Wearing a Watch on the Right or Left Hand? Analysis of the Scholars

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

A question that is presented, and an issue that is occasionally discussed, is whether the watch should be worn on the right hand or the left? What follows is a brief analysis of the issue based upon the statements of various scholars of ahlus-sunnah.

Shaikh al-Fawzaan:

Q: “Is it better to be worn on the right hand or the left? [i.e. the watch]”

A: “In accordance to the habit, this is [an affair] from the habits and norms, a person wears it in accordance to how the society wears it [i.e. if the right hand is the normal way then so be it, and if the left is normal then so be it]”.

Shaikh al-Albany:

“The watch is to be worn on the right in following the Sunnah of the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم who used to like to do things with the right [hand or side first] in all his affairs, and this is an affair from the affairs…and it is not to be worn on the left as an opposition to the disbelievers, and Allah knows best”.

Shaikh ibn ul-Uthaymeen:

“Wearing a watch on the right hand is not better then wearing it on the left hand, because [wearing] the watch resembles [wearing] the ring closely, so there is no difference if you put the watch on the right or the left hand. However, there is no doubt that wearing it on the left hand is easier for the person in terms of looking at it and similarly it is safer on the left hand since the right hand engages in much more activity and so it is more dangerous [to perhaps damaging the watch]. The affair is one with leeway in it, so it cannot be said the Sunnah is to wear it on the right hand since wearing a ring can be done on the right or the left according to the Sunnah, and the watch is extremely similar to the ring”.

It must be noted though, some scholars have elaborated upon this affair and explained that it is not permissible for men to abuse the wearing of a watch, i.e they should not wear fanciful, beautified watches resembling bracelets and other jewellery in their appearance since that would be  imitation of women.

Referring to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم as “Habeeb ullah”? Sh.ibn Uthaymeen

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

It is common to hear the phrase “Habeeb ullah” referring to the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم, however how accurate is this statement? Shaikh ibn ul-Uthaymeen رحمه الله responds:

“The prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم is habeeb ullah [beloved of Allah] no doubt, for indeed he loves Allah and is beloved to Allah, however there is a description that is higher and better than this, and that is to say “Khaleel ullah”. For indeed the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم is the khaleel of Allah as in the hadith, “Indeed Allah took me as a khaleel just as He took Ibrahim as a khaleel”.

Therefore, the one who describes the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم as “habeeb ullah” has actually lowered him صلى الله عليه و سلم from his status, because “khaleel” is greater and higher than “habeeb”, since all the believers can be said to be the “habeeb” of Allah, but the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم is in a position higher than that, and that is the position of being the “khaleel” [which is a greater level of love than habeeb]”.

[Fataawa Arkaan il-Islaam p98/99 paraphrased]

Similarly Shaikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned, “The statement of some of the people that Mohammad صلى الله عليه و سلم is “habeeb ullah” and that Ibrahim عليه السلام  is “khaleel ullah”, thinking that “habeeb” is a greater love than “khaleel” is a weak statement, rather the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم is khaleel ullah”

[Majmoo’ ul Fataawa 10/24 paraphrased]

Kuffaar know the importance of stability, why listen to them when they provoke us against our Muslim Rulers

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Al-Allaamah Al-Izz Bin Abdis Salaam (rahimahullaah) said: Had it not been for the appointment of a ruler, the beneficial universal affairs would have been lost, universal corruption would have become the reality, the strong would have overcome the weak and the (immoral) lowly ones would have overcome the noble (mannered) ones.

Shaikh Abdus-Salaam Burgess (rahimahullaah) said: The explanation of this is that the majority of the children of Adam are inclined towards injustice and love of vengeance.  And had it not been that there was a ruler who administers their affairs, they would have become like the beasts of the wild and fish of the sea—the strong eats the weak. Can I search through My Children’s Phone and Computer? Al-Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

This article was forwarded to us by Ustaadh Abdul Waahid (Abu Khadeejah) via WhatsApp and the translator is Ustaadh Hassan Somali (may Allaah preserve them)

Noble Shaykh-may Allaah grant you success-the questioner asks: ”Is it permissible for me as a parent to search through the mobile and computer of my children, fearing that there may be something upon them?

