One of the Oddest Statements About So-called Modern Salafi Islam

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

They say, “Al-Walaa Wal Baraa (Love and Hate For The Sake of Allah) Is a Concept of Modern Salafi Islam

The Prophets and Messengers Did Not Give Loyalty to Anything That Opposed The Revelation

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said to his father and his people: “Verily, I am innocent of what you worship, except Him (i.e. I worship none but Allah Alone) Who did create me, and verily, He will guide me.” And he made it [i.e. La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone)] a Word lasting among his offspring (True Monotheism), that they may turn back (i.e. to repent to Allah or receive admonition). [Surah Az-Zukhruf 26-28]

Allah [The Exalted] stated about Prophet Hud, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:

They said: “O Hud! No evidence have you brought us, and we shall not leave our gods for your (mere) saying! And we are not believers in you. “All that we say is that some of our gods (false deities) have seized you with evil (madness).” He said: “I call Allah to witness and bear you witness that I am free from that which you ascribe as partners in worship, with Him (Allah). So plot against me, all of you, and give me no respite. “I put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth). “So if you turn away, still I have conveyed the Message with which I was sent to you. My Lord will make another people succeed you, and you will not harm Him in the least. Surely, my Lord is Guardian over all things.” [Hud. 53-57]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Say (O Muhammad ): “What thing is the most great in witness?” Say: “Allah (the Most Great!) is Witness between me and you; this Qur’an has been revealed to me that I may therewith warn you and whomsoever it may reach. Can you verily bear witness that besides Allah there are other aliha (gods)?” Say “I bear no (such) witness!” Say: “But in truth He (Allah) is the only one Ilah (God). And truly I am innocent of what you join in worship with Him.” [Al-An’am. 19]

Abu Umamah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: ”Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, gives for the sake of Allah, and withholds for the sake of Allah has perfected the faith”. [Saheeh Sunan Abee Dawud 4681]

However, this pure love for goodness and aversion to anything that contradicts the revelation did not result in injustice; instead, they exemplified the highest standards of fairness. A Muslim can assist a non-Muslim without any intention of supporting the non-Muslim’s religion or creed. “Prophet Musa, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, helped the disbeliever who was from his nation against a person from the people of Firawn. Allah [The Exalted] said:

And he entered the city at a time of unawareness of its people, and he found there two men fighting, – one of his party (his religion – from the Children of Israel), and the other of his foes. The man of his (own) party asked him for help against his foe, so Musa (Moses) struck him with his fist and killed him. He said: “This is of Shaitan‘s (Satan) doing, verily, he is a plain misleading enemy.” [Al-Qasas. 15] [Al-Walaa Wal Baraa. pages 1-14. Publisher Daar Al-Istiqaamah. 1st Edition 1427AH (2006)]

Whimsical statements about the end of the world and its signs

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah [The Most High] said:

(Some) say they were three, the dog being the fourth among them; (others) say they were five, the dog being the sixth, guessing at the unseen; (yet others) say they were seven, the dog being the eighth. Say (O Muhammad): “My Lord knows best their number; none knows them but a few.” So debate not (about their number, etc.) except with the clear proof (which We have revealed to you). And consult not any of them (people of the Scripture) about (the affair of) the people of the Cave. [Al-Kahf. 22]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Allah informed of the disagreement between the people of the Scripture regarding the number of people in the cave- a disagreement that (occurred) as a result of guessing at the unseen, falsifying statements, and speaking about something they don’t know. Allah said: [ فَلَا تُمَارِ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا مِرَاءً ظَاهِرً -So debate not (about their number, etc.) except with the clear proof (which We have revealed to you)] – Meaning based on knowledge, certainty, and on that which is beneficial. [1]

An ideologue affiliated with the American left says: “With the war in Ukraine and increasingly strident threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin, the spectre of nuclear warfare is stalking the globe for the first time in decades. We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. Experts warned of the most dangerous situation they can remember, with fears not limited to Russia: North Korean nuclear sabre-rattling has reached new heights, with the world bracing for a first nuclear test since 2017”. These crazy people also speculate based on their fabricated notion about “The Doomsday Clock – 90 seconds to midnight!” This so-called Clock was concocted in 1947 as a whimsical foreshadowing of the end of the world, and it is evaluated every January by the foolish.

An American Evangelist added to the speculated saying:

Likewise, the person who wrote this article claims that Newton held similar beliefs:

Response

Allah said:

Verily, Allah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things). [Luqman. Ayah 34]

What is Armageddon? They say that “it is a terrible battle that some believe would result in the utter annihilation of the world or the human race”.

Indeed, the claim that the world will end in a nuclear war is simply the belief of superstitious people, fearmongers, or those who seek to exploit fear for their own geopolitical aims, as well as pastors misinterpreting outdated scriptures and scientists lacking upright guidance. Nothing besides the authentic divine texts of the final revelation should be quoted when speaking about the end of the world. Allah’s Messenger and what has been revealed to him are the authorities one must study in order to understand the subject of trials and tribulations before the end of time. As a result, one cannot return to the following matters: the narrations of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), opinions and dreams, weak and false narrations, analogy, and political, economic, or socialist analysis. That is because the narrations about the trials and tribulations, the signs of the Hour, and the strife that will occur are from the (affairs) of the Religion, and the Religion is Tawqeefee (i.e. its source can only be established from the divine texts of the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah). So, whatever is reported from the Prophet with authentic chains of transmission about (upcoming events) is necessary for a Muslim to believe, whether it appeals to the intellect or not, and this is the reality of one’s testimony that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger.

Allah (The Most High) said:
وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ

Nor does he (Muhammad) speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. [An-Najm. 3]

Allah (The Most High) said:

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُو

And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it)].[Al-Hashr. 7]

Umar [may Allah be pleased with him] reported: One day while we were sitting with Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journeying were to be seen on him and none of us knew him. He walked up and sat down by the prophet. Resting his knees against his and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs, he said: “O Muhammad, tell me about Islam”. The messenger of Allah said: “Islam is to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers, to pay the zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.” He said: “You have spoken rightly’’ And we were amazed at him asking him and saying that he had spoken rightly. He said: “Then tell me about Iman.”He said: ”It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny, both the good and the evil thereof.” He said: “You have spoken rightly”. He said: “Then tell me about Ihsan.” He said: “It is to worship Allah as though you are seeing Him, and while you see Him not yet truly He sees you”. He said: “Then tell me about the Hour”. He said: “The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner.” He said: “Then tell me about its signs.” He said: “That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and that you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute herdsman competing in constructing lofty buildings.” Then he took himself off and I stayed for a time. Then he said: “O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?” I said: “Allah and His messenger know best”. He said: “He was Gibreel (Gabriel), who came to you to teach you your religion”. [Reported by Muslim. Kitaab al-Eemaan. Chapter: Imaan, Islaam and Ihsaan. Hadeeth Number: 8]

The testimony in this hadeeth is the statement of the Prophet, “He was Gibreel, who came to you to teach you your religion”. Therefore, the principle in the preceding hadeeth is that the Prophet asked a question concerning the Hour and its circumstances, and he established that it is something contained in religion. The trials and tribulations, circumstances, and strife associated with the (portents) of the Hour are from the religion, and it is not for anybody to speak about it based on their own (opinions, views, analysis, interpretations, etc.). [2]

Abu Hurairah [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The Hour will not be established till two big groups fight each other whereupon there will be a great number of casualties on both sides and they will be following one and the same path, till about thirty Dajjals (liars) appear and each one of them will claim that he is Allah’s Messenger, till religious knowledge is taken away (by the death of Religious scholars), earthquakes will increase in number; time will pass quickly, afflictions will appear, Al-Harj, (i.e., killing) will increase, till wealth will be in abundance – so abundant that a wealthy person will worry lest nobody should accept his Zakat, and whenever he will present it to someone, that person (to whom it will be offered) will say, ‘I am not in need of it, till the people compete with one another in constructing high buildings, till a man when passing by a grave of someone will say, ‘Would that I were in his place’ and till the sun rises from the West. So when the sun will rise and the people will see it (rising from the West) they will all believe (accept Islam) but that will be the time when: (as Allah said) [لاَ يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ آمَنَتْ مِنْ قَبْلُ، أَوْ كَسَبَتْ فِي إِيمَانِهَا خَيْرًا – no good will it do to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good (by performing deeds of righteousness) through his Faith]. And the Hour will be established while two men spreading a garment in front of them but they will not be able to sell it, nor fold it up, and Hour will be established when a man has milked his she-camel and has taken away the milk but he will not be able to drink it, and Hour will be established before a man repairing a tank (for his livestock) is able to water (his animals) in it, and Hour will be established when a person has raised a morsel (of food) to his mouth but will not be able to eat it.” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Hadeeth Number 7121]

Abu Zaid -Amr Bin Akhtab [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported: Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] led us in the dawn prayer and then mounted the pulpit and addressed us until it was (time for the) noon prayer. He then came down the pulpit and observed prayer and then again mounted the pulpit and again addressed us until it was time for the ‘Asr prayer. He then again came down and observed the prayer and again mounted the pulpit and addressed us until the sun was set and he informed (us about) everything (pertaining to turmoil) that lay hidden in the past and what lies in (the womb) of) the future and the most learned amongst us is one who remembers them well. [ Saheeh Muslim 2892]

Imaam Muslim said: Chapter: The Conquest Of Constantinople, The Emergence Of The Dajjal And The Descent Of ‘Isa Bin Maryam [peace be upon him]: Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] reported that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said: The Last Hour would not come until the Romans would land at al-A’maq or in Dabiq. An army consisting of the best (soldiers) of the people of the earth at that time will come from Medina (to counteract them). When they will arrange themselves in ranks, the Romans would say: Do not stand between us and those (Muslims) who took prisoners from amongst us. Let us fight with them; and the Muslims would say: Nay, by Allah, we would never get aside from you and from our brethren that you may fight them. They will then fight and a third (part) of the army would run away, whom Allah will never forgive. A third (part of the army) which would be constituted of excellent martyrs in Allah’s eye, would be killed and the third who would never be put to trial would win and they would be conquerors of Constantinople. And as they would be busy distributing the spoils of war (amongst themselves) after hanging their swords by the olive trees, Satan would cry: The Dajjal has taken your place among your family. They would then come out, but it would be of no avail. And when they would come to Syria, he would come out while they would be still preparing themselves for battle drawing up the ranks. Certainly, the time of prayer shall come, and then Jesus (peace be upon him) son of Mary would descend and would lead them. When the enemy of Allah would see him, it would (disappear) just as the salt dissolves itself in water, and if he (Jesus) were not to confront them at all, even then it would dissolve completely, but Allah would kill them by his hand and he would show them their blood on his lance (the lance of Jesus Christ). [Saheeh Muslim. 2897]

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “By Allah in Whose Hands my soul is, son of Mary (Jesus) will shortly descend amongst you people (Muslims) as a just ruler and will break the Cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya (a tax taken from the non-Muslims, who are in the protection, of the Muslim government). Then there will be an abundance of money and nobody will accept charitable gifts”. [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari 2222]

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “What would you do when the son of Mary would descend amongst you and would lead you as one amongst you? Ibn Abi Dhi’b on the authority of Abu Huraira narrated: Your leader amongst you. Ibn Abi Dhi’b said: Do you know what the words:” He would lead as one amongst you” mean? I said: Explain these to me. He said: He would lead you according to the Book of your: Lord (hallowed be He and most exalted) and the Sunnah of your Messenger”. [Saheeh Muslim 155]

Hudhaifah [may Allah be pleased with him] reported that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] stood before us one day and he did not leave anything unsaid (that he had to say) at that very spot which would happen (in the shape of turmoil) up to the Last Hour. Those who had to remember them preserved them in their minds and those who could not remember them forgot them. My friends knew them and there are certain things that slip out of my mind, but I recapitulate them when anyone makes a mention of them just as a person is lost from one’s mind but is recalled to him upon seeing his face. [Saheeh Muslim 2891]

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] reported that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said: The Last Hour would not come before the Euphrates uncovers a mountain of gold, for which people would fight. Ninety-nine out of each one hundred would die but every man amongst them would say that perhaps he would be the one who would be saved (and thus possess this gold). [Saheeh Muslim 2894]

The Beast:

Allah says:

And when the Word (of torment) is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth a beast to them, which will speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in Our Ayat (Verses of the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad).

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allah have mercy upon him] commented: Meaning, when the time comes for the warning, which Allah has decided; [أَخۡرَجۡنَا لَهُمۡ دَآبَّةً۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ – We shall bring out from the earth a beast to them] or one of the earth’s beasts, rather than the heavens. This beast [تُكَلِّمُهُمۡ – will speak to them]; Meaning, it would speak to the people about how they did not believe with certainty in Our (i.e. Allah’s) signs due to a lack of knowledge and certainty in Allah’s signs. So Allah will make this beast appear as one of His amazing signs to manifest to the people what they doubted. This beast is the well-known beast that will appear at the end of time, and it will be one of the (major) signs indicating the approach of the Day of Judgement, as mentioned in many Prophetic narrations. [3]

Abu Umaamah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The beast will emerge and strike the people on their noses, then their numbers will increase among you until a man will buy a camel and they will say, ‘Who did you buy it from?’ and he will say, ‘I bought it from one of those with a mark on their noses’”. [Reported by Imaam Ahmad 22362 and declared authentic by Imaam Al Albaanee in As-Sisilah As-Saheehah. Number 322]

Anas [may Allah be pleased with him] reported that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “The Hour will not occur until ‘Allah, Allah’ is not said on earth.” [Saheeh Muslim 148]

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] said that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “When three things appear, faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from his faith: the rising of the sun in its place of setting, the Dajjal, and the beast of the earth”. [Saheeh Muslim. Number 158]

Shaikh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allah have mercy upon him] as follows:

In the Qur’aan and authentic Ahaadeeth there are numerous reports regarding that which will take place in the Dunyah and Aakhirah, and affairs that occurred perfectly after the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] spoke about them many years prior to their occurrence, such as his statement: ‘The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Turks; people with small eyes, red faces, and flat noses. Their faces will look like shields coated with leather. The Hour will not be established till you fight with people whose shoes are made of hair. [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Number 2928]

Those amongst the Muslims – who saw and fought those Turks when their king Genghis Khan appeared, his children and grandchildren, such as Hulagu Khan and other than him amongst the disbelieving kings- could not describe them better than how the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] described them [i.e. even though he did not meet them]. He stated this 600 years prior to its occurrence. (4)

These authentic narrations transmitted from the final infallible Messenger are enough for anyone who is protected from superstition and conjecture. The events before the last day on Earth as transmitted in the authentic divine texts of the final religion are not based on Hypotheses, rather, anyone who believes this to be the case is a misguided fool.

Allah [The Exalted] said:

And of them there are some who listen to you; but We have set veils on their hearts, so they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; if they see every one of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) they will not believe therein; to the point that when they come to you to argue with you, the disbelievers say: “These are nothing but tales of the men of old.” [Al-An’aam. 25]

As for the psychics, they are nothing more the companions of the devils. Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali, may Allah preserve him, stated:

Among the liars – whose affair has been unveiled by Islam in the Qur’an and the Sunnah – are the soothsayers, fortune tellers and magicians. They are from the most evil liars. Allah said:

Shall I inform you (O people!) upon whom the Shayatin (devils) descend? They descend on every lying (one who tells lies), sinful person. Who gives ear (to the devils and they pour what they may have heard of the unseen from the angels), and most of them are liars. As for the poets, the erring follow them; see you not that they speak about every subject (praising others right or wrong) in their poetry? And that they say what they do not do. Except those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much, and reply back (in poetry) to the unjust poetry (which the pagan poets utter against the Muslims). And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned. [Ash-Shu’araa. 221-227]

Allah made it known that the devils descend on these types of liars, even the poets amongst them; except those who believe, perform righteous deeds and reply back (in poetry) to the unjust poetry (which the pagan poets utter against the Muslims).

The Messenger said, “Whoever goes to a fortune teller or soothsayer and believes in what he says has disbelieved in what has been revealed to Muhammad”. [Sahih al-Jami. Number 5015]

It has been reported in an authentic narrations that the devils eavesdrop in the [first] heavens and then inform the magician or the soothsayer, then they add a hundred lies to it; so the ignorant wrong doer believes them whilst being aware of the recompense for the one who believes them. If this is the ruling against the one who believes them, then how about the one who is immersed in the sludge of soothsaying, magic and fortune telling? Therefore, the Muslims should also be cautious of these evil category of people and from their most distinct characteristics is lying. Allah and Messenger testified that indeed they are liars and made known their attachment to the devils. [5]

The Khawaariq – [Phenomena Attributed to Something Outside The Norm]

Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allah have mercy upon him] said:

The Khawaariq by way of which the devils misguide the children of Adam – such as when the devils take the image of a person who is absent or has passed away and what is similar to this – has misguided many of those who ascribe themselves to the Muslims or to the people of the Scripture. They establish this on two affairs: Firstly, that whoever from whom these khawaariq occurs is a Wali, and according to the term of the Christians he is a Qadees A’dheem – a great saint! Secondly, that the one from whom these khawaariq occurs is therefore infallible, everything he narrates is truth and everything he commands is justice”. However, it can definitely be the case that neither did a phenomena outside the norm – whether unrelated or related to sound knowledge and piety – occur from such a person nor a phenomena outside the normal related to deeds of the devils; rather the person merely carried out the tricks of the liars and wicked sinners. The tricks of the liars and wicked sinners are numerous indeed, so one thinks that they are amazing events outside the norm, however neither is that the case nor is it something similar to the tricks of the monks. Some people have written books regarding the tricks of the monks, such as the trick reported about one of them changing water into oil- that when the oil is in the interior of the lighthouse, the water gradually reduces and thus the oil floats [or pops up] on the water, so those who are present think that the water has changed into oil. The likes of this affair are numerous from the tricks of those Christians, because all that those Christians possess – those who altered the religion of the Messiah [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] – of activities that are attributed to something out of the norm are either from the devils or they are tricks, and there’s nothing in them related to the miracles of the righteous people.

