Some of The Many Benefits of Plural Marriage For Those Who Can Do Justice and Are Financially Able

Allah, The Most High, said:

إِنَّ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ يَهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ

Verily, this Quran guides to that which is most just and right. [Al-Israa 9]

Imam Ash-Shanqeetee, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

From the guidance of the Qur’an to that which is most just and right is that it allows (a man to marry) four wives. If the man fears that he cannot be just between them, he restricts himself to one or those whom his right hand possesses, as Allah said:

وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تُقْسِطُوا۟ فِى ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ فَٱنكِحُوا۟ مَا طَابَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ مَثْنَىٰ وَثُلَٰثَ وَرُبَٰعَ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا۟ فَوَٰحِدَةً أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ

And if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphan- girls, then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (those whom) that your right hands possess”. [An-Nisaa. 3]

No doubt the path that is most just and right is that which legitimises plural marriage (polygamy) due to perceptible matters known to every sensible person. And from those matters is that Allah made it a common phenomenon that men are fewer in number than women in the various regions of the world and are more often exposed to the causes of death in all walks of life. If a man were to be restricted to one wife, there would remain a great number of women deprived of marriage, so they (both men and women) will be strongly urged towards illegal sexual intercourse.

Therefore, turning away from the guidance of the Qur’an (in relation to) to this matter is one of the greatest causes of moral deprivation, degradation to the level of animals due to lack of safeguarding chastity, preservation of nobility, good moral conduct and manners.

Glorified and Exalted is (Allah) above all that evil they associate with Him, the All-Wise, All-Aware of all things.

كِتَابٌ أُحْكِمَتْ آيَاتُهُ ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتْ مِن لَّدُنْ حَكِيمٍ خَبِيرٍ

(This is) a Book, the verses whereof are perfected (in every sphere of knowledge), and then explained in detail from One (Allaah), Who is All-Wise, All-Aware of all things. [Hud 1]

No doubt the path that is the most just is that which legitimises plural marriage due to perceptible matters known to every sensible person. From those matters is that women are all readily prepared for marriage (i.e. when they reach the age of marriage and are not forced), whereas many men do not have the ability to fulfill the requirements of marriage due to poverty (i.e. because they are obligated to provide). Those prepared for marriage among men are fewer than among women. A woman is not hindered, whereas a man may be hindered by poverty.  If a man were restricted to one woman, many women prepared for marriage would have missed the opportunity for marriage. This would become a cause for loss of virtue, depravation and moral decadence, and the opportunity to preserve the human race would be lost.

If a man fears that he will not be able to deal justly between the wives, it is incumbent upon him to restrict himself to one or to those whom his right hand possesses because Allah has stated:

 إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ ۚ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

Verily, Allaah enjoins Al-Adl (i.e. justice and worshipping none but Allaah Alone – Islamic Monotheism) and Al-Ihsaan [i.e. to be patient in performing your duties to Allaah, totally for Allaah’s sake and in accordance with the Sunnah (legal ways) of the Prophet in a perfect manner], and giving (help) to kith and kin (i.e. all that Allaah has ordered you to give them e.g., wealth, visiting, looking after them, or any other kind of help, etc.)'[An-Nahl. 90]

It is impermissible to incline towards preferential (treatment) with regards to the Shariah rights (to be given to each of the wives), due to the saying of Allah:

وَلَن تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَن تَعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتُمْ ۖ فَلَا تَمِيلُوا كُلَّ الْمَيْلِ فَتَذَرُوهَا كَالْمُعَلَّقَةِ ۚ  

You will never be able to do perfect justice between wives – (with regards to what is hidden in your heart as to which of them is dearer to you although you love both) – even if it is your ardent desire, so do not incline too much to one of them (by giving her more of your time and provision) so as to leave the other hanging (i.e. neither divorced nor married)’. [An-Nisaa. 129]

As for the natural inclination towards loving some of them more than others, the human being is incapable of preventing this because it is emotional and the soul’s desire. This is what is intended by Allah’s statement: “You will never be able to do perfect justice between wives”. [An-Nisaa. 129]

Allah, The Most High, said:

مَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسًا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا

If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. [Al-Ma’idah. 32]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

If a person is bold enough to kill someone who does not deserve to be killed, this implies that he does make a distinction between the one he killed and other than him; rather he would commit this act whenever his evil calls him to that. Therefore, his bold attitude that led him to kill is as if he has killed all humankind. On the other hand, if a person saves a life and does not kill – whilst his soul calls him to do so – due to fear of Allah, this is as if he has saved the lives of all humankind because the fear of Allah he possesses stops him killing one who does not deserve to be killed. [Tafsir As-Sadi]

Africans under Belgian King Leopold II, Jews under Nazis, and some other narratives

Numerous voices have emerged, some affirming and others contesting, regarding the estimated number of Jews who perished under Nazi rule, much like the varying figures regarding the toll of King Leopold’s colonial endeavours on African lives. Whether the figure stands at 6 million Jews, more or less, or 10 million Africans, again subject to debate, the loss of even a single life, judged by any standard other than divine law, is a profound injustice. Both the Nazis and colonial powers have drenched their hands in blood, as have many others throughout history. Thus, the onus of research falls upon you to ascertain the true number of Jews lost to Nazi atrocities and the Africans who suffered under King Leopold’s brutal regime. Yet, the scourge of violence and oppression persists in our current age. Conflicts among Africans often arise from tribal animosities and political affiliations, or are exacerbated by neocolonial interventions, where the greed of external exploiters incites turmoil in African and Asian nations. In a similar vein, with the backing of Christian Zionists, [Footnote a] the Zionist movement has inflicted suffering and death upon Palestinians for over seven decades. The perpetrators of these atrocities in our era are well-known. We can all recall the Rwandan genocide and other conflicts, yet it is essential to remember that Europe itself has a history steeped in brutal wars among themselves before it sought to export its violence through centuries of colonialism. Once again, we reiterate that these contemporary perpetrators are merely the successors of the ancient bloodshed. Herein lie examples of those who have historically reveled in violence.

