A bit more detail needed on this post – “What Yusuf (alayhis-salaam) possessed of knowledge and Imaan”

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

”He (Yusuf) knew that he is not able to avert it on his own, and that if his Lord did not protect him and avert their (i.e. the women) plot, he would have inclined towards them by way of (human) nature and thus become of the ignorant ones.  This is from Yusuf’s perfect knowledge about his Lord and himself (as a human being). [Updated: Sharh Al-Asbaab Wal-Amaal Alatee Yudaa-afu Bihaa Ath-Thawaab of Imaam as-Saa’di page: 58:see link: http://www.salafitalk.net/st/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=29&Topic=9966: Post Number 6]

Additional Detail for more clarity

Concerning the Aayaat 23 and 24 Soorah Yusuf:

‘’And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him (to do an evil act), she closed the doors and said: “Come on, O you.” He said: “I seek refuge in Allah (or Allah forbid)! Truly, he (your husband) is my master! He made my stay agreeable! (So I will never betray him). Verily, the Zalimun (wrong and evil-doers) will never be successful.” [Ayah: 23]

‘’And indeed she did desire him and he would have inclined to her desire, had he not seen the evidence of his Lord. Thus it was, that We might turn away from him evil and illegal sexual intercourse. Surely, he was one of Our chosen, guided slaves.’’[Ayah:24]

Imaam as-Saa’di (rahimahullaah) said about the part of the verse: ‘’Had he not seen the evidence of his Lord;’’ That is what he possessed of knowledge and Eemaan which necessitates abandonment of everything that Allaah has forbidden—and which necessitated that he would distance himself and abstain from this major sin, and he (Yusuf) said: “I seek refuge in Allah (or Allah forbid)! That is: I seek refuge with Allaah that I should (ever) commit this ugly deed, because it is from that which angers Allaah….

Concerning the Ayah:

‘’Unless You turn away their plot from me, I will feel inclined towards them and be one (of those who commit sin and deserve blame or those who do deeds) of the ignorants.’’ [Noble Qur’aan- Shaikh Taqiyudeen Al-Hilaali and Dr Muhsin khan. Soorah Yoosuf Ayah: 33]

Imaam Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) said:

‘’If You abandon me and I am reliant on myself, then I have no power over myself, nor can I bring harm or benefit to myself, except with Your power and will. Verily, You are sought for each and everything, and our total reliance is on You Alone for each and everything. Please, do not abandon me and leave me to rely on myself.’’ [Tafseer Ibn katheer]

Conclusion:

So, Yusuf (alayhis-salaam) relied upon Allaah and acknowledged the absolute Power and Might of his Lord in repelling harm and bringing benefit, and that he cannot repel harm or bring benefit except by the Might and Power of his Lord.  And his knowledge and awareness of Allaah, and Imaan in Allaah necessitated that he greatly abhorred the evil deed he was been called to, and he was definitely going to turn away from it by the will of Allaah (The Most High).  Thus Imaam as-Saa’di said: ‘’That is what he (Yusuf) possessed of knowledge and Eemaan which necessitates abandonment of everything that Allaah has forbidden—and which necessitated that he would distance himself and abstain from this major sin…’’

Ruling on Reading the Qur’an in the Mind, not Physically with Lips – Sh.ibn Baz

The following question was posed to Shaikh Bin Baz: “Some people get a mus’haf and look into it [reading in the mind] without moving their lips; is it still applicable to term this scenario as “reading the Qur’an”? Or is it a must to pronounce/utter the words and for that to be heard in order to deserve the reward for reading the Qur’an? And is a person rewarded for just looking into a mus’haf [reading in mind]?

There is nothing preventing looking into the Qur’an without reading [physically] to ponder and contemplate and understand the meanings, but the one who does this is not considered “a reader” [to have actually ‘read’ the Qur’an] and he does not receive the virtue of actually reading unless he pronounces the words and physically reads the Qur’an, even if those around him cannot hear [i.e. it is not required to be loud, but physical pronunciation required though], due to the statement of the prophet “Read the Qur’an for indeed it will come as an Intercessor for its companions on the Day of Judgement” [Muslim]. The prophet  صلى الله عليه و سلم intended by the ‘companions of it’ i.e. those who act upon it, just as it is mentioned in other ahaadith.

Similarly the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “Whoever reads a letter of the Qur’an so for him is a reward, and every reward is 10-fold of its example” [at-Tirmidhy & ad-Daarimy with an authentic chain]. And a person is not considered a “reader” unless he utters [and pronounces that reading], just as the people of knowledge have stated that.