Likewise, the deviated people – those who seek to alter the religion of Muhammad – adopt a religion that is not legislated by Allah and His Messenger, then they make it a path of worship and give it precedence over the path that is legislated by Allah and His Messenger. For example, they give precedence to listening to sounds from the tambourines and the shrill flutes over listening to the book of Allah, so one of them goes into a state of ecstasy and a satanic trance through which he becomes muddled up with shaytaan until he speaks in a language he does not know. Then when he returns to his senses – just as when a jinn speaks through the tongue of the one who is possessed and after informing the people of that which is in his heart and soul, which is from the Shaytaan, and the shaytaan leaves him -, he cannot repeat what he said at first.

The heretics alter the religion of the Messengers – either the religion of the Messiah or seek to alter the religion of Muhammad, and amongst the likes of such people are the proponents of hearsay, misguidance, the disbelievers, the polytheists, apostates and other than them, such as the likes of Musaylimah the liar, Al-Aswad Al-Unzee, Al-Haarith Ad-Dimashqee, Baabaa Roomee and other than them amongst those who engaged in activities that are considered to be outside the norm [i.e. so called miracles] but [in reality] are related to the deeds of the devils.

As for the tricksters, they are numerous and they are not Awliyaa of Allah. Their so called amazing activities that are outside the norm- if not related to the satanic deeds of the soothsayers and the magicians – a just tricks. They deliberately lie and deceive unlike those connected to the devils, because amongst them is he who deceives, so one thinks that what he does is from the miracles of the righteous people, just as amongst them is one who knows that what he does is from the devils, but he does so in order to achieve his goals.

The intent behind this discussion is that many of the activities that are considered to be outside of the norm [i.e. so called miracles] are either satanic deeds or tricks, so one thinks that they are the true miracles of the righteous people, for indeed that which whose cause is based on Shirk and wicked deeds can only be from the devils, such as when a person associates partners with Allaah by invoking the stars, or invokes a person- whether such a person is dead or absent, or he makes an oath through unknown words and statements whose meanings are not known, or he knows that they are names of devils, or seeks aid through lewd conduct and oppression, then such deeds – considered to be outside of the norm that emanates from this – are from the devils.

The righteous people have miracles such as the miracles of the pious people of this Ummah [may Allaah have mercy upon them], the miracles of the disciples of the Messiah [may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messiah, and may Allaah have mercy upon the disciples] and other than them amongst those who were upon the correct and unaltered religion of the Messiah. However, the occurrence of miracles at the hands of the righteous people does not necessitate that they are infallible like the Prophets [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them]; rather it maybe that a righteous man- a Wali – has miracles, but despite this he mixes up by error and makes a mistake in that which he thinks or what he is made to hear or see, or what he sees, or what he understands from the revealed Scrippure. And because of this, the statements of those other than the Prophets [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them] can either be accepted or rejected [i.e. based on evidence], but as for the Prophets [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them], it is obligated on a person to affirm truthfully everything they have related regarding the affairs of the unseen and obey them in everything they command. And due to this, Allaah [The Exalted] obligated on a person to believe in everything the Prophets [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them] brought and did not obligate on a person to believe in everything that comes from others. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

Say (O Muslims), “We believe in Allah and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma’il (Ishmael), Ishaque (Isaac), Ya’qub (Jacob), and to Al-Asbat [the twelve sons of Ya’qub (Jacob)], and that which has been given to Musa (Moses) and ‘Iesa (Jesus), and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted (in Islam).” [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 136]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allah, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets. [Al-Baqarah. 177]

And because of this the Muslims are all in agreement that the one who disbelieved in a single Prophet whose Prophethood is well known, then he is a disbeliever- an apostate. There is no distinction between one Prophet from the other- by believing in some and disbelieving in others. Allah said:

Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers and wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers (by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, “We believe in some but reject others,” and wish to adopt a way in between. They are in truth disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayaat 150-151] [6]

Reflections from some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [22 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

All praise and thanks be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon Allah’s Messenger, his family, his companions and those who follow his guidance. To proceed:

Indeed, lying is repugnant and heinous – considered extremely repugnant and loathsome by the Islamic legislation, sound intellect and sound natural disposition; abhorred in all nations, all religions and creeds. Indeed, Allah made it forbidden in all messages of the Messengers, dispraised lying and liars in many verses and promised them the severest punishment. Allah, The Blessed and Exalted, said:

Say (O Muhammad):“(But) the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are Al-Fawahish (great evil sins, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.) whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allah for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge]. [Al-A’raf. 33]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, held that the most loathsome and greatest of these unlawful deeds is to speak about Allah without knowledge, since Shirk and Kufr did not occur except from lying. Allah said:

And follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not or witness not, etc.) that of which you have no knowledge (e.g. one’s saying: “I have seen,” while in fact he has not seen, or “I have heard,” while he has not heard). Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allah)].

Allah said:

And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely: “This is lawful and this is forbidden,” so as to invent lies against Allah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allah will never prosper. A passing brief enjoyment (will be theirs), but they will have a painful torment. [An-Nahl. 116-117]

Allah forbade lying and mentioned it alongside shirk. Allah said:

So shun the abomination (worshipping) of idol, and shun lying speech (false statements). Hunafa’ Lillah (i.e. to worship none but Allah), not associating partners (in worship, etc.) unto Him and whoever assigns partners to Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place. [Al-Hajj. 30-31]

This dangerous Shirk is established on lies and it is its greatest foundation and principle. Allah considers it as the severest type of wrongdoing. Allah said:

And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allah, while he is being invited to Islam? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers and disbelievers) folk. They intend to extinguish the Light of Allah with their mouths. But Allah will complete His Light even though the disbelievers hate (it). [As-Saff. 7-8]

Allah clarified their filthy goals and evil intentions, and that through their lies and fabrications, they intend to extinguish Allah’s guidance, His proofs, evidences and mighty signs. This is the same regarding everyone amongst the people of desires who wages war against the truth and its adherents, for they want to extinguish Allah’s guidance, nullify His proofs and evidences in order to give the upper hand to their falsehoods and misguidance. Allah, The Exalted, stated regarding lying and the liars:

فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن ڪَذَبَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلصِّدۡقِ إِذۡ جَآءَهُ ۥۤ‌ۚ أَلَيۡسَ فِى جَهَنَّمَ مَثۡوً۬ى لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ

Then, who does more wrong than one who utters a lie against Allah, and denies the truth when it comes to him! Is there not in Hell an abode for the disbelievers?] [Az-Zumar. 32]

This is the recompense for the liars. Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Avoid the seven destructive sins: Shirk, witchcraft, killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden to be killed, except in cases dictated by Islamic law; consuming usury, consuming the orphans’ wealth, fleeing from the battlefield and slandering chaste, innocent women”.

He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, placed slander- and it is one of the most loathsome types of lies – amongst these major sins that Allah commanded us to avoid due to its danger; rather the one who commits this slander is cursed in this life and the hereafter. Allah, The Exalted, said:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَرۡمُونَ ٱلۡمُحۡصَنَـٰتِ ٱلۡغَـٰفِلَـٰتِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِ لُعِنُواْ فِى ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأَخِرَةِ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ۬

Verily, those who accuse chaste women, who never even think of anything touching their chastity and are good believers, are cursed in this life and in the Hereafter, and for them will be a great torment]. [Surah an-Noor. Aayah 23]

Allah, The Exalted, stated with hatred towards the one who transmits lies and neither pondered nor had sound knowledge of the affair:

When you were propagating it with your tongues, and uttering with your mouths that whereof you had no knowledge, you counted it a little thing, while with Allah it was very great. And why did you not, when you heard it, say? “It is not right for us to speak of this. Glory be to You (O Allah) this is a great lie.” Allah forbids you from it and warns you not to repeat the like of it forever, if you are believers. [An-Nur . 15-17]

Allah said:

Verily, those who like that (the crime of) illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not]. [An-Nur 19]

This severe threat of punishment and dispraise is connected to slandering chaste women, and what is more dangerous than it is slandering those believers who are innocent- those who strive in the path of Allah, the callers to the path of Allah with truth and clear proofs. Indeed, the people of desires – those who wage war against the truth and its adherents – think that this is specific to the act of slandering chaste women!  Depraved is the thinking of the one who has this corrupt understanding! Indeed, this includes the one who violates the honour of the Muslims, especially the honour of the callers to the truth who are innocent, for indeed their honour has a great status that must be protected and not violated. It maybe that the one who violates this honour is more deserving of curse and punishment than the one who slanders chaste women due to a personal or worldly affair. Allaah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Whoever argues based on falsehood knowingly will not cease to be under the wrath of Allah until he stops. And whoever says about a believer that which is not true, he will reside in Radghat Al-Khabaal [pus] until he recants”. The one who knowingly argues based on falsehood as well as the one who says about a believer that which is not true, his recompense as it is stated is that  he will be imprisoned in the pus of the people of the hell fire. This is an authentic hadith that was reported by Abu Dawud, Ahmad and Al-Haakim. Return to As-Sahihah 338 by Al-Albaani, may Allah have mercy upon him.

He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “The worst form of usury is the violation of someone’s honour” – meaning the honour of those who are innocent. He said: “Verily, the worst act of usury is a man’s attack against the honour of his brother”. [As-Sahihah 1433 by Al-Albani and the other hadeeth that support this hadith] [Footnote a]

Allah, The Exalted, stated about those who lend an ear to lies and those affected by it amongst the Yahud, the Munaafiqoon and those who follow their way:

O Messenger (Muhammad)! Let not those who hurry to fall into disbelief grieve you, of such who say: “We believe” with their mouths but their hearts have no faith. And of the Yahood are men who listen much and eagerly to lies – listen to others who have not come to you. They change the words from their places; they say, “If you are given this, take it, but if you are not given this, then beware!” And whomsoever Allah wants to put in Al-Fitnah [error, because of his rejecting the Faith], you can do nothing for him against Allah. Those are the ones whose hearts Allah does not want to purify (from disbelief and hypocrisy); for them there is a disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a great torment. [Al-Ma’idah. 41]

Look at what is these verses regarding dispraise and severe disparagement for those who lend an ear to lies, those who transmit it in the world – and Allah’s refuge is sought- whilst not pondering and ascertaining, and not looking into the reality.

Indeed, the opponents of Ahlus Sunnah – amongst ahlul ahwaa (the followers of vain desires)- receive  pleasure from a share of these characteristics. Hypocrisy is feared for some of them lest these blameworthy characteristics applies to them, as well as the dispraise and punishment as a result. One of the punishments for liars is that which he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Beware of lying, for indeed lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the fire. And a man does not cease telling lies and endeavour to tell lies until he is written [i.e. judged] by Allah as a liar”. Rather lying can lead to major hypocrisy, Allah, The Exalted, said:

And of them are some who made a covenant with Allah (saying): “If He bestowed on us of His Bounty, we will verily, give Sadaqah (Zakat and voluntary charity in Allah’s Cause) and will be certainly among those who are righteous.” Then when He gave them of His Bounty, they became niggardly [refused to pay the Sadaqah (Zakat or voluntary charity)], and turned away, averse. So He punished them by putting hypocrisy into their hearts till the Day whereon they shall meet Him, because they broke that (covenant with Allah) which they had promised Him and because they used to tell lies. [at-Tawbah. 75-77]

Lying and breaking covenants plunged them into the sludge of hypocrisy – and Allah’s Refuge is sought, and the Messenger stated that lying is one of the signs of hypocrisy. He said, “The signs of a hypocrite are three: Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; whenever he promises, he always breaks it (his promise), and when trusted, he proves to be treacherous”.

Among the punishments for lying is that which the noble Messenger- the possessor of the highest moral character – has related  in a long hadith: “I saw two men who came to me and said, ‘The one you saw his jaw being torn apart is a liar. He used to tell a lie until it reaches the furthest regions and it was transmitted from him until the Day of Resurrection’”. He saw that man in whose mouth was placed an iron hook and torn off until it reached his ear; then the angel turned to the other jaw and tore it apart until it reached the man’s other ear, and then it returns as it was. And he will carry on with that until the day of Resurrection, just as the Messenger related. This is from the recompense for the liars. Numerous are liars today against the callers and carriers of the Salafi Dawah. They are able to disseminate cruel rumours till they reach the world using various means made available to them in this era. They divert people from Allah’s path and seek to make it crooked in order to further their falsehoods, twaddle, and dangerous innovations in religion that destroy sound belief, sound Islamic approaches to various subjects, and virtuous manners.

Indeed, Iblees – the cursed one and may Allah curse him- is the leader of the liars. He is the first of the liars and their leader, the first deceiver and betrayer. Allah [The Exalted] said:

وَيَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ ٱسۡكُنۡ أَنتَ وَزَوۡجُكَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنۡ حَيۡثُ شِئۡتُمَا وَلَا تَقۡرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zalimun (unjust and wrong-doers).” Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: “Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals.” And he [Shaitan (Satan)] swore by Allah to them both (saying): “Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both.” So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): “Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitan (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?” [Al-A’raf. 19-22]

Look at the wicked one! He said to them, “Your Lord did not forbid you from this tree save you should become angels – out of fear that you might become angles or immortals”. He swore by Allah to them and Adam did not perceive that anyone would swear by Allah out of lying, thus he believed him and was deceived. He misled them. Allah, The Exalted, said:

And (remember) when We said to the angels: “Prostrate yourselves to Adam.” They prostrated (all) except Iblis (Satan), who refused. Then We said: “O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. Verily, you have (a promise from Us) that you will never be hungry therein nor naked. And you (will) suffer not from thirst therein nor from the sun’s heat. Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered to him, saying : “O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?” Then they both ate of the tree, and so their private parts appeared to them, and they began to stick on themselves the leaves from Paradise for their covering. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray. Then his Lord chose him, and turned to him with forgiveness, and gave him guidance. [Taa Haa. 116-122]

Look at how he deceived them, fabricated and lied to them, and said to them through the path of the sincere advisers:  [هَلۡ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ وَمُلۡكٍ۬ لَّا يَبۡلَىٰ  – O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?] He deceived them with this, so they ate from the tree and the outcome was that which Allah related that their private parts became apparent to them. So, out of shyness, [وَطَفِقَا يَخۡصِفَانِ عَلَيۡہِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ‌ۚ   – they began to stick on themselves the leaves from Paradise for their covering]. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray. Then his Lord chose him, and turned to him with forgiveness, and gave him guidance. Thus is Allah’s Mercy for His friends; but Allah’s wrath, anger and curse has been ascertained against Iblees until the Day of Judgment, and he will be in Hell as the leader of those who will dwell in there forever.

Indeed, the followers of shaytan are the enemies of the truth in every era and place, and the enemies of the Messengers. Lying and slander is one of their greatest means (utilised) in their opposition to the Messengers and the mighty truth they brought, together with mighty and amazing signs. This is the path of every innovator in religious matters and a falsifier- he opposes the truth and its adherents through lies and slander; slandering the people of truth together with beautification of falsehood and adorning it for his followers, nullify their intellects and personalities. This adorned speech is through which falsehood is adopted from their leader Iblees – the cursed one, and from the followers of Fir’awn and the senior followers of Iblees, such as Fir’awn- the cursed one and may Allah deprived him of every good. He has many peers in this affair. Allah made known the lying and wickedness of this cursed one:

Has there come to you the story of Musa? When his Lord called him in the sacred valley of Tuwa; go to Fir’aun (Pharaoh), verily, he has transgressed all bounds (in crimes, sins, polytheism, disbelief, etc.). And say to him: “Would you purify yourself (from the sin of disbelief by becoming a believer)”; and that I guide you to your Lord, so you should fear Him? Then [Moosaa] showed him the great sign (miracles). But [Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] belied and disobeyed. Then he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah). Then he gathered his people and cried aloud, saying: “I am your lord, most high”, So Allah, seized him with punishment for his last [i.e. his saying: “I am your lord, most high”)] and first [(i.e. his saying, “O chiefs! I know not that you have a god other than I” (see Verse 28:38)] transgression. Verily, in this is an instructive admonition for whosoever fears Allah.

The enemy of Allah lied and said, “I am your Lord, most high”. Which lied can be more ugly than this wicked lie?! So Allah seized him for his lie, denial and disbelief, and made that an instructive admonition for those who fear Allah – those who give thought.

Among his lies was his statement to the magicians – when they believed after being defeated and subjugated through Allah’s amazing signs:

[Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] said: “Believe you in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission? Verily! He is your chief who taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you on the trunks of date-palms, and you shall surely know which of us [I (Fir’aun – Pharaoh) or the Lord of Musa (Moses) (Allah)] can give the severe and more lasting torment.” They said: “We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world. “Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults, and the magic to which you did compel us. And Allah is better as regards reward in comparison to your [Fir’aun’s (Pharaoh)] reward, and more lasting (as regards punishment in comparison to your punishment).” [Taa Haa. 71-73]

Look at this wicked slanderer! He said to them when they believed and submitted: [ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُ ۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡ -Believe you in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission?]; then he invented this mighty slander:  [إِنَّهُ ۥ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ‌ۖ  – Verily! He is your chief who taught you magic]- meaning, Musa, peace be upon him, when he brought those amazing signs.

The enemies of the Messengers did not confront them except with lies, falsely accused them of insanity, sorcery and what is similar to that. All this was from their lies and falsehoods, may Allah deprive them of every good. Many of Ahlul Ahwaa (the followers of vain desires) and Ahl Ad-Dalal (the people of misguidance) follow them in this manner by slandering the people of truth. Amongst the liars whom Allaah humiliated and made known their lies in the Qur’an are the Yahud, the Nasaaraa and the Mushrikoon in every religion and era, and amongst them were the pagan Arabs and their lies in matters of creed. Allah exposed them in various verses. Allah [تبارك وتعالى ] said: [وَيُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدً۬ا – And to warn those who say, “Allah has begotten a son (or offspring or children)]. [Al-Kahf. 4]

This includes the Yahud, the Nasaaraa, the Hindus, the Buddhists and the pagan Arabs. Allah said:

And to warn those (Jews, Christians, and pagans) who say, “Allah has begotten a son (or offspring or children).” No knowledge have they of such a thing, nor had their fathers. Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths [i.e. He begot (took) sons and daughters]. They utter nothing but a lie. [Al-Kahf. 4-5] – Meaning, attributing a son to Allah, which is nothing else but a mighty lie against. Thus, Allah humiliated them and made known their lie and slander. Allah said:

[And they say: “The Most Beneficent (Allah) has begotten a son (or offspring or children) [as the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say that He has begotten a son [‘Iesa (Christ)], and the pagan Arabs say that He has begotten daughters (angels, etc.)].” Indeed you have brought forth (said) a terrible evil thing]. Meaning, a horrible thing [i.e. to attribute a son to Allah].

Whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins; that they ascribe a son (or offspring or children) to the Most Beneficent (Allah). But it is not suitable for (the Majesty of) the Most Beneficent (Allah) that He should beget a son (or offspring or children). here is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto the Most Beneficent (Allah) as a slave. Verily, He knows each one of them, and has counted them a full counting. And everyone of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection (without any helper, or protector or defender). [Maryam. 90-95]

Allah made clear the danger of this lie and that the universe almost split asunder and cease to exist, and that the mountains almost fall in ruins due to this mighty slander which they fabricated about Allah. Allah freed himself from all imperfections, deficiencies, co-equals and partners with regards to this slander by way of which He was slandered by the Yahud, the Nasaaraa, the pagan Arabs and other than them amongst those who attributed a child to Him, whether Isa, peace be upon him, Uzayr, peace be upon him, the angels and others whom they attributed to Allah as His offspring based on lies and false testimony.

Allah said:

And the Jews (a sect among them) say: “Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah”, and the Christians say: “Messiah is the son of Allah”. That is a saying from their mouths. – meaning, lies. [يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ڪَفَرُواْ مِن قَبۡلُ‌ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ‌ۚ أَنَّىٰ يُؤۡفَڪُونَ – They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth!] [at-Tawbah. 30]

They took this belief – and Allah knows best – from the Hindus who preceded them in this horrendous disbelief and lies about Allah. All these people carry mighty lies – which cannot be enumerated here – related to matters of the Shariah and in declaring what is lawful and unlawful, such as what Allah has stated regarding the pagan Arabs, who made judgements about the Bahirah [a she-camel whose milk was spared for the idols and that nobody was allowed to milk it] or a Sa’ibah [a she-camel let loose for free pasture for their false gods and that nothing was allowed to be carried on it], or a Wasilah [a she-camel set free for idols because it has given birth to a she-camel at its first delivery and then again gives birth to a she-camel at its second delivery].

Allah stated when declaring this a lie:

Allah has not instituted things like Bahirah (a she-camel whose milk was spared for the idols and nobody was allowed to milk it) or a Sa’ibah (a she-camel let loose for free pasture for their false gods, e.g. idols, etc., and nothing was allowed to be carried on it), or a Wasilah (a she-camel set free for idols because it has given birth to a she-camel at its first delivery and then again gives birth to a she-camel at its second delivery) or a Ham (a stallion-camel freed from work for their idols, after it had finished a number of copulations assigned for it, all these animals were liberated in honour of idols as practised by pagan Arabs in the pre-Islamic period). But those who disbelieve invent lies against Allah, and most of them have no understanding]. [Al-Ma’idah. 103]

By Allah, they are liars and foolish people who are deprived of sound intellect. Allah said:

So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you. And be grateful for the Graces of Allah, if it is He Whom you worship. He has forbidden you only Al-Maytatah (meat of a dead animal), blood, the flesh of swine, and any animal which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah (or has been slaughtered for idols etc. or on which Allah’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, and not transgressing, then, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.  And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely: “This is lawful and this is forbidden,” so as to invent lies against Allah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allah will never prosper. A passing brief enjoyment (will be theirs), but they will have a painful torment. [An-Nahl. 114-117]

This was an address to the Arabs who instituted things like Bahirah or a Sa’ibah, and due to this Allah declared this matter of theirs a lie. Allah made it known that what they declared unlawful or lawful is tantamount to lies invented about Allah, that the liars will not be successful, their enjoyment through lies and slanders is a brief enjoyment and an eternal punishment awaits them – a painful punishment.

Allah stated about the Yahud and Nasaaraa:

Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, “This is from Allah,” to purchase with it a little price! Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for that they earn thereby]. [Al-Baqarah. 79]

Among the categories of liars are the Munaafiqoon and they are more dangerous for the society, especially the Islamic society. Due to this Allah spoke about them a lot, warned against them a lot and made known their characteristics in chapters of the Qur’an; rather there is an independent chapter of the Qur’an called Surah Al-Munaafiqoon. Allah exposed them, unveil their shame, hypocrisy and lies. And from that which Allah stated about them is: [وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ – And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: “We believe in Allah and the Last Day” while in fact they believe not] – Meaning, they are liars.

They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!  In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. And when it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “We are only peacemakers.”

Look at this big claim! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not]. Every liar and corrupt person in the earth does not tell the people that he is a corrupt person; rather he says, “I am one who rectifies the affairs” and claims that he leads the Ummah to righteousness. In summary, indeed Allaah made known their lies and deception, and that this lie increases them in sickness – and Allah’s Refuge is sought, they are from the people of hypocrisy and they are increased in hypocrisy.

Allah said: [أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوۡاْ قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡہِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمۡ وَلَا مِنۡہُمۡ وَيَحۡلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلۡكَذِبِ وَهُمۡ يَعۡلَمُونَ  – Have you (O Muhammad) not seen those (hypocrites) who take for friends a people upon whom is the Wrath of Allah (i.e. Jews)? They are neither of you (Muslims) nor of them (Jews), and they swear to a lie while they know. [Al-Mujaadilah. 14]

They made an oath to the believers that they are indeed believers, whilst they are Munaafiqoon, liars and allies of the Yahud. [ أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ عَذَابً۬ا شَدِيدًا‌ۖ إِنَّهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ – Allah has prepared for them a severe torment. Evil indeed is that which they used to do]. [ٱتَّخَذُوٓاْ أَيۡمَـٰنَہُمۡ جُنَّةً۬  – They have made their oaths a screen] – Meaning, for their lies.

Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, so they shall have a humiliating torment. Their children and their wealth will avail them nothing against Allah. They will be (the) dwellers of the Fire, to dwell therein forever. On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together (for their account), then they will swear to Him as they swear to you (O Muslims). And they think that they have something (to stand upon). Verily, they are liars! Shaitan (Satan) has overtaken them. So he has made them forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Shaitan (Satan). Verily, it is the party of Shaitan (Satan) that will be the losers! Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), they will be among the lowest (most humiliated). Allah has decreed: “Verily! It is I and My Messengers who shall be the victorious.” Verily, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty. [al-Mujaadilah. 15-21]

Allah made known the state of affairs of these people, exposed them, made it known that they are liars and described their actions to be evil. And due to their state of loss, they took these oaths and swearing by Allaah as a screen.. ..Allah said:

When the hypocrites come to you (O Muhammad), they say: “We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.” Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars indeed. They have made their oaths a screen (for their hypocrisy). Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah. Verily, evil is what they used to do. That is because they believed, then disbelieved, therefore their hearts are sealed, so they understand not. And when you look at them, their bodies please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as blocks of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies, so beware of them. May Allah curse them! How are they denying (or deviating from) the Right Path. And when it is said to them: “Come, so that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness from Allah for you”, they turn aside their heads, and you would see them turning away their faces in pride. It is equal to them whether you (Muhammad) ask forgiveness or ask not forgiveness for them. Verily, Allah guides not the people who are the Fasiqin (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). [Al-Munaafiqoon. 1-6]

Allah testified that they are liars; even if they testified to the Messengership of Muhammad and that Allah alone has the right to be worshipped, they are still liars and do not believe in that. Allah exposed them, because He knows their reality- the disbelief and hypocrisy they hide in their hearts. Allah made it known that they disbelieved and believed thereafter, then they disbelieved finally; and Allah made it known that they do not understand and that even if Allah’s Messenger – the most virtuous amongst the creation – sought forgiveness for them, they will not be forgiven and Allah will not guide them to Iman and the truth due to their [willful] wickedness and evil. And there maybe hypocrites in the Ummah who have these characteristics and thus receive this recompense from Allah. Unfortunately, some people think that hypocrisy has ended, whilst in reality it is something that will continue. Hudhaifah said, “The hypocrites at present are more evil than the hypocrites during the era of Allah’s Messenger”, so he was asked about this, then he said, “Indeed, the hypocrites used to hide their hypocrisy and these people at present make it manifest”. Whenever time elapses, they become many amongst the groups of ahlul bidah, and burden Islam and the Muslims with their evil, plots and hypocrisy; and all of that is done under the guise of Islam and in the name of Islam. Many of ahlul bidah or many innovations – in the past and thereafter – related to belief and affairs of shirk are from their plots and cunning ways. So, let the Muslims be careful of these hypocrites and infiltrators within the innovated groups.

[Footnote b]

Among the different types of liars are the Dajaajilah (those whose lies are accompanied with deception, beatification of the lies and tricks to convince the people), whom the Prophet spoke about, and reality testifies to the truthfulness of that which this noble Messenger stated, because he never speaks out of his own desire. He said: “The hour will not be established until two big groups fight each other whereupon there will be a great number of casualties on both sides and they will be following one and the same religious doctrine, and until about thirty Dajjaals and liars appear, and each one of them will claim that he is Allah’s Messenger, and until sound religious knowledge is taken away [i.e. due to death of rightly guided scholars], earthquakes will increase in number and time will pass quickly”. [Sahih Al-Bukhari]  The testimony in this hadith is the statement of the Messenger, “Until about thirty Dajjaals and liars appear, and each one of them will claim that he is Allah’s Messenger”. The Messenger said, “During the close approach of the hour there will be liars, so beware of them”.

Unfortunately, many people do not take this Prophetic advice in order to be cautious of the liars. There is a long hadith narrated by Thawbaan from Allah’s Messenger, who said, “What I fear for you the most is the leaders of misguidance” until he said, “Indeed, there will be thirty liars in my Ummah and each of them will claim that he is a Prophet, but I am the seal of the Prophets and there no Prophet after me”.

The greatest trial will be that of the greatest Dajjaaj whom all the Prophets warned against, and the one who warned against him the most was our Prophet. The narrations regarding this are Mutawaatir and its affair is well-known amongst the Muslims, but despite this, Allah’s Messenger stated that there is one more dangerous for the Ummah than Dajjaaj. Sam’aan said, “Allah’s Messenger mentioned Dajjal one morning as something despised, but also alarming, until we thought that he was in the stand of date-palm trees. When we came to Allah’s Messenger in the evening, he saw that (fear) in us, and said, ‘What is the matter with you?’ We said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! You mentioned Dajjaal this morning, and you spoke of him as something despised but also alarming, until we thought that he was in the stand of date-palm trees’. He said, ‘There are things that I fear more for you than the Dajjaal. If he appears while I am among you, I will contend with him on your behalf, and if he appears when I am not among you, then each man must fend for himself, and Allah will take care of every Muslim on my behalf’”. [Sahih Muslim 2933]

Among these Dajjaals – liars – whom Allah’s Messenger warned against was Musaylimah, the Liar at Yamaamah and Al-Aswad Al-Unsee who claimed prophethood, and as a result many Arabs exited Islam. Allah destroyed them and others were destroyed, and their trial was ended by way of the swords of the companions of Allah’s Messenger. Among the liars who claimed prophethood was Mukhtar Bin Abee Ubayd Ath-Thaqafee, the liar about whom the Messenger stated, “A liar will appear from Thaqeef a blood shedder”. [Sahih Muslim 2545] The liar was Al-Mukhtaar and the blood shedder was al-Hajjaaj. And from those who claimed prophethood was Al-Haarith the liar, and Ghulaam Ahmad Al-Qadiyaanee Al-Hindee who had followers dispersed in the world and they claim that Prophethood is still ongoing. Every liar has other wicked liars connected to him – those similar to their Shaikh. And from these liars in general was the Yahudi, the wicked Abdullah Ibn Saba, who falsely claimed to be Muslim and incited many of the rabble against the Rightly Guided Khaleefah Uthmaan Bin Affaan until he was martyred in that trial. He is the founder of the doctrine of the Rafida Shiites and its filthy principles, and exaggeration the status of the Prophet’s family until they deified them. Many of them declare Ali an object of worship and many of them say that Ali is the one whom the Prophet gave the authority of rulership after him, and that Ali will return to do such and such, meaning, he will kill AbuBakr, Umar and five-hundred Khulafaa of Banee Umayyyah and Banee Abbaas. This wicked one [i.e. Ibn Saba] initiated the act of revilement against the companions of the Prophet and other matters related to the trial he initiated which the heretics promote and are firmly established upon, as well as the figureheads of the Rafida- the liars. Thus, they fill the world with lies and slanders. Their religion is established on lies and misguidance.

And among those Dajjaals – liars – are the figureheads of bidah and misguidance, such as Jahm Bin Safwaan, the figureheads of the Khawaarij, the Mutazilah, the Huloolee Soofees and grave worshippers, such as Nidhaam Al-Mutazilee, Hallaaj the heretic, Ibn Arabi the heretic, Ibn Sab’een, At-Tilimsaanee and other than them amongst the heretics – liars who hid within Islam, infiltrators within the ranks of the people of Tasawwuf, because the people of Tasawwuf  were a fertile ground for these types of people amongst the heretics, just as the Raafida are a spacious room for the heretics. [Footnote c]

Among the liars in this era are the figureheads of the political groups, such as the secularists and Baathists (Arab Nationalists), and many of the people who carry alluring slogans in the name of Islam, such as Islamic socialism, Islamic democracy, the call to unity of religions and many other misguided claims made in the name of Islam. [Footnote d]

This takes place amongst groups who claim that they are seeking to raise Islam very high and that they are established to return the Islamic Ummah to its past glory; however they increase the people in misguidance and darkness, and Allah’s Refuge is sought. This poses a more severe danger to the people and the youth, therefore it is obligated on the Muslims and the students of knowledge to be extremely cautious of all these types of people, warn the Muslims against their plots and plans, and unveil their secrets. And the Muslims should adhere firmly to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet; follow the pious predecessors in their creed, methodology, loyalty and disassociation, and to deal with this dangerous category of people about whom the Messenger feared for his Ummah – warn them against these groups and make it known that he feared for them regarding these people more than he feared for them regarding Dajjaal, so that they deal with them in the manner that the pious predecessors dealt with them-  by being cautious, warning against them, unveiling their hidden affairs (i.e. misguidance) and making known the defects within them in order to protect the religion and as a means of sincere advice to the Muslims.

With regards to the conflict between the adherents to truth and the adherents to falsehood in every era and place, the truth must reach its goal which Allah has promised -that the religion He has ordained will supersede, the adherents to truth will be given the upper hand over the adherents to falsehood and it is a must that falsehood and its adherents will be defeated and end in failure. Therefore, it is obligated to the adherents to truth – pure Ahlus Sunnah – to be upon steadfastness and resilience, embark upon hard work with everything by way of which they are able to aid the religion ordained by Allah in creed, commands, prohibitions, rulings and methodology; and that they give it the upper hand against falsehood in all its forms and images, whether it is disbelief or hypocrisy coated with Islam, a manifest bidah or a bidah coated with Islam. Allah said:

[ هو الذي أرسل رسوله بالهدى ودين الحق ليظهره على الدين كله ولو كره المشركون – It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islam), to make it superior over all religions even though the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) hate (it)]. [at-Tawbah. 33]

Ahlul Ahwaa share this hatred with them, therefore, there’s nothing else except that the adherents to truth employ the legislated means to actualise this promise and matter that is incumbent upon the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah. Wherever the adherents to the Salafi methodology and its students are or wherever they go, it is obligated to them to step up and aid one another to raise the word of truth, Tawheed and Sunnah, and to subdue innovation in religious matters, misguidance and doubts; establish Allah’s proofs against all the various misguided people, make known the reality of the liars and the fakers. They have to know that the opponents against the truth have reached the highest level of plotting and planning, and from this is their preoccupation with the task of silencing many amongst Ahlus Sunnah and the adherents to truth, and restraining them from confronting the falsehood that is covered in the garb of truth. This category of people amongst the adherents to falsehood are more intense in employing lies, duplicity and pretending to possess that which they do not possess; so they are just as the Messenger stated, “The one who pretends that he has been given what he has not been given, is just like the (false) one who wears two garments of falsehood”.

We find them as ones who praise the people of falsehood the most and making their affair to appear pleasing, whilst they are the most severe in speaking ill against the adherents to the truth and its callers. Indeed, they have set up corrupt principles to aid falsehood and the adherents to misguided methodologies; waging war against the adherents to truth by devising plots and repugnant affairs, manifesting their hatred and enmity against the adherents to truth and hastening-  without boredom and tiredness – to instruct the youth to oppose the people of truth, striving hard to aid falsehood and topple the adherents to truth. We ask Allah  to raise His Word and guide these people or relieve the Ummah of their Indeed, our Lord is One who hears invocation. And may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our Sayyid Muhammad, his family and companions until the day of judgement.

Footnote a: “Verily, the worst act of usury is to attack the reputation of a Muslim”. Meaning, the greater in evil and the more severely prohibited is to unleash the tongue against the honour of a Muslim by belittling him, behaving arrogantly towards him and speaking ill against him by way of slander or verbal abuse. This becomes more severe in prohibition because honour is more noble than one’s self and wealth.