The Tyrants of Aad

Allah stated that Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, said to his people:

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِينَ

And when you seize, seize you as tyrants.

Meaning, when you want to attack with a whip or sword, you attack like tyrants, completely overpowering and being savagely violent- neither compassionate nor aim to discipline (within divine limits), nor contemplating on the consequences. (1)

Allah gave them great strength and it was obligated to them to use this strength in obedience to Allah, but they became boastful and haughty, and they said:

مَنۡ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً‌ۖ

“Who is mightier than us in strength?” [Fussilat. 15]

They utilised their strength in disobedience to Allah, fruitlessly and foolishly, thus, their Prophet forbade them from that. (2)

Their Prophet forbade them from that because it was done out of oppression. (3)

 

Fir’awn and His Blind Followers

Allah, The Most High, said:

إِنَّ فِرۡعَوۡنَ عَلَا فِى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَجَعَلَ أَهۡلَهَا شِيَعً۬ا يَسۡتَضۡعِفُ طَآٮِٕفَةً۬ مِّنۡہُمۡ يُذَبِّحُ أَبۡنَآءَهُمۡ وَيَسۡتَحۡىِۦ نِسَآءَهُمۡ‌ۚ إِنَّهُ ۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ

Verily, Fir’aun (Pharaoh) exalted himself in the land and made its people sects, weakening (oppressing) a group (i.e. Children of Israel) among them, killing their sons, and letting their females live. Verily, he was of the Mufsideen [i.e. those who commit great sins and crimes, oppressors, tyrants, etc.] [Al-Qasas. 4]

The Makers of the Ditch

Allah, The Most High,  said:

قُتِلَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأُخۡدُودِ
ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡوَقُودِ
إِذۡ هُمۡ عَلَيۡہَا قُعُودٌ۬
وَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفۡعَلُونَ بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ شُہُودٌ۬
وَمَا نَقَمُواْ مِنۡہُمۡ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤۡمِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَمِيدِ
ٱلَّذِى لَهُ ۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ‌ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ۬ شَہِيدٌ

Cursed were the makers of the Ditch- the large ditch with the fire, given fuel (in abundance); when they sat around it, watching what they had (ordered to be done) to the believers, who they resented for no reason other than belief in Allah- The Almighty, the Praiseworthy, the One to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and earth. And Allah is a Witness over all things. [Al-Buruj. 4-9]

قُتِلَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأُخۡدُودِ

Cursed were the makers of the Ditch.

This is an invocation against them to be destroyed. The makers of the ditch were disbelievers and there lived amongst them believers, so they wanted to force the believers to accept their religion, but the believers refused. They dug a ditch in the ground, kindled fire in it, sat around it, oppressed the believers and exposed them to the fire; so whoever responded to their orders was released and whoever held onto their faith was casted in the fire. This is an intense act of waging war against Allah and the believers, so Allah cursed, destroyed and promised them punishment, saying:

قُتِلَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأُخۡدُودِ

Cursed were the makers of the ditch.

Then Allah explained about the ditch and its makers, saying:

ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡوَقُودِ
إِذۡ هُمۡ عَلَيۡہَا قُعُودٌ۬
وَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفۡعَلُونَ بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ شُہُودٌ۬

The large ditch with the fire, given fuel (in abundance); when they sat around it, watching what they had (ordered to be done) to the believers.

This is one of the greatest types of despotism and hardheartedness, because they combined between their disbelief in Allah’s signs and willfully denied them, waging war against the believers, tortured them with this agonising torture and were present to witness the believers being casted in the fire. And reality is that they resented the believers for no reason other than a characteristic for which they are to be praised and through which depended their happiness (in this life and the next), which is that they were believers in Allah -The Almighty, The Praiseworthy. (4)

 

Hajjaj Bin Yusuf Ath-Thaqafee

After Abdullah Bin Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, was murdered, Al-Hajjaaj sent someone to Asma [bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), Abdullah’s mother] to come to him, but she refused to come. He again sent the messenger to her with the message that she must come, otherwise he would bring her forcibly by dragging her by her hair, but she again refused and said: By Allah, I will not come to you until you send one to me who would drag me by pulling my hair. So, he said: Bring me my shoes. He put on his shoes and walked on quickly puffed up with vanity and pride until he came to her and said: How do you find what I have done with the enemy of Allah? She said: I find that you wronged him in this world, whereas he has ruined your afterlife. It has been conveyed to me that you used to call him (Abdullah B. Zubair) as the son of one having two belts. By Allah, I am indeed (a woman) of two belts. One is that with the help of which I used to suspend high the food of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and that of Abu Bakr (making it out of the reach) of animals and, so far as the second belt is concerned, that is the belt which no woman can dispense with. Verily Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) told us that in Thaqif, there would be born a great liar and great murderer. The liar we have seen, and as far as the murderer is concerned, I do not find anyone else besides you. He (Hajjaj) stood up and did not give any reply to her. [Sahih Muslim 2545]

 

The Mongols

In the year 656 AH/1258 CE, Artughal’s son, Uthman, was born and it is to whom the Ottoman Empire was attributed. It was the year in which the Mongols, led by Hulagu, carried out a military expedition against Baghdad – the capital of the Ottoman Caliphate – which led to catastrophic events and great calamities. Imaam Ibn Katheer [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated, “They (i.e. the Mongols) killed everyone they were able to kill, including men, women, boys, Shaikhs, the elderly and the young men. Many people entered the wells, the habitats of wild animals and the gutters, and they hid for days without appearing. A group of people would gather in the inns and shut the doors, but the Tartars either opened the doors by breaking them or setting them on fire; then they pursued the people who fled to the highest places and killed them on the rooftops until blood flowed in the alleys. Indeed to Allaah we belong and to Him we shall return! Likewise, in the local mosques and the big central mosques, no one escaped from them except the Jewish and Christian citizens of the Muslim land, and those who sought refuge with them”. (5)

