[1] A Brief Reply to Reem Krimly at Al-Arabiya News – [Ruling On Shisha and The Beard]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The Saudi Committee of Senior Scholars stated:

Shisha, hookah and smoking are from the khabaa’ith (evil, filthy, unlawful things) and they are haraam (prohibited) due to that which they contain of harm to the body and wealth.

And Allah [The Most High] said about the Prophet Muhammad [peace and blessings be upon him]:

وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ

And He allows them as lawful At-Taiyibat [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khaba’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.) [Surah Al-A’raaf Verse 157]

And it is established that Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings be upon him] said, “
” There should be neither harming not reciprocating harm”. [Reported by Ibn Mājah, al-Dārqutnī].

Therefore it is impermissible to use these things, to sell them or to promote them. [Ref 1]

Saudi Scholar, Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Smoking is forbidden due to the evidences found in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and based on sound opinion.  Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said: [وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيماً  – And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you]

[Soorah Nisaa: Ayah: 29]

It is well-known that smoking causes harm to the body which may appear sooner or later, and this is an affair agreed upon by the doctors of today after the advancement of medicine. Smoking also disfigures the teeth, the lips etc.

Also, Allaah [the Most High] said: [وَلا تُؤْتُوا السُّفَهَاءَ أَمْوَالَكُمُ الَّتِي جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ قِيَاماً – And give not unto the foolish your property which Allah has made a means of support for you]. Therefore, Allaah clarified the wisdom behind wealth and that He made it a means of support through which the Religious and worldly benefits are established. And it is well known that spending wealth on cigarettes neither supports Religious nor worldly benefits, rather it does the opposite.

And from the evidences in the Sunnah concerning the impermissibility of smoking is that the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] forbade the squandering of wealth, and squandering wealth is when it is spent in other than what is beneficial. It is well known that spending wealth on smoking is a spending in which there is no benefit, rather it is spending in that which is harmful.

As for sound opinion, then sound intellect necessitates that a person does not partake in that which harms him and wastes his wealth, whilst he is a believer and that he will be brought to account. Therefore, sound intellect necessitates that a person does what benefits him and leaves what harms him, and from the perfection of [one’s religion and character] is to leave that which is of no benefit.

The affairs are three: Beneficial things, Harmful things and Things in which there is neither harm nor benefit.  The first affair is sought after, the second affair is blameworthy, and regarding the third affair, a person refrains from it out of seeking perfection in his affairs, but there is no blame on him if he does it. Ref 2]

Saudi Scholar, Al-Allaamah Abdullah Bin Muhammad Bin Humaid [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

The Muslim scholars hold a consensus that it is not permissible to shave (one’s) beard, and likewise it is (not permissible) to shorten it; except what has been narrated from Ibn Umar (radiyallaahu-anhu) that when he used to perform hajj or umrah, he would take hold of his beard (i.e. a fist) and cut the excess. As for the moustache, it is obligatory to trim it. Indeed, the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Trim the moustache and leave the beard, and be different from the fire worshippers.” [Reported by Bukhaari: No: 5892] [Ref 3]

Saudi Scholar, Shaikh Abdur Razzaaq Al-Badr [may Allaah preserve him] said:

Firstly, every smoker should know that smoking is Haraam. Many scholars have issued verdicts to show that it is Haraam based on many evidences from the Qur’aan and the [authentic] Sunnah. [From them is the statement of Allaah]: ”And do not throw yourselves into destruction.” [Surah Al-Baqarah’ Aayah 195]. And Allaah said: ”He allows them as lawful At-Taiyibat [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khaba’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.)” [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 157].  Smoking is khabeeth.

Secondly, all doctors are unanimously agreed on the fact that smoking harms a person’s health and it is one of the greatest causes of cancer.

Thirdly, smoking is a waste of wealth and a means of placing wealth in the hands of the enemies [of Islaam]. So, the cigarettes harm his health and strengthen his enemy. If the smoker was asked, “You have been smoking for forty or fifty years, what benefit have you acquired from it?!” There is not a single benefit; however the harms are great indeed. He will realise the harm on his health, wealth etc Therefore, the one afflicted with smoking should fear Allaah. [Ref 4]

Saudi Scholar, Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] was asked as follows:

What do you say regarding the one who when it is said to him, “Fear Allaah regarding sins, such as shaving the beard, smoking and Isbaal [i.e. wearing one’s garments below the ankles]”, he says, “Eemaan is in the heart and it is not about growing the beard, abandoning smoking and Isbaal”; and he says, “Indeed, Allaah does not look at your bodies, rather He looks at your hearts”; and he intends by this the growing of the beard, abandoning smoking and Isbaal [i.e. that Eemaan is not about these affairs, rather it is what is settles in the heart]?

Response: This statement is often uttered by some of the ignorant people or those who hold false and erroneous views. It [i.e. what is uttered by this person] is a statement of truth by way of which falsehood is intended, because he utters this statement to justify his sins – that even in the absence of deeds that are to be performed in obedience to Allaah as well as not abandoning forbidden deeds, Eemaan in the heart is sufficient. This false and erroneous view is clearly unveiled because Eemaan is not only something in the heart; rather Eemaan – as defined by Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah – is speech of the tongue [i.e. acts of worship carried out with the tongue], belief in the heart and deeds of the limbs. Imaam Al-Hasan Al-Basri [rahimahullaah] said, “Eemaan is not to merely say something nor mere hope, rather it is what settles in the heart and deeds testify to it”.

Deeds of disobedience and abandoning obedience is proof that either there is no Eemaan in one’s heart or it is deficient. Allaah [The Exalted] said: [يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَأۡڪُلُواْ ٱلرِّبَوٰٓا – O you who believe! Eat not Riba (usury)]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 130]

Allaah said: [يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ – O you who believe! Do your duty to Allah and fear Him]. [Surah al-Maa’idah. Aayah 35]

Allaah said: [مَنۡ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحً۬ا- whosoever believed in Allah and the Last Day and worked righteousness]. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayah 69]

Allaah said: [إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ – Truly those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness]. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 277]

Allaah said: [مَنۡ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحً۬ا – whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds]. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 62]

Eemaan cannot be regarded complete except when accompanied by righteous deeds and abandoning disobedience. Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ

إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسۡرٍ

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ

By Al-‘Asr (the time). Verily! Man is in loss; except those who believe [in Islamic Monotheism] and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allah’s Cause during preaching His religion of Islamic Monotheism etc] [Surah Al-Asr]

Allaah said: [يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ ٱلرَّسُولَ – O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger [Muhammad]. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 59]

Allaah said: [يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱسۡتَجِيبُواْ لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمۡ لِمَا يُحۡيِيڪُمۡ‌ۖ- O you who believe! Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life [i.e. fill your hearts with Eemaan, guidance and lead you righteous deeds]. [Surah Al-Anfaal. Aayah 24]

Belief in the heart alone is not enough without uttering one’s Eemaan with the tongue and performing deeds with the limbs, because this [i.e. belief in the heart without performing deeds] is the Madhab of those Murji’ah amongst the Jahmiyyah and other than them, and it is a false Madhab; rather one has to believe in the heart, utter his Eemaan [i.e. what he believes in] and perform deeds with the limbs. Committing acts of disobedience to Allaah is a proof of  the weakness and deficiency of the Eemaan in one’s heart, because one’s Eemaan increases when Allaah is obeyed and decreases when Allaah is disobeyed. It is Sunnah to Walk Barefooted Sometimes

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

A man from the companions of the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] travelled to Fadaalah Ibn Ubayd [may Allaah be pleased with him] when he was in Egypt. He came to him and said, “I have not come to visit you, but you and I heard a Prophetic narration from Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him]. I hope you may have some knowledge about it”. He asked, “What is it?” He replied, “Such and such”. He said, “Why do I see you dishevelled when you are the ruler of this land?” He said, “Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] forbade us from indulging in excess luxury”. He said, “Why do I see you unshod?” He replied, “The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] used to command us to be barefooted at times”. [Ref 1]

