true Creator and the One Who Controls all the affairs of the Universe- the One who attached the means and causes to His Qadaa Wal Qadr [Footnote a], know that the means and causes are an abode of His Perfect Wisdom – for indeed Allāh [The Most High] is All-Wise, He placed things in their rightful places, gave the subtle affairs and big affairs an amazing orderly system and a firm association; gave everything that is sought after and the goals a means or cause, and a path that will lead to it, and due to this results and outcomes are based on the strength or weakness of the means or causes, and the strength or weakness of the performer of the deed- and then they bound these means, paths and outcomes to Allāh’s Qadaa Wal Qadr, their knowledge would have been perfected and they would have acquired of certainty that which cannot be acquired by those who have not reached their level; but they are glad (and proud) with that which they know of those paths whose tangible worldly outcomes they know and became haughty by way of them, so the statement of Allāh [The Most High] apply to them: [فلما جاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات فرحوا بما عندهم من العلم وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزئون – Then when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were glad (and proud) with that which they had of the knowledge (of worldly things): And that at which they used to mock, surrounded them (i.e. the punishment)]. [Surah Ghaafir. Aayah 83]

Allāh says:

وجعلنا لهم سمعا وأبصارا وأفئدة فما أغنى عنهم سمعهم ولا أبصارهم ولا أفئدتهم من شيء إذ كانوا يجحدون بآيات الله وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزئون

And indeed We had firmly established them with that wherewith We have not established you! And We had assigned them the (faculties of) hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and hearts, but their hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and their hearts availed them nothing since they used to deny the Ayat (Allah’s Prophets and their Prophethood, proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, and they were completely encircled by that which they used to mock at! [Surah Al-Ahqaaf. Ayah 26]

This is the greatest evil consequence of self-amazement and arrogance without exception, and the most perilous path through which many people become beguiled and deceived; therefore we ask Allāh to blessed us with sound knowledge that is supported by sound intellect, divine text and sound natural disposition – the beneficial knowledge which the servant knows in all its aspects, and the knowledge which links the subsidiary affairs to its (sound) fundamental principles, and its means, causes, effects and outcomes are ascribed to the One Who originated and created them. It is the knowledge whose possessor does not disassociate the creation from its Creator- neither disassociates its effects from the One Who made them effective, nor disassociates the wisdom, the secrets and the amazing orderly systems in the creation from the One Who Created and Perfected them, organised them in perfect order and brought them into existence prior to their non-existence. This is the knowledge that bears the fruits of certainty and through which tranquillity is obtained, and through which happiness and success is attained. It bears the fruits of beautiful manners and righteous deeds, beneficial to the religious and worldly affairs. [1]

Indeed, every fabricated belief system attracts its group of devoted followers, radicals, and tyrants. It is not unexpected that even those who claim to be enlightened overseers or experts in various fields can engage in criminal behaviour and disruptive actions. A significant number of us, having been educated in primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities, are familiar with Charles Darwin’s “Savages and Favoured Races,” which undoubtedly serves as a foundation for racial prejudice. Likewise, the path that was chosen by the arrogant and opinionated eugenicists led to an increase in oppression and crimes committed against the weak and vulnerable in society. Population eugenics involved urging individuals to procreate to produce desired traits, but the true believers in Allah and His Messengers have always distanced themselves from the hidden motives and ideas of those whose approach to sexual reproduction is solely aimed at advancing their materialistic or racist agendas – whether it is to create future workers for the communists or capitalists or to prevent other members of society from having children in the name of racial hygiene or to discourage them from doing so out of fear of poverty. Shaikh Abdul Waahid Abu Khadeejah [may Allaah preserve him] said, “According to scientists, another cause of poverty is population growth in countries that cannot afford to feed the extra mouths. Most rich countries have a stable population with roughly as many babies born as people dying. However, in poor countries, the populations seem to be increasing. Muslims, as a rule, are not allowed to use contraception due to fear of not being able to provide for their children – they learn from the Quran that Allah will enrich them from Himself from the ways and means that He provides. Population control measures are not from the Islamically legislated means to remove poverty – this is proven by the fact that there is sufficient food and resources in the world to feed the poor many times over daily! Added to that is the reality that large populations are a tremendous resource for a nation. Countries with large populations are quite often the wealthiest and have the fastest-growing economies. Note: In certain situations, contraception is permitted and I have discussed that elsewhere. Islam teaches that poor people must be helped with education, skills, charity, better infrastructure, and better health care. In this way the poor are not neglected and the wealth of the rich is purified in the sight of Allāh through the giving of charity. People have large families because the family unit helps each other and they care for their elders. Death of young children is much higher in poorer countries due to sicknesses and disease. So, Muslims have to help the poor, even if they are non-Muslims. The Prophet said, ‘Give charity to people of other Religions'” (Shaikh Al-Albānī said it was an authentic Hadīth, in As-Saheehah). [2]

The notoriety of the haughty and opinionated eugenicists is well-known and they were those individuals who pursued a futile endeavour to establish a genetically superior class and advocated for the reproduction of solely flawless individuals, thereby marginalizing anyone with even the most minor disability. The concept of “Positive eugenics” focused on promoting reproduction among individuals deemed to have so-called “good stock,” while “Negative eugenics” aimed to discourage or prevent reproduction among those considered unfit, such as the poor, criminals, or the feeble-minded. Unfortunately, some politicians and government officials embraced this sinister notion, placing the well-being of vulnerable members of society in the hands of individuals whose scientific knowledge lacked the compassion, mercy, and moral character prescribed by the Creator of the universe.

