Insights From a Famous Hadith of Hudaifah – By Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allah preserve him, said:

All praise and thanks be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allāh’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.  To proceed: Indeed, the hadith that will be addressed – in this lecture – is the hadith of Hudhaifah Bin Al-Yaman, may Allah be pleased with him. He said:

People used to ask Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about the good times, but I used to ask him about bad times fearing lest they overtake me.  I said, “O Messenger of Allah! We were in a state of pre-Islamic ignorance and evil, and then Allah brought us this good (time through Islam), is there any evil time after this good one?” He said, “Yes” I asked, “Will there be a good time again after that evil?” He said, “Yes, but therein will be a hidden evil”. I asked, “What will be the evil hidden therein?” He said, “People who will follow ways other than mine and seek guidance other than mine. You will know (their) good points as well as (their) bad points”. I asked, “Will there be an evil time after this good one?” He said, “Yes, when there will be people standing and inviting at the gates of Hell. Whosoever responds to their call they will throw them into the fire”. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Describe them for us”. He said, “They will be a people having the same complexion as ours and speaking our language”. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! What would you suggest if I happened to live in that time?” He said, “You should stick to the main body of the Muslims and their leader”. I said, “If they have no main body and no leader?” He said, “Separate yourself from all these factions, though you may have to eat the roots of trees (in a jungle) until death comes to you and you are in this state”. Islam and the Worldly Sciences – By Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him

We praise and thank Allah for guiding us to the noble Salafi Methodology and acquainting us with both contemporary and earlier scholars of the Ummah. Several years ago, we encountered this enlightening treatise in Arabic. As we explored its contents, we recognised its significant value as a vital reminder, particularly in our capacities as educators in primary and secondary education. This is especially relevant for those teaching physical, natural, and social sciences, as it helps us maintain a clear focus on the Islamic approach to worldly knowledge for ourselves and our students. It is essential that we approach these subjects with a clear intention that aligns our religious goals with worldly aspirations that are pleasing to our Creator. Acknowledging that Islam provides a structured framework for assessing the merits and drawbacks of worldly sciences, grounded in the principles of divine revelation, is crucial. We pray that this treatise serves as a source of reflection and inspiration for both ourselves and our collegues.

The author, Imam Abdur Rahman Bin Nasir As-Sadi, may Allah’s mercy be upon him, addressed various issues with precision in this valuable treatise, which also showcased several social issues during his era.

He began by establishing a robust foundation, affirming that the words, judgments, and decrees of the Creator are indisputable. He then demonstrated how contemporary scientific understanding harmonizes with Islamic principles, bolstering his claims with evidence drawn from divine revelation and citing essential tenets to enhance his discourse. Furthermore, he cautioned against the perils of ignorance, which could lead to unfounded assertions and proposals regarding this matter.

He gracefully continued the dialogue, presenting compelling evidence of the extraordinary traits of the universe. This encompassed the awe-inspiring signs present in the cosmos and its inhabitants, all of which underscore the Creator’s perfect Names and Attributes. He encouraged deep contemplation of creation, drawing parallels from daily experiences such as nourishment, the intricacies of the digestive system, and the brilliance of human intellect. Through these insights, he illustrated how such reflections prompt believers to ponder, in contrast to materialists who fail to grasp these marvels in manner pleasing to their Creator. Moreover, he elaborated on the stages of fetal development, the unique qualities of living beings, and their innate guidance towards realising their purposes. All these phenomena are designed to inspire humanity to recognise their Creator and to harness the wonders of the universe for their own benefit.

He elaborated on the essence of guidance, which is rooted in the Quran and the Sunnah, complemented by the proofs provided to the Messengers. This divine guidance serves as a steadfast compass for both religious and worldly matters, with Islam being the final path. Abandoning this path renders true success in this life and the hereafter elusive. The discussion then shifted to the themes of reflection and consultation. After contemplating the Creator’s guidance, the vastness of the universe, and the extraordinary gifts granted for the benefit of creation, individuals either pursue these blessings or seek counsel when uncertain about the potential advantages and disadvantages. This method is designed to ensure well-being in both religious and worldly affairs, as directed by Allah and His Messenger.

He then addressed the materialists and atheists, whose perspectives on the universe stray from the guidance of the Creator and the path laid out by the Messengers. Their denial of the Creator, His bounties, and the purpose of existence inevitably leads to turmoil, disorder, and trials in this life, along with ruin in the afterlife. Following the resolution of this issue and the adept clarification of certain misconceptions held by materialists, the Imam redirects attention to the significance of righteousness and reform. These principles are essential for fostering positive human relationships, as explicitly detailed in divine law. At the heart of this righteousness lies the highest purpose, rooted in the purity of Islamic Monotheism and adherence to the path of the Messenger, which together form the bedrock of genuine well-being and social harmony.