Al-Manaawee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

If a person’s feet are safe from coming into contact with impurities, such as when he is on a sandy ground and it does not harm him, then it is recommended that sometimes one walks barefooted with the intention of taming and disciplining the soul. And because of this, it has been reported that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] used to walk barefooted at times and sometimes whilst wearing shoes, and the companions used to walk barefooted sometimes and whilst wearing shoes at other times. [Ref 2]

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

It is Sunnah to wear shoes and it is also Sunnah to be barefooted. This is why the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] forbade a person from wearing shows always and commanded that one walks barefooted sometimes. Therefore, the Sunnah is that there is no problem in wearing shoes, but it is befitting that sometimes he is barefooted amongst the people, so that this Sunnah is manifested, which used to be criticised by some people – when they see a person walking barefooted who say, “What is this?” This [objection] is wrong because the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] used to forbid one from wearing shoes too much and commanded that one is barefooted sometimes. [Ref 3]

Al -Allaamah Abdul Muhsin Al-Abbaad [may Allaah preserve him] said:

If there are things on the ground that requires that a person wear shoes, then one wears shoes. For example, if there is glass, metal, stones or thorns on the ground or the ground is very hot due to the heat of the sun, then utilises this blessing which Allaah has bestowed on him and that is to wear shoes. However, the fact that sometimes he does not wear shows is due to what has been reported in this Prophetic narration from Fadaalah Ibn Ubayd [may Allaah be pleased with him]- that the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] commanded them to be barefooted sometimes, so that there is no excess and exaggerated enjoyment, but rather a person appears a bit dishevelled (sometimes), but not always and forever, rather only sometimes. Part 1: The Terrorists Were Motivated By Hatred and Islamist Ideology: [A Brief Reply to This Statement of a Daily Telegraph Columnist Called Nick Timothy]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Nick Timothy [may Allaah guide him to the right path – speech and action] stated regarding the terrorists who carried out the attacks at a synagogue in Vienna -Austria:

So, Nick stated that the perpetrators were motivated by hatred and Islamist Ideology!

First, there is no doubt that they are motivated by hatred, rather they are motivated by blameworthy hatred, because there is not a single one of us except that we do love and hate, but that neither leads many of us – whether Muslim or Non-Muslim – to something blameworthy nor transgression. As for the upright Muslims, they know that their Lord commanded them, saying:

O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Verse 8]

However, the terrorists – regardless the religion they are ascribed to – submit to their desires and shaytaan, so they give no consideration to protecting human life. Indeed, Islaam is free from their satanic and barbaric deeds. See here:

Second, Nick Timothy says that these people are also motivated by Islamist Ideology.

He should understand that Islam is not an ideology, rather it is the final revelation to humankind from the Lord of the heavens and the earth. However, when people innovate into Islaam, such as what we are witnessing from the terrorists in France and  Austria, then indeed those innovations become ideas of men and have nothing to do with Islaam. The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Whoever innovates into this religion that which is not from it will have it rejected”. He also said, “Whoever does a deed that is not in conformity with the religion, it will be rejected”.

Not only is a Muslim forbidden from religious innovation, rather even the manner in which he performs an act of worship has to be in accordance with the guidance of the Prophet. The terrorists cannot cite a single clear text to justify their deeds, rather they either follow desires, misconstrue texts and follow ambiguities. This is well known to the scholars of Islaam and its upright students since the time of the companions of the Prophet when this sect called the Khawaarij first appeared with their extremist views and transgressions.

Therefore, attaching the word ideology to Islaam and associating the deeds of the terrorists to Islaam is either tantamount to slander or ignorance, so we hope that Nick understands this very well.

Third, regarding the term Islamist accroding to westerners, “It is a person who believes strongly in Islam, especially one who believes that Islam should influence political systems, an advocate or supporter of Islamic militancy or fundamentalism, radical Islamists”.

Observations:

[1] Islamist – One Who Believes Strongly In Islaam, Especially One who Believes That Islaam Should Influence Political Systems

If the term ‘Islamist’ – according to Westerners – is a person who believes strongly in Islaam, especially one who believes that Islam should influence political systems, then indeed this is praiseworthy in the sight of Allaah. Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [hafidhahullaah] said: “Whoever Allaah wishes good for, He grants him understanding in the religion.” When this ‘Understanding in the religion’ is mentioned to the people, they understand it to mean the books of Islamic jurisprudence [i.e. the books that discuss the rulings related to prayer, zakat, fasting, marriage etc]. This is a deficient understanding. Fiqh [understanding] – first and foremost – is the understanding of the (sound) creed and Tawheed (i.e. sound Islamic monotheism). This is the highest level of Fiqh, because the nobility of knowledge is judged based on the nobility of its subject matter. The best and noblest subject matter is Tawheed, which teaches the people about the Attributes of their Lord and the perfection of His Attributes, about His Oneness, to worship Him (alone) and sincerely establish the religion for His Sake. Therefore, we seek understanding of Tawheed from Allaah’s Book, the (authentic) Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and from the understanding of our Salafus Saaleh [i.e. the Sahaabah, the Taab’een and the At-baa at-Taabi’een]. We seek understanding in all areas of (Sharee’ah) knowledge – understanding of halaal and haraam, acts of worship, mutual dealings, sound Islamic politics, economics and in every affair. All these affairs – and all praise and thanks be to Allaah – are extensively [found] in the (message) brought by Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam].

When Fiqh is mentioned, its intended [meaning includes] understanding of every affair that is connected to our religious and worldly affairs, and the foremost of them is the knowledge of Tawheed [Islamic Monotheism]. There is nothing that can do without the knowledge of Tawheed. Some people deeply preoccupy [themselves with other] sciences and subject matters, but do not know this knowledge brought by the Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], to such extent that you find many people who are well versed in language, Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy and the science of rhetoric, but – by Allaah – he does not know [the sound meaning] of ‘Laa ilaaha illal laah’ – the Islamic Monotheism, which Allaah sent all the Messengers with, the first and last of them. [Allaah said]:

[وَلَقَدۡ بَعَثۡنَا فِى ڪُلِّ أُمَّةٍ۬ رَّسُولاً أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱجۡتَنِبُواْ ٱلطَّـٰغُوتَ‌ۖ – And verily, We have sent among every Ummah [community, nation] a Messenger [saying]: “Worship Allah [Alone], and avoid [or keep away from] all false deities.” [Surah An-Nahl Aayah 36]

Every Messenger came with this [Message], until the advent of the seal of the Messengers Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam], who resided in Makkah for ten years and called to Tawheed. Tawheed was the foremost aspect and basis of his call. The prayer – the second pillar of Islaam after the testimony of faith ‘Laa ilaaha illal laah – was not legislated until in the 10th year [of his Messengership], and the full details [related to] Zakat was not legislated until [after his migration to] Madeenah and all the other laws. This shows the importance of Tawheed, so how is it that many people who ascribe to Islaam- those who claim knowledge – are ignorant of it, then how about the ignorant people. And due to this, Misguidance, Bidah and grave worship has become widespread, and this arose due to ignorance regarding the [perfect] Names and Attributes of Allaah and negation of Allaah’s [perfect] Attributes. And [also] a people from the other religions entered into Islaam and plotted against the people [through] corrupt sciences – rhetoric, philosophy, forged [or spurious] historical accounts [or events] and what is similar to that, and thus corrupted their [sound] creed and methodology”. [Marhaban Yaa Taalibal Ilm – pages 243-244. Slightly paraphrased]

Therefore, we say to the ideologues and demagogues in the French media, “We seek understanding of Tawheed from Allaah’s Book, the (authentic) Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] and from the understanding of our Salafus Saaleh [i.e. the Sahaabah, the Taab’een and the At-baa at-Taabi’een]. We seek understanding in all areas of (Sharee’ah) knowledge – understanding of halaal and haraam, acts of worship, mutual dealings, sound Islamic politics, economics and in every affair. All these affairs – and all praise and thanks be to Allaah – are extensively [found] in the (message) brought by Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam]”.