Francis Galton, born in 1822 and passed away in 1911, is recognized as the pioneer of the eugenics movement. His ideas were greatly influenced by Charles Darwin’s dubious idea of “The Origin of Species.” Galton’s primary focus was on the concept of heritability, particularly concerning intelligence. He aimed to address society’s perceived lack of talent and character by exploring the hereditary nature of these traits. He also believed that poverty, vagrancy, and crime could be attributed to the transmission of degenerate traits from parents to their offspring. His diabolical notions had a profound impact on certain intellectuals in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and various other nations during that era. Indeed, all praise and thanks are due to Allah, as this is not how true believers tackle societal issues, rather, this approach was merely an attempt to find scapegoats to rationalise the neglect of the vulnerable members of society. Some of these arrogant and opinionated eugenicists believed that preventing the impoverished from procreating would safeguard society by preventing the birth of individuals resembling them. Throughout the twentieth century, thirty-two American states enacted eugenic sterilisation laws, resulting in the sterilisation of approximately sixty to seventy thousand individuals. Nonetheless, despite the concerted efforts of contemporary writers and politicians to address numerous societal issues, their endeavours have proven futile in fostering moral rectitude, as Imam As-Sadi [may Allah have mercy upon him] aptly pointed out, “It is truly remarkable that while they approach the problem from various angles, they have neglected to address the fundamental issue of deviating from the path of Allah. This deviation, which has ensnared the majority of young individuals, has not been curbed by a return to sound faith and unwavering certainty. Instead, these individuals have been left to wander aimlessly in their misguided beliefs and vacillate in their deception. Consequently, the very social problems they seek to remedy give birth to further social ills because it is imperative to acknowledge that unless the solutions to these societal maladies are grounded in sound faith and a righteous religion, they will only exacerbate and deteriorate”. [3]

The Imam also stated: “It is undeniable that the mere pursuit of worldly sciences cannot bring about the purification of souls and the acquisition of virtue. This fact is supported by experience and evident circumstances, which demonstrate that despite the progress and extensive knowledge offered by these sciences, they have failed to foster spiritual growth and moral rectitude. (Rather) what Islam propagates is entrusted with this rectification, and it is what steers individuals towards truthful and authentic sources of knowledge while encouraging them to engage in good deeds and deterring them from evil. Islam serves as the rectifier of beliefs and manners, cultivating righteous thoughts and preventing depravity. The essence of what religion advocates for in terms of believing in the Unseen, which includes belief in Allah and His possession of Names, Attributes, and Actions of perfection; belief in Angels; belief in the consequences of one’s actions in this life and the hereafter, which can only be known through the Messengers, is what acquaints a person with the undeniable fact that genuine rectification can only be achieved through sound belief and the religion of Islam. Hence, despite the worldly sciences being able to rectify certain matters based on what people know in detail, they will never attain the same level of perfection and excellence as the knowledge possessed by the Messengers. The knowledge of the Messengers surpasses what can be achieved through worldly sciences and has a profound impact on the souls, unlike any other. This is because the souls only submit willingly through belief in Allah, belief in His Angels, belief in His Books, belief in His Messengers, and belief in the hereafter. Without these beliefs, voluntary submission is simply not possible, as it is widely recognised in human nature”. [4]

The Islamic Ruling On Limiting The Number of Children and Contraception

Imam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allah have mercy upon him] was asked regarding a husband and wife who agreed to refrain from having children, and whether such a decision is permissible. In response, he stated that their agreement is not permissible. Under Islamic legislation, it is forbidden for them to do this as long as the woman is physically capable of bearing children and making the Ummah numerous. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “Marry the childbearing, loving woman for I shall outnumber the peoples by you on the Day of Resurrection”. In another wording [of this narration the Prophet said], “Outnumber [i.e. the followers of the other] Prophets on the Day of Judgement”. That is because by way of this [i.e. having many children] those who worship Allah among the Muslims will be numerous, and the Ummah will be numerous and strong in opposing their enemies. It is impermissible for a man to abandon having children out of fear of either fatigue from seeking a livelihood, facing hardships, incurring expenses, or simply desiring to enjoy one’s wife and so on. It is also impermissible for a woman to engage in this act; instead, it is incumbent upon both of them to pursue the means to have children. They should be enthusiastic in their pursuit of offspring, aiming to increase the number of the Ummah and fulfill what the Prophet has stated. However, if the woman experiences significant pain as a result of a uterine illness or is only able to give birth through surgical means, it is permissible for her to refrain from having children. If the surgical procedure poses a potential risk to her well-being, or if she already has multiple children born closely together and finds it challenging to raise them, she may consider using contraceptive methods or taking preventative measures for a year or two – the period during the breastfeeding, to regain her strength and be better equipped to care for both her existing children and any future newborns. Responsibility of Muslim Doctors and Health Practitioners