Furthermore, he cited verses from the Qur’an to illuminate some of the general and specific matters of welfare, addressing both religious and worldly matters, thereby illustrating that the Religion comprehensively encompasses all elements essential to human well-being. At this juncture, it became imperative to draw a clear line between those who reject this sacred path and the faithful adherents. He criticised those who seek to diminish the religion by branding it as outdated, while also shedding light on various societal challenges, including the rule of law, punitive measures, and the social framework as prescribed by divine guidance, juxtaposing these with the adverse effects of deviating from such principles. Moreover, he delved into the subject of intellectual freedom and the potential repercussions that may ensue when it lacks the direction of divine wisdom from the Creator, who alone possesses perfect knowledge into what is truly beneficial or harmful for humanity across all facets of existence.

As the treatise approached its conclusion, the Imam emphasised a detrimental perspective held by materialists: their rejection of Al-Qadaa Wal-Qadar and their attempt to sever the connection between cause and effect from the Will and decree of the Almighty Creator. By reflecting on the opening of the treatise, one can discern how the Imam articulated that everything stated by the Creator embodies absolute reality, truth, and flawless guidance. He also vividly illustrated the Creator’s all-encompassing Will, perfect knowledge, wisdom, and capability in all that He has fashioned. Thus, a clear link emerges between the initial discussion of the Creator’s omnipotent Will and the concluding topic of Al-Qadaa Wal-Qadar. The materialists’ denial of this fundamental truth equates to a rejection of the Creator, His Actions, His signs, His blessings, and His guidance. In this light, the Imam addresses both the harmful consequences of dismissing Al-Qadaa Wal-Qadar and some of the misconceptions that materialists hold regarding this mighty pillar of Iman.

As the materialists boast of their achievements in worldly matters without expressing gratitude to the Creator for His boundless bounties, the Imam underscored the essence of authentic progress, moral reform, and intellectual advancement. Finally, he made a clear distinction between those worthy of emulation and those who are not, while also drawing attention to the grave peril posed by knowledge associated with those who have turned away from the Creator. These individuals, enamored by their earthly triumphs, mock divine guidance and hinder humanity from the righteous path of Allah. It is indeed challenging to fully encapsulate this analysis; rather, it is up to the reader to form their own conclusions as they engage with this treatise and reflect upon its content. We beseech Allah to bestow upon us awakened hearts that yearn for goodness and to enhance this desire throughout our lives. Amin.

Lastly, to aid the reader, we have included titles in the translation to clearly delineate the various topics discussed by the Imam. The Arabic text, even without headings or subtitles, is inherently clear to the reader.

And Allah knows best

Look how they lie against themselves!

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Exalted, said:

And on the Day when We shall gather them all together, We shall say to those who ascribed partners in worship (with Us): “Where are your partners (false deities) whom you used to assert (as partners in worship with Allah)?” There will then be (left) no excuses or statements or arguments for them but to say: “By Allah, our Lord, we were not those who ascribed others in worship with Allah.” Look how they lie against themselves! But the (lie) which they invented will disappear from them. [Al-An’am 22-24]

“Look” with astonishment their condition; “How they lie against themselves”- Meaning, they tell a lie that ultimately lead to their own detriment, causing them immense harm. “But the (lie) which they invented will disappear from them”, such as those whom they ascribed as partners with Allah, and Exalted is Allah above this. (1)

“Look how they have lie against themselves,” through false excuses and declaring themselves innocent of Shirk. “But the (lie) which they invented will disappear from them” – Meaning, depart and cease, referring to the idols they once hoped for their intercession and support, but all of that proves futile on that day. (2)

It’s attractive, but temporary

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Therefore withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who turns away from Our Reminder (this Qur’an) and desires nothing but the life of this world. That is what they could reach of knowledge. Verily, your Lord it is He Who knows best him who goes astray from His Path, and He knows best him who receives guidance. [Surah An-Najm. Aayaat 29-30]

When it is the case that this is the abiding behaviour of these polytheists – that they do not have any aim to follow the truth; instead their only aim and intent is that which their souls desire, thus, Allah [The Exalted] commanded His Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] to turn away from the one who has turned away from Allah’s Reminder- the Wise Reminder, the Great Qur’aan and the Noble News. They turn away from the beneficial subject matters and do not want except the worldly life, and this is the beginning and end of their desire. It is well known that a servant of Allah does not act except for something he wants, so their deeds are limited to the world, its pleasures and desires. This is where their knowledge stops and its purpose. As for those who believe in the Hereafter- those who testify to the truthfulness of it, the people of sound understanding and sound intellect, their utmost concern and desire is the home of the afterlife. Their sciences are the most virtuous and the loftiest, and that is knowledge taken from the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger. Allah knows who deserves guidance and guides him; and the one who is not deserving of it, he is left to himself and forsaken, thus, he deviates from the path of Allah. And due this due Allah said:

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ

Verily, your Lord it is He Who knows best him who goes astray from His Path, and He knows best him who receives guidance – Meaning, Allaah [The Exalted] places blessings exactly where it should be. (1)

Allah (The Most High) informed us that the believer amongst the people of Pharaoh said:

يَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَتَـٰعٌ۬ وَإِنَّ ٱلۡأَخِرَةَ هِىَ دَارُ ٱلۡقَرَارِ

O my people! Truly, this life of the world is nothing but a (quick passing) enjoyment, and verily, the Hereafter that is the home that will remain forever”. [Surah Ghaafir. Verse 39]

Mujahid [may Allaah have mercy upon him] narrated that Abdullah Ibn Umar [may Allaah have mercy upon him and his father] said: Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] took hold of my shoulder and said, “Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler”. The sub narrator added: Ibn Umar Used to say, “If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death”. (2)

The Muslim is like a stranger in this worldly life; the stranger is one residing in a country other than his country. The worldly life is not the Muslim’s permanent place of residence; instead the Muslim’s permanent place of residence is paradise. He is in this worldly life to work for entry into Paradise. He takes what is needed from this world to aid him work for entry into paradise.

The Muslim is like a traveler in this worldly life: The traveler takes rest during his journey and then carries on travelling. He does not reside permanently in that place he stopped to take a rest. In the life of this world the Muslim is that traveler. In reality he is not a permanent resident in the worldly life because his time in it is very little. His nights and days take him towards the afterlife.

What is befitting the Muslim with regards to the days, nights, and his health etc! If you reach the morning do not delay good deeds till in the evening because it maybe that you will not reach the evening. If you reach the evening do not delay good deeds till the morning because it maybe that you will not reach the morning. Do not delay repentance and righteous deeds till another time.

As long as a person is in a state of good health and wellbeing, he is able to perform fasting, the night prayer etc; but when he becomes sick he is not able to perform fasting, the night prayer etc. Therefore, as long as Allaah has given you good health, then hasten towards righteous actions because a time will come in which you will be unable to perform them-either due to illness, old age, or senility. Prepare for death and what is to come after it. Allaah gave you this life in order that you busy yourself with what will benefit you in the afterlife. So do not spend your life in play and jest. (3)

Imam As-Sadi [may Allah have mercy upon him] said: The sensible person is in a position to have the Baaqiyaat As-Saalihaat as provision [i.e. the good righteous deeds that last and are better in the sight of Allah for reward and better in respect of hope in the Hereafter] together with his share in the worldly life with ease- by seeking aid in going out in the morning and midday and something of the night time. This is the foundation upon which he places his worldly affairs and the means to [accomplishing them]. And even when such [affairs] come to him late at night, he would pray and seek aid from his Lord and asks for that which brings about goodness in his religious and Worldly affairs.

He begins his day with good – recitation of the Qur’aan and acts of worship- to which one devotes himself in the morning; performs the five daily prayers in their earliest times and that which Allah makes easy for him to perform of good deeds, such as (optional) prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance of Allah, seeking knowledge and other than that. He engages his tongue in the Remembrance of Allah and in seeking forgiveness.

He pursues the means by way of which one seeks his livelihood such as trade, production of goods, farming and what is similar to them, whilst seeking the aid of his Lord in that. He suffices himself with the permissible means and turns away from that which Allaah has made unlawful. The intent behind this is to fulfil the individual obligations; to be (upon) self-sufficiency and having little or no need of the creation. If he does this or something closer to it, the result will be goodness and he will gain abundant reward [for the afterlife]. Also he does not forget his [lawful] share in the worldly life and it may be that Allah will bless him with contentment, which is true richness by way of which a good life is attained.(4)

The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be upon him] said: “What is the world to me? What am I to the world? Verily, the example of this world and myself is that of a rider who seeks shade under a tree, then he moves on and leaves it behind”. [Reported by Imaam Ahmad 3701 and others]

The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “What is the example of this worldly life in comparison to the Hereafter other than one of you dipping his finger in the sea? Let him see what he brings forth”. [Reported by Imaam Muslim 2858]

Allah [The Most High] said:

Verily the likeness of (this) worldly life is as the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, so by it arises the intermingled produce of the earth of which men and cattle eat until when the earth is clad with its adornments and is beautified, and its people think that they have all the powers of disposal over it, Our Command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a clean-mown harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday! Thus do We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, laws, etc.) in detail for the people who reflect. Allah calls to the home of peace (i.e. Paradise, by accepting Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds and abstaining from polytheism and evil deeds) and guides whom He wills to a Straight Path.[Yunus. 24-25]

Allah [The Most High] said:

And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is Able to do everything. Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds (five compulsory prayers, deeds of Allah’s obedience, good and nice talk, remembrance of Allah with glorification, praises and thanks, etc.), that last, are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope. [Al-Kahf. 45-46]

Allah [The Most High] said:

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment. [Al-Hadeed. 57]

Allah [The Most High] said:

Beautified for men is the love of things they covet; women, children, much of gold and silver (wealth), branded beautiful horses, cattle and well-tilled land. This is the pleasure of the present world’s life; but Allah has the excellent return (Paradise with flowing rivers, etc.) with Him. Say: “Shall I inform you of things far better than those? For Al-Muttaqun (the pious) there are Gardens (Paradise) with their Lord, underneath which rivers flow. Therein (is their) eternal (home) and Azwajun Mutahharatun (purified mates or wives) [i.e. they will have no menses, urine, or stool, etc.], And Allah will be pleased with them. And Allah is All-Seer of the (His) slaves”. [Aal Imraan. 14-15]

Allah [The Most High] said:

 وَفَرِحُواْ بِٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَمَا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا فِى ٱلۡأَخِرَةِ إِلَّا مَتَـٰعٌ۬

And they rejoice in the life of the world, whereas the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter is but a brief passing enjoyment. [Ar-Rad. 26]

Allah [The Most High] said:

Verily, those who hope not for their meeting with Us, but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present world, and those who are heedless of Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.); Those, their abode will be the Fire, because of what they used to earn. [Yunus. 7-8]

Allah [The Most High] said:

O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that when you are asked to march forth in the Cause of Allah (i.e. Jihad) you cling heavily to the earth? Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But little is the enjoyment of the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter. [At-Tawbah. 38]

Allah [The Most High] said:

أَفَرَءَيۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِينَ
ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡہُم مَّا كَانُواْ يُمَتَّعُونَ

Tell Me, if We do let them enjoy for years; and afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised! All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them. [Surah Ash-Shu’araa. Verses 205-207]

Allah [The Most High] said:

وَيَوۡمَ يَحۡشُرُهُمۡ كَأَن لَّمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا سَاعَةً۬ مِّنَ ٱلنَّہَارِ يَتَعَارَفُونَ بَيۡنَہُمۡ‌ۚ

And on the Day when He shall gather (resurrect) them together, (it will be) as if they had not stayed (in the life of this world and graves, etc.) but an hour of a day. They will recognise each other. [Surah Yunus. Verse 45]

Allah [The Most High] said:

كَأَنَّہُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَ مَا يُوعَدُونَ لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا سَاعَةً۬ مِّن نَّہَارِۭ‌ۚ بَلَـٰغٌ۬‌ۚ فَهَلۡ يُهۡلَكُ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ

On the Day when they will see that (torment) with which they are promised (i.e. threatened, it will be) as if they had not stayed more than an hour in a single day. (O mankind! This Qur’an is sufficient as) a clear Message (or proclamation to save yourself from destruction). But shall any be destroyed except the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah)]. [Al-Ahqaaf. 35]

Allah [The Most High] said:

They ask you (O Muhammad) about the Hour, – when will be its appointed time? You have no knowledge to say anything about it; To your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof? You (O Muhammad) are only a warner for those who fear it; The Day they see it, (it will be) as if they had not tarried (in this world) except an afternoon or a morning. [An-Naazi’aat. 42-46]

Allah [The Most High] said:

وَيَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يُقۡسِمُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ مَا لَبِثُواْ غَيۡرَ سَاعَةٍ۬‌ۚ

And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) will swear that they stayed not but an hour. [Ar-Rum. 55]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

He (Allah) will say: “What number of years did you stay on earth?” They will say: “We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep account.” He (Allah) will say: “You stayed not but a little, if you had only known! [Al-Mu’minoon. 112-114]

Allah [The Most High] said:

The Day when the Trumpet will be blown (the second blowing): that Day, We shall gather the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, etc.) Zurqa: (blue or blind eyed with black faces); In whispers will they speak to each other (saying): “You stayed not longer than ten (days).” We know very well what they will say, when the best among them in knowledge and wisdom will say: “You stayed no longer than a day!” [Ta Ha. 102-104]