Imaam Ash’Shaatibee [rahimahullaah] said:

“Know that Allaah has established this sharee’ah as a proof against the creation [i.e. mankind and jinn] – the old and young alike; the obedient and the disobedient; the righteous and the wicked. He did not specify the proof against anyone in exclusion of another one. Also all the other revealed laws were established as proof against all the other nations to whom they were revealed. The Sharee’ah is the judge- restrictedly and unrestrictedly; the [source of judgement] and the judge on all those who have reached the age of responsibility. It is the path attached to [what Allaah has ordained] and the Greatest Guide. And have you not seen the statement of Allaah [The Most High]?!

And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad) Ruhan (an Inspiration, and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Qur’an) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path (i.e. Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism).’’ [Soorah Ash-Shooraa. Ayah: 52]

He [alayhis salaatu wassalaam] was the first to be guided to the Book and Eemaan, and then those who followed him. The Book is the Guide and also the Sunnah which was sent down upon him explains that guidance [i.e. the Sunnah and the Qur’aan explain each other]. All the creation [i.e. mankind and Jinn] are guided by it.

Therefore, when this is the case, the Sharee’ah is worthy of being a decisive proof against them [i.e. against mankind and Jinn] and a beacon by way of which they are guided to the truth. Their nobility is established in accordance with how far they embrace its rulings- through acting upon them in speech, belief and deeds– and not merely due to the level of their intellects or their nobility amongst their people. That is because Allaah [The Most High] has determined nobility through Taqwa and no other than it. Allaah [The Most High] said: [إِنَّ أَڪۡرَمَكُمۡ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتۡقَٮٰكُمۡ‌ۚ- Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa] [49:13]

The one who is the firmest [in his  or her] adherence to the Sharee’ah is more worthy of honour and nobility, but it is not possible for the one below this [i.e. the one whose adherence to the Sharee’ah is below that of the one who is firmest in adhering to it] to reach the highest level of honour based on his adherence to the Sharee’ah. Therefore, honour is [measured] in accordance with one’s [level of adherence] to the Sharee’ah”. [Source: Al-Itisaam 3/434 slightly paraphrased]

Therefore, adherence to the Sharee’ah – in all aspects of life – is an act of worship and to refrain from judging by the Sharee’ah is a sin.  Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751H) said: “And it is correct that judging by other than what Allaah has revealed is both types of kufr (disbelief) – kufr asghar (the minor disbelief) and kufr akbar (the major disbelief) – and [which of the two it is] depends on the condition of the ruler. If he believes in the obligation of judging by what Allaah has revealed in this situation but turned away from it – out of disobedience – and while acknowledging that he is deserving of punishment then this is kufr asghar. And if he believes that it is not obligatory and that he has a choice in the matter – along with his firm belief that it is the judgement of Allaah – then this is kufr akbar – and if was ignorant in the matter or made an error then he is one who errs (mukhtee’) and his ruling is as the same for those who err. [Madaarij us-Saalikeen 1/337]

Imaam Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sa’dee (d. 1376H) said: “Judging by other than what Allaah has revealed is among the actions of the People of Disbelief – and it can also take one outside of the religion. And that is when he believes in its legality and its permissibility. And it can sometimes be one of the major sins and from the actions of disbelief – the one who is guilty of it will receive a heavy punishment – and He said: “And whoever does not judge by what Allaah has revealed, then they are the wrongdoers (dhaalimoon).” Ibn Abbaas said: “Kufr less than kufr and dhulm less than dhulm and fisq less than fisq. It is dhulm akbar when it is declared permissible but it is a great sin when it is done without declaring it permissible.” [Tayseer al-Kareem ar-Rahmaan 2/296-297]

Imaam Ibn al-Jawzee (d. 596H) said: “And the decisive speech in this regard is that whoever does not judge by what Allaah has revealed – while rejecting it [in belief] {jahahda) and he knows that it is Allaah who revealed it – as the Jews did – then he is a disbeliever. And whoever does not judge by what Allaah has revealed – inclining to his desires without rejecting it [in belief] then he is a dhaalim, faasiq and it has been reported from Alee bin Abu Talhah from Ibn Abbaas that he said: “Whoever rejects (jahada) what Allaah has revealed then he has disbelieved, and whoever affirms it (aqarra bihi) but does not judge by it – then he is a dhaalim, a faasiq.” [Zaad al-Maysir 2/366]

Imaam Muhammad Ameen ash-Shanqeetee (d. 1393H) said: “Know that the liberating stance in this topic is that kufr, dhulm and fisq, all of them can be used in the legislation with the intent of ‘disobedience’ at one time and with the intent of ‘kufr that ejects from the religion another time’. And whoever does not judge by what Allaah has revealed, turning away and contradicting the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) and nullifying the rulings (ahkaam) of Allaah, then his dhulm, fisq, and kufr – all of them are disbelief that eject from the religion. And whoever does not judge by what Allaah has revealed, whilst believing that he is committing a forbidden action and doing a reprehensible action, then his kufr, dhulm and fisq does not eject him from the religion. [Adwaa al-Bayaan 2/104]

Imaam ibn Abee Izz al-Hanafee (d. 792H) said: “And there is a matter which it is necessary to comprehend well – that ruling by other than what Allaah has revealed can sometimes be kufr that ejects from the religion and sometimes a major or minor sin – or it can be ‘metaphorical kufr’ (kufran majaaziyyan) or ‘minor kufr’ – and this is in accordance with the state of the ruler. If he believes that ruling by other than what Allaah has revealed is not waajib and that he has a choice in the matter – or if he disdains/despises it – while having conviction that it is the rule of Allaah, then this is the major kufr. And if he believes in the obligation to rule by what Allaah has revealed and in this [particular] incident [he knows it to be the rule of Allaah] but he turns away from it – whilst acknowledging that he deserves punishment then he is a disobedient person and he is termed a disbeliever with the metaphorical type of kufr or the minor type of kufr. [Sharh Aqeedat it-Tahaawiyyah p. 363]

And the Imaam and Mujaddid, Shaikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhaab (d. 1206H) said: “Know that those things which eject from the religion (nawaaqid) are then in number: …Whoever believes (i’taqada 0that a guidance other than that of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) is more perfect or that the judgement other than his is better – such as the one who gives preference to the hukm of the tawaagheet – then such a one is a disbeliever…” [Mu’allifaat Ash-Shaikh al-Imaam Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhaab – al-Qismul-Awwal]

Imaam Abdul-Azeez bin Baaz said: “And whoever ruled by other than what Allaah has revealed then he will not be in other than one of four situations: “

The one who says: ‘I rule by this because it is superior to the Sharee’ah of Islaam.’ Such a one is disbeliever in the sense of the major disbelief.

The one who says: ‘I rule by this because it is like the Sharee’ah of Islaam, so ruling by it is permissible and ruling by the Sharee’ah is permissible’. Such a one is a disbeliever in the sense of the major disbelief.

The one who says: ‘I rule by this and ruling by the Sharee’ah of Islaam is superior but ruling by other than what Allaah has revealed is permissible.’ Such a one is a disbeliever in the sense of major disbelief.

The one who says: ‘I rule by this’ while he believes that ruling by other than what Allaah has revealed is not permissible and who says that ‘the Sharee’ah of Islaam is superior and it is not permissible to ruler by other than it’ but he is neglectful, or treats matters lightly, or does this action due to a reason which proceeds from his rulers, then he is a disbeliever in the sense of minor disbelief which does not eject from the religion – and it is considered one of the greatest of major sins.” [Al-Hukmu bi-Ghairi Maa Anzalallaahu wa Usool ut-Takfeer p. 71/72]

Therefore, if this is the Islamist intended by the French media- the one who adheres to the judgement of the Sharee’ah in all aspects of life, then indeed this is praiseworthy in the sight of Allaah. However, as Muslims living in the West, we abide by the laws of the land – neither commit terrorist acts not violate our covenants, because such behaviour is the path of the Khawaarij – terrorists [ISIS, Jabhat An-Nusra and their ilk].