“Without a just cause”. Meaning, this shows that there are cases where one is allowed to speak about someone, saying, such and such is an oppressor or transgressor, or making a mention of an innovator and an open sinner with the intention to issue warning. At-Teebee, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Honour enters into the types of wealth from the angle of emphasis. Usury is categorised into the two types: customary and it is what is taken as an addition from debtors, and the one that is not customary, such as a person attacking the honour of someone with his tongue. [An Excerpt from ‘Awnul Mabood Sharh Sunan Abee Daawud’ 13/152]

This (i.e. violating the honour of a Muslim) has been referred to as usury because the transgressor safeguards his honour and then goes beyond it, thus it is as if he has added an increase that encroaches the boundaries in connection with the honour of a Muslim which is more valuable than his wealth. Al-Qadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “Attacking a Muslim’s honour is to deal with him more than what he deserves of that which is to be said about him, or more than what is allowed to say about him. This is why it is likened to usury and considered one of its types”. [An Excerpt from ‘Mirqaatul Mafaateeh Sharh Mishkaat Al-Masaabeeh’ 8/3157]

The Comprehensive, All-Encompassing and Universal Message

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The Ummah of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, does not require anyone after him; their sole necessity is for someone to convey his teachings. The message of Muhammad is all-encompassing, universal, and (perfectly) preserved. This universality, comprehensiveness, and preservation are not confined to any (specific time, place, or circumstance); instead, they extend to all those to whom Muhammad was sent, as well as addressing all the fundamental and subsidiary matters of the religion.

Muhammad’s message is sufficient, all-encompassing, and universal—there is no requirement for anything beyond it. It has addressed every aspect of truth necessary for his Ummah in their knowledge and actions. Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not depart from this world without imparting to his Ummah all that they needed to know. He taught them the etiquettes of using the toilet, sexual relations, the etiquettes of sleep and waking, eating, drinking, and traveling. He acquainted them with the etiquettes of speech and silence; the etiquettes of keeping company with the people and seclusion. He acquainted them with matters regarding illness, good health, poverty and wealth, and all matters regarding life and death.

He described Allah’s throne, the angels, the jinn, the fire of hell, and the Day of Judgment in a way that made them feel as though they were witnessing these realities with the naked eye. He conveyed knowledge about their Lord, His Perfect Names and Attributes, emphasising that Allah is the only One who deserves their worship. He acquainted them with the ancient Prophets and their respective nations- the events that transpired between them as if one were witnessing those moments firsthand. He informed them of all the avenues leading to righteousness and the various paths of wrongdoing, both broadly and specifically, in a manner that no other prophet had conveyed to his people. He acquiainted them with death and will take place in the grave, whether they be of joy or torment. Additionally, he presented the evidences and proofs of Tawhid (pure Islamic Monotheism). He acquainted them with Prophethood and the matters concerning the Afterlife, while also countering all factions of disbelief and misguidance. He acquainted them with war strategies- how to confront the enemy, the way to achieve victory and conquests. If they were aware of and comprehended these matters appropriately, they would not be defeated by their adversary.

He acquainted them with the schemes of Iblees, the methods by which he seeks to influence them, and the strategies to counteract those schemes and plans. He acquainted them with the soul- its characteristics and faults- in such a manner that they are not in need of anyone else to tell them about it.

He instructed them on how to navigate their everyday existence, and had they recognized and implemented his teachings, their worldly matters would have been securely established. He provided them with all the means necessary for success in both this life and the hereafter, rendering them independent of any other guidance. Therefore, it is unfounded to assert that the path of Muhammad requires any external support. Such claims stem from a limited and insufficient understanding on the part of the individual. Allah said:

Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) which is recited to them? Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder (or an admonition) for a people who believe. [29:51]

Allah [The Most High] said:
وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ

And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims)]. [16:89]

Allah [The Most High] said:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord [i.e. the Qur’an, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil], and a healing for that [disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.] in your breasts, – a guidance and a mercy [explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.] for the believers. [10:57]

The Costliest Mistake In the Annals of Human History

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Shirk: The Costliest Mistake In the Annals of Human History and The Evil of Venerating Those Responsible for It Under The Pretence of Admiring Advancements of Worldly Sciences

Allah [The Exalted] says:

Mankind were one community and Allah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent the Scripture in truth to judge between people in matters wherein they differed. And only those to whom (the Scripture) was given differed concerning it after clear proofs had come unto them through hatred, one to another. Then Allah by His Leave guided those who believed to the truth of that wherein they differed. And Allah guides whom He wills to a Straight Path. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 213]

Ibn Abbas [may Allah be pleased with him and his father] said, “Between Nuh and Adam, ten generations followed the right path of worshipping Allah alone. However, they eventually differed and began worshipping idols, false gods, and images. Then Allah sent Messengers with clear signs and proofs”. [1] The practice of attributing partners to Allah originated with the nation of Prophet Nuh [peace be upon him] when they began exaggerating the status of righteous individuals and arrogantly ignored the teachings of their Prophet. Allah says:

And they have said: ‘You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth, nor Ya’uq, nor Nasr]. [2]

Ibn Abbas [may Allah be pleased with him and his father] stated that these individuals were righteous individuals from prophet Nuh’s nation. After their demise, Shaytaan influenced the people to erect idols at the locations where they used to gather and to refer to these idols by their names. Although the idols were established, they were not worshipped until the original initiators had passed away and the true origin of the idols became unclear. It was at this point that people began to worship them. [3]

The Destructive Consequences of Shirk

Allah [The Most High] says:

حُنَفَآءَ لِلَّهِ غَيۡرَ مُشۡرِكِينَ بِهِۦ‌ۚ وَمَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتَخۡطَفُهُ ٱلطَّيۡرُ أَوۡ تَهۡوِى بِهِ ٱلرِّيحُ فِى مَكَانٍ۬ سَحِيقٍ۬

Hunafaa’ Lillaah [i.e. worship none but Allaah], not associating partners [in worship, etc.] with Him; and whoever associates partners to Allaah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had thrown him to a far-off place]. [Surah Al-Hajj. Ayah 31]

This is the situation of one who ascribes partners with Allah in worship. Iman is like the sky, protected and elevated. So, when someone abandons Iman, it is like falling from the sky and facing terrible consequences and disasters, snatched by birds (of prey) that tear them apart. When someone who ascribes partners with Allah in worship abandons the protection of Iman, the devils attack them from all directions, destroying their religion and the (purpose) of their worldly life. [4]

In this verse, Allah has clearly stated that those who ascribe partners with Him and do not repent before their death will face utter destruction. They will have no escape and no chance of salvation. Their fate is like that of someone who falls from the sky, lands on the earth, and gets torn apart completely. The birds then seize their remains and the wind scatters them far away, carried by its powerful gusts. Therefore, anyone who finds themselves in such a predicament will find no solace or security. Instead, they will face inevitable destruction because what normally takes place is that those who plummet from the sky to the ground suffer severe dismemberment upon impact. The birds) of prey) seize his limbs and disperse with them, or the wind carries him to a distant land, thus leading to an unavoidable demise. The noble verse highlights the inevitable destruction faced by those who ascribe partners with Allah, an affair reiterated in another part of the Qur’an as follows:

إِنَّهُ ۥ مَن يُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ وَمَأۡوَٮٰهُ ٱلنَّارُ‌ۖ

Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode]. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Ayah 72]

Allah [The Exalted] said: [إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغۡفِرُ أَن يُشۡرَكَ بِهِ – Verily, Allah does not forgive (a person the sin of associating partners with Him in worship), but He forgives lesser than that to whomsover He wills]. [Surah An-Nisaa Ayah 48]

Various verses demonstrate that this inevitable punishment is reserved for those who die while committing shirk and do not seek forgiveness. However, for those who repent before their death, Allah will forgive them, as sincere worship of Him erases previous sins. There are several verses regarding this, such as Allah’s statement:

قُل لِّلَّذِينَ ڪَفَرُوٓاْ إِن يَنتَهُواْ يُغۡفَرۡ لَهُم مَّا قَدۡ سَلَفَ

Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven]. [Surah Al-Anfaal. Ayah 38]

Allah says:

And verily, I am indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds]. [Surah Taahaa. Aayah 82] However, if one’s repentance is at the time of death [i.e. when the soul reaches the throat], it will not benefit him. [5]

Venerating The Advocates of Shirk Under The Pretence of Admiring Advancements of Worldly Sciences

The individuals at Daily Sabah are in dire need of a significant reminder, given the title they have assigned to one of their articles: “Archaeologists reshaped world history in 2022 with new discoveries.” According to their claims, these discoveries include the Oldest predator fossil, Tuscan statues dating back 2,300 years, the First-ever amputation, and Shipwrecks and gods. https://www.dailysabah.com/life/history/archaeologists-reshaped-world-history-in-2022-with-new-discoveries

If Muslims authored this article, it serves as a reminder that they are investing their time in matters that hold no benefit for them in the afterlife. Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [may Allah preserve him] stated:

“The focus on artefacts by Archaeologists in this era was not present during the era of the Prophet’s companions and the pious predecessors. Instead, Muslims began to imitate the Europeans and Americans, who aimed to revive pre-Islamic nationalistic traits like Pharaonism, Babylonianism, and Phoenicianism in the Muslim lands. They were largely successful in achieving these objectives, leading to the emergence of pre-Islamic national pride and the glorification of these nationalistic identities in Muslim societies. Imam Al-Bukhaaree said: “Abdullah Bin Muhammad Al-Ju’fee narrated to us that Abdur Razzaaq narrated to them from Az-Zuhree who narrated from Salim, who narrated from Ibn Umar who said that when the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] passed by Al-Hijr, he said, ‘Do not enter the dwelling places of those people who were unjust to themselves unless you enter in a weeping state lest the same calamity similar to theirs should befall you’. Then he covered his head and increased his speed till he crossed the valley. Yahyah Bin Bukayr narrated to us who said that Malik narrated to us from Abdullah Bin Deenaar who reported from Ibn Umar who said that Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said to his companions who were at Al-Hijr, “Do not enter upon these people who are being punished, except in a weeping state, lest the same calamity similar to theirs should befall you”. [Sahih Al-Bukhaari. Numbers 4419 and 4420]

The two Prophetic reports illustrate the peril of entering into the places of those who have earned Allah’s wrath and were consequently annihilated for their disbelief and rejection of the prophets and their message. The Prophet prohibited entry into such places, except for those who fear Allah and dread His punishment. In cases of dire necessity, he may enter these locations while weeping. It is feared that one who enters the dwellings of those who have been punished may suffer the same punishment. It is legislated for those who approach these dwellings to quickly pass by while covering their faces, following the example of Allah’s Messenger. Do Muslims, including archaeologists and those who encourage them, comprehend what is embodied in this guidance from the Prophet, who speaks not from his desires? Additionally, Allah’s Messenger advised those passing through the valleys of Muhassar to hasten, as it was the location where Allah destroyed the people of the Elephant.

So, do those who dig up the artefacts of Ad, Thamud, the Ashaab Al-Ukh’dud, the Pharaohs, and the Babylonians, follow the teachings of Allah’s Messenger or blindly follow the enemies of Allah who establish partnerships to explore the artefacts of the destroyed nations to entice them (towards) the pride of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance? I and others have read numerous boasting by Muslims or those who ascribe to Islam, such as the statement of one of them, (as follows), “O Misree (i.e. Egyptian)! Be proud of the builders of your glory when people were sleeping”. He boasts about the Pharaonic artifacts such as the pyramids and other than them. [5.1]

However, if the authors of this article from Daily Sabah are non-Muslims, it is important to emphasise to them that the ultimate objective of human existence is to surrender oneself to the Creator through sincere worship, following the teachings of His final Messenger, and refraining from everything that contradicts this path. They must avoid being deceived by these discoveries. Imam As-Sadi [may Allah have mercy upon him] stated:

The greatest evils of knowledge and contradictions arise when one becomes familiar with the creation without acknowledging its Creator, understanding the effects without recognizing the One who brought them into existence, comprehending the causes without acknowledging the One who caused them, and grasping the paths without understanding their true objectives. The lack in this particular form of familiarity is abundant and its negative impact is significant. Indeed, numerous atheists and those who have been misled by them possess expertise in the field of natural sciences. However, they confine themselves solely to this realm and remain oblivious to its connection with its Creator and the One who caused it to exist. Furthermore, when it comes to the marvels and hidden truths embedded within these natural sciences, they perceive themselves as the sole possessors of knowledge in this domain – knowledge that no one else possesses. This inflated sense of superiority leads them to become afflicted with arrogance and self-delusion.

They confine themselves to it and consider it as the result, the objective, and the aim, thus causing significant deviation and deficiency in knowledge and intellect. If they were aware of and affirmed belief in the true Creator and the One Who Controls all the affairs of the Universe – the One who connected the means and causes to His Qadaa Wal-Qadr, they would know that the means and causes are a manifestation of His Perfect Wisdom because Allah [The Exalted] is All-Wise. He placed everything in its rightful place, established a remarkable and orderly system for both the intricate and major matters, and provided everything that is sought after and desired with a means or cause, and a path that leads to it. If they were to connect these means, paths, and outcomes to Allah’s Qadaa Wal Qadr, their knowledge would be perfected and they would attain a level of certainty that cannot be attained by those who have not reached their level. However, they are content and proud of their limited knowledge of these worldly paths and their tangible outcomes, which has led them to arrogance. Thus, the statement of Allah [The Most High] applies to them:

فلما جاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات فرحوا بما عندهم من العلم وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزئون

Then when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were glad (and proud) with that which they had of the knowledge (of worldly things): And that at which they used to mock, surrounded them (i.e. the punishment)]. [Surah Ghaafir. Aayah 83]

Allāh said:

And indeed We had firmly established them with that wherewith We have not established you (O Quraish)! And We had assigned them the (faculties of) hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and hearts, but their hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and their hearts availed them nothing since they used to deny the Ayat (Allah’s Prophets and their Prophethood, proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, and they were completely encircled by that which they used to mock at! [Surah Al-Ahqaaf. Ayah 26]

This is the greatest evil outcome of self-admiration and haughtiness without any exceptions, and the most dangerous route that ensnares and deludes numerous individuals; hence, we beseech Allah to bestow upon us the pure knowledge that is fortified by sound intellect, divine text, and sound natural disposition- the knowledge that the servant comprehends in its entirety, and the knowledge that connects the secondary matters to its solid foundational principles, and its methods, reasons, consequences, and results are attributed to the Creator who initiated and created them. The one who holds this knowledge does not disassociate the creation from its Creator, nor separates its impacts from the One who caused them to happen, nor separates the wisdom, the hidden truths, and the incredibly organised systems in the creation from the One who Created and Perfected them, arranged them perfectly, and brought them into being before they did not exist. This knowledge yields the fruits of certainty, leading to inner peace, happiness, and achievement. It yields the fruits of good character and virtuous actions, beneficial for both religious and worldly matters.

As for the sciences of those who have strayed from the prophetic path – as previously mentioned – they are distorted, severed, and stagnant. Its usefulness is comparable to the benefits of physical industries, evident and observable. It does not yield the fruits of sound faith or integrity, nor does it embody mercy or good conduct; rather, its fruits are the opposite. Those with sound intellect and high intelligence are deeply saddened by the objectives and outcomes of these sciences, for a sound intellect comprehends and fully understands matters in all their dimensions. It engages with beneficial knowledge, utilises the talents and skills bestowed upon a servant of Allah, and combines the affairs about one’s well-being in this worldly life and the Hereafter. It encompasses that which benefits both the body and the soul, thoroughly examines principles and consequences, and establishes connections between related matters. Indeed, anyone lacking these qualities is deficient in their intellect, so what about their religion?!

Among the indications of those who have strayed in terms of religion and intellect is their deception by their own opinions and flawed intellects, as well as their ridicule of the intellects of the noblest human beings, including the Prophets, their followers, and those who provide guidance. Their arrogance is evident through their excessive behaviour, rejection of undeniable truths, and deliberate denial of the virtues of those who came before them. By obstructing people from the religion and path prescribed by Allah, they distort the teachings of the Messengers. They dismiss these teachings as outdated and irrelevant, much like the enemies of the Messengers did in the past. Unfortunately, many individuals, especially the young and inexperienced, have been led astray by these false beliefs. They must understand that true intellect can only be attained through divine revelation, the Qur’an, and the guidance brought by the Messenger. Allāh [The Most High] says: [إن في ذلك لآيات لأولي النهى – Verily, in this are proofs and signs for men of understanding]. [Surah Taha. Ayah 54] [لآيات لأولي الألباب – There are indeed signs for men of understanding]. [Surah Al Imran. Ayah 190]

They are people of decent intellect, rightly guided views, and purified manners. Can one find sound intellects that can be anywhere closer to the (perfect, unmatched, unblemished, upright) intellect of the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] without whom the intellects and views cannot be illuminated except through his intellect? The perfection of the intellect is based on how much they have obtained from his intelligence, what he deems to be correct, and his guidance and perfect path which is free from error, so they nourish themselves with its light, guidance and the perfect course it leads to. [6]

Therefore, whether the article at Daily Sabah was written by Muslims or non-Muslims, they need to be reminded about the relationship between us and our forefathers. Allah [The Exalted] says: [قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ سُنَنٌ فَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ – Many similar mishaps [troubles, problems] of life were faced by nations that have passed away before you, so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Verse 137]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: Indeed, there were nations like yourselves before you, so look to their evil end. You have to know that the reason behind their evil end was due to their disbelief in the revelations of Allah and disbelief in Allah’s Messengers. They were the forefathers and you are the descendants. The main affair that connects you is your disbelief and the ruling on that disbelief is destruction. [7]

Imam Muhammad Bin Saalih Al-Uthaymeen [may Allah have mercy upon him] said: If it is said, “What is the benefit in narrating to us the stories of the destroyed nations even though this Ummah will not be destroyed like the destruction of the previous nations before it?”.

The Answer: Truly, there are two advantages to this situation: Firstly, it serves as a reminder of Allah’s blessings upon us by averting the destruction that could have befallen us, highlighting His mercy towards us. Secondly, the punishment inflicted upon wrongdoers in this world may also be a reflection of what awaits them in the Hereafter if they do not repent. This is emphasised in the verse: “Such is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the population of towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful and severe. Indeed in that (there) is a sure lesson for those who fear the torment of the Hereafter.” Therefore, it is evident from this verse that a similar fate may await wrongdoers in the Hereafter, and only Allah knows best. Supplication for our children in the Quran

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The inspiration for this article arose from a captivating tweet by Shaikh Abdulilah, may Allah preserve him. In light of this, we felt compelled to share a short selection of insights from the Mufassiroon, as an additional layer of reflection and benefit alongside the Shaikh’s reminder, for our own benefit and our families.

