QUESTIONS TO THE NOBLE SHAIKH MUHAMMAD BIN HAADI AL-MADKHALEE

REGARDING MADEENAH DOT COM AND IT’S STANCE TOWARDS SALAFI PUBLICATIONS, IN THE UK.

Dated: Sunday, 16th/J2/1431H (5th May 2010)

 A pivotal quote:

“So if they [Madeenah.Com and associates] do not return (to what is correct) and do not repent, then they are not to be put in front of the people, nor are they to be co-operated with, rather they are to be warned against – I say, in addition to that, they are warned against so that the people can beware of them, because if the people do not beware of them, they will fall into their snare, and go astray as a result of them.”

Our elder brother, Abul-Hasan Maalik Ibn Aadam, recently asked the noble Scholar about an American caller who was involved in the efforts of Madeenah(dot)Com to counter the da’wah of the brothers at Salafi Publications in Birmingham, UK. He also asks about the validity of the position that some of the noble callers in the US took towards those involved with Madeenah(dot)Com to not co-operate with them in da’wah and to not lecture alongside them in the lessons and yearly conferences until those involved in Madeenah(dot)Com recanted and repented from their campaign to wrongfully ascribe extremism and excessiveness to Salafi Publications.

The full question can be found on SunnahPublishing.Net

Abu al-Hasan Malik al-Akhdar (hafidhahullaah) asked:

“One of the brothers returned (here) recently after leaving the Islamic University in Madinah and began to participate in the field of da’wah in giving lessons and lectures. The problem is that when he was in the university, he used to speak against some of our Salafi brothers in America and Britain, specifically, the brothers at Maktabah Salafiyyah in Birmingham. And he accuses them and others from amongst the brothers with exaggeration and extremism in the subject of criticism of men and factions in the West.

Likewise, he was with the jamaa’ah (faction) in Madinah who took up a position against the Maktabah, and announced (and propagated) the likes of these affairs on the Internet on a website called Madeenah.Com.

So when we noticed his speech regarding our brothers about whom we know nothing except goodness, and spreading of the Sunnah in the West, and returning to the Scholars, we took a position that we will not cooperate (i.e. participate) with him in lessons and lectures, until he holds back from his speech, and rectifies what preceded from him. And we have not warned from him, and nor have we spoken about him openly, so the question O Shaykh is what is the correctness of this position of the brothers and what do you advise your sons, the du’aat (callers) in the West on this matter?”

Shaykh Muhammad bin Haadee (hafidhahullaah) answered on Sunday, 16th/J2/1431H (5th May 2010):

“I say, those whom the questioner has asked about, I know about them, I also know their problem, and to the well-informed (i.e. myself) have you come upon. And our brothers from al-Maktabah as-Salafiyyah in Birmingham, I know them fully (completely). I know them for more than 13 or 14 years, no, around 15 years (in fact). And I know them, and I know the soundness of their way, and their methodology which they are upon. And those whom you have mentioned (Madeenah.com), I know, some of them used to be with us (i.e. present with us) in al-Madinah, and in this topic [i.e. of da’wah to Allaah and refuting opposers], they amount to nothing when compared to our brothers at the Maktabah Salafiyyah. For our brothers in al-Maktabah as-Salafiyyah in Birmingham there is [in their da’wah] truthful striving and good, benificent deeds and many blessed and thanked for affairs, in disseminating the true, sound, Salafi Da’wah to people in all areas of the West, [all of] which is to be thanked for, and which is to be mentioned about them in goodness, for may Allaah reward them with goodness, and specifically the brothers, Abdul-Wahid Abu Khadeejah, and Dawud Burbank, and likewise the brother Bilal Abu Hakeem, and besides them from the Salafi brothers who are with them, co-operating with them in al-Maktabah as-Salafiyyah, from those whose names I have forgotten right now.As for those whom you have mentioned, then they have erred with the extremity of error. And I mentioned this to some of them when they were here, and I have given direction to some of them, and I explained to them in that regard, however, they refused that they should accept. So the likes of those, if they do not return (from their way), then it is not desirable for them to be put in front of the people (to teach, give lectures).As for al-Maktabah as-Salafiyyah and their speech regarding men, and their criticism of people in the West, then I do not know from them except goodness regarding this aspect. Rather, they ask us about everyone they know over there. So those about whom we know, we answer, and those whom we do not know, we ask them for documented [evidence] from him, from his speech (voice), which is translated when it is not in the Arabic language, or from his writings, which is translated when it is not in the Arabic language, and when it is in the Arabic language, they bring it to us with his (recorded) voice, and so on like this. And we pass judgement, and give verdict upon what we hear. And the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam), “I am just a man, I pass judgement based upon what I hear” or as he (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said.The point here is that those who accuse the brothers with harshness (tashaddud) and exaggeration (ghuluww), and extremism (tatarruf), then they are in reality, erroneous. And some of them, and I say this with all truthfulness, are liars, transgressors. So we ask Allaah, the Sublime and Exalted, for guidance for the one who erred (amongst them), and we ask Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, for guidance for the one who lied and transgressed, and that He returns him to the way of truth and correctness, and if not, then may Allaah relieve us and relieve the Muslims of his evil, indeed He is Jawaad, Kareem.

