The Idol (Ba’l), Shaytan and Noble Prophet Ilyas

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Idol Ba’l and Shaytan, The State of The Children of Israel After The Demise of Prophet Hizqeel and The Advent of Prophet Ilyas

Allah, The Most High, said:

And verily, Iliyas (Elias) was one of the Messengers. When he said to his people: “Will you not fear Allah? Will you call upon Ba’l (a well- known idol of his nation whom they used to worship) and forsake the Best of creators- Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?” But they denied him [Iliyas (Elias)], so they will certainly be brought forth (to the punishment), except the chosen slaves of Allah. And We left for him (a good remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times; Salamun (peace) be upon Ilyasin (Elias)! Verily, thus do We reward the good-doers; Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves. [[Surah As-Saffaat 123-132]

Ba’l (the Idol): It was said that it was made of gold, measuring twenty cubits in length, and had four faces. They were beguiled and misled through it, They exalted it to the extent that they appointed four hundred custodians to serve it, and made them prophets. Shaytan used to enter Ba’l’s interior and uttered misguided legislation, then the custodians would memorise and teach it to the people. They are the people of Ba’labek within the lands of Greater Syria and their city was named after it. [1]

After the death of Prophet Hizqeel, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, major (troubling) events took place among the Children of Israel and they forgot what Allah had obligated to them, until they adopted idols and worshipped them besides Allah. So, Allah sent to them Ilyas, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, as a prophet. The prophets, peace be upon them, sent to the Children of Israel after Musa, peace be upon him, revived what had been forgotten from the Torah. [2]

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

“Bani Isra’eel used to be ruled and guided by prophets. Whenever a prophet died, another would take over his place. There will be no prophet after me, but there will be Caliphs who will increase in number.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! What do you order us (to do)?” He said, “Obey the one who will be given the pledge of allegiance first. Fulfil their (i.e. the Caliphs) rights, for Allah will ask them about (any shortcoming) in ruling those Allah has put under their guardianship.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari 3455]

Imam Ibn Hajr, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“Whenever corruption appeared amongst them, Allah sent a Prophet to rectify their affairs and put an end to that which they changed in the rulings of the Torah”. [3]

Prophet Ilyas, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was associated with a king of the Children of Israel named Ahab, whose wife’s name was Arbel. He used to give an attentive ear to Ilyas and believed him, and Ilyas used to look after his affairs. However, the rest of the Children of Israel had adopted an idol named Ba’l which they worshipped besides Allah.

The kings were scattered throughout Greater Syria, and every king ruled over a part of it. One day, the king who was associated with Prophet Ilyas, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him: “O Ilyas! I swear by Allah that I see nothing regarding what you call to but falsehood. I do not see so-and-so and so-and-so – naming kings from the kings of Israel who worshipped idols – except that they are like us, partaking in food and drink, and enjoying their ruler-ships. Their affairs, which you claim are false, have not lessened their worldly possessions and we do not consider ourselves superior over them”. It is said- and Allah knows best – that Ilyas said: “Innaa Lil-laahi Wa Innaa Ilayhi Raji’un” and his hair and skin bristled; then he rejected what the king said and left him. The king then did what the other kings did by worshipping idols and acted how they acted. Ilyas then said: “O Allah! Indeed, the children of Israel have refused (to follow Tawhid), instead they disbelieve in You, worship  other than You and being ungrateful for the blessings bestowed upon them. [4]

The scholars of Tafseer and history mentioned that when many (troubling) events occurred after the death of Prophet Ḥizqeel, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and idols were worshipped, so, Allah sent Ilyas, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He began calling them to the path of Allah, but they did not listen to him. He supplicated to Allah against them that rain be withheld, thus, they suffered greatly. He hid himself out of fear for his own life. One day, he reminded them that what has afflicted them, their livestock and plants is due to their sins, and that if they think that what they are upon is true, invoking their idols would not bring them relief. They invoked their idols but received no relief. They realised their error and asked him to supplicate to Allah for them. He supplicated for them, thus, Allah sent rain and their lands prospered. However, they did not abandon the path they were upon. [5]

Reality of the Rafidah – By Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan and Al-Allamah Rabee

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, was asked:

Is it correct that the first to innovate the path of the Raafidah was Abdullah Ibn Saba – a Yahudi?

Response:

Yes, without a doubt. The Rafidah or the Shiites in general are of two types: The Shiites from the fire worshipers and the Shiites from the Yahud. They hide behind Islam to corrupt it. The Yahud plotted through Abdullah Ibn Sabah and the first thing he began with was to ignite fitnah against Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him. Listen below:

Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked:

Our Shaikh, may Allah preserve you. The questioner says: What is the ruling on the common people of the Rawafid and how do we deal with them?

Answer:

The questioner differentiates between the common people and other than them. This is a good approach. The common people who neither speak ill of the wives of Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, nor do they declare the companions to be disbelievers, nor do they believe that the Qur’an is distorted; however, they have some Rafd [i.e. beliefs of the rafidah] and some hatred for the companions without declaring them disbelievers and what is similar to (these deeds), these ones are misguided innovators in religious matters and we do not declare them disbelievers. (But) whoever joins their heretics in declaring the companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to be disbelievers, speaking ill of the wives of Allah’s Messenger, and the filthy belief that the Qur’an has been distorted, and that there is an addition and deficiency in it, this (person) is a disbeliever similar to the disbelievers of the Yahud and Nasara. There is no distinction between their common people and their scholars (in this affair).

Question: How do we deal with them?

Answer: If dealing with them is with regards to a worldly affair—business transactions and what is similar to that— it is permissible to trade with a Yahudi, a Nasrani and a Rafidi. However, as for co-operating with them in issues of religion, no.

Do not help one another in sin and transgression. [5:2]

Rather their scholars and callers are boycotted and they are warned against.

What do Rawafid say when told to abandon major acts of polytheism?!

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Muqbil Bin Hadi Al-Wadi’i, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated: Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, said:

And they wonder that a warner (Prophet Muhammad) has come to them from among themselves! And the disbelievers say, “This (Prophet Muhammad) is a sorcerer, a liar. Has he made the aaliha (gods) (all) into One Ilaah (God – Allah). Verily, this is a curious thing!” And the leaders among them went about (saying), “Go on and remain constant to your aaliha (gods)! Verily, this is a thing designed (against you)! We have not heard (the like) of this among the people of these later days. This is nothing but an invention! Has the Reminder been sent down to him (alone) from among us?” Nay! But they are in doubt about My Reminder (this Qur’an)! Nay, but they have not tasted (My) Torment! [Surah Sa’d. 4-8]

So, you say to the Rafidah, “Indeed, it is shirk to invoke other than Allah with regards to seeking benefit and protection from harm in a matter which none can (fulfil) besides Allah. It is not permissible to invoke Ali Ibn Abee Taalib [may Allah be pleased with him] or other than him amongst the dead [may Allah have mercy upon them] because Allah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:

And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmeer (the thin membrane over the date stone). If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything). O mankind! it is you who stand in need of Allah, but Allah is Rich (Free of all wants and needs), Worthy of all praise. [Surah Fatir. 13-14]

And Allah said:

And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping.’ [Surah Al-Ahqaf. 5-6]

And Allah said:

And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allah, any other ilaah (god), of whom he has no proof, then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely! Al-Kaafiroon (the disbelievers in Allah and in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, pagans, idolaters, etc.) will not be successful.’ [Surah Al-Muminoon. 117]

And if you say, “Indeed others have joined them (i.e. the Mushrikoon) in this (affair”, so I say, “Whoever joins them in this (affair of shirk) is similar to them”. Read

Allah said:

And invoke not besides Allah, any that will neither profit you, nor hurt you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one of the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers). And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He will. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’ [Surah Yunus. 106-107]

When you convey these verses and what is similar to them to the (Rawaafid), and then say to them, “Indeed, is it permissible to call upon the dead and seek deliverance and rescue from them?” They (say), “You are a Wahhaabi. You hate the family of the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him]”. This is the same regarding the extreme Soofees when you say, “Indeed, the Awliyaa can neither benefit nor harm”, they say, “You hate the Awliyaa”. Indeed, mighty is the statement that comes out of the mouths of these two sects; they utter nothing but a lie!

