The Effect of Admonition On Our Hearts and Actions

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Jawzee (rahimahullaah) said:

Indeed the listener is awaken at the time of hearing admonitions, but when he leaves a gathering (in which) Allaah was remembered he returns to a (state) of impenitence and heedlessness. So, I pondered and came to know of its causes and saw that the people were in different (circumstances) in that regard. The general state of affairs is that the heart does not remain upon a distinct state of wakefulness after one hears an admonition, and this is due to two reasons:

Firstly: An admonition is like a whip and a whip does not cause harm after its use ceases.  Its pain is (felt) at the time it is used.

Secondly: Whilst listening to Admonitions, a person may be turned away from [worldly distractions]- his body and thoughts are isolated from the influences of the worldly life and he pays attention with his heart; however when he returns to the [worldly] preoccupations, he is captivated by its hassles.

There are those who are firm and do not go back and forth: They carry on in a state of [wakefulness and righteous action] without turning away.

There are those whose natural inclinations make them incline towards heedlessness at times, but at other times they are called back through admonitions to perform [righteous] actions.  They are similar to a grain of (corn) that is blown back and forth by the breeze.

And there are those who are not affected by [admonitions] except in accordance with the degree of what they heard- similar to water rolling on a smooth rock.  [Source: An Excerpt from ‘Saydul Khaatir’ page: 14. slightly paraphrased]

Why Is It That Not Every Haafidh of The Qur’aan Is Given Light From The Qur’aan? [Short Faa’idah By Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh From Sharh Muqaddimah Usool At-Tafseer]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad) Ruhan (an Inspiration, and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Qur’an) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path (i.e. Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism). The Path of Allah, to Whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Verily, all the matters at the end go to Allah (for decision). [Surah Ash-Shooraa’ Aayaat 52-53]

Shaikh Saaleh Aala Ash-Shaikh [may Allaah preserve him] said: Not every Haafidh of the Qur’aan has this light, rather the one who understands the Qur’aan and is guided by it – the one who adheres to its ordainments, declares lawful what the Qur’aan declares lawful and declares unlawful what the Qur’aan declares unlawful – has light in his heart and clear-sightedness based on how much light he has.

One of The Affairs That Shows Us The Great Importance of Tawheed: [The Beginning Soorah and Final Soorah In The Qur’aan Conveys The Three Categories of Tawheed]- [Faa’idah By Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr]

In The name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Opening Soorah of the Qur’aan (i.e. Faatiha) and closing Soorah of the Qur’aan (i.e. An-Naas)  gather The Three categories of Tawheed; namely: Tawheed Ar-Roboobiyyah (The Oneness of Allaah’s Lordship); Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah (Allaah is the only deity worthy of worship) and Tawheed al-Asmaa Was-Sifaat (The Oneness of Allaah in His Names and Attributes)

Soorah Faatiha:

See Highlighted verses as proof:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection). You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything). Guide us to the Straight Way. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).”

Soorah An-Naas:

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ

مَلِكِ النَّاسِ

إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ

Say: “I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind. The King of mankind. The Ilah (God) of mankind. From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one’s heart after one remembers Allah). Who whispers in the breasts of mankind. Of jinns and men.

A Brief Acquaintance With Some of The Early Heretics Who Sought to Corrupt The Deen And Failed – [Abdullah Bin Sabah, Al-Faraabee, Ibn Sinaa, Naseer At’Toosee and Others]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Shamsuddeen Al-Afghaaniy [rahimahumallaah] said:

Allaah [The Most High] guided mankind through Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and the clear manifest evidences given to him [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] – a guidance that could not be described by those who were well versed in the art of descriptions and [a guidance] that surpassed the knowledge of those with great perception. And by way of this guidance, Allaah [The Most High] opened the eyes of the blind ones, the ears of the deaf ones and the hearts of the heedless ones. Allaah [The Most High] united them on one religion-[the religion of Islamic monotheism] – and prior to that they were in complete disunity, enmity towards one another and followed corrupt creeds. Allaah united their hearts, and thus they became true brothers in Islaam by way of this great blessing. Thereafter, everything worshipped besides Allaah, such as graves, trees, stones and idols ceased to exist and all worship was established for Allaah alone. [Many] people followed the true Religion of Islamic monotheism and worshipped Allaah alone, except those whom Allaah willed that they were to remain as people of polytheism, hypocrisy and followers of the altered and distorted previous scriptures. The darkness of polytheism was dispelled and the banner of Tawheed was raised in the lands-amongst the Arabs and non-Arabs.