As for what relates to criticising men in the West or the East, then criticism is a legislative methodology, by way of it is the Sunnah protected, and by way of it is the religion preserved, and by way it is the aqidah protected, and by it are Ahl us-Sunnah distinguished from the Ahl ul-Bid’ah, and thus Ahl us-Sunnah are given preponderance and their way is followed, and Ahl ul-Bid’ah are warned against and they are not sought, their way is warned against. And whoever rejects this, then he is an opposer of what the Righteous Salaf were upon in this topic. And these books of the Salaf are present. And criticism is a legislative methodology and criticism of men, factions and groups is from giving of advice for the sake of religion of Allaah, the Blessed and Exalted. Thus, it is vital to explain (in the likes of this topic), for this is from the giving of advice to the people so that they are not misguided in this subject, and it is dealt with appropriately in the various places (i.e. works, books), the Scholars of the Sunnah and Hadeeth have explained it, and the Imaams of Hadeeth they are the Imaams of this matter, even if the people defy this, and even if some of the people refuse this now, and begin to renounce (this matter), for the Imaams of Hadeeth, they are the Scholars of this discipline, they are the knights of this field, and the people return to them and they (constitute) that which is depended upon in (terms of) speech (in this subject).

And this position of yours is a correct position. So if they [Madeenah.Com and associates] do not return (to what is correct) and do not repent, then they are not to be put in front of the people, nor are they to be co-operated with, rather they are to be warned against, I say, in addition to that, they are warned against so that the people can beware of them, because if the people do not beware of them, they will fall into their snare, and go astray as a result of them. We ask Allaah for pardon and safety, and all praise is due to the Lord of the Worlds.”

“The most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection would be the image-makers.” [Bukhaari & Muslim] UPDATED

  1. Two of the most poignant ahadith are the following and will clearly highlight the severity of partaking in taking photos and worse still doing an action that is haraam and then displaying it to be seen, whether in the houses, or on any type of social media; i.e. facebook, twitter etc

The most severely punished people (1) on the Day of Resurrection would be the image-makers. [Bukhaari and Muslim]

Every image-maker will be in the fire of Hell. A soul will be made for him for every image which he has made and it will punish him in the Hell-fire. [Muslim]

(1) Shaikh Uthaymeen was asked: how do we reconcile between the statement of the prophet (sallal.laahu.alayhi wasallam), “the people who will receive the severest punishment on the day of judgement will be the picture makers….” and the fact that the mushrikoon will receive the greatest punishment on the day of judgement.

Answer : The severest punishment here means; the severest punishment received by the sinners whose sins have not reached disbelief. As for the severest punishment received by the mushrikoon, their punishment will be the severest amongst all the people.

For further details see pages 34-35 فوائد ومسابقات المئين من فتاوى ودروس ابن عثيمين

Ahadith from the Prophet sallallaahu’alaihiwasallam:

Allah’s Messenger said: “Those who make these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to them, ‘Make alive what you have created.’” [Bukhaari and Muslim]

Narrated ’Aaishah radiyallaahu’anhaa: Allaah’s Messenger sallallaahu’alaihiwasallam returned from a journey when I had placed a curtain of mine having images over the door of a chamber of mine. When Allaah’s Messenger sallallaahu’alaihiwasallam saw it he tore it apart and said: “The people who will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be those who try to make the like of Allaah’s creation.” [Bukhaari]

The Prophet sallallaahu’alaihiwasallam forbade taking the price of blood, the price of a dog and the earnings of a prostitute. He also cursed the one who took or gave ribaa (interest), the lady who tattooed others or got herself tattoed, and the image maker. [Bukhaari]

The most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection would be the image-makers. [Bukhaari and Muslim]

Every image-maker will be in the fire of Hell. A soul will be made for him for every image which he has made and it will punish him in the Hell-fire. [Muslim]

Allaah the Glorious and Exalted said, “Who is more a wrongdoer than one who tries to create creation like My creation. Let him create a small ant or a grain of wheat.” [Muslim]

Fatawa on the ruling of Photos:

Question: What is the ruling on taking photographs, when they are for necessity and when they are for adornment?