The Most Dangerous Traitors and Infiltrators Within The Ummah

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Most Dangerous Liars in Society- The Munafiqun

Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali, may Allah preserve him, stated:

Among the categories of the liars are the Munafiqun and they are more dangerous for the society, especially the Islamic society. Due to this, Allah spoke about them a lot, warned against them a lot and made known their characteristics in chapters of the Qur’an; rather there is a specific chapter of the Qur’an called Surah Al- Munafiqin. Allah, The Blessed and Most High, exposed them – unveiled their hypocrisy and lies. And from that which Allah stated about them is:

And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: “We believe in Allah and the Last Day” while in fact they believe not. Meaning, they are liars.

They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not! In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. And when it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “We are only peacemakers.” Look at this big claim! Rather:

Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.

Every liar and corrupt person in the earth does not tell the people that he is a corrupt person; instead he says, “I am one who rectifies the affairs” and claims that he leads the Ummah to righteousness.

In summary, indeed Allah made known their lies and deception, and that this lie increases them in sickness – and Allah’s Refuge is sought. They are from the people of hypocrisy, and they are increased in hypocrisy. Allah said:

Have you (O Muhammad) not seen those (hypocrites) who take for friends a people upon whom is the Wrath of Allah? They are neither of you (Muslims) nor of them (Jews), and they swear to a lie while they know. [Al-Mujaadilah. 14]

They made an oath to the believers that they are indeed believers, while they are Munaafiqoon, liars and allies of the Yahud [i.e. those Yahud who abandoned the path of Musa and rejected Muhammad].

Allah has prepared for them a severe torment. Evil indeed is that which they used to do.

They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not! In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. And when it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “We are only peacemakers.”

Allah said:

Have you (O Muhammad) not seen those (hypocrites) who take for friends a people upon whom is the Wrath of Allah (i.e. Jews)? They are neither of you (Muslims) nor of them (Jews), and they swear to a lie while they know. [Al-Mujaadilah. 14]

They swore to the believers that they are indeed believers, while they are Munaafiqoon, liars and allies of the Yahud.

Allah has prepared for them a severe torment. Evil indeed is that which they used to do.

They have made their oaths a screen. Meaning, for their lies;

Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, so they shall have a humiliating torment. Their children and their wealth will avail them nothing against Allah. They will be (the) dwellers of the Fire, to dwell therein forever. On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together (for their account), then they will swear to Him as they swear to you (O Muslims). And they think that they have something (to stand upon). Verily, they are liars! Shaitan (Satan) has overtaken them. So he has made them forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Shaitan (Satan). Verily, it is the party of Shaitan (Satan) that will be the losers! Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), they will be among the lowest (most humiliated). Allah has decreed: “Verily! It is I and My Messengers who shall be the victorious.” Verily, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty. [al-Mujadilah. 15-21]

Allah made known the state of these people, exposed them, made it known that they are liars and described their actions to be evil. Due to their state of loss, they took these oaths and swearing by Allaah as a screen. Allah said:

When the hypocrites come to you (O Muhammad), they say: “We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.” Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars indeed. They have made their oaths a screen (for their hypocrisy). Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allah. Verily, evil is what they used to do. That is because they believed, then disbelieved, therefore their hearts are sealed, so they understand not. And when you look at them, their bodies please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as blocks of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies, so beware of them. May Allah curse them! How are they denying (or deviating from) the Right Path.

And when it is said to them: “Come, so that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness from Allah for you”, they turn aside their heads, and you would see them turning away their faces in pride. It is equal to them whether you (Muhammad) ask forgiveness or ask not forgiveness for them. Verily, Allah guides not the people who are the Fasiqin (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). [Al-Munaafiqoon. Verses 1-6]

Allah testified that they are liars; even if they testified to the Messengership of Muhammad and that Allah alone has the right to be worshipped, they are still liars and do not believe in that. Allah exposed them because He knows their reality- the disbelief and hypocrisy they hide in their hearts. Allah made it known that they disbelieved and believed thereafter, then they disbelieved finally; and Allah made it known that they do not understand and that even if Allah’s Messenger – the most virtuous amongst the creation – sought forgiveness for them, they will not be forgiven and Allah will not guide them to Iman and the truth due to their [wilful] wickedness and evil.

There maybe hypocrites in the Ummah who have these characteristics, thus receive this recompense from Allah. Sadly, some people think that hypocrisy has ended, while in reality it is something that will continue. Hudhaifah, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

“The hypocrites at present are more evil than the hypocrites during the era of Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him”. Then he was asked about this, so he said, “Indeed, the hypocrites used to hide their hypocrisy and these people at present make it manifest”.

Whenever time elapses, they become many amongst the groups of ahlul bidah, burden Islam and the Muslims with their evil, plots and hypocrisy; and all of that is done under the guise of Islam and in the name of Islam. Many of ahlul bidah or many Mubtadi’ah– in the past and thereafter – in belief and matters related to shirk are from their plots and cunning ways. Therefore, let the Muslims be careful of these hypocrites and infiltrators within the innovated groups. [1]

Shaikh Shamsuddeen Al-Afghaani, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Allah, The Most High, guided mankind through Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and the clear manifest evidences given to him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him – a guidance that could not be described by those who were well versed in the art of descriptions and (a guidance) that surpassed the knowledge of those with great perception. And through this guidance, Allah opened the eyes of the blind ones, the ears of the deaf ones and the hearts of the heedless ones. Allah, The Most High, united them on one religion-(the religion of pure Islamic monotheism) – and prior to that they were in complete disunity, enmity towards one another and followed corrupt creeds.

Allah united their hearts, thus they became true brothers in Islam through this great blessing. Thereafter, everything worshipped besides Allah, such as graves, trees, stones and idols ceased to exist and all worship was devoted to Allah alone. People followed the true Religion of Islamic monotheism and worshipped Allah alone, except those whom Allah willed that they were to remain as people of polytheism, hypocrisy and followers of the altered and distorted previous scriptures. The darkness of polytheism was dispelled and the banner of Tawheed was raised in the lands amongst the Arabs and non-Arabs.

Allah’s Messenger passed away, while Islam was established and in authority-superseding all other ways of life and creeds. Then the rightly guided khulafaa of the Messenger [Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali continued to adhere to the path of the Messenger until the two powerful and great nations at the time-Rome and Persia-ended up in humiliation, degradation and in a state of fear after they had been in a state of security, and thus Caesar was restricted and besieged, and khosrau [or Chosroes] was subdued and destroyed.

When the enemies of Islaam saw that they were unable to do away with this religion, they implanted their disbelieving agents within it – those who pretended to be Muslims in order to kindle confusion, trials and tribulations, and spread polytheism by exaggerating the status of the pious people and exalting their graves through [beliefs and practices] that were not ordained by Allah. So, the Ummah [Islamic Nation] was put to trial through the plots of the [atheist, heretic and hypocrite] Abdullah Bin Saba, who claimed Uloohiyyah for Ali Ibn Abee Talib [i.e. that Ali (the cousin of the Prophet) had the right to be worshipped besides Allah.]