A doctor must fear Allah when dealing with matters for which they are consulted, particularly those that involve the rights of individuals. This includes situations where a patient seeks a medical certificate, or when they require a note to confirm their fitness for employment. It also applies to consultations regarding specific medications, whether a woman’s health permits the use of contraception to avoid pregnancy, or if her condition necessitates the removal of her ovaries. Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] reported that the Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, [الْمُسْتَشَارُ مُؤْتَمَنٌ – The consultee is in a position of trust]. [6]

[الْمُسْتَشَارُ مُؤْتَمَنٌ – The consultee is in a position of trust]. [المستشار -The Consultee]: That is the one whose viewpoint is sought after in matters concerning Maslahah (an affair that promotes benefit and prevents harm). He (or she) is in a position of trust concerning what is asked and it is not permissible to deceive the one who consults by concealing the affair that would bring about benefit. [7] This hadith serves as proof, indicating that the consultee must consider the same course of action and opinion that they would choose for themselves. It is not permissible for them to guide their fellow Muslims towards something that they would not find pleasing. [8]

The Three Exceptional Worldly Blessings – [Must reflect on the adversity being encountered by our Palestinian bothers and sisters]

Ubaidullaah Ibn Mihsan Al-Khatmiy narrated from his father that the Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said: “Whoever among you wakes up [in the morning] safe in his property, healthy in his body and has his daily nourishment, it is as if he has been granted the entire world”’.

Al-Allaamah Zayd Bin Haadi Al-Madkhalee [may Allah have mercy upon him] said:

This hadeeth shows that those blessed with safety in the lands, physical health, houses to dwell in, and daily nourishment have indeed been blessed with a complete (worldly) blessing. Therefore, it is obligated for (them) to thank Allah constantly. This hadeeth shows that what suffices a person’s needs is a bounty and a blessing for which he must thank Allah [The Mighty and Majestic]. A person may strive to gather a lot of wealth, but he was created to worship Allah [The Mighty and Majestic] in the manner (commanded, legislated) by Allah and His Messenger [i.e. based on what is legislated and commanded in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah). If a person does this, then indeed he will achieve and attain success; but if not, he will fail and incur loss. Therefore, is there one who will receive admonition?!

This hadeeth shows that to be blessed with safety in one’s religion, honour, wealth and blood is (something very) valuable. These are among those matters whose establishment- in a society- will bring about a good life and security, but if security is not present, chaos will unravel in the society, the powerful will overpower the weak and the oppressor will overpower the oppressed, thus there will be an evil state of affairs and maybe evil consequences. Therefore, any society or land that has been bestowed a ruler amongst the Muslims and granted security in a region under his ruler-ship, it is obligatory to obey him (i.e. obey the ruler of the land in what is good and not to rebel against him, even if he has shortcomings) and he should be aided by the other lands as much as one is able. And what is seen as a fact in relation to this (hadeeth) is that whoever is blessed with enough food and drink, a dwelling place, means of transportation, security in his place of residence and good physical health, it is as if he has been given the entire world. Therefore, he should be thankful to Allah [The Mighty and Majestic] for that until he meets Allah- [i.e. until death comes to him].

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah [The Exalted] says

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ

O you who believe! Fear Allah, and be with those who are true (in statements and deeds). [9:119]

Indeed, it is evident that millions of individuals and many nations openly denounce the heinous acts committed by the Zionists, and this commendable stance deserves recognition. Nevertheless, it is crucial to avoid exaggeration and making assertions that contradict the infallible final divine revelation, as exemplified by the recent remarks made by the Bid’ee Yasir Qadhi regarding the followers of modern Judaism. He stated, “They are the real followers of Mosses! They are the ones who make the Children of Israel proud”. [End of quote]

However, it is crucial to maintain the only balanced approach that agrees with the infallible divine text to avoid exaggeration and to give proper recognition to what truly deserves acknowledgment.

Firstly, Shaikh Abu Iyaadh [may Allah preserve him] stated in his discussion regarding the connection between Zionism and Judaism: “However, it is important to note that not all Jews are involved in these intrigues and the Jews as a population have, throughout history, been subject to the whims and desires of their religious and political leaders, and have been made to undergo much persecution as a result. Also, there are many religious Jews who denounce Zionism as heresy in religion and cause of calamities for them and for Palestinians. Just as there are religious Jews who reject liberal and woke ideas used to disintegrate family and society. Hence, it is not correct to brush all Jews with the same brush, just as it is not correct to paint all Muslims with the brush of al-Ikhwān, Ḥizb al-Taḥrīr, al-Qaeda, ISIS and other extremists and terrorists”. Secondly, we now present the undeniable truth concerning the people of the Scripture after the advent of of the final Prophet Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him].