Allaah’s Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallaam] passed away, whilst Islaam was established and in authority-superseding all other ways of life and creeds. Then the rightly guided khulafaa of the Messenger [Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthmaan and Ali (radiyallaahu-anhum)] continued to adhere to the path of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] until the two powerful and great nations at the time-Rome and Persia-ended up in humiliation, degradation and in a state of fear after they had been in a state of security, and thus Caesar was restricted and besieged, and khosrau [or Chosroes] was subdued and destroyed.

Beginning of the Plot against Islaam

When the enemies of Islaam saw that they were unable to do away with this religion, they implanted their disbelieving agents within it – those who pretended to be Muslims in order to kindle confusion, trials and tribulations, and spread polytheism by exaggerating the status of the pious people and exalting their graves through [beliefs and practices] that were not ordained by Allaah. So, the Ummah [Islamic Nation] was put to trial through the plots of the [atheist, heretic and hypocrite] Abdullaah Bin Saba, who claimed Uloohiyyah for Ali Ibn Abee Taalib [i.e. that Ali (the cousin of the Prophet) had the right to be worshipped besides Allaah]. Abdullaah Bin As- Sabah’s followers were known as the Saba’iyyah and later on they were known as the Rawaafid (shiites), the ismaaliyyah (shittes), the nusayriyah (shiites) and other than them amongst the Baatiniyyah. They worshipped the graves and its inhabitants, and built places of worship and shrines upon those graves. So, through these practices, they revived the (corrupt ancient practices) of those Jews, Christians and the idol worshippers (who deviated from the straight path of the Prophets and Messengers of Allaah). This is how the practices of the worshippers of graves in this Muslim Nation manifested itself through the practices initiated by the rawaafid (shiites). [NB: The majority of the rawaafid Shiites presently live in Iran & Iraq, and their leader is Khumeini]

Secondly: The books of Greek philosophy that propagated the ideas of grave and idol worship were translated into Arabic, so many of those who attributed themselves to Islam busied themselves with these books, such as the likes of Al-Faraabee (a) Ibn Sinaa Al-Hanafi (b) Naseer At’Toosee –an advocate of disbelief and polytheism (c) and other than them amongst those who played tricks with Islaam, just as Paul played tricks with Christianity. They were influenced by the ideas of the Greek Philosophers, so they became callers to grave worship through Greek Philosophy. The practices of these people was rife within the ranks of the people of rhetoric amongst the Hanafi Maatooreediyyah (d) and the Ash-ariyyah Kullaabiyyah due to busying themselves with the Books of the Philosophers. They became callers to grave worship and callers to the creed of the Jahmiyyah at the same time, such as the likes of Taftaazaanee Al-Hanafi [The Philosopher of the Maatooreediyyah and Grave worshipers] and Jurjaanee Al-Hanafi [a caller to superstition]

[a] Al-Faraabee: Al-Faraabee said that Philosophy is more perfect than Prophet hood. Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said about him: ‘’Misguided; a disbeliever’’ Ibn Sinaa adopted his books and ideas of disbelief. [For further details concerning Al- Faraabee, See Majmoo Al-Fataawaa 2/67—86] [Dar At-Ta’aarud 1/10] [Ighaathatul Luhfaan 2/372-373]

[b] Ibn Sinaa: Imaam Ibnu Salaah (rahimahullaah) said about him: ‘’He was a devil amongst the human devils.’’ [See Fataawaa Ibn Salaah 1/209] [Also see: ‘Ar-Radd Alal Mantaqiyyeen’ of Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah 278-279] [‘Ighaathatul Luhfaan’ of Imaam Ibnul Qayyim 2/373-380] [Bidaayah Wan-Nihaayah’ of Imaam Ibn Katheer 12/43]