Abdullah Bin As- Sabah’s followers were known as the Saba’iyyah and later on they were known as the Rawaafid (shiites), the ismaaliyyah (shittes), the nusayriyah (shiites) and other than them amongst the Baatiniyyah. They worshipped the graves and its inhabitants, and built places of worship and shrines upon those graves. So, through these practices, they revived the (corrupt ancient practices) of those Jews, Christians and the idol worshippers (who deviated from the straight path of the Prophets and Messengers of Allah). This is how the practices of the worshippers of graves in this Muslim Nation manifested itself through the practices initiated by the rawaafid (shiites). [NB: The majority of the rawaafid Shiites presently live in Iran & Iraq, and their leader is khamanei]

Secondly: The books of Greek philosophy that propagated the ideas of grave and idol worship were translated into Arabic, so many of those who attributed themselves to Islam busied themselves with these books, such as the likes of Al-Faraabee (a) Ibn Sinaa Al-Hanafi (b) Naseer At’Toosee –an advocate of disbelief and polytheism (c) and other than them amongst those who played tricks with Islaam, just as Paul played tricks with Christianity. They were influenced by the ideas of the Greek Philosophers, so they became callers to grave worship through Greek Philosophy. The practices of these people was rife within the ranks of the people of rhetoric amongst the Hanafi Maatooreediyyah (d) and the Ash-ariyyah Kullaabiyyah due to busying themselves with the Books of the Philosophers. They became callers to grave worship and callers to the creed of the Jahmiyyah at the same time, such as the likes of Taftaazaanee Al-Hanafi [The Philosopher of the Maatooreediyyah and Grave worshipers] and Jurjaanee Al-Hanafi [a caller to superstition]

Thirdly: A people who were more dangerous and misguided than the aforementioned groups emerged amongst the Muslims with a manifestation of asceticism. They appeared in the garb of righteousness – with tearful eyes, long flowing beards, elevated turbans, carrying large rosary beads and pretended to be calling to the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while they secretly practised the disgraceful acts inherited from false religions. They attempted to mix blatant lies with the Qur’aan and the authentic narrations in order to corrupt the clear evidences found in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah. These deviant heretics are known as the Hulooliyyah, Ittihaadiyyah Grave Worshipers (e), such as the likes of Hallaaj (309AH), Ibnul Faarid (632AH) Ibn Arabi (638AH), Ibn Sab’een (669AH) etc [2]

Footnotes:

[a] Al-Faraabee: Al-Faraabee said that Philosophy is more perfect than Prophet hood. Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said about him: ‘’Misguided; a disbeliever’’ Ibn Sinaa adopted his books and ideas of disbelief. [For further details concerning Al- Faraabee, See Majmoo Al-Fataawaa 2/67—86] [Dar At-Ta’aarud 1/10] [Ighaathatul Luhfaan 2/372-373]

Ibn Sinaa [The Heretic]: Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, was asked: What is your view regarding the one who praises Ibn Sinaa and places him within the ranks of the Muslim scholars?

Answer: Either this person is ignorant and is unaware of Ibn Sinaa’s state of affairs, therefore it is not appropriate that he should speak, rather it is obligated on him to keep quiet; or he is aware of Ibn Sinaa’s state of affairs and disbelief, so he affirms that for Ibn Sinaa and thus the ruling that applies to Ibn Sinaa is applicable to him, and Allaah’s refuge is sough; because he affirms Ibn Sinaa’s disbelief and praises him. This is very dangerous. [NB: [Takfir of an Individual (i.e. rules applied by Scholars before passing the judgement of disbelief against a Muslim – By Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) and translated by Dr. Shaikh Abu Iyaad (may Allaah preserve him).

But some people praise Ibn Sinaa only due to the fact that he was a physician – praised due to a worldly science. And amongst the disbelievers, there are those who are more proficient than him in this field. But why do they mention Ibn Sinaa in particular? They say that because he attributes himself to Islaam and this is a credit to the Islaam. Therefore, we say: Islaam is free from Ibn Sinaa and not in need of him. He is not to be praised because he is a Baatini, a philosopher an atheist. [at-Taliqat Al-Mukhtasar Alaa Qasidah An-Nuniyyah 3/1328]

Kufr, Dhulm, and the Illusion of Invincibility: Patterns in the Downfall of Tyrannical Nations and Empires

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Mighty and Majestic, said:

As for ‘Ad, they were arrogant in the land without right, and they said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?” See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them. And they used to deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.)! [Fussilat 15]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

This is a detailed account of the story of the two nations, Aad and Thamud. As for Aad, they were arrogant in the earth, together with their disbelief in Allah, their denial of His signs, and their rejection of His messengers. They subdued those – the servants of Allah – around them, oppressed them and were self-amazed with their strength.

They said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?”

In response, Allah reminded them of a fundamental truth known to all:

See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them.

If Allah did not create them, they would not have existed. Had they contemplated their situation in a correct manner, they would not have been deceived by their own power, thus, Allah punished them in a manner befitting the strength in which they had placed their misguided trust. [1]

Imam Al-Baghawi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The statement of the Almighty:

As for Aad, they were arrogant in the land without right, and they said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?”

This was in response to Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, who warned them of impending punishment. They arrogantly claimed that their strength could protect them from such retribution, boasting of their tall and powerful physiques. In response, Allah said to them:

See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them. And they used to deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.)] [2]

Imam Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Allah, The Exalted, said:

As for Aad, they were arrogant in the land without right.

Meaning, rebellious, insolent and disobedient.

They said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?

Meaning, believing that their physical strength and capabilities would protect them from Allah’s punishment.

See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them.

Meaning, they did not reflect on the fact that Allah, who created them, is indeed stronger than they are! Did they not contemplate the One whom openly declared their enmity against? For indeed, He (Allah) is Al-Adheem (Footnote a) who created all things and endowed them with the strength to exist, and His punishment is indeed severe. [3]

Imam Al-Qurtubi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The statement of Allah, The Exalted:

As for Aad, they were arrogant in the land – without right – towards the servants of Allah, (towards) Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, and those who believed in him.

They said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?”

They were deceived by their physical stature when faced with the threat of punishment, saying: “We are able to avert the punishment from ourselves by virtue of our strength”. This was due to their tall and mighty physiques. It has already been stated in the explanation of Surah Al-A’raf” (based on a report) by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, that the tallest among them was one hundred cubits, while the shortest was sixty cubits. In response, Allah said to them:

“See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them” and in ability, rather, the ability of a person is contingent upon Allah’s power, and indeed, Allah is the most capable. [4]

So We sent upon them furious wind in days of evil omen (for them) that We might give them a taste of disgracing torment in this present worldly life, but surely the torment of the Hereafter will be more disgracing, and they will never be helped. [Fussilat 16]

Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, said, Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Verily, Allah will give respite to the oppressor until when He seizes him and he cannot escape”. Then he [i.e. the Messenger] recited the verse:

Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the (population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful, and severe]. [Hud. 102]

Al-Allamah Zaid Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

There is a warning against oppression in this lofty hadith- oppression against oneself through different levels and types of sins. The one whom Allah has given wealth, good health, safety and stability while he persists upon sin, this is Allah’s plan in stages against this sinner because he deserves it;

And your Lord treats no one with injustice. [Al-Kahf. 49]

There’s a warning – in this hadith – against oppressing others because the one who oppresses others is called an oppressor and the one who oppresses himself through sins is called an oppressor. Therefore, the one who oppresses himself and the one who oppresses others are (exposed) to great danger in this life, in the grave and in the afterlife. If Allah gives him respite and does not hasten punishment against him, then indeed Allah reserves for him the punishment he deserves due to the statement of Allah:

Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the (population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful, and severe.