 

American Colonialists

The 13 American colonies’ population grew from about 2,000 to 2.4 million between 1625 and 1775 while displacing Native Americans from eastern North America. After the colonies declared independence in 1776 from Great Britain and formed the US, the settlers started to move west, clashing with and eradicating the Apache, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chinook, Navajo and Sioux tribes. Some of the names today are sadly used for American warfare helicopters and ubiquitous sport utility vehicles. The national holiday, Thanksgiving, celebrated in November, is traced to the 1620s when European settlers invited Native Americans to a feast. The settlers later killed the population and gave thanks to God for allowing them to slaughter the “savages.” The surviving descendants of Native American tribes live in poverty on federally recognized Indian reservations across the US. Almost 100 million indigenous people in the Western Hemisphere have been killed or died prematurely because of the Europeans and their descendants in five centuries, according to David E. Stannard in his book, American Holocaust: The Conquest of the New World. Around 12 million indigenous people died within present US geographical boundaries between 1492 and 1900, according to Russell Thornton in American Indian Holocaust and Survival: A Population History since 1492. Despite having unalienable rights — life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – as enshrined in the American Declaration of Independence, not all in the new colonies were considered equal. The colonies had a system of slavery, which European settlers carried as a practice into the Americas from the Old World, despite English Protestants praising themselves as Puritans. A conservative estimate of 35 million men, women and children were brought from Africa to the New World between the 16th and 19th centuries. Around 12.5 million of those brought to North America were used as free labor in fields and worked under grueling conditions, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database. The systematic repression of Africans continues to the present day in the US government application of laws, health and education. (6)

Colonialists In Australia: Professor Lyndall Ryan and her research team has found that there were at least 270 frontier massacres over 140 years of Australian history, as part of a state-sanctioned and organised attempts to eradicate First Nations people. For Ryan’s work, a massacre is defined as the deliberate killing of six or more defenceless people in one operation. If you investigate some of these massacres in depth you can see how systematic they were. Ryan’s work is in no means comprehensive as many massacres were not documented and many others covered up. Because of colonial genocidal actions like state-sanctioned massacres, the First Nations population went from an estimated 1-1.5 million before invasion to less than 100,000 by the early 1900s. (7)

Finally, it is important to reflect upon the tragic events that have unfolded in Palestine, a situation that has persisted for over seventy years. We continue to condemn the recent instances of violence perpetrated by some members of Netanyahu’s Zionist forces, but we must also unequivocally denounce any acts of violence committed by Muslims – whether Hamas or other than them- on October 7th- against unarmed civilians and non-combatants who identify with Judaism. Here we’ll mention some atrocities committed by some Zionist groups against Palestinians since 1948.

The Deir Yassin Massacre: Took place on April 9, 1948, near Jerusalem, during which between 107 to 254 Palestinians were massacred at the hands of the extremist “Stern” gang.

The Nasr al-Din Massacre: Took place in April 1948. Al-Lajjun Massacre: Took place on April 13, 1948, in a Palestinian Arab village in the Jenin District, where the Zionist Haganah gang attacked it and killed 13 people.

The Saliha Massacre: Took place in May 1948, during which 75 Palestinians were massacred.

The Abu Shusha Massacre: Took place on May 14, 1948, near the village of Deir Yassin, and claimed the lives of (50) citizens, including women, men, children, and the elderly.

The Beit Daras Massacre: Took place in northeastern Gaza on May 21, 1948.

The Tantura Massacre: Took place on May 22, 1948, in the occupied city of Haifa, and claimed the lives of about (200) Palestinians.

The Lydda Massacre: Took place on July 12, 1948, in the occupied city of Lydda, and resulted in the massacre of about (500) Palestinians, including (150) who were massacred inside the city’s Grand Mosque. The Zionists threw many of them alive into the town’s wells.

The Dawayima Massacre: Took place on October 29, 1948, when a battalion from the terrorist “Lehi” organization led by Moshe Dayan attacked the village and then began searching homes and shooting at its residents. Entire families were exterminated in the massacre, which resulted in the killing of 200 men, women, and children.

The massacres by some Zionist groups did not stop after the Nakba of 1948, but rather their frequency, intensity, and brutality increased in light of the use of more lethal and destructive weapons. Among the most prominent of these massacres were: The Sharafat Massacre, which took place in February 1951, in which 11 Palestinians were massacred, and the rest of the village’s people were displaced. The Bethlehem Massacre took place in January 1952, in which 10 Palestinians were massacred. The Qibya Massacre took place on October 14, 1953, in the village of Qibya, east of Jerusalem, during which (67) Palestinians were massacred, most of whom were women and children, and during which 56 homes were destroyed. The Qalqilya Massacre took place on October 10, 1956, when the occupation forces attacked citizens in the city of Qalqilya in the West Bank, during which about seventy citizens were massacred.

The Kafr Qasem Massacre took place on October 29, 1956, in which 49 Palestinians were massacred, including 11 children, when they were all returning home from work. The Khan Yunis Massacre took place on November 3 and 12, 1956, in which between 280 and 500 Palestinians were massacred.