And We have enjoined upon man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bore him (in her womb) with hardship and gave birth to him with (more) hardship. And his bearing (in the womb) and weaning (period) is thirty months (in total). (Then he continues to grow) until, when he reaches the peak of his youth, and reaches (the age of) 40 years, he says: “O my Lord, grant me the ability to be grateful to you for Your favour (of guidance) which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to work righteousness that pleases You, and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I repent to you and I am of the Muslims (in submission to You alone).” (1)

“And make righteous for me my offspring”.

When he supplicated for his own righteousness, he also supplicated for his offspring that Allah rectifies their affairs. He (Allah) stated that their righteousness would benefit their parents due to His statement:

وَأَصْلِحْ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِي

“And make righteous for me my offspring”. (2)

Then when she delivered her [child Maryam (Mary)], she said: “O my Lord! I have delivered a female child,” – and Allah knew better what she delivered, – “And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam (Mary), and I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and for her offspring from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast.” [3:36]

And I seek refuge with You (Allah) for her and for her offspring from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast.

She supplicated for her and her offspring, asking Allah to protect them from the accursed devil. (3)

And those who say: “Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders for the pious”. [25:74]

They ask Allah to grant them the comfort of the eye by making their wives and offspring obedient to Allah, and to grant them happiness intheir hearts due to being followed by the righteous in obedience and servitude to Allaah. That is because a trustworthy leader in the religion co-operates with (others) upon obedience (to Allaah and His Messenger). (4)

O my Lord! Make me one who performs As-Salat, and (also) from my offspring, our Lord! And accept my invocation. [14:40]

Meaning: from those who establish the prayer with its pillars and guard it strictly (or be consistent upon it). Make my descendants among those who establish the prayer. (5)

Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage – Hajj and ‘Umrah, etc.), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. [2:128]

They supplicated for themselves and their offspring to be granted Islam, whose reality is the submission of the heart and its obedience to its Lord, which necessitates the obedience of the limbs. (6)

At that time Zakariyyah invoked his Lord, saying: “O my Lord! Grant me from You, a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation.” [3:38]

Zakariyyah, peace be upon him, sipplicated to his Lord for righteous offspring; meaning, children with pure morals and good manners, to complete the blessings of both religious and worldly life for them, thus his supplication was answered. (7)

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said: “O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) one of peace and security, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. [14:35]

Meaning: Distance me and them from  worshiping the idols. (8) Then he mentioned the reason for his fear for himself and his children due to the many who have been tempted and afflicted by its worship. (9)

Useless Claim

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

“Our civilization was great. The Pharaohs were dark-skinned people and we must celebrate their achievements because the Europeans want to portray them as light-skinned people”.

Allah – The Exalted- said:

قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ سُنَنٌ فَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ

Many similar mishaps [troubles, problems] of life were faced by nations that have passed away before you, so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved]. [Aal Imraan. 137]

Imam Ibnul Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Indeed, there were nations like yourselves before you, so look to their evil end. You have to know that the reason behind their evil end was due to their disbelief in the revelations of Allah and His Messengers. They were the forefathers and you are the descendants. The main affair that connects you to each other is your disbelief and the ruling on that disbelief is destruction. [I’laam Al-Muwaqqi’een 1/181]

Imam Muhammad Bin Salih Al-Uthaymin, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: If it is said, “What is the benefit in narrating to us the stories of the destroyed nations despite the fact that this Ummah will not be completely destroyed in a manner similar to the destruction of the previous nations before it?”

The Answer: Indeed, this has two benefits: The first benefit is a clarification of Allaah’s blessings upon us that the occurrence of a complete destruction is removed from us, and that were it not for Allaah’s Benevolence we would have been deserving of it. Second, the likeness of the punishment they received may occur in the hereafter for the one who did what they did, if punishment was not received in the worldly life. And this may be understood from the statement of Allaah: “Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the population of towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful and severe. Indeed in that (there) is a sure lesson for those who fear the torment of the Hereafter.” So what is apparent from this Ayah is that what is similar to the punishment they received will happen in the Hereafter, and Allaah knows best. [Al-Muntaqaa Min Fawaa-idil Fawaa-id 123-124]

The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: Indeed, Allah [The Most High] has removed from you the pride of the pre-Islamic period and its boasting about ancestors. One is only a pious believer or a wretched sinner. You are sons of Adam and Adam (was created from) dust. Let the people abandon boasting about their ancestors, for they are merely fuel in Jahannam; or they will become more insignificant in (the sight of) Allah than the beetle which rolls dung with its nose. [Sahih Abu Dawud 5116]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُواْ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُواْ بَلۡ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَنَآ‌ۚ أَوَلَوۡ ڪَانَ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنُ يَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ

And when it is said to them: “Follow that which Allah has sent down”, they say: “Nay, we shall follow that which we found our fathers (following).” (Would they do so) even if Shaitan (Satan) invites them to the torment of the Fire. [Luqman. 21]

Allah [The Exalted] stated:

And every nation has its appointed term; when their term is reached, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment). O Children of Adam! If there come to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting to you, My Verses, then whosoever becomes pious and righteous, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. But those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and treat them with arrogance, they are the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire, they will abide therein forever. Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)? For such their appointed portion (good things of this worldly life and their period of stay therein) will reach them from the Book (of Decrees) until, when Our Messengers (the angel of death and his assistants) come to them to take their souls, they (the angels) will say: “Where are those whom you used to invoke and worship besides Allah,” they will reply, “They have vanished and deserted us.” And they will bear witness against themselves, that they were disbelievers. (Allah) will say: “Enter you in the company of nations who passed away before you, of men and jinns, into the Fire.” Every time a new nation enters, it curses its sister nation (that went before), until they will be gathered all together in the Fire. The last of them will say to the first of them: “Our Lord! These misled us, so give them a double torment of the Fire.” He will say: “For each one there is double (torment), but you know not.” The first of them will say to the last of them: “You were not better than us, so taste the torment for what you used to earn.” [Surah Al-A’raaf. Verses 34-39]

Allah [The Exalted] said:

The parable of those who disbelieve in their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a stormy day, they shall not be able to get aught of what they have earned. That is the straying, far away (from the Right Path). Do you not see that Allah has created the heavens and the earth with truth? If He will, He can remove you and bring (in your place) a new creation! And for Allah that is not hard or difficult (i.e. very easy for Allah). And they all shall appear before Allah (on the Day of Resurrection) then the weak will say to those who were arrogant (chiefs): “Verily, we were following you; can you avail us anything from Allah’s Torment?” They will say: “Had Allah guided us, we would have guided you. It makes no difference to us (now) whether we rage, or bear (these torments) with patience, there is no place of refuge for us.” And Shaitan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: “Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, so you responded to me. So blame me not, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).” And those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah and His Messengers and whatever they brought) and did righteous deeds, will be made to enter Gardens under which rivers flow, – to dwell therein forever (i.e.in Paradise), with the permission of their Lord. Their greeting therein will be: Salam (peace!) . See you not how Allah sets forth a parable? – A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e. very high). Giving its fruit at all times, by the Leave of its Lord and Allah sets forth parables for mankind in order that they may remember. And the parable of an evil word is that of an evil tree uprooted from the surface of earth having no stability. Allah will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm in this world (i.e. they will keep on worshipping Allah Alone and none else), and in the Hereafter. And Allah will cause to go astray those who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.), and Allah does what He wills. [Ibrahim 18-27]

Thus, regardless of whether the Pharoahs were dark skinned or not, or the greatness of their worldly achievements, they are fuel for the fire.

Reflections from some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi al-Mad’khali [15 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Ibn Abbas and Aa’isha, may Allah be pleased with them, stated: When the last moment of the life of Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, approached, he started putting his Khameesah (a woollen blanket) on his face and when he felt hot and short of breath he took it off his face and said, “May Allah curse the Yahud and Nasaaraa because they built the places of worship at the graves of their Prophets”. (The Prophet was warning against what those people had done).

They (i.e. companions) understood that the Messenger was issuing a warning message. Aa’isha and Ibn Abbas said, “He (the Prophet) was cautioning against what those people had done.” Therefore, given that the Yahud and Nasaaraa were cursed and incurred Allah’s intense wrath, (as indicated by the statement), “Allah’s severe wrath is upon a people who take the graves of their Prophets as places of worship,” despite their love for the Prophets and their construction of places of worship on their graves; so, what about those who defile (the purity) of the greatest religion (Islam) through acts of shirk, akin to the actions of the Yahud?! Therefore, it follows that Allah’s curse and intense wrath currently applies to them (those who engage in grave worship) when they adopt the graves of others as places of worship. When it is the case that Allah disapproved of the actions of the Yahud, who revered the Prophets and erected places of worship over their graves, how can this act be accepted from those who build places of worship over the graves of those who (hold a status) inferior to that of the Prophets?!

O brothers! This is a deviation from the meaning of [لا إله إلا الله – There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. Therefore, we appeal to the students of knowledge and the callers to Islam not to betray this Ummah, and not to conceal this clarification and guidance that was revealed by Allah to Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- the explanation of Tawhid, the distinction between Tawhid and Shirk because if we lose this knowledge, all the other sciences will have no value. Quranic and Prophetic Methodology for the Rectification of Society – By Imam Abdul Aziz Bin Baz

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Abdul Azeez Bin Baz, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Society-Muslim and Non-Muslim- is greatly in need of rectification. However, from a certain perspective, the Islamic society is greatly in need of adhering to an upright path by way of which it would be rectified – the path that was followed by the most virtuous human being in the Muslim Ummah, the friend of Allah and the most righteous amongst His slaves, our leader Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. It is well known that the path through which the Islamic and non-Islamic societies will be rectified is the path that was established by Muhammad -the leader of the Messengers and seal of the Prophets.  This path was also established by his noble companions-foremost amongst them were the Rightly Guided Khulafaa: Abu-Bakr As-Siddeeq, Umar, Uthman and Ali, and the other companions of the Messenger, may Allah be pleased with all of them and include us amongst those who follow them in righteousness]. It is well known that this path was established by our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Makkah- first and foremost- and then in Madinah.

“The latter part of this Muslim nation will not be rectified except through that which rectified its early part’’, just as the people of knowledge and sound faith have stated. This is a statement of Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy upon him, – the well-known scholar of sound understanding and piety. Many other people of knowledge reported this statement during and after his era and they all agreed with it- that ‘’The latter part of this Muslim nation will not be rectified except by way of that which rectified its earlier part.” This means that the path followed by its earlier generations -the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His noble Messenger- is what will rectify its future generations until the Day of Judgement. The one who wishes to rectify an Islamic society, or any other society in this worldly life through other than the path and practical steps that rectified those who have preceded [i.e. the Prophet and his companions], then such a person is mistaken and has spoken untruth. There is no path [to rectification] other than the path [of the Messenger and his companions]. The only path of rectification and uprightness is the one that was followed by our Prophet and his noble companions, and then those who follow them exactly in righteousness till this era of ours.  And this necessitates:

-To give close attention to the Great Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger and convey them to the people.

-To acquire understanding of the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah and convey both of them with knowledge and clear-sightedness.

-To clarify the rulings found in the Qur’an and the Sunnah, including – first and foremost – the sound creed and the views that must be accepted by the Islamic society. On the other hand, one should clarify the forbidden creeds and views that are to be avoided.

-To clarify the boundaries of Halal and Haram that have been legislated by Allah and His Messenger, so that they are not violated. Allah [The Mighty and Majestic] said: [تِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَقْرَبُوهَا – These are the limits (set) by Allah, so approach them not] [Al-Baqarah. 187]

These limits are the unlawful deeds forbidden by Allah because they lead to sins. Just as Allah forbade mankind from going beyond the boundaries of Halal and Haram, He also legislated acts of worship and rulings in the religion.

The first obligation and foundation established by the Messenger was the call to Tawheed. This is the first obligation and fundamental he spoke about, proclaimed and followed. He called the people to worship Allah alone and guided them to its details. The statement upon which this obligation is founded is the testimony of faith [لا إله إلا الله- None has the right to be worshipped except Allah]. This is the solid foundation, alongside the testimony [محمدا رسول الله – Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah].  These two important fundamentals and foundations are the basis of Islam and the basis for the rectification of this Ummah.

Therefore, whoever adheres to these two foundations and acts upon them steadfastly with knowledge, calls to them and exercises patience [whilst facing hardships in this path], he will become upright and Allah will rectify the Ummah through him depending on the level of his efforts, strength and the sound legislated means he employs whilst following such a path. And whoever neglects both these fundamentals or one of them, he will be ruined and destroyed.

When Allah sent His Prophet and revealed the Qur’an, the first [Surah] revealed to him was Iqrah and then Muddath’thir; so he started to warn the people against Shirk and called them to Tawheed [pure Islamic Monotheism]. He warned them, saying: “O people! Testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and you will be successful [i.e. testify with your tongues, sincerely believe in your heart and carry out acts of worship sincerely for Allah alone and keep away from every other deity worshipped or invoked besides Allah]. However, the polytheists were haughty and rejected his advice because they were not prepared to accept it. It was something they never heard from their predecessors [i.e. forefathers] and thus they turned away. Allah [The Most High] informed us in the Qur’an that they responded to the Prophet, saying:

أَجَعَلَ ٱلۡأَلِهَةَ إِلَـٰهً۬ا وَٲحِدًا‌ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىۡءٌ عُجَابٌ۬

Has he made the aliha (gods) (all) into One Ilah (God – Allah). Verily, this is a curious thing!]

And Allah [The Most High] also informed us that they said:

وَيَقُولُونَ أَٮِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓاْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ۬ مَّجۡنُونِۭ

And (they) said: “Are we going to abandon our aliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?]

They responded in such a manner because they were told to testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, just as Allah said:

[ إِنَّہُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ –

Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah “(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it)]; therefore, Allah replied to them (saying):

[ بَلۡ جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ-

Nay! he (Muhammad) has come with the truth (i.e. Allah’s Religion – Islamic Monotheism and this Qur’an) and he confirms the Messengers (before him who brought Allah’s religion – Islamic Monotheism)].

Due to the negligent attitude of some of the people of knowledge- the students of knowledge and individuals amongst the people of Islam- towards the call to Tawheed, Shirk [i.e. polytheistic beliefs, acts of worship, views, opinions] spread in many lands, and thus the graves and its inhabitants [i.e. the dead in the graves] are invoked besides Allah.

Acts of worship that should be carried out only for sake of Allah are instead carried out for the graves and their inhabitants. [You find] some people invoking the inhabitant of a grave and others beseeching him for help; some make vows to him and others seek assistance from him just as the Quraish pagans and other than them used to do during Al-Jaahiliyyah [i.e. during the period of pre-Islamic Ignorance], because they used to invoke Al-Uzza, Al-laat, Manaat and other idols; and likewise the polytheists-in every era-invoke their idols and those images they worship besides Allah. They exalt them; invoke, seek assistance and blessings from them. This practice is a plot of shaytaan because what he eagerly wants to achieve is to distance people from the sound Islamic creed through every means.

Therefore, it is obligated on the students of knowledge to call to pure Islamic Monotheism, with wisdom, sincerity and truthfulness. They have to give concern to this foundation and should know that the only thing which must be firmly established through which other [praiseworthy achievements] will be established, is the call to Tawheed- sincerely worshipping Allah alone and having a firm belief that Muhammad is truly the Messenger of Allah, and that it is obligatory to follow his path. in Baz continued….. It is obligated on a student of knowledge or a leader to venerate the commandments and prohibitions [legislated by] Allah. He should cultivate the fear of Allah in his heart above everything else. He should not be worried about the rumours being spread by the rumour-mongers to oppose the truth and its people. He should rely upon Allah and affirm that which Allah has promised His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and all the Messengers, just as Allah [The Most High] said:

And those who disbelieved said to their Messengers: “Surely, we shall drive you out of our land, or you shall return to our religion.” So their Lord inspired them: “Truly, We shall destroy the [wrong-doers]. And indeed, We shall make you dwell in the land after them. This is for him who fears standing before Me [on the Day of Resurrection or fears My Punishment] and also fears My Threat.”

The student of knowledge – the scholar, the one who gives clear guidance, the leader with insight- should neither worry about the rumours of the grave worshippers nor that of the deluded ones, nor [the rumours] of the one who has enmity towards Islam, regardless who such rumour-monger or enemy is affiliated with; rather he [i.e. the scholar, student of knowledge etc] should carry on in the arena of struggle – exercising patience; attaching his heart to Allah; fearing Allah and hoping for assistance from Allah [The Most High]. That is because Allah is the true Helper and Protector, and He has promised to give help to the one who aids the religion of Islam. Allah [The Most High] said:

[يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِن تَنصُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ يَنصُرۡكُمۡ وَيُثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَكُمۡ  –

O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm.”

Allah [The Most High] said: [وَكَانَ حَقًّا عَلَيۡنَا نَصۡرُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ-And (as for) the believers it was incumbent upon Us to help (them)]. However, this [victory and help] has conditions and they are: One should firmly adhere to the Religion of Allah and being steadfast, and firmly believe in Allah and His Messengers. This is the path and prerequisite that will bring about Allah’s Help, just as Allah [The Most High] said:

Verily, Allah will help those who help His (Cause). Truly, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty. Those (Muslim rulers) who, if We give them power in the land, (they) order for Iqamat-as-Salat. [i.e. to perform the five compulsory congregational Salat (prayers) (the males in mosques)], to pay the Zakat and they enjoin Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism and all that Islam has forbidden).

In another Ayah Allah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:

Allah has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practice their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islam). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me.

This promise of Allah is for those who are steadfast upon Iman, guidance and righteous deeds. Indeed Allah will certainly grant them succession in the earth and the authority to practice their religion. Allah will give them a safe security and protect them from the evil and plots of their enemies, and grant them victory.