This is how the hadith is in agreement with the noble verse, that if Allah gives respite to an oppressor, it is not that Allah has neglected his affair. If Allah delays punishment against him in the worldly life, Allah multiplies it for him in the hereafter, thus, he is recompensed based on what he did and the evil deeds he committed. Allah is the possessor of (perfect) wisdom, because He recompenses a doer based on his deed- good recompense for good deeds and evil recompense for evil deeds. [5]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Everyone with a bit of (sound) intellect knows that the corruption of the world and its ruin occurs due to giving precedence to opinion over the divine revelation and (vain) desires over sound intellect. These two corrupt motives are not entrenched in a heart except that its destruction becomes inevitable nor in a nation except that its affairs are completely corrupted. [6]

The Imam also said:

Whoever contemplates the state of the world will recognise that every instance of rectification stems from Tawhid, singling out Allah in worship and obedience to His Messenger, Muhammad. Conversely, every form of evil, trial, hardship, scarcity in sustenance, and subjugation by adversaries, among other issues, arises from opposing the Messenger and the pursuit of paths other than those prescribed by Allah and His Messenger. Whoever truly  contemplates this matter and examines the world’s conditions from its inception until the time Allah ends it, he will realise this about himself and others, both in general and in specific situations. Indeed, there is no might or power except with Allah – The Most High, The Most Great. [7]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Industrialisation and modern inventions; everyone has participated in it – the righteous, the wicked, the believer and the disbeliever. As for religion and manners in this era, it has greatly declined. When this industrial advancement is devoid of (sound) religion and faith, it became a great harm from two angles: firstly, it beguiled many people, who – due of their ignorance – think that worldly advancement is proof to show that its people are more worthy of achieving every good than others. They are clearly misguided because a person maybe from the most skillful in matters related to the material world, whilst he is one of the most ignorant people in matters related to the (sound) religion, virtuous manners and the (other) beneficial affairs in this life and the next. Secondly, when these inventions are devoid of (sound) religion, its mercy and wisdom, it becomes a great disaster for humankind due to the wars that resulted from them- killing, destruction and other matters related to it. Its overseers and scholars are unable to laydown – for humankind -a stable, just and good life; rather they have not ceased moving from one miserable state to another. This is inevitable and the continuous state of affairs shows this. Therefore, all good is found in the sound religion and all evil is found in rejecting and willfully denying (Allah, His Messengers, His Laws, Guidance, Commands, Prohibitions etc).

Indeed, it is impossible to rectify the souls and acquire virtue solely through the worldly sciences. Experience and clearly witnessed circumstances are the greatest proofs regarding this affair, because despite its advancement and vastness it has been unable to nurture and rectify the souls, which is the determinant of (sound) rectification and success.

The Remedy: What the Religion of Islam propagates is that which is entrusted with this rectification; it is what will guide the thoughts towards the truthful and authentic sources of knowledge, guide the actions of the people towards good and prevent them from evil. Islam is The Rectifier of the Creeds and Manners- the thing that cultivates the thoughts, urges towards virtuousness and prevents from depravity.

The essence of that which the religion calls to – regarding belief in the Unseen, which includes belief in Allah and that which He possesses of Names, Attributes and Actions of perfection; belief in Angels, belief in recompense for one’s good and bad deeds in this life and the next, which cannot be known except through the Messengers, is what acquaints a person with the fact that rectification – in reality – is not possible through other than sound belief and the religion of Islam. Thus, even if the worldly sciences rectify (some) matters based upon that which people know in detail, it will still not be equal to the knowledge of the Messengers- neither will it reach that which is reached through the knowledge of the Messengers nor can it influence the souls in the manner in which the knowledge of the Messengers has done, because indeed the souls do not voluntarily submit except through belief in Allah, belief in His Angels, belief in His Books, belief in His Messengers and belief in the hereafter. And without this, voluntary submission is impossible, as is well known regarding human nature. [8]

The followers of truth will remain until the end of time. The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

A group of people from my Umma will always remain manifest upon the truth. They will not be harmed by those who forsake them until Allah’s Command comes to pass (i.e. the Day of Judgment). [9]

Why Ponder Upon The Story of The Nations of Old?

Many similar mishaps [troubles, problems] of life were faced by nations that have passed away before you, so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Verse 137]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Indeed, there were nations like yourselves before you, so look to their evil end. You have to know that the reason behind their evil end was due to their disbelief in the revelations of Allah and disbelief in Allah’s Messengers. They were the forefathers and you are the descendants. The main affair that connects you to each other is your disbelief and the ruling on that disbelief is destruction. [10]

Imam Muhammad Bin Salih Al-Uthaymin, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

If it is said, “What is the benefit in narrating to us the stories of the destroyed nations despite the fact that this Ummah will not be completely destroyed in a manner similar to the destruction of the previous nations before it?”

The Answer: Indeed, this has two benefits: The first benefit is a clarification of Allah’s blessings upon us that the occurrence of a complete destruction is removed from us, and that were it not for Allah’s Benevolence we would have been deserving of it. Second, the likeness of the punishment they received may occur in the hereafter for the one who did what they did, if punishment was not received in the worldly life. And this may be understood from the statement of Allah: “Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the population of towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful and severe. Indeed in that (there) is a sure lesson for those who fear the torment of the Hereafter.” So what is apparent from this Aayah is that what is similar to the punishment they received will happen in the Hereafter, and Allaah knows best. [11]

Verses 5-6 Surah Al-Fatihah

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The entire religion is founded upon two things as some of the Salaf stated that Al-Fatihah is the clear underlying basis of the Qur’an (based on) this statement:

It is You alone (O Allāh) that we worship and it is You alone that we ask for help (in Your obedience and in all of our affairs). [a]

The first part [It is You alone (O Allāh) that we worship] is to free oneself from ascribing partners to Allah and second [and it is You alone that we ask for help (in Your obedience and in all of our affairs)] is to declare that one has no power or might (except what Allah wills), and delegating all of one’s affairs to Allah, The Mighty and Majestic. This meaning is found in other verses of the Qur’an, such as the statement of Allah:

So worship Him (O Muhammad) and put your trust in Him. And your Lord is not unaware of what you (people) do. [Hud 123]

Say (O Muḥammad): “He is the Most-Merciful (who promised mercy to His believing servants), we have believed in Him, and upon Him have we relied. So soon, you will come to know (O polytheists who deny that He is the Most-Merciful and rely upon helpless idols) who it is that is upon clear error.” [b]

(He is) the Lord of the east (and its night) and the west (and its day), there is none worthy of worship but He, so take Him (alone) as Disposer of (your) affairs. [c] [1]

Guide us to the straight path.

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Meaning:

Guide and direct us, and grant us success on the straight path, which is the clear path leading to (the Pleasure) of Allah and His paradise. It is to know truth and act upon it, therefore, guide us to the straight path and keep us steadfast upon it. The guidance to the straight path entails adhering to the religion of Islam and abandoning all other religions, while the guidance along the path includes direction in all religious matters, both in knowledge and practice. This supplication is among the most comprehensive and beneficial for a servant of Allah. Due to this, it is obligated to a person to supplicate with it every Rak’ah in his prayer due to one’s overarching need for it. [2]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated about the levels of guidance:

First: The guidance of knowledge and clarity. Allah enables one to know the truth and understand it.

Second: Allah gives one the ability to reach it; otherwise, one remains incapable on their own.

Third: Allah enables one to be a desirer of it.

Fourth: Allah enables one to act upon it.

Fifth: Allah enables one to be steadfast and continue upon it.

Sixth: Allah removes the obstacles and opposing influences that are in opposition to it.

Seventh: Allah guides one along the path itself – a specific guidance, which is more specific than the initial guidance. This is because the first one is a general guidance along the path, whereas this second one contains its stages in detail.

Eighth: Allah enables one to see the true goal along the path and draws his attention to it, so that one remains focused in his adherence without being hindered from the paths leading to it.

Ninth: Allah makes one witness his neediness and overarching need for this guidance above every need one cannot do without.

Tenth: Allah enables one to witness the two divergent paths that are away from the straight way, and they are the path of those who have earned Allah’s anger due to turning away from the truth intentionally and out of obstinacy, and the path of those who have strayed due to ignorance and misguidance. [3]

We ask Allah:

O Turner of the hearts! Keep my heart upon Your religion.

