Q: What is the ruling on “calling” back the souls/spirits of the deceased [to communicate with them]? And is that a type of magic?
A: No doubt calling upon souls to return [and communicate with] is a type of magic, or fortune-telling. These souls are not the souls of the deceased – as they claim – rather they are shayaateen [devils] who imitate the actual deceased and say, “I am the soul/spirit of such and such, and [in reality] he is from the devils, so this [activity] is not permissible.
The souls of the deceased cannot be retrieved [and communicated with] because they are in the grasp of Allah, “It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.” [Surah az-Zumar: 42]
So the souls are not as they claim, that they come and go – rather that is at the disposal of Allah. Hence calling upon and “retrieving” the souls/spirits of the deceased is falsehood, and it is a type of magic or fortune-telling.”

[Translator’s note: Such activites that have become widespread in society are clearly impermissible; regrettably many have fallen into such affairs through “curiosity”, falling into observing and viewing “shows” online or elsewhere of so called “miracle” individuals who have the ability to “cross-over” or “communicate” with the souls of the deceased.
In such “shows” they call upon names and descriptions within the audience claiming the “presence” of the deceased soul is speaking to them…all such affairs are impermissible. We heard from our scholars stating that the one who views such magic shows, “crossing-over” shows and their likes falls into the narrations of the prohibition of actually visiting the magicians or fortune-tellers in person, hence the threats are applicable to him even though he may be viewing all that from the comfort of his home out of “curiosity only”, therefore great caution is required to be exercised, may Allah protect us and you].

They are those who proceed upon the way of the Companions and those who followed them in righteousness, in clinging to the Book and the Sunnah, biting onto that with their molar teeth, and letting them (i.e., the Qur’aan and the Sunnah) take precedence over any statement or code and conduct – whether in belief, or acts of worship such as dealings and transactions, mannerisms, politics or social life…
They are those who are observant and lie in wait for every group that has deviated from the way of Islaam, like the Jahmees and the Mu’tazilees and the Khawaarij and the Rawaafidh and the Murji’ah and the Qadriyyah and all of those who have deviated from the way of Allaah and have followed their desires in every time and place – they not affected by the reproach of the blamers, in the cause of Allaah
They are the group that the Messenger of Allaah has praised and commended in his saying, “There will not cease to be a group from my Ummah manifest and upon the truth not being harmed by those who forsake them neither by those who oppose them until the hour is established.” [1]
They are the Saved Sect firm upon that which the Messenger and his Companions were upon, those who have been distinguished and defined by the Messenger of Allaah when he mentioned that this Ummah shall divide into seventy three sects all going to the Hell-fire except one and it was said, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allaah?” He said, “They are those who are upon that which I and my Comapnions are upon.”
And this is not something we say in exageration or a mere claim, but verily we speak a reality that the text of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah bears witness to, which history bears witness to, and to which their (i.e., the Ahlul-Hadeeth’s) statements, their state of affairs, their writings and works also bear witness to. They are those who put before their eyes the statement of Allaah: And hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allaah. [2]….
They are the most staunch in distancing themselves from opposing the command of the Messenger and the most distant from fitnah…

Even though the words of the Adhaan are little, they gather affairs of Aqeedah within them; because the Adhaan begins with the proclamation of Allaah’s Exaltedness (or Greatness) and this necessitates Allaah’s Existence and Absolute Perfection; then extoling Allaah with Tawheed and negating a partner (or partners) from Him; then affirmation of Muhammad’s Messengership (sallal-laahu-alahi-wasallam); then a call to a specific act of obedience to Allaah preceded by the testimony to Muhammad’s Messengership, because this act of obedience cannot be known except through the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam); then a call to success and it is that permanent residence, and in it is an indication to the afterlife. Then what is repeated of the words of the Adhaan are repeated for emphasis. [1]
This faa-idah was sent by our brother Dawud [Markaz Mu-aadh (Slough)]. May Allaah reward him with good and grant all of us the goodness in this life and the next. Aameen.
”Strive today to actualise Tawheed; for indeed (you) cannot reach Allaah’s (pleasure) except by way of it. Be eager to establish the rights of Tawheed, because you cannot be saved from Allaah’s punishment except through it.” [Kalimah Al-Ikhlaas: page 54]

Ustaadh Abu Khadeejah (may Allaah preserve him) sent this message via WhatsApp from Abu Afnaan Muhammad (may Allaah preserve him):
From some of the benefits of today’s lesson in Kitab at Tawheed with Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Ramzan al Hajiri حفظه الله تعالى in the city of ad Dammam:
1. Being firm upon the truth is more difficult than knowing the truth. 2. Students of knowledge – spread at tawheed. The people are in need of at tawheed more than their need of food, drink and clothing. A person will not die until the provisions Allah has decreed for him have reached him, but if he dies upon as shirk (his abode is the hellfire forever) This is the concern because he can have all the dunya and it wont benefit him if he goes to Allah upon shirk. 3. The people of falsehood and bidah are the same throughout the ages in their refutation of the truth. If you tell a Jahmi the verses regarding Allahs names and attributes, he’ll say ‘don’t qoute the verses of the Hashawiyah (deragatory name used by the jahmiyah to disparage ahl sunnah).
If you go to someone who worships graves and tell him the verses of tawheed al ibaada, he’ll say don’t use the verses of the wahabiyah. And if you go the the khawarij and tell them the verses and ahadith of hearing and obeying (the rulers) they will respond don’t use the verses and proofs of the jaamiyah (reference to Sheikh Muhammad Amaan). Ya subhaan Allah!! Look at how they describe verses and ahadith. Verses of the Quran and ahaadith of the Messenger. Are these not the statements of the Lord of Allah Worlds and the statements of the best of mankind? 4. A person is misguided if he is ignorant of the truth with its proofs and if he wanted to know the truth he is prevented from arriving at it as there are those inviduals who warn from the truth and its people. So he is ignorant of the truth and has become an enemy to its people.
The sheikh mentioned a statement by Ibn Baz: ‘miskeen, a person is ignorant and then becomes an enemy to the people of truth. How will know the truth? Mushkilah!!!’

If you see your time and life pass by, and you have not produced anything worthwhile or beneficial, and you do not find any blessing in your time then be wary that the statement of Allah has overcome you:
“And obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, one who follows his own lusts and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.” Al-Kahf: 28 [Ref 1]
And in this ayah is an indication of the importance of the heart’s presence when performing dhikr of Allaah. And that the person who remembers Allah with [only] his tongue and not his heart, [then] the barakah [blessing] is removed from his actions and his time to the extent that his deeds become lost.[Ref 2]
Imam As-Sa’di -rahimahullah- said about this verse in his tafseer. [The one who is] heedless of Allaah then his recompense is that Allah has made him heedless of His remembrance. “Who follows his own lusts” – whatever his soul desires he does and he strives in its attainment, even if it was to his destruction and loss. [If that occurs] then verily he has taken his desires as his god, as Allah the Most High said:
“Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilah (god), and Allah knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will guide him after Allah? Will you not then remember?” Soorah Al-Jathiya:23[Ref 3]
