Are you rewarded for reading the Qur’aan even though you do not understand its meaning?

Question:

The female questioner asks: Will one be rewarded for reading the Qur’aan even though he (or she) does not know its meaning?

Answer:

Yes he (or she) will be rewarded due to general statement of the Messenger (sallal laahu alayhi wa sallam): Whoever reads the Qur’aan, he will have ten rewards for every letter.’’ Then he (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: And I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather ‘Alif’ is a letter, ‘Laam’ is a letter and ‘Meem’ is a letter. A Person suddenly gets preoccupied with something else after sitting down to read the Qur’aan: Is anything wrong with this?

Question:

The questioner asks: If a person holds the Mushaf to read but then he gets preoccupied with another affair; so he returns after a while to (continue) reading. Is there anything (wrong) with that?

Answer:

There is nothing (wrong) with that because this (deed) is a supererogatory act of worship. The performer of a supererogatory act of worship is rewarded, but he (or she) is not sinful if he (or she) abandons it. Hopefully, the one who asked this question will be rewarded (in-shaa-Allaah) because he was determined to carry out an act of worship with this intention (i.e. to recite the Qur’aan). Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu-anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:

Whoever desires to do a good deed then does not do it [i.e. he (or she) is genuinely prevent from doing so) , Allah will write it down as one complete good deed. If he thinks of doing a good deed and then does it, Allah [may He be glorified and exalted] will write it down between ten and seven hundred fold, or many more. If he thinks of doing a bad deed then he does not do it, Allah will write it down as one complete good deed, and if he thinks of it then does it, Allah will write it down as one bad deed.[Saheeh Muslim 131]

[1] Fataawaa on the virtues of good deeds, by Shaikh Muhammad Bin Abdillaah As-Subayyil (rahimahullaah): [Recitation of the Qur’aan after finishing my work]

Question:

The questioner says: I work as an accountant in one of the companies and I have a lot of free time during which I read the Qur’aan and listen to the Noble Qur’aan Broadcast. However, when my boss arrives I close the Mushaf. So what is the ruling on this action (of mine)? Benefit us with an answer and may Allaah reward you.

Answer:

If it is the case that you have carried out your work perfectly and fulfil everything your boss requires of you without delay, then it is permissible for you to read the Qur’aan and beneficial books, and listen to the Noble Qur’aan Broadcast in your free time. Rather benefitting from this (free) time in such activities is better than wasting it in that which does not benefit.

We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves….

Allaah (The Most High) said:

We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur’an) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things? [41:53]

[سَنُرِيهِمْ آيَاتِنَا فِي الْآفَاقِ –  We will show them Our Signs in the universe]: The (Islamic) conquest of the furthest regions of the earth. [وَفِي أَنفُسِهِمْ – and in their ownselves]: The conquest of Makkah.

This is the statement of Al-Hasan, Mujaahid and Sadiy (rahimahullaah)

Do Not Worship The Sun and The Moon, But Worship The One Who Created Them

Allaah (The Most High) said:

And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him. [1]

[41:37]

[3] A self-amazed modernist says, ‘’None is equal to us in military might!’’ Say to him: ”Your predecessors uttered the same statement and this was their end.’’

Allaah (The Most High) said:

As for ‘Ad, they were arrogant in the land without right, and they said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?” See they not that Allah, Who created them was mightier in strength than them. And they used to deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.)!

So We sent upon them furious wind in days of evil omen (for them) that We might give them a taste of disgracing torment in this present worldly life, but surely the torment of the Hereafter will be more disgracing, and they will never be helped. [41:15-16]

[2] A Self-Amazed Modernist says, ‘’Look at what we can do and how much we have accomplished in this worldly life?!’’ Tell him, ”Ponder upon these Aayaat in Soorah Naazi’aat!”

 Allaah (The Most High) said:

Are you more difficult to create, or is the heaven that He constructed?

He raised its height, and He has equally ordered it,

Its night He covers with darkness, and its forenoon He brings out (with light).

And after that He spread the earth;

And brought forth therefrom its water and its pasture;

And the mountains He has fixed firmly;

(To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle.

But when there comes the greatest catastrophe (i.e. the Day of Recompense, etc.),

The Day when man shall remember what he strove for,

And Hell-fire shall be made apparent in full view for (every) one who sees,

Then, for him who Tagha (transgressed all bounds, in disbelief, oppression and evil deeds of disobedience to Allah).

And preferred the life of this world (by following his evil desires and lusts),

Verily, his abode will be Hell-fire;

But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts.

Verily, Paradise will be his abode.

They ask you (O Muhammad) about the Hour, – when will be its appointed time?

You have no knowledge to say anything about it,

To your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof?

You (O Muhammad) are only a warner for those who fear it,

The Day they see it, (it will be) as if they had not tarried (in this world) except an afternoon or a morning.

[Aayaat 27-45]

[1] Happy Muslims–Be happy, but do not be sinful and avoid this blatant falsehood!

[2] O People of the Book! These were some of the noble qualities of some of your predecessors who accepted Islaam!

Allaah (The Most High) said:

And when they (who call themselves Christians) listen to what has been sent down to the Messenger (Muhammad ), you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they have recognised. They say: “Our Lord! We believe; so write us down among the witnesses.

And why should we not believe in Allah and in that which has come to us of the truth (Islamic Monotheism)? And we wish that our Lord will admit us (in Paradise on the Day of Resurrection) along with the righteous people (Prophet Muhammad  and his Companions).”

So because of what they said, Allah rewarded them Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise), they will abide therein forever. Such is the reward of good-doers.

[5:83-85]

[1] O People of the Book! Here are some of the noble qualities of some of your predecessors who accepted Islaam

Allaah (The Most High) said:

Not all of them are alike; a party of the people of the Scripture stand for the right, they recite the Verses of Allah during the hours of the night, prostrating themselves in prayer. They believe in Allah and the Last Day; they enjoin Al-Ma’ruf (Islamic Monotheism, and following Prophet Muhammad ) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and opposing Prophet Muhammad ; and they hasten in (all) good works; and they are among the righteous. [3:113-114]