O Allah! Indeed, I ask You for steadfastness in this affair (regarding sound adherence to the religion) and firm resolve to adhere to the path of guidance.

O Allah! By Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if life is good for me, and let me die if death is good for me; O Allah! I ask You to grant me (the blessing of having) fear of You in private and public, and I ask You (to make me utter) a statement of truth in times of contentment and anger, and I ask You for moderation when in a state of wealth and poverty, and I ask you for blessings that never ceases, and I ask You for the coolness of my eye that never ends, and I ask You (to make me pleased) after (Your) decree; and I ask You for a life of (ease, comfort, tranquillity, etc) after death; I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face (i.e. in the Hereafter) and yearning to meet You without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me). O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of Iman, and make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others). [4]

O Allah! Rectify my religion for me, which is the safeguard of my affairs; rectify my worldly [affairs], wherein is my livelihood; and rectify my Afterlife to which is my return; and make life for me [as a means of] increase in every good and make death for me as a rest from every evil. [Sahih Muslim Number: 2720] [5]

O Allah! Lord of Jibraa’eel, Meekaa’eel and Israafeel, Creator of the heavens and the Earth, The Knower of the seen and the unseen. You judge between Your slaves regarding in that which they differ. Guide me to the truth regarding that in which there is differing, by Your Will. Verily, You guide whomever you will to the straight path.

The scholars say that these creations [i.e. Jibraa’eel, Meekaa’eel, Israafeel, the heavens and the earth] have been specifically mentioned, even though Allah is the Creator of all the creation, just as has been established in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah with regards to the specific mention of every created thing that has a great and mighty status as one of Allah’s creation, such as the statement, “Lord of the Heavens and the Earth”, “Lord of the Supreme Throne”, “Lord of the Angels and Jibreel”, “The Lord of the two Easts (places of sunrise during early summer and early winter) and the Lord of the two Wests (places of sunset during early summer and early winter)”, “The Lord of Humankind”, “The King of Humankind”, “The Only True God of Humankind”, “The Lord of all Created Things”, “The Lord of the Prophets”, ” The Creator of the Heavens and the Earth”, “The Originator of the Heavens and the Earth” etc. All these things and what is similar to them shows Allah’s Greatness, All-encompassing Power and absolute Sovereignty. [6]

In this supplication, one employs the means of seeking Allah’s [love, aid, pleasure, assistance etc] by way of belief and affirmation that He is the Lord – in general and specific – of these three Angels, who have been given a means of giving life. Jibra’eel is given the responsibility to convey the revelation (to the Prophets) by way of which the hearts and souls are given that type of life that necessitates the presence of sound belief in the heart that leads to all righteous deeds. Meekaa’eel is given the responsibility to bring the rain by way of which the earth, the vegetation and animals are given life, and Israafeel is given the responsibility to blow the trumpet by way of which the creation are resurrected after their death. Also employing the means of seeking Allah’s [love, aid, assistance, pleasure etc] by way of belief and affirmation that Allah alone is the Originator of the heavens and earth, meaning, He is their Creator and the one who brought them into existence prior to their non-existence, and that He is the knower of the unseen and the seen- meaning, the hidden and apparent, and due to the fact that He alone is the One Who judges between the servants in that which they differ, so that He guides you to the truth in that which they differ. As for guidance, it is knowledge of the truth together with having the intent to follow the truth, and preferring it over other things. The guided person is that one who acts upon the truth and desires it, and it is the Greatest blessing of Allah bestowed on the servants. We ask Allah to guide us all to the straight path and grant us every good. [7]

“We shall assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth”.

Saeed Ibn Jubair said: “It is (those who do not desire) transgression”.

Ad-Dahhaak said: “It is (those who do not desire) oppression”.

Yahyah Ibn Sallam said: “It is (those who do not desire) shirk” and Muqatil said: “It is (those who do not desire to be) haughty by rejecting Iman”.

“or corruption”.

Ikrimah said: “It is (those who do not desire) disobedience (to Allah and His Messenger)”.

Ibn Sa’ib said: “It is (those who do not) call to the worship of other than Allah”.

“And the good end is for the pious ones”- Meaning, they will have a praiseworthy end.

Beyond Slogans: The True Causes of Every Calamity in the World

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The basis of all sins – major and minor – are three: the heart’s attachment to other than Allah, going along with the intense strength of one’s anger and the intense urge of one’s desires. These three things constitute shirk, injustice and indecency (immorality). Shirk and invoking other than Allah is the heart’s attachment to other than Allah, murder is (related) to going along with one’s intense anger and fornication is going along with the intense urge of one’s desires. And because of this, Allah mentioned the three together in the verse:

And those who invoke not any other ilah (god) along with Allah, nor kill such life as Allah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse. [Al-Furqan. 68]

These three invite to one another – Shirk leads to injustice and indecency (immorality), just as Tawheed and Ikhlas turns a person away from them. Allah, The Most High, said:

Thus it was, that We might turn away from him (Yusuf) evil and indecency. Surely, he was one of Our chosen, guided slaves. [Yusuf. 24]

Meaning: turned him away from infatuation and illegal sexual intercourse.

Injustice leads to Shirk and indecency (immorality), because Shirk is the greatest injustice, just as Tawheed is the greatest justice. Justice is a companion of Tawheed and injustice is a companion of Shirk, and this is why Allah mentioned both together.

As for Tawheed and justice, Allah said:

Allah bears witness that Laa ilaaha illaa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice]. [Aal Imran. 18]

As for injustice and Shirk, Allah said:

Verily, Shirk is great injustice. [Luqmaan. 13]

Indecency (immorality) leads to shirk and injustice, especially when there is a strong desire that cannot be reached except through some type of injustice, such as seeking help through magic and shaytan. And indeed Allah mentioned both fornication and Shirk together in the verse:

The adulterer marries not but an adulteress, or a female polytheist and the adulteress none marries her except an adulterer or a male polytheist [and that means that the man who agrees to marry (have a sexual relation with) a female polytheist, pagan or idolatress) or a prostitute, then surely he is either an adulterer, or a polytheist)]. And the woman who agrees to marry (have a sexual relation with) a male polytheist or an adulterer, then she is either a prostitute or a female polytheist)]. Such a thing is forbidden to the believers [of Islamic Monotheism]. [An-Noor. 3]

These three [Shirk, indecency and injustice] can either be the cause of one another or lead to one another. And this is why whenever Tawheed in the heart is weaker and the Shirk in it is greater, it commits more indecency (immorality), becomes stronger in its attachment to images and infatuated with them. And what is similar to this is the statement of Allah:

So whatever you have been given is but a passing enjoyment for this worldly life, but that which is with Allah (Paradise) is better and more lasting for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and put their trust in their Lord (concerning all of their affairs). And those who avoid the greater sins and indecency, and when they are angry, they forgive. [Ash-Shuraa. 36-37]

Allah informed us that what He has with Him is better for the one who believes in Him and relies upon him, and that is Tawheed. Then Allah said:

And those who avoid the greater sins and indecency.

Meaning, avoid the intense urge towards lowly desires. Then Allah said:

And when they are angry, they pardon.

This opposes the intense strength of anger.