In 1970, Bahr al-Baqar Primary School and Abu Zaabal factories were attacked, killing more than 150 Egyptian students and workers. In 1980, the extremist Jewish organization Kach attempted to blow up Al-Aqsa Mosque, and a shipment of explosives weighing 120 kg was discovered. The Sabra and Shatila massacre took place in September 1982. This massacre lasted three days, and its direct perpetrators were members of the Lebanese Phalange forces allied with the Zionists led by Ariel Sharon. The Ibrahimi Mosque Massacre took place on February 25, 1994, when a Zionist named “Barog Goldstein” stormed the Ibrahimi Mosque in the city of Hebron, and fired bullets and bombs at the worshipers. This massacre resulted in the massacre of 29 Palestinians. The Qana Massacre took place on April 18, 1995. [8]

“Every sin is a legacy inherited from a nation that was destroyed by Allah Almighty. Taking more than one is entitled to is a legacy from the people of Shu’ayb, peace be upon him. The corruption and arrogance displayed on earth are inherited from the people of Pharaoh, and the pride and tyranny are legacies from the people of Prophet Hud, peace be upon him. Allah, The Most High, said:

The chiefs of Fir’aun’s (Pharaoh’s) people said: “Will you leave Musa (Moses) and his people to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon you and your gods?” He said: “We will kill their sons, and let live their women, and we have indeed irresistible power over them.” (Al-A’raf 127)

An Unmatched Authority That Made the Grateful Humble and Would Have Completely Blinded and Corrupted The Boastful, Opinionated and Ungrateful in Our Era

Allah, The Most High, said:

قَالَ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ أَيُّكُمْ يَأْتِينِى بِعَرْشِهَا قَبْلَ أَن يَأْتُونِى مُسْلِمِينَ

قَالَ عِفْرِيتٌ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ أَنَا۠ ءَاتِيكَ بِهِۦ قَبْلَ أَن تَقُومَ مِن مَّقَامِكَ وَإِنِّى عَلَيْهِ لَقَوِىٌّ أَمِينٌ

قَالَ ٱلَّذِى عِندَهُۥ عِلْمٌ مِّنَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ أَنَا۠ ءَاتِيكَ بِهِۦ قَبْلَ أَن يَرْتَدَّ إِلَيْكَ طَرْفُكَ فَلَمَّا رَءَاهُ مُسْتَقِرًّا عِندَهُۥ قَالَ هَٰذَا مِن فَضْلِ رَبِّى لِيَبْلُوَنِىٓ ءَأَشْكُرُ أَمْ أَكْفُرُ وَمَن شَكَرَ فَإِنَّمَا يَشْكُرُ لِنَفْسِهِۦ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ رَبِّى غَنِىٌّ كَرِيمٌ

He (Sulayman) said: “O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne (Bilqees’s throne) before they come to me surrendering themselves in obedience?” An Ifrit (strong) from the jinns said: “I will bring it to you before you rise from your place (council). And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work.” One (a person) with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: “I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!” then when [Sulaiman (Solomon)] saw it placed before him, he said: “This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his ownself, and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly! My Lord is Ghaniyun Kareem [(a)] [An Naml 38-40]

Brothers and sisters, lets reflect upon what noble Prophet Sulayman, peace be upon him, said when he saw Bilqees’s throne, may Allah have mercy upon her, was placed before him within the twinkling of an eye?

Allah said and he said:

هَـٰذَا مِن فَضۡلِ رَبِّى لِيَبۡلُوَنِىٓ ءَأَشۡكُرُ أَمۡ أَكۡفُرُ‌ۖ

This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful!

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Meaning, “to test me through it”. He was not beguiled by his kingdom, authority and power as is the habit of the ignorant kings; rather he knew that this was a test from his Lord, this, he was afraid of not being thankful for these blessings. Then he clarified that being grateful to Allah does not benefit Allah; rather its benefits return to the grateful one, this, he said:

وَمَن شَكَرَ فَإِنَّمَا يَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦ‌ۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ رَبِّى غَنِىٌّ۬ كَرِيمٌ۬

“And whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly! My Lord is Ghani [Rich – Free of all wants], Kareem [Bountiful]”

Meaning, Allah is not in need of a person’s deeds, and He is generous, bestows abundant good to both a grateful person and an ungrateful person, except that being grateful for the blessings He bestows leads to more blessings and being ungrateful leads to its decrease. [(a)]: [Al-Ghani]: The Independent One Who is free of all need. The One Who has no need whatsoever of the creation. The One Who is free from anypoverty or need. The One in Whose Hand are the treasures of the heavens and the earth, and of this world and the hereafter. [Al-Kareem]: The Bountiful, The Generous One. Abundant in good. The One Who causes and makes easy every good. And Who bestows generously. The One so generous that He even bestows favors upon those who reject His favours, and use them as a means to disobey Him. I see the spots where afflictions will take place

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Usamah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Once the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood at the top of a (lookout from upon one) castle amongst the castles (or the high buildings) of Medina and said, “Do you see what I see? (No doubt) I see the spots where afflictions will take place among your houses (and these afflictions will be) as numerous as the spots where raindrops fall.” [Al-Bukhari 1878 and Muslim 2885]

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, stated in his explanation of this hadith:

The prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, possessed miracles, and among them is this one: The prophet stood at the top of a lookout, meaning, a high castle among the lookouts of Madinah. There were lookouts over there (i.e. Madinah) and they are strong towers where they would observe the enemy’s (movements, circumstances, situation). They would climb up these towers to watch the approaching enemy.

He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, climbed onto one of them and said: “Do you see what I see?” They replied: “No”. (This) is because they cannot see what the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah, sees; this is from [خصائصه ] and [معجزاته]. [Footnote a]

This (i.e. the statement “do you see what I see”) is a warning to the Ummah. He said: “(No doubt) I see the spots where afflictions will take place among your houses”, upon or close to your homes, because Fitna (affliction, temptation, etc) will engulf the people in their houses. This serves as a warning from him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that there will be Fitan (afflictions) that will reach the people.

