Which is Better the Grateful Wealthy Person or the Patient Poor Person? – Shaykhul Islam ibn Taymiyyah

Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullah) said, Shaykhul Islam ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) was asked about this issue, and he said,

“Many have disagreed regarding which is better between the wealthy grateful person and the patient poor person. So, one group of scholars and devout worshippers held one was better and another group of scholars and devout worshippers held the other position was stronger. Both positions have been reported from Imam Ahmad. As for the companions and the taabi’een it is not narrated from a single one of them that they believed one group was better than the other.

Verily, a third group said neither has any virtue over the other, except due to Taqwa, so whoever has the strongest Eemaan and Taqwa then he is better, and if (two people) were equal in Eeman and Taqwa then they are likewise equal in virtue. This is the most correct position, because the texts of the Quran and Sunnah give preference to Eemaan and Taqwa.

Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. (An-Nisaa:135)

Indeed, from the prophets and the early generations were wealthy people who were better than most of the poor, there was also poor from the prophets and early generation who were better than most of the wealthy. Those who are most complete (in this affair) are those who fulfil both, they are patient and grateful, just as our Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam) was, and Abu Bakr and Umar were (Allah be pleased with them both).

It is possible however, that for some people poverty is more beneficial than wealthiness, just as good health is better for some and ill health is better for others (in terms of their Eemaan, Taqwa and connection with Allah).

As has been reported that the Prophet (1) (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam) reported from his Lord,

Indeed from my servants are those who only wealthiness is suitable, if i made him poor that would corrupt him, indeed from my servants are those who only poverty is suitable, if i made him rich that would corrupt him, indeed from my servants are those who only good health is suitable, if i made him ill that would corrupt him, indeed from my servants are those who only ill health is suitable, if i made him healthy that would corrupt him, indeed with my slaves I am the Well-Aware, the All-Seer (of things that benefit them) (2)”

Slightly paraphrased from Ibnul Qayyim’s ‘Iddatus Saabireen pg.216

(1) Shaykh al-Albaani declared the hadith da’eef jiddan in Silsilah Al-Ahadeeth Ad-Da’eefah hadith 1775

In a recording Shaykh Al-Albaani comments, “this hadeeth is not authentic however it has actually been observed that for some people wealth is suitable and for some poverty is suitable.”

Shaykh Bin Baz (rahimahullah) said in a fatwa, “the meaning is correct.”

(2)

And if Allah were to enlarge the provision for His slaves, they would surely rebel in the earth, but He sends down by measure as He wills. Verily! He is in respect of His slaves, the Well-Aware, the All-Seer (of things that benefit them). (Ash-Shoora: 27)

If a Person’s Reality Opposes that which He Presents to the People of Good, then He is not Truthful – Shaykh al-Uthaymeen

“The meaning of sidq (truthfulness) is that the information is in conformity with reality, if this is the case then it is the truth and if it opposes the reality then it is kadhib (a lie/falsehood). Truthfulness is in statements and likewise in actions, i.e., that which is done outwardly is in conformity with what is inside (of belief etc), so that when a person performs an action it is in conformity with what is in his heart.

The one who does actions to show off then he is not truthful, because he shows the people that he is from the (sincere) worshippers, and this is not the case.

The mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah) is not truthful, because he makes apparent that he is a muwahhid (one who worships Allah alone upon Tawhid) and this is not the case.

The munaafiq (hypocrite) is not truthful because he makes apparent Eemaan (in Allah, His Book, His Messenger, His Angels, The Last Day, Pre-Decree the good of it and the bad of it), whilst he is not a believer.

The mubtadi’ is not truthful because he makes apparent that he is following the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam) however he is not a follower (of the sunnah).

That which is important is that truthfulness is that which is in conformity with reality, and it is one of the characteristics of the believers and it’s opposite, lies and falsehood are from the characteristics of the hypocrites, refuge is sought with Allah.” (1)

The one who says “The Methodology of the Salaf is not Fit for Modern Times” – Shaykh Fawzaan

What do we say to some who people claim that the Methodology of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’ah is not suitable in these times?

The one who holds that the Methodology of the Salaf as-Saalih (pious predecessors) is not fit for these times, then this one is astray, guiding others astray. The methodology of the pious predecessors is the Methodology and Way which we were commanded to follow by Allah until the establishment of the Hour.

The prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah upon him) said,

Indeed whosoever from among you lives (a long time) will see much differing, so (when you see this) it is upon to you adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me, hold on to it and bite onto it with your molar teeth. (1)

This was an address to this nation (and it remains valid) until the establishment of the Hour. This demonstrates to us that it’s a must to proceed upon the Methodology of the Salaf and that it is suitable for all places and all times.

Allah – The Most High – said,

And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajiroon (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansaar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajiroon) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him (At-Tawbah: 100)

and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith).

This comprises the Ummah until the establishment of the Hour, therefore it is obligatory upon the Ummah to follow the Methodology of Muhajiroon and Ansaar.

Imam Malik (rahimahullah) said,

“Nothing will rectify the latter part of this nation, except that which rectified it’s beginning.”

Whoever wants to separate the Ummah from the Pious Predecessors (in reality) he desires evil for the Muslims. He desires to change Islam, he desires the occurrence of innovations and violations (of the sound religion and methodology), this person should be rejected and his “proofs” should be refuted and his evil warned against.

It is a must to adhere to the methodology of the Salaf, taking them as an example, it’s required to proceed upon their methodology and that (requirement) is present in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (Allah’s Peace and Blessings upon him) as we have mentioned.

So whoever desires to cut the khalaf (successors) of the Ummah from their Salaf (predecessors) then he is a person causing corruption in the lands, it is an obligation to reject his statement and to refute his speech, and to warn from him.

The ones who this evil statement is known from are the Shia and those who agree with them, those who misguide others, so no attention is paid to them.

Benefits of ‘Itikaaf on Safeguarding the Tongue and One’s Actions – Shaykh Al-Fawzan

(During ‘itikaaf and outside of ‘itikaaf) a person should speak for that which he needs for religious and worldly affairs as for pointless superfluous speech then there is no benefit in it from two angles:

1. The wasting of a persons time and busying him away from the remembrance of Allah.

2. It’s possible and refuge is sought with Allah, that the speech may be impermissible and his speech may nullify his actions, because he utters a statement which Allah is angered by. It is possible a person could nullify all of his actions and apostate from Islam (1), therefore speech can be dangerous for a person if he does not safeguard it, and there is no curing it except by ‘itikaaf because when a person isolates himself solely for the worship of Allah, he accustoms himself and trains himself upon little speech and upon the restraining of his tongue.

Ta’leeqaat ‘ala Mukhtasar Zaad al-Ma’aad pages 601-602

(1) On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah upon him) say,

‘Indeed a servant may utter a single word and because of it plummet into the Hellfire farther than the distance between the east and the west.’ Bukhari 6477 Muslim 2988

How to Attain and Actualise Sincerity in a Persons Actions? – Shaykh Abu Abdillah Khalid adh-Dhufayri (Allah preserve him)

There are many ways to actualise sincerity from them are the following,

(1) A person recognises the reality and status of this worldly life, it’s passing by and will not last.

(2) That it is has no value in reality.

(3) That a person remembers death frequently.

(4) He remembers the purpose for his creation.

(5) He ponders upon the names and attributes of Allah, he recognises and affirms that Allah is Al-‘Aleem He knows all, he has the Muraaqabah of Allah, meaning he is aware that Allah knows, hears and sees everything he does.

(6) He works towards rectifying his sincerity and realises it is from the highest levels of worship.

(7) There is no arrival to paradise except by the Pleasure of Allah.

There are many affairs and means which will aid a person rectify his sincerity and these are from them.

Responsibilities That Make You Upright & Spread the Daw’ah – Shaykh Rabee (Allah preserve him).

The salafi bears a responsibility; upon him is to study (beneficial) knowledge, to study the books of the salaf, the belief of the salaf, their exegesis of the Quran and their explanations of the messenger’s hadeeth (alayhis salaatu was salaam), so that he is grounded in (beneficial) knowledge, whilst he truthfully calls to Allah with knowledge and insight.

He (The Most High) said,

Say, “This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him.” (12:108)

Meaning, I (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) and my true followers, call to Allah with sure sighted insight; ie upon knowledge.

The caller to ignorance (misguidance, evil, innovations), such as the callers of misguidance and innovation – they are ignoramuses, ignorant of the path of truth and the (correct) call to Allah; they call to falsehood.

The people of innovation and misguidance call to falsehood, even if they are characterised as having knowledge, and even if they have certificates, then they are (still) ignoramuses, just as some of the salaf said, ‘a scholar has never brought about an innovation, rather innovations are only brought about by the ignorant ones, even if they call themselves scholars, then they are (still) ignorant.’

