How does a Muslim Discern if a Calamity is Recompense for his Sins or a Test from Allāh? – Shaykh Sālih al-Fawzān

Shaykh Fawzān was asked about calamities which afflict the Muslim.

Noble Shaykh – May Allāh give you success – this questioner says,

How does a Muslim discern if a calamity that occurred to him, is due to his sins or a test from Allāh (The Mighty & Majestic)?

It is because of his sins, as Allāh said:

وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. (Ash-Shūra: 30)

And is there anyone who is free from sin?! Nobody is faultless; however the door of repentance is open, Alhamdulillāh.

Sharh Ighāfati al-Lahfān min Masā’id ash-Shaytān 18/05/1439

Back to Basics Revision – [The First Condition of The Shahaadah] – 1

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The first condition of the [Shahaadah – There is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah] is “Knowledge that necessitates a negation of Ignorance”. This means that one should know its meaning, what it negates and affirms, what it demonstrates in reality regarding the Oneness of Allaah, devotes all acts of worship to Allaah alone, sincerely devote all aspects of the religion to Allaah alone and disbelieve in everything that is worshipped besides Allaah. Therefore, “Knowledge that negates Ignorance” necessitates sound knowledge and an upright understanding of the statement [Laa Ilaaha Illal laah – There is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah] by way of which one is removed from the path of the ignorant ones, because this statement does not benefit the one who utters it without knowledge. Allaah [The Exalted] said: [فَٱعۡلَمۡ أَنَّهُ ۥ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِ‌ۗ – So know that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah, and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. (Surah Muhammad. 19)]. So in this verse, Allaah mentioned knowledge first because it is the foundation. (1)

The one who makes this testimony requires knowledge and truthfulness, and must act upon what he has testified to. The scholars say that knowledge of this testimony removes a person from the path of those Christians [who strayed after the departure of Prophet Eesaa (peace be upon him)] – those who act but have no knowledge, and from the path of those Jews [who strayed after the departure of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him)] – those who have knowledge but do not act, and truthfulness removes a person from the path of the hypocrites- those who claim that they believe but they have no certainty.

A person cannot be from the adherents of Tawheed [pure Islamic Montheism] until he fulfils the two pillars of Laa Ilaaha Illal laah: [لا إلهَ – There is no deity worthy of worship (i.e. Negation)] and [إلاَّ اللَّه – Except Alaah (i.e. Affirmation)]. The negation has to be comprehensive and the affirmation has to be specific – a comprehensive negation of all worship that is devoted to others besides Allaah and specific affirmation that only Allaah has the right to be worshipped. If a person utters the negation without the affirmation, then he is not an adherent of pure Islamic monotheism, and if he affirms without uttering the negation, then he is not an adherent of pure Islamic monotheism. If a person were to negate only by saying [لا إلهَ – There is no deity worthy of worship], then he is an atheist, and if he were to affirm that Allaah has the right to be worshipped without negating by saying that others do not have a right to be worshipped, then he is a polytheist. Therefore, one cannot be an adherent of Tawheed [pure Islamic Monotheism] until he testifies that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah.

And due to the mighty affair of this testimony [لا إلهَ إلاَّ اللَّه – There is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah], it is emphasised through the statement [وحْدهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لهُ – alone, without partner]. The affirmation is emphasised through the statement [وحْدهُ – alone] and the negation is emphasised through the statement [لاَ شَرِيكَ له – without partner]. (2)

Then Allaah [The Exalted] said: [وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۢبِكَ – And ask forgiveness for your sin]- Meaning, seek Maghfirah from Allaah [i.e. that Allaah erases your sins, hide them for you and protect you from the evil consequences of sins (3)], employ the means of attaining Maghfirah such as repentance and supplicating for Maghfirah, perform good deeds and abandon sins etc. [وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِ‌ۗ – And for believing men and believing women]- Meaning, because indeed due to their Eemaan, every Muslim [male Muslim] and Muslimah [female] owe them rights and one of those rights they are owed is that one supplicates for them and ask Allaah to forgive them (i.e. erase their sins). (4)

To All of Us Whose Parent, Parents or Other Loved Ones Have Preceded Us to The Afterlife – [Reminder to a Beloved Ustaadh]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

An-Nu’man Ibn Bashir [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The example of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever”. [Ṣaḥeeh Al-Bukhaari 6011]

The pain of a Muslim is felt by other Muslims, so what about the pain of one of our teachers – Ustaadh Abu Harun?! An adherent to Salafiyyah who advised us regarding some affairs of Salafiyyah and was one of those who first encouraged us to start making an effort in the Arabic language. So, we remind him and everyone who has lost a parent, parents or some loved ones that our Lord [The Exalted] said: [مَا أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ ۚ – No calamity befalls, but with the Leave [i.e. decision and Qadar (Divine Preordainments)] of Allah, and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart]. Alqamah [may Allaah be pleased with him] said: This (ayah) is about a person who is afflicted with a calamity and he knows that it is from Allaah. So he becomes pleased with what Allaah has decreed and submit to Allaah’s judgement, and he (or she) says, “This is Allaah’s decree. I believe in Allaah and we are pleased with Allaah’s decree”. So Allaah fills his heart with Eemaan and tranquillity, and he (or she) receives a great reward (i.e. due to his patience). (1)

The Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “If one of you is afflicted with a calamity, then let him reflect upon his calamity through me (i.e. my death), for indeed it is the greatest of calamities”. (2)

Imaam Al-Qurtubi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] reported in his Tafseer that Imaam Ibn Abdil Barr [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Indeed, he [i.e. the Messenger] spoke the truth, because indeed the calamity that results from his death is greater than every calamity that will afflict a Muslim after him until the day of judgement. The revelation stopped and Prophethood ceased (forever)”. (3) There is nothing more severe upon the Muslims than the death of Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] because indeed he was the most trustworthy and perfect guide for the Ummah. (4)

Finally, we say to our beloved Ustaadh [may Allaah preserve him and his loved ones] that Usama Bin Zayd [may Allaah be pleased with him] said: “While we were with Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him], one of his daughters sent for him to call him and inform him that her child or her son was dying. Allaah’s Messenger told the messenger-bearer to go back and tell her that [ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا أَخَذَ وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ عِنْدَهُ بِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّ – What Allah had taken belonged to Him, and to him belonged what He granted; and He has an appointed time for everything]. So you order her to exercise patience and seek reward from Allah. The message-bearer went back and said, “She adjures him to come to her”. He got up to go accompanied by Sa’d Bin Ubaadah, Mu’aadh Bin Jabal [may Allaah be pleased with them], and I also went along with them. The child was lifted to him and his soul was feeling as restless as if it was in an old (waterskin). His (Prophet’s) eyes welled up with tears. Sa’d said, “What is this, O Allaah’s Messenger!” He replied, “This is mercy which Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and Allaah shows mercy only to those of His servants who are merciful”. [Saheeh Muslim. Number 923]

Imaam An-Nawawi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] stated: This hadeeth is one of the greatest foundations of Islam, which includes many important affairs related to the fundamental principles and branches of the religion, upright behaviour, patience when facing all calamities, worries and illnesses and other distresses. [أن لله تعالى ما أخذ -What Allah had taken belonged to Him] – Meaning: Indeed, the entire universe belongs to Allaah [The Exalted], therefore, he did not take what is yours, but rather He took what belongs to Him in your possession. [وله ما أعطى – and to him belonged what He granted]- Meaning: Indeed, what He has bestowed on you is not outside his ownvership (or dominion), but rather it belongs to Him and He does what He wills [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections]. [وكل شيء عنده بأجل مسمى – and He has an appointed time for everything]- Meaning: Do not be in a state of anxiety, because indeed the one – Allaah- who took it away has brought about its appointed time, therefore, it is impossible to delay or advance its appointed time. If you know all of this, then be patient and seek reward through what has befallen you. And Allaah knows best. [Al-Adkaar 150]

Tremendous Reward For The Muslim Due to Exercising Patience After The Death of a Close Relative

Abu Hurairah [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported that Allaah’s Messenger [pace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Allaah says, ‘I have nothing to give but Paradise as a reward to my slave- a true believer of Islamic Monotheism, who, if I cause his dear friend amongst the people of the earth to die, remains patience and hopes for Allaah’s reward'”. (5) Imaam Abdul-Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Dear friend” – meaning, his beloved one. If he remains patient and hopes for Allaah’s reward, he will receive Paradise. (6)

May Allaah grant extensive mercy to Ustaadh Abu Harun’s mother and enter her into a noble entrance Aameen.

