Acts of obedience; a cause of increase in imaan – Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen said:

Among the causes that bring about an increase in imaan is performing acts of obedience in order to draw closer to Allah The Most High. For indeed imaan then increases by it, in accordance to the excellence of the deed, it’s type and the amount performed. Hence, the better a deed is performed, the greater will be the increase of imaan.

The excellence of a deed is by the ikhlaas [sincerity] and mutaaba’ah [being in agreement with the Sunnah] that it has.

As for the type of deed performed, then indeed obligatory deeds are superior than voluntary ones. Likewise, some acts of obedience are emphasised more than others. Whenever an act of obedience is superior, the resulting increase of imaan will thus be greater.

Greater need for humility of the heart than of the limbs – Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaimeen said:

Humility of the heart is in greater need of being observed than humility of the limbs. That is because the one who has awe of Allah in his heart is [consequently] more observant of Allah The Mighty and Majestic and of His rights.

Hence, it is necessary for humility of the heart to be paid attention to more than humility of the limbs. It is possible for any individual to practise humility of the limbs, even inside his house. Everyone is able to stand praying motionlessly [out of apparent humility], however having a heart that is heedless. Therefore, it [the heart] is the basis. It is that that requires a person to pay attention to, taking constant and absolute care of it.

“No scandalmonger will enter Jannah” Explained by Shaykh bin Baz – rahimahullah –

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Question: Direct us and explain to us, may Allah reward you, the statement of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم: “No scandalmonger shall enter into Al-Jannah”, even though the one who commits this an-nameemah [scandalmongering] might be a Muslim and Mu’min, all praise due to Allah?
Shaikh Ibn Baz: This is from the angle of al-wa’eed [threatening with punishment] in order for the scandalmonger to be threatened. “No scandalmonger shall enter into Al-Jannah” is from the angle of threatening the individual while he is a muwahhid [person of tawheed], a Muslim. If the person is a Muslim and a muwahhid, in such a case entry into Al-Jannah is hoped for him. Great reward is hoped for such a person. However, it is feared that this sin [scandalmongering] may prevent him from entering into Al-Jannah for a certain period of time. And [it is feared] that he may enter into The Fire for a certain period of time. As is the case with all the sinner. For indeed, the sinners are under the will of Allah; if Allah wills, he’ll forgive them and enter them into Al-Jannah from the outset. And if he wills, he’ll punish them in the Fire for a period of time that corresponds to the degree of their sins. Then, after the purification and cleansing of their sins, Allah shall take them out of the Fire [and bring them] to Al-Jannah, as Allah – exalted be He – has said:

“Indeed Allah does not forgive that partners be set up with Him. And He forgives what is less than that to whomsoever He wills” [An-Nisaa: 48]

And it is established in the authentic mutawaatir [unquestionably and unanimously true and accurate] Prophetic traditions that some of the sinners shall enter the Fire and be punished in the Fire to the degree of their sins. And that their periods of time in the Fire shall differ. Their periods of time therein shall vary. So, once they have been purified, they’ll exit the Fire and enter into Al-Jannah.

Therefore, it is necessary to be cautious against all sin, whether it is scandalmongering or anything else. And the scandalmonger is he who carries and conveys the statements of others. He conveys the statements that will bring about trouble. [He/she will say]: “So and so said such about you, so and so a female said such to you”, until he brings about evil. He reports the statement of Zaid to ‘Amr. He will say: “Do you know so and so spoke about you”, “Do you know so and so spoke about you all” “Do you know so and so a female spoke about you all”, until there occurs enmity and malice. This is an-nameemah [scandalmongering].

[As for] al-gheebah [backbiting], it is to mention of your brother what he dislikes. Backbiting is if one says: “So and so does such and such, so and so drinks wine, so and so is disobedient to his parents, so and so breaks the ties of kinship, so and so is bad to his neighbours”, i.e. [a person] mentions things which [the other] dislikes to be mentioned about himself. This is what is called al-gheebah [backbiting] and it is that you mention of your brother what he dislikes.

And the scandalmonger carries and conveys the statement of Zaid to ‘Amr saying: “Do you know so and so says such and such about you”. He informs his neighbours: “Do you know that so and so says such about you all”. So if he says “Do you know that so and so says such about you all”, then to his companions “Do you know that so and so says such about you all”, up until he kindles the fire [of discord] between them. This is an-nameemah [scandalmongering].

We ask Allah for wellbeing.

  Allaah (The Most High) said:

يُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُطْفِئُوا نُورَ اللَّهِ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ

They want to extinguish Allaah’s Light with their mouths (i.e. the Qur’an, the pure Islamic monotheism and the guidance Allaah sent Muhammad with) but Allah will not allow except that His Light should be perfected even though the disbelievers hate (it). [Soorah At-Tawbah: Ayah: 32]

Imaam Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) said: They want to extinguish that which Allaah sent His Messenger with of guidance and the religion of truth, merely by way of their arguments and fabrications; so their example in this (instance) is that of one who wants to extinguish the light of the sun or the moon by way of blowing at (them) and this (person) can never achieve this. [End of quote: See Al-Misbaah Al-Muneer Fee Tahdeeb Tafseer Ibn Katheer]

Imaam as-Saa’di (rahimahullaah) said: The light of Allaah is His Religion (i.e. the religion Allaah chose for mankind),  which He sent the Messengers with and (for which) He revealed the Books.  Allaah called it light, because it gives light in the (midst) of the darkness of ignorance and the false religions because it is knowledge of the truth and action upon truth.  And that which is other than it, is it’s opposite. [End of Quote: see Tayseer Al-Kareem Ar-Rahmaan Fee Tafseer Kalaam Al-Mannaan]

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) warns against Riyaa!

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) said:

“Riyaa is that you perform an act (of worship) and intend that the people see you, praise and commend you. And from that is to perform an act (of worship) in order to be heard, such as reading (the Qur’aan) in order that you are praised and that it is said: ”Indeed, his reading is good and beautiful”; or you perform a lot of Dhikr in order that you are praised and it is said: “He performs a lot of dhikr;” or you enjoin good and forbid evil so that you are praised and commended. This is Riyaa and Shirk Asghar. Therefore, it is obligatory to be mindful of this and that you perform your deeds for the Sake of Allaah alone; and not for the people, their praises and commendations for you; rather you learn in order to act and teach your brothers. And you lead them in the prayer whilst hoping for the reward from Allaah and intending to benefit them, and not out of an intention to be seen or heard.

Causes of decrease in Eemaan – Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen – Rahimahullaah – said:

Among the causes of decrease in imaan is ignorance concerning Allah The Most High. (Ignorance) of His names and attributes, as well as inattention and disregard towards contemplating over His universal and legislative laws. For indeed that is what results in (either) sickness of the heart or it’s death, due to doubts and desires overwhelming it (i.e. the heart). Likewise perpetrating sins decreases one’s imaan, in accordance to the type of sin commited, the degree of the sin, laxity concerning it, as well as the strength or weakness of the factors that invite one to it.
