Sins are Major and Minor – Shaykh Fawzaan

إِن تَجۡتَنِبُواْ كَبَآئِرَ مَا تُنۡهَوۡنَ عَنۡهُ نُكَفِّرۡ عَنكُمۡ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمۡ وَنُدۡخِلۡكُم مُّدۡخَلًا كَرِيمًا

If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall remit from you your (small) sins, and admit you to a Noble Entrance (i.e. Paradise). An-Nisa’ 4:31

Allah’s statement contains a clear indication that sins are of different types: major and minor. Whoever avoids the major sins, Allah will pardon and forgive their minor sins. This is a promise from Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.

وَنُدۡخِلۡكُم مُّدۡخَلًا كَرِيمًا

and admit you to a Noble Entrance (i.e. Paradise). An-Nisa’ 4:31

This too is a promise from Allah. Within this verse lies a refutation of the methodology of the Khawarij and the Mu’tazilah, who claim that the perpetrator of a major sin exits the fold of Islam. In contrast, the methodology of Ahlus-Sunnah is the truth—balanced, far removed from extremism, negligence, exaggeration (ghuloo) and transgression in the religion.

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَٰٓئِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ

Those who avoid great sins (see the Quran, Verses: 6:152, 153) and Al-Fawahish (illegal sexual intercourse, etc.) except the small faults, verily, your Lord is of vast forgiveness. An-Najm 53:32

This verse is one of the evidences that sins are categorised as major and minor.

كَبَٰٓئِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ

Major sins; refers to the various acts of disobedience which reach the level of a major sin.

Al-Fawahish is the plural of Faahishah and refers to sins that are especially abhorrent and repulsive.

His statement – the Most High – إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ (except the small faults) refers to minor sins, which are expiated through various means, including:

• Abstaining from major sins, as mentioned in the verse.

• Performing the five daily prayers.

• Enduring calamities that befall a person—such as illness, disease, grief, and the loss of loved ones.

• Even something as small as a Muslim being pricked by a thorn, as is reported in the Hadith.¹

All of these affairs expiate minor sins, this is from the favours of Allah.

Additionally, He the Most High, said in another verse in Surah ash-Shoora,


وَٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَٰٓئِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَٰحِشَ وَإِذَا مَا غَضِبُواْ هُمۡ يَغۡفِرُونَ

And those who avoid the greater sins, and Al-Fawahish (illegal sexual intercourse, etc.), and when they are angry, they forgive Ash-Shura 42:37

This verse is another proof that sins are distinguished as major and minor.

How does a Muslim Discern if a Calamity is Recompense for his Sins or a Test from Allāh? – Shaykh Sālih al-Fawzān

Shaykh Fawzān was asked about calamities which afflict the Muslim.

Noble Shaykh – May Allāh give you success – this questioner says,

How does a Muslim discern if a calamity that occurred to him, is due to his sins or a test from Allāh (The Mighty & Majestic)?

It is because of his sins, as Allāh said:

وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. (Ash-Shūra: 30)

And is there anyone who is free from sin?! Nobody is faultless; however the door of repentance is open, Alhamdulillāh.

Seek Forgiveness at All Times, Especially as You Become Older or Encounter Ill Health – Shaykh al-Fawzaan

Regarding seeking forgiveness, Shaykh Fawzan in explanation of the final verse of soorah an-Nasr said,

“It is better to complete ones lifespan with seeking and supplicating for forgiveness, because people, whether they are upon righteousness, uprightness and performance of righteous actions; then indeed they still have shortcomings regarding the right of Allah, so they should seek forgiveness. Subsequently it takes precedence and is obligatory for the sinful servant to seek and supplicate for forgiveness from Allah.

There is great virtue in seeking forgiveness and seeking of forgiveness is legislated to be done when completing righteous actions; when your life is approaching its end; when getting up from a gathering (1) and when completing the prayer.

On the authority of Thawbaan (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When he had finished his prayer, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to ask for forgiveness three times and say: “Allaahumma anta al-salaam wa minka al-salaam, tabaarakta yaa dhaa’l-jalaali wa’l-ikraam (O Allaah, You are al-Salaam (the One Who is free from all defects and deficiencies) and from You is all peace, blessed are You, Possessor of Majesty and Honour).” (2)

Likewise he completes his life with asking for forgiveness, just (as he does at the end of each obligatory prayer) because seeking of forgiveness is sought after (at then end of an action, or one’s life).