What is common (or what normally takes place) is that when people stay in their homes, they are safe from Fitan, but when they exit them, they are exposed to Fitan, it afflicts them; however, the houses are not safeguraded from this (specific fitna). These are Fitan that will reach the people in their homes, while they are dwelling in them. This – and Allah knows best- is during the end times when media, satellite broadcasting, have advanced, as they say that evil can easily spread through these channels, reaching homes via screens and devices that relate events. The person looks at it while he is in his home- while he is at the furthest region of the earth- as if he is present at the scene. [Footnote b]

The Messenger does not speak out of desire, and indeed, this is something that will occur, and Fitan will invade the homes, entering them. This serves as a warning- a notification from him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to warn people. When these widespread Fitan arise, a person must be vigilant and protect his home from these Fitan. This carries difficulty, but with patience and hoping for Allah’s reward, Allah will aid him. وله عن
أُسَامَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ أَشْرَفَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَى أُطُمٍ مِنْ آطَامِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ هَلْ تَرَوْنَ مَا أَرَى إِنِّي لأَرَى مَوَاقِعَ الْفِتَنِ خِلاَلَ بُيُوتِكُمْ كَمَوَاقِعِ الْقَطْرِ
النبي له معجزات، ومن ذلك هذه المعجزة: أشرف النبي على اطم يعنى قصر مرتفع من اطام المدينة، كانت فيها أطام، وهي أبراج قوية يرقبون فيها أحوال العدو، يصعدون عليها، ويرتفعون عليها، ينظرون العدو المقبل عليهم
صعد على واحد منها، فقال: هل ترون ما أرى ، قالوا : لا. لأنهم لا يرون ما يراه الرسول، هذا من خصائصه ومعجزاته وهذا من باب التحذير للأمة
قال: (إِنِّي لَأَرَى مَوَاقِعَ الفِتَنِ خِلالُ بُيُوتِكُمْ) عند أو قريب من بيوتكم لأن الفتنة ستغشى الناس في بيوتهم، وهذا تحذير منه أنه سيكون
هناك فتن تصل إلى الناس
العادة أن الناس إذا بقوا في بيوتهم، يسلمون من الفتن، إذا خرجوا منها وتعرضوا للفتن، تصيبهم، لكن هذه لا تقي منها البيوت، هذه فتن تصل إلى الناس في بيوتهم، وهم ساكنون فيها، وهذا والله أعلم – في آخر الزمان، إذا تطورت وسائل الإعلام والبث الفضائي والأقمار الصناعية – كما يقولون،
فإن الشر ينتقل معها بسهولة، ويصل إلى البيوت بواسطة الشاشات بواسطة المعدات التي تنقل الأحداث، ينظر إليها الإنسان وهو في بيته، وهي في أقصى الأرض كأنه موجود عندها
والرسول لا ينطق عن الهوى، وإن هذا شيء سيحصل وإن الفتن ستغزو البيوت، تدخل عليها، وهذا من باب التحذير، هذا إخبار منه يحذر الناس، عند وجود هذه الفتن المنتشرة الإنسان يأخذ حذره، ويصون بيته من وصول هذه الفتن إليه، وهذا فيه صعوبة، ولكن مع الصبر والاحتساب يعينه الله

With Appreciation and Honesty – A Brief Exhortation to The Pragmatic Muslim Doctor

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Medical practice is one of the noblest professions, as it concerns the essence of human life. Its primary objective is to safeguard health, enhance physical well-being, and prevent the risk of illness (by the Will of Allah). The demand for medical care is great indeed, as individuals require it in various circumstances. Good health is essential for performing tasks and fulfilling obligations in this life, which underscores the very purpose of human existence. Allah, The Most High, said:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone)]. [51:56]

Therefore, the primary objective of medicine is to maintain health, enhance the physical condition of the body, and protect it from disease. One of the great merits of medicine is its role in preserving life, which is one of the five necessities that Islam safeguards, namely: religion, life, intellect, honour and wealth. Medicine serves to assist both individuals and society in averting harm. It is well known that the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stated: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” [Ibn Majah 2341]

It represents the fulfillment of the duty to co-operate in righteousness and piety from a different perspective. In this context, the doctor embodies Allah’s command:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ

Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety).. [5:2]

It represents the fulfilment of the Messenger’s statement found in the hadith of Usamah Bin Sharik, who said: A Bedouin said, “O Messenger of Allah! Should we seek medical treatment?” He replied: 

“Seek medical treatment, for Allah has not created any disease except that He has also created a remedy for it, except for one disease: old age”. [Abu Dawud Number 3855]

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, referred to old age as a disease – the weakness of old age; but not one of the diseases that are transient ailments due to the different physical features and changing atmospheres; but rather, old age is likened to disease because it brings harm and diseases that may be followed by death. [a]

The doctor should hope for the reward and (good) recompense from Allah, being sincere in their profession and not engage in the practice of medicine solely for the sake of recognition; rather, their commitment should be sincere, with a focus on seeking Allah’s reward. The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

“Actions are (judged) by intentions and every person will have what he intended. So he whose migration was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger. And he whose migration was for some worldly (gain) or for a woman to marry, then his migration is to that for which he migrated”. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

A doctor must fear Allah concerning the matters for which they are sought for advice, particularly those pertaining to the rights of individuals. This includes situations where a patient requests a medical certificate for illness, seeks documentation to verify their fitness for work, or inquires about specific medications. This also includes assessments regarding a woman’s health status to determine if she can safely use contraception to prevent pregnancy, or if her condition necessitates the removal of her ovaries. The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “The consultee is in a position of trust”. [Sahih Abu Dawud 5128]