[c] Naasir At-Toosee: He was a magician and a minister of the Tartars. He rejected the ‘resurrection’. For further details, see: As-Sawaa-iq Al-Mursalah of Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) 2/790; 3/1077-1078

[d] Followers of the Jahmi Abu Mansoor Al- Maatooreedi Al-Hanafi [For further details, see the Book of Shaikh Shamsud-deen al-Afghaanee titled: ‘Al-Maatooreediyyah’ 1/205—376]

Thirdly: A people who were more dangerous and misguided than the aforementioned groups emerged amongst the Muslims with a manifestation of asceticism. They appeared in the garb of  righteousness – with tearful eyes, long flowing beards, elevated turbans, carrying large rosary beads and pretended to be calling to the Sunnah of the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam], whilst they secretly practised the disgraceful acts inherited from false religions. They attempted to mix blatant lies with the Qur’aan and the authentic narrations in order to corrupt the clear evidences found in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah. These deviant heretics are known as the Hulooliyyah, Ittihaadiyyah Grave Worshipers (1)], such as the likes of Hallaaj (309AH), Ibnul Faarid (632AH) Ibn Arabi (638AH), Ibn Sab’een (669AH) etc [Source: Juhoodu Ulamaa Al-Hanafiyyah Fee Ibtaal Aqaa-id Al-Qubooriyyeen’ of Shaikh Shamshud-deen As-Salafi Al-Afghaanee’ Vol 1 page 19-25]

Ibn Sinaa [The Heretic]

Question to Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan: What is your view regarding the one who praises Ibn Sinaa and places him within the ranks of the Muslim scholars?

Answer: Either this person is ignorant and is unaware of Ibn Sinaa’s state of affairs, therefore it is not appropriate that he should speak, rather it is obligated on him to keep quiet; or he is aware of Ibn Sinaa’s state of affairs and disbelief, so he affirms that for Ibn Sinaa and thus the ruling that applies to Ibn Sinaa is applicable to him, and Allaah’s refuge is sough; because he affirms Ibn Sinaa’s disbelief and praises him. This is very dangerous. [Ref 1] But some people praise Ibn Sinaa only due to the fact that he was a physician – praised due to a worldly science. And amongst the disbelievers, there are those who are more proficient than him in this field. But why do they mention Ibn Sinaa in particular? They say that because he attributes himself to Islaam and this is a credit to the Islaam. Therefore, we say: Islaam is free from Ibn Sinaa and not in need of him. He is not to be praised because he is a Baatini, a philosopher, Mulhid [Ref 2] [At-Taleeqaat Al-Mukhtasar Alaa Qaseedah An-Nooniyyah 3/1328]

Returning to Sin after Making Repentance – Shaykh Saaleh Aal Ash Shaykh

The Questioner says: I am a young man who has transgressed against himself greatly (meaning he was very sinful), and I have now followed the path to repentance – and all praise is due to Allaah – however, there are still some aspects of disobedience that entice me, so what is your advice to me and those like me? May Allaah reward you with goodness.

Answer:
And I say to you: May Allaah reward you for drawing near to Allaah the Mighty and Majestic and (for your) repentance and regret of what has passed (of sins), and from your caution from the effects of these sins and disobedience.
And the slave (of Allaah) if he was upon a (particular) state then becomes upright and repents (to Allaah) then indeed very few are those who do not keep some things that they used to do before of sins. But upon him (the questioner – or anyone in this situation) are 3 affairs:

  1. To attach great importance to his (act of) his drawing near to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to know that the reward for him being upright is Jannah. And (to know) that by way of sins, he could return to his previous state that he was previously upon.
  2. To be cautious of sitting with those who used to do those sins with him. Because they will facilitate (the sin) for him and so he could return to them (and their ways) after his repentance and drawing near to Allaah.
  3. To search for righteous companions of a similar age to him who will aid him upon goodness and will reduce the chances of him returning to those sins. And if what entices him entices him then he makes plenty of Istighfaar (asking Allaah for forgiveness) and he is determined (not to return to it).
“As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allaah’s religion – Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allaah is with the Muhsineen (Good doers).”
    And in the narration:
“One who seeks forgiveness from Allaah will not persist (upon a sin) even if he returns to it 70 times.”
So the slave (of Allaah) seeks forgiveness a lot, he knows that he sins so he seeks forgiveness. However, he doesn’t persist upon disobedience because he doesn’t care, rather he seeks forgiveness. Every time he does (the sin) and his soul entices him, he seeks forgiveness from Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. For indeed Allaah is Al Ghafoor (The One who forgives extensively) Ar Raheem (the Bestower of Mercy).