And Allah’s Aid is sought and upon Him we place our reliance! (5)

The Importance of Truthfulness – By Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali [Part 9]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khali, may Allah preserve him, continued…

Due to his profound happiness at this repentance and his deep appreciation for this blessing, he emphasised that through the behaviour of one who is grateful for Allah’s blessings upon him, thus he said: “O Allah’s Messenger! Because of the acceptance of my repentance I will give up all my wealth as alms for the Sake of Allah and His Messenger”. The enticing wealth that was one of the reasons behind him not participating in Jihad serves as further evidence of the sincerity of his repentance and his diligence in that. Then Allah’s Messenger- the compassionate and merciful, advised him to retain a portion of his wealth. So, what did he do? He relinquished his wealth at Madinah, which withheld him from participating in military expedition in the path of Allah, while he retained the better part of that distant wealth (acquired at Khaybar), which perhaps had no connection to withholding him from Jihad. He expressed a strong reason for his salvation, which – in his view- was solely one reason that saved him from utter destruction. He stated, “O Messenger of Allah, indeed Allah saved me for telling the truth; so it is a part of my repentance not to tell but the truth as long as I am alive”. By Allah Grace in fulfilling what he promised to the Messenger, peace be upon him, and in what kab saw as essential to his repentance to this day, it is the best of what he has stated: “By Allah, I do not know anyone of the Muslims whom Allah has helped to speak the truth more than me. Since I have mentioned that truth to Allah’s Messenger till today, I have never intended to tell a lie”.

What (an exemplary example regarding) fear of Allah (associated) with truthfulness and the nobility of the truthful ones that is stand in stark contrast to the (behaviour) of the liars, and a decisive (proof) against the liars in every era and place. How can not be the case when it (lying) is one of the greatest call to disbelief and hypocrisy, and its least (harmful) circumstance is that it is one of the stations of hypocrisy, may Allah protect us from it and from all that displeases Him. Then he spoke about this blessing which Allah bestowed upon: “”By Allah, I do not know anyone of the Muslims whom Allah has helped to speak the truth more than me. Since I have mentioned that truth to Allah’s Messenger till today, I have never intended to tell a lie. I hope that Allah will also save me (from telling lies) the rest of my life”. Then Allah revealed to His Messenger:

And (He did forgive also) the three [who did not join the Tabuk expedition (whom the Prophet SAW)] left (i.e. he did not give his judgement in their case, and their case was suspended for Allah’s Decision) till for them the earth, vast as it is, was straitened and their ownselves were straitened to them, and they perceived that there is no fleeing from Allah, and no refuge but with Him. Then, He accepted their repentance, that they might repent (unto Him). Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful. O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds). [Al-Tawbah 118-119]

Kab said: By Allah, Allah has never bestowed upon me, apart from His guiding me to Islam, a Greater blessing than the fact that I did not tell a lie to Allah’s Messenger which would have caused me to perish as those who have told a lie perished, for Allah described those who told lies with the worst description He ever attributed to anybody else. Allah said:

They will swear by Allah to you (Muslims) when you return to them, that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them. Surely, they are Rijsun [i.e. Najasun (impure) because of their evil deeds], and Hell is their dwelling place, – a recompense for that which they used to earn. They (the hypocrites) swear to you (Muslims) that you may be pleased with them, but if you are pleased with them, certainly Allah is not pleased with the people who are Al-Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). [al-Tawbah 95-96]

This is the outcome for the liars, even if their lie was flattery and excuses. The forgiveness sought by the Messenger for them did not benefit them in anything in their lives nor after their deaths. Allah said:

Whether you (O Muhammad) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness for them, (and even) if you ask seventy times for their forgiveness, Allah will not forgive them. [al-Tawbah 80]

So no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them. [Al-Mud-dath-thir 48]

There is a mighty moral lesson here for those who do not purify themselves through monotheism, Iman, truthfulness, and good deeds. Among those deceitful liars, some may have believed that their lies and trickery will lead to the Prophet’s forgiveness and mercy, saving them from Allah wrath and humiliation in this life and the hereafter. However, Allah has shattered their hopes and humiliated them in this worldly life and the Hereafter. The Prophet’s intercession did not benefited them at all. The Qur’an made this reality clear in in Surah al-Tawbah and other than it, and the Prophet emphasised through his statement to the Quraysh, addressing each clan and individual: “Redeem yourselves from Allah; I cannot protect you from Him in any way.”