[2] If the term Islamist – an Advocate or Supporter of Islamic Militancy or Fundamentalism, Radical Islamists etc

If the term ‘Islamist’ – according to Westerners – is ‘an advocate or supporter of militancy, radicalism or terrorism, then indeed this is not to be attributed to Islaam, because the only people known for such behaviour are the khawaarij and those influenced by their ideas. It is well-known in Islaam that a Muslim is not allowed to commit any act of aggression against a non-Muslim citizen just because he disapproves of their behaviour.  The Prophet [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] said, “Whoever kills one who is under an agreement of protection will not smell the fragrance of Paradise”. This hadeeth shows clearly that a Muslim is threatened with punishment in the afterlife for murdering a non-Muslim citizen who is under an agreement of protection. Therefore, how can any sensible person attribute the deeds of such a Muslim to Islaam?!

As for the term ‘Islamic Fundamentalism’, even though there is much dispute between the people regarding its meanings, however the meaning generally intended by those who use it is, ‘Strict observance of the teachings of the Qur’an and the Shari’a (Islamic Law)’. Therefore, if this is what Westerners intend by the term ‘Fundamentalism’, then indeed Allaah [The Exalted] said:

فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ حَتَّىٰ يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُواْ فِىٓ أَنفُسِہِمۡ حَرَجً۬ا مِّمَّا قَضَيۡتَ وَيُسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمً۬ا

But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 65]

Narrated Abu Musa (radiyallaahu-anhu): The Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said, ‘’My example, and the example of what I have been sent with is that of a man who came to some people and said, O people! I have seen the enemy’s army with my own eyes and I am a plain warner; so protect yourselves!’ Then a group of his people obeyed him and fled at night proceeding stealthily till they were safe, while another group of them disbelieved him and stayed at their places till morning when the army came upon them and killed and ruined them completely. So this is the example of that person who obeys me and follows that truth which I have brought (the Qur’aan and the Sunnah), and the example of the one who disobeys me and disbelieves the Truth I have brought. [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Vol 9. Number: 7283]

Therefore, if this is what the media intend by the term fundamentalism, then indeed it is a praiseworthy deed in the sight of Allaah [The Exalted], but if they mean those who advocate violence, then indeed this is the behaviour of the khaarijites innovators – ISIS, Al-Qa’idah, Jabhat An-Nusra and their ilk amongst the terrorists.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon the ideologues to refrain fear-mongering. The one who recently murdered the middle school history teacher had no right to harm anyone, let alone do so in the name of Islaam. So, there’s no need for exaggeration, fear-mongering and sloganeering, as we have heard some of the French ideologues saying, “Islamists want our future “They will never have it”. Indeed, we are well aware of what is required of us whilst living in the West.

Obligated Behaviour On Muslims In The West

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [rahimahullaah] stated:

Likewise I invite you to have respect for those people who have the right that they should be respected, from those between you and whom there is and agreement (of protection) [i.e. Non-Muslims]. For the land which you are living is such that there is an agreement between you and them. If this were not the case they would have killed you or expelled you. So preserve this agreement, and do not prove treacherous to it, since treachery is a sign of the hypocrites, and it is not from the way of the Believers.

And know that it is authentically reported from the Prophet that he said : “Whoever kills one who is under and agreement of protection will not smell the fragrance of Paradise.”

Do not be fooled by those sayings of the foolish people : those who say : ‘Those people are Non-Muslims, so their wealth is lawful for us [i.e. to misappropriate or take by way of murder and killing].’ For by Allaah – this is a lie. A lie about Allaah’s Religion, and a lie in Islamic societies.

So we may not say that it is lawful to be treacherous towards people whom we have an agreement with.

O my brothers. O youth. O Muslims. Be truthful in your buying and selling, and renting, and leasing, and in all mutual transactions. Because truthfulness is from the characteristics of the Believers, and Allaah – the Most High – has commanded truthfulness – in the saying of Allaah – the Most High – “O you who believe – fear and keep you duty to Allaah and be with the truthful”

And the Prophet encouraged truthfulness and said : “Adhere to truthfulness, because truthfulness leads to goodness, and goodness leads to Paradise; and a person will continue to be truthful, and strive to be truthful until he will be written down with Allaah as a truthful person“.

And he warned against falsehood, and said : “Beware of falsehood, because falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. And a person will continue lying, and striving to lie until he is written down with Allaah as a great liar.”

O my brother Muslims. O youth. Be true in your sayings with your brothers, and with those Non-Muslims whom you live along with – so that you will be inviters to the Religion of Islaam, by your actions and in reality. So how many people there are who first entered into Islaam because of the behaviour and manners of the Muslims, and their truthfulness, and their being true in their dealings.

Finally, Nick stated that “It is time to end the denialism and stop making excuses for this barbarism”.

We say to him:

Indeed, the upright Muslim scholars and their students are foremost in condemning the barbarism of the terrorists, and neither are they in denial nor do they compromise, rather give upright guidance – free from extremism and negligence.

Our Mashaayikh in the West are well known for their staunch stance against the extremists and terrorists. Shaikh Abdul Waahid Abu Khadeejah [hafidhahullaah] has already clarified this matter five years ago.

The Blessing of Day and Night In Relation to Work and Rest, Hearing and Sight – By Imaam As-Sadi

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah (The Most High) said:

Say (O Muhammad ): “Tell me! If Allah made night continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is an ilah (a god) besides Allah who could bring you light? Will you not then hear?” Say (O Muhammad ): “Tell me! If Allah made day continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is an ilah (a god) besides Allah who could bring you night wherein you rest? Will you not then see?” It is out of His Mercy that He has put for you night and day, that you may rest therein (i.e. during the night) and that you may seek of His Bounty (i.e. during the day), and in order that you may be grateful. [Surah Al-Qasas. Aayaat 71-73]

The (night and day) are a bestowal from Allaah to His servants and this should make them  thankful, worship Allaah alone and fulfil His Rights. Allaah- out of His Mercy- created the day for them in order that they may seek after His Bounties- seeking after their provisions and livelihoods during daylight. And Allaah created the night for them (as a means of) rest and repose- (allowing) their bodies and souls to take a rest due to tiredness after work during the day. This is a bounty of Allaah (bestowed) on His servants and Mercy (from Him). Is there anyone who is able to do this (besides Allaah)?

Regarding the night [i.e. after Allaah mentioned that He was the one who appointed the night for them], He said: [أَفَلَا تَسْمَعُونَ  -Then will you not then hear], and regarding the day [i.e. after Allaah mentioned that He was the one who appointed the day for them], He said: [أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ  –  Then will you not then see?]. This is because the (faculty) of hearing is sharper than the (faculty) of sight during night time, and the (faculty) of sight is sharper than the (faculty) of hearing during day time.

In these verses (i.e. Al-Qasas 71, 72 & 73) the servant is exhorted to ponder upon the blessings Allaah has bestowed on them. He should contemplate regarding what the situation would have been if such blessings were absent, because if a servant were to contemplate on the situation due to the presence of such blessings compared to what the situation  would have been if such blessings were absent, he will realise the (great) station of this favour, contrary to the one who merely goes along with the normal state of affairs and considers (these favours) as something  that will neither cease nor come to an end. So his heart is hindered from praising Allaah for these blessings and from realising that he is in need of Allaah every time. This neither prompts his thoughts towards thanksgiving nor remembrance. [1] Communications Between The Noble Messenger And The Kings, Rulers- [Brief Lessons For The Freedom of Speech Worshippers – (The Vile Slanderers, Immoral Cartoonists And Militant Secularists)]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

“In the name of Allah the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

(This letter is) from Muhammad the slave of Allaah and His Messenger to Heraclius the ruler of Byzantine. Peace be upon him who follows the right path. Furthermore I invite you to Islam, and if you become a Muslim you will be safe, and Allah will double your reward, and if you reject this invitation of Islam you will be committing a sin by misguiding your Arisiyin (peasants). (And I recite to you Allah’s Statement:)

Say (O Muhammad): “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: “Bear witness that we are Muslims]. [Surah Aal Imraan. Aayah 64]

Ibn Abbaas [radiyallaahu-anhumaa] said:

Abu Sufyan bin Harb [radiyallaahu-anhu] informed me that Heraclius had sent a messenger to him while he had been accompanying a caravan from Quraish. They were merchants doing business in Sham (Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan), at the time when Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) had truce with Abu Sufyan and Quraish infidels. So Abu Sufyan and his companions went to Heraclius at Ilya (Jerusalem). Heraclius called them in the court and he had all the senior Roman dignitaries around him. He called for his translator who, translating Heraclius’s question said to them, “Who amongst you is closely related to that man who claims to be a Prophet?” Abu Sufyan replied, “I am the nearest relative to him (amongst the group).”