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:Abdullah bin Salam heard the news of the arrival of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (at Medina) while he was on a farm collecting its fruits. So he came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “I will ask you about three things which nobody knows unless he be a prophet. Firstly, what is the first portent of the Hour? What is the first meal of the people of Paradise? And what makes a baby look like its father or mother?”. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Just now Gabriel has informed me about that.” Abdullah said, “Gabriel?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Yes.” Abdullah said, “He, among the angels is the enemy of the Jews.” On that the Prophet (ﷺ) recited this Holy Verse:– “Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel (let him die in his fury!) for he has brought it (i.e. Qur’an) down to your heart by Allah’s permission.” (2.97) Then he added, “As for the first portent of the Hour, it will be a fire that will gather the people from the East to West. And as for the first meal of the people of Paradise, it will be the caudite (i.e. extra) lobe of the fish liver. And if a man’s discharge proceeded that of the woman, then the child resembles the father, and if the woman’s discharge proceeded that of the man, then the child resembles the mother.” On hearing that, Abdullah said, “I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah; O, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), the Jews (i.e. those among them who tamper with the Torah and killed the Prophets) are liars, and if they should come to know that I have submitted to Islam, they would accuse me of being a liar.” In the meantime some Jews came (to the Prophet) and he asked them, “What is Abdullah’s status amongst you?” They replied, “He is the best amongst us, and he is our chief and the son of our chief.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “What would you think if `Abdullah bin Salam submitted to Islam?” They replied, “May Allah protect him from this!” Then Abdullah came out and said, “I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” The Jews then said, “Abdullah is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us,” and disparaged him. On that Abdullah said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! This is what I was afraid of!” [Al-Bukhari 4480

Therefore, none can be the true followers of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) other than those who have submitted to Islam.

Shaikh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allah have mercy upon him] stated:

Whoever amongst the followers of the previous Prophets comes into contact with Muhammad’s [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] message must believe in him and aid him, even if they had a revealed book and another Prophetic tradition, just as Allah [The Exalted] says:

[ لَمَآ ءَاتَيۡتُڪُم مِّن ڪِتَـٰبٍ۬ وَحِكۡمَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ جَآءَڪُمۡ رَسُولٌ۬ مُّصَدِّقٌ۬ لِّمَا مَعَكُمۡ لَتُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهِۦ وَلَتَنصُرُنَّهُ – Take whatever I gave you from the Book and Hikmah (understanding of the Laws of Allah, etc.), and afterwards there will come to you a Messenger (Muhammad) confirming what is with you; you must, then, believe in him and help him]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Ayah 81]

Allah [The Exalted] says:

قُلۡ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيۡنَا وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَىٰٓ إِبۡرَٲهِيمَ وَإِسۡمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِسۡحَـٰقَ وَيَعۡقُوبَ وَٱلۡأَسۡبَاطِ وَمَآ أُوتِىَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَٱلنَّبِيُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيۡنَ أَحَدٍ۬ مِّنۡهُمۡ وَنَحۡنُ لَهُ ۥ مُسۡلِمُونَ

Say (O Muhammad): “We believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma’il (Ishmael), Ishaque (Isaac), Ya’qub (Jacob) and Al-Asbat [the twelve sons of Ya’qub (Jacob)] and what was given to Musa (Moses), ‘Iesa (Jesus) and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between one another among them and to Him (Allah) we have submitted (in Islam)”; then Allaah [The Exalted] said: [ وَمَن يَبۡتَغِ غَيۡرَ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِ دِينً۬ا فَلَن يُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِينَ- And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayaat 84-85]

A group amongst the Salaf [pious predecessors] stated that when this Ayah was revealed, some of the Jews and Christians said, “We are Muslims”, so Allaah said, [وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلۡبَيۡتِ مَنِ ٱسۡتَطَاعَ إِلَيۡهِ سَبِيلاً۬‌ۚ – And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence)]; so they said, “We will not perform Hajj”, then Allah said, [وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ – and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns)]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 97]

Anyone who does not believe that he is not obligated to perform hajj even though he has the ability, then he is a disbeliever based on the consensus of the scholars just as the Qur’an has made that very clear. The Jews and Christians do not consider Hajj to be obligated to them, so they are disbelievers.

Allah [The Exalted] says:

شَهِدَ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّهُ ۥ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰٓٮِٕكَةُ وَأُوْلُواْ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ قَآٮِٕمَۢا بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ‌ۚ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَڪِيمُ

إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمُ‌ۗ وَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُ بَغۡيَۢا بَيۡنَهُمۡ‌ۗ وَمَن يَكۡفُرۡ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ

فَإِنۡ حَآجُّوكَ فَقُلۡ أَسۡلَمۡتُ وَجۡهِىَ لِلَّهِ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِ‌ۗ وَقُل لِّلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡأُمِّيِّـۧنَ ءَأَسۡلَمۡتُمۡ‌ۚ فَإِنۡ أَسۡلَمُواْ فَقَدِ ٱهۡتَدَواْ‌ۖ وَّإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيۡكَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ

Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. Laa ilaaha illaa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except, out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, then surely, Allah is Swift in calling to account. So if they dispute with you (Muhammad) say: “I have submitted myself to Allah (in Islam), and (so have) those who follow me.” And say to those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and to those who are illiterates (Arab pagans): “Do you (also) submit yourselves (to Allah in Islam)?” If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message; and Allah is All-Seer of (His ) slaves. [Surah Al Imraan. Ayaat 18-20]

And after Allah [The Exalted] says: [ إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمُ‌ۗ – Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam], He commanded the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] to say, “I submit myself to Allah and also those who follow me are to submit”; and that he should say to those who received the Scripture [the Jews and Christians], and the unlettered Arabs [those who have no book and other than them], “Do you (also) submit yourselves (to Allah in Islam)?” The Arabs are included in the term Ummiyyoon [unlettered or illiterate] and everyone agrees with this; but as for other than them, then either they are included in this term or other clear statements which shows that Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] was sent to entire humankind and jinn.