Reflection On One of The Supplications Made For The Deceased During a Janaazah Prayer

Those of us who are still alive ask Allaah:

O Allah! By Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if life is good for me, and let me die if death is good for me; O Allah! I ask You to grant me (the blessing of having) fear of You in private and public; And I ask you (to make me utter) a statement of truth in times of contentment and anger; And I ask You for moderation when in a state of wealth and poverty; And I ask you for blessings that never ceases; And I ask You for the coolness of my eye that never ends; And I ask You (to make me pleased) after (Your) decree; Aand I ask You for a life of (ease, comfort, tranquility etc) after death; I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face (i.e. in the Hereafter) and yearning to meet You without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me); O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of Eemaan, and make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others). (7)

O Allah! Rectify my religion for me, which is the safeguard of my affairs; rectify my worldly [affairs], wherein is my livelihood; and rectify my Afterlife to which is my return; and make life for me [as a means of] increase in every good and make death for me as a rest from every evil. Mighty Reward For The Old Man Due to His Sincere Intention and Strong Desire to Aid Truth and Its Adherents!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) asked, “Will they drive me out?” Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, “Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly”

Aa’Isha (the mother of the faithful believers) reported:

The commencement of the Divine revelation to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright daylight, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allah alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food likewise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “I do not know how to read.” The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’ Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, ‘I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?’ Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, ‘Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists), created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous.” (96.1, 96.2, 96.3)

Then Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) returned with the revelation and his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, “Cover me! Cover me!” They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, “I fear that something may happen to me.” Khadija replied, “Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.” Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza, who, during the pre-Islamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, “Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!” Waraqa asked, “O my nephew! What have you seen?” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, “This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) asked, “Will they drive me out?” Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, “Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly.” But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while. [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Number 3]

Regarding the statement of Waraqa [may Allaah have mercy upon him], I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) asked, “Will they drive me out?” Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, “Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly” – Meaning, wished that he was a young man when Islam would appear so that he can be more able to aid the Prophet. (1)

Is supplication made for Waraqa Bin Nawfil and to ask Allaah to have mercy upon him?” Yes, Al-Haakim reported in Al-Mustadrak (4211) in a Marfoo Hadeeth transmitted by Hishaam Ibn Urwah from his father, who transmitted from Aa’isha that the Prophet said : “Do not revile Waraqah, for indeed I saw that he has a garden or two gardens”. One of The Many Calamities of The Deceased Ikhwaani Innovator In Religious Affairs- Yusuf Al-Qaradaawee!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

https://video.link/w/7p35d

The Ikhwaani (see footnote a) Innovator in religious affairs, Yusuf Al-Qaradawi – (see footnote b) – stated, “Brothers, before I leave this place of mine, I would like to make a statement about the results of the Israeli elections. (see footnote c)

The Arabs were pinning all their hopes on Peres’s success. This is what we praise regarding Israel, we hope that our country will be like this country. Due to a group of few people one is removed (i.e. from office). It is the people who rule, there are no four nines or five nines that we know in our country- 99% out of a hundred. If Allaah had presented Himself to people, He would not have taken this percentage. What is this lying, cheating and deception, we salute Israel for what it has done”.

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saaleh Al-Uthaymeen [may Allaah have mercy upon him] commented on this statement of Yusuf Al-Qaradaawi as follows: I say this statement about elections in one of the countries and it was mentioned that a man got ninety-nine of the seats; then he (i.e. the utterer of this statement) said that “If Allaah had presented Himself to people, He would not have taken this percentage”. I seek refuge with Allaah. It is obligatory that he repents- repent from this, otherwise he is an apostate, because he declared the creation greater than the Creator, therefore, it is obligated on him to repent to Allaah – Allaah accepts repentance from His servants; otherwise it is obligated on the Muslim ruler to strike his neck (i.e. execute him for apostasy by the Muslim ruler). The Sharee’ah Ruling On Condolences, Specified Days of Mourning etc

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said: [إِنَّكَ لَا تَہۡدِى مَنۡ أَحۡبَبۡتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَہۡدِى مَن يَشَآءُ‌ۚ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَ – Indeed, (O Muhammad), you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He knows best those who are the guided]. [Surah Al-Qasas. Aayah 56]

Narrated Al-Musaiyab: When Abu Talib was on his death bed, Allah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] came to him and found with him, Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umaiya bin Al-Mughira. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “O uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, a sentence with which I will intervene on your behalf in the presence of Allaah (i.e. on yawmul qiyaamah).” So, Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umaiya said to Abu Talib, “Will you now turn away from religion of `Abdul Muttalib?” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) kept on inviting him to say that sentence while the other two kept on repeating their sentence before him till Abu Talib said – as the last thing he said to them- “I am on the religion of Abdul Muttalib,” and refused to say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah. So, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “By Allah, I will keep on asking Allah’s forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden (by Allah) to do so.” So Allah revealed: [مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَن يَسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ لِلۡمُشۡرِڪِينَ وَلَوۡ ڪَانُوٓاْ أُوْلِى قُرۡبَىٰ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمۡ أَنَّہُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ – It is not befitting for the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who believe that they should invoke (Allah) for forgiveness for pagans, even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief)]. [Surah at-Tawbah. Aayaah 113]
And then Allah revealed especially about Abu Talib: [إِنَّكَ لَا تَہۡدِى مَنۡ أَحۡبَبۡتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَہۡدِى مَن يَشَآءُ‌ۚ – Verily! You (O, Muhammad) guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He will]. [Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Number 4772]

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] commented on the Aayah:

[مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَن يَسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ لِلۡمُشۡرِڪِينَ وَلَوۡ ڪَانُوٓاْ أُوْلِى قُرۡبَىٰ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمۡ أَنَّہُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ – It is not befitting for the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who believe that they should invoke (Allah) for forgiveness for pagans, even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief)] – Meaning, it is neither befitting nor something good for the Prophet and those who believe in him “to seek forgiveness for the polytheists”, meaning, for those who disbelieve in Allah and worship others besides Him, “even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief)”, because indeed seeking forgiveness for them in such a situation is an error and carries no benefit. Therefore, it is not befitting for the Prophet and the believers to do this, because they (i.e. their relatives and others) died whilst ascribing partners to Allah in worship, or if known that they died in such a state, they are deserving of punishment and it is inevitable that they are to abide in hell forever- neither the intercession of those whom (Allaah has allowed to) intercede nor those who seek forgiveness for them will benefit. Furthermore, it is obligated on the Prophet and those who believe with him to agree with their Lord in what pleases Him and what angers Him. (1)

Anas [may Allaah be pleased with him] said, “A young Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] and he became sick; so the Prophet went to visit him. He sat near his head and asked him to accept Islam. The boy looked at his father, who was sitting there; the latter told him, “Obey Abul-Qasim” and the boy submitted to Allaah in Islam. The Prophet came out saying, “All praise is due to Allaah Who saved the boy from the Hell-fire.” (2)

Al-Allaamah Zayd Bin Haadi Al-Mad’khali [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “There is proof in this hadeeth about visiting the sick even if he is an unbeliever. And if visiting him is accompanied with inviting him to accept Islam, then this is radiance upon radiance, as the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] visited the boy who used to serve him and invited him to Islam, so Allaah wanted good for him in the Afterlife and saved him from the hell fire by his submission to Allaah in Islam. In this is proof that one cannot be saved from the fire except through entry into Islam. (3)

Burying a Deceased non-Muslim

Ali [may Allaah be pleased with him] reported: I said to the Prophet (ﷺ): “Your old and astray uncle has died”. He said, “Go and bury your father”, I said, “I will not bury him, indeed he died as a polytheist”. He said, “Go and bury him and then do not do anything until you come to me”. So I went, buried him and came to him. He ordered me (to take a bath), so I took a bath, and he supplicated for me with supplications that were more pleasing to me than everything on the earth”.