Heraclius said, “Bring him (Abu Sufyan) close to me and make his companions stand behind him.” Abu Sufyan added, Heraclius told his translator to tell my companions that he wanted to put some questions to me regarding that man (The Prophet) and that if I told a lie they (my companions) should contradict me.” Abu Sufyan added, “By Allah! Had I not been afraid of my companions labelling me a liar, I would not have spoken the truth about the Prophet.

Abu Sufyaan said: The first question he asked me about him was:

‘What is his family status amongst you?’

I replied, ‘He belongs to a good (noble) family amongst us.’

Heraclius further asked, ‘Has anybody amongst you ever claimed the same (i.e. to be a Prophet) before him?’

I replied, ‘No.’

He said, ‘Was anybody amongst his ancestors a king?’

I replied, ‘No.’

Heraclius asked, ‘Do the nobles or the poor follow him?’

I replied, ‘It is the poor who follow him.’

He said, ‘Are his followers increasing decreasing (day by day)?’

I replied, ‘They are increasing.’

He then asked, ‘Does anybody amongst those who embrace his religion become displeased and renounce the religion afterwards?’

I replied, ‘No.’

Heraclius said, ‘Have you ever accused him of telling lies before his claim (to be a Prophet)?’

I replied, ‘No. ‘

Heraclius said, ‘Does he break his promises?’

I replied, ‘No. We are at truce with him but we do not know what he will do in it.’ I could not find opportunity to say anything against him except that.

Heraclius asked, ‘Have you ever had a war with him?’

I replied, ‘Yes.’

Then he said, ‘What was the outcome of the battles?’

I replied, ‘Sometimes he was victorious and sometimes we.’

Heraclius said, ‘What does he order you to do?’

I said, ‘He tells us to worship Allah and Allah alone and not to worship anything along with Him, and to renounce all that our ancestors had said. He orders us to pray, to speak the truth, to be chaste and to keep good relations with our Kith and kin.’

Heraclius asked the translator to convey to me the following, I asked you about his family and your reply was that he belonged to a very noble family. In fact all the Apostles come from noble families amongst their respective peoples. I questioned you whether anybody else amongst you claimed such a thing, your reply was in the negative. If the answer had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man was following the previous man’s statement. Then I asked you whether anyone of his ancestors was a king. Your reply was in the negative, and if it had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man wanted to take back his ancestral kingdom.

I further asked whether he was ever accused of telling lies before he said what he said, and your reply was in the negative. So I wondered how a person who does not tell a lie about others could ever tell a lie about Allah. I, then asked you whether the rich people followed him or the poor. You replied that it was the poor who followed him. And in fact all the Apostle have been followed by this very class of people. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were increasing, and in fact this is the way of true faith, till it is complete in all respects. I further asked you whether there was anybody, who, after embracing his religion, became displeased and discarded his religion. Your reply was in the negative, and in fact this is (the sign of) true faith, when its delight enters the hearts and mixes with them completely. I asked you whether he had ever betrayed. You replied in the negative and likewise the Apostles never betray. Then I asked you what he ordered you to do. You replied that he ordered you to worship Allah and Allah alone and not to worship anything along with Him and forbade you to worship idols and ordered you to pray, to speak the truth and to be chaste. If what you have said is true, he will very soon occupy this place underneath my feet and I knew it (from the scriptures) that he was going to appear but I did not know that he would be from you, and if I could reach him definitely, I would go immediately to meet him and if I were with him, I would certainly wash his feet.’ Heraclius then asked for the letter addressed by Allah’s Apostle

which was delivered by Dihya to the Governor of Busra, who forwarded it to Heraclius to read. The contents of the letter were as follows: “In the name of Allah the Beneficent, the Merciful (This letter is) from Muhammad the slave of Allah and His Apostle to Heraclius the ruler of Byzantine. Peace be upon him, who follows the right path. Furthermore I invite you to Islam, and if you become a Muslim you will be safe, and Allah will double your reward, and if you reject this invitation of Islam you will be committing a sin by misguiding your Arisiyin (peasants). (And I recite to you Allah’s Statement:)

‘O people of the scripture! Come to a word common to you and us that we worship none but Allah and that we associate nothing in worship with Him, and that none of us shall take others as Lords beside Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: Bear witness that we are Muslims (those who have surrendered to Allah).’ (3:64).

Abu Sufyan then added, “When Heraclius had finished his speech and had read the letter, there was a great hue and cry in the Royal Court. So we were turned out of the court. I told my companions that the question of Ibn-Abi-Kabsha) (the Prophet (ﷺ) Muhammad) has become so prominent that even the King of Bani Al-Asfar (Byzantine) is afraid of him. Then I started to become sure that he (the Prophet) would be the conqueror in the near future till I embraced Islam (i.e. Allah guided me to it).”

The sub narrator adds, “Ibn An-Natur was the Governor of llya’ (Jerusalem) and Heraclius was the head of the Christians of Sham. Ibn An-Natur narrates that once while Heraclius was visiting ilya’ (Jerusalem), he got up in the morning with a sad mood. Some of his priests asked him why he was in that mood? Heraclius was a foreteller and an astrologer. He replied, ‘At night when I looked at the stars, I saw that the leader of those who practice circumcision had appeared (become the conqueror). Who are they who practice circumcision?’ The people replied, ‘Except the Jews nobody practices circumcision, so you should not be afraid of them (Jews). ‘Just Issue orders to kill every Jew present in the country.’

While they were discussing it, a messenger sent by the king of Ghassan to convey the news of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) to Heraclius was brought in. Having heard the news, he (Heraclius) ordered the people to go and see whether the messenger of Ghassan was circumcised. The people, after seeing him, told Heraclius that he was circumcised. Heraclius then asked him about the Arabs. The messenger replied, ‘Arabs also practice circumcision.’

(After hearing that) Heraclius remarked that sovereignty of the ‘Arabs had appeared. Heraclius then wrote a letter to his friend in Rome who was as good as Heraclius in knowledge. Heraclius then left for Homs (a town in Syrian and stayed there till he received the reply of his letter from his friend who agreed with him in his opinion about the emergence of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the fact that he was a Prophet. On that Heraclius invited all the heads of the Byzantines to assemble in his palace at Homs. When they assembled, he ordered that all the doors of his palace be closed. Then he came out and said, ‘O Byzantines! If success is your desire and if you seek right guidance and want your empire to remain then give a pledge of allegiance to this Prophet (i.e. embrace Islam).’

(On hearing the views of Heraclius) the people ran towards the gates of the palace like onagers but found the doors closed. Heraclius realized their hatred towards Islam and when he lost the hope of their embracing Islam, he ordered that they should be brought back in audience.

(When they returned) he said, ‘What already said was just to test the strength of your conviction and I have seen it.’ The people prostrated before him and became pleased with him, and this was the end of Heraclius’s story (in connection with his faith). [Ref 1]

A Brief Benefit And Admonition In The Above The Narration For The Cartoonists

Abu Sufyan added, “By Allah! Had I not been afraid of my companions labelling me a liar, I would not have spoken the truth about the Prophet.