Allah [The Exalted] says:

فَإِنۡ أَسۡلَمُواْ فَقَدِ ٱهۡتَدَواْ‌ۖ وَّإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيۡكَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرُۢ بِٱلۡعِبَادِ

If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message; and Allah is All-Seer of (His ) slaves. [3:20]

Therefore, Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] commanded the people of the Scripture to accept the same Islam which he commanded the unlettered Arabs to accept, and that they will be guided if they accept Islam, but if they do not submit, then Allah said: [فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيۡكَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ‌ۗ – your duty is only to convey the Message] – Meaning, “I only convey to you the message of my lord and He will judge you”. Therefore, all this shows that Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] conveyed to the people of the Scripture that which he conveyed to the unlettered Arabs, and that Allaah will judge them for abandoning Islaam, just as the unlettered Arabs will be judged.

Al-Bukhaari and Muslim reported the hadeeth in which is stated the contents of the letter sent to Heraclius – the king of the Christians: “From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Hercules, the leader of the Byzantines. Peace be upon those who follow the true guidance. I invite you to embrace Islam so that you may live in security. If you come within the fold of Islam, Allaah will give you double reward, but in case you turn your back upon it, then the burden of the sins of all your people shall fall on your shoulders.

قُلۡ يَـٰٓأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ تَعَالَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ ڪَلِمَةٍ۬ سَوَآءِۭ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَكُمۡ أَلَّا نَعۡبُدَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَلَا نُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُنَا بَعۡضًا أَرۡبَابً۬ا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَقُولُواْ ٱشۡهَدُواْ بِأَنَّا مُسۡلِمُونَ

Say (O Muhammad): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: “Bear witness that we are Muslims'” [3:64]

And what is even more explicit is that Allah informed us that Islam is the religion of the Prophets, such as Nooh, Ibraaheem, Yaqoob [peace and blessings of Allah be upon them] and their followers, including the disciples [may Allah have mercy upon them]. Islam is the religion of every era and place. Allah [The Exalted] stated about Nooh [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] the first Messenger to the people of the earth:

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَيۡہِمۡ نَبَأَ نُوحٍ إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦ يَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَيۡكُم مَّقَامِى وَتَذۡكِيرِى بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ فَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَڪَّلۡتُ فَأَجۡمِعُوٓاْ أَمۡرَكُمۡ وَشُرَكَآءَكُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا يَكُنۡ أَمۡرُكُمۡ عَلَيۡكُمۡ غُمَّةً۬ ثُمَّ ٱقۡضُوٓاْ إِلَىَّ وَلَا تُنظِرُونِ

فَإِن تَوَلَّيۡتُمۡ فَمَا سَأَلۡتُكُم مِّنۡ أَجۡرٍ‌ۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ‌ۖ وَأُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ

And recite to them the news of Nuh (Noah). When he said to his people: “O my people, if my stay (with you), and my reminding (you) of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah is hard on you, then I put my trust in Allah. So devise your plot, you and your partners, and let not your plot be in doubt for you. Then pass your sentence on me and give me no respite. “But if you turn away [from accepting my doctrine of Islamic Monotheism, i.e. to worship none but Allah], then no reward have I asked of you, my reward is only from Allah, and I have been commanded to be one of the Muslims (those who submit to Allah’s Will).” [Surah Yunus. Aayaat 71-72]

As for Ibraaheem [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him], Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَإِذۡ يَرۡفَعُ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمُ ٱلۡقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ ٱلۡبَيۡتِ وَإِسۡمَـٰعِيلُ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلۡ مِنَّآ‌ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ

رَبَّنَا وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا مُسۡلِمَيۡنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةً۬ مُّسۡلِمَةً۬ لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبۡ عَلَيۡنَآ‌ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

رَبَّنَا وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِيهِمۡ رَسُولاً۬ مِّنۡہُمۡ يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡہِمۡ ءَايَـٰتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيہِمۡ‌ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

وَمَن يَرۡغَبُ عَن مِّلَّةِ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمَ إِلَّا مَن سَفِهَ نَفۡسَهُ ۥ‌ۚ وَلَقَدِ ٱصۡطَفَيۡنَـٰهُ فِى ٱلدُّنۡيَا‌ۖ وَإِنَّهُ ۥ فِى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُ ۥ رَبُّهُ ۥۤ أَسۡلِمۡ‌ۖ قَالَ أَسۡلَمۡتُ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

وَوَصَّىٰ بِہَآ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمُ بَنِيهِ وَيَعۡقُوبُ يَـٰبَنِىَّ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰ لَكُمُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) and (his son) Isma’il (Ishmael) were raising the foundations of the House (the Ka’bah at Makkah), (saying), “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.” “Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage – Hajj and ‘Umrah, etc.), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. “Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own (and indeed Allah answered their invocation by sending Muhammad Peace be upon him ), who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Qur’an) and Al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islamic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. When his Lord said to him, “Submit (i.e. be a Muslim)!” He said, “I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).” And this (submission to Allah, Islam) was enjoined by Ibrahim (Abraham) upon his sons and by Ya’qub (Jacob), (saying), “O my sons! Allah has chosen for you the (true) religion, then die not except in the Faith of Islam (as Muslims – Islamic Monotheism).” [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayaat 127-132]