Answer: Pictures of living (humans and animals) are unlawful except for necessity. Examples of necessity include identity photos, passport photos, or photos of criminals for the purpose of identification and then arrest when they commit a crime or attempt to flee.

Shaykh Bin Baz

Question: What is the ruling concerning hanging a picture on the wall? What is the ruling concerning owning pictures of people?

Answer: It is not allowed to hang a picture or keep a picture of any being that possesses a soul. It is obligatory to destroy such pictures. This is because the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi-wasallam) said,

“Do not leave any image, but [instead] efface it.” [1] It was confirmed in the hadith of Jabir radiyallaahu ‘anhu that,

“That because the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi-wasallam) prohibited having pictures in houses.” [2]

Therefore, all pictures meant for remembrance should be torn to pieces or burnt. However, pictures that are needed out of necessity, such as for official identification purposes and so forth, may be kept.

Question: What is the ruling concerning taking pictures using a mobile phone considering some people say that it is just capturing a shadow and there is no prohibition in that, so what is the ruling concerning that?

Answer: For HIM there is no prohibition in that, as for the Sunnah and the evidences then picture taking/making in general is Haraam (prohibited) and the picture maker is cursed. And he will receive from the most severest of punishments on the Day of Judgment. So what is it that takes the mobile phone out from this generality? The Messenger made picture making Haraam without exception by any means; (whether that be by way of ) a mobile phone, a camera, by hand(sculpting) or by drawing, he made it absolutely Haraam. So who is he that makes an exception from what the messenger sallallaahu alaihi wasallam said and attempts to redress the messenger. Apart from that the Muhaqqiqeen (verifiers) from the Scholars make an exception in the case of necessity, if a person is in need of taking a picture for a necessity then it is allowed due to this necessity due to His saying – the Most High:

(وقَدْ فَصَّلَ لَكُم مَّا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ إلاَّ مَا اضْطُرِرْتُمْ إلَيْهِ )

while He has explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you, except under compulsion of necessity? [Surah al-‘An’aam:119]

As for picture taking as a hobby or as a form of art by the use of the camera or by hand or by any object then it is Haraam and it is not allowed except in case of necessity only. In accordance to the necessity it is a concession. It is a concession due to a necessity only.

Question: When I go out on excursions with a group of friends, I take pictures to keep them as mementos. What is the ruling on taking pictures for this purpose?

Answer: The ruling is this practice is that it is unlawful, that is, if the picture is taken of something with a sole (a human or an animal), The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said: The people who will be most severely punished on the Day of Judgement will be the picture-makers. [1] The Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) also cursed those who make pictures. As for taking pictures of things without a soul – a car, a plane, a tree, etc., – there is no harm in that. And with Allaah is the facilitation to do what is right.

My dear brothers and sisters in Islaam this life is short and it is the place of action and increasing in good deeds and staying away from sins, and the hereafter is the place of accountability, where we will be held to account for that which we have done.

Do NOT underestimate the severity of this sin or the severity of the punishment due to this action, fear Allah oh muslims and repent to your Lord who is the Oft Forgiving but also know and remind yourselves that Allah is severe in punishment to those who transgress his limits, so repent to your Lord and leave off this action of photography which has such a dangerous recompense for the one who does it.

May Allah give us and you success in this life and the next.

The Religion is Advice: Enjoin the Good & Forbid the Evil

A brief advice to the brothers and sisters, baarakAllaahu feekum:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Indeed in the hadith of tameem ad daarimee which is well known the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said:

‘Ad-Deen An-Naseehah, Ad-Deen An-Naseehah, Ad-Deen An-Naseehah’
Muslim

Allah says:

Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islâm), enjoining Al-Ma’rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islâm has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful.
Aali Imran verse 104.

And He says:

He ( Muhammad sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) commands them for Al-Ma’rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islâm has forbidden); he allows them as lawful At-Taiyibât [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khabâ’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.)
Al A’raf verse 157

And in a Hadith the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said:

One of you does not truly believe until he loves for his brother that which he loves for himself.
Bukhaari & Muslim

And he  sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said

‘Verily one of you does not truly believe until I become more beloved to him than his father, his son and all the people.’
Bukhaari & Muslim

We would like to remind our honourable brothers and sisters of the great sin of image making, an issue that is so serious it is one of the Major Sins and as such it’s severity and grave nature has been related to us in many ahadith of the prophet sallaahu alaihi wa sallam. Please click the link below, whichi ncludes the hadeeth as well as Fatawa of the Scholars past and present. May Allah give us and you success in this life and the next.