The “Consultee” is the person whose opinion is sought concerning a matter of Maslahah, which pertains to issues that brings about benefit and prevent harm. This individual holds a position of trust regarding the inquiries made of him, and it is impermissible to mislead the the one seeking advice by withholding information that could bring about beneficial outcomes. [b]

This hadith is an evidence, showing that the consultee has to (advise) with the course of action and opinion -in relation to the consultation – that which he would do for himself. And it is not permissible that he directs his Muslim brother to something he would not be pleased with for himself. [c]

The Muslim doctor must refrain from using the patient as a subject for testing the efficacy of a medication, particularly if there is concern regarding significant adverse effects. Such experimentation would undermine the dignity that Allah has granted to the children of Adam. Allah said:

وَلَقَدۡ كَرَّمۡنَا بَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ وَحَمَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ فِى ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ وَرَزَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَفَضَّلۡنَـٰهُمۡ عَلَىٰ ڪَثِيرٍ۬ مِّمَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَا تَفۡضِيلاً۬

And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with At-Taiyibat(lawful good things), and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preference]. [Al-Is’raa 70]

This deed negates the command to safeguard the blood of a Muslim. The Prophet said: “A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfil his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of discomfort, Allah will bring him out of a discomfort from the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection”. [Al-Bukhari 2442]

If the Muslim doctor is confident that the potential harm from the medication is less than the harm resulting from the persistence of the illness, it is permissible to administer the medication, as it involves selecting the lesser of two harms. The doctor should consult with scholars concerning matters pertinent to their profession and to refrain from engaging in issues without a solid understanding of Shariah. Caution should be exercised regarding the irrationalities and misleading perspectives of Freud, as well as the theories of Darwin, to avoid being misled by their assertions. [d] The Prophet said:

“A slave (of Allah) may utter a word which pleases Allah, without giving it much importance, and because of that Allah will raise him to degrees (of reward); a slave (of Allah) may utter a word (carelessly) which displeases Allah, without thinking of its gravity, and because of that he will be thrown into the Hell-fire”. [Al-Bukhari 6478]

The Muslim doctor must exercise caution regarding the information disseminated in medical journals and textbooks, refraining from accepting all content without verifying its accuracy. Knowledge is fundamentally established through either reliable transmission or a well-founded perspective. It is essential to scrutinise the medical practices attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to ensure the authenticity of their chains of transmission. Additionally, medical knowledge derived from opinions, such as those obtained through research and study, should be critically evaluated to determine their validity, potential flaws, or any moral implications. The doctor should not become a willing agent for those who oppose the tenets of Islam and seek to undermine the well-being of Muslims. Instead, he must recognise that all contemporary medical information requires thorough investigation and validation.

A doctor must recognise that their medical knowledge serves merely as a tool for healing. The outcomes and efficacy of that healing are finally in the hands of Allah, who determines whether to grant recovery and wellness. Allah stated that Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, said:

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ

And when I am ill, it is He (Allah) who cures me.

Therefore, Allah is the one who gives cure and not others. The doctor should make this known to the patient. They should be pleased with Allah’s Divine Will and Decree. Abdullah Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, said:

“Once I was riding behind the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, so he said: ‘O young man! I shall teach you some words (of advice). Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, ask Allah (Alone). If you seek help, seek help from Allah (alone). Know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with something, they would not benefit with anything except that which Allah has already recorded for you. If they gather to harm you by something, they would not be able to harm you by anything except what Allah has already recorded against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried’’. [at-Tirmidhee 20516]

So neither should a doctor be beguiled by their medicine nor express objections to the power and position of their Lord (Allah). They should know that the affairs of the creation alternate based on Allah’s decrees.

The Ummah is Sufficed

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Muhammad’s, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, Ummah is not in need of anyone after him; rather the only need they have is someone to convey what he came with (conveyed).

Muhammad’s message is comprehensive, universal and preserved. This universality, comprehensiveness and preservation is not limited to (any time, place or situation), rather it is comprehensive for those to whom he was sent (all the nations of world and the Jinn) and also regarding everything that is needed in the fundamental and subsidiary issues of the religion.

Muhammad’s message is sufficient, all embracing and universal- nothing else is needed besides it. It has not isolated any truth needed by his Ummah in their sciences and deeds.

The Messenger of Allah did not leave this world until he taught his Ummah everything. He even taught them the etiquettes of using the toilet, the etiquettes of sexual relations, sleep and after waking up, eating, drinking and travel. He  taught them the etiquettes of speech and silence, the etiquettes of keeping company with the people and seclusion. He taught them about illness, good health, poverty and wealth – all matters related to life and death.

He described Allah’s throne, the angels, the jinn, the hell fire and the day of judgement in such a manner as if one has seen them with the naked eye. He informed them about their Lord and His Perfect Names and Attributes, and that Allah alone is their true object of worship. He informed them about the Prophets of old and their nations – the events that took place between them and their nations – in such a manner as if one was present at that time. He informed them about all the means to good and the paths of evil- in general and in detail- which no other prophet informed his nation.

He informed them about death and what will take place in the grave – either bliss or punishment. He taught them the evidences and proofs of Tawhid,  Prophet hood and the Afterlife, and he refuted all the sects of disbelief and misguidance.

He taught them war strategies- how to confront the enemy, the way to achieve victory and conquests. If only they knew and understood these matters in the correct manner, they would not be overcome by their enemy.

He informed them about the plots of Iblees and the ways through which he approaches them, and the ways to repel those plots and plans. He informe them about the soul- its characteristics and faults- in such a manner that they are not in need of anyone else to tell them about it. He taught them how to live their daily lives and had they acknowledged and acted upon this, their worldly affairs would be accomplished. He brought them all the means of success in this life and the next, and they do not need anyone besides him. So how can it be said that the path of Muhammad is in need of something else outside of it. The reason for such a claim is due to the weak and little understanding of a person. Allah, The Most High, said:

أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِهِمْ أَنَّا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَرَحْمَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) which is recited to them? Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder (or an admonition) for a people who believe.