Some benefits – from this hadeeth – mentioned by Imaam Al-Albaanee [may Allaah have mercy upon him]: It is legislated (in Islam) for a Muslim to undertake the burial of his polytheist relative, and that does not contradict the hatred he has for him due to his state of Shirk (i.e. because his relative ascribes partners to Allaah in worship). Do you not see that Ali [may Allaah be pleased with him] initially refrained from burying his father based on his statement, “Indeed, he died as one who ascribes partners to Allaah in worship”, whilst thinking that undertaking his burial in such a situation is included in the forbidden types of loyalty mentioned in Allaah’s statement:

[لَا تَتَوَلَّوْا قَوْمًا غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ – Take not as allies the people who incurred the Wrath of Allah].

So, when the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] repeated the command to him, he hastened to comply with it, and left what he held at first. So, obedience is that a person abandons his opinion due to a command of his Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him]. It appears to me that a child burying his polytheist father or mother (after they’ve passed away) is the last thing that a child has to do in terms of good companionship with a polytheist father (or mother) in this worldly life. As for after the burial, he does not have the right to supplicate or seek forgiveness for him due to the clear statement of Allaah [The Exalted]:

[مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَن يَسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ لِلۡمُشۡرِڪِينَ وَلَوۡ ڪَانُوٓاْ أُوْلِى قُرۡبَىٰ – – It is not befitting for the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who believe that they should invoke (Allah) for forgiveness for pagans, even though they be of kin…]

And when it is the case this is the affair, then what is the situation of those who invoke for mercy and forgiveness – in newspapers and magazines – for some of the unbelievers in the death announcements for a few dirhams! Therefore, let him who fears Allaah take care of his Hereafter. (4)

Shaikh Abdul Waahid Abu Khadeejah [may Allaah preserve him] quotes Imaam Al-Albaanee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] who also stated: “I say: from this you come to know the error of some of the Muslims today who invoke the mercy of Allah and His pleasure upon some of the non-Muslims. And this is something being done plentifully by some [Muslim] journalists. Indeed I have heard that one of the heads of the Arabs who is well known for religiosity invoked the mercy of Allah upon Stalin the communist; both himself and his ideology is the from the severest, most vehement enemies of Islam! And that was a speech delivered in a radio broadcast by this leader upon the occasion of the death of Stalin. And it is not surprising that this ruling is unknown to the likes of this person. However, what is surprising is that some of the Islamic callers have also fallen into this, wherein one of them said in a treatise, “May Allah have mercy upon the [deceased] Bernard Shaw…” And some trustworthy narrators mentioned to me that one of the sheikhs would pray the funeral prayer over those who died from the esoteric (Bātinee) sect of Isma’īlees whilst he himself believes that they are non-Muslims, due to the fact that they don’t believe in the Prayer (Salāh) or the Hajj and they worship a human being! Yet alongside all this he prays over their deceased out of hypocrisy and wishing to impress them. And to Allah is the complaint and His aid is sought”. Condolence to a non-Muslim

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: There are three views; some scholars prohibited and some of permitted it, and some of them further explained that if the ruler sees a benefit in repelling evil and bringing about good, it is permissible for him to do that by congratulating, visiting the sick, condoling, or the like. If he considers that to be good for Muslims – to repel the evil of the enemies and the like, and they (i.e. the rulers) do not intend (or aim) to agree with their falsehood (i.e. not intentionally uttering or doing anything that opposes Islam whilst congratulating the unbelievers or sending condolences etc); but rather they intend (or aim) to benefit the Muslims, protect the Muslims from the plots of the enemies, eager to repel the harm (of the enemies) or so that the enemies accept Islam, then this is permissible. This is the statement that is based on the balanced path and the most upright (based on the Sharee’ah evidences), and that is to examine the affairs that will bring about welfare and the affairs that might cause harm. So, if affairs related to welfare necessitates that (i.e. to send condolences to the unbelievers), it is permissible to offer condolences, visit the sick and congratulate. Unless this is done to bring about welfare for the Muslims – neither out of loving falsehood nor hating truth, otherwise it is impermissible. And due to this, the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] visited the Jew who used to serve him when he was sick, whilst hoping that Allaah will guide him. So, when the Prophet invited him to Islam, he looked at his father, then his father said, “Obey Abul Qaasim” and thus he testified that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah and that Muhammad is Allaah’s Messenger. Allaah guided the Jew and the Prophet came out, saying, “All praise is due to Allaah Who saved the boy from the Hell-fire.” (5)

Al-Harb said: Ishaq narrated from Muslim Ibn Qutaybah, who narrated from Katheer Bin Abaan, who narrated from Ghaalib, who said that Al-Hasan said, “When you give condolence to a Dhimmi (i.e. a non-Muslim citizen of a Muslim State), say, ‘May nothing happen to you except good”.

Congratulations: The scholars warn against congratulations that might indicate that one is pleased with the religion of the unbelievers, such as the statement uttered by the ignorant people, “May Allaah protect or grant you wellbeing by way of your religion” and what is similar to this statement. As for the congratulation that is tantamount to uttering a specific statement of disbelief, this is unlawful based on the consensus of the scholars, such as congratulating them during their festivals, saying, “May this be a blessed holiday (or festival) for you” or “Congratulations on this holiday (i.e. related to religious practice, ritual, belief)”, because even if the one who utters this statement is safe from disbelief, it is one of the Muharramaat (unlawful deeds), and it is tantamount to congratulating him (i.e. a Christian) for prostrating to the Cross; rather this (congratulation) is a greater sin and more hateful – in the Sight of Allaah- than congratulating a person for drinking alcohol, committing murder, illegal sexual intercourse and what is similar. (6)

Specified National Days of Mourning On Behalf of Personalities

Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Indeed, it has become the custom of many Islamic countries in this era to specify – by way of an order- a period of three days of mourning, or less or more, for the kings and leaders together with the cessation (of work) in government departments and flags flown at half-mast. There is no doubt that this act is contrary to Muhammad’s Sharee’ah, and it contains an imitation of the enemies of Islam. (see footnote a) It has been reported in the authentic hadiths – transmitted from Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] – that prohibit specifying days of mourning and cautioning against it, except in the case of a wife, because she mourns her husband for four months and ten days. As for other than this in relation to specifying days of mourning, it is not allowed by the Sharee’ah, and there is nothing in the perfected Sharee’ah that allows it to be done for a king, leader, or other than them.

Indeed, during the lifetime of the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him], his son Ibrahim, his three daughters and other individuals died, but he did not specify days of mourning for them. During his time, leaders were killed, but he did not specify days of mourning for them, such as Zaid Bin Haritha, Jafar Bin Abi Talib and Abdullah Bin Rawahah.