So learn and study the Book of Allah, and the Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wa salam), study the Oneness of Allah (The Blessed & Most High).

May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our, Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

Purification of The Heart Can Only Be Attained Through Giving Precedence to Allaah Over Desires!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

A slave is not afflicted with a punishment greater than the hardness of the heart and being distanced from Allaah. The farthest hearts from Allaah are the hardened hearts, and when the heart is hardened, the eyes become lacking in (discernment, perception, crying out of fear of Allaah etc). The hardness of the heart occurs due to four [affairs] when their limit is exceeded: Food, sleep, speech and mixing [with the people]. And just as the diseased body is not benefited by food and drink, likewise the heart is not benefited by admonitions when it is afflicted with [evil] desires. Whoever desires purification of his heart then let him give precedence to Allaah over his desires. The heart that is attached to desires is veiled from Allaah depending on the strength of its attachment to [such desires]. [Ref 1]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] also said:

The heart does get sick just as the body gets sick and its cure is found in repentance and bring keen [to obey Allaah and the Messenger etc]. The heart does become rusty just as a mirror becomes rusty, and remembrance of Allaah polishes it. The heart does become unadorned just as the body, and fear of Allaah beautifies it. The heart does suffer from discomfort just as the body suffers from discomfort due to hunger, and its food and drink are knowledge and awareness of Allaah, love of Allaah, reliance upon Allaah, turning sincerely to Allaah in repentance and obedience with Tawheed, and carrying out acts of obedience to Allaah. [Ref 2]

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah [rahimahullaah] said:

Know that every limb was created to perform a specific action, so a sign of its [i.e. any limb] sickness is when guilt is established due to performing [an evil] act. A sign of the hand’s sickness is when it is guilty of striking unlawfully; a sign of eye’s sickness is when it is guilty of staring unlawfully; a sign of the heart’s sickness is when it is guilty of not doing what it was created for, such as acquiring knowledge and wisdom; love of Allaah, worshiping Allaah alone and preferring that over every other desire. Therefore, if a person was to possess knowledge of everything but he does not know Allaah (Gloried be He), then it is as if he knew nothing.  The sign of knowing Allaah is to love Allaah, for whoever truly knows Allaah will love Allaah, and a sign of having love for Allaah is that one does not give precedence to anything over Allaah. So whoever prefers something from the beloved things over Allaah, then his heart is sick, just like the stomach that prefers mud and not bread, due to losing the desire for bread. [Ref 3]

Seek Allaah’s Refuge Against Sin And Debt!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa] narrated that the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] used to invoke Allaah in the salaah [before the Tasleem] saying:

O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave and from the trial and affliction of Maseeh Ad-Dajjaal and from trial and affliction of life and death. O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from sins and from being in debt.” So somebody said to him, ‘’Why do you so frequently seek refuge with Allaah from being in debt?’’ The Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) replied, “A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks, and breaks promises whenever he makes (them)]”. [Ref 1]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] combined [in this supplication between seeking Allaah’s refuge] from sins and debt, for indeed sins necessitate loss in the afterlife and debt necessitates loss in the worldly life. [Ref 2]

Too Much Speech About Manhaj!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Question to Shaikh Rabee [may Allaah preserve him]: What is your view regarding the one who says, “Too much speech about Manhaj [i.e. sound methodology that distinguishes the Salafi Methodology from the groups of bidah] hardens the heart?”

Answer: The Shaikh [may Allaah preserve him] firstly questions the deviated view presented in the question with exclamation marks, in order to make the listener realise its falsity and acknowledge the opposite of it; then he stated as follows: “Too much speech about sound Manhaj and studying it hardens the heart; but calling to fictitious [beliefs, deeds, ideas, views etc], bidah, misguidance and the ideas of the khawaarij softens the hearts!!!  The call to sound methodology – the call to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam], and what the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of Messenger contains regarding [sound] creed, [sound] acts of worship, [sound] deeds and [sound] rectification of the [Islamic] Methodology- is a great affair which must be [established]. The affairs of misguidance [that have been innovated in this sound] methodology are numerous, and regardless how much a person speaks [about sound methodology], his efforts are little in comparison to what the affair requires. At present we speak about sound methodology, but has it reached all the Muslims?! But speech based on the path of the Tableeghees, the Ikhwaanees, the people of misguidance, the people of bidah, the [carriers] of fictitious views, deviated views, [deviated] political views softens the heart! Is this a correct statement? This is the speech of the foolish ones – those who are fed up with the true Islamic methodology, so they utter the likes of this false speech that hinders [people] from the path of Allaah”.