Liars should be cautious at all times and in all places with regards to their Iman, beliefs, statements, and testimonies, as this lying may lead them to the abyss of destruction that has engulfed those liars before them.

And there is a lesson and good news for those who are truthful in their Iman, Islam, good deeds, statements, and testimonies, regarding salvation from destruction, as Kab and his companions, may Allah be pleased with them, attained salvation through truthfulness in a situation that tempted those with weak Iman and souls to lie. Allah said:

This is a Day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise) – they shall abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them and they with Him. That is the great success (Paradise). [Al-Ma’idah 119]

Narrated Talha bin Ubaidullah, may Allah be pleased with him: A man from Najd with unkempt hair came to Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and we heard his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying, till he came near and then we came to know that he was asking about Islam. Allah’s Messenger said, “You have to offer prayers perfectly five times in a day and night (24 hours).” The man asked, “Is there any more (prayers)?” Allah’s Messenger replied, “No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil prayers (you can).” Allah’s Messenger further said to him: “You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramadan.” The man asked, “Is there any more fasting?” Allah’s Messenger replied, “No, but if you want to observe the Nawafil fasts (you can.)” Then Allah’s Messenger further said to him, “You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity).” The man asked, “Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?” Allah’s Messenger replied, “No, unless you want to give alms of your own.” And then that man retreated saying, “By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this.” Allah’s Messenger said, “If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will be granted Paradise).” [Al-Bukhari 46]

It is reported in Sahih Muslim on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: We were forbidden that we should ask anything (without the genuine need) from the Holy Prophet. It, therefore, pleased us that an intelligent person from the dwellers of the desert should come and asked him (the Prophet) and we should listen to it. A man from the dwellers of the desert came and said: “Muhammad, your messenger came to us and told us your assertion that verily Allah had sent you (as a prophet)”. He (the Prophet) said: “He told the truth”. He (the bedouin) said: “Who created the heaven?” He (the Prophet) replied: “Allah”. He (the bedouin again) said: “Who created the earth?” He (the Prophet) replied: “Allah”. He (the bedouin again) said: “Who raised these mountains and who created in them whatever is created there?” He (the Prophet) replied: “Allah”. Upon this he (the bedouin) remarked: “By Him Who created the heaven and created the earth and raised mountains thereupon, has Allah (in fact) sent you?” He (the Prophet) said: “Yes”. He (the bedouin) said: “Your messenger also told us that five prayers (had been made) obligatory for us during the day and the night”. He (the Prophet) remarked: “He told you the truth”. He (the bedouin) said: “By Him Who sent you, is it Allah Who ordered you about this (i. e. prayers)?” He (the Prophet) said: “Yes”. He (the bedouin) said: “Your messenger told us that Zakat had been made obligatory in our riches”. He (the Prophet) said. “He has told the truth”. He (the bedouin) said: “By Him Who sent you (as a prophet), is it Allah Who ordered you about it (Zakat)?” He (the Prophet) said: “Yes”. He (the bedouin) said: “Your messenger told us that it had been made obligatory for us to fast every year during the month of Ramadan”. He (the Prophet) said: “He has told the truth”. He (the bedouin) said: “By Him Who sent you (as a prophet), is it Allah Who ordered you about it (the fasts of Ramadan)?” He (the Prophet) said: “Yes”. He (the bedouin) said: “Your messenger also told us that pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House (of Ka’bah) had been made obligatory for him who is able to undertake the journey to it”. He (the Prophet) said: “Yes”. The narrator said that he (the bedouin) set off (at the conclusion of this answer, but at the time of his departure) remarked: “By Him Who sent you with the Truth, I would neither make any addition to them nor would I diminish anything out of them”. Upon this the Prophet remarked: “If he were true (to what he said) he must enter Paradise”. [Sahih Muslim 12]

These two intelligent questioners have been blessed by Allah with the gift of sound intellect, insight, and the ability to ask good questions, especially the latter of the two. It is said that he is Dhaman ibn Thalabah al-Hudhali. The first one asked Allah’s Messenger about the tenets of Islam, and the Prophet responded with what Allah has commanded His servants regarding the pillars of this religion after the two testimonies of faith, as the questioner appeared to be a Muslim. Thus, he was informed that Islam consists of these obligations.

The questioner acknowledged this and committed to it because he wanted to know if there is anything additional he must do beyond what he has mentioned regarding these pillars. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, told him that there is nothing more required unless he chooses to perform voluntary acts. When the Prophet distinguished between obligatory acts and voluntary ones, the individual swore by Allah that he would neither add to nor subtract from those obligations. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, responded by giving him and the Ummah glad tidings of great rewards for those who fulfill these obligations properly: “He will succeed if he is truthful,” meaning that his actions must align with his words. His success is contingent upon his honesty in both speech and action, and he is blessed for that..