Then the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] died- and he was the most honorable of the creation, the best of the Prophets, the master of the children of Adam, and the calamity that afflicts humankind because of his death is the greatest of calamities, but the Companions did not specify days of mourning for him. (see footnote b). Then Abu Bakr As-Siddiq died – and he is the best of the Companions, and the most honorable of creation after the Prophets, but days of mourning were not specified for him. Then Umar, Uthman and Ali were killed, and they are the best of creation after the Prophets and after Abu Bakr, but days of mourning were not specified for them. And likewise, all the Prophet’s companions passed away, but days of mourning were not specified for them. The Imaams of Islaam and the leaders of guidance amongst the scholars of the Taabi’een and those after them died, such as Sa’eed Ibn al-Musayyib, Ali Ibn Al-Husayn Zain Al-Aabideen and his son Muhammad Bin Ali, Umar Bin Abdil Azeez, Az-Zuhree, Imaam Abu Haneefah and his two companions, Imaam Maalik Bin Anas, Al-Awzaa’ee, Ath-Thawree, Imaam Ash-Shaafi’ee, Imaam Ahmad Bin Hanbal, Ishaaq Ibn Rahaawayh and other than them amongst the Imaams of knowledge and guidance; but days of mourning were not specified for them.

If this was good, the righteous predecessors would have preceded in doing so, and all good is in following them, and all evil is in opposing them. The Sunnah of Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him]-, which we have already mentioned- shows that what our righteous predecessors did by not specifying days of mourning for other than non-spouses is the truth and what is correct; and that what people do today by specifying days of mourning for kings and leaders is a matter that contradicts the pure Sunnah together with the many harms that it entails- the disruption of welfare and the imitation of the enemies of Islam. And due to this, one should know that what is obligated on the Muslim leaders and notables is to abandon specifying days of mourning and follow the path of our righteous predecessors – the Companions of the Prophet and those who followed their path. It is incumbent upon the people of knowledge to warn people of this, notify them and acquaint them with this, in fulfillment of the duty of advice, cooperation upon righteousness and piety. (7)

The Ruling On Minutes Silence – By The Scholars of Lajnah Daa’iamah

What some people do by standing for a while in silence – in order to pay homage to martyrs or dignitaries, or people of status, or to honor and show respect to their souls and specify mourning for them – is one of the evils and the initiated innovations in religious affairs, which was neither present in the Prophet’s era [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] nor during the era of the companions, nor during the era of the righteous predecessors. It is not in agreement with the etiquettes of pure Islamic Monotheism and sincerity in exalting Allaah; but rather some of the Muslims who are ignorant about their religion follow those – amongst the unbelievers – who innovated it, blindly follow them in their customs, exaggeration of the status of their leaders and notables -whether dead or alive. Indeed, the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] forbade us from imitating them. (see footnote c) And what is known in Islam from the rights of its adherents is to supplicate for the dead Muslims, give alms on their behalf, mention their virtues and refrain from speaking ill of them (see footnote d), and many of the etiquettes which Islam has clarified, urge the Muslim to observe them, whilst dealing with his brothers, living and dead; but it does not include standing in mourning with silence in order to pay homage to the martyrs or dignitaries; rather this is from that which the principles of Islam reject. (8)

Finally, we ask Allaah to grant us the Tawfeeq to adhere to the pure Sunnah and distance from everything that opposes it. However, the above does not negate living with non-Muslims with fine conduct and fulfilling covenants. Must read following articles:

[10.3] What is Our Call? A Declaration From Masjid Al-Furqan and Masjid Abi Hurairah to Hizbiyyoon of Markaz Tawheed!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said: Salafiyyah is to follow the path of the Salafus Saaleh (pious predecessors) – the Sahaabah, the Taa’bi’een and the virtuous generations.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

[وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلۡأَنصَارِ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُم بِـإِحۡسَـٰنٍ۬ رَّضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡہُمۡ وَرَضُواْ عَنۡهُ – And the first to embrace Islaam of the Muhaajiroon (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansaar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhaajiroon) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allaah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him].

And Allaah [The Most High] said about the Sahaabah:

[إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَهَاجَرُواْ وَجَـٰهَدُواْ بِأَمۡوَٲلِهِمۡ وَأَنفُسِہِمۡ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاوَواْ وَّنَصَرُوٓاْ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ بَعۡضُہُمۡ أَوۡلِيَآءُ بَعۡضٍ۬‌ۚ – Verily, those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard and fought with their property and their lives in the Cause of Allaah as well as those who gave (them) asylum and help, – these are (all) allies to one another [8:72] – up to His statement- [وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنۢ بَعۡدُ وَهَاجَرُواْ وَجَـٰهَدُواْ مَعَكُمۡ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ مِنكُمۡ‌ۚ – And those who believed afterwards, and emigrated and strove hard along with you, (in the Cause of Allaah) they are of you]. [8:75 ]

Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all Imperfections] said in Surah Al -Hashar:

And there is also a share in this booty) for the poor emigrants, who were expelled from their homes and their property, seeking Bounties from Allaah and to please Him. And helping Allaah (i.e. helping His religion) and His Messenger (Muhammad). Such are indeed the truthful (to what they say); And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them.” [59:8-9]- up until His [The Most High] statement: [وَٱلَّذِينَ جَآءُو مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَلِإِخۡوَٲنِنَا ٱلَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِٱلۡإِيمَـٰنِ – And those who came after them say: “Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith].

The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “This ummah will split into seventy three sects; all of them will enter the fire except one. They said, ‘Which is that (saved sects) O Messenger of Allaah? He replied, ‘Those who are upon that which I and my companions are upon today'”. The Prophet said, “Adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Khulafaa after me”. (Refer to “Footnote A” about the seventy-two deviant sects and how to deal with them)

Therefore, Salafiyyah is the Methodology that has been obligated on us to follow and we are to abandon all other methodologies that are in opposition to it. The [people of salafiyyah] are the saved sect, Ahlus Sunnah Wal-Jamaa-ah, and they are the aided group till the Day of Judgement. May Allaah include us amongst them. However, ascription to this methodology requires knowledge of its fundamentals in order that the Muslim may adhere to it. (One is) required to have knowledge of the other methodologies that are in opposition to Salafiyyah in order to avoid them. Therefore, Salafiyyah upon the path of the pious predecessors has to be [followed] upon knowledge and clear sightedness. It is not enough for the person to ascribe himself to [salafiyyah] whilst being ignorant of it or being in opposition to it. For that reason Allaah [The Most High] said:[ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُم بِـإِحۡسَـٰنٍ۬ – And also those who followed them exactly (in Faith)]. They follow them with knowledge- they neither fall into extremism nor negligence. They neither exaggerate nor fail to give the affair its right- like those who ascribe themselves to the madhabs of the four imams [Abu Haneefah, Maalik, Shaa-fi’ee and Ahmad] whilst being in opposition to them in Aqeedah and Ibaadaat. And like the one who ascribes himself to the methodology of the Salaf, yet he either declares the Muslims to be disbelievers or rebels against the Muslim rulers, or he follows other directions towards extremism. This person is not a Salafi, rather he is named a khaariji or a Mutazili. Or like the one who ascribes himself to the methodology of the salaf, but speaks with the statement of the Mur’ji’a in the affair of Eemaan and Kufr. This is not salafiyyah. Therefore, it is obligatory to pay attention to this affair and not to mix the Salafi methodology with the other methodologies that are in opposition to it, and then say: ”all these methodologies [including the Salafi methodology] are not from Islaam.” This is recklessness in speech, an oppressive judgement and deception against the people. The True Reality of This Worldly Life!