Imaam Ibn Hajr [rahimahullaah] stated in Fat-hul Baari that this shows that they [i.e. the pagan Arabs] used to abhor lying [or used to consider it to be an ugly deed]- either based on what they followed from the previous revealed laws [i.e. the path of Ibraaheem (alayhis-salaam) etc] or it was something abhorred in their customs. [An Excerpt. For further details, see Fat-hul Baari]

Indeed, the Arabs abhorred lying, but the cartoonists and those leaders who support them fabricate lies in he name of freedom of speech! These cartoonists and their leaders are the same ones claiming that they are civilized, yet they are not even decent enough to abandon lying in public. Also their double standards is clearly witnessed by everyone whilst they claim to be flag-bearers of freedom of speech. They strongly object to the statements of those who belittle their wives, but support those who desperately seek to belittle the noble Messenger [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam].

The Personality of the Believer – By Shaikh Abu Idrees [hafidhahullaah]

https://www.salafisounds.com/the-personality-of-the-believer-khutbah-by-abu-idrees/

All The Prophets and Messengers Were Muslims

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] stated about Ibraaheem:

And who turns away from the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. When his Lord said to him, “Submit (i.e. be a Muslim)!” He said, “I have submitted myself (as a Muslim) to the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).” And this (submission to Allah, Islam) was enjoined by Ibrahim (Abraham) upon his sons and by Ya’qub (Jacob), (saying), “O my sons! Allah has chosen for you the (true) religion, then die not except in the Faith of Islam as Muslims – Islamic Monotheism.” [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayaat 120-132]

And Allaah [The Exalted] stated that Yusuf [peace be upon him] said:

My Lord! You have indeed bestowed on me of the sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of dreams; The (only) Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Wali (Protector, Helper, Supporter, Guardian, etc.) in this world and in the Hereafter, cause me to die as a Muslim (the one submitting to Your Will and worshipping You alone), and join me with the righteous.” [Surah Yusuf. Aayah 101]

Allaah [The Exalted] stated that Moosaa [peace be upon him] said to his people:

يَـٰقَوۡمِ إِن كُنتُمۡ ءَامَنتُم بِٱللَّهِ فَعَلَيۡهِ تَوَكَّلُوٓاْ إِن كُنتُم مُّسۡلِمِينَ

O my people! If you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims (those who submit to Allah’s Will and worship Him alone). [Surah Yunus. Aayah 84]

Allaah [The Exalted] related that the magicians said to Fir’awn [i.e. after they believed in Moosaa]:

وَمَا تَنقِمُ مِنَّآ إِلَّآ أَنۡ ءَامَنَّا بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا لَمَّا جَآءَتۡنَا‌ۚ رَبَّنَآ أَفۡرِغۡ عَلَيۡنَا صَبۡرً۬ا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسۡلِمِينَ

And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims.” [Surah Al-A’raaf. Aayah 126]

Allaah [The Exalted] stated that Bilqees -the Queen of Yemen- said:

رَبِّ إِنِّى ظَلَمۡتُ نَفۡسِى وَأَسۡلَمۡتُ مَعَ سُلَيۡمَـٰنَ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

My Lord! Verily, I have wronged myself, and I submit (in Islam, together with Sulaiman (Solomon), to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). [Surah An-Naml. Aayah 44]

Allaah [The Exalted] stated regarding Prophets of Banee Israa’eel [alayhimus salaam]:

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَا ٱلتَّوۡرَٮٰةَ فِيہَا هُدً۬ى وَنُورٌ۬‌ۚ يَحۡكُمُ بِہَا ٱلنَّبِيُّونَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسۡلَمُواْ لِلَّذِينَ هَادُواْ

Verily, We did send down the Taurat (Torah) [to Musa (Moses)], therein was guidance and light, by which the Prophets, who submitted themselves to Allah’s Will, judged the Jews. [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayah 44]

Allaah [The Exalted] stated about the Messiah:

Then when ‘Iesa (Jesus) came to know of their disbelief, he said: “Who will be my helpers in Allah’s Cause?” Al-Hawariun (the disciples) said: “We are the helpers of Allah; we believe in Allah, and bear witness that we are Muslims (i.e. we submit to Allah).” Our Lord! We believe in what You have sent down, and we follow the Messenger [‘Iesa (Jesus)]; so write us down among those who bear witness (to the truth i.e. La ilaha ill-Allah – none has the right to be worshipped but Allah). [Surah Aal Imran. 52-53]

And Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَإِذۡ أَوۡحَيۡتُ إِلَى ٱلۡحَوَارِيِّـۧنَ أَنۡ ءَامِنُواْ بِى وَبِرَسُولِى قَالُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا وَٱشۡہَدۡ بِأَنَّنَا مُسۡلِمُونَ

And when I (Allah) put in the hearts of Al-Hawarieen (the disciples) [of ‘Iesa (Jesus)] to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: “We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims.” [Surah Al-Maa’idah. Aayah 111]

Therefore, this religion of the early and latter generations – the Prophet and their followers – is the religion of Islaam, and it is to single out Allaah in worship and not associate a partner to Him in worship, and worshiping Him alone in every era and place through obedience to His Messengers [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them]. One cannot be a  worshipper of Allaah based on that which is in opposition to what His Messengers brought, such as those about whom Allaah stated:

أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَڪَـٰٓؤُاْ شَرَعُواْ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱلدِّينِ مَا لَمۡ يَأۡذَنۢ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ

Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed. [Surah Ash-Shooraa. Aayah 21]

One cannot be a believer in Allaah, except by worshipping Him alone through obedience to His Messengers; and one cannot be a worshipper of Allaah, except the one who believes in all His Messengers and follows the Messenger who was sent in his era; so every Messenger was to be followed in his era until another Messenger comes after him and is followed. And whoever obeys the Messenger, then he has obeyed Allaah. Allaah [The Exalted] said: [وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ – We sent no Messenger, but to be obeyed by Allah’s Leave]. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 64]

Whoever seeks to make a differentiation between the Messengers by believing in some and disbelieving in others, then he is an unbeliever, just as Allaah [The Exalted] said:

Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers and wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers (by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, “We believe in some but reject others,” and wish to adopt a way in between. They are in truth disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment. And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them (Messengers), We shall give them their rewards, and Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayaat 150-152]

And when it is the fact that Muhammad [sallal laahu alayhi wasallam] is the seal of the Prophets and there will be neither be a Messenger after him nor is there anyone to bring something new from Allaah, then Allaah [Glorified and Exalted be He] has not ceased to revive the religion through the means that will necessitate its superiority, just as Allaah has promised in the Qur’aan. So Allaah manifests the excellence of Eemaan and its praiseworthy characteristics through which the disadvantages of disbelief and its corruption is known.

And one of the greatest means by way of which Eemaan and the religion are manifested, and the clarification of the true reality of that which the Messengers brought, is the appearance of opponents of the Messengers – the people who blatantly utter slander, just as Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies – Shayatin (devils) among mankind and jinns, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion (or by way of deception). If your Lord had so willed, they would not have done it, so leave them alone with their fabrications. (And this is in order) that the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter may incline to such (deceit), and that they may remain pleased with it, and that they may commit what they are committing (all kinds of sins and evil deeds, etc.). [Say (O Muhammad)] “Shall I seek a judge other than Allah while it is He Who has sent down unto you the Book (The Qur’an), explained in detail.” Those unto whom We gave the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] know that it is revealed from your Lord in truth. So be not you of those who doubt. And the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can change His Words. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. [Surah Al-An’aam. 112-115]

And Allaah [The Exalted] said:

And (remember) the Day when the Zalim (wrong-doer, oppressor, polytheist, etc.) will bite at his hands, he will say: “Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger ( Muhammad). “Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend! “He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Qur’an) after it had come to me. And Shaitan (Satan) is ever a deserter to man in the hour of need.” And the Messenger (Muhammad) will say: “O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Qur’an (neither listened to it, nor acted on its laws and orders). Thus have We made for every Prophet an enemy among the Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, criminals, etc.). But Sufficient is your Lord as a Guide and Helper. [Surah Al-Furqaan. Aayah 27-31]

This is because when the truth is wilfully rejected and confronted by those [beliefs, ideas, views, methodologies, principles, slogans etc] that are made to resemble truth but are falsehood in reality, then Allaah establishes clear signs and evidences for real truth through which it is made triumphant and falsehood is nullified. Allaah shows the clear proofs and evidences that establish the truth and the corruption of the eradicated false proofs that are in opposition to it. [An Excerpt from Al-Jawaabus Saheeh Lima Baddala Deenul Maseeh. Vol 1. Pages 18-20]

Ascribing oneself to the Muslim Ummah is a fundamental principle established in the Islamic legislation.