The second questioner had a deeper and broader question than the first. Muhammad Ibn Ismail al-Asfahani al-Salafi, the author of “at-Tareer” said: “This is from fine manner of asking questions by this man’s and the elegance of its structure. He first sought confirmation of the truthfulness of the messenger sent by the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to invite them to Islam, asking if he was indeed sent by Allah. The Prophet affirmed this. Then, he asked about the Creator of the heavens and the earth and who established the mountains, as he, like other Arabs, believed in the oneness of Allah’s Lordship.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, responded by saying: “Allah, Allah, Allah” in all of that. He then confirmed everything that the messenger of Allah’s Messenger conveyed to them regarding the religious acts of Islam, including prayer, almsgiving, and fasting, while the Messenger affirmed: “He (i.e. the one I sent to convey the message) spoke the truth, spoke the truth”, and so on. When the Messenger of Allah finished answering the man’s questions, the man said: “By the One who sent you with the truth, I will neither add to them nor take away from them.” The Messenger of Allah said: “If he is truthful, he will enter Paradise.”

Verily the fruits of truthfulness are great for the truthful person; the one trutrhful in belief, speech, and the application of the righteous actions based on what Allah and His Messenger have ordained. These are some of the fruits of truthfulness that guide – in this life – towards righteousness, which encompasses all good qualities, and enables one to attain high stations from Allah, residing eternally in gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, having achieved the greatest goal. And above these stations is Allah’s Pleasure whose fruits are guidance towards righteousness and ultimately to paradise. Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Verily, truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to be truthful and encourages honesty until he is recorded with Allah as truthful”.

From its fruits is to attain the success of receiving Allah’s Pleasure, then success in attaining paradise, where rivers flow beneath. This benefit becomes evident and manifest, Allah said:

Allah will say: “This is a Day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise) – they shall abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them and they with Him. That is the great success (Paradise). [Al Maidah 119]

It is reported in Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri who said that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said that Allah will say to the people of paradise: “O the people of Paradise!” They will say, ‘Labbaik, O our Lord, and Sa`daik, and all the good is in Your Hands!’ Allah will say, “Are you satisfied?’ They will say, ‘Why shouldn’t we be satisfied, O our Lord as You have given us what You have not given to any of Your created beings?’ He will say, ‘Shall I not give you something better than that?’ They will say, ‘O our Lord! What else could be better than that?’ He will say, ‘I bestow My Pleasure on you and will never be angry with you after that”. [Al-Bukhari 7518]

Congratulations to the truthful for this great success, eternal bliss, everlasting Pleasure of Allah, and eternal life. May Allah make us among them through His grace, favour, and mercy. Indeed, He is compassionate, merciful, generous, and kind. May peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

Written by the one in need of Allah’s pardon and forgiveness.

All in the fire except one

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Abdul Aziz Bin Baz, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked: “What is the intent behind the statement of the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, statement when he spoke about the Ummah in the hadith: “All of them (the sects) are in the fire except one” and what is that one?. Also, will all the other 72 (deviant) sects be in the fire for eternity? Benefit us”.

Response: The prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “The Jews split into 71 sects, meaning all of them are astray and their affair ruined, except one. The Christians split into 72 sects, meaning all of them are astray and their affair ruined, except one. And this Ummah will split into 73 sects- all of them in the fire, except one. This one group is Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah [those who firmly adhere to the authentic Prophetic Sunnah and are united upon that] – the companions of the Prophet and those who follow them exactly in faith, the adherents to pure Islamic monotheism and sound faith.

As for the other 72 sects that have been threatened with the fire, among them is one who is a disbeliever (a), among them is one who is a sinner and among them is one about whom it is established with clear evidence that he is an innovator in religious affairs. So, the one – among them – that dies in a state of disbelief (b) will be in the fire for eternity, the one that dies in a state of adherence to religious innovation that is lesser than major disbelief (c) or sins is under the will of Allah, while still threatened with the fire. So, based on this it is known that not all of them are disbelievers, but rather among them is a disbeliever and other than him among the sinners and the innovators in religious affairs. [1]

May Allah bless and reward our beloved brother Zulfikaar for sharing the Arabic text Imam Ibn Baz’s clarification Aameen

——————————————–

[a and b]: NB: Takfeer – declaring that a Muslim left the fold of Islaam is a judgement that can only be given by the upright scholars and none else.  https://www.manhaj.com/manhaj/articles/obkwf-takfir-and-the-excuse-of-ignorance-shaykh-saalih-al-fawzaan.cfm