With regards to fulfilment of the second part of the Shahadah [Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah], this necessitates that his Sunnah is venerated, propagated and implemented, and that which is in opposition to it has to be warned against. And that which a person cannot clearly understand in the Noble Qur’an is to be explained by way of the Sunnah, because the Sunnah explains and clarifies what the Qur’an indicates, just as Allah [The Most High]:

وَأَنزَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَ ٱلذِّڪۡرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيۡہِمۡ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ –

We have also sent down unto you (O Muhammad) the reminder and the advice (the Qur’an), that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought.

It is obligatory that this great foundation is made the starting point for the sincere callers and righteous people in the earth-those who want to rectify the affairs of society and direct it towards a path of safety- so that this rectification is firmly grounded upon the greatest basis of rectification, which is: sincerity in worship [i.e. worship Allah alone and associate none as a partner to Him in worship]; belief in Allah’s Messenger, exalting his commands and prohibitions, follow his Shariah and warn against what is in opposition to it.

The companions of the Prophet are the most virtuous in this Ummah. It is obligated on us to have a good suspicion of them and to believe that they are all trustworthy, and that they are the best in this Ummah after the Messenger of Allah. It (is obligatory to believe that) they were the carriers of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and that their methodology has to be followed. It [is obligatory] to declare that Allah was pleased with them and that they are the best of all people after the prophets, just as it has been reported in Al-Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of Ibn Mas’ud that the Prophet said: ‘’The best of the people are those living in my generation; then those who will follow them, and then those who will follow the latter.” They are on different levels in virtue – the most virtuous of them are the rightly guided khulafaa; then the ten who were guaranteed paradise, and then the remaining companions in their various levels of virtuousness and knowledge. Thereafter [i.e. after beginning with the call to Tawheed and obedience to the Messenger], the caller to rectification should look at the other affairs that are connected to this foundation, such as the fulfilment of the obligatory duties – the obligatory prayers, the Zakat, the Hajj and other than them.

He (the student of knowledge) should forbid what Allah has forbidden, such as shirk, and other sins that are lesser than shirk. He should be eager to bring about rectification to the people by enjoining good and forbidding evil and calls to reconciliation and good relationship between the people. He should forbid people from transgressing the boundaries of halal and haram and warn against Bidah. This is how a successful rectifier should be. He pursues the means, whilst guarding the strong foundation which is that “None has the right to be worshiped except Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” in knowledge and Action.  He should teach the people and act upon what he teaches, single Allah out in worship and submit to Allah’s Shariah through the [path of] the Messenger. He should accept the Sunnah and venerate it, just as the Sahabah did. He should follow the path of the Sunnah and that which it necessitates, [whilst following] the Book of Allah, just as the Sahabah did.

Indeed, the knowledge of the Sahabah was derived from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger. They pondered upon the Book of Allah, read it with a righteous intention and with the intention of acquiring knowledge and benefit, and to act. They studied the Sunnah, memorized it, took knowledge from it and acted. This is how the Sahabah, the Messenger and Tabi’in acted before the existence of written works in hadeeth and other than it. Therefore, judge yourself based on the way of these people.

Seek knowledge from the Book of your Lord and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and from the statements of the [trustworthy, righteous and rightly guided] scholars in order to understand the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger. Be eager for knowledge and understanding of the religion until you are able to direct the society towards a straight and safe path, and until you know how to act. Begin with yourself and strive to rectify your path to righteousness and be foremost in every good [deed]. Be with those people who are foremost in [performing] the prayer and every other good deed, and be distant from every evil.  Adhere to the Book and the Sunnah in your actions and statements, and when dealing with your colleagues, brothers and assistants.  This is how a believer should be because this was how the Sahabah acted. Also, this is how the Tabi’un, the Atba At-Tabi’in and the righteous people acted. The Imams of guidance studied the book of Allah and acted upon that which is found in it. They read it to the people, acquainted them with it and guided them to its meanings. They acquainted them with the Sunnah, urged them to follow it and to acquire understanding from it. They commanded the people to venerate the commandments and prohibitions legislated by Allah, and they commanded them -throughout their lives- not to transgress the boundaries of halal and haram.

Every means to rectification requires sincerity and truthfulness, therefore the call to Tawheed requires sincerity and truthfulness. Laa ilaaha illal laah means that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allah’, therefore it is obligatory to be careful of all types of shirk-big and small- and to warn the people against it, just as the Messenger and the Sahaabah did.

After the belief that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah and that it is obligatory to follow him, and that Allah sent him to everyone -Arabs, Non-Arabs, Humans, Jinns, Male and Female- and that it is obligated on all the people of the earth to follow him, the Sunnah will become manifest when venerated and propagated. Allah [The Most High]:

Say (O Muhammad): “O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah – to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He); It is He Who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad) who believes in Allah and His Words [(this Qur’an), the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and also Allah’s Word: “Be!” -and he was, i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary)] and follow him so that you may be guided.” [Surah Al-A’raaf Ayah 158]

And before the above Ayah, Allaah [The Most High] said:

[فَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ بِهِۦ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَٱتَّبَعُواْ ٱلنُّورَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ مَعَهُ ۥۤ‌ۙ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ

– So those who believe in him (Muhammad), honour him, help him, and follow the light (the Qur’an) which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful] [Al-A’raf. 157]

Therefore, whoever follows the Messenger and exalts his commands and prohibitions, then indeed he will be successful. And whoever opposes him- by following desires and shaytaan- will be a loser and will be destroyed.

The means to rectification are many depending on what the caller is commanding and forbidding. Therefore, call the people to the religion of Allah- to fulfil the obligatory duties legislated by Allah and abandon what Allah has forbidden based on the path that was followed by Allah’s Messenger.

If you live in a society that wages war against the religion and there is no Muslim ruler to help, you should act just as Allah’s Messenger acted in Makkah by calling to the religion of Allah with good speech, good etiquettes and lenient words, so that what you say will enter the hearts-urging the hearts towards obedience to Allah and His Religion of Islamic Monotheism. You should cooperate with your brothers and those who adhere to your path [i.e. the call to Tawheed, the authentic Sunnah and understanding of the pious predecessors], whilst calling the people and being gentle until Iman becomes firmly settled in the hearts and established amongst the people with clear proofs.

If you live in an Islamic society where a Muslim ruler is present to give you a helping hand, then you can be far more active in enjoining good, forbidding evil and contacting those in charge of authority when the obstinate ones are present- those whose obstinacy poses a danger to society. You should do this, whilst following an upright path and employing leniency, wisdom and patience, just as Allah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:

وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ

إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسۡرٍ

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ

بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ

By Al-‘Asr (the time). Verily! Man is in loss; Except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth (i.e. order one another to perform all kinds of good deeds (Al-Ma’ruf)which Allah has ordained, and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds (Al-Munkar)which Allah has forbidden), and recommend one another to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allah’s Cause during preaching His religion of Islamic Monotheism or Jihad, etc.)

There has to be patience and calling one another to the truth until your mission becomes success. Also, the people with positions of responsibility in the society and those leaders about whom it is feared that their evil will harm the Dawah, the caller to rectification should advise them whilst employing good etiquettes through written correspondence and speech just as Allah [The Most High] said:

[فَبِمَا رَحۡمَةٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمۡ‌ۖ وَلَوۡ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ ٱلۡقَلۡبِ لَٱنفَضُّواْ مِنۡ حَوۡلِكَ‌ۖ –

And by the Mercy of Allah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you]. [3:159]

And just as Allah [The Most High] said to Musa and Harun, peace be upon them, when He sent them to Pharaoh: [فَقُولَا لَهُ ۥ قَوۡلاً۬ لَّيِّنً۬ا لَّعَلَّهُ ۥ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوۡ يَخۡشَىٰ -And speak to him mildly, perhaps he may accept admonition or fear Allah] [20:44] Therefore, it is obligated on those seeking to rectify the affairs and the callers to Islam to follow this path, and that they solve the problems of the society with wisdom and fine admonition-addressing every person with what he deserves, so that they can be successful in their mission and reach their goals.

Allah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfection] stated:

وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ

إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسۡرٍ

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ

بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ

By Al-’Asr (the time). Verily! Man is in loss; except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth (i.e. order one another to perform all kinds of good deeds (Al-Ma’ruf)which Allah has ordained, and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds (Al-Munkar)which Allah has forbidden), and recommend one another to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allah’s Cause during preaching His religion of Islamic Monotheism or Jihad, etc.)”

Likewise, this [i.e. exercising patience] is the way of the noble Messengers, just as Allah [The Most High] said to His Messenger Muhammad in the last part of Surah Al-Ahqaf, and it is a Surah that was revealed in Makkah:

[فَٱصۡبِرۡ كَمَا صَبَرَ أُوْلُواْ ٱلۡعَزۡمِ مِنَ ٱلرُّسُلِ وَلَا تَسۡتَعۡجِل لَّهُمۡ‌ۚ

– Therefore be patient (O Muhammad) as did the Messengers of strong will and be in no haste about them (disbelievers)].

Allah [The Most High] said in Surah Aal Imran and it is a Surah that was revealed in Madinah:

You shall certainly be tried and tested in your wealth and properties and in your personal selves, and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the Scripture before you (Jews and Christians) and from those who ascribe partners to Allah, but if you persevere patiently, and become Al-Muttaqun then verily, that will be a determining factor in all affairs, and that is from the great matters, [which you must hold on with all your efforts].

Allah [The Most High] said in the last part of Surah Al-Nahl and it is also a Surah that was revealed in Makkah:

وَٱصۡبِرۡ وَمَا صَبۡرُكَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ‌ۚ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا تَكُ فِى ضَيۡقٍ۬ مِّمَّا يَمۡڪُرُونَ

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَواْ وَّٱلَّذِينَ هُم مُّحۡسِنُونَ

And endure you patiently (O Muhammad); your patience is not but from Allah. And grieve not over them (polytheists and pagans, etc.), and be not distressed because of what they plot. Truly, Allah is with those who fear Him (keep their duty unto Him), and those who are Muhsinun (good-doers)

The verses of the Qur’an that conveys this are many indeed. Everyone who followed the path of the Messengers amongst the callers to Allah and the righteous rectifiers was successful in his call – successful with a praiseworthy end and was given victory over the enemies. Whoever examines and studies the narrations transmitted about the righteous rectifiers and their life stories will come to know of this and will be certain about it.

I ask Allah by His Beautiful (Perfect) Names and (Perfect) Lofty Attributes that He rectifies the state of affairs of the Muslims. And that He grants them understanding in the religion, grants their leaders every good and rectifies their advisers, consultants, helpers etc. And that He protects all the Muslims in every place from the affairs of misguidance that occur as a result of trials, and protects them from following desires and shaytaan. Indeed Allah alone is the Guardian over all this and the one able to grant it. [1] [End of quote]

[1] An Excerpt from “Awaamil Islaah Al-Mujtama’ah” pages 1-27]

Notes from translation of Usul Thalatha by Shaikh Abu Talhah Dawud Burbank- may Allah have mercy upon him and his wife, on Du’a and other acts of worship.

Invocation, vows, offering sacrifices etc are acts of worship and can only be carried out for Allah alone, and not for graves, tombs, shrines and their dead inhabitants. See details below from Usool ath-thalaatha by Shaikh Uthaymeen, translated by Ustaadh Dawud Burbank [may Allaah have mercy upon him and his wife]… Ad-Du’aa: Invocation: “Your Lord says: O people, invoke Me and supplicate to Me making your worship sincerely for Me alone, and I will answer you, and pardon you and have mercy upon you. Indeed those who disdain to worship Me alone will enter Hell-Fire in disgrace’ [69] [Soorah Ghaafir (40):60].  So the noble Aayah proves that invocation/supplication (du’aa) is worship, and if that were not the case it would not be said “those who disdain to worship Me alone….” So whoever called upon anyone besides Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, requesting something which none but Allaah has power over, then he is a mushrik (one who worships others besides Allaah), an unbeliever (kaafir), whether the one he calls upon is living or dead. Whoever requests a living person for something which he is able to do, such as the saying: ‘O so and so give me food’ or ‘O so and so give me a drink,’ then there is no harm in that. But whoever asks a dead person or someone who is absent for that, then he is a mushrik, since the deceased or the absent cannot possibly do that. So in such a case his supplicating to them shows that he believes that they have some control over the creation, and he is therefore a mushrik. It must be noted that du’aa is of two types: (i) Supplication, when a request is made (du ‘aa-u mas’alah) and, (ii) invocation through worship (du’aa-u Ibaadah). So supplication is to request ones needs and is worship when the servant requests that from his Lord.

This is because it involves showing one’s poverty before Allah, the Most High, and ones need to turn to Him, and one’s certain faith that He is the one having full power, the Most Generous, the one who gives bounteously and is Most Merciful. Seeking ones needs from someone else from the creation is permissible if the one to whom the request is made is able to hear and understand it, and has the power to respond to it, like the saying: ‘O so and so give me food.’ As for invocation through worship, then it is that the person does an act of worship seeking reward and fearing punishment, and this is not correct unless directed to Allah alone. To direct this to anyone else besides Allah is major shirk which takes a person out of the Religion, and he falls under the threat in the Saying of Allah, the Most High, “Your Lord says: O people, invoke Me and supplicate to Me making your worship sincerely for Me alone, and I will answer you, and pardon you and have mercy upon you. Indeed those who disdain to worship Me alone will enter Hell-Fire in disgrace.” [Ghaafir (40):60]

Al- Isti’aanah-Appealing for aid and assistance: The evidence for this act of worship is the verse of the Qur’aan:  “O Allaah You alone we worship, and to You alone we appeal for aid” [Soorah al-Faatihah (1):5] and in the hadeeth there occurs: “If you seek help, then seek the help of Allaah.” [79] [Reported by at-Tirmidhee and declared Saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaanee in al-Mishkaat (no.5302)]

Al-isti’aanah is to appeal for assistance, and it is of various types: (i) Appealing for aid and assistance from Allaah – this is an appeal for aid and assistance that comprises complete humility of the servant before his Lord, and to submit and entrust the affair to Him, and to be certain that He is fully sufficient for him. This is not to be except for Allaah, the Most High, alone, and the evidence is the Saying of Allaah, the Most High, “O Allaah You alone we worship, and to You alone we appeal for aid.” [Soorah al-Faatihah (1):5] The fact that this is to be for Allaah, the Most High, alone is shown by the fact that He mentions the word upon which the verb acts before the verb itself, and according to the principles of grammar of the Arabic language, in which the Qur’aan came down, bringing forward that which usually comes afterwards indicates restriction and particularisation. So directing this type to other than Allaah, the Most High, is shirk which takes a person out of the Religion. (ii) Seeking the help of a person from the creation, in something which he is capable of helping in. Then this will be in accordance with the action in which help is sought. If it is a good action then it is permissible for the person to seek help upon it, and prescribed for a person to help in that, as Allaah, the Most High, says, “And assist one another upon righteous actions and avoidance of sins.” [Soorah alMaa’idah (5):2]

If it is a sinful thing, then it is forbidden for the person doing it and for the one who assists, as Allaah, the Most High, says, “And do not assist one another in abandoning what Allaah has commanded and upon transgressing the limits laid down in the Religion.” [Soorah al-Maa’idah (5):2] If it is something permissible, then it is allowed for the person to seek help and to be assisted, and the one who is helping may be rewarded for kind treatment and thus it becomes something prescribed for him as Allaah, the Most High says, “And do good, indeed Allaah loves those who do good.” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 195] (iii) Seeking the help of a person from the creation who is alive and present, except that it is something which he is incapable of, then this is futile and useless. For example that he seeks the help of a weak person in order to carry something very heavy. (iv) Seeking the aid of any deceased person, or the aid of the living in a matter of the hidden and unseen, which they cannot reach. Then this is shirk since it will only be done by a person who believes that those whose help he seeks have some hidden control over the creation. (v) Seeking help by performing deeds that are beloved to Allaah, the Most High. This is something that is prescribed due to the Saying of Allaah, the Most High, “And seek assistance through patience and Prayer.” [Soorah al-Baqarah (2):45] The author, rahimahullaah, uses as evidence for the first type the Saying of Allaah, the Most High, “O Allaah You alone we worship, and to You alone we appeal for aid.” [Soorah al-Faatihah (1):5] And the saying of the Prophet saying: “If you seek help then seek the help of Allaah” The evidence for seeking refuge (al-isti’aadhah) is the Saying of Allaah, the Most High: “Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the dawn” [Soorah al-Falaq (113):1] and: “Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind” [80] [Soorah an-Naas (114):1].

Al-Isti’aadhah-To seek refuge; which is to seek protection against that which one hates and involves seeking refuge and shelter and protection from someone, and is of various types: (i) Seeking the refuge of Allaah, the Most High, and this involves ones complete need of Him, attachment to Him, and one’s certain faith in His being sufficient and His perfect protection from everything, whether in the present or the future, small or large, human or not, and the proof is the Sayings of Allaah, the Most High, “Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the dawn, from the evil of that which He created…” [Soorahal-Falaq (113): l-2] “Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind; the king of mankind; the one who is worshipped rightfully by mankind; from the evil of Satan who whispers into the hearts of mankind and then withdraws when they remember Allaah…” [Soorah an-Naas (114): 1-4] (ii) Seeking refuge in one of Allaah’s attributes, such as His Speech, His Greatness, His Might, and so on.