Therefore, Allah mentioned Tawheed, pardon and justice together, and they are that which gathers every good. [1]

Whoever ponders upon the state of affairs of the world will find that every affair of rectification is due to Tawheed, singling out Allah in worship and obedience to His Messenger (Muhammad). And every evil in the world, trial, affliction, scarcity (in livelihood), being overpowered by an enemy and other than that is due to (our) opposition to the Messenger and the call to other than (the way of) Allah and His Messenger. Whoever truly ponders upon this and examines the state of affairs of the world- since its beginning and until the time Allah will take it away and those upon it- he will realise this regarding himself and others, in general and specific (circumstances). And there is no Might or Power except with Allah –The Most High, The Most Great. [2]

Every sin is a legacy inherited from a nation that was destroyed by Allah. Taking more than one is entitled to is a legacy from the people of Shu’ayb, peace be upon him. The corruption and arrogance displayed on earth are inherited from the people of Pharaoh, and the pride and tyranny are legacies from the people of Prophet Hud, peace be upon him. Thus, the sinner is adorned in the garments of these nations that are enemies of Allah. [3]

The pursuit of (vain) desires and prolonged (covetous) hope are the ingredients of every corruption, because the pursuit of (vain) desires blinds (one) from the truth in knowledge and intent, while prolonged (covetous) hope (makes one) forget the afterlife and hinders from making preparations for it. [4]

Everyone who possesses even a modicum of (sound) intellect is aware that the corruption of the world and its destruction are caused by placing human opinion ahead of divine revelation and desires ahead of sound reasoning. These two evil objectives cannot be deeply ingrained in a heart without causing its complete deterioration, nor exist in a nation without entirely corrupting its affairs. [5]

Allah, The Most High, said:

That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness in the earth or corruption. And the good end is for the pious ones. [28:83]

“That home of the hereafter” – Meaning Paradise.

Ibn Sa’ib said: “It is (those who do not) call to the worship of other than Allah”.

“And the good end is for the pious ones”- Meaning, they will have a praiseworthy end. [6]

Verses 15-19 Surah Saba

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Indeed there was for Saba’ a sign in their dwelling place, – two gardens on the right hand and on the left (and it was said to them) “Eat of the provision of your Lord, and be grateful to Him, a fair land and an Oft-Forgiving Lord. But they turned away (from the obedience of Allah), so We sent against them Sail Al-‘Arim (flood released from the dam), and We converted their two gardens into gardens producing bitter bad fruit, and tamarisks, and some few lote-trees. Like this We requited them because they were ungrateful disbelievers. And never do We requite in such a way except those who are ungrateful, (disbelievers). And We placed between them and the towns which We had blessed, towns easy to be seen, and We made the stages (of journey) between them easy (saying): “Travel in them safely both by night and day.” But they said: “Our Lord! Make the stages between our journey longer,” and they wronged themselves, so We made them as tales (in the land), and We dispersed them all, totally. Verily, in this are indeed signs for every steadfast grateful (person).

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Saba was a well-known tribe close to Yemen and their dwelling place was a township called Marib. One of the blessings Allah has bestowed upon the people – in general- and His kindness to them, and to the Arabs in particular, is that in the Qur’an, He narrated the news regarding those who were destroyed and punished, who lived close to the Arabs and they saw its Aathar [i.e. its signs, outcomes], and the people transmitted its news, so that it became easier to (affirm) its truthfulness and closer (to the hearts and minds) as an admonition.

Allah said:

Indeed there was for Saba’ a sign in their dwelling place.

Meaning: The place they lived.

[The word ‘Sign’ in this statement] are the blessings Allah bestowed and averted calamities from them, which necessitated that they worship Allah alone and thank Him. Then Allah [clarified and explained what] this sign was, saying:

“two gardens on the right hand and on the left”..

They used to have a huge valley to which fell abundant rainfall. They built a robust dam that gathered the water -gathered abundant water over there, so they distributed it to their orchards situated on the right and left of the valley. The two big gardens brought forth for them Thimaar [fruits and other produce from trees, plants] sufficient for them, which (made them live in a) state of bliss and happiness. Thus, Allah commanded them to thank Him for bestowing upon them His blessings which He facilitated for them in numerous ways as follows:

The two gardens from which came most of their nourishments, Allah made their dwelling place good- its air was good, it had very little pollution and the land brought provision continuously. Allah promised them that if they are grateful to Him, He will forgive and show them mercy, thus, Allah said: [بَلۡدَةٌ۬ طَيِّبَةٌ۬ وَرَبٌّ غَفُورٌ۬ –  a fair land and an Oft-Forgiving Lord.]

Because Allah knew their need for trade and earnings in the blessed land- and what is apparent is that it was the surrounding towns of Sana as stated by more than one of the Salaf, and it was stated that the blessed land was Sham [Syria], Allah facilitated for them the means through which they got there with great ease, safely and without fear, and to the adjacent towns between them and that blessed land. They encountered no difficulty in carrying provisions and merchandise. Allah said: [وَجَعَلۡنَا بَيۡنَہُمۡ وَبَيۡنَ ٱلۡقُرَى ٱلَّتِى بَـٰرَڪۡنَا فِيہَا قُرً۬ى ظَـٰهِرَةً۬ وَقَدَّرۡنَا فِيہَا ٱلسَّيۡرَۖ – And We placed between them and the towns which We had blessed, towns easy to be seen, and We made the stages (of journey) between them easy.] – Meaning: Distances they were acquainted with and make (good plans for their journeys), so that they did not get lost on their way.

Travel in them safely both by night and day.] – Meaning: With tranquillity during those nights and days, without fear.

This was one of Allah’s perfect blessings which He bestowed upon them by protecting them from fear. However, they turned away from the One Who bestowed those blessings upon them- turned away from worshipping Him alone, thankless for the blessings bestowed upon them and became unconcerned, until they asked and wished that the distance of their journeys between those towns should be made longer.

And they wronged themselves.

Meaning: Due to their disbelief in Allah and being ungrateful to Him for the blessings He bestowed on them, Allah punished them, took (the blessings) away and sent them Sail Al-Arim  [a wild flood] that destroyed their dam, gardens and orchards. Thus, those gardens that had amazing verdant plots and trees that bore fruits were substituted with trees that had no benefit. And because of this, Allah said: [وَبَدَّلۡنَـٰهُم بِجَنَّتَيۡہِمۡ جَنَّتَيۡنِ ذَوَاتَىۡ أُڪُلٍ خَمۡطٍ۬ وَأَثۡلٍ۬ وَشَىۡءٍ۬ مِّن سِدۡرٍ۬ قَلِيلٍ۬ – And We converted their two gardens into gardens producing bitter bad fruit, and tamarisks, and some few lote-trees.] – Meaning: Brought little food that was not enough to suffice them. All these trees are well known and was a just recompense for their evil deeds. (1)

The Dam of Ma’rib

The story of the dam is about the water that used to come to them from between two mountains, combined with water from rain falls and their valleys. Their kings built a huge- strong dam- and the water reached a high level between the two mountains. They planted trees and got the best fruits that could ever be harvested, plentiful and beautiful. A number of the Salaf, including Qatadah mentioned that a woman would walk beneath the trees, carrying a basket or vessel – such as is used to gather fruit – on her head, and that fruit would fall from the trees and fill the basket without any need for her to make the effort to pick the fruit, because they were plentiful and ripe.

This was the dam of Marib, (situated) on a land that was a distance of three days journey from San’a. Others said that there were no flies, mosquitos or fleas, or any kind of vermin on their land – the weather was good and the people were healthy, and Allah took care of them so they that they worship Him alone. Some – including Ibn Abbas, Wahb Bin Munabbih, Qatadah and Ad-Dahhak – said that when Allah wanted to punish them by sending the flood upon them,  he sent animals from the earth to the dam, large rats which made a hole in it. (2) Wahb Bin Munabbih said, “They found written in their scriptures that the dam would be destroyed because of these large rats. So they brought cats for a while, but when the decree came to pass, the rats overwhelmed the cats and went into the dam, making a hole in it, and it collapsed”. (3) Qatadah and others said, “The large rat is the desert rat. They gnawed at the bottom of the dam until it became weak, then the time of the floods came and the waters rushed through the bottom of the valley and destroyed everything in their path- buildings, trees etc!” (4)

Therefore, just as they substituted beautiful thankfulness with ugly ingratitude, those blessings were substituted with the things that have been mentioned. Allah said: [ذَٲلِكَ جَزَيۡنَـٰهُم بِمَا كَفَرُواْۖ وَهَلۡ نُجَـٰزِىٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡكَفُورَ – Like this We requited them because they were ungrateful disbelievers. And never do We requite in such a way except those who are ungrateful, (disbelievers).] -Meaning: We do not recompense with this punishment, except to those who disbelieve in Allah and are thankless for His blessings.