So, indeed Allah [The Exalted] informed us that He commanded Ibraaheem [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] with Islaam, who submitted and commanded his offspring with it, and Ya’qoob [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] commanded his children not to die except as Muslims. Allah says:

مَا كَانَ إِبۡرَٲهِيمُ يَہُودِيًّ۬ا وَلَا نَصۡرَانِيًّ۬ا وَلَـٰكِن كَانَ حَنِيفً۬ا مُّسۡلِمً۬ا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

إِنَّ أَوۡلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِإِبۡرَٲهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ وَهَـٰذَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Ibrahim (Abraham) was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a true Muslim Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism – to worship none but Allah Alone) and he was not of polytheists. Verily, among mankind who have the best claim to Ibrahim (Abraham) are those who followed him, and this Prophet (Muhammad) and those who have believed (Muslims). And Allah is the Wali (Protector and Helper) of the believers. [3: 67-68]

Allaah [The Exalted] stated about Yusuf the son of Yaqoob [peace and blessings of Allah be upon them], that he said:

رَبِّ قَدۡ ءَاتَيۡتَنِى مِنَ ٱلۡمُلۡكِ وَعَلَّمۡتَنِى مِن تَأۡوِيلِ ٱلۡأَحَادِيثِ‌ۚ فَاطِرَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَنتَ وَلِىِّۦ فِى ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأَخِرَةِ‌ۖ تَوَفَّنِى مُسۡلِمً۬ا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

“My Lord! You have indeed bestowed on me of the sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of dreams; The (only) Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Wali (Protector, Helper, Supporter, Guardian, etc.) in this world and in the Hereafter, cause me to die as a Muslim (the one submitting to Your Will), and join me with the righteous.” [12:101]

Allah [The Exalted] says about Moosaa [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him]:

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ يَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كُنتُمۡ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ فَعَلَيۡهِ تَوَكَّلُوٓاْ إِن كُنتُم مُّسۡلِمِينَ

And Musa (Moses) said: “O my people! If you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims (those who submit to Allah’s Will).” [10:84]

Allah [The Exalted] stated that the [former] magicians [may Allah have mercy upon them] who believed in Moosaa [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] says:

قَالُواْ لَا ضَيۡرَ‌ۖ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن يَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰيَـٰنَآ أَن كُنَّآ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

They said: “No harm! Surely, to our Lord (Allah) we are to return; “Verily! We really hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers [in Musa (Moses) and in the Monotheism which he has brought from Allah].” [26: 50-51]

وَمَا تَنقِمُ مِنَّآ إِلَّآ أَنۡ ءَامَنَّا بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا لَمَّا جَآءَتۡنَا‌ۚ رَبَّنَآ أَفۡرِغۡ عَلَيۡنَا صَبۡرً۬ا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسۡلِمِينَ

And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims.” [7: 126]

Allah [The Exalted] stated in the story of Sulayman [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] that Bilqees [may Allah have mercy upon her] said regarding Sulayaan’s letter:

إِنَّهُ ۥ مِن سُلَيۡمَـٰنَ وَإِنَّهُ ۥ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

أَلَّا تَعۡلُواْ عَلَىَّ وَأۡتُونِى مُسۡلِمِينَ

“Verily! It is from Sulaiman (Solomon), and verily! It (reads): In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful; “Be you not exalted against me, but come to me as Muslims (true believers who submit to Allah with full submission)’”. [27: 30-31]

And that Sulaymaan [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] says:

قَالَ يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلۡمَلَؤُاْ أَيُّكُمۡ يَأۡتِينِى بِعَرۡشِہَا قَبۡلَ أَن يَأۡتُونِى مُسۡلِمِينَ

He said: “O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me as Muslims [surrendering themselves in obedience?”] [27: 38]

And Allah [The Exalted] says that Sulaymaan [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said about Bilqees [may Allah have mercy upon her]: [وَأُوتِينَا ٱلۡعِلۡمَ مِن قَبۡلِهَا وَكُنَّا مُسۡلِمِينَ – Knowledge was bestowed on us before her, and we were submitted to Allah (in Islam as Muslims before her)]. [27: 42]

And Allah [The Exalted] says about Bilqees [may Allah have mercy upon her]:

قَالَتۡ رَبِّ إِنِّى ظَلَمۡتُ نَفۡسِى وَأَسۡلَمۡتُ مَعَ سُلَيۡمَـٰنَ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

“My Lord! Verily, I have wronged myself, and I submit (in Islam, together with Sulaiman (Solomon), to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).” [27: 44]

And Allah [The Exalted] stated about the Prophets of Bani Israaeel [peace and blessings of Allah be upon them]:

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَا ٱلتَّوۡرَٮٰةَ فِيہَا هُدً۬ى وَنُورٌ۬‌ۚ يَحۡكُمُ بِہَا ٱلنَّبِيُّونَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسۡلَمُواْ لِلَّذِينَ هَادُواْ

Verily, We did send down the Taurat (Torah) [to Musa (Moses)], therein was guidance and light, by which the Prophets, who submitted themselves to Allah’s Will, judged the Jews. [5: 44]

And Allah [The Exalted] says about the disciples:

وَإِذۡ أَوۡحَيۡتُ إِلَى ٱلۡحَوَارِيِّـۧنَ أَنۡ ءَامِنُواْ بِى وَبِرَسُولِى قَالُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا وَٱشۡہَدۡ بِأَنَّنَا مُسۡلِمُونَ

And when I (Allah) put in the hearts of Al-Hawarieen (the disciples) [of ‘Iesa (Jesus)] to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: “We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims.” [5: 111]

So, Allah [The Exalted] mentioned that all these Prophets [peace and blessings of Allah be upon them] and their followers were Muslims.