The evidence for this are his sayings: The Prophet said, “I seek refuge in the perfect Words of Allaah from the evil of that which He created” [Reported by Muslim (Eng. transl. 4/ 142l/no.654l)]. He said, “I seek refuge in Your Might that I should not be assailed from below” [Reported by Aboo Daawood (Eng. transl. 3/1408/no. 5056) and declared Saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaanee in Saheeh Sunan Abee Dawood (no. 4239)]. Also his saying in the supplication recited when suffering from pain, “I seek refuge in the Might and Power of Allaah from the evil of what I feel and am wary of.” [Reported by Muslim (Eng. transl. 3/1198/no. 5462) and Ibn Maajah (no. 3522)]. The Prophet said, “I seek refuge in Your Pleasure from Your Wrath” [Reported by Muslim (Eng. transl. l/255/no.986)]. His saying, when Allaah, the Most High, sent down His Saying: “Say He is the One fully able to send punishment upon you from above.” [Soorah al-An’aam (6):65] He said: “I seek refuge in Your Face.” [Collected by al-Bukhaaree (Eng. transl. 9/370/503)]. (iii) Seeking refuge either with the dead, or with living people who are not present and able to grant refuge, then this is shirk. In this regard Allaah, the Most High, says, “And there were men from mankind who used to seek refuge with men of the jinn, and so that only increased them in transgression.” [Soorah al-Jinn (72):6] Seeking shelter with some person or in some place, or the like, as long as it is something which can serve the purpose of providing shelter. Then this is permissible and the evidence is his saying, speaking about tribulations, “Whoever exposes himself to them will be destroyed by them, and whoever finds a place of shelter or refuge from them, then let him take shelter in it” [Reported by alBukhaaree (Eng. transl. vol. 9/p. 158/no.203) and Muslim (Eng. transl. 4/1495/no.6893)]. He also explained this place of shelter or refuge in his saying, “So whoever has camels should stick to his camels…“ [Reported by Muslim (Eng. transl. 4/1495-1496/no.6896)]. There also occurs in Saheeh Muslim (Eng. transl. 3/91 I/no.4190) from Jaabir, radiyallaahu ‘anhu, that a woman from the tribe of Banoo Makhzoom stole something, so then she was brought to the Prophet and she sought refuge with Umm Salamah. He also reports in his Saheeh (Eng. transl. 4/ 1494/no.6996) from Umm Salamah, radiyallaahu ‘anhaa, from the Prophet that he said: “A man will seek refuge in the House and an army detachment will be sent against him…” However if it is the case that someone is seeking refuge from the evil of an oppressor, then it is obligatory to shelter him and grant him refuge as far as is possible. But if he seeks refuge in order to help him to commit something forbidden, or to flee away from an obligation, then it is forbidden to shelter him.

Al-istighaathah -To seek rescue and deliverance from severe difficulty and destruction, and is of various types: (i) Seeking deliverance and rescue from Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, is one of the most excellent and most perfect deeds, and it was the continual practice of the messengers and their followers. The evidence for it is what the Shaykh, rahimahullaah, mentioned, “When you sought aid and deliverance of your Lord and He responded to you that He was sending you a thousand angels in succession to assist you.” [Soorah al-Anfaal (8):9]

This occurred at the battle of Badr when the Prophet saw the polytheists numbering a thousand men, whist his companions were a few more than three hundred and ten. So he entered the palm grove calling earnestly upon his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, raising up his hands and facing the qiblah, and saying: “O Allaah fulfil that which You have promised me. O Allaah if this small group who are the people of lslaam are destroyed you will not be worshipped upon the earth.” Then he continued calling upon his Lord earnestly, with his hands raised such that his cloak fell from his shoulders. So Aboo Bakr, radiyallaahu ‘anhu, took up his cloak and cast it back upon his shoulders and embraced him from behind and said: “O Prophet of Allaah, your earnest supplication to your Lord will be sufficient for you since he will fulfil what He has promised you,” so this Aayah was sent down. [Reported by Muslim (Eng. transl. 3/960/no.4360)] (ii) Seeking rescue and deliverance, either from the dead or from those who are living but are not present and able to give aid and rescue, then this is shirk. This is so because it will not be done except by one who believes that those people have some unseen control over the creation, and they have therefore attributed to them a share of the Lordship that is for Allaah, the Most High, alone. Allaah, the Most High, says, “Or is that which you falsely worship along with Allaah better than He Who responds to the one in distress when he calls Him; who removes the harm; and who makes you to succeed those who came before you?! Is there anything that is worshipped besides Allaah that can do these things for you?! Little do you consider the greatness of Allaah and His favours upon you, and the clear proofs He has given you, so you therefore associate others in worship with Him.” [Soorah an-Naml (27):62] (iii) Seeking aid and rescue from those who are alive, aware of the situation and capable of assistance and rescue. It is permissible to seek aid and rescue from them: Allaah, the Most High, says in the story of Moosaa: “So the man who was upon the same Religion as Moosaa sought the aid of Moosaa against his enemy the copt, so Moosaa struck him forcefully and killed him.” [Soorah al-Qasas (28):15] (iv) Seeking rescue and aid from a living person who is not capable of assisting him, without believing that he has some hidden power. For example that a drowning person calls for rescue from a person who is paralysed. This is futility and is a mockery of the one whom he seeks rescue from, and is therefore prohibited for this reason. A further reason for its prohibition is that anyone who saw him seeking rescue from the paralysed man may be deceived into thinking that the paralysed man must have some hidden power enabling him to rescue people

Adh-dhabh- Sacrifice: The evidence is the ayah of the Qur’aan: “Say, O Muhammad, indeed my Prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are all purely and solely for Allaah, Lord of all creation. There is no share of any of that for other than him.” [82] [Soorah al-An’aam (6): 162-3]. Also the Prophet said: “Allaah has cursed anyone who sacrifices for other than Allaah” [Reported by Muslim (Eng. transl. 3/ 1093- 1094/no.4876)]82 Sacrifice is to kill by spilling the blood of the animal in a particular manner, and is done for a number of reasons:

That it is done as an act of worship, such that he intends by it veneration of the one for whom he sacrifices, and intends it as an act of submission to him and a means of nearness to him. So this may not be done except for Allaah, the Most High, and has to be done in the manner which Allaah, the Most High, has prescribed. Directing it to other than Allaah is major shirk and the evidence (as mentioned by the author) is the Saying of Allaah, the Most High, “Say, O Muhammad, indeed my Prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are all purely and solely for Allaah, Lord of all creation. There is no share of any of that for other than Him’ [Soorah al-An’aam (6):162-3] (ii) That it is done out of hospitality for the guest, or for as wedding feast (waleemah) or the like, then this is something commanded, either as an obligation or a recommendation, as he said “Whoever truly believes in Allaah and the Last Day, then let him treat the guest honourably” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (Eng. transl. 8/99/no. 156) and Muslim (Eng. transl. 3/935/no. 4286)]. He said to ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn ‘Auf, “Give a wedding, feast (waleemah) even if it is only with a single sheep” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (Eng. transl. 7/72/no.96)]. (iii) That it is done to provide food charitably, or to sell the meat and so on, then this falls under that which is permissible and is in principle according to the Saying of Allaah, the Most High, “Do those mushriks who worship others along with Allaah not see that We have created for them, from what our Hands have created, cattle which they are in charge of, and We have made the cattle subservient to them: so from them are those which they eat the meat of.” [Soorah Yaa Seen (36):71-2] Furthermore, it may be something desirable or prohibited depending upon what it leads to.

An-nadhr- Vows: The evidence is the ayah: “They fulfil their vows and they fear a day whose evil is widespread” [84] [Soorah al-Insaan (76):7]. The Aayah is a proof since Allaah praises them for fulfilling their vows, which shows that Allaah loves that and every action that is beloved to Allaah is worship. This is further supported by the Saying of Allaah, the Most High, “…they fear a day whose evil is widespread.” [Soorah al-Insaan (76):7] The fulfilling of vows which Allaah, the Most High, has praised are all acts of worship which Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, has obligated. This is because when a person starts any of the obligatory acts of worship, then he has become duty bound to fulfil and complete them. The proof for this is the Saying of Allaah, the Most High, “Then let them complete the duties of their hajj, and fulfil their vows (e.g. the sacrifice), and let them perform the tawaaf of ifaadah around the ancient House.” [Soorah al-Hajj (22):29] Vows by which a person makes a pledge and thus obligates himself to do something or other, or makes some act of obedience to Allaah, that is not obligatory, binding upon himself, then this is disliked, and some of the scholars declared it to be forbidden. This is because the Prophet (0) forbade making vows and said, “It does not bring good, it merely causes the miserly person to spend” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (Eng. transl. 8/448/no.684) and Muslim (Eng. transl. 3/871/no.4019)]. Yet even so, if a person does go ahead and vow that he will do some act of obedience to Allaah, then it becomes obligatory upon him to perform it as the Prophet (3) said, “Whoever vows to act in obedience to Allaah, then let him obey Him” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (Eng. transl. 8/449/no.687)]. So in summary vows {an-nadhr) applies to the obligatory acts of worship in general, and to making vows in specific, which is that a person obliges himself to do something for the sake of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. The scholars divide the vow into various categories and these are laid out in the books of fiqh (details of Islamic law and regulations). [Source: Explanation of the Three fundamental principles. Translated by Abu Talhah Dawud Burbank (may Allaah have mercy upon him and his wife)]

NB: Whoever directs the above acts of worship to others besides Allaah, then indeed he or she has committed major shirk [major polytheism] which expels a person from the fold of Islam but this is a general ruling. However, in order to declare a specific Muslim individual as one who has left the fold of Islaam due to him or her committing acts of major polytheism, this ruling cannot be given, except by a scholar. Question to Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (Rahimahullaah)]:

Is enjoining Ma’ruf and forbidding Munkar, namely correcting the wrong by the hand, a right for all Muslims or is it just confined to those in authority and their deputies?

Correcting the is obligated on all Muslims according to their ability, because the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] said, “Anyone of you who sees evil, let him stop it with his hand (by taking action); if not able, then with his tongue (by speaking out); and if not able, then with his heart (by hating it and feeling that it is wrong), and that is the weakest of Eemaan.”[Reported by Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi & others]

However, changing by the hand must be based on ability and not result in greater corruption or evil. A man has the right to rectify matters with his hand (by taking action) in his home; and a manager has the authority to make changes with the hand within the organization he is responsible for- in accordance with the instructions that were given to them. Otherwise, people should not stop the evil -with their hand- they are not authorized to stop. If they do make stop an evil they have no authority to stop, this will result in more evil and great corruption between them and the people, and between the people and the state.

In this case they should stop the evil with their tongue (by speaking out). They may say: “O so-and-so! Fear Allah! That is not permissible,” “This is Haram (prohibited),” or: “That is Wajib (obligatory) on you,” and clarify it with a legislated Islamic proof. This is what can be done by the tongue. As for changing matters with the hand, this should be done where one has authority, such as one’s home, with those under one’s responsibility, or those authorized by the ruler, such as organizations given permission and authority to enjoin good. They should make changes in accordance with the authority they have been given- in the way prescribed by the Shari’ah (Islamic law), without exceeding their jurisdiction. The same applies to the governor of a city; he should make changes with his hand, in accordance with the instructions he has. [Fataawaa Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz 8/208] [NB: In the Western Europe and some other countries, disapproving of certain acts would be considered harassment or discrimination, therefore, one should know what the law allows him, otherwise he or she will either be cautioned by the authorities and charged]

The Impact of Worship In The Life of a Muslim

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Impact_of_Worship_In_The_Life_of_a_Muslim

Al-Allamah Abdul Muhsin Al-Abbad [may Allah preserve him] stated:

Al-Ibadah – worship – is a comprehensive term encompassing everything beloved and pleasing to Allah, both actions and statements, whether visible or hidden. This is the best (definition) of worship. Worship is a great matter because Allah created the creation, sent Messengers, and revealed the Books to instruct them to worship Him alone and prohibit them from worshipping others besides Him. Allah says:

And I (Allah) created not the Jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).

Allah created them to command them to worship Him alone and to forbid them from disobeying Him. Allah [Glorified be He] says:

وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِى ڪُلِّ أُمَّةٍ۬ رَّسُولاً أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ‌ۖ

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship   Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah). [An-Nahl. 36]

Allah says:

And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah), so worship Me (Alone and none else)]. [Al-Anbiya. 25]

There are numerous types of acts of worship, including Al-Khawf (fear), Ar-Rajaa (hope), At-Tawakkul (trust and reliance), Ar-Raghbah (fervent desire), Ar-Rahbah (dread), Al-Inabah (turning repentantly to Allah), Al-Isti’anah (appealing for aid and assistance), Al-Istighatha (seeking deliverance and rescue), Adh-Dhabh (sacrificing), An-Nadr (vow), and other forms of worship. Among the acts of worship are the five pillars of Islam, which have all been mentioned in the renowned hadith of Jibreel when Jibreel inquired about Islam from the Prophet, who then responded: “It is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger, and that you perform the prayer, pay the Zakah, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House (i.e. the Ka’bah at Makkah) if you can find a way to it”. [Sahih Muslim. Kitab Al-Iman. Number 8]

It has also been transmitted in the hadith narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar that the Messenger said: “Islam has been built on five (pillars): to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is Allah’s Messenger, establish the prayer, pay the zakat (obligatory charity), perform the hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, and fasting in Ramadhan”. [Sahih al-Bukhari. Kitaab Al-Iman. Hadith 8] [Sahih Muslim Hadith 19]

Moreover, for an act of worship to be accepted, it is essential to meet two requirements. Firstly, the act of worship must be performed with utmost sincerity solely for the sake of Allah. Secondly, it must align with the Messenger’s Sunnah. It is crucial to worship Allah sincerely, without associating any partners with Him, and to adhere to the guidance brought by the Messenger. This is what the Shahadah That is because (لا إله إلا الله) demands that acts of worship must be done sincerely for the sake of Allah alone; (محمدا رسول الله) demands that acts of worship be in accordance with what was revealed to the noble Messenger. Therefore, Allah should not be worshipped with bidah, newly invented matters in Religion, or evil acts; rather, worship must be based on the Sunnah of the noble Messenger. If either of these two conditions, or both, are not met, then the act of worship will be rejected by Allah. Allah says:

And We shall turn to whatever deeds they disbelievers, polytheists] did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust. [Al-Furqan. 23]

The noble Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said:
مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌ

He who innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that is not of it will have it rejected. [Sahih Al-Bukhaari. Number 2697] [Sahih Muslim. Number 1718]

In another wording of this hadith, the Prophet said:
مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَهُوَ رَد

He who does an act (of worship) that we have not commanded (i.e. not commanded by the Prophet), will have it rejected.

He said:

Verily he lives long among you will see a lot of differing, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Khulafaa ar-Rashideen [the rightly guided caliphs]. Adhere to it with your molar teeth (i.e. adhere to it firmly). And beware of newly invented matters [in the religion], for every newly invented matter [in the religion] is a bidah [innovation in the religion], and every bidah is misguidance. [Abu Dawood. Number 4607] [Tirmidhee. Number 2676]

In the hadith about the seventy-three sects, (a) the Messenger explained that out of the seventy-three sects, seventy-two will go to hell and only one will be saved. The saved sect is the one that follows the path of the Messenger and his noble companions. Imaam Malik said: “The latter part of this Ummah will not be rectified except by way of that which rectified its earlier part”. He said: “Whoever initiates a bidah in Islam and considers it to be something good, indeed he has claimed that Muhammad betrayed the Risaalah (i.e. the message he was entrusted with). That is because Allah says: ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ – This day, I have perfected your religion for you]. Therefore, what was not part of the religion at that time cannot be part of the religion today”. [Al-Itisaam of Imaam Shaatibee 1/28]

It is insufficient for someone to say, “I will perform this act of worship even though the Prophet did not do it because my intention is pure and good.” The proof against this statement is when the Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] learned that one of his noble companions had slaughtered the Eid sacrifice before the Eid prayer, he told him, “Your slaughtered sheep is just mutton, not a specific act of sacrifice on the day of Eid.” This means that it is not considered an Eid sacrifice because it was not done in accordance with my Sunnah. Therefore, what is in accordance with the Sunnah is that the Eid sacrifice is done after the Eid prayer. Sacrificing before the prayer is outside the specified time and will not be recognised as an Eid sacrifice. Al-Hafidh said in Fat-hul Baaree (10/17): Shaikh Abu Muhammad Bin Abu Hamzah stated: “This narration affirms that even if an act of worship is performed with a sincere intention, it will not be deemed righteous unless it aligns with the prescribed divine revelation”.

What will provide further insight into this matter is when Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud arrived at a gathering in the Masjid, where each individual had a collection of stones/pebbles. Amongst them, there was a man who was saying: “Say Subhaanallaah a hundred times; say Laa-ilaaha Il-lal laah a hundred times; say Allaahu Akbar a hundred times”. So they repeated.  Then Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud approached them and said: “What is this that you are doing?” They said: “O Abu Abdurrahman! These are pebbles to count the number of times we say Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha Illal laah and Subhaanallaah”. He said: “Count your sins and I assure you that you are not going to lose anything of your good deeds. O Ummah of Muhammad! How quick is your destruction! These are the companions of your Prophet present in great numbers; these are his clothes not worn out yet, and his pots are not broken yet. I swear by the One (i.e. Allah) in Whose Hands my soul is, either you are following a religion that is better than the Religion of Muhammad or you are opening a door of misguidance”. They said: “O Abu Abdurrahman! We swear by Allah that we intend nothing other than good”. He said: “How many people want good but never reach it!” [Sunan Ad-Daarimee 1/68-69. Also recorded by Imam Al-Albani in As-Silsilah As-Saheehah. Number 2005]

Regarding the positive results of worship, they include a relaxed heart, a peaceful state of mind, an increase in one’s provision, a state of overall well-being, serenity, and tranquillity. The Qur’an contains numerous verses and the Sunnah includes several narrations that emphasise these positive outcomes, and that fear of Allah and righteous deeds lead to happiness in both this life and the hereafter. Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) states:

وَلَوۡ أَنَّ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱتَّقَوۡاْ لَفَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡہِم بَرَكَـٰتٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ

And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwa (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth. [Al-A’raf. 96]

The noble verse highlights the connection between worship and the positive outcomes in a Muslim’s life. Those who fear Allah and have faith in Him will be rewarded and provided for by Allah in this world. Blessings from the heavens and the earth, such as rain, vegetation, and treasures, will be bestowed upon them. Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) states about the people of the Scripture:

وَلَوۡ أَنَّہُمۡ أَقَامُواْ ٱلتَّوۡرَٮٰةَ وَٱلۡإِنجِيلَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡہِم مِّن رَّبِّہِمۡ لَأَڪَلُواْ مِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَمِن تَحۡتِ أَرۡجُلِهِم‌ۚ

And if only they had acted according to the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel), and what has (now) been sent down to them from their Lord (the Qur’an), they would surely have gotten provision from above them, and from underneath their feet. [Al-Ma’idah 66]

The content of these two verses regarding the inhabitants of the towns and the followers of the scripture pertains to the worldly reward for those who have faith in Allah and are mindful of Him. As for the reward in the Hereafter for the believers and the God-fearing, Allah says:

وَلَوۡ أَنَّ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡڪِتَـٰبِ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱتَّقَوۡاْ لَڪَفَّرۡنَا عَنۡہُمۡ سَيِّـَٔاتِہِمۡ وَلَأَدۡخَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

And if only the people of the Scripture had believed (in Muhammad) and warded off evil (sin, ascribing partners to Allah) and had become Al-Muttaqun (pious), We would indeed have blotted out their sins and admitted them to Gardens of pleasure (in Paradise). [Al-Ma’idah 65]

Allah [The Mighty and Majestic] says:
يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَقُولُواْ قَوۡلاً۬ سَدِيدً۬ا

O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth).