[17] The Three Monotheistic Religions! [Brief Observations On This Statement Uttered By Writers Who Are Ignorant About Islaam And Misguided Modernists Speaking In The Name of Islaam]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Firstly: We repeat once again the fact that rebutting false beliefs, ideas and views does not necessitate bad behaviour, rather Muslims are commanded to behave well towards others.

To Proceed:

Allaah [The Most High] said: [ قُلۡ يَـٰٓأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ تَعَالَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ ڪَلِمَةٍ۬ سَوَآءِۭ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَكُمۡ أَلَّا نَعۡبُدَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَلَا نُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُنَا بَعۡضًا أَرۡبَابً۬ا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَقُولُواْ ٱشۡهَدُواْ بِأَنَّا مُسۡلِمُونَ –Say (O Muhammad): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: “Bear witness that we are Muslims]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 64]

Meaning: say to the people of the scripture – the Jews and Christians, [تَعَالَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ ڪَلِمَةٍ۬ سَوَآءِۭ بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَكُمۡ – Come to a word that is just between us and you]- Meaning: Come let us unite upon the statement which all the Prophets and Messengers agreed upon and none opposes it except the obstinate and misguided. This statement is not specific to anyone of us; rather it is something that you and us should establish between us, so this is justice and fairness in debate. Then Allaah explains this and said: [أَلَّا نَعۡبُدَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَلَا نُشۡرِكَ بِهِۦ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا  –  that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him]- Meaning: We should single out Allaah in worship, devoting all love, fear and hope to Him alone, and we should not associate anyone as partner with Allaah in worship- neither a Prophet, an Angel, a Righteous Person, an Idol, a Deified image, a living or non-living thing, [وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُنَا بَعۡضًا أَرۡبَابً۬ا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ‌ۚ  – and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allaah]; rather all obedience is to be devoted to Allah and His Messengers. [فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَقُولُواْ ٱشۡهَدُواْ بِأَنَّا مُسۡلِمُونَ – Then, if they turn away, say: “Bear witness that we are Muslims]”. [Tafsir As-Sadi]

Whoever amongst the followers of the previous Prophets comes into contact with Muhammad’s [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] message, they must believe in him and aid him, even if they had a revealed book and another Prophetic tradition, just as Allaah [The Exalted] said: [  لَمَآ ءَاتَيۡتُڪُم مِّن ڪِتَـٰبٍ۬ وَحِكۡمَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ جَآءَڪُمۡ رَسُولٌ۬ مُّصَدِّقٌ۬ لِّمَا مَعَكُمۡ لَتُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهِۦ وَلَتَنصُرُنَّهُ  – Take whatever I gave you from the Book and Hikmah (understanding of the Laws of Allah, etc.), and afterwards there will come to you a Messenger (Muhammad) confirming what is with you; you must, then, believe in him and help him]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 81]

Allaah [The Exaalted] said:

Say (O Muhammad): “We believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma’il (Ishmael), Ishaque (Isaac), Ya’qub (Jacob) and Al-Asbat [the twelve sons of Ya’qub (Jacob)] and what was given to Musa (Moses), ‘Iesa (Jesus) and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between one another among them and to Him (Allah) we have submitted (in Islam)”; then Allaah [The Exalted] said: [ وَمَن يَبۡتَغِ غَيۡرَ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِ دِينً۬ا فَلَن يُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِينَ- And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayaat 84-85]

A group amongst the Salaf [pious predecessors] stated that when this Aayah was revealed, some of the Jews and Christians said, “We are Muslims”, so Allaah said, [وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلۡبَيۡتِ مَنِ ٱسۡتَطَاعَ إِلَيۡهِ سَبِيلاً۬‌ۚ   – And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence)]; so they said, “We will not perform Hajj”, then Allaah said, [وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ  – and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Alamin (mankind and jinns)]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 97]

Anyone who does not believe that it is obligated on him to perform hajj even though he has the ability, then he is a disbeliever (Ref 1) based on the consensus of the scholars just as the Qur’aan has made that very clear. The Jews and Christians do not consider Hajj to be obligated on them, so they are disbelievers. [An Excerpt from Al-Jawaabus Saheeh Liman Baddala Deen Al-Maseeh pages 200-201. Slightly paraphrased]

Finally, we repeat once again the fact that rebutting false beliefs, ideas and views does not necessitate bad behaviour, rather Muslims are commanded to behave well towards others.