The Muslims are a just and balanced nation. Allaah said:

Thus We have made you [true Muslims – real believers of Islamic Monotheism, true followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah (legal ways)], a Wasat (just) (and the best) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger (Muhammad) be a witness over you. And We made the Qiblah (prayer direction towards Jerusalem) which you used to face, only to test those who followed the Messenger (Muhammad) from those who would turn on their heels (i.e. disobey the Messenger). Indeed it was great (heavy) except for those whom Allah guided. And Allah would never make your faith (prayers) to be lost (i.e. your prayers offered towards Jerusalem). Truly, Allah is full of kindness, the Most Merciful towards mankind. [Surah Al-Baqarah Ayah 143]

They are the best of all nations. Allaah said:

You [true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah (legal ways, etc.)] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar(polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden), and you believe in Allah. [Surah Aal Imran Ayah 110]

They are followers of a single religion agreed upon by all the Prophets [Ref 1: see further details in footnotes]. They ascribe themselves to it and unite upon it. Allaah said:

Truly! This, your Ummah [Sharia or religion (Islamic Monotheism)] is one religion, and I am your Lord, therefore worship Me (Alone). [21:92]

Allaah said:

And verily! This your religion (of Islamic Monotheism) is one religion, and I am your Lord, so keep your duty to Me. [Surah Al-Mu’minoon Ayah 52]

The believers are brothers in Religion and they give allegiance to one another. Allaah said:

The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic religion). So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy. [Surah Al-Hujuraat Ayah 10]

Allaah named us Muslims. Allaah said:

And strive hard in Allah’s Cause as you ought to strive (with sincerity and with all your efforts that His Name should be superior). He has chosen you (to convey His Message of Islamic Monotheism to mankind by inviting them to His religion, Islam), and has not laid upon you in religion any hardship, it is the religion of your father Ibrahim (Abraham) (Islamic Monotheism). It is He (Allah) Who has named you Muslims both before and in this (the Qur’an), that the Messenger (Muhammad) may be a witness over you and you be witnesses over mankind! So perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), give Zakat and hold fast to Allah [i.e. have confidence in Allah, and depend upon Him in all your affairs] He is your Maula (Patron, Lord, etc.), what an Excellent Maula (Patron, Lord, etc.) and what an Excellent Helper! [Surah Al-Hajj Ayah 78]

And from the branches of this ascription is ascription to Salafiyyah [i.e. the way of the pious predecessors], for indeed there is no prohibition from ascribing oneself to that; rather ascription to Salafiyyah is an ascription to Islaam based on what the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and his companions were upon. Certainly, it is not permissible that ascription to Salafiyyah is made to mean a party [of illegal partisanship] – loving and hating based on other than what the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] and his companions were upon, because indeed this is blameworthy.

Ascription to Islaam is done in order to differentiate oneself from the followers of other religions, ascription to the Sunnah is done in order to differentiate oneself from Bidah and the Shiites and ascription to Salafiyyah is done in order to differentiate oneself from the Innovated Dawah Methodologies, which are followed by the followers of the different (deviant) groups. So the Muslim needs to say about himself that he is a Muslim, Sunni, Salafi. [Source: Silsilah Ar-Rasaa’il Al-Manhajiyyah Fin Nus’hi Wal Irshaad Wat-taw’iyah’ pages 45-46]

The Religion of all the Prophets and Messengers [i.e. Tawheed] is One

Allaah [The Most High] said:

شَرَعَ لَكُم مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا وَصَّىٰ بِهِ نُوحًا وَالَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ

He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He ordained for Nuh (Noah), and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad)’’ [42:13]

Allaah mentions the first Messenger who was sent after Aadam, that is Nooh (alayhis-salaam), and the last of them is Muhammad (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam). Then He mentions those who came in between them who were the Messengers of strong will, namely Ibraaheem, Musa and Isa Bin Maryam [وَمَا وَصَّيْنَا بِهِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ ۖ أَنْ أَقِيمُوا الدِّينَ وَلَا تَتَفَرَّقُوا فِيهِ ۚ كَبُرَ عَلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ مَا تَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَيْهِ   [and that which We ordained for Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and ‘Iesa (Jesus) saying you should establish religion (i.e. to do what it orders you to do practically), and make no divisions in it (religion) (i.e. various sects in religion). Intolerable for the Mushrikun , is that to which you (O Muhammad) call them].

This above Ayah mentions all five (Prophets and Messengers), just as they are also mentioned in the Ayah in Surah Al-Ahzaab, where Allaah says:

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنكَ وَمِن نُّوحٍ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ

And (remember) when We took from the Prophets their covenant, and from you (O Muhammad), and from Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). [33:7]

The Message which all the Messengers brought was to worship Allaah Alone, with no partner or associate, as Allaah says:

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدُونِ

And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else).” [21:25]

And according to a Hadeeth [the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said]: ‘’We Prophets are brothers and our religion is one’’. [Fat’hul Baari 6:550]

In other words, the common bond between them is that Allaah Alone is to be worshipped, with no partner or associate, even though their laws may differ, as Allaah said:

لِكُلٍّ جَعَلْنَا مِنكُمْ شِرْعَةً وَمِنْهَاجًا

‘’To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way.’’ [5:48] Tafseer Ibn Katheer

Muhammad Is The Final Messenger and The Qur’aan Abrogates all Others Previous Laws

Allaah (The Most High) said:

مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِن رَّسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ ۗ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمًا

Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last (end) of the Prophets. And Allah is Ever All-Aware of everything. [33:40]

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) stated in Sharh Mumti that [the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam)] being the seal of the Prophets necessitates that he is the seal of the Messengers and that is due to the fact that ‘Every Messenger is a Prophet whereas not every Prophet is a Messenger’. [For further details see Sharh Mumti 1/250]

The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) also said: “By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, there is not one of this nation, Jew or Christian, who hears about me and dies without believing in what I have been sent, except that he will be one of the dwellers of Hell fire.” [Reported by Muslim’ Number 153]

The Qur’aan Abrogates All Other Previous Laws

Allaah (The Most High) said:

And We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this Qur’an) in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it and Mohayminan (trustworthy in highness and a witness) over it (old Scriptures). So judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging away from the truth that has come to you. To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way. If Allah willed, He would have made you one nation, but that (He) may test you in what He has given you; so strive as in a race in good deeds. The return of you (all) is to Allah; then He will inform you about that in which you used to differ. [Surah Al-Maa’idah Ayah 48]

Some Reminder By Imaam As-Sadi regarding the above Ayah

The Qur’aan gathers all the (good, excellence) in the previous books (i.e. before they were distorted). The Qur’aan contain an increase in all that will lead to the pleasure of Allaah in this life and the next, and the (most beloved and honourable) manners. The Qur’aan gathers every truth found in the other books, and it commands and urges mankind towards it. The Qur’aan is a book that gives news about the earlier and later generations. It contains (perfect) judgements and (perfect) wisdom. Whatever the Qur’aan declares to be truth in the previous Books is to be accepted, and whatever it rejects has to be rejected because it would be something that has been distorted and substituted by those who received it etc. [Excerpt from Tafseer As-Sadi]

Fir’awnic Behaviour! An Example of The Rage And Coercive Behaviour of Oppressive Callers to Disbelief When Their Followers Abandon Them And Obey The Creator!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said regarding the encounter between Moosaa [alayhis salaam] and the magicians:

They said: “O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw?” [Musa (Moses)] said: “Nay, throw you (first)!” Then behold, their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast. So Musa (Moses) conceived a fear in himself. We (Allah) said: “Fear not! Surely, you will have the upper hand. “And throw that which is in your right hand! It will swallow up that which they have made. That which they have made is only a magician’s trick, and the magician will never be successful, no matter whatever amount (of skill) he may attain.” So the magicians fell down prostrate. They said: “We believe in the Lord of Harun (Aaron) and Musa (Moses).” [Fir’aun (Pharaoh)] said: “Believe you in him [Musa (Moses)] before I give you permission? Verily! He is your chief who taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you on the trunks of date-palms, and you shall surely know which of us [I (Fir’aun – Pharaoh) or the Lord of Musa (Moses) (Allah)] can give the severe and more lasting torment.” They said: “We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us. So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world. “Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults, and the magic to which you did compel us. And Allah is better as regards reward in comparison to your [Fir’aun’s] reward, and more lasting (as regards punishment in comparison to your punishment).”