Words of Advice For The Smoker, Especially The One Who Smokes During Hajj and Umrah – [Admonitions By Shaikh Uthaymeen and Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] said:

Smoking is forbidden due to the evidences found in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and based on sound opinion.  Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said: [وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيماً  – And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you] [Soorah Nisaa: Ayah: 29]

It is well-known that smoking causes harm to the body which may appear sooner or later, and this is an affair agreed upon by the doctors of today after the advancement of medicine. Smoking also disfigures the teeth, the lips etc.

Also, Allaah [the Most High] said: [وَلا تُؤْتُوا السُّفَهَاءَ أَمْوَالَكُمُ الَّتِي جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ قِيَاماً – And give not unto the foolish your property which Allah has made a means of support for you]. Therefore, Allaah clarified the wisdom behind wealth and that He made it a means of support through which the Religious and worldly benefits are established. And it is well known that spending wealth on cigarettes neither supports Religious nor worldly benefits, rather it does the opposite.

And from the evidences in the Sunnah concerning the impermissibility of smoking is that the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] forbade the squandering of wealth, and squandering wealth is when it is spent in other than what is beneficial. It is well known that spending wealth on smoking is a spending in which there is no benefit, rather it is spending in that which is harmful.

As for sound opinion, then sound intellect necessitates that a person does not partake in that which harms him and wastes his wealth, whilst he is a believer and that he will be brought to account. Therefore, sound intellect necessitates that a person does what benefits him and leaves what harms him, and from the perfection of [one’s religion and character] is to leave that which is of no benefit.

The affairs are three: Beneficial things, Harmful things and Things in which there is neither harm nor benefit.  The first affair is sought after, the second affair is blameworthy, and regarding the third affair, a person refrains from it out of seeking perfection in his affairs, but there is no blame on him if he does it. [End of quote. Ref 1]

Question to Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr [hafidhahullaah]

What is your advice to the smokers?

Answer: We advise the smoker to seek after [great] benefit from this precious opportunity [i.e. Hajj] in this blessed land – this land from which the light of Eemaan started and spread to others regions of the Dunyah – by abandoning cigarettes. Many, many people abandoned smoking forever after coming to this land [i.e. for Hajj or Umrah]. Fear of Allaah, submission to Allaah and being truthful to Allaah entered the heart, so he [i.e. that pilgrim] abandoned smoking and never returned to it. There are many stories regarding this affair. A pilgrim told me that he started smoking from an early age. Once he was at Arafah with a cigarette in my hand, whilst the people -on his right and left-were supplicating, but he was smoking. So, he said to himself, ‘’Even at this present moment I am still smoking?!’’ So, he got rid of the cigarette and raised his hands [in supplication] together with the people. One of the supplications he made was that Allaah saves him from cigarettes and he did abandon smoking thereafter – forever. Therefore, the one who comes to this land should fear Allaah and utilise this opportunity to abandon smoking forever. There are a number of affairs that will also help him abandon smoking:

Firstly, every smoker should know that smoking is Haraam. Many scholars have issued verdicts to show that it is Haraam based on many evidences from the Qur’aan and the [authentic] Sunnah. [From them is the statement of Allaah]: ”And do not throw yourselves into destruction.” [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 195]. And Allaah said: ”He allows them as lawful At-Taiyibat [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khaba’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.)” [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 157].  Smoking is khabeeth.

Secondly, all doctors are unanimously agreed on the fact that smoking harms a person’s health and it is one of the greatest causes of cancer.