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ ثُمَّ يَتَوَفَّىٰكُمْ ۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰٓ أَرْذَلِ ٱلْعُمُرِ لِكَىْ لَا يَعْلَمَ بَعْدَ عِلْمٍۢ شَيْـًٔا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ قَدِيرٌ

And Allah has created you and then He will cause you to die, and of you there are some who are sent back to senility, so that they know nothing after having known (much). Truly! Allah is All-Knowing, All-Powerful. [Surah An-Nahl. Aayah 70]

Allaah (The Most High) said: [أَيْنَمَا تَكُونُوا يُدْرِكْكُمُ الْمَوْتُ وَلَوْ كُنْتُمْ فِي بُرُوجٍ مُشَيَّدَةٍ – Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!] [Surah An-Nisaa. Aayah 78]

Allaah (The Most High) said:

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
عَلَىٰ أَنْ نُبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable. To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? [Surah Al-Waaqi’ah. Aayaat 60-62]

Allaah [The Mighty and Majestic] said:

وَهُوَ الْقَاهِرُ فَوْقَ عِبَادِهِ ۖ وَيُرْسِلُ عَلَيْكُمْ حَفَظَةً حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَكُمُ الْمَوْتُ تَوَفَّتْهُ رُسُلُنَا وَهُمْ لَا يُفَرِّطُونَ

He is the Irresistible, Supreme over His slaves, and He sends guardians (angels guarding and writing all of one’s good and bad deeds) over you, until when death approaches one of you, Our Messengers (angel of death and his assistants) take his soul, and they never neglect their duty. [Surah Al-An’aam. Aayah 61]

Allaah [The Exalted] said:

It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply. [Surah Az-Zumar. Aayah 42]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Verily the likeness of (this) worldly life is as the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, so by it arises the intermingled produce of the earth of which men and cattle eat until when the earth is clad with its adornments and is beautified, and its people think that they have all the powers of disposal over it, Our Command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a clean-mown harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday! Thus do We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, laws, etc.) in detail for the people who reflect.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is Able to do everything. [Surah Al-Kahf]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

Beautified for men is the love of things they covet; women, children, much of gold and silver (wealth), branded beautiful horses, cattle and well-tilled land. This is the pleasure of the present world’s life; but Allah has the excellent return (Paradise with flowing rivers, etc.) with Him. Say: “Shall I inform you of things far better than those? For Al-Muttaqun (the pious – see V.2:2) there are Gardens (Paradise) with their Lord, underneath which rivers flow. Therein (is their) eternal (home) and Azwajun Mutahharatun (purified mates or wives) [i.e. they will have no menses, urine, or stool, etc.], And Allah will be pleased with them. And Allah is All-Seer of the (His) slaves”. [Soorah Aal Imraan’ Aayaat 14-15]

Allaah [The Most High] said: [وَيَوۡمَ يَحۡشُرُهُمۡ كَأَن لَّمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا سَاعَةً۬ مِّنَ ٱلنَّہَارِ يَتَعَارَفُونَ بَيۡنَہُمۡ‌ۚ – And on the Day when He shall gather (resurrect) them together, (it will be) as if they had not stayed (in the life of this world and graves, etc.) but an hour of a day. They will recognise each other. [Surah Yunus. Verse 45]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

He (Allah) will say: “What number of years did you stay on earth?” They will say: “We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep account.” He (Allah) will say: “You stayed not but a little, if you had only known! [Surah Al-Mu’minoon. Verses 112-114]

Allaah [The Most High] said:

The Day when the Trumpet will be blown (the second blowing): that Day, We shall gather the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, etc.) Zurqa: (blue or blind eyed with black faces); In whispers will they speak to each other (saying): “You stayed not longer than ten (days).” We know very well what they will say, when the best among them in knowledge and wisdom will say: “You stayed no longer than a day!” [Surah Taha. Verse 102-104] And Allaah’s Aid is sought and upon Him we place our reliance!

Allaah [The Most High] informed us that the believer amongst the people of Pharaoh said:

[يَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَتَـٰعٌ۬ وَإِنَّ ٱلۡأَخِرَةَ هِىَ دَارُ ٱلۡقَرَارِ – O my people! Truly, this life of the world is nothing but a (quick passing) enjoyment, and verily, the Hereafter that is the home that will remain forever”. [Surah Ghaafir. Verse 39]

The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said: “What is the world to me? What am I to the world? Verily, the example of this world and myself is that of a rider who seeks shade under a tree, then he moves on and leaves it behind”. [Reported by Imaam Ahmad 3701 and others]

The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “What is the example of this worldly life in comparison to the Hereafter other than one of you dipping his finger in the sea? Let him see what he brings forth”. [Reported by Imaam Muslim 2858]

Mujaahid [may Allaah have mercy upon him] narrated that Abdullaah Ibn Umar [may Allaah have mercy upon him and his father]said, “Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] took hold of my shoulder and said, ‘Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler’. The sub narrator added, ‘Ibn Umar Used to say, ‘If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death’” [Al-Bukhaari. Number 6416]

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] said: The Muslim is like a stranger in this worldly life: The stranger is one residing in a country other than his country. The worldly life is not the Muslim’s permanent place of residence; rather the Muslim’s permanent place of residence is paradise. He is in this worldly life to work for entry into Paradise. He takes what is needed from this world to aid him work for entry into paradise.

The Muslim is like a traveler in this worldly life: The traveler takes rest during his journey and then carries on travelling. He does not reside permanently in that place he stopped to take a rest. In the life of this world the Muslim is that traveler. In reality he is not a permanent resident in the worldly life because his time in it is very little. His nights and days take him towards the afterlife.

What is befitting the Muslim with regards to the days, nights, and his health etc! If you reach the morning do not delay good deeds till in the evening because it maybe that you will not reach the evening. If you reach the evening do not delay good deeds till the morning because it maybe that you will not reach the morning. Do not delay repentance and righteous deeds till another time.

As long as a person is in a state of good health and wellbeing, he is able to perform fasting, the night prayer etc; but when he becomes sick he is not able to perform fasting, the night prayer etc. Therefore, as long as Allaah has given you good health, then hasten towards righteous actions because a time will come in which you will be unable to perform them-either due to illness, old age, or senility. Prepare for death and what is to come after it. Allaah gave you this life in order that you busy yourself with what will benefit you in the afterlife. So do not spend your life in play and jest. [An Excerpt from ‘Al-Minhatur Rabbaaniyyah Fee Sharh Al-Arba’een. pages 285-287]

Imaam As-Sadi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: The sensible person is in a position to have the Baaqiyaat As-Saalihaat as provision [i.e. the good righteous deeds that last and are better in the sight of Allah for reward and better in respect of hope in the Hereafter] together with his share in the worldly life with ease- by seeking aid in going out in the morning and midday and something of the night time. This is the foundation upon which he places his worldly affairs and the means to [accomplishing them]. And even when such [affairs] come to him late at night, he would pray and seek aid from his Lord and asks for that which brings about goodness in his religious and Worldly affairs.

He begins his day with good – recitation of the Qur’aan and acts of worship- to which one devotes himself in the morning; performs the five daily prayers in their earliest times and that which Allah makes easy for him to perform of good deeds, such as [optional] prayer, recitation of the Qur’aan, remembrance of Allah, seeking knowledge and other than that. He engages his tongue in the Remembrance of Allah and in seeking forgiveness.

He pursues the means by way of which one seeks his livelihood such as trade, production of goods, farming and what is similar to them, whilst seeking the aid of his Lord in that. He suffices himself with the permissible means and turns away from that which Allaah has made unlawful. The intent behind this is to fulfil the individual obligations; to be (upon) self-sufficiency and having little or no need of the creation. If he does this or something closer to it, the result will be goodness and he will gain abundant reward [for the afterlife]. Also he does not forget his [lawful] share in the worldly life and it may be that Allah will bless him with contentment, which is true richness by way of which a good life is attained. [An Excerpt from Noorul Basaa-ir Wal Albaab Fee Ahkaam Al Ibaadaat, Wal Mu-aamalaat, Wal Huqooq, Wal Aadaab. Page: 65]

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: The greatest pleasure in the Afterlife is the pleasure of seeing Allaah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections], just as it has been reported in the authentic hadeeth, “They [i.e. the people of paradise] will not be granted anything that is more beloved to them than seeing Him [i.e. Allaah]”. This is the fruitful outcome of knowing Him and worshipping Him in this worldly life. The best thing in this worldly life is to have knowledge and awareness of Him and the best thing in the Afterlife is to see Him. [Majmoo Al-Fataawaa. 14/163]

[10.2] The Affair of Markaz Tawheed: [A Principle Regarding Splitting, Takfeer, Tabdee and Cooperating With Ahlul Bidah!]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The following article is a further clarification regarding the stance of Masjid al-Furqan and Masjid Abi Hurairah regarding Splitting, Takfeer and Tabdee, so that both the Kharijites and proponents of Tamyee (footnote a) in Stoke On Trent understand that are not upon their path.

The Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, ”The Jews were divided into seventy-one sects, one of which is in Paradise and seventy are in the Fire. The Christians were divided into seventy-two sects, seventy-one of which are in the Fire and one is in Paradise”.

By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, my Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects, one of which will be in Paradise and seventy-two will be in the Fire”. It was said, “O Messenger of Allaah! Who are they?” He said, “Al-Jamaa’ah”.(1) In another narration, the Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “My Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects, all of them will be in the Fire except for one, and that is the Jamāʿah”. It was said, “And who are they, O Allāh’s Messenger?” He responded, “That which I and my Companions are upon today”.(2)

Hafs Bin Humaid [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “I said to Abdullaah Ibnul Mubaarak [may Allaah have mercy upon him], ‘How many sects has this Ummah spilt into?’ So he said, ‘The foundation of the sects are four: The shia, the hurooriyyah (i.e. khawaarij), the qadariyyah and the murji’ah. The shia (further) split into twenty-two sects; the hurooriyyah (further) split into twenty-one sects; the qadariyyah (further) split into sixteen sects and the murji’ah (further) split into thirteen sects’”. [Al-Ibaanah of Ibn Battah 1/379-380]

Question to Imaam Abdul Azeez Bin Baaz [may Allaah have mercy upon him]: What is the intent behind the Messenger’s ﷺ statement when he spoke about the Ummah in the hadith: “All of them (the sects) are in the fire except one” and what is that one?. Also, will all the other 72 (deviant) sects be in the fire for eternity? Benefit us.

The answer: The prophet ﷺ said, “The Jews split into 71 sects, meaning all of them are astray and their affair ruined, except one. The Christians split into 72 sects, meaning all of them are astray and their affair ruined, except one. And this Ummah will split into 73 sects- all of them in the fire, except one. This one group is Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah [those who firmly adhere to the authentic Prophetic Sunnah and are united upon that] – the companions of the Prophet and those who follow them exactly in faith, the adherents to pure Islamic monotheism and sound faith.

As for the other 72 sects that have been threatened with the fire, among them is one who is a disbeliever (footnote b), among them is one who is a sinner and among them is one about whom it is established with clear evidence that he is an innovator in religious affairs. So, the one – among them – that dies in a state of disbelief (footnote c) will be in the fire for eternity, the one that dies in a state of adherence to religious innovation that is lesser than major disbelief (footnote d) or sins is under the will of Allah, while still threatened with the fire. So, based on this it is known that not all of them are disbelievers, but rather among them is a disbeliever and other than him among the sinners and the innovators in religious affairs. (0.1)

Tabdee: (Declaring a Muslim An Innovator In Religious Affairs)

Al-Allaamah Zayd Bin Haadee al-Madkhalee [rahimahullaah] was asked: Is there a difference between the verdict against a person that he is from Ahlul Bidah and the verdict that he is a Mubtadi [innovator in religious affairs]? And does the verdict against a person that he is not a Salafi or that he is a Hizbi necessitate that he is a Mubtadi? Can you please shed light on this affair?

Answer: Firstly, you should know that indeed Ahlus Sunnah are people who fear of Allaah. They neither make Takfeer [i.e. declare a person a disbeliever], Tafseeq [i.e. declare a person a sinner] and Tabdee [declare a person an innovator] except against the one who deserves it based on the evidences in the Book and the Sunnah, and the understanding of the pious predecessors of this Ummah.

Secondly, you should know that the people of desires and misguidance are (categorized into) those who are followed and those who follow. Indeed, those who are followed are the ones who set up the various principles of Bidah and call to their innovation in religion and misguidance, and they will carry their burden of sins and the burden of the sins of those whom they misguided without knowledge, as it is clearly stated in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.

As for the followers of a leader from amongst the people of desires, then in most cases they are of two categories:
The First Category: Those who possess knowledge, but they harbour evil intentions, so they yield to Satan, desires and the urge of the evil soul. They follow the people of misguidance and oppose the callers to guidance (in that which) Allaah sent His Messenger Muhammad [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] with.

The Second Category: Their share of knowledge is little, so the people of desires take advantage of them and they become members of their group. They convince them that what they call them to is the manifest truth and that what their opponents are upon is falsehood. And they convey to them a huge number of affairs that resemble the truth but are falsehood in reality, in order to deceive them and submerge them into misguidance. As for those who are followed-those who set up principles of bidah and call the people to their bidah and misguidance, then indeed they are marked with the bidah they innovated and call the people to, and for them there is no honour.

As for the followers of the people of desires, it is as I have stated that they are of two categories in most cases. They are to be called to the Sunnah and to cling to it, and that they reject the bidah they have been deceived by and have yielded to. And if they respond to the call of truth through knowledge and action, and reject that which the people of desires and innovation call them to, then this is what is desired and it is a praiseworthy aim. If they reject the advice of the advisers and bargain with falsehood at the expense of truth, and give preference to innovation over the Sunnah, then they deserve to be assigned the term Mubtadi [innovator]. (3) Read here: Shaikh Rabee: Establishment of Proof in Declaring a Person to be an Innovator: https://abukhadeejah.com/shaikh-rabee-establishment-of-proof-in-declaring-a-person-to-be-an-innovator/

Takfeer (Takfeer Declaring a Muslim to be Outside The Fold of Islam)

Footnote a: [Kharijites: http://www.kharijites.com/kj/ ] [Tamyee: http://www.salafiebooks.com/se/dld.cfm?a=wngwbh]

[Footnotes b and c]: NB: Takfeer – declaring that a Muslim left the fold of Islaam is a judgement that can only be given by the upright scholars and none else:  https://www.manhaj.com/manhaj/articles/obkwf-takfir-and-the-excuse-of-ignorance-shaykh-saalih-al-fawzaan.cfm

[Footnote d]: NB: All religious innovations are evil, but there are those that will exit a person from the fold of Islaam (Bida’atul Mukaffirah) and those that do not exit a person from the fold of Islaam (Bida’atul Mufassiqah). Al-Allaamah Rabee Bin Haadee Al-Madkhalee [may Allaah preserve him] was asked whether there is a difference between Bidah Al-Mukaffirah and Bidah Al-Mufassiqah; so he replied that there is Bidah Mukaffirah, such as rejecting the Ruyah (i.e. denying that the believers will see Allaah in the afterlife); rejecting Allaah’s Uluww [i.e. denying that Allaah is above his creation –Allaah ascended over the Throne in a way that benefits his majesty)]; invoking other than Allaah; offering slaughtered sacrifice (i.e. animals) to other than Allaah etc. These are affairs of Bidah Al-Mukaffirah (the bidah that is tantamount to disbelief). But we do not make Takfeer of the people who commit this type of Bidah until we establish the proofs against them. That is because some of them (i.e. the people who fall into these affairs) carry doubts and are far away from the era of Prophethood and its light (i.e. guidance). So they fall into the likes these innovations. Rejecting the Ruyah is disbelief; rejecting Allaah’s Uluww is disbelief; the saying that the Qur’aan is created is disbelief-major disbelief. But this person, -[who testifies that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah, and he prays, observes fasting, wants paradise and believes in that] -received the doubts of the people of falsehood, so he falls into the likes of these affairs (i.e. these innovations that are tantamount to disbelief). So we say to him: You have fallen into disbelief and the evidence is this and this, and we clarify for him. So if Allaah grants him Tawfeeq and he returns to the truth, then all praise is due to Allaah. But if not, we declare him a disbeliever after establishing the proofs against him. As for Bidah Al-Mufassiqah it is other than this (i.e. it is not at the level of that which is tantamount to disbelief)…[A paraphrased excerpt. see http://www.rabee.net/ar/questions.php?cat=26&id=484 ]

Can Ahlus Sunnah Cooperate With Ahlul Bidah?