Those Who Perform Righteous Deeds, Whilst Being Fearful….

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa] said: I ask the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) about this Ayah:

[وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ  – And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear] [23:60]; are they those who drink alcohol and commit theft?” He [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said: ”O daughter of Siddeeq! Rather they are those who observe fasting, perform prayer and give charity, whilst fearing that their deeds will not be accepted from them.” [Reported by Imaam Tirmidee Number: 3175]

Hasan Al-Basri [rahimahullaah] said: ”The believer combines between perfection (in worship) and fear (that his deeds will be rejected); and the hypocrite combines between evil (deeds) and feeling safe from [Allaah’s punishment]” [Madaarij As-Saalikeen: 1/512]

Reflecting On The Qur’aan–Ibn Qudaamah (rahimahullaah)

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

When a Bedouin heard the saying of Allaah [فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَاء وَالأرْضِ إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَا أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ] ”Then, by the Lord of the heaven and the earth, it is the truth (i.e. what has been promised to you), just as it is the truth that you can speak”[Dhaariyaat Ayah: 23]; so he (i.e. the bedouin) said: ”Who angered the Mighty and Majesty so that He made an oath?!” [At-Tawwaabeen: 279]

A Slave will not truly actualize….. Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah)

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: A slave (of Allaah) will not (truly actualize the statement) ”you alone we worship (O Allaah)”, except by way of two fundamental principles: The first of them is to follow the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and the second is sincerity to the (only true object) of worship (i.e. Allaah) [source-page: 68تهذيب المدارج ]

Breaking off Recitation of the Qur’an to Talk to Someone? Shaikh bin Baz

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaikh bin Baz was asked, “Is it permissible to talk to someone whilst in the middle of reciting the Qur’an?”

The shaikh answered, “We are not aware of any harm in that, however the fact that he continues in recitation and ponders and concentrates and his heart is focussed is superior rather than breaking off to speak to others, this is better unless there was a need to speak in which case he can do so and then return to his recitation, such as returning the salam upon the one who initiated it upon him, or repeating after the mu’adhin upon hearing the adhan, he remains silent during the adhan and repeats, or replying to the one who sneezes; such sunnah acts are befitting to be implemented by the believer and not to become slack in them. Similarly if he required to ask his family to do something or someone approached and made a request of him such that he must break off and respond etc, affairs of this nature there is no harm.

As for speech with no benefit in it then it is better to leave it in order to focus and concentrate on the recitation of the Qur’an, as Allah stated in surat Sad:29, the meaning of which is,(This is) a Book (the Quran) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember”, and it is known that speech with no benefit in it preoccupies the heart and weakens the ability to ponder and focus”.

Is it Permissible to Hold the Mus’haf with the Left Hand? Shaikh bin Baz

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaikh bin Baz رحمه الله was asked the following question: “Is it permissible to hold the mus’haf with the left hand?”

He replied, “I am not aware of anything regards to this, even though of course holding it with the right hand is better, the right is better generally, the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم would use his right hand for arranging his hair, giving and taking, shaking hands etc; as for the left then it is for other than that [i.e. cleaning oneself after answering the call of nature etc].

If though there was a need to hold the mus’haf with the left hand [whilst reciting or otherwise] due to the right hand becoming tired, or due to a need whereby the right hand was required to pick something up or do something, or something similar to such needs, then there is no harm in holding the mus’haf in the left inshaa’ Allah. So whether he placed it in the left or right and read would be ok, however no doubt the right is better and superior as the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم would use the right for the good affairs”.

Pictures Depicting the Day of Judgement – Shaikh al-Fawzan

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Q: “Is it permissible to draw pictures of some of the sights of the Day of Judgement?”

A: “No, no, this is something the youth do as a “means of calling to Allah” as they say, they illustrate the Fire, Paradise and its rivers; this is not permissible, this is from the knowledge of the unseen that no one knows other than Allah the Most High, so this type of futility is not permissible.

And calling to Allah is not done in this way, the call to Allah is via the Qur’an and the Sunnah, encouraging and warning and clarifying. [Sometimes they] dig a grave and say this is to give dawa and to remind [the people]…remind the people with the Qur’an my brother [!] Allah stated “But warn by the Qur’an, him who fears my threat” [Qaf:45]… so the one who is not reminded by the Qur’an will not be reminded by a hole dug up, this is burdening [beyond bounds] that Allah has not revealed evidence for”.

This affair is somewhat widespread amongst some, and in fact, I recall our brothers from the Maldives mentioning the existence of such acts there, and so alhamdulillah the Shaikh has clarified the affair.