Returning to Sin after Making Repentance – Shaykh Saaleh Aal Ash Shaykh

 

The Questioner says: I am a young man who has transgressed against himself greatly (meaning he was very sinful), and I have now followed the path to repentance – and all praise is due to Allaah – however, there are still some aspects of disobedience that entice me, so what is your advice to me and those like me? May Allaah reward you with goodness.

Answer:
And I say to you: May Allaah reward you for drawing near to Allaah the Mighty and Majestic and (for your) repentance and regret of what has passed (of sins), and from your caution from the effects of these sins and disobedience.
And the slave (of Allaah) if he was upon a (particular) state then becomes upright and repents (to Allaah) then indeed very few are those who do not keep some things that they used to do before of sins. But upon him (the questioner – or anyone in this situation) are 3 affairs:

  1. To attach great importance to his (act of) his drawing near to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to know that the reward for him being upright is Jannah. And (to know) that by way of sins, he could return to his previous state that he was previously upon.
  2. To be cautious of sitting with those who used to do those sins with him. Because they will facilitate (the sin) for him and so he could return to them (and their ways) after his repentance and drawing near to Allaah.
  3. To search for righteous companions of a similar age to him who will aid him upon goodness and will reduce the chances of him returning to those sins. And if what entices him entices him then he makes plenty of Istighfaar (asking Allaah for forgiveness) and he is determined (not to return to it).
    “As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allaah’s religion – Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allaah is with the Muhsineen (Good doers).”
    And in the narration:
    “One who seeks forgiveness from Allaah will not persist (upon a sin) even if he returns to it 70 times.”
    So the slave (of Allaah) seeks forgiveness a lot, he knows that he sins so he seeks forgiveness. However, he doesn’t persist upon disobedience because he doesn’t care, rather he seeks forgiveness. Every time he does (the sin) and his soul entices him, he seeks forgiveness from Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. For indeed Allaah is Al Ghafoor (The One who forgives extensively) Ar Raheem (the Bestower of Mercy).

Advice for a Person who is Immersed in Desires and Doubts – Shaykh Rabee

What is your advice, may Allah preserve you, for one who has fell into the sea of desires and doubts?

My advice, for him is to repent to Allah and that he recalls the statement of Allah the Blessed and Most High,

Say: “O ‘Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh, verily Allâh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (Az-Zumar: 53)

Therefore, even if you were swimming in a sea of disbelief, you have indeed performed good, by way of repenting to Allah the Blessed and Most High, because the door of repentance is open for all of the servants. So, upon him is to repent to Allah and return to the truth.

Allāh Replaces Sins with Good Deeds When You Repent – Shaykh Uthaymīn

‏Shaykh Uthaymīn (rahimahullāh) in explanation of verse 12 in Al-Hujurāt:

Repentance (tawbah) from the servant is to move from disobeying Allāh to obeying Him. And repentance from Allāh means that Allāh accepts the repentance of the servant and subsequently exchanges his sins for good deeds.

The Prophet (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam) was Commanded with Seeking Forgiveness, so What About Us?

Shaykh Uthaymīn (rahimahullaah) explains al-Istigfār:

The author (Imām an-Nawawi (rahimahullāh)) completed his book (Riyādh as-Sālihīn) – this tremendously beneficial book which Muslims in all corners of the world benefit from (the layperson and the students of knowledge) – with istigfār.

Al-istigfār: means to seek forgiveness, and there is not a single person except that he errs, as the Prophet (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam) said,

“All of mankind err, and the best of those who err are those who repent.” (1)

And mistakes which occur from mankind, are either by way of shortcomings in the performance of an obligation or by the committing of a prohibition.

Mankind is not free from falling into these errors, however the cure of sins and shortcomings is al-istigfār (Alhamdulilāh).

And in an athar, it’s narrated that Shaytān said,

“I have destroyed the people with sins, and I have been destroyed by La Ilāha illa Allāh”

Seeking forgiveness is a means of (gaining) forgiveness, due to this, Allāh commanded with istigfār in many verses of the Qurān.

‎فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

So know (O Muhammad SAW) that La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. (Muhammad: 19)

So Allāh (The Most High) commanded his prophet (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam) to know that there is no deity truly deserving of worship except Allah alone. And he commanded him with seeking forgiveness,

‎وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ

And this was the prophet, he who Allāh has forgiven all of his actions, yet he was still commanded to seek forgiveness.