After what befell them, they scattered and split, even though aforetime they were together. Allah made them a story by which others spoke about them – stories people narrated at night, and people used to mention them in the parable, “They scattered like Saba”. Everyone used to speak about what happened to them. However, none learns a lesson regarding their affair, except those about whom Allah said: [إِنَّ فِى ذَٲلِكَ لَأَيَـٰتٍ۬ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ۬ شَكُورٍ۬ – Verily, in this are indeed signs for every steadfast grateful (person).]- Meaning: Those who are patient when facing hardship and extreme difficulties, who persevere for the Sake of Allah, grateful to Allah for His blessings, affirm and acknowledge such blessings, praise the One who bestowed it upon them and utilise them in obedience to Allah. When this type of person hears their story, their behaviour and what happened to them, he knows that the punishment was a recompense for their ungratefulness, and that whoever commits the likes of that which they did will be treated in the same way. And that being grateful to Allah for His blessings is a safeguard for those blessing and it repels punishment; and that Allah’s Messengers spoke the truth regarding what they informed the people and that recompense is true, as its examples are seen in this worldly abode. (5)

Imam Muhammad Ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

It [i.e. Saba] was an Arab tribe named after a grandfather of theirs – a man with many children. It has been reported in a hadith that his children were ten in number- six stayed in Yemen and four in Sham [Syria]. Then they spread in the earth and became numerous.

Indeed there was for Saba’ a sign in their dwelling place: [مَسۡكَنِ – Maskan- is where a person lives with tranquillity, such as houses, groves, orchards etc.] [ءَايَةٌ۬ – Ayah] is a sign that shows something. The sign [i.e. the one mentioned in this verse] demonstrates Allah’s All-Encompassing Power, His blessings and [Perfect] Wisdom.

[جَنَّتَانِ عَن يَمِينٍ۬ وَشِمَالٍ۬ – two gardens on the right hand and on the left.] – Meaning: Gardens filled with trees. And when situated on the right and the left, it possess a marvellous and attractive sight. They were a chain of gardens on the right and left.

[كُلُواْ مِن رِّزۡقِ رَبِّكُمۡ وَٱشۡكُرُواْ لَهُۚ – (and it was said to them) “Eat of the provision of your Lord, and be grateful to Him.] – Meaning: That which Allah has provided for you in the land of Saba.

Allah placed numerous good in these two gardens and benefiting from them was very easy.

[وَٱشۡكُرُواْ لَهُۚ- And thank Him (i.e. Allah).] – Meaning: This is what was sought from them, and thankfulness is connected to the heart, the tongue and the limbs- to acknowledge that those blessings are from Allah, praise Allah for them and perform acts of obedience with your limbs, until you fulfil the obligation of thankfulness in the manner sought from you.

Thank Allah for the blessings He has bestowed on you in the land of Saba. [بَلۡدَةٌ۬ طَيِّبَةٌ۬ – a fair land (i.e. Saba)]. This land had no predators, mosquitoes, flies, fleas, scorpions, snakes etc. A stranger would go past the land and the lice on his clothes would die due to the good air [or weather condition].

[وَرَبٌّ غَفُورٌ۬  – an Oft-Forgiving Lord.] – Meaning: Allah is the Forgiving Lord – the forgiver of sins. Allah granted them these two blessings: the blessing of a good dwelling place, and the blessing of forgiveness, safety from sins and its punishment in the afterlife; and the good land is a means of safety against evils in the worldly life.

This great Ayah shows Allah’s All-Encompassing Power and His Perfect Wisdom in relation to the story of Saba in general, that they were blessed in their dwelling places, orchards, castles and other than that. But when they turned away, the situation changed. In this is a lesson and a sign from many different angles – a sign that demonstrates Allah’s All-Encompassing Power to the one who disobeys Him, a lesson for one who obeys Him, and a sign that shows His [Perfect] Wisdom.

Contemplate this verse and you’ll find the different and various signs in it! It is a sign that shows Allah’s All-Encompassing Power because He created for them those mighty orchards, and then substituted it with something else that was not equal to them in anything. This shows the [Perfect] Wisdom of Allah when He bestowed that good upon them- when they were [obedient, submissive etc] to Him, and then took it away from them when they turned away – turned away from worshipping Him due to pride. This is a sign to take a lesson from by the people who disobey Allah, because in it is a warning that the cessation of Allah’s blessings is due to their sins. It is a sign for those who obey Allah when they take a lesson from it, that as long as they obey Allah, His blessings will be sent to them. Those gardens brought forth its food in abundance and many other ways, as Allah said to them: [كُلُواْ مِن رِّزۡقِ رَبِّكُمۡ – Eat of the provision of your Lord].

It is obligatory to be grateful to Allah because Allah said [وَٱشۡكُرُواْ لَهُۚ – and be grateful to Him.]

Sound intellect obligates gratitude just as it is obligated by the divine revelation. As for its obligation in the Shariah, the verses of the Qur’an commanding it are numerous. As for its obligation as [recognised] by sound intellect, this is because sound intellect necessitates that whoever does good for you, you should thank him. The one who is not thankful to Allah will not be thankful to the people – Meaning: everyone sees that it is wrong when a person does good to you, but you shun him and you do not thank him. All of us know that this is wrong and it is obligatory that you are thankful.

Also, this shows that the lands are divided into two- good and bad, because Allah said: [بَلۡدَةٌ۬ طَيِّبَةٌ۬ – a fair land]. And what type of good is in this land; is it the terrain [i.e. physical features], its air [or weather, climate] or its fruits? Answer: It includes all these three things. Allah said:

The vegetation of a good land comes forth (easily) by the Permission of its Lord, and that which is bad, brings forth nothing but a little with difficulty. Thus do We explain variously the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) for a people who give thanks. [Al-A’raaf. 58]

Affirmation of Allah’s Lordship and His forgiveness, which is found in the statement:

[وَرَبٌّ غَفُورٌ۬ – an Oft-Forgiving Lord].

But they turned away, so We sent against them Sail Al-‘Arim (flood released from the dam), and We converted their two gardens into gardens producing bitter bad fruit, and tamarisks, and some few lote-trees]. [Saba.  16]

But they turned away]- Meaning: They turned away and disbelieved.

So We sent against them Sail Al-‘Arim (flood released from the dam)..

Meaning: Because they turned away, We sent them the flood. This flood drowned their gardens and wealth. This is Allah’s way in dealing with His creation [i.e. the disobedient ones amongst mankind and jinn], just as Allah said [in another verse]:

And Allah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah), that dwelt secure and well content; its provision coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the Favours of Allah (with ungratefulness). So Allah made it taste the extreme of hunger (famine) and fear, because of that (evil, i.e. denying Prophet Muhammad) which they (its people) used to do. [An-Nahl. 112]

And We converted their two gardens into gardens producing bitter bad fruit, and tamarisks, and some few lote-trees.

Meaning: The two previous gardens that had good fruits from which they ate and benefited through trade and other than that.

In summary: When these people turned away and were not thankful to Allah, He sent the flood, thus their wealth was drowned and buildings destroyed. Their two gardens were replaced with two other gardens that were neither equal nor could they be compared to that which they had before.

Benefits Derived From This Noble Verse:

A clarification of the situation of these people- that they replaced the blessings of Allah with disbelief, even though it was incumbent upon them to be thankful to Allah and obey Him after they were given those blessings, but they turned away.