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al-Fawzaan [may Allaah protect him] was asked: I heard in one of the Islamic channels from one of the thinkers, saying: “It is from wisdom to cooperate with Islamic groups against (secularism) and others”. Is this speech correct?”

Answer: No this is not correct! We do not cooperate with the people falsehood. We do not cooperate with the misguided sects, rather we cooperate with our brothers who are steadfast upon obedience to Allaah and with them upon the sound methodology. As for those who have deviated from the right path and the misguided ones, and those who oppose Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah, we do not cooperate with them, because this cooperation is tantamount to cooperation upon sin and transgression and a justification of what they are upon. https://video.link/w/cI81d

[10.1] The Affair of Markaz Tawheed: [A Principle Regarding Unity, Splitting and Cooperating With Ahlul Bidah]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imaam Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhaab [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said: “Indeed, they (the people of the era of pre-Islaamic ignorance) divided into (sects) in their Religion, as Allaah (The Exalted) stated:

[كُلُّ حِزۡبِۭ بِمَا لَدَيۡہِمۡ فَرِحُونَ – Each sect rejoicing in that which is with it] [Surah Ar-Rum. Aayah 32]

And likewise they were divided in their worldly affairs and they regarded that to be the right thing to do. So Allaah commanded Ijtimaa (unity and agreement) in the Religion, saying:

He (Allaah has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He ordained for Nýh (Noah), and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam)), and that which We ordained for Ibrahim (Abraham), Mýsa (Moses) and ‘Iesa (Jesus) saying you should establish religion (i.e. to do what it orders you to do practically), and make no divisions in it (religion) (i.e. various sects in religion). [Surah Ash-Shuraa. Aayah 13]

And He [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] said:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَرَّقُواْ دِينَہُمۡ وَكَانُواْ شِيَعً۬ا لَّسۡتَ مِنۡہُمۡ فِى شَىۡءٍ‌ۚ

Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you [O Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam)] have no concern in them in the least. [Surah Al-An’aam. Aayah 159]

And Allaah forbade us (Muslims) from being like them, saying:

[وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَٱخۡتَلَفُواْ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتُ‌ۚ – And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. [Surah Aal Imran. Aayah 105]

And Allaah forbade us (Muslims) from splitting into (sects) in the Religion, saying:

[وَٱعۡتَصِمُواْ بِحَبۡلِ ٱللَّهِ جَمِيعً۬ا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُواْ‌ۚ – And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah, and be not divided among yourselves] [Surah Aal Imran. Aayah 103]

Al-Allaamah Saaleh Al- Fawzaan [may Allaah preserve him] stated in his explanation of the above statement:

This is the second affair of those affairs which the Messenger [sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam] was in opposition against the people of Al-Jaahiliyyah; and that is the people of Jaahiliyyah used to be divided in their Religious and worldly (affairs). Their (state of affairs) was characterized with splitting and differing, as He (Alaah) said:

وَلَا تَكُونُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِڪِينَ
مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ فَرَّقُواْ دِينَهُمۡ وَڪَانُواْ شِيَعً۬ا‌ۖ كُلُّ حِزۡبِۭ بِمَا لَدَيۡہِمۡ فَرِحُونَ

And be not of Al-Mushrikun (the polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah). Of those who split up their religion and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the religion (Bid’ah), and followed their vain desires], each sect rejoicing in that which is with it. [Surah Ar-Rum. Aayaat 31-32]

This is a characteristic of the people of the era of pre-Islaamic ignorance – amongst the Jews, Christians and idol worshippers. All the religions of the Pre-Islamic era of ignorance were upon this way- divided in their religion, and each of them had a religion they called to. The Christians called to Christianity and the Jews called to Judaism, and each of these two religions belied the religion of the other, as He (Allaah) said:

The Jews said that the Christians follow nothing (i.e. are not on the right religion); and the Christians said that the Jews follow nothing (i.e. are not on the right religion); though they both recite the Scripture. Like unto their word, said (the pagans) who know not. [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 113]

The pagans are those ones who do not know, because they neither had a Book nor a religion revealed from the heavens, and they also belied and opposed each another. [فَٱللَّهُ يَحۡكُمُ بَيۡنَهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ فِيمَا كَانُواْ فِيهِ يَخۡتَلِفُونَ – Allaah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about that wherein they have been differing] [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 113]

Allaah has made known regarding who is upon truth and who is upon falsehood, and He will reward all according to their actions. Allaah’s Religion is one, as Allaah said: [وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ – And I (Allaah) created not the Jinn and Mankind except that they should worship Me (alone)] [Surah Adh-Dhaariyaat. Aayah 56]

And He (Allaah) said: [يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱعۡبُدُواْ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ – O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allaah), Who created you and those who were before you so that you may become Muttaquun (pious)] [Surah Al-Baqarah. Aayah 21]

Allaah’s Religion is one, and it is for all the creation- the Jew, the Christian, the idol worshipper, the Arab and the non Arab. Allaah’s Religion is One (Religion), and that is to worship Him Alone and not ascribe partners with Him in (worship). However, (the people of the era of Pre-Islamic Ignorance) divided their Religion, and each party had a Religion that was in opposition to that of the others. The Jews differed amongst themselves, the Christians differed, and they are upon this differing to this day. Likewise, the Pagan Arabs differed in their Ibaadah (acts of worship)- amongst them were those who worshipped the sun, there were those who worshipped the moon and those who worshipped idols, those who worshipped the Angels and those who worshipped the Awliyaa and the Saaliheen. And amongst them were those who worshipped trees and stones. This was the condition of the (people of the era of Pre-Islamic Ignorance) amongst the Ahlul kitaab (Jews and Christians) and the Ummiyyeen [the illiterates-(i.e. the pagan Arabs-who neither had a Book nor a religion revealed from the heavens)]. They were not united upon a (singular) religion, and were of (various parties); “Every sect rejoicing in that which is with it”.

This is an absolute trial and a punishment- a human being rejoicing in that which he is upon of misguidance. This is the opposite of that which is obligatory and that is the human being is to fear misguidance, deviation and destruction; however, the (people of the era of Pre-Islaamic Ignorance) were upon that which is opposite to this, “Every sect rejoicing in that which is with it”, without examining whether what they were upon is truth or falsehood. What was of importance is that (the path they followed) was the creed of their fathers, forefathers and close relatives, and they did not give importance as to whether it was truth or falsehood.

Therefore, it is punishment when a human being rejoices in falsehood, because when he rejoices in falsehood, he will not be able to escape from it. This is a characteristic of the people of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance and Allaah forbade us from that. He (Allaah) said:

And be not of Al- Mushrikin (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, idolaters, etc.). Of those who split up their religion (i.e. who left the true Islamic Monotheism), and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the religion (Bid’ah), and followed their vain desires].

And He (Allaah) said:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَرَّقُواْ دِينَہُمۡ وَكَانُواْ شِيَعً۬ا لَّسۡتَ مِنۡہُمۡ فِى شَىۡءٍ‌ۚ إِنَّمَآ أَمۡرُهُمۡ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُنَبِّئُہُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَفۡعَلُونَ

Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad) have no concern in them in the least. Their affair is only with Allah, Who then will tell them what they used to do. [Surah Al-An’aam. Aayah 159]

And He (Allaah) revealed to His Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam), saying:

He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He ordained for Nuh (Noah), and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad ), and that which We ordained for Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and ‘Iesa (Jesus) saying you should establish religion (i.e. to do what it orders you to do practically), and make no divisions in it (religion) (i.e. various sects in religion).