This is makes it clear that the statement: [وَمَن يَبۡتَغِ غَيۡرَ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِ دِينً۬ا فَلَن يُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِينَ – And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers] and the statement [إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمُ -Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam] do not specifically apply to those whom Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] was sent to [in his era]; rather it is a general ruling that applies to the early and latter generations, and due to this Allaah says:

وَمَنۡ أَحۡسَنُ دِينً۬ا مِّمَّنۡ أَسۡلَمَ وَجۡهَهُ ۥ لِلَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنٌ۬ وَٱتَّبَعَ مِلَّةَ إِبۡرَٲهِيمَ حَنِيفً۬ا‌ۗ وَٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ إِبۡرَٲهِيمَ خَلِيلاً۬

And who can be better in religion than one who submits his face (himself) to Allah (i.e. follows Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism); and he is a good-doer. And follows the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism – to worship none but Allah Alone). And Allah did take Ibrahim (Abraham) as a Khalil (an intimate friend). [4: 125]

And Allah [The Exalted] says:

وَقَالُواْ لَن يَدۡخُلَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَن كَانَ هُودًا أَوۡ نَصَـٰرَىٰ‌ۗ تِلۡكَ أَمَانِيُّهُمۡ‌ۗ قُلۡ هَاتُواْ بُرۡهَـٰنَڪُمۡ إِن ڪُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِينَ

بَلَىٰ مَنۡ أَسۡلَمَ وَجۡهَهُ ۥ لِلَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنٌ۬ فَلَهُ ۥۤ أَجۡرُهُ ۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦ وَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ

And they say, “None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian.” These are their own desires. Say (O Muhammad Peace be upon him ), “Produce your proof if you are truthful.” Yes, but whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah (i.e. follows Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin (good-doer i.e. performs good deeds totally for Allah’s sake only without any show off or to gain praise or fame, etc., and in accordance with the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger Muhammad Peace be upon him ) then his reward is with his Lord (Allah), on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. [2: 111-112]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Indeed, it is crucial to maintain the only balanced approach that agrees with the infallible divine text to avoid exaggeration and to give proper recognition to what truly deserves acknowledgment. Firstly, Shaikh Abu Iyaadh [may Allah preserve him] stated in his discussion regarding the connection between Zionism and Judaism: “However, it is important to note that not all Jews are involved in these intrigues and the Jews as a population have, throughout history, been subject to the whims and desires of their religious and political leaders, and have been made to undergo much persecution as a result. Also, there are many religious Jews who denounce Zionism as heresy in religion and cause of calamities for them and for Palestinians. Just as there are religious Jews who reject liberal and woke ideas used to disintegrate family and society. Hence, it is not correct to brush all Jews with the same brush, just as it is not correct to paint all Muslims with the brush of al-Ikhwān, Ḥizb al-Taḥrīr, al-Qaeda, ISIS and other extremists and terrorists”. Secondly, we now present the undeniable truth concerning the people of the Scripture after the advent of of the final Prophet Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him].

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allah have mercy upon him] stated:

Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] himself called the Christians and Jews to believe in him and in that which he brought, just as he also called the Arabs- who had no scripture- and all the other nations. He [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] related from Allah [The Exalted] that those amongst the people of the scripture and other than them are unbelievers if they do not believe in him and that their abode will be the fire – an evil destination. As for the Jews, they were his neighbours in the Arabian peninsula- at Madeenah and its surrounding areas, and Khyber. Indeed, the Muhaajiroon and the Ansaar believed in him without fighting; rather the signs of Prophethood and the proofs of his truthfulness were manifested to them so they believed in him. Many of those who believed in him were harmed and this is well known in the Seerah. Many Jews and Christians believed in him during his lifetime- some in Makkah and some in Madeenah, and many others were neither from Makkah nor Madeenah.