The Shaykh responded:

”Yes, this is obligatory upon you.  It is [mandatory] that you inspect them and look through them.  How many times have I mentioned to you that you should not buy them mobile phones that have the capability to do more than [make a call] and speak on them…..”

The questioner said, may Allaah preserve you: ‘’some people say that this type of behaviour on behalf of the father is deemed spying, which has been prohibited.  Is there any truth to this statement?

The Shaykh responded: ‘’This speech is false and erroneous.  The parent is commanded to nurture and educate their children, supervise them and to monitor them.  It is compulsory for them to do this, and this is not considered to be spying.  This is fulfilling the mandatory duty that Allaah has placed upon him….’’

Benefits from Shaykh Hasan Marzooq Al-Banna -حفظه الله-

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

السلام عليكم

Inshaa Allah we will share some advice and benefits taken from tonight’s lesson on the 20th night of Safar 1434 corresponding with the 1st of January 2013, with Shaykh Hasan Marzooq Al-Banna -حفظه الله و جزاه الله خيرا-

The Shaykh -حفظه الله- said:

"Fear Allah and have Taqwa of Allah regardless of where you are, and not just when you are in the Masjid, just as the Messenger of Allah said:

“Fear Allah where ever you are”

Saheeh Al Jaami’ As Sagheer Al Albani

The Shaykh -حفظه الله-
was asked what harms and prevents a student of knowledge attaining ilm; from his answers the Shaykh said

Bad mannerisms and laziness in acts of worship”

The Shaykh -حفظه الله- answered a question pertaining to the UK and after consultation, told the people to refer back to Al-Athariyyah and Al-Masjid As-Sunnah in London, Al Masjid As-Salafi in Birmingham and Al Markaz As-Salafi in Manchester.

A brother said I have not studied Islamic knowledge for a long time where should i start?

(Paraphasing) The Shaykh -حفظه الله-replied:

Begin with the Usool, study the likes of Al-Usool Ath-Thalaatha and Al-Qawaaidul Arba’a and Al-Usool As-Sitta, start with the small books which will strengthen and build your foundations and give you the Usool that you need.

The final benefit we will mention is that
the Shaykh -حفظه الله- said:

“The Truth is One, The Usool (of Ahlul-Sunnah) are one and they do NOT change.”

Patience makes a person firm – Shaykh Fawzaan

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

السلام عليكم

Shaykh Fawzaan -حفظه الله- stated in one of his lectures:

“Patience is that which makes a person firm upon the religion as for the person who does not have patience then this (one) is not firm upon the religion.”

Which type of Patience is best?

To speak or not to speak….

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last day then let him speak good or remain silent”
Bukhaari & Muslim

And the Messenger of Allah – صلى الله عليه و سلم -said

“A good word is charity”
Saheeh Al Jaami’ As Sagheer: Al-Albani

“The majority of sins of the children of Aadam (عليه الصلاة و السلام) are because of his tongue.”
Saheeh Al Jaami’ As Sagheer: Al-Albani

Imaam An-Nawawi commented on the first hadeeth *:

This hadeeth is clear that it is befitting that you do not speak except if the speech is good and that there is a clear benefit. And when there is doubt (whether there is) a clear benefit then you do not speak.

Know that it is befitting for every person (who has reached the age of accountability and is sane) that he preserves his tongue from all speech except if the speech is clear in its benefit.

And when the benefit in speaking or leaving speech is equal; then the Sunnah is to refrain from speaking. Because it is possible that permissible speech can be swept along and become impermissible or disliked speech and this is the norm in most cases; and there is nothing that can equal safety.