Allah, The Most High, said:

وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ

And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims).

Allah, The Most High, said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Qur’an, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.) in your breasts, – a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers.

An Excerpt from I’lam Al-Muwaqqi’een 4/375-377

War-Mongers and War-Profiteers Cannot Conflate Strategic Maneuvering with Treachery

 In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Ka’b Bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, intended to go on an expedition (against a people with whom there is no treaty and war was declared), he always pretended to be going somewhere else, and he would say, ‘War is stratagem'”. [1]

Imam at-Tabari, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “To give a wrong impression – during war – through Mu’aaradah [i.e. making one’s statements or actions obscure (ambiguous) to mislead the opponent about one’s real plans] is allowed”. [2]

Ibn al-Arabi Al-Maliki, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “Stratagem during war takes place through concealment and giving a wrong impression (to the opponent)”. [3]

The scholars unanimously agree that it is permissible to deceive the unbelievers (i.e. when a Muslim country declares war), but this is not permissible if it violates a covenant or an agreement that was made for a guarantee of safety. [4]

However, stratagem does not necessitate treachery. Abu Al-l Fayd, may Allah have mercy upon him, narrated that Sulaym Ibn Amir, may Allah have mercy upon him, reported that there was a peace treaty between Mu’aawiyah, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, and the Byzantines. He was marching towards their country and when the covenant came to an end, he would attack them. A man came on a horse, saying, “Allah is the Most Great! Allah is the Most Great! Let there be fulfillment and not treachery!” Mu’aawiyah sent for him and questioned him about that. He said: “I heard Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say, “When one has a covenant with people he must not strengthen or loosen it until its term comes to an end or he brings it to an end in agreement with them”. He said, “So Mu’aawiyah returned with the people”. [5]

Abdullah Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, reported that Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “When Allah gathers the earlier and later generations on the Day of Resurrection, He will raise a banner for every treacherous person and it will be announced that this is the treachery of this person, the son of this person”. The Greatest Calamity That Has Ever Afflicted The Ummah

The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

“If one of you is afflicted with a calamity, then let him reflect upon his calamity through me (i.e. my death), for indeed it is the greatest of calamities”. [1]

Imam Al-Qurtubi, may Allah have mercy upon him, reported in his Tafseer that Imam Ibn Abdil Barr, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“Indeed, he [the Messenger] spoke the truth because the calamity that results from his death is greater than every calamity that will afflict a Muslim after him until the day of judgement. The revelation stopped and Prophethood ceased (forever)”. [2]

There is nothing more severe upon the Muslims than the death of Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, because he was the most trustworthy and perfect guide for the Ummah. [3]

 

Never Lose Hope

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, stated:

A person is neither to lose hope nor despair. He should not make the people lose hope of a return to goodness. He should not make the people lose hope regarding [the fact] that truth will prevail, and falsehood will be repelled; because Allah [Glorified and Exalted be He] has made that promise and He does not fail to fulfill His promise. Imaam Ibnul Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“The Religion is aided when put to the test, therefore, do not be amazed because this is the way of Ar-Rahmaan (The Most Merciful)”.

The wisdom behind Fitna is so that the believers are purified, exercise patience, become firm upon the truth, and are cautioned for their mistakes, and so that they may repent to Allah, The Mighty and Majestic. It is obligated to the Muslim that he looks at (the affairs) with optimism- neither look at history and the state of affairs with pessimism and hopelessness, nor make the people lose hope. It has been reported in a hadith:

“Whoever says, ‘The people are ruined, then he is ruined'”. [Muslim]

Therefore, a person should not lose hope in Allah’s Mercy and he should not make people lose. The Muslim should neither despair nor lose hope; he has to wait for solace from Allah, but this has to be accompanied by what one can perform of actions, statements, spreading knowledge, calling to Allah, telling the people to have certainty, and keeping them away from despair and lack of hope. An-Nu’man ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: said:

The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever. [5]

Our Palestinian brothers and sisters, we reflect upon your suffering. We have reached another Ramadan while being in a state of physical safety, our properties safe and we have food for the day, while you have endured over two years of unimaginable hardship in our era. The hunger and tiredness that accompanies our fasting in the UK is absolutely nothing compared to the hunger and tiredness you endure. May Allah never allow our hearts to forget you, even though Allah alone suffices you.

O Allah! We ask You by Your Greatest Name to grant abundant reward to our Palestinian brothers and sisters, increase them in patience and endurance, and facilitate for them every means of strength to overcome this trial that has persisted for over 70 years.

O Allah! Increase the strength of our Muslim rulers and facilitate for them every path that will increase their influence on the global stage, so that the Ummah is also increased in safety. Unite the hearts of our rulers and the hearts of their subjects upon everything beloved to You. Ameen.

The Simple Determinant of a Civilised and Good Life

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Salih Aala Ash-Shaikh, may Allah preserve him, said:

Allah created the heavens and the earth in order that two obligations are fulfilled: His rights and the rights of His servants. Every Messenger and the divine scriptures were revealed to explain these two obligations: to worship Allah alone, reject all false gods and rivals, and follow His Messenger in that particular era and place. Allah revealed His scriptures and sent His Messengers to establish these two obligations. Allah, The Exalted, said:

لَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلَنَا بِٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَأَنزَلۡنَا مَعَهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمِيزَانَ لِيَقُومَ ٱلنَّاسُ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ

Indeed We have sent Our Messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance (justice) that mankind may keep up justice. [Al-Hadid. 25]

Allah said:

وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِى ڪُلِّ أُمَّةٍ۬ رَّسُولاً أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah).” [Al-Nahl. 36]