[c]: NB: All innovations in the religion are evil, but there are those that exit a person from the fold of Islam (Bida’atul Mukaffirah) and those that do not exit a person from the fold of Islam (Bida’atul Mufassiqah). Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Mad’khalee [may Allaah preserve him] was asked whether there is a difference between Bidah Al-Mukaffirah and Bidah Al-Mufassiqah; so he replied that there is Bidah Mukaffirah, such as rejecting the Ruyah (i.e. denying that the believers will see Allaah in the afterlife); rejecting Allaah’s Uluww [i.e. denying that Allaah is above his creation –Allaah ascended over the Throne in a way that benefits his majesty)]; invoking other than Allaah; offering slaughtered sacrifice (i.e. animals) to other than Allaah etc. These are affairs of Bidah Al-Mukaffirah (the bidah that is tantamount to disbelief). But we do not make Takfeer of the people who commit this type of Bidah until we establish the proofs against them. That is because some of them (i.e. the people who fall into these affairs) carry doubts and are far away from the era of Prophethood and its light (i.e. guidance). So they fall into the likes these innovations. Rejecting the Ruyah is disbelief; rejecting Allaah’s Uluww is disbelief; the saying that the Qur’aan is created is disbelief-major disbelief. But this person, -[who testifies that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah, and he prays, observes fasting, wants paradise and believes in that] -received the doubts of the people of falsehood, so he falls into the likes of these affairs (i.e. these innovations that are tantamount to disbelief). So we say to him: You have fallen into disbelief and the evidence is this and this, and we clarify for him. So if Allaah grants him Tawfeeq and he returns to the truth, then all praise is due to Allaah. But if not, we declare him a disbeliever after establishing the proofs against him. As for Bidah Al-Mufassiqah it is other than this (i.e. it is not at the level of that which is tantamount to disbelief)…

Facilitated with all the means to attain nobility, but chooses to degrade himself

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah [The Most High] said:

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ
ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَاهُ أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍ

We have certainly created man in the best stature ‘in form, appearance, balance and strength, coupled with innate disposition and the power of reason. Then ‘due to his disbelief and opposing his innate disposition’, We return him to the lowest of the low in physical location, the Hellfire. Except those who believe and work righteous deeds, for they ‘due to their gratitude for being created in the best stature by worshipping Allah alone and obeying Him’, will have an unending, continuous reward ‘in Paradise, in the afterlife. [at-Teen 4-6]

Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Allah created the human perfectly with different body parts and organs, and did not leave anything the human needs – externally and internally. Despite all these great blessings necessitating that they show gratitude to Allah, the majority of them are not thankful; rather, they are preoccupied in play and (blameworthy) amusement. Indeed, they bring themselves to the lowest level through deeds that degrade one’s manners, thus, Allah will reduce them to the lowest of the low – the lowest part of the hell fire, the place of the disobedient ones and those who turn away from their Lord. The only ones who will be saved from this are those whom Allah has blessed with Iman, righteous action, virtuous and lofty manners.

Strive for the Hereafter and Do Not Procrastinate – Shaykh Khalid Adh-Dhufayri

O servants of Allah! Remember that this abode is that of trials, tribulations and tests, so walk the path to the afterlife and beware of procrastination and negligence. Do not be among those who hope for (reward) in the afterlife without deeds, delaying repentance because of continued eagerness for this world and preoccupied with it. Indeed, the appointed time of death is hidden and death comes suddenly, so do not be deceived by Allah’s Forbearance because Allah gives respite but does not forget, and indeed Paradise and Hellfire are closer to you than your shoelaces.

[6] Adherence to The Prophetic Methodology Is The Only Path to Safety and Sound Reformation When Decadence Occurs – [By Well known and Highly Respected God-fearing Erudite Saudi Scholar – (Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Hudhaifah Bin al Yamaan [may Allaah be pleased with him] said: ‘’People used to ask the Messenger of Allaah [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] about the good times, but I used to ask him about bad times fearing lest they overtake me. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah! We were in a state of pre-Islamic ignorance and evil, and then Allaah brought us this good [time through Islam], is there any evil time after this good one?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I asked, ‘Will there be a good time again after that evil?’ He said, ‘Yes, but therein will be a hidden evil.’ I asked, ‘What will be the evil hidden therein?’ He said, ‘[That time will witness the rise of] the people who will follow ways other than mine and seek guidance other than mine. You will know [their] good points as well as [their] bad points.’ I asked, ‘Will there be an evil time after this good one?’ He said, ‘Yes.