This verse signifies an act of devotion, and Allah subsequently highlights its positive outcomes, stating:

يُصۡلِحۡ لَكُمۡ أَعۡمَـٰلَكُمۡ وَيَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ ذُنُوبَكُمۡۗ وَمَن يُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۥ فَقَدۡ فَازَ فَوۡزًا عَظِيمًا

“He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger) he has indeed achieved a great achievement”.

Indeed, being guided towards righteous and correct actions and having one’s sins forgiven in the afterlife are positive results of worship. This noble verse highlights the positive outcomes of acts of worship in both this worldly life and the afterlife. In this life, Allah will guide individuals towards righteousness and goodness, enabling them to make sound decisions and follow the path of Allah with clarity. In the afterlife, Allah will grant forgiveness for sins and erase all evil deeds. Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) also says:

وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ مَخۡرَجً۬ا
وَيَرۡزُقۡهُ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَحۡتَسِبُ‌ۚ

“And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine”.

This noble verse affirms that fear of Allah and worshipping Him alone, along with adhering to His commandments and abstaining from what He has prohibited, will rescue an individual from challenging and arduous circumstances. Furthermore, Allah bestows sustenance upon those who obey and revere Him from unexpected sources beyond their imagination. Allah says:

“And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter easy for him”.

Indeed, as a result of fearing Allah, one can experience the ease of their affairs. Allah will simplify their journey toward righteousness and unveil paths that bring joy and contentment in both this world and the hereafter. Allah says:

“And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will remit his sins from him, and will enlarge his reward”. This pertains to the rewards in the afterlife that are attained through one’s fear of Allah.

Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) says:

“O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you Furqan a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty”.

The verse shows that those who fear Allah and obey Him and His Messenger will be given the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. They will follow Allah’s path with clarity and guidance in this life. In the next life, Allah will erase their sins and forgive them.

Also, in the latter portion of the verse addressing the proper conduct when it comes to loans and debts, Allah (The Most High) says: [وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ‌ۖ وَيُعَلِّمُڪُمُ ٱللَّهُ‌ۗ-So be afraid of Allah, and Allah teaches you].

Allah states in the story of Nuh [peace be upon him] and his people:

“I (Nooh) said (to them): Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance; And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers”.
The mentioned matters in the previous verses are positive results of worship. The worship mentioned here is seeking forgiveness, and its positive result is that Allah will bless them with abundant rain, increase their wealth and children, and grant them gardens and rivers.

Furthermore, akin to the aforementioned verse, Allah also referred to Hud [peace be upon him] and his nation:

وَيَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ يُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡڪُم مِّدۡرَارً۬ا وَيَزِدۡڪُمۡ قُوَّةً إِلَىٰ قُوَّتِكُمۡ

“And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you (from the sky) abundant rain, and add strength to your strength”.

Likewise, Allah mentions about His Prophet Muhammad and the people:

وَأَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ يُمَتِّعۡكُم مَّتَـٰعًا حَسَنًا إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ۬ مُّسَمًّ۬ى وَيُؤۡتِ كُلَّ ذِى فَضۡلٍ۬ فَضۡلَهُ ۥ‌ۖ

“Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding Grace to every owner of grace (i.e. the one who helps and serves needy and deserving, physically and with his wealth, and even with good words)”.

Allah (The Most High) says:

مَنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحً۬ا مِّن ذَڪَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٌ۬ فَلَنُحۡيِيَنَّهُ ۥ حَيَوٰةً۬ طَيِّبَةً۬‌ۖ وَلَنَجۡزِيَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡرَهُم بِأَحۡسَنِ مَا ڪَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

“Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment, and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter)”.

This noble verse affirms that faith and good deeds result in a good and happy life- a life filled with fear of Allah, obedience to Him and His Messenger, and a great reward in the Hereafter.

As for the narrations in the Sunnah regarding the positive results of the acts of worship in a Muslim’s life, there exists a valuable piece of advice from the noble Prophet to Ibn Abbas: “Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you”. This hadeeth was reported by Imam Tirmidhee (number 2516) and he graded it Hasan Sahih. In another wording of this hadeeth reported by Imam Ahmad (Number 2803), the Prophet said to Ibn Abbas: “Be Mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. Acknowledge Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will acknowledge you in times of hardship”.

Ibn Rajab provided precious commentary on this hadith in Jami Al-Uloom Wal Hikam. He explained that Allah’s protection for His servant manifests in two ways: safeguarding the individual’s body, wealth, children, and family, as well as protecting his religion by shielding him from doubts that may lead to misguidance and unlawful desires. As a result, the person can maintain righteousness and steadfastness in both his religious and worldly matters. This divine protection is granted to those who are conscious of Allah, those who adhere to His commandments and refrain from what He has prohibited. Allah rewards such individuals based on their mindfulness of Him, and recompense is given in accordance with one’s deeds. The Prophet’s statement “He (Allah) will protect you” serves as a reward for the positive outcomes that stem from righteous actions, with the reward being commensurate with one’s actions. As for the statement of the Prophet “Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you”, this means that you will find Allah in front of you- Allah will guard and protect you, and He will protect you from every evil. The statement of the Prophet “Acknowledge Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will acknowledge you in times of hardship” means that if you remain in obedience to Allah and His Messenger in times of ease and well-being, Allah will reward you by protecting you during times of severe hardship and critical situations. What will shed more light on this is the tale of three individuals who were strolling when the rain started to pour, forcing them to seek shelter in a mountain cave. A large rock blocked the entrance, trapping them inside as if they were in a grave while alive. They then recalled and reminded each other of the righteous deeds they had done for the sake of Allah during times of ease, using them as a means of seeking intercession. One mentioned his kindness towards his parents, another his abstention from fornication for the sake of Allah, and the third his fulfilment of a worker’s rights even after the worker had left without collecting his wages. By invoking Allah with these righteous actions, the rock miraculously moved, allowing them to escape from the cave. [1]

Also, prayer, zakat, fasting, and hajj are acts of worship and each of them brings positive outcomes in the life of a Muslim. Prayer is a fundamental pillar of the Religion and serves as a deterrent against immoral and wicked actions. It establishes a strong connection between a person and Allah, and by strictly observing the five daily prayers in congregation with fellow Muslims, one can strengthen their bond with Allah, remaining constantly attached to Him day and night. By performing the obligatory five daily prayers for the sake of Allah, as well as the voluntary prayers, a person will be rewarded by Allah for their devotion. Moreover, prayer helps to distance oneself from immoral and wicked deeds. Whenever the urge to disobey Allah and engage in evil actions arises, the individual is reminded of the purpose behind performing prayer and the importance of being consistent in its practice. This motivation stems from the desire to receive rewards from Allah and the fear of His punishment. Ultimately, prayer acts as a shield against immoral and wicked acts, thus one is distanced from evil. Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) says:

إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنۡهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡفَحۡشَآءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِ‌ۗ

“Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahsha’ (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.) and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed, etc.)” [al-Ankabut 45]

Also, the positive impacts of Zakat are truly immense. It serves as a means of cleansing the soul from stinginess and avarice. It acts as a way to purify one’s wealth, allowing it to flourish and multiply. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in achieving the goal of what is known as ‘Social Security’ in today’s society. When the wealthy give Zakat to the poor and needy, their needs are met and they also receive nourishment. This obligation of Zakat Payment, obligated by Allah, is taken from the wealth of the wealthy. It has been transmitted in a hadith reported by Mu’adh Ibn Jabal that the Prophet stated: “And if they offer their Salah (five daily prayers), tell them that Allah has enjoined on them Zakat of their properties and it is to be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor among them”. (2)

Zakat payment brings significant benefits to the wealthy as it cleanses their souls, increases their wealth, and earns them rewards from Allah for helping their less fortunate Muslim brothers and sisters in need. Through this act of charity, the needy have their needs met and their poverty alleviated. Allah has commanded that Zakat should be collected from the wealth of wealthy individuals in a way that will assist the impoverished and the needy while ensuring that the wealthy are not adversely affected. Zakat is a small sum obtained from ample wealth, which Allah has bestowed upon people. Allah has mandated the contribution of this small portion, which does not burden the wealthy when they give it, but rather aids the poor and needy – those who lack resources and possess no wealth.

One of the positive results of showing charity and kindness to the poor and needy is exemplified in a narration by Abu Hurairah, where the Prophet stated: While a person was in the wilderness he heard a voice from the cloud (commanding it thus): Irrigate the garden of so and so. (After that the clouds slunk aside and poured water on a stony ground. It filled a channel amongst the channels of that land and that person followed that water and he found a person standing in the garden busy in changing the course of water with the help of a hatchet. He said to him: Servant of Allah, what is your name? he said: So and so. And it was that very name which he had heard from the clouds. And he said to him: Servant of Allah, why do you ask me my name? He said: I heard a voice from the clouds of which It is the downpour, saying: Water the garden of so and so, (with a mention) of your name. What do you do (for the favour) shown to you by Allah in this matter? He said: Now as you state so; I look what yield I get from it, then I give one-third as charity out of it and I and my family eat one-third of it and one-third I return to it as investment.’’ And in another narration of this same hadeeth, he said: I earmark one-third for the poor, the needy, and the wayfarer. (3)

As for fasting, it has tremendous benefits as it serves as a form of protection. The Prophet said, “Fasting is a shield.” (4)  It serves as a shield against the hellfire in the hereafter and shields against disobedience. Fasting diminishes a person’s desires, thus curbing their impulsive actions and serving as a safeguard against engaging in harmful and forbidden deeds driven by indulgence. Indulging excessively can lead the soul towards unfavorable outcomes both in this life and the hereafter. Because of this, the Prophet said: “Paradise is surrounded by hardships and the hellfire is surrounded by all kinds of desires and passions”. (4)

The journey to paradise necessitates the practice of patience in refraining from disobedience, while the path to hellfire is encompassed by all forbidden desires. By distancing oneself from these forbidden desires, safety is ensured. However, engaging in such desires leads to falling into what Allah has prohibited. Although this forbidden pleasure may provide temporary satisfaction, its consequences bring sorrow, remorse, and humiliation in both this life and the hereafter. It has been reported in a hadith on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud that the prophet stated: “O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, and whoever is not able to marry, is recommended to observe Sawm (fast) as fasting will diminish his sexual power”. (6)

Henceforth, the Prophet explicitly stated that if an individual is capable of entering into marriage, they should promptly pursue it to maintain their chastity and enable another person (i.e. the wife) to do the same. However, if one is unable to get married, one should dedicate oneself to the Prophetic solution advised by the noble Messenger, which is fasting. This practice serves as a shield and safeguard against succumbing to acts of disobedience. To summarise, this is valuable guidance bestowed by the noble Messenger to the younger generation, emphasising that they should marry if possible, and if not, they should control their desires through fasting. Regarding the fasting of wealthy individuals, it serves as a reminder of hunger pangs. Consequently, they contemplate the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah, as they have Muslim brethren who experience hunger pangs even without fasting. This realisation stems from their inability to alleviate extreme hunger. As a result, this introspection motivates them to exhibit kindness towards the impoverished and contribute to the support of the destitute and needy.

Regarding the hajj, it is a great act of worship. Allah has obligated it to His servants at least once in their lifetime. Hajj encompasses various acts of worship that involve both financial contributions and physical actions. It has praiseworthy outcomes in an individual’s life. The noble Prophet stated: “(The performance of) Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous one. And the reward of Al-Hajj Al-Mabroor (the one accepted by Allaah) is nothing but Paradise”. (7) Abu Hurairah said that Allah’s Messenger was asked about the best of deeds, so he replied, “To believe in Allah and His Messenger”. The questioner then asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, “To participate in Jihaad”. The questioner again asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, “To perform Hajj Mabroor (which is accepted by Allaah…)”. (8) Abu Hurairah also narrated that Allah’s Messenger said: “Whoever performs Hajj for Allah’s sake only and does not have sexual relations with his wife and does not do evil or sins; then he will return (after hajj, free from sins) as if he was born anew”. (9)

A ‘Hajj Mabroor’ is a pilgrimage that is performed in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet, and a clear indication of a ‘Hajj Mabroor’ is the positive transformation that occurs within the individual after completing the pilgrimage. If a person’s negative circumstances improve or if their already good state becomes even better, then it is evident that their Hajj is Mabroor (InShaallah).

Hajj and Umrah encompass various acts of worship, one of which is Tawaaf. This particular act of worship is exclusive to its designated location, namely around the Kabah. Tawaaf is a form of worship that has been specifically ordained by Allah to be performed around the Baitul Ateeq (the Ancient House) within the Haram. Upon reaching Makkah, individuals engage in Tawaaf around the Baitul Ateeq as a means to draw closer to Allah (The Mighty and Majestic). This act of worship, Tawaaf, holds a unique significance that can only be fulfilled within the confines of Makkah. It is important to note that Tawaaf is exclusively performed around the Noble Kabah and cannot be carried out in any other location on Earth. This serves as a reminder and raises awareness that performing Tawaaf in any other place or around any tomb is not sanctioned by Allah (The Mighty and Majestic). Hence, it is impermissible to engage in Tawaaf around any tomb or any other location on Earth apart from the Noble Kabah. Furthermore, the same principle applies to kissing and gesturing towards the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner. It is important to note that Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) has not prescribed for Muslims to seek closeness to Him by kissing any other stone or gesturing towards it, except in these two specific locations. This is exemplified by the actions of Umar Ibnul Khattaab who approached the Black Stone, kissed it, and then said: “No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither harm (anyone) nor benefit anyone. Had I not seen Allaah’s Messenger kissing you, I would not have kissed you”. (10)

Another benefit of Hajj and Umrah is the act of changing into Ihram attire, a simple garment worn by all pilgrims regardless of their social status. This act serves as a reminder of the white shroud that will eventually cover the deceased, prompting the pilgrim to focus on performing good deeds and preparing for the afterlife which is the most valuable provision for the hereafter, as Allah says:

وَتَزَوَّدُواْ فَإِنَّ خَيۡرَ ٱلزَّادِ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ‌ۚ

“And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness, etc.)”.

Another positive result of Hajj is the congregation of pilgrims at Arafah, symbolising the gathering of people on the Day of Judgement. Therefore, standing at Arafah serves as an inspiration for individuals to ready themselves for the Day of Judgement through the practice of virtuous actions. Furthermore, during the Hajj, Muslims from both the Eastern and Western regions of the world have the opportunity to come together and cooperate. They get to gain insight into each other’s circumstances, fostering a bond of shared happiness and joy. Similarly, they empathise with each other’s hardships, offering guidance and assistance in fulfilling their religious obligations. In this way, they collaborate in promoting righteousness and piety, as commanded by Allah. These significant acts of worship prescribed by Allah (The Mighty and Majestic), upon which His Religion of Islamic Monotheism is established, yield positive results for a Muslim in both this life and the Hereafter. [1]: Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: The Prophet said, “While three persons were walking, rain began to fall and they had to enter a cave in a mountain. A big rock rolled over and blocked the mouth of the cave. They said to each other, ‘Invoke Allah with the best deed you have performed (so Allah might remove the rock)’. One of them said, ‘O Allah! My parents were old and I used to go out to graze (my animals). On my return, I would milk (the animals) and take the milk in a vessel for my parents to drink. After they had drunk from it, I would give it to my children, family, and wife. One day I was delayed and on my return I found my parents sleeping, and I disliked waking them up. The children were crying at my feet (because of hunger). That state of affairs continued till it was dawn. O Allah! If You regard that I did it for Your sake, then remove this rock so that we may see the sky.’ So, the rock was moved a bit. The second said, ‘O Allah! You know that I was in love with a cousin of mine, like the deepest love a man may have for a woman, and she told me that I would not get my desire fulfilled unless I paid her one hundred Dinars (gold pieces). So, I struggled for it till I gathered the desired amount, and when I sat in between her legs, she told me to be afraid of Allah and asked me not to deflower her except rightfully (by marriage). So, I got up and left her. O Allah! If You regard that I did it for Your sake, kindly remove this rock.’ So, two-thirds of the rock was removed. Then the third man said, ‘O Allah! No doubt You know that once I employed a worker for one Faraq (three Sa’s) of millet, and when I wanted to pay him, he refused to take it, so I sowed it, and from its yield I bought cows and a shepherd. After a time that man came and demanded his money. I said to him: Go to those cows and the shepherd and take them for they are for you. He asked me whether I was joking with him. I told him that I was not joking with him, and all that belonged to him. O Allah! If You regard that I did it sincerely for Your sake, then please remove the rock.’ So, the rock was removed completely from the mouth of the cave.” [See Saheeh Bukhaari. [2] Narrated Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet sent Mu’aadh to Yemen, he said to him, ‘’You are going to a nation from the people of the Scripture, so let the first thing to which you will invite them is they should testify to the Tawheed of Allah [i.e. Laa ilaaha Il-lal lah (None has the right to be worshipped except Allah)]. If they accept that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them, five obligatory congregational Salah (prayers) to be offered in one day and one night. And if they offer their Salaat (five daily prayers), tell them that Allah has enjoined on them Zakat of their properties and it is to be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor among them. And if they agree to that, then take from them Zakat, but avoid the best property of the people”. [Sahih al-Bukhari (The Book of Tawheed). Hadeeth Number: 7372]