[Surah Taa Haa. Aayaat 65-73]

Allaah said that the magicians said to Fir’awn after believing in Moosaa and Haaroon [alayhis salaam]:

[قَالُواْ لَن نُّؤۡثِرَكَ عَلَىٰ مَا جَآءَنَا مِنَ ٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِى فَطَرَنَا‌ۖ – They said: “We prefer you not over the clear signs that have come to us, and to Him (Allah) Who created us] – Meaning, we do not prefer you over what we have been promised of reward and the closeness to that which we have been shown of clear signs, which shows that Allaah alone is the Lord and true deity to be worshipped, The Most Great, The Only Magnificent One and every other thing that is worshipped besides Allaah and considered as a lord is false. It is not possible that we will prefer you over the One who created and brought us into existence prior to our  state of non-existence; therefore [فَٱقۡضِ مَآ أَنتَ قَاضٍ‌ۖ إِنَّمَا تَقۡضِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَآ – So decree whatever you desire to decree, for you can only decree (regarding) this life of the world]- Meaning, do what you promise us, that you will cut off our hands and feet, and crucify us, because it will come to an end regardless its severity in this worldly life and cannot harm us thereafter when compared to Allaah’s punishment for the one who persist upon Kufr, for indeed the punishment will be great and continuous. This seems to be their reply to Fir’awn when he said to them, [وَلَتَعۡلَمُنَّ أَيُّنَآ أَشَدُّ عَذَابً۬ا وَأَبۡقَىٰ  – And you shall surely know which of us (I (Fir’aun) or the Lord of Musa (Allah) can give the severe and more lasting torment]. The statement of the magicians shows that it is incumbent upon a sensible person to compare the enjoyment of this life with the enjoyment of the afterlife, and compare the punishment in this life to punishment in the afterlife.

Then Allaah said that the magicians said:

إِنَّآ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّنَا لِيَغۡفِرَ لَنَا خَطَـٰيَـٰنَا ۗ

[Verily! We have believed in our Lord, that He may forgive us our faults] –

Meaning, so that Allaah forgive us our Kufr and sins, because Eemaan expiates kufr and repentance wipes away one’s previous sins. [وَمَآ أَكۡرَهۡتَنَا عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ ٱلسِّحۡرِ – And the magic to which you did compel us] – Meaning, forgive us the sin of the sorcery by way of which we opposed the truth. This shows that they did not have a choice in what they did, rather Firawn compelled them. And that which is apparent – and Allaah knows best – is that when Moosaa [alayhis salaam] admonished them saying:

[وَيۡلَكُمۡ لَا تَفۡتَرُواْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ڪَذِبً۬ا فَيُسۡحِتَكُم بِعَذَابٍ۬‌ۖ وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ] – Woe unto you! Invent not a lie against Allah, lest He should destroy you completely by a torment. And surely, he who invents a lie (against Allah) will fail miserably] [Taa Haa Aayah 61], it did have an effect on them and this is why they debated [i.e. regarding whether Moosaa (alayhis salaam) was upon truth or not], but then Fir’awn compelled and forced them to commit their plot. This is why they stated what Firawn stated before they arrived, saying:

[قَالُوٓاْ إِنۡ هَـٰذَٲنِ لَسَـٰحِرَٲنِ يُرِيدَانِ أَن يُخۡرِجَاكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِمَا وَيَذۡهَبَا بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ ٱلۡمُثۡلَى] – Verily! These are two magicians (i.e. Moosaa and Haaroon). Their object is to drive you out from your land with magic, and overcome your chiefs and nobles]. [Surah Taa Haa. Aayah 63]

So they committed that which was made up and forced on them. And maybe what settled in their hearts regarding hatred of opposing the truth with falsehood is that which earned them Allaah’s Mercy, Eemaan and the ability to repent.

[وَٱللَّهُ خَيۡرٌ۬ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ  – And Allah is better as regards reward in comparison to your [Fir’aun’s] reward, and more lasting] – Meaning, better as reward than what you promised us of status and rank, more lasting in reward and generosity, as opposed to what you [Firawn] say that “And you shall surely know which of us [I (Fir’aun – Pharaoh) or the Lord of Musa (Allah)] can give the severe and more lasting torment]- Meaning, he [Firawn] meant that his punishment is more severe and lasting than Allaah’s punishment.

Purification of The Heart Can Only Be Attained Through Giving Precedence to Allaah Over Desires!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

A slave is not afflicted with a punishment greater than the hardness of the heart and being distanced from Allaah. The farthest hearts from Allaah are the hardened hearts, and when the heart is hardened, the eyes become lacking in (discernment, perception, crying out of fear of Allaah etc). The hardness of the heart occurs due to four [affairs] when their limit is exceeded: Food, sleep, speech and mixing [with the people]. And just as the diseased body is not benefited by food and drink, likewise the heart is not benefited by admonitions when it is afflicted with [evil] desires. Whoever desires purification of his heart then let him give precedence to Allaah over his desires. The heart that is attached to desires is veiled from Allaah depending on the strength of its attachment to [such desires]. [Ref 1]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] also said:

The heart does get sick just as the body gets sick and its cure is found in repentance and bring keen [to obey Allaah and the Messenger etc]. The heart does become rusty just as a mirror becomes rusty, and remembrance of Allaah polishes it. The heart does become unadorned just as the body, and fear of Allaah beautifies it. The heart does suffer from discomfort just as the body suffers from discomfort due to hunger, and its food and drink are knowledge and awareness of Allaah, love of Allaah, reliance upon Allaah, turning sincerely to Allaah in repentance and obedience with Tawheed, and carrying out acts of obedience to Allaah. [Ref 2]

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah [rahimahullaah] said:

Know that every limb was created to perform a specific action, so a sign of its [i.e. any limb] sickness is when guilt is established due to performing [an evil] act. A sign of the hand’s sickness is when it is guilty of striking unlawfully; a sign of eye’s sickness is when it is guilty of staring unlawfully; a sign of the heart’s sickness is when it is guilty of not doing what it was created for, such as acquiring knowledge and wisdom; love of Allaah, worshiping Allaah alone and preferring that over every other desire. Therefore, if a person was to possess knowledge of everything but he does not know Allaah (Gloried be He), then it is as if he knew nothing.  The sign of knowing Allaah is to love Allaah, for whoever truly knows Allaah will love Allaah, and a sign of having love for Allaah is that one does not give precedence to anything over Allaah. So whoever prefers something from the beloved things over Allaah, then his heart is sick, just like the stomach that prefers mud and not bread, due to losing the desire for bread. [Ref 3]

Seek Allaah’s Refuge Against Sin And Debt!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Aa’isha [radiyallaahu-anhaa] narrated that the Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] used to invoke Allaah in the salaah [before the Tasleem] saying:

O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave and from the trial and affliction of Maseeh Ad-Dajjaal and from trial and affliction of life and death. O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from sins and from being in debt.” So somebody said to him, ‘’Why do you so frequently seek refuge with Allaah from being in debt?’’ The Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) replied, “A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks, and breaks promises whenever he makes (them)]”. [Ref 1]

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said: The Prophet [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] combined [in this supplication between seeking Allaah’s refuge] from sins and debt, for indeed sins necessitate loss in the afterlife and debt necessitates loss in the worldly life. [Ref 2]