Likewise, in many verses Allāh has praised those who seek his forgiveness;

‎وَالْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ بِالْأَسْحَارِ

And those who pray and beg Allah’s Pardon in the last hours of the night. (Āli Imrān: 17)

They are those who seek Allah’s forgiveness in the last part of the night.

The scholars said, that they are those who establish tahajjud and stand the night in prayer, worshipping Allāh, and regard themselves to be deficient, so they ask for Allāh’s forgiveness.

This is alongside the fact that they are from those who pray tahajjud and stand the night in prayer, and they seek forgiveness fearing their shortcomings, hence it is a must for people to be plentiful in seeking Allāh’s Forgiveness (The Mighty and Majestic).

Guidelines Surrounding Repentance & Open Clarifications – Shaykh b. Bāz

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ مَا أَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالْهُدَىٰ مِن بَعْدِ مَا بَيَّنَّاهُ لِلنَّاسِ فِي الْكِتَابِ أُولَٰئِكَ يَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّاعِنُونَ

Verily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allāh and cursed by the cursers.

إِلَّا الَّذِينَ تَابُوا وَأَصْلَحُوا وَبَيَّنُوا فَأُولَٰئِكَ أَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَنَا التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Except those who repent and do righteous deeds, and openly declare (the truth which they concealed). These, I will accept their repentance. And I am the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. (Al-Baqarah 159 -160)

Shaykh ’Abdul Azīz b. Bāz in explanation of the verses above:

Within these verses is a proof regarding the obligation of manifesting the truth and openly declaring it, and that manifesting the truth is a binding affair, concealing it is from the major sins and from the characteristics of the yahūd. Therefore, the believer strives in making apparent the truth, calling to it, being patient upon that; whilst simultaneously being wary of concealment (of the truth) in all affairs, and if he was to fall into anything from concealing of the truth, he hastens to tawbah (repentance), rectification and open declaration (of the truth).

Allāh, Ar-Rabb explained that from the completeness and conditions of tawbah (repentance) is:

Rectification (of oneself) and open declaration (of the truth and the falsehood or sin, which is being repented from). Therefore, whoever repents for what has passed from his sins, then it is compulsory upon him to rectify his affairs and it is followed up with repentance, with truthful belief and righteous actions, and openly declaring the truth. He (Mighty and Majestic) said,

وَبَيَّنُوا

“and openly declare.” (Al-Baqarah: 160)

Hence, clarifying the truth and calling to it is a must, and it is also a necessity that repentance is followed up with righteous actions, likewise it is binding to follow it up with open declaration. So, if the repentance was due to concealing the truth, then an open declaration is a requirement so that it is known he has returned from his falsehood and that he is firm upon the truth and is treading its path, in opposition to the yahūd and those who are like them.

For indeed, they regard clarification of the truth and repentance to be a deficiency and belittlement, so they continue in their concealment and rejection of the truth for the purpose of establishing their desires and lowly goals.

It is not suitable for a believer that he resembles the enemies of Allāh in concealing the truth and lack of clarifying it, due to pursuing an object of desire from amongst the various sought-after worldly goals.

Likewise, it is not befitting to shy away from returning to the truth, for returning to it is a virtue and correct, whilst remaining upon falsehood is lowliness, humiliation, vileness and leads to being exposed to the displeasure of Allāh (The Mighty and Majestic). Thus, it is a must to return to the truth and to caution from falsehood, in order to safeguard oneself from the anger and punishment of Allāh, so that you may become successful by way of noble means and attain a praiseworthy ending.

The One Who Has Fallen Into Doubts And Desires – Shaykh Rabee ibn Haadi Al-Madkhalee

Shaykh Rabee ibn Haadi Al-Madkhalee (hafidahullah) was asked:

What is your advice – Allah preserve you – to the one who has fell into the sea of desires and doubts?

My advice to him is that he repents to Allah and that he brings to mind the statement of Allah:

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

Say: “O ‘Ibadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [Az-Zumar: 53]

So if you swam in the sea of disbelief for you is to exit with repentance to Allah (tabaaraka wa ta’aala), therefore upon him is to repent to Allah and return to Allah, the door of repentance is open for all of the servants (of Allah).