Punishment against those who turn away [from obedience to Allah] is based on that which Allah’s Perfect Wisdom necessitates. And indeed Allah has stated in another verse: [فَكُلاًّ أَخَذۡنَا بِذَنۢبِهِ- So We punished each (of them) for his sins]. Punishment is always given in a manner that fits the deed [i.e. the crime]. Therefore, when these people became ungrateful and disbelieved due to those gardens [given to them], they were replaced with bad gardens.

An affirmation of the ‘Reason or Cause’ that can be derived from the verse: [فَأَعۡرَضُواْ فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا – But they turned away, so We sent against them (i.e. the flood released from the dam)]. Allah sent them [the flood] due to their turning away.

Sins are a reason for the cessation of blessings, because Allah said: [فَأَعۡرَضُواْ فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا – But they turned away, so We sent against them (i.e. the flood released from the dam)]. They were in a state of bliss prior to that, but when they turned away Allah sent them this destructive flood. This has many other testimonies in the Qur’an, and from them is the statement of Allah:

And Allah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah), that dwelt secure and well content; its provision coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the Favours of Allah (with ungratefulness). So Allah made it taste the extreme of hunger (famine) and fear, because of that (evil, i.e. denying Prophet Muhammad) which they (its people) used to do]. [An-Nahl. 112]

Allah said:

And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwa (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes, etc.). Did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment by night while they are asleep? Or, did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment in the forenoon while they play? Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allah. None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are the losers. [Al-A’raaf. 96-99]

Rain is blessing and mercy, but it can be a source of vengeance and punishment, because Allah said: [سَيۡلَ ٱلۡعَرِمِ – Flood released from the dam]. Sail in origin is the gathering of rainwater until it begins to flow. Its origin is good, just as Allah said:

Have they not seen how We drive water (rain clouds) to the dry land without any vegetation, and therewith bring forth crops providing food for their cattle and themselves? Will they not then see?] [As-Sajdah. 27]

This [i.e. rainwater] is good, but sometimes it is a means of punishment.

A clarification of the misguidance of those people who when afflicted with the likes of these calamities, such as floods and its like, it does not have an effect on them and they would say, “This is something that occurs naturally [i.e. it has no connection to the decree of a Creator nor is it due to sins etc]”. Indeed, these floods that cause destruction are nothing else but punishment from Allaah by way of which those punished are put to trial and those upon their way are deterred.

A clarification of Allah’s All-Encompassing Power, because He sent them those floods which drowned their fruits and vegetation. And after [the destruction of those fruits and vegetation], bitter bad fruit, tamarisks and some few lote-trees grew [to replace them]. It was not lote-trees [i.e. in their abundance], rather it was few lote-trees, and their gigantic gardens were replaced with it.

The Perfect Wisdom of Allah in that He replaced those two gardens with another two gardens, because obedience to Allah is light [i.e. guidance], uprightness and success, and it is appropriately recompensed with Allah’s [Favours, Blessings etc]. Sinning is darkness [i.e. misguidance] and corruption, so it is appropriately connected to that bad replacement [i.e. the gigantic gardens that produced abundant good fruits were replaced with gardens that bore few fruits and were bitter].

Like this We requited them (i.e. the people of Saba) due to their disbelief. And never do We requite in such a way except those who are ungrateful, (disbelievers).

Like this We requited them due to their disbelief.

Meaning: Due to their disbelief, We recompense them with this recompense by drowning their wealth, destroyed their buildings and replaced their two gardens [i.e. the two gigantic, amazing and fruitful gardens] with two other gardens [i.e. the ones that produce bitter fruits].

And never do We requite in such a way except those who are ungrateful, (disbelievers).

From The Benefits of This Verse:

Proof [to show that] Allah does not recompense anyone with punishment except due to his deeds, as Allah said: [بِمَا كَفَرُواْۖ  – Due to their disbelief]

An establishment of the Asbaab [Cause or Reason behind this punishment] because the Baa in this statement is Sababiyyah [i.e. the Baa attached to a word to show us the reason or cause behind something]

The difference between the words [يَجْزِى  -Yaj’zee and [يُجَازِى  – Yu’jaa’zee. In this verse Allah said: [وَهَلۡ نُجَـٰزِىٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡكَفُورَ- Like this We requited them due to their disbelief].

[نَجْزِى] refers to good recompense and [نُجَازِى] refers to punishment, and this is what some of the scholars say. So, when referring to good, we say [جَزَى ] and when referring to evil, we say [جَازَى ] (6)

Verses 65-73 Surah Ta Ha

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said regarding the encounter between Musa, peace be upon him, and the magicians:

They said: “O Musa! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw?” [Musa] said: “Nay, throw you (first)!” Then behold, their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast. So Musa conceived a fear in himself. We (Allah) said: “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. “And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never be successful, no matter whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.”

So the magicians fell down prostrate. They said: “We believe in the Lord of Harun and Musa.”

[Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] said: “Believe you in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission? Verily! He is your chief who taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you on the trunks of date-palms, and you shall surely know which of us [I (Fir’aun – Pharaoh) or the Lord of Musa (Allah)] can give the severe and more lasting torment.”

They said: “We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world. “Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults, and the magic to which you did compel us. And Allah is better as regards reward in comparison to your [Fir’aun’s] reward, and more lasting (as regards punishment in comparison to your punishment).” [Taa Haa. 65-73]

They said: “We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us…

Meaning, we do not prefer you over what we have been promised of reward and the closeness to that which we have been shown clear signs, showing that Allah alone is the Lord and true deity to be worshipped- The Most Great, The Only Magnificent One – and every other thing that is worshipped besides Allah and considered as a lord is false. It is not possible that we will prefer you over the One who created and brought us into existence prior to our  state of non-existence; therefore:

“decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world”…

Meaning: do what you promise us, that you will cut off our hands and feet, and crucify us, because it will come to an end regardless of its severity in this worldly life and cannot harm us thereafter when compared to Allah’s punishment for the one who persist upon disbelief, for indeed the punishment will be great and continuous.

This seemed to be their reply to Fir’awn when he said to them:

“And you shall surely know which of us (I (Fir’aun) or the Lord of Musa (Allah) can give the severe and more lasting torment”.

The statement of the magicians shows that it is incumbent upon a sensible person to compare the enjoyment of this life with the enjoyment of the afterlife, and compare the punishment in this life to punishment in the afterlife.

Then Allah said that the magicians said:

“Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults”…

Meaning: so that Allah may forgive us our disbelief and sins, because Iman expiates disbelief, and repentance wipes away one’s previous sins.

“And the magic to which you did compel us”..

Meaning: forgive us the sin of sorcery through which we opposed the truth.

This shows that they did not have a choice in what they did, rather Firawn compelled them. And that which is apparent – and Allah knows best – is that when Musa, peace be upon him, admonished them saying:

“Woe unto you! Invent not a lie against Allah, lest He should destroy you completely by a torment. And surely, he who invents a lie (against Allah) will fail miserably”, it did have an effect on them and this is why they debated (regarding whether Musa was upon truth or not), but Fir’awn compelled and forced them to commit their plot. This is why they said what Firawn said before they arrived:

Verily! These are two magicians (i.e. Musa and Harun). Their object is to drive you out from your land with magic, and overcome your chiefs and nobles.

So they did that which was made up and forced on them. And maybe what settled in their hearts regarding hatred of opposing the truth with falsehood is that which earned them Allah’s Mercy, Iman and the ability to repent.

“And Allah is better as regards reward in comparison to your [Fir’aun’s] reward, and more lasting”.

Meaning: better as reward than what you promised us of status and rank, more lasting in reward and generosity, as opposed to what you [Firawn] say that “And you shall surely know which of us [I (Fir’aun – Pharaoh) or the Lord of Musa (Allah)] can give the severe and more lasting torment]– Meaning, he [Firawn] meant that his punishment is more severe and lasting than Allaah’s punishment.

An Excerpt from Tafseer As-Sadi. Slightly paraphrased