As for the Christians, then indeed the people of Najraan – from Yemen – came to debate with him [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] in his Masjid, so Allah revealed Surah Al Imraan regarding them. And when his proofs became manifest and it became clear to them that he was a Messenger of Allah sent to them, Allah commanded him that if they did not respond to his call, then he should call them for MUBAAHALAH [Footnote a] [i.e. invoke the curse of Allah on the liars]. Allah [The Exalted] says:

فَمَنۡ حَآجَّكَ فِيهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ فَقُلۡ تَعَالَوۡاْ نَدۡعُ أَبۡنَآءَنَا وَأَبۡنَآءَكُمۡ وَنِسَآءَنَا وَنِسَآءَكُمۡ وَأَنفُسَنَا وَأَنفُسَكُمۡ ثُمَّ نَبۡتَہِلۡ فَنَجۡعَل لَّعۡنَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلۡڪَـٰذِبِينَ

Then whoever disputes with you concerning him [‘Iesa (Jesus)] after (all this) knowledge that has come to you, [i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus)] being a slave of Allah, and having no share in Divinity) say: (O Muhammad) “Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women, and your women, ourselves and yourselves thenۡ weۡ prayۡ andۡ invokeۡ (sincerely)ۡ theۡ Curseۡ ofۡ Allahۡ uponۡ thoseۡ –who lie.”]SurahۡAalۡImraan. Footnote a: MUBAAHALAH: Al-Haafidh Ibn Hajr [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “There is a benefit in the story of the people of Najraan, and in it is that Mubaahalah is legislated against the opposer when he persists upon [falsehood] after the proofs have been manifested. Indeed, Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] did call to it, then Al-Awzaa’ee [rahimahullaah] and some of the scholars. And that which is well known from experience is that the affair of one who performs Mubaahalah – whilst he is one upon falsehood – does not extend beyond the year of the Mubaahalah. This occurred between me and a person who was fanatically supporting some of the heretics and after two months he could not stand up”. [An Excerpt from ‘Fat-hul Baari’ 12/195. Slightly paraphrased]

Imaam Al-Albaanee [may Allah have mercy upon him] was asked about the ruling on MUBAAHALAH in relation to worldly matters: Question: The hadith regarding the Najran delegation is well known when they came to the Messenger of Allah [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him], and then Allah revealed:

Then whoever disputes with you concerning him [‘Iesa (Jesus)] after (all this) knowledge that has come to you, [i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus)] being a slave of Allah, and having no share in Divinity) say: (O Muhammad) “Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves – then we pray and invoke (sincerely) the Curse of Allah upon those who lie.” [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 61]

So he called them to MUBAAHALAH, but they refused. It is well known to us that MUBAAHALAH is not to be done except in issues related to Aqeedah, but some people amongst the Muslims suggest this ruling in worldly affairs between him and his Muslim brother; meaning, if my Muslim brother owes me money but denies it, then would it be permissible to suggest this ruling between me and my Muslim brother?

Answer: May Allaah bless you. The answer to this question is that it is not permissible to suggest this in such a situation or suggest this Shariah ruling about material issues due to two reasons: Firstly, because this story is related to issues of Aqeedah as you have stated today. Secondly, as for the material issues, then Islaam has legislated a system and principles for it. He [i.e. the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)] said, “The burden of proof is on the claimant and an oath is a duty upon the one who denies the claim”. So, there is no room for Mubaahalah in this affair, which Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] legislated in that affair between His Messenger [peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him] and those Christians of the Najran who denied true Islamic Monotheism and persisted on the Trinity. So, this affair is not suggested in another issue besides this because neither is there a narration of the pious predecessors nor a hadeeth regarding it. However, if it must be done, then it can be suggested when two groups of Muslims differ in some ideas or Aqeedah- for example between the Mutazilah and Ahlus Sunnah. It is possible that if some Mu’tazilee is haughty after discussion and after evidences has been presented, then the Sunnee seeks Mubaahalah from him – that may the curse of Allaah be upon the liars. Therefore, it is possible to suggest this in such an affair. But as for the question with regards to suggesting this affair in issues related to material disputes, then this is not permissible. Jerusalem remained in Muslim hands for five centuries until it fell into the hands of the Christian Crusaders in the year 492AH. So they entered and wreaked havoc on it, killing about seventy thousand of its people, until, as some historians say, the only thing seen was the piles of severed heads, hands, and feet in the roads and squares, plundered, stormed Al-Aqsa Masjid and slaughtered those who took shelter there, until the Masjid’s courtyards were stained with the blood of worshipers and those who were in a state of bowing and prostration.

The leader of the Crusade, Raymond, proceeded to enter the Masjid’s courtyard, seeking his way among the corpses and blood that had reached its courtyard. The Crusader fighters entered with him, where they destroyed the furniture of the Masjid, and looted the lamps, which amounted to more than forty lamps of silver, each lamp whose price in weight was three thousand and six hundred dirhams, and they took more than twenty lamps of gold. The Al-Aqsa Masjid and blessed Jerusalem remained under the occupation of the invading Christians for a period of ninety-one years, until Allah facilitated (the Ummah with) Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi [may Allah have mercy upon him], who had great enthusiasm to guard the sanctities of the Muslims. Then when Sunday, the 15th of Rajab in the year 583 AH arrived, he camped with his army west of Jerusalem, then moved to the northern side and camped there. He restricted the Franks’ paths, and by throwing catapults, he laid siege on Jerusalem which led the Crusaders to hand over the city. This took place on Friday 27th of Rajab in the aforementioned year. [1]

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saalih Al-Uthaymeen [may Allah have mercy upon him] stated: Establish Islam among yourselves [I], then after that, Allah will aid His religion because Allah will not support so-and-so because he is so-and-so, or support this party because they are Arabs or support that party because they are so-and-so. He aids the one who establishes this religion (of Islam properly). Was Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi [may Allah have mercy upon him] of Arab by descent? He was not Arab, but Allah aided him against the Christians (Crusaders) because he established the religion ordained by Allah. [2]