Due to this, the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “O Mu’adh! Do you know what is the right of Allah upon His servants?” I (Mu’adh) said, “Allah and his messenger know best”. The Prophet said, “To worship Him alone and associate none in worship with Him. And do you know what is their right upon Him?” I said, “Allah and his messenger know best”. Imam Ash-Shatibi, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated:

Know that Allah has established this Shariah as proof against the creation (humankind and jinn) – the old and young alike, the obedient and the disobedient, the righteous and the wicked. He did not specify the proof against anyone in exclusion of another one. Also, all the other revealed laws were established as proof against all the nations to whom they were revealed. The Shariah is the judge- in general, and specifically- the judge on all those who have reached the age of responsibility. It is the path attached to (what Allah has ordained) and it is the Greatest Guide. Have you not heard the statement of Allah, The Most High:

وَكَذَٲلِكَ أَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَ رُوحً۬ا مِّنۡ أَمۡرِنَاۚ مَا كُنتَ تَدۡرِى مَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ وَلَا ٱلۡإِيمَـٰنُ وَلَـٰكِن جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ نُورً۬ا نَّہۡدِى بِهِۦ مَن نَّشَآءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَاۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَہۡدِىٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٲطٍ۬ مُّسۡتَقِيمٍ۬

And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad) Ruhan (an Inspiration, and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Qur’an) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path (i.e. Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism). [Ash-Shura 52]

He (the Prophet) – peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- was the first to be guided to the Book and Iman, and then those who followed him. The Book is the Guide and also the Sunnah that was revealed to him explains that guidance (i.e. the Sunnah and the Qur’an explain each other). All the creation (mankind and Jinn) are guided through it. Therefore, when this is the case that the Shariah is worthy of being a decisive proof against them and a beacon by way of which they are guided to the truth, their nobility is determined by the extent to which they embrace its rulings- through acting upon them in speech, belief, and deeds– and not merely due to the level of their intellects or their nobility amongst their people. That is because Allah, The Most High, has determined nobility through Taqwa and no other than it. Allah, The Most High, says: [إِنَّ أَڪۡرَمَكُمۡ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتۡقَٮٰكُمۡۚ- Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa] [49:13] [1]

This is simple and clear distinction in behaviour that can be seen as either civilised or uncivilised. Actions that align with divine revelation reflect moral integrity, while those that contradict it are considered evil, corrupt, or misleading. It is important to be cautious of those who promote misguided ideas in Muslim societies —individuals who aim to undermine the sound social values that are in harmony with the Messenger’s guidance, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, rebuked those misguided individuals in Muslim countries who attempted to evaluate civilised behaviour through the lens of foreign practices. He stated:

“In the view of these deviants, revival and advancement means to assimilate into the morale and mentality of the outsiders – the enemies of all religions; lose all their personalities by adopting the personalities of those people, imitate them in their manners, dress, dealings and customs – precisely and distinctly, because they see that one should dissociate from the religion ordained by Allāh and from beautiful manners. This is progress and advancement in their view, thus they replace that which is lofty, perfect and precious with something that is low and despicable. They are in agreement with their enemies outwardly and inwardly, and through this path they became the greatest weapon of the enemies against their religion and people, and for this reason they blindly imitated the foreigners in harmful matters.

As for that which they possess of those things that are of benefit – even if associated with the religion, they are the most distant from it as is well known regarding their state of affairs. And through that which the deviants decorate their falsehood is their strong language (or forceful speech) regarding modern culture (or intellectual development), whilst claiming that neither can manners be refined nor free from oppression and tyranny except by way of that. They exaggerated in praising it and its educators, vilify those who do not have this modern culture and ridicule them. They interpret it with various deviated interpretations and everyone blurting, because if sciences are disorderly and manners are based on them, then this is how its people will behave. They do not agree – in anything – in their views and opinions, and all their statements refer back to toppling the religion and manners. Indeed, sound intellectual development and beneficial refinement is that which the religion of Islam brought, which cleansed the beliefs from polytheism and the worship of images; cleansed the manners from every evil trait, cleansed deeds and etiquettes until matters became rectified, the state of affairs came to be upright, combined between the religious and worldly affairs, reformed the beneficial morale and the material sciences that support them. And certainly what is witnessed is a testimony to that which we have mentioned, for indeed the contemporary (or modern) sciences and inventions – despite their expansion and vastness – have been unable to rectify the manners, bring about sound virtues and remove evil due to them being devoid of (sound) religion; rather the religion of Islaam is that which will guarantee this rectification, undertake this beneficial refinement, direct towards every good and deter every evil, for indeed it is the rectifier of the apparent matters (i.e. deeds) and the hidden affairs of the soul in the religious and worldly affairs. Whoever looks at its fundamentals, subsidiary issues and what it deters, he will find the affair as we have mentioned; rather -above everything else -Allāh is the granter of success. [2]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Whoever ponders upon the state of affairs of the world will find that every affair of rectification is due to Tawheed, singling out Allah in worship and obedience to His Messenger (Muhammad). And every evil in the world, trial, affliction, scarcity (in livelihood), being overpowered by an enemy and other than that is due to (our) opposition to the Messenger and the call to other than (the way of) Allah and His Messenger. Whoever truly ponders upon this and examines the state of affairs of the world- since its beginning and until the time Allah will take it away and those upon it- he will realise this affair regarding himself and others, in general and specific (circumstances). And there is no Might or Power except with Allah –The Most High, The Most Great. [3]

Imam Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated regarding Allāh’s statement:

 وَمِنۡهُم مَّن يَقُولُ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِى ٱلدُّنۡيَا حَسَنَةً۬ وَفِى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً۬

And of them there are some who say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good (2:201]

Good in the worldly life is Knowledge and worship. Good in the afterlife is Paradise. [4]