This is what Allaah has legislated, and that is to establish the Religion- the religion of Nuh, Ibraahim, Musa, Isaa and Muhammad (may Allaah’s Peace and Blessings be upon all of them). These (five Messengers) have been mentioned because they are the best of all the Messengers. (They) are the Messengers of firm will – Nuh, Ibraahim, Musa, Isaa and Muhammad. Allaah took the covenant from all the Messengers and in particular from these five. He (Allaah) said: [وَإِذۡ أَخَذۡنَا مِنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِيثَـٰقَهُمۡ وَمِنكَ وَمِن نُّوحٍ۬ وَإِبۡرَٲهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَى ٱبۡنِ مَرۡيَمَ‌ۖ وَأَخَذۡنَا مِنۡهُم مِّيثَـٰقًا غَلِيظً۬ا – And (remember) when We took from the Prophets their covenant, and from you (O Muhammad), and from Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). We took from them a strong covenant].

The Religion of all the Messengers is one, and that is to worship Allaah (Alone) and not associate partners with Him. This is the Religion of all the Messengers in general and that of the five (Messengers of firm will). Neither differing nor division is accepted (in this), and neither is it that everyone has his own religion nor that every group has its own religion; rather the Religion is One for everyone. It is the Religion of Allaah for all the creation.

And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone)].

The Religion of all the Jinn and humankind must be one (Religion), and that is Tawheed and to single Allaah out in worship. The Messengers have clarified what Ibaadah (worship) is. It (ibaadah) is not (an affair) that is entrusted to the people; rather Books have been sent down to us, and Messengers have been sent to us, saying: “This is the Religion and this is Worship”.

It (worship and Religion) is Tawqeefiyyah (established through the Sharee-ah of Allaah). Religion is Tawqeefiy and it is not a right of the people to legislate religions; rather it is the Right of Allaah, and He is the One Who legislates the Religion. [ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَڪَـٰٓؤُاْ شَرَعُواْ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱلدِّينِ مَا لَمۡ يَأۡذَنۢ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ‌ۚ – Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed]

This is inkaar (rejection) from Him (Allah, i.e. against those who legislate besides that which Allaah has legislated in religion), because Religion is that which He has legislated and revealed in His Books and upon the tongue of His Messengers. Therefore, (Religion and Worship) is Tawqeefiy. The Messengers are only conveyers from Allaah – convey from Allaah what He has legislated for His servants. This is the job of the Messengers – they are followers of the Religion like others, slaves who worship Allaah with the Religion He has legislated for them and their nations.

And He (Allaah) said: [وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَٱخۡتَلَفُواْ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَـٰتُ‌ۚ وَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ۬ – And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment].

This is a prohibition that we do not become like the people of the era of pre-Islamic ignorance- those who split and differed. And this was not out of ignorance on their part; rather it was due to desires “After the clear proofs had come to them”. They abandoned the clear proofs and followed desires. It was desires that carried them towards splitting, followed their desires as gods besides Allaah. Allaah has not failed to establish the proof against anyone, He has sent the Messengers and revealed the Books:

Then whenever there comes to you guidance from me, and whoever follows my guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve. But those who disbelieve and belie our Aayaat such are the dwellers of the fire, they shall abide therein forever.

Therefore, Allaah did not leave mankind (just like that) from the time Aadam landed on earth. He did not leave mankind without a Religion and a Prophet; rather He has not ceased sending Messengers in succession to legislate and explain the religion for the people, up until He finalised that with (the sending of Muhammad-sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam), whose Religion will never be abrogated until the establishment of the hour, and its support is the Book (i.e. the Qur’an) and the Sunnah.

There has not been a period from the various periods, except that there was a Messenger who came with the Religion (ordained by) Allaah. ”And there never was a nation but a warner had passed among them” [35:24] “Messengers as bearers of good news as well as of warning in order that mankind should have no plea against Allah after the Messengers [4:165]. And no one has proof to say: “There came unto us no bringer of glad tidings and no warner” [5:19], because Allaah has established the proof against the creation. However, the people of the era of pre-islamic ignorance opposed not that which the Messengers came with out of ignorance, rather it was out of following desires, especially the Jews and the Christians, who were upon knowledge and awareness regarding that. And for that reason Allaah called them Ahlul Kitaab (The People Of The Scripture) from the angle of blame/censure. Indeed, they are People of the Scripture and People of Knowledge, but along with this they opposed the command of Allaah and followed their desires.

Allaah has prohibited this ummah from following this pre-Islamic path and commanded them to hold onto the religion which He revealed to His Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam), and it is that (Religion/path) which the sahaabah of the Messenger and the Rightly guided Khulafaa followed. This is the Religion incumbent upon the Ummah to hold onto up until the establishment of the hour. And if the (ummah of Muhammad) differs on any affair, they are to refer it to the Kitaab (Qur’aan) and the Sunnah.

[فَإِن تَنَـٰزَعۡتُمۡ فِى شَىۡءٍ۬ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ إِن كُنتُمۡ تُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ‌ۚ – And if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day]

Differing is from human nature, but Allaah has directed us to the Kitaab and the Sunnah when we differ and know not which of us is upon correctness. We are to return to the Kitaab and the sunnah, and then take what the Kitaab and the Sunnah declares to be the truth and abandon what the (the Kitaab and the sunnah) declares to the other than the truth; because our objective is to follow the truth, and not to gain the upper hand through either opinions, exalting forefathers, ancestors or Shuyookh. This is not the concern of the Muslims. The truth is the desired goal of the Muslim and he takes it wherever he finds it. The objective is to (take) the truth, [ إِن كُنتُمۡ تُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ‌ۚ ذَٲلِكَ خَيۡرٌ۬ وَأَحۡسَنُ تَأۡوِيلاً – If you believe in Allaah and the last Day. That is better’ for you than being upon differing. ‘And that is better and more suitable for final determination’ – that is a better end result.

This is from the Mercy of Allaah upon us. He preserved within ourselves that which will stop differing and that which leads to the truth, and that is the Kitaab (The Qur’aan). And for that reason He (subhaanah) said: “And hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allaah”, and that is, “All of you” (should hold onto the Qur’aan), and not just some of you; rather all of you, all the creation and this Ummah (of Muhammad) in particular. “And be not divided among youselves, and remember Allaah’s favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His grace, you became breathen (in Islamic faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it”. [3:103]

“And you were on the brink of a pit of fire”, (upon the Religion of Pre-Islamic Ignorance) and “He (Allaah) saved you from it”. He saved you through Islaam and this Qur’aan. Therefore, remember Allaah’s Favour. And Holding onto the Rope of Allaah is to hold onto the Kitaab, because the Kitaab is the expansive Book of Allaah, which brings safety to the one who follows it and destruction to the one who slips away from it. This is from that which Allaah has related to us about the condition of the people of the era of pre-Islamic ignorance, that they split up their Religion (i.e. left the true Islamic Monotheism), and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the Religion (Bid’ah), and followed their vain desires], each sect rejoicing in that which is with it’ [30:32] Thereafter, Allaah forbade us from that (splitting) and from imitating them in that, and commanded us to hold onto His Book, which (brings) about Safety from splitting, differing and destruction.

There is no safety except through holding onto the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam), “And hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allaah, and be not divided among yourselves”, because the people of the pre-islamic era of ignorance were divided in their Religion, as Allaah said, “Every sect rejoicing in that which is with it”. [30:32]

They were pleased with their paths, even when that happened to be falsehood. Likewise, they were divided in relation to managing their worldly affairs, because the one who is (hindered from guidance) in affairs of his Religion will be (hindered from guidance) in affairs of the worldly life. They were divided in the affairs of the worldly life and were not a united body; rather tribes ruled themselves, and each tribe declared lawful the blood and wealth of the other tribe.