False Principles of The People of Bidah

“We Correct Mistakes But We Do Not Make Jarh”

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baz (rahimahullaah) said:

”Indeed the criticism from ahlul ilm and rebuttal of one whose rebuttal is an obligation, this is from the affair of giving sincere advice to the Ummah……..”

Imaam Muhammad Bin Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) was asked about the above false principle, so he said:

”This is a mistake, rather we refute the one who willfully opposes the truth.”

Al-Allaama Saaleh Al-Fawzaan was asked about the above false principle, so he said:

”This principle has no foundation…..the people of falsehood must be refuted.”

Al-Allaama Zaid Bin Haadi Al Madkhalee said:

”This principle is not from the principles of the Rabbaani scholars.”

Obligation of Repentance (Tawbah) – Shaykh Fawzaan

Belief that Tawbah is an obligation upon the slaves and repenting to Allah is from the major and minor sins

Belief that repentance is an obligation is obligatory, repentance from sins is an obligation Allah Lofty and Sublime said:

‘And turn to Allah all of you, Oh believers so that you may be successful.’ (An-Noor Verse 31)

And He said:

‘O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will remit from you your sins’     (At-Tahrim Verse 8)

And He said:

‘And whosoever does not repent then they are from the Dhalimoon(wrongdoers etc)’ (Al-Hujraat Verse 11)

Therefore it is obligatory for the Muslim to repent from his sins and from his evil deeds and it is obligatory that he does not continue upon them or commence upon them or that he is negligent with regards to sins, and he says; ‘this is easy’

Do not be negligent with it for it is from the sins, rather hasten with repentance.

The Most High said:

‘And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; – and none can forgive sins but Allah – And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.

For such, the reward is Forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allah’s Orders).’ Aal Imraan (Verses 135-136)

Allah commended them and promised them (those who repent)

He said:

‘’Allah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allah will forgive and Allah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise.

And of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil deeds until death faces one of them and he says: “Now I repent;” (An-Nisaa Verse 17-18)

When death arrives the repentance is not accepted and if mankind continues to live then his repentance in the presence of death is (furthermore) not accepted, so upon him is to rush to make repentance and not to delay it. As soon as he commits a sin he repents to Allah immediately.

Man is not infallible and errors occur from him, shortcomings occur from him, sins occur from him; however Allah Lofty and Sublime by way of his mercy has opened the door of repentance. He has opened for you the door of repentance and he calls you to it and he has promised you that He will forgive you if you are truthful in your repentance. So much so that if a disbeliever repents to Allah; Allah forgives him (the sin of) disbelief, Shirk, the killing of people and other than that.  If he repents to Allah He will forgive him. He said:

‘Say to those who have disbelieved if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven’ (Al-Anfaal Verse 38)

And in the Hadith:

‘Repentance nullifies that which came before it’ (1)

Therefore the Muslim needs to repent, the Messenger [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] use to seek forgiveness and repent to Allah more than a hundred times a day.

He [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] said:

‘Oh People! Repent to Allah, verily I repent more than seventy times a day’ (Bukhaari)

His companions (radiallaahu anhum) enumerated that in the gatherings he (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) would say more than a hundred times:

‘I seek Allah’s forgiveness,I seek Allah’s forgiveness’ (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

And he was the Messenger of Allah he (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam)!

So how about other than him?!

Therefore we need to repent to Allah the Lofty and Sublime, Man is not infallible sins occur from him, shortcomings occur from him, and mistakes occur from him, so he needs to repent.

And all the praises belong to Allah that He has opened the door of repentance for us and He has promised that He will accept (our repentance) and wipe away our sins.

(1)    This Hadith is reported in silsilah da’eefah of Shaykh Al-Albaani however there are several other Hadith with similar meaning such as :

 ‘’The one who repents from sins is like the one who has no sin’ Ibn Majah Declared Hasan by Shaykh Al Albaani

Golden Advice And Medication For The Heart

Golden Advice And Medication For The Heart

Ibn Abee Haatim(.328H) Rahimahullaah said:

”I entered Damascus and came upon the students of hadeeth, and I passed by the circle of Qaasim al Joo’ee(d.248 AH). I found a group sitting around him and he was speaking. Their appearance amazed me; and I heard him saying:

”Seize The Benefit Of Five Things From The People Of Your Time:

When you are present, you are not known;

When you are absent you are not missed;

When you are seen, your advice is not sought;

When you say something, your saying is not accepted;

And when you have some knowledge, you are not given anything for it.

I Also Advise You With Five Matters:

When you are treated unjustly, do not behave unjustly;

When you are praised, do not become happy;

When you are criticised, do not become upset;

When you are not believed, do not become angry;

And if people act deceitfully towards you, do not act deceitfully towards them.”

Ibn Abee Haatim said:”So I took that as my benefit from Damascus.”