Thirdly, smoking is a waste of wealth and a means of placing wealth in the hands of the enemies [of Islaam]. So, the cigarettes harm his health and strengthen his enemy. If the smoker was asked, “You have been smoking for forty or fifty years, what benefit have you acquired from it?!” There is not a single benefit; however the harms are great indeed. He will realise the harm on his health, wealth etc Therefore, the one afflicted with smoking should fear Allaah and utilise this opportunity [in this blessed land] to abandon smoking forever, repent to Allaah and supplicate to Allaah to help him abandon smoking. What Imaam Abu Haneefah Did When His Business Partner Unintentionally Sold An Item That Had a Defect Without Informing The Buyer

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Ali Bin Hafs Al-Bazzaar [rahimahullaah] said, ‘’Hafs Bin Abdir-Rahmaan [rahimahullaah] was a [business] partner of Abu Haneefah [rahimahullaah] and Abu Haneefah used to supply him with [merchandise].  Once he sent merchandise to Hafs and informed him that there was a defect in such and such thobe and that he should make it known before selling it.  However, Hafs sold it and forgot to make that known and did not know who he sold it to.  When Abu Haneefah knew about it, he gave charity equivalent to the price of all the merchandise.  [Taareekh Baghdaad: 13/358]

The Importance of Giving Utmost Importance to The Heart – [A Brief Admonition By Imaam Ibn Rajab (rahimahullaah)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibn Rajab [rahimahullaah] said: When it is the case that the original (place) of Taqwah is in the heart, then none can determine its reality except Allaah (The Mighty and Majestic), as he (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ‘’Indeed Allaah neither looks at your images nor your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your actions.’’ And in another narration, [he (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)] said: Indeed, Allaah neither looks at your bodies nor your images’’ [1]

Indeed, there may be many a person with a good-looking image, or wealth, or prestige, or leadership in the worldly life, whilst his heart is deprived of Taqwah. And it may be that there is one with nothing (of the worldly life) but his heart is filled with Taqwah, so he becomes nobler in the Sight of Allaah (The Mighty and Majestic); rather this is mostly what happens. [2]

The Uncompromising Stance of The Sahaabah Against Those Who Openly Called to Bidah

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi Al-Madkhalee (may Allaah preserve him) said:

Indeed, the companions (may Allaah be pleased with them), such as the likes of Abdullaah Ibn Umar freed themselves from the people of bigoted partisanship and desires, as it was narrated by Imaam Muslim (regarding) the time when news reached (Ibn Umar) about those who innovated a doctrine to negate Allaah’s pre-decree; so he (Ibn Umar) said, ”If you meet those ones inform them that I am free from them and they are free from me”; then Ibn Umar (radiyallaahu-anhumaa) said, ”If one of them were to spend in charity gold equal to mount Uhud, it will not be accepted until they believe in the pre-decree of Allaah.”

The Mubtadi And Those Who Opposed The Methodology of The Sahaabah Are The Cause of Differing In The Ummah

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Saaleh Al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) stated:

The cause of the differing that take place between the callers is the differing in methodologies.  And had the callers (may Allaah guide them and grant them success) traversed a singular methodology; and that is the methodology of the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)– that which the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-sallam) and his companions were upon, then these differences would not have occurred.

Therefore, it is obligatory upon all the callers to make their methodology one–upon the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam); and that their call is (carried out) for the sake of Allaah and to make the word of Allaah uppermost.  Their call should not be for the sake of desires, raising individuals or parties; rather their call should be sincerely for Allaah’s Face-making Allaah’s word uppermost; following the Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and to aid His Religion.  (So) by way of this the differing will cease. [Source: Al-Ijaabaatul Muhimmah Fil Mashaakil Al-Mulimmah (page:221-222)]

Shaikh Zaid Ibn Hadee al Madkhalee (rahimahullaah) said:

The Mubtadi (innovator) is the cause for the splitting (in the Ummah). That is because splitting is connected to innovation and unity (upon the sound creed and methodology of the Salaf) is connected to the Sunnah.  The obligation of refuting the Mukhaalif (the opposer of the truth) is not lifted from the scholar due to anticipation of harm, unless it is harm he is not able to bear.  Then (in this case), Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.  The earth is not devoid of people of knowledge who will carry out refutation against the Mubtadi and the Mukhaalif.
